I accidently deleted the Administrator file and need to know how to get it back where the Owner file is. I moved the file from the Recycle bin by click and hold and moved to desktop. I know I should have restored. Now it has the desktop as its routing (I can't think what else to call it). I can now log on if the error message that says "microsoft cannot log on" stays on the screen long enough to click OK. If the screen does not stay the computer trys to boot up (I guess) but will not do anything until the screen times out and I press a key; than the "microsoft cannot log on" error message will come up and I click OK. Than a screen appears that shows the Owner and I click on it and every thing works all right. I would apprciate any help. Let me know if I need to explain more.

Hi, this is my first posting. :)

My friend was just infected by Spy Sheriff :( He uses Window XP Home edition. He got instruction from an online support, which part of the procedures is for him to use the CleanUp! software and using Custom CleanUp! which invovles the following:

-> Empty Recycle Bins
-> Delete Cookies
-> Delete Prefetch files
-> Scan local drives for temporary files
-> Cleanup! all users

Once he clicked "OK" to CleanUp!All users, his computer lost all icon images, he cannot see any icon on task bar, I.E. and can't even start some applications. But he still have Spy Sheriff on his wall paper :(

Can this be fixed? how?

Please kindly help ASAP!

There was another thread about this, but the solution wasn't clearly explained. A user provided the OP with a file, and nothing was said about what to do with the file that was provided. I'm having the same problem, where I deleted the file by accident and now there is no live tile for the desktop anywhere on the start screen, not even in the All Apps category. I can't find it in the Windows Store either. What do I do? Here is a screenshot of the folder that I *think* held the original desktop file.

There is a backup copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.
Download link : Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
What you need to do is first shrink/resize "C" and create one or more new partitions using the free space.

I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB external hard drive.
I got a new 2TB internal hard drive and was installing Windows on it.
On the screen where it showed the connected drives, I stupidly forgot the 2 external drives were still connected. I thought somehow it was breaking up the new 2TB internal drive into 3 separate partitions. I clicked on the two external drives and deleted the partitions because I thought it would merge them. I DID NOT format luckily.
I am in the middle of running the Analyzer using TestDisk on the 2TB external. Since it is a 2TB hard drive, it is analyzing about 10% of the disk per day. So I guess it will take 10 days to finish. Small price to pay if I can recover all the data on these drives. One has all our home movies and photos and the other has all our scanned documents in PDF format. Sigh.
I am wondering if I am doing this the right way with TestDisk? Is there a faster way? When I deleted the partitions, the process took less than a second. The drives were partitioned to used 100% of the drive space. I read the page TestDisk Step By Step but still not sure if there isn't an easier way for my particular blunder. Nothing should be corrupted. Just deleted.
Thank you!

A:Deleted Partitions By Accident Please Help

Yes it should be faster. I thought there were two levels to the restore deleted partitions and only the deeper level involves scanning the surface for old deleted partitions.

Hey Guys I screwed up as follows:

I was fooling around with my graphics drivers and accidentally deleted them. A screen popped up to reboot the computer. It rebooted.

Now whenever I restart my computer, first a microsoft screen appears, then it appears to load but I have no on-screen visual as i get a monitor error message (Not Optimum Mode, Recommended 1920x1200, 60Hz), I am therefore unable to download and install any updated drivers.

What Can I do to restore my Drivers or at least get a visual to Re-install them?

I'm running Windows Vista, and one of the newer NVidia Graphics Cards.

I believe you'd need to boot into safe mode in order to get the resolution down, or at least that's the easiest way I can think of. Boot into safe mode and allow as much as possible, try installing your drivers from there.

But for some reason it doesnt look like my trash folders are synced up with my godaddy account?

A:Just deleted an email by accident, now I cant find it?

I don't know anything about godaddy, but do they have a spam folder? Chances are that it isn't there either, otherwise your client wouldn't have received it. Do you have the client set to leave the messages on godaddy? If so, either the client or godaddy is haywire. If in neither place, I would say that it is gone, unless you use a file recovery program to search for it.

It didn't. So now those three folders lost their little special-folder images (as well as the icons for C:, D: etc under 'My Computer', and my VS is still the same. I'm annoyed!. Can anyone help?

A:StyleXP not working & I deleted desktop.ini on accident

Hi toybird

Sorry for the delay in getting a reply to you (been busy). Any luck yet finding a solution?

If not, try these for a quick repair
1) System Restore
2) Uninstall StyleXP
3) Run a Registry Cleaner (CCleaner is effective).
4) Reinstall StypeXP

. . . and anytime you have unexpected system behavior, run some malware scans to rule out unexpected visitors causing havor with your system files.

To try System Restore:
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up, and select "Safe Mode" from the Boot Menu).
2) Logon as "Administrator".
3) Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore, and select a restore point from before trouble started.

Try CCleaner to clean up
1) You can download CCleaner here ---
2) Run the "Cleaner" functions to clean up temp files & other accumulating unnecessary files. Then run the "Issues" functions to clear up problems in the Registry. Run the "Issues" functions until CCleaner reports "no issues found."
Best of luck

Oh...the horror! I accidentally replaced a file with another file in WordPerfect. Here's what happened: WP had crashed while I was working on a document. I reopened WP, then chose to rename the backed up file by using the name of the original file, thus replacing the pre-crash version. WP even asked me "[Your document name] already exists. Replace?" to which I said yes. Great, right? Wrong...I had chosen to replace a similarly named but MUCH MORE IMPORTANT file with the trivial document that I had been working on. How can I get the original document back?

What I already tried: right-clicking on "Properties" on the document name in Windows Explorer, in search of the "Previous Versions" button (as suggested elsewhere). No. Such. Button. Anywhere.

What I'm running: WP X3 on Windows Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire.

How can I get my old file back? Thanks in advance.

Open your e-mail message.

Open your attachment (Office Writer attachment (.odt)).

Inside Process Explorer, right-click the new process (from the application used to open that attachment).

Select Properties...

Select the Image tab.

Look inside the Command line bar.

You'll see the exact path to the temporary folder created for the attachment.

Make sure to check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected system files" in Folder Options.

Only copy the part from C:\Users to Content.IE5.

Note: a new folder number is created each time you open an attachment (e.g. IGSDF94V)

"C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\WINWORD.EXE" "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IGSDF94V\Example.docx"

Paste that path inside the My Computer address bar and click OK.

You'll have to look inside each folder manually for the name of your document. The folder number will be different from the one you're seeing inside the Command line bar in Process Explorer.

Do not run a Search. Look very carefully inside each folder. It should be there!

At the first after I upgraded my notebook from windows 8 to windows 10,
I just realize that 1 of my 3 user account is not exist anymore (the Guest account is not there just after I upgrade it into windows 10). As I tried to make the new Guest account and still didnt work (I dont want to follow such a complex email registration required by windows 10 to make a new user account), I thought to delete my secondary user account. However, I just realize that there is a file that I saved in the Desktop under my secondary user account. Is there a way to restore this desktop file that is saved in my deleted user account?

I have opened C:\Users\ but I cant find the folder with the name of my deleted user account.
Can anyone help me?

It's very important yet big file (around 2 GB). Thankss

A:How to restore file in deleted user account (Desktop File)

Hi Blaume, welcome to the Ten Forums.

I am sorry but when you deleted the user account, it's gone, all its files are gone, forever. The only way to get the file back would be to restore a system image made before the account was deleted.

The built-in guest account no longer works in Windows 10. However, you can create a new Guest account by yourself:

Well, sort of strange thing happening with my pc.

I'll give an example: two files, names 1st_file.avi, 2nd_file.avi, nearly same size, at different locations. Now I deleted 1st_file.avi and 2-3 weeks after deletion, I open 2nd_file.avi (which wasn't deleted) and find that instead of the original 2nd_file.avi, the contents of 1st_file.avi are being played.

How can the contents of 1st_file.avi mapped onto the the contents of 2nd_file.avi? And where did my 2nd_file.avi go??

thanks for being patient and reading it through

OK i should admit that this was a slightly dubious file alledgedly proving a certain starlets dislike of underwear..... However the file name is so long that Windows XP will not let me delete it... also the file was corrupted ( no pun intended ) so has a zero file length.. I did virus scan the download and AVG said file was not virus.... anyway i need to get rid of it any ideas....!!!

A big shout out to all replies But the Biggest thanks to Moderator John Will who had the simple idea of shift everything else then delete folder........ Why is it always the simplest ideas that work best... PS I eventually saw evidence of starlets dislike of pants on google images.... Take off safe search and leer away without having to download any suspiscious files.

recently one of my clients contacted me and told me that he was unable to download a .msg file from our CRM system.
So I connected to the computer to have a closer look at the problem.
Turns out that he only had the problem with some specific .msg file.
The file has the name "Besuchsberich AK Feinrohr - Angebot Nr 2001267 Z 800+ Kombibehälter 2 x 700 Ltr Volumen (3).msg". When the user clicked the download link and just selected "open", he always got the message that the file probably
was moved or was being deleted.
Selecting a different download location helped and provided a workaround, but I don't what's causing the problem. Can anyone help?
I thought maybe path is too long or hdd is full but that wasn't the case. Also deleted temp. internet files, no luck.

Ran a scan with a TROJAN REMOVER and this file came up as suspecious....

Any worries?

A:Should this File Be Deleted

Hello topazbest and welcome to the TSG Malware Removal forum. A file name is really not enough to make a judgement on. The location is what is more important. Files with names of valid operating system files in the worng location would point to malicious software.

A good place to check a file out is Jotti's.

Perform a search for this file and note the location. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan.

Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

While scanning with Avast for the very first time I inadvertently have deleted file 'C:\Pagefile.sys'.

Avast had found that it contained a virus and, as there was not enough disc space to move it to the Chest, I chose the delete option thinking that I was deleting the infection when in fact I was deleting the file.

I have tried to recover it without success.

What problems can I expect as a result of this mistake?

Hi Teddyboy,

It is my understanding that the page file is a file used by windows as memory. When all your physical memory is fully used and you need more, Windows uses your hard drive and the file named Pagefile. Windows will recreate it when it needs to.

Right click a blank part of your desktop & select New->Folder. Call it SPFix. Go to and download SpSeHjfix. Get the one that's specified for your Operating System. So if you have Windows 98, get the one that's listed for Windows 98.

Disconnect from the net and close all programs. Run SpSeHjfix and click on 'Start Disinfection'. When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

Now run the CWShredder and hit the Fix button.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix.

I have inadvertantly deleted a personal file (containing data and pictures files) from my laptop.I tried to use recovery programs to recover at least the pictures. I have recovered some of the files containing the pictures, but cannot open these pictures . When trying to open each picture (of the recovered ones) I've got the following note:"Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, ot its format is not currently supported"I checked the System Restore and found that a restore point is available to the date prior the delete. Can System Restore recover the deleted file?Note: The file was installed on the Desktop (before being deleted).I am using Windows XP ProThanks for your assitance.

A:Recover A Deleted File

The restore point may work for you, or it may not. Persoanlly, that's a tough call, because you risk erasing the deleted version where you can't retrieve it, and you risk the possibility that the restore point won't work, and at the same time, erased any possible chance of you recovering what was accidentally deleted. If possible, the best way you is to hook the hard drive in question to another computer as the slave. And then use the other computer to get the data off, because you stand the risk of that sector of the hard drive to be over-written with data if you add/install a program to the computer. It's not always true.. but that risk still exists. If you don't have access to another computer then you'll want to use a few FREE ones that are out there. Look in the Commercial FREEWare forum here on this site. Sorry, I forget the link right off hand. But whatever you do, don't keep deleting and (or) modifying the hard drive if you want your data back. By all means, just download what you need, and do as less installing/deleting on that computer as possible. And then again, if you feel that the Restore Point will bring back the data, then all I can say is go for it. But remember to weigh out your odds, no matter which route you take.a. connect the hard drive to another computer, and do it that way (safest known method)b. install a program(s) on the computer in question, and run it from there (risk/a workable method)c. Use the Windows Restore Point (ris... Read more

There's an .exe file on my hard drive which absolutely refuses to be deleted. It has an attribute of "Read Only," but whenever I remove the check from the "Read Only" checkbox in the folder properties panel thing it simply changes back to Read Only. I've tried cutting and pasting the file into the recycle bin, clicking and dragging the file, using the DEL key, and I even renamed it as a text file and tried everything again. I was able to move the file between folders, but every folder it was put into became read-only as well, and I couldn't change them back to their normal state. Is there any kind of "forced delete" which can ignore a file's attributes? I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

Hello there,

I have got a dell mini 9 inspiron with a very small hard drive around 8gb. I am running windows xp on service pack 2. I have been onto windows site to try and get service pack 3 but keep getting held up by windows validation all though I have a genuine copy of xp.

The problem is as follows:

When I delete a file or programme it takes up even more free space on the hard drive. It is as though the file is not being deleted. I have tried to uninstall and re install the recycle bin but that has not worked.

As you can imagine due to only having such a small hard drive it is quite a problem.

I hope that someone can help me out.

Thanks in advance

Hi! I am having that search engine issue where it redirects you to a different website when you search for something on google, yahoo, etc. I had AVG, and Malwarebites come back with no results. It was suggested that I install ComboFix. The program didnt finish installing, it said "please write this file down on paper as we are disabling it and may need it later" and then I started getting hundreds of errors saying that the file it disabled is needed for pretty much every application on my computer.

I looked up the file, C:/Windows/system32/msqhdhx.dll and it is apparently a VIR file, which I understand to be a virus file.

At this point I'll take the google virus if I can make this other issue go away. I get a pop up saying I need "msqhdhx.dll" for anything I open. The program will eventually open after clicking OK on the warning box for five or six rounds.

HELP, thanks!

I am unable to log on to my computer.
I tapped F8 to get a command prompt but I am unsure which boot device
to select and what to do next.
Please help.

A:Deleted Registry File

First of all - why did you delete that file?

You can boot from your XP CD - go into the recovery console - and copy that file from your XP CD to the system32 folder.

I have an older HP Desktop (Pavilion p6243w) and I know soon enough the HDD will fail at some point, so I've started using Backup & Recovery. I'm backing up ONLY PICS and MUSIC files which are really important to me to save on a PNY 16GB Flash Drive. On the first backup it's already showing from 15.12GB available, 6.73GB has been used with 8.28GB of space left. To free up some needed space I was wondering if this MediaID.bin file is crucial or can it be deleted...same with Other Files which doesn't tell you what exactly are these "other files" and can they also be deleted??Capture.JPG

I have acquired a file which, when scanned, turned out to be infected by "Win32.worm.VB.Ymeak.A" .
I immediately tried to delete it, but all I get is 'Cannot read from the source file od disk'
I've tried renaming it, changing attributes, moving it - to no avail
BullGuard, the security prog that came with the computer keeps telling me it has blocked this "worm", ad-aware, spybot and BitDefender tell me everything is fine with nothing to report.
Any ideas on what my next steps should be?
If it's there, I want rid!

I deleted accidentally mi pst file. Installed several recovery programs (Recuva, Recover My Files, Stellar Phoenix Win Data Recovery, Active @ Undeleted, Pandora Recovery) and none of them show the deleted file in the original folder.

I even made a new test, deleted an old copy of my pst located in the same folder and run all programas without making any changes in the hard drive and cannot view the pst file in the deleted file list.

Both files were deleted with shift+del and the size was 500Mb aprox. Runing Win XP.

How can this be possible? Is there any way I can recover the deleted file?

A:Cannot recover deleted pst file

Hi All,

I deleted a tiny txt file with important info from my desktop by mistake.

After one week I realized that I did. It is not there in the recycle bin.

I tried recovering with Recuva and Pandora recovery, but both the applications are not being able to locate the file.

Any advice, tips on how to locate/recover the tiny text file.

Please help!

A:Recovering deleted file

As it appears, most recovery software do not have the option to scan for txt files.

re:Accidently deleted file

There is a software called "Restoration", it might help. It undeletes files. Here is the free link: Download it and install it. When it lunches, there is a box you can type in your file name or part of the name and it should recover it for you. Hope this works. Be blessed!

Please help,

I have mistakely deleted a file from the HJT list and it is now sitting on my desktop. I do i get it back in HJT so i can restore the file?

Thanks in advance

A:Deleted wrong HJT file

1. Open HJT. On the lower right, there is a button that says "Config". Click on that.
2. Click on backups at the top.
3. Hi-lite the backup you want to restore, then click on restore.

That should do it. :D

I'd really appreciate some help on this problem.
I have a Dell PC with Avast 4, AdawareSE and Spybot installed and updated.

Avast picked up a virus contained within the wininet.dll file and asked if I wanted to delete the file or place it in the virus fault.

Stupidly, I chose to deleted it, even though I had a feeling it mite be a system file.
Now when I start the PC it boots fine until the wallpaper appears. From there I cant access anything. No desktop, startmenu, icons, nothing. All I get is the error message:

'The application has failed to start because WININET.dll was not found. Please re-install'

I can get into task manager though (using cnrtl, alt del).
I have tried creating a new task and running explorer. exe but I just get the above error. Ive also tried running sfc /scannow from the command prompt (with an XP cd) but it just stalls.

Obviously I have a copy of the wininet.dll file on the xp cd, but Im not sure of the syntax to copy it across using command prompt?

I have tried a repair from the recovery console but I cant get past the admin password.
I dont remember ever setting one (im certain I haven't) but it doesn't except a blank one.

I have googled for help, but Im really struggling here.

I found that I had a home page hijacker "about:blank". I got rid if it using "adware away" software but now I have a missing dll file "c:\windows\system32\ms0b920b.dll". Is there a file I can download to get it back?

A:deleted ms0b920b.dll file

You don't want that file back. It is part of a new variant of CWS, and is not a valid Windows file.

I am guessing that the main part of the infection is still on there, and it is looking for that .dll. The main infection is qqtask.exe, which normally is a valid Quick Time file, but in this case, CWS has rewritten it.

Hi friends,

you have come to my rescue in the past but I have done something awful this time!

I accidently deleted a file (or program) which began with the word 'Apple'.

My system is fine but I think the file may have been required to view web building software. A demo called 'SiteStudio' which I was able to view yesterday is disabled now, so I am assuming I really did need that file.

I assumed because I use Windows that a file/program called 'Apple.... was not required by my system. Can anyone guess what the full title of this file was and how I can retrieve it?

Kind thanks for any help
(please don't ask me anything technical )

Tessie x

A:Retrieve deleted file?

try re-installing that program.
