Q: moving firefox profile

Hi all, I at the point of throwing this laptop against the wall. I reinstalled windows on my moms laptop because she screwed it up. I installed without formatting the drive so I could just move her user folder over to the new installation from windows.old

anyways my main point is, I got the firefox profile from the old user, and copied it to the new one.. firefox REFUSES to use it. Ive tried everything, renaming it, reinstalling firefox and copying it before opening it, creating a new firefox profile and copying the folders from inside the old profile to the new one, firefox just starts blank everytime... I dont get it, I did the same thing on my computer last week and it just worked, also ive done it 1000s of times in the past, so what the hell is wrong with it this time???

Hello All,
Here's my problem. I've erased my profile from Mozilla Firefox. I HAVE NOT however erased the profile files.

I have since created a profile with a different name. I would like to import the old profile info (bookmarks inparticular) to my new "default" profile.

As well, what if I wanted to import info from another Mozilla Firefox profile?

Can this be done?

I've tried everything but I can't seem to figure it out.

If you do post please be advised that I am not all that familiar with Firefox.

Thank you all for your time.

A:Solved: Mozilla Firefox...Erased Profile but not files...trying to import to new profile

I move mine manually all the time. If you just want to add the bookmarks.html, just move the one you saved to the new profile. Here is the official instructions from Firefox on backup and restore of the Profile.

does anybody know a way, or if it is possible, to copy a user profile from one user to another?

I originally set up a user on win7 with admin privileges but now want to use the built in admin account but would like to move all my tweaks and desktop configuration to the built in admin account, is this possible?

A:Moving or copying a user profile

Yes, just log into the account you want to use and from in there, copy all the files below the other accounts user name to the user name of the account you want to use. It will take a while but it should work.

After it is done and you verify everything has transferred over and is working properly, you can delete the account you copied from.

I've just gotten a new laptop with Windows Home Premium x64 where the user folder is located on a D partition (580 GB) while the OS is on a 100 GB C partition. Although I've found tutorials about moving user profiles from C to D partitions such as this User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation I am not sure if this might be the right way to move the users folder into the OS partition. I am doing this as I would rather enlarge the C partition for program files, have a "d" partition to host a 32-bit windows os and an "e" partition dedicated to back up matters/for files which are not going to be actively used, which is the arrangement I have traditionally used.

Thanks very much!

A:Moving user profile from D partition to C

I think the best method would be to backup any data you want to save then reinstall Win 7 via the Recovery Partition.
Even the link you gave talks about what you can do during install, not after.

The first thing you need to do is create a set of Recovery Discs just in case something goes wrong (or when you hard drive dies). Once you have that and have backed up anything you don't want to lose, see if there is a Recovery Partition on the hard drive that you can restore from. If not then use the Recovery Discs you created.

Hi all,

I would like to move the Admin (default user that is set up automatically upon installation) and individual users profiles to a different HDD to get them away from the system drive. Has anyone ever done this? If so can you give me any tips. Also, are there any pitfalls and is there a down side?

It seems a sensible idea to me as it would make data back up and restoration so much more sensible in the event of a system crash, or worse, a HDD failure.

A:Moving a user profile to a new partition or drive

I have not actually moved in XP - But have moved a lot of userprofiles in vista and windows7 which is very easy BUT I think this should do what you are after

Start button,
right-click "My Computer" and select "Properties".
System properties ->
Advanced ->
user profiles ->
settings ->
select user profile and select copy to -> choose the Drive ID letter you want to move

You MUST NOT BE logged in to the profile you want to move
Make sure you restart the PC and log into a another administrator user on the PC
So that nothing is using the profile you want to move

Please NOTE - I have not tried this myself on an XP machine

Just found this link which also involves registry edits

Hello all,

Relatively new here, so bear with me please. Today I was going to move my gamer profile from my XBOX onto a USB, and after that, I tried loading it onto my computer, and it said:

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

Pretty sure it is a driver problem, but I've searched all over google for my same problem, and returned nothing.

Thanks in advance, Mav

First of all: I am familiar with that my thread should have been asked in the Win 10 Forum. However, since I don't like now to sign up a new account in Win 10 Forum and also this thread is related to both systems Win 7 and Win 10, I posted my thread here.
I always prefer this partition setup:
First HDD:
- C for the OS
- D recovery partition (often hidden)
- E for personal files (so you have to move your special folders 'Documents, Pictures, Downloads etc. there and preferably your mail etc. Anything that can change on a daily basis).

- I was having Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed on C:
- In windows 7, I moved all existing user account profile folder from the default location(C:\Users) into (D\:Users) in both the Windows explorer and in the registry. by following the Brink's explanation

- By following Brink's explanation, I moved all newly created user account profile folder from the default location(C:\Users) into (D\:Users)

- I moved public user account profile folder from the default location(C:\Users) into (D\:Users)

- I was working well with this partition setup.
- However, I have now installed a new fresh of Windows 10 Home 64-bit in-place the old Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit(in the C partition).
My question is: Can I do the same thing with the Windows 10?

For a variety of reasons, I like moving profile folders to a separate drive. Currently, I do this using the procedure found here but that's GUI-based and I'd like to be able to automate it. Does anyone know if there's a shell command that can accomplish this task? I don't want to just robocopy it or move it - the beauty of the linked procedure is that the OS knows that the folders have been moved (and their new locations) so all the favorites links and shortcuts in an Explorer window, the desktop, etc. are all automatically and transparently updated.

I didn't have firefox open before trying to open it, but it still wouldn't let me sign on my regular profile, so i had to create a new one. I doubt this happened at all. Firefox can only function with 1 profile at a time, unless you've got more than 1 instance of FF installed. More likely you've closed Firefox and re-opened it before it has cleared the Task Manager. It usually denies access to your profile because it is still 'live' in the Task Manager and should this happen, look in the 'Processes' tab of the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and if there is any instance of firefox.exe - select 'End Task'. You will now be able to open FF in your usual profile.

albertec said:

To access the Profile Manager:

Close Firefox and make sure Firefox is not running in the 'Processes' tab of the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), if it is - End Process then proceed.....

Click - Start > Run > (type) firefox.exe -p
This will take you to your Profile Manager, from here you can select your profile (or create, rename & delete profiles) and take the option to open the Profile Manager on every opening of Firefox. This is handy if you have multiple profiles or you have multiple users.

I use Firefox's profile manager to run multiple instances of Firefox with different profiles. This allows me to improve my online security.
For example, I have a profile which is dedicated to webmail.
When I receive e-mails with links or attachments, I will never open them in the webmail instance, but in another instance dedicated to general surfing.
Anybody else using the profile manager for this purpose? Just wondering.

A:Firefox: do you use the profile manager?

I don't see using different profiles unless there is more than one user or testing a beta release of Firefox.
Just checked here...Multiple Firefox profiles - Mozilla | MDN
No mention of this being more secure in the sense of isolating a malware install, etc.
Just protects the main Firefox from bookmark corruption, etc. when testing or developing.

I finally got tired of all of those JavaScript errors popping up in Firefox and started looking for solutions. I installed the newest Java update and used JavaRa to get rid of the old versions. After that Firefox would not start at all. I assumed it had to do with the newest update - there's a lot of "Firefox not responsive" and "Firefox sucks" stuff out there re: the most recent update - and Safe Mode would not open either. I uninstalled it and installed the previous version 3.5.12 but now I guess it was a problem with my profile because that version wouldn't open either (it appeared in the task manager processes but would not actually open). I created a new default profile and was able to open it and surf the net but my bookmarks were gone (since it was a new profile). I copied my bookmarks html file into the new profile and the places file (which has the live bookmarks) but for some reason one entire large subfolder of bookmarks is missing.

When I opened the bookmarks file from the current profile in the browser the files are not there but when I drag and drop the file from the old profile and did a text search for some of the links that I could not see under "organize bookmarks" and they seem to still be there but for some reason the folder (and its several subfolders - sometimes I use the "bookmark all tabs" function so it creates a subfolder) with the bookmarks will not display. My wife and I share a computer, running Win XP. We've both been using Firefox for quite a while, and are currently on version 4.0.1.

The problem is that my wife cannot start Firefox any longer. Any way we try to start it, you get a brief hourglass, then the computer just acts like you never tried to start it.

If you pull up Windows task manager, it shows firefox as an active process, but not an open application.

The process shows 99% CPU usage. It occasionally dips a little if AdAware does something, bit goes back up to 99%. The application never starts - no matter how long you wait.

I've tried un-installing and re-installing Firefox, but no change.

IE7 works fine for her profile.

I've run multiple scans with Malware Bytes, Super anti spyware, SpybotS&D, Adaware, and MS Security Essentials - all clean.

The only other symptom in her profile is that when you log out, you get a window for "nsAppShell: Event Window", asking if you want to end it now.
The bizarre thing is that Firefox works fine when logged into my profile.

If I check Windows task manager (like right now as I write here) Firefox shows like 20% CPU usage.

Anyone have an idea where to go from here?

Up until now I've always used MozBackup - Backup tool for Firefox and Thunderbird to backup/ restore Firefox profiles. This method worked with Cyberfox/ Waterfox or other Firefox variants that shared the same profile as Firefox. However in preparation for a future upgrade to Cyberfox v.29 the latest version now uses it's own separate profile and MozBackup will not detect the folder path.

So I've started using FEBE Firefox Extension to backup/ restore profiles instead and it seems to work.

The only problem is that it requires actually running Cyberfox then starting the FEBE add on in order to perform profile backup/ restore operations. MozBackup could restore a profile without having to run the browser.

Does anybody know of a reliable alternative Firefox variant profile backup/ restore utility that's similar to MozBackup? I know about copying and creating profiles using Profile Manager but again it requires use of the browser and I'm looking for a solution that will work independently.

why won't it work?

A:Firefox profile won't be accepted on new machine?

A new install is why. The old q2888wht.default file name is now killing FF from seeing the profile.

A new install gaves you a new ????????.default file that is in the register so you want to use that.
What is inside the old q2888wht.default you can still use.
Some extensions you may have to reinstall. Note that most extensions all the folders and files are in the extensions folder. Some extensions will have another folder and or file in the ????????.default like adblockplus does.

Hello all,

A friend of mine suggested this addon to me a while ago and I think I should share it with you - if you aren't already using it that is!

As the thread title suggests, this is for Firefox only.

FEBE is a Firefox addon that allows the user to make a full backup of their Firefox profile. Your Firefox profile stores all of your addons, settings and bookmarks. If you ever have any problems with Firefox, you can just restore to one of these backups - it can essentially be used as a system restore for Firefox.

I've very recently (this morning) reinstalled Windows 7 and FEBE saved me the hassle of importing all of my Firefox data again. Within seconds of running FEBE, I had all of my addons, bookmarks and settings back

For more information on FEBE, go to:

FEBE Firefox Extension
To download FEBE, go to:
When I find time, I will make a tutorial on it But until then, you'll have to work it out for yourselves - it isn't that hard.

A:FEBE - Firefox Profile Backups

Thanks for reminding me. I didn't have it installed on FF 5. I've been using it for quite awhile.

edit: hmm, doesn't seem to like FF 5. It just hangs after backing up 2 AddOns.

edit2: guess it just doesn't like selective backup. I set it to full profile and it was done in like 1/10th of a second!

edit3: Sorry, I know it's not your job to support FEBE

Following the instructions I'm going here: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles and clicking on 'profiles' but as soon as I do I get this pop-up warning:

I'm at a total loss. It was fine prior to the uninstall/reinstall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I think my windows XP may be corrupt. If I close firefox, I must create a new profile every time by running
firefox.exe -ProfileManager
and even when I do I cannot see the profile file I just created. I cannot load a profile from a flash drive or other location.
so I leave firefox open for as long as I can until I have to shut down my computer.
My Documents and Settings file constantly has 'read only' box highlighted even if I change it for 'all folders, files and subfiles'
I've searched for similar problems here but any ones I found were not applicable or not answered.

I've done a Malwarebyes scan and things look clean, will post any other things requested if you think you can help.
I'm running to the store, will look back in about 30 min.

Thanks in advance

I want to install (Not update) a new version of Firefox.
When I install it, will it see my older version of FF and retain my current profile? Or will it just wipe it out and give me a new one?

Don't laugh, but I currently am using 3.6.28. It works for me with no problems, but I think it is time to upgrade to a newer FF version.

So, what would happen to my original profile? I have made a backup of it.

A:Firefox instalation question...Profile

Why not just use the Update - - it's been working well for me. Been using FF for years and now, after successive updates, I am on 30.0.

Be that as it may, I am sure your profile will be kept - - but you may need to reinstall any extensions and addons with a new install.

Well I've had this problem for a while, and I can't for the life of me figure it out. Whenever I have firefox open, and I want to open a new window and click on the firefox quick-launch icon, or whenever I click a link while FF is open, I get the "choose user profile" prompt. The only way I can open a new window is with going into firefox and "ctrl+n." This is especially irritating when clicking links in AIM, etc. and I have to go, copy the link, open the new browser and then paste. I've tried reinstalling firefox, and changing my setting to open external links in new tabs, and in the same window. It still doesn't work. Any help is appreciated.

Running XP Home Sp2,F/F

When I go to Start/run and type in:

Start/run firefox.exe -profilemanager

Firefox logs me onto my ISP home page, just like I had clicked the Mozilla icon to log onto the internet.
This fails the same way on my laptop running XP Home SP1,so I just know it's me,but I don't see the error.

Check your Task Manager and make sure that Firefox is not running in the background. Try the command again.
You might need to uninstall and reinstall Firefox from the Control Panel. Your profile folder will not be deleted.

A:Firefox User Profile Problem

Have you tried a complete uninstall/reinstall of Firefox.Note: You will have to go back and redo all of your personal settings (Options), as deleting the Profile folder will erase everything Firefox related. You will be starting with a clean slate. To completely uninstall Firefox, you will need to delete your Profile folder. This file is not removed when you uninstall Firefox from Add/Remove. It will retain all of your previous settings, and re-apply them to your new install, if it's not deleted. That's why, when you install a new version of Firefox, your previous settings, bookmarks, passwords, etc., all remain the same. For a Fresh (start from scratch) install, this folder has to be removed. You might want to make a copy of the Bookmark.html file, before you uninstall, and save it to somewhere you'll be able to find it.This is where all of your Bookmarks are stored.Set windows to show hidden files,How to see hidden files in Windows Then navigate to:C:\ Documents and Settings \ "your user name" \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Firefox \ Profiles \ default.random characters \ Bookmark.htmlAnd make a copy of the Bookmark.html fileThen you can replace, the new one created, with the old one, you copied. After you install Firefox, delete Bookmark.html, and replace it with your saved copy of Bookmark.html.Restart Firefox. That way, you'll have all of your Bookmarks back. Now for the uninstall.Uninstall your current version of ... I'd like to set Firefox Profile Folder as an item in Windows Places Bar.

Common File Dialog Box - Customize Places Bar

The folder's name includes random characters assigned by Firefox.
Is there a way to set the item in the Places Bar to "Firefox Profile" (i.e. NOT "xyxyxy.default") without changing the folder's name?
Thank you.

A:Set Firefox Profile Folder in Places Bar

Hello Yaron,

You might see how it'll work by creating a shortcut of the folder with a name you want, save the shortcut to where you want to keep it at, then use the shortcut's path in the places bar to see if it will display the shortcut name instead of folder name.

Hope this helps,

I've been using an SSD for about 2.5 months and I've noticed a significant increase in writes from both firefox and chrome, I used to have a 2-3Gb/day max write now its going between 10-20Gb and its mostly from chrome and firefox, Im using SSD ready to monitor the writes on my SSD and it points that mozilla and google folders under /appdata are doing 90% of the writes as well as the mozilla folder under /roaming

I have a mechanical harddrive connected as well and would it be possible to move the said folders to that drive ?

A:Moving the /appdata and /roaming for firefox and chrome

It is probably the caches that are doing the writing. You can redirect the caches to another disk. In Firefox you can change the location of the cache through the about:config configuration editor (type about:config in the url bar. The entry you want to change is browser.cache.disk.parent_directory.

For chrome, it is a command line option --disk-cache-dir

I currently use several different Firefox profiles and they are all grouped together on the taskbar. When I hover the mouse over the Firefox icon, it will display the name of the currently opened tab or window of each different profile. Is it possible to change anything so that it will instead show the name of the profiles? For instance: default, Stocks, Developing, etc?

Hey, All.

I was just browsing with firefox yesterday and then a blue screen occurred. Blue screens were not new to me since my hard drive is getting really old and I believe the blue screen was caused by my deteriorating hard drive.

Anyways, after rebooting windows ran check disk but as it was running I saw something new from my normal check disk blue screen recovery runs. It was doing something called "File cross linking" I did not know what it was so I just let it run. But after a while it stopped the cross linking thingy because hard drive space run out (my hard drive had only 4 gb of free space remaining).

It then exited the check disk and after I logged in to windows, I ran firefox. To my surprise all of my tabs, addons, bookmarks, etc. Were gone! But I was not really affected of this since I keep a back up folder of my profile folder so I just simply copy and pasted the back up unto the profile folder. I then ran firefox again and all off my things were back in order. So my problem now is that windows was telling me that free space remaining was really few. I cleaned with ccleaner, and then looked for the mysterious file or folder that ate up 3 gb of my remaining 4gb remaining.

I found out that the folder that ate up the memory was the firefox profile folder. I then uninstalled firefox and then the 3gb that the folder ate halved.

I tried deleting the whole Mozilla folder inside my application data directory, but I couldn't. I kept getting a "C... Read more

A couple of months ago, I was having problems with slow Firefox performance, so I refreshed Firefox, which created a new profile from scratch. My problems cleared up. I subsequently installed two addons (AdBlock Plus and Flashblock), with no performance issues resultingFast forward to last night. I click on a bookmark for Craigslist, and up pops a new tab displaying a page from the Flash and Video Download addon ( I quickly closed it. I go back to browse and I notice new icons on the Firefox toolbar. Then I notice they're not really new: they are icons for the addons that I had prior to refreshing Firefox a couple of months ago. I open up Addons Manager, and they're all back--one of them being the Flash and Video downloader (which shows its last update as October 30, 2015, the night this occurred). Then I clicked on a link to a website, and Firefox kept popping up prompts asking me if I wanted to accept cookies for the site--which was what I had configured Firefox to do before I refreshed it, but not after. I went to look at my profile. I had a shortcut to the new profile created when I refreshed; the shortcut's target was gone. Thanks for looking at my problem today.I use Firefox ( currently on 38.0.5 ) I have gone through several upgrades on F/F from 29 onwards. All the same. Seems to all websites the same, FB, Twitter you name it, all the same. Easy media player performs quite well with no interuptions at all even when using other programs in the background.I've had a look at plugins for F/Fox but there is only a small list to try & disable. I am currently trying to disable one at a time to see if there is any change. Can someone suggest how I might be able to cure this problem please?Thank you ImnoGuru.

Reduce background takes. Adjust your screen saver stuff. Defrag your Hard drive. Use another Browser. Chrome does video better.Your are still using XP? I'm still on Firefox 2 for the one single reason that I can manage and synchronize bookmarks between computers in a very simple way that later versions of Firefox does not allow.

Currently, I have five computers in my home/shop/office that all use the same bookmarks file and here is how it is done: I keep the bookmarks file for all systems at D:\AC\Netscape\bookmarks.html. Every two hours, a batch file is run that synchronizes the bookmarks file among all five systems. I can also run that batch at will if needed more often. This keeps all five systems using the same bookmarks.

Firefox 3 sadly eliminated this capability and from the Googling I've done, I'm in a very large group who need a way to change the default location of the bookmarks.

Is there a way to change the default location of the Firefox 3.x bookmarks?

Just put on the Windows 7 RTM. 15 minute install : most impressive. Then a 2 hour wrangle trying to get Firefox 3.51 going : most infuriating.

Previously I have shared Firefox profiles in dual-boot without a problem. One just has to point Firefox on the second OS at the location of the original profile with FF profile manager. However..

I am getting the following error message with Widnows 7 every time and with every profile.

"Firefox cannot use the profile because it is in use.
To continue, close the running instance of Firefox or choose a different profile."

I have tried every suggestion on the Firefox help page (but the last) without success.
Profile in use - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

To be honest I suspect it is something to do with folder permissions in Windows 7. Immediately after installing Windows 7 I had to change the drive letter assignments using Disk Management, because Windows 7 did not take the lead from my XP drive assignments as I had hoped.

However, having changed the drive letters back to my liking (apart from C: for Windows 7) I found all drives, folders and files to be read only!? I selected all and changed their properties to read and write (including the option to change all subfolders), but it does not seem to have worked properly. Every further subfolder is still read only! My patience with this is wearing thin. What can be done?

A:Firefox - Problem sharing a profile in dual-boot

I use same profiles folder for Windows 7 and Vista. No problem at all. My profile folder is in a drive which has the same letter in both boots. For instance. It is always f:\Profiles, no matter if I boot 7 or Vista. Never had a problem. Just make sure FF is the same version in both boots as 3.5 has some incompatibilities with previous versions (specially passwords)

As of today, in our domain environment consisting of Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Enterprise machines, we are experiencing the "User Profile service failed the sign-in - User profile cannot be loaded" error message whenever a user tries to login.
This only affects users new to the particular machine. If they have signed on before and already have a cached account the computer logs them in with no issue. This is occurring on both Win8.1 and Win7 machines. We are an academic institution so this is becoming
a huge problem in our labs. Students generally use different computers so this is popping up very frequently. I have a solution for the issue. It appears that on the non-working machines that the "Default" user profile is corrupt. I have discovered
that if I find a machine, Win8.1 or Win7, doesn't matter, that is allowing first time users to logon I can copy the "Default" user profile and replace the corrupt one. I must first permanently delete the corrupt profile before copying over the new
one. I am doing this over the network by navigating the C:\users\ folder. Even this way is becoming cumbersome though as we have over 1000 computer in labs. I have googled and googled and I keep seeing the same answers offering various solutions, none which
are any more practical than my method. I cannot find information on a cause or a reason of why this would just crop up out of nowhere. I suspect maybe a Windows update but I cannot verify that yet. ... Read more

I've been having some problems with my computer since some weeks ago, I decided to change my Document folder from C to D drive since I had games taking too much place into it. I created a new folder in my D drive and moved the folder there by using the move method of the folder.

Since I did that, I had some problems with games/browsers, It was okay at first but now I can't load pages like "Google, Youtube, facebook and others" into Google Chrome & Firefox (And I can't download new addons on Chrome, It won't load it at all). I found a way to get them by using a Portable version of Firefox/Google Chrome but every day I have to delete/reinstall the portable version cause it won't load them anymore. And today the portable version got really slow, almost unusable.

I'm guessing since most of my programs were already installed, It caused a problem to them by moving My Documents folder and I'm not sure if there's a way to resolve this problem.
(My computer is actually not English so If I need screenshot or anything else I'll translate them)

A:Moving "My Documents" folder, problem with Firefox/Google Chrome

Move that folder back; simply make shortcuts to the subdirectories you need. And, "tell" your programs to save their created and modified data files in D. You can parallel My Documents, have a double on D, copy everything from that C to D. Leave the defaults belonging to Windows OS and programs as, that's my suggestion

We have users on Windows 7 Enterprise machines.  No one has a roaming profile. Users cannot install programs.  The users move around so they don't use the same machine all the time and there may be 20 profiles on one machine.  They don't
always logout but the machines are restarted once a week at least.   Occasionally we may delete profiles on the machines but this is a remote site so we seldom do.  Users primarily use remote apps. served up either by Citrix or web interface.
Little is done locally other than printing.  All machines are imaged with the same software. All users do the same thing.  One user in an office of six machines, can only login to three of the machines with a temporary profile.  She has no

none for this user.  No .bak profiles for her, nothing.  I found a post that suggested increasing registry size/reboot but still no clue.  This has been going on for months and she just let me know but I don't know if she called the help desk

Thanks.  She's working on the computer and does not logoff and back on quickly.  I just rechecked and there absolutely is not a .bak with her name.  On either computer.  I did find one for Temp and one for another user so now I have a

Guess I will just re-image the computers although I'd like to figure it out but I don't have the spare time to waste and don't want my user to keep getting the temp profile.  My company won't pay for the support and frankly, in all the years I've

Ok so my buddy's ancient xp laptop has failing video. I logged onto it as an administrator and shared all the users documents. I proceeded to another pc in the house running Vista and created an administrator account with the same credentials as the laptop's then copied (mostly I used copy but for a few folders I used the move command) over the network the primary users profile folder. It took two attempts. It failed to connect the first time but succeeded after I returned to the laptop and disabled simple file sharing and gave the laptops administrator's user account I shared the folders from security permissions to all user folders in question.

Hey guys,

Yesterday, I shut down my computer. A few hours later when trying to log back in, I get logged onto a blank profile, which I assume is a temporary profile.

Curiously the ProfileImagePath string under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-842173820-3506557639-1618326103-1004 is pointing to C:\Users\Mike_2.Mike-PC instead of C:\Users\Mike_2, which I assume is a temporary/alternate profile. (which I didn't create)

This has happened before, but usually a few restarts fixed the problem, however, that doesn't seem to be working now.

My question is, is there a way to reassociate the profile with the correct user folder? Or do I have to transfer everything over to a clean profile?

A:Solved: User profile dissasociated from account/logging onto temporary profile?

Its not an association issue, the user profile is corrupt, and is replaced by a temporary one.

Best thing to do is create a new user account, and migrate to that.

Xp was installed, no problems. Now, however, my CPU usage spikes to 100% when doing very minimal tasks such as moving a window around the screen (computer lags, leaving traces of the window around the screen) or even scrolling up and down on a web page with the mouse wheel.

Weird thing is, I can navigate both hard drives just fine. I don't know if my CPU is dying, motherboard dying, or what... But is there anyone that can help me out with this?

I want to preface this inquiry with the following: this is a home lab environment and does not affect production systems in any way. Any information provided will be tested in a test VM prior to execution on any critical system.
I recently joined my primary home system to my lab domain. I wanted to retain all of the settings and configurations of my local system but use a domain account to login. I followed this migration write-up:
Step by Step : Migrate Local User Profile to Domain User Profile with all Settings

The gist of the migration involves adding the domain user to the ACL for the C:\Users\localUser with Full Control and propagate those permissions through the folder. This step worked without issue. Then, modify the ACL for the HKCU hive by adding the domain
user to the ACL with Full Control and propagate those permissions through the hive. This step appears to work, but some keys cannot be modified. Finally, we change the ProfileImagePath for the domain user SID under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
and reboot.
The change appears to have worked without issue. All of my settings are intact, and the look and feel is as expected. One very significant problem, however, is that the window (explorer.exe) size and location cache is not functioning. If I click on File

I figured out my own issue. Don'tcha love it when that happens?
I logged into the affected machine as the domain administrator, and when I loaded the ntuser.dat hive for the affected user, I noticed that the \Software\Classes key didn't exist. It did, however, exist for the logged on user and it appears to correlate
directly to the key under HKU\[SID]_Classes.
On a hunch, I logged back into the affected profile, drilled down to HKU\[SID]_Classes, and when I checked the permissions, I noticed that the domain user did not have explicit permissions to the key and subkeys. I added Full Control permissions, propagated
them through the key and subkeys, rebooted, et voila! Everything is back to the way it should be.
I'll be leaving a comment for Mahdi Tehrani to ensure this is done to prevent issues like I had.Ron Arestia, MCSA (Server 2012)

Hi. I'm having this problem where when I tried to log into my computer it gave me this thing that my user login has failed and a temporary profile had been created. I was looking at other form posts with this problem and going through the steps. But while I'm in safe mode at the moment I still can't get into my administrative account on my computer. It won't let me access it because the profile is corrupted(I'm assuming?)

I was using: User Profile Service failed the sign-in - Fix in Windows 8 this thread to help me. But I'm stuck on step five because it just says: profile image path: c:\users\TEMP which is not my user profile but under the .bak it says my correct profile.
I don't have another admin profile. I'm the only person who uses my computer.
Ugh I don't know what the hell I'm doing I'm terrible at this kinda thing.
Please help :'(

I have an issue that I need serious help with. (The user is my boss...nuff said.) He has been using a laptop with windows 7 professional for some time now and recently he reported to me that when he undocks his laptop and takes it on the road (for example) he does not see his desktop icons, quick launch etc... If he saves a file to the desktop for example, it is gone once he logs off or reboots. We recently got him a new laptop running windows 7 enterprise and are still seeing the same issue! Now, we are using roaming profiles in our environment and I am considering moving him to a local profile as this is really the only machine that he uses. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix his local profile? I want to say that it either related to GPOs or his user account as this happens on two different machines. As far as redirection, we have his documents redirecting to his home folder but there are not other user policies applying to his account. Thank you for your time and advice in advance!

A:Local profile data not saved locally - roaming profile

The reason this is happening is that he is part of a domain likely, and when you are away from the network the computer cannot login into the Domain. He will have to switch his profile to local.

I followed the tutorial here User Profile - Change Default Location and it worked beautifully... All my user docs are on the D drive and the Start button entires all point to the new location.

HOWEVER when I tried to log in this mornias wand was faced with my normal log in prompt for a password to my profile, it accepted it, and then told me "The user profile service failed to login. User profile cannot be loaded.

It's the only account, so I cannot get in via another account.

I assume it's looking for something on the D drive instead of the C drive (or vice versa) ... But I carefully followed the tutorial. I assume one registry setting is off. ProfileImagePath???

I can only now get in via F8 options. I tried safe mode, but there is no regedit in safe mode And it won't let me create a new account .

I can rebuild yet again (win 7 has not been kind to me) but not sure if my last image was before or after the user profile change

Are there other boot f8 boot options to get me out of the jam??

A:HELP! User profile service failed the login - profile cannot be loaded

Via the help panel I can now get into regedit.... But now what?

I looked at steps 10 to 14 on the tutorial and I have the correct registry setting, ie ProfileImagePath pointing to D:\users\media

So is there another registry item to change?

The ProfilesDirectory key says %systemdrive%\users. Should it be changed to d:\users??

The tutorial went on to say I could delete my c:/users/media folder....which I have not done yet, so I don't thinks it's that.

A:Windows Cannot Load The User's Profile But Has Logged On With The Default Profile

Corruption of the user profile can be a pain to sort out, especially if it’s the index file that’s failed. SOMETIMES, however, simply logging off, leaving the computer at the ‘Press Ctrl+Alt+Del’ screen for about 30 seconds or so, then logging in as usual, can solve this without any further intervention, so I’d suggest giving that a go first.

Further suggestions are a bit more involved.

Log in as another user with administrative rights (such as Administrator) and then open the My Computer icon and navigate to the local hard disk and into the Documents and Settings folder. Look there for the folder which has the same name as the user who’s profile cannot be loaded and go into it. You may have to unhide hidden files and folders (from the Tools menu, select Folder Options and then the View tab, then, in the Advanced Settings box, under Hidden Files and Folders select ‘Show hidden files and folders’) and then locate the file NTUSER.DAT and rename it NTUSER.OLD, then log out, and back in as the failed user. This should replace the corrupted file and allow you to log back in.

If that fails for any reason, again, log in as another user with administrative rights (such as Administrator) and then open the My Computer icon and navigate to the local hard disk and into the Documents and Settings folder. Look there for the folder which has the same name as the user who’s profile cannot be loaded and rename the folder; usu... Read more

when i try to create a new user profile ~ with or without a password, it shows up on the main login page, but when i click on it to open, the message "UserProfileService_service failed the logon_user profile cannot be loaded". i have searched microsoft support with little solutions listed. and the ones that are listed seem too technical for me to be trying on my own. there are many posts there with this problem, but they all seem to be several years old. are there any current fixes to this problem?

i am using windows 7. i have never been able to create any accounts other than my administrator account & the one account i use for all my general computer use. i have been using norton 360 with no problems. i have resorted to just using any "log in/log out' links on all the sites my husband wants to use.

i am really not all that confident doing anything super technical to fix this, since i don't have a real understanding of different extensions or types of files. i am afraid i could really mess everything up really bad. but, it would just be SO MUCH EASIER & FASTER if i had my account & my husband had his own account.

if you can help me out with a fairly easy fix here, i would be so happy. and, if you post an answer to this post, please speak like you would to a 5 year old. i don't know most terms, but if i was helped every step of the way, i'm confident i can do this myself... that is if there really is a solution to this problem... I am trying to rename a user profile under C:\Users (I am logged into the Administrator profile on my computer), and am getting an error that the folder or file is in use, so I cannot rename it.

I have tried multiple options to fix it after researching online:
I tried ending the "explorer.exe" process, and then restarting it via "new task" in task manager. It was suggested that this would "unlock" the file or folder for a short period of time. It did not work for me.
I tried clearing both my recycle bin and my "Thumbnails" folders from Disk Cleanup. That also did not work for me.
I was going to try to disable thumbnail caching temporarily by following instructions online, but the computer was unable to locate "gpedit.msc".
Could anyone advise? This is a very important step of a process I'm being worked with on in a separate thread and I cannot proceed until I have renamed this file, and am afraid to restart the computer since I've just done a "takeown" command on this Administrator profile.

This question has been raised before by others but apparently no solution was offered by anyone.

I have two user profiles on the same PC with one (main user)having the administrator rights.

Today, when I attempted to log in as the main user, I got the following message:

" Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator."

I found one microsoft support note which suggests that a new profile needs to be created and the contens of the old profile except .dat files have to be copied in the new profile folders.

However, all my folders in the original profile including MY documents and Favorites are EMPTY.

I am unable to retrieve valuable files. Can anyone suggest a step wise procedure to locate where my files have disappeared.

By the way, I tried system restore operation to restore the system three days backward. yet, everything is the same and the folders are empty. so, i have undone the system restore. thanks

AS AN ADDITIONAL INFO, if it might help, i have discovered rather large "FOUND.000" folders ion"C" drive. the last one has the size 897 mb which is about the same time that the folders and files disappeared. i have read that these foldrrs are similar to .chk files and can be remvoed. however, i am not sure of this in view of the missing data.

I have a client that has to regularly move emails from his inbox to a PST on his company shared drive. Moving files under 100kbs seem fine but this client needs to regularly move emails upwards of 5Mbs in size to his PST on the share. When he does move these files his outlook gets hung up to the point of completely freezing everything on his computer just to move the email. It can take upwards of 10-20 minutes to move one file.

The troubleshooting I have performed:
-I tried setting his network adapter to 100 Mbs Full Duplex, didn't appear to do anything
-Speed test his connection, he is running about 1.2-1.5 Mb down and 1.5+ Upload, so no issue there.
-I tested moving a 15Mb file to his shared drive, this seemed to be uploading fine, after a minute or 2 it was nearly half done, so this leads me to believe the issue is more pertaining to outlook.
-I then killed his outlook profile, recreated him a new one and remapped the PSTs.
-Had him test moving files again, and the same issue is still occurring.
-The client also reports this was not always an issue and had recently started happening.

At this point I am stuck and would like any advise anyone may have to offer for a solution.

Hi everyone.
I just bought a new SSD.
I plan to whipe my old drive and put the OS onto the SSD. On my current drive I quite a few games.

The question I have is about backing up games/moving the files.
I have steam, origin and battlenet. I tried to use steam back up before, it stopped working and now I have a file that I can not delete.

I have not found a battlenet backup, or an Origin backup.
Due to all of the games being digital, I do not want to spend a day downloading all of my games over again.

The question I have:
Is it possible to move the files (i.e. programx86 --> steamapps) onto my external, then when the clean install is done, move the files back to the same location?

Is this a viable/possible solution, or what would you recommend I do to spare my data cap/time?

Thanks all.

A:Moving files to external, formatting then moving back.

If your system is working well the best way to do this is to take an image of the old drive and then restore it back to the SSD, or simply direct clone the old drive onto the SSD. I've had good results with Aomei Backupper to do this. If SSD space is a problem you could remove data and unused progs first, and do disk cleanup.

If the system is on its last leg, you're probably going to have to reinstall the progs onto a fresh install of Win7 on the SSD.

In either case, back up your valuable personal data.

Hey all!

I've been experiencing stability problems on/off with my rig, but now they seem to have been stabilising (hurr durr).

I've recently bought a 1TB harddisk and 4 additional GB of Corsairs XMS3 DHX RAM, bringing me up to a total of 8GB.

Now, I tried to install 6 GB first, in tri-channel mode, and it worked fine.
When I installed the remaining two in dual dual-channel mode, however, my profile will not load, and I am given a temporary user profile. All my personal preferences are gone, including firefox bookmarks, desktop shortcuts, start menu preferences etc.

I'm posting a query to corsair as well simultaneously, but do any of you know or have a clue as to what might cause my problem? Or more importantly: how I can fix it?

I ran the memory diagnostics tool included in vista, and it told me I had a memory problem, but did not specify what.

Thanks for all help. It is much appreciated!

Hi all. I've been building a modest PC so that I can simply run my games emulators through my plasma TV as well as films and music. I'm using the old D: from my other computer which holds all the games, films and music.

After a nightmarish 2 days of hardware problems I finally have XP installed but my current roblem comes when I log on and at the windows startup screen I get the message -

'Windows cannot create temporary profile directory. This may be caused by insufficiant security rights.'

Which is then followed by this message -

'Windows cannot load the user profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system'

So I am on windows but nothing works because I need administrator right and permissions to run programs like my emulators (or at least to take ownership of them to make them run!) I went to user accounts in the control panel to mess about but any changes I try to make are met with the message -

'Object required'

I have googled the problem and there seems to be absolutely zero information on it. The microsoft site had a small section about part of it but the fix it gave was completely useless and did nothing.

Can anyone here help with this? I'm at my wits end being so close.

Thanks. System specs below -

When attempting to login to my main profile, after a several minute wait, Windows loads normally, but I receive a notice saying that I have been logged into a temporary profile, which would be deleted upon shutting down.

As far as I can tell, this started happening immediately after switching my cell phone from "LG Software" to "Charge Only" mode, while windows was logging in.

During every bootup, I am now prompted with the following options:

Launch Startup Repair
Start Windows Normally

Upon selecting "Startup Repair", I am immediately shown the error "a required device is inaccessible".
It has just recently stopped giving me the "Startup Repair" option any more so I can't get the exact error code, but I believe it was 0x00000225, or something similar.

I cannot successfully load normal safe mode, or safe mode with networking. They fail with blue screen. I can only load safe mode with command prompt.

I have tried running "sfc /scannow". It finds errors after about 20% but says it is unable to fix them. Attempting to run chkdsk /f does not run on next boot.

It's been a while since I've done a backup, so I'd rather get this profile working again, than have to re-install. I also need to mention that this is an OEM (Dell) copy of windows, so, doing a repair install doesn't seem to be an option, or is it???

Originally I had all my data files in drive D and only programs in drive C. Somehow my old user profile got corrupted and the Backgound wall paper is not working properly. So I created a new admin profile to fix it but now I have a mess .

After I created a new admin profile and moved the old users folder/files to the new user , I decided to delete the old profile after everything seems to be working properly . When deleting the old profile I elected to save old user files to my desktop ( fortunately) . I now have a very fragmented system . Some of the folder/files are still under my old username in D drive , nothing in my new user name in D drive plus almost all of the folder/files from the old user ( in drive D) are now in a folder on the desktop where windows elected to place them when I elected to save the folders/files. I really need all the old user folders.

I would like to have the Data in either under my old or new username in Drive D instead of fragmented all over the place. I realize I ended up in this situation because I didnt understand fully what windows will do when creating and deleting user profiles.

Please suggest what I have to do to clean up the system?

A:Big Mess after creating new profile and deleting original profile

Before proceeding, I would backup the computer to an external location such as a USB HDD or network location. If you don't have the ability to do this, at least track down all the files you want and copy them to a USB flash drive or other external device

In windows XP, when you were connected to a domain network (i.e. office in place of work) you had a profile called Profile Template that was shared (being the default template for all/most/what ever users needed). Does windows 7 have profile template sharing, and if so how do you do it? The profile template profile can be used, but with windows 7 professional, we cannot find a way to share the profile in user settings (or whatever setting it is under computer's properties, advanced tab, user profiles settings). Whenever the profile is selected we cannot get the option to share it. Help would be much appreciated how to do so. Thanks.

if he deleted the profile, with out deleting the files its all still there

go to my computer
doulbe click the C ( local disk that the os is installed on)
hit the documents and settings, in here will be all the users profiles
so if you see her log on thats her profile, you can go into and save data needed

you might have to change the folder view to see everything

open explorer, go to tools>folder options>view> change the radio button to show hidden files, and uncheck the hide protected os files and hide extentions.

if the data is here there, you will need a application to recover the data, google getback ntfs

The battery is no good on my Gateway laptop, so computer will only run a few minutes when unplugged.  I accidently kicked plug loose from wall and didn't realize it; I saw computer was shutting down due to low battery and I quickly plugged it back in, but it was already powering down.  When I re-booted it, it had to run through all the disk-scans and then when it finally booted, it was under temporary profile and not mine.  I tried to follow directions on Microsoft help forum ( to fix corrupted user profile, but their step-by-step instructions don't match up with my computer.
In particular, MS tells me to create a new profile and copy my old profile to the new one.  I created new profile, but it tells me to copy all files except the following: Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log, and Ntuser.ini.  On mine, there are 2 Ntuser.dat.log files and I don't have Ntuser.ini.  The other thing I'm not understanding is once I copy them, I can't figure out how to move it all to the new profile.
P.S.  I also tried to change the corrupted profile settings using this method: but had no luck there either.  When logged off/on had the same temporary settings as before.  Plus, the computer is running incredibly slow and locks up a lot when on the internet.  Anytime I have to restart it has to run through... Recently my computer was freezing a lot and I had to shut it down (from the turn on/off button) and I know this is bad.
Yesterday I shut it down like this then I tried to turn it on it didn't load past the "Welcome'' screen and after some time it loaded and a message showed ''You have been logged in with a temporary profile. You cannot access your files and files created in this profile will be deleted when you log off". I tried to log-in in save mode but it did the same thing.

I was going to try ''Repair user account'' to see if it works but i can't see the ''ntuser.ini'' file? (This is about trying to copy the the files from the old account to a new one). And there are 2 ntuser.dat files one is called ntuser1.dat and the other is ntuser2.dat (or something like this) and I don't know which one to copy. Also i tried to copy all the files but it said there's not enough space.

I read some things and it said there is either not any solution or there were some things that worked for SOME people but I'm not very good at computers and in these solutions it said to delete some thing but I'm scared to lose some things in my old account or to ruin my computer!

In the past 3 weeks I must have had 20+ PC's / Laptops that have had the same problem (see image below)
Although I know how to fix it and I have had it crop up before, I've never had it hit so many units in such a short space of time.
I've browsed quite a bit to see if there is some sort of virus/malware that may be causing it but there doesn't seem to be anything out there that might be the culprit.

I've scanned all the units for virus/malware and they all seemed to come up pretty clean. +15 of the units were win7 and +5 were win 8.

Any clues would be most welcome
