Any suggestions?

A: Program changed when install in Win 7

If you still have the old XP machine (or even just the hard drive) then first thing to do is image it using disk imaging software.

Then I would attempt to image it back to a virtual instance using Windows Virtual PC

You may need to use one of the many articles regarding moving Windows XP to new hardware or motherboard as it will probably BSOD to start with. (But you might get lucky!) or (and this is not a recommendation, and I have not used Acronis like this for moving to new virtual hardware, only real hardware) software such as Acronis True Image Premium can image and restore to "new hardware"

But, if you can get it running, you should be able to continue to use this software when you next move machines (you will need to do some conversion to Hyper-V at that point, but you can cross that bridge if and when)

The harder method would possibly be to use Process Monitor to monitor which files and registry entries the software accesses on startup of the software, and copy those files and registry entries across, but that is beyond the scope of an answer such as this

Hi all-
Apologies in advance as I am not exactly technologically sound.
I tried plugging in my digital camera today, and though it did not come up, I hunted down the Removable Disk (E) drive, which I figured would open it. It told me that I had to choose a program to open it with, so I chose some kind of picture viewer. Then all the icons on my desktop turned into said picture viewer, and I cannot open anything but that program from the desktop. Also, when I go into Programs and try to open them, they don't work there either. Help!
I am using Windows 7. I have tried System Restore but it told me that it could not complete it and gave me some kind of error message with 0x80070005. It recommended that I turn off my protection or whatever to complete it, but I have Norton 360 and no idea how to turn it off!
Any help is greatly appreciated- we just bought this computer in November and now my husband is ticked off!

A:Solved: accidentally changed removable disk, now changed every program?

Welcome Tuckersmom !
When I connect my camera to either of our computers, the camera itself indicates on the viewer how to handle the pictures....
To replace the icons on the desk top, right click any empty place and select refresh, I think this should restore them for you.
My daughter uses Norton 360 and we have found that it disables the system restore. She does regular backups with Norton 360. If you have done that, you should be able to restore from one of those backups.
Let us know how it goes.

I am using Win7 Ultimate 64/ 8MB ram /Intel i5 CPU / Gigabyte MOBO

I was changing themes by using the control panel appearance section
and selecting the various themes available including High
Contrast, just to see how they looked.
After doing so and returning to the theme I had been using for some while
I noticed that three program icons had been replaced by the generic icon that usually indicates there is no program associated with a file.
Other programs are fine.
However, the programs still work but the .exe file ( in the programs folder)and the icon that shows up in the task-bar as well as the short-cut icon is not that of the program but the "generic" icon as mentioned.
I tried reinstalling the three programs but the same icon appears each time after
It is not such a big problem as I can use the program but I wonder why this could have occurred and if in fact it has anything to do with me selecting various themes.

The programs are
Diagram Designer / Edrawmind map / wordformat2.
which I believe are all 64 bit compatible and did have the program icon when originally installed.

Any suggestions to reinstate the correct icon?

When I was messing with it I accidentally opened it with Adobe Reader and it changed my default program to open all .exe files to Adobe Reader. I uninstalled Adobe Reader and it solved the problem but I would like to get Adobe Reader back. I cant find the way to change the program back. Any help? Can you be a little more specific than this? When were they OK? Did you install a program or an update recently that may have affected them?

You could try doing a System Restore to a date/time when all was working fine.

I have installed a surveillance system that allows me to view the cameras via IE. The IE viewer works well except that every time I start it, it turns off my taskbar's auto-hide feature -- and leaves it off. Also, I have to change it back to autohide manually after the viewer is closed.

I'm looking for a way to stop this resetting of my taskbar's properties and I have no idea how.

I have a PC with Windows XP and for some reason, many of my program icons changed to the icon of another program. This is my Mom's computer and lord only knows how this happened, but for example, when I click start > all programs > microsoft office > word, it's icon is not the word icon, but the icon for another program on the computer. It is like this all over the place.

When I click on word, it starts opening the program that is associated with the icon and not word. Any idea why this may be happening and how I can fix it? I tried right-clicking on the program > properties, but the find target button is grayed out so I can't change the program it's associated with. Any help on how I could fix this would be great. Thanks!

I have just finished updating my Vista x64 Ultimate to Windows 7 x64 Professional. I am in the process of reinstalling all my software and I have observed something usual.

In Vista when I use Control Panel>Programs and Features, most icons represent the installed programs. In Windows 7 many, but not all, are showing a generic icon for programs that Vista recognized correctly.

Is this a known issue or can I do something to get the program icons back?

Howdy folks!

Here's a weird one. Went over to a friend's house today to work on there computer as it 'wasn't working right'.

I noticed that all the icons on the desktop had their names changed to include numbers (ex Chrome(2345)), Inter Explorer(2942). The numbers seem to be random. Obviously trying to launch one of these did not work.

I then went into the Program Files folder and its seemed all the exe files and dll files were also renamed to include numbers...

I have never seen this before, and doing a search through these forums, and malware removal guides, it doesn't seem to have a fix (other than manually renaming the files one at a time, removing the number part.

I have included a screen shot for reference. In the screen shot I renamed the Itunes.exe, but it still would not run because the dll files are 'missing'.

Thanks for any input, but I think we are looking at a backup--->rebuild at this point.

I have just installed an old program "MAME32 version 0.95" on my Win7. The program works fine except that one feature doesn't work properly.

So I right click the program exe file and enable compatibility mode and select Windows XP (SP3), when I try again, the same problem happens.

Well, it's not a big deal so I just go back by uncheck the compatibility mode but now, I notice that Win7 has added a shield to the program logo. There's no shield before I try the compatiblity mode. I don't like it. I uninstall and reinstall the program and the shield is still there. How to get rid of it.

A:program logo changed by win7, how to restore it back?

This is normal. The shield overlay icon on the program's icon is just to indicate that the program will Run as administrator (elevated) when you run it, and give you a UAC prompt requiring you to "Allow" it permission to run first.

I have an Advent (PC World brand) Laptop that comes with its own custom On-Screen Display software.

The software is made for 32 bit Windows with no 64 bit version available as far as I'm aware.

I have upgraded to 64 bit Windows recently and everything seems to work great except the OSD.

When installing. I'm given a choice of where I want to install the program in which I choose

C:\Program Files

after installation a mandatory restart is required and after the reboot OSD always ends up in
the other Program Files folder and I receive a error when trying to launch the OSD

I assume this error is because it gets confused being in the wrong directory (although I could be wrong and its simply just not compatible with 64bit Windows)

Anyone have a way to force it to install in the standard Program Files folder?

its the only way to tell if things like caps lock are enabled or not, so its pretty frustrating without it.

A:Program refusing to install in standard program files folder

In 64-bit Windows, the folder Program Files (x86) is for 32-bit applications. Try installing your OSD application there instead of the Program Files folder which is meant for 64-bit applications.

A:Colors changed, can't install AVG, possible virus

MSCONFIG may have the answer. The utility mentioned here is available in most MS
operating systems after Win3.1, 3.11 and NT3.0. By entering the name seen here at the RUN prompt off of the Start menu, you will see a new window open with a listing of
various options named on tabs. On the first at the left already seen, Selective Start is
the little dot there to choose. Once checked, you travel to the last tab to see a total
of installed softwares including video and sound. These can easily be disabled to allow
AVG to continue to some degree. The next tab is where you will have to check a "hide
all microsoft services" option to do just that. The remaining can now be disabled. From
there, retry installing AVG after a reboot of the system. The list of active program now
is on the disabled list and non active to cause any interference. Spyware is possible.

Microsoft recently bought the GIANT Software Co. and it's antispyware software that
is now called the Microsoft AntiSpyware Remover beta1. This is a free spyware utility
that can be downloaded at:

In addition to the removing utility, Microsoft also has an online utility that will scan a
system while your are on this web page for no charge. The "malicious software" scan is
also available to download for later use. However, it has a one run function compared to the full time schedule the remover can be set to. The scan is free at:

I had a stock system from Dell (an inspiron 530)

[Windows Vista]
Intel E4400
Foxconn G33M02 (OEM motherboard)
2GB DDR2 RAM (upgraded to 4GB)
160GB Seagate HDD for OS
640GB WD HDD (additional) for Storage
NVidia 8600GT

Today I recieved my new Asus P5N-D [NVidia 750i chipset, second hand came with no driver CD =S ] and installed it. It booted up and then came to an error saying that a vital system driver was corrupted (acpi.sys)
I tried many things, like repairing with CD, booting into safe mode etc. but nothing worked (I was unable to enter safemode due to more system files being damaged/corrupt)

I decided to disconnect the WD HDD and wipe the other hard drive using [email protected] killdisk.
Killdisk ran and deleted the existing Windows partition so I could install a fresh copy of Vista.
When installing Vista from the CD a status bar appears with "Windows is loading files..."
When it reaches the end it reboots into an cycle that leads nowhere.

My guess would be that it is hardware or driver related and that I may have to change some BIOS settings, but I have no idea what is wrong or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance,

I don't usually do a friend-of-a-friend thread, but one of mine is in trouble!

My buddies out west ran out of hard drive space and decided to install a new cd r/w drive (her old cd/r was dieing) to move over some data, and at the same time add more ram (sales guy sold them 256 mg).

Well, the install do not go well - after both were put in, the machine did not respond ... so they took them back out, and put back in the old ram leaving the cd/r disconnected.

Before they attempted this operation, I asked her to run Belarc.

Some oddities that I don't understand ...
1. Processor has changed from 233 to 150
2. Memory has changed from 60 to 32

She said the machine is now running incredibly slow

Not sure where to guide her at this point

Can you assist?

Many thanks

Hi & help!
I was having probs installing Office 2007 a while back and whilst using 2 forums for help to resolve the issue, one of the things i had to do was (i think) change the default install path for when i'm installing new programs. The 2 links for the help pages i was using are:
Office 2007 Install Error 2203 - Office Setup
Error 2203. An Internal Error has occurred.

The problem i've created is that now i'm unable to apply most updates for the programs that are currently installed (and thus on shutdown it always tries to apply updates, that fail) and also, i'm not able to install and new programs.
Any help in getting this resolved for me will be soooo appreciated - it's driving me crazy!

A:How can i see what i've changed the default install path to?

Click Start Orb. In search type cmd and hit Enter.
In the command window that popped up type
echo %ProgramFiles% and hit Enter

It should tell you the current setting as in
C:\Program Files

or whatever.

You can take a look at this:
Change Default Installation Directory In Windows 7 & Vista

But before messing with your Registry make a Restore Point and/or use ERUNT
to back it up.

I just did search and took a look at the registry settings in the link. I don't know if it works. Back things up before messing around with it.

Hello to all,
Hoping someone can assist. I have been using a program called Raw Therapee. I downloaded a new version and on installing it quit saying the old version must be removed. I could not find it listed in Revo Unistaller Pro, so I did a forced uninstall with the location of the main executable. This removed a lot of stuff. I checked the program folder and the folder and many files were still there, so I deleted them. I did a CCleaner in between and after. I then unhide and show system files and deleted the folders in the Appdata of main user and admin account, couldn't find it anywhere else.
CCleaner again and reboot. Went to install the new version again and it claimed that the old version was still installed. I did a search for *aw The* and found an entry in the hidden Program Data Folder. In the Admin account it will not let me in this folder to delete any remnants of the old version of Raw Therapee. Is there some way of fixing this??? Thanks for any assistance!

I am using a ASUS UL80vt laptop with a 320gb hard disk drive. It has been installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I would like to change the hard drive to a Intel 80GB SSD

There is a recovery disk that comes with the Asus, but there seems to be no way to install Windows 7 onto this drive.

I have contacted ASUS Technical support and they claim that they do not support the transfer of the operating system from 1 drive to another.

Can anybody point me to a thread or give me some advice on what to do in order to transfer get Windows 7 onto the SSD.

A:Windows 7 install on a changed hard drive

Save a Win7 Backup Image to an external HD, or to a primary formatted partition on your current HD, which you can use to reimage the SSD:

You can find out now what size this image will be by typing Backup into Start Search box, selecting "Create a System Image" then DVD to see what size the image is.

If the image is bigger than 80gb, you'll need to move some files off the of the Win7 drive to an external or a data partition.

I suspected virus damage. My fix was a clean install of WinXP SP2 including formating the hard drive. Now my ethernet is not recognized and my DVD is assigned to Drive H (there are only 2 drives total C and H). I have tryed several times to install new drivers for my ethernet and several other drivers including the mother board. Each attempt appears to ignore the .exe totaly. I suspect the bios has been changed but cannot locate a replacement version to test. Is there someother place I should be looking for the fix or another fix I can try?

Hi, First time poster but have been lurking for quite awhile. Decided to install Windows 7 Pro today but when the install completed, I noticed my drive letters were out of order.

Previously, my partition drives when running Vista Home Premium were

C: System
D: Recovery
E: Apps
F: Data

Now its automatically changed to

C: System
D: Apps
E: Data
F: Recovery

My HP Recovery partition jumped down the list and changed from D to F and shifted the letters of the other drives as well. I have no idea why it changed on its own as I only installed Windows 7 in drive C. The Recovery drive is the 2nd fullest driver on my HD behind C Drive.

Is this normal? Is there a fix for such a thing? Thanks in Advance.

A:Drive Letters changed after Windows 7 Pro install.

Open Disk Management by clicking on the Start orb and typing disk management, then press Enter.

Right click on the F: drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths..
Make F:, G:, to make room so you can re-arrange the other two.
Make E: F:
Make D: E:
Make G: D:

You should not have

C: System
D: Recovery
E: Apps
F: Data

I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 with the Windows 8 upgrade assistant, and chose the option to "install now".

I'm running windows 8 now, but I've changed my mind and want to do a clean install. How can I do that? I did't burn the iso to a USB the first time. And if I run the upgrade assistant again now it says I can't install windows 8 on this computer (because it's already installed)

Any help?

A:Upgraded, but changed my mind (want clean install, help!)

You should have an upgrade file on your desktop, click on that, it asks some questions and one of them is do you want to install later say yes, then another question do you want to create an ISO file just say yes, when it has created the ISO file, right click on it to burn it to a DVD.
Then boot from that to completely wipe your disk and reformat, make sure you have your key for when you start the installation. If you have a Windows Live account use that. Make sure you feel comfortable doing this and have anything you need backed up, this worked for me, I hope it works for you.

I was installing cygwin on my Windows 7 desktop. I guess I picked a bad mirror site because the download speed was very slow and it wasn't able to give me all the packages I wanted.

I closed the setup in too much haste. I think it was still downloading and not yet installing though. It said that closing it would abort the download and installation, roughly, and I clicked 'okay'.

Now I try to save something onto my C drive, into Program files or whatever, like a text file or anything. It says that I do not have the permissions to do so, asks if I would like to save into my user documents folder, and, in typical Windows fashion, it directs me to ask the administrator. My account is the administrator; I checked both in control panel and in the user select screen at boot.

I restarted the computer. Then I decided to delete all the cygwin files I could find (cygwin folder on C:// and the cygwin download repository) and reran the setup. It successfully completed after I chose a better mirror. I have my terminal window and it works!

But, even after restarting again, I cannot save to the C drive. Interestingly enough, I can save into the cygwin folder, which is in the C drive, but into no where else on the C drive.

I should mention that when I deleted the cygwin folder on the C drive, it was partially full, indicating that I might have stopped the setup initially during the installation phase.

I cannot find any other changes other than this saving permission problem.... Read more

A while ago I've done a Win7 clean install following the instructions in:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Under point 1) there is the link from which one can download the Win7 ISO file, put it on a DVD/USB medium, and perform a clean install. That way one can get rid of all the OEM's bloatware which sits on the HDD after having bought a new computer.

A few months ago the link in 1) took me to:
Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River ? My Digital Life
where I could download the SP1-U version.

However, currently the link under 1) takes me to a completely different site:
Dell Community
and that site doesn't offer the SP1-U version anymore!

Why was the download site changed in the link?

Not sure why the link was changed (The admins will have had reason) but the ISO's on that site are the updated ones anyway. If you check the x__-____ codes they match the U versions on MDL

Hello, I've got an IBM T43p Thinkpad laptop that a friend gave me to try and fix, they've been having all sorts of virus problems with it and can't seem to shift it. I took a look and did a quick MalwareBytes scan which picked up about 100~ infections which I removed. Once I restarted I noticed AVG was still reporting viruses, and the machine was running very slow.

I checked Task Manager and noticed that there were at least four seperate instances of Firefox.exe running, and an instance of Excel.exe running even though MS Excel wasn't open anywhere. These instances even ran upon starting up in Safe Mode which started to worry me.

I checked Regedit and browsed to the Winlogon section, and checked the Userinit key. The value was set to "C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,,C:\Program Files\ejbatyvw\mpsmhyfn.exe". I tried booting up with a UBCD disc and deleting the registry key and removing the file from the hard drive, however upon rebooting the file was immediately recreated and added to the registry again.

I decided to back up the data on the computer and do a full reinstall of Windows XP, after checking on a seperate computer that the files weren't infected themselves, and that machine seems to be running fine after several restarts and such so I'm feeling fairly safe in that regard. I proceeded to fully format and reinstall on the Thinkpad, but after completing the installation it took only a few minutes befor... Read more

Louis,This issue may occur if the Outlook registry key is corrupted. When other programs try to use the Outlook Simple MAPI interface, they cannot retrieve the required information from the registry. You must first remove the corrupted Outlook registry key, and then perform a Detect and Repair operation to have Outlook rebuild the key. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail\Microsoft Outlook
Select the subkey, and then press DELETE.
Click Yes.
Quit Registry Editor.
Start Outlook.
On the Help menu, click Office Diagnostics.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the repair.

Important: Above section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. My computer recently picked up 3 viruses in Java (one deeply imbedded and unable to extract).

I use Norton utilities and clean the drive/registries/and explorer weekly.
Please send any advise possible
Thank you

A:sudden error message CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio changed failed

REGSERVO is a Rogue program that tells you, you have problems and "we will fix them for you for $39.00!" "But. Wait! for an extra amount for shipping and handling we will really screw your Windows installation up!"

Of course they make you wait until they find the registry errors to tell you that you have to pay $39.00. I just did a google search on REGSERVO and the only ones that give RegServo good reviews are, and hear is the drum roll, Regservo itself. Stay away from any of these programs that say they will fix your registry then want money to fix the problems they found.

Also there is no need to run any registry cleaner. More often than not it will not help your problem or speed up your computer, and can indeed break your registry to the extent of having to reinstall windows.

If this is the system in yur Computer specs, have you been having any problems with needing to adjust the date and time lately?

this is very confusing to me ive never seen it so i found a way back onto the internet by using a shortcut i had.

not even sure how to start this. i dont know exactly what i did but everything was changed. i was going to try to watch a movie thats on my laptop, it said 'avi' and when i clicked on it nothing happened. i dragged it into itunes to see if it would play there, nope. i right-clicked it, picked 'open with' VLC, still nothing. right clicked it again and chose windows media center, nothing happened. i tried transfering the folder with the option available in media center, still didnt play.

when i closed media center i saw all my desktop stuff was changed to open with media center, i knew immediatly i screwed up pretty bad somewhere. i right clicked internet explorer and changed it to open with internet explorer, it then changed everything to open with internet explorer. when i clicked on internet explorer it didnt open, but it did open the download bar as if i downloaded it. it says "Internet Explorer.Ink" or .lnk. when i click open, the window comes up but closes right away.

can someone help me by telling me how to get everything back to normal?

A:[SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

It sounds like what you've done is associate a .lnk file (shortcut type) with an application and now all shortcuts will run with that application. The avi file you were referring too may be just that as well: a shortcut.

This has also been known to be caused by a malware infection, in which case if you suspect it, you'll have to report it to our security team in the appropriate Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help subforum.

This may help with the situation.

I recently purchased the

Wintergreen PM800-M2 Socket 478 Barebone Kit / 52x32x52x CD-RW / Modem / 350 Watt Power Supply / Keyboard / Mouse / Speakers

I put in the Prescot 3.0E 1M L2 Catch CPU and 512MB Kingston 3200 DDR ram also it has a Maxtor 60GB 7200RPM hard drive

When I start the pc it gives the message above, also it does not let me save the cmos settings for cpu i.e. it just hangs but it does let me change the settings for date time etc so I think it rules out a bad cmos battery.

I have also double checked the heat sink and fan connection + the memory.

The CPU is running at 58 degrees according to the cmos/bios

Any help would be greatly appreciated

A:Warning! CPU has been changed or CPU ratio changed fail.

I had the same problem (but on an Abit board) - it turned out to be defective memory so I siggest you run memtest for an hour (, which is a bootable CD or Floppy.

I am trying to install a program (nero) onto my computer.
Its a 400mb self extracting file and I had 1.2 gig free on my hard drive.
I got 70% of the way through the extraction before my computer said it had
run out of free space and terminated the installation.

My problem is it didn't free up the space once it terminated.
In my computer it says C drive only has 10mb.
I tried CCleaner to free up space to no avail.
I rebooted the computer and still only 10mb free.

How can I find where the 70% of the self extraction file is stored so I can delete it?
Its stolen over 1 gig of space i desperately need!!

Thanks a lot!

Is anyone aware of something in XPs SP2 that stops some process' from running? Like Kazaa Lite?
I'm having the problem mentioned by this expired post:
(Thats what led me here)
Im an experienced user, and it seems that either something in sp2 stops it from running, or EVERY copy i find has been "fixed" not to work (I've been installing from a KLR0076F.exe thats 3.3mb.)
It installs fine, but when you run it, a quick hourglass, klrun appears in the process list, then quickly disappears.

A:Program Won't Install

Can't fix your problem but I can tell you u r wasting your time. Kazaa Lite no longer works, even if you get it to install. As you probably know, kazaa lite is an unofficial 'hacked' version of Kazaa Media Desktop. The makers of the official KMD have updated their network to stop kazaa lite from being able to access the same network, and the people who created the 'hacked' version (kazaa lite) have been threatened with prosecution if they attempt any further hacking of the official product.

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The systen file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." If i choose close, it closes, and if I choose ignore, it closes.

Hi, new here. Needing help with Vista Ultimate, I had installed a realestate program called Agent Office successfully, my client attempted an online upgrade to a new version and it blew up the new/old agent office installation. I did the uninstall from windows of the apps, even used perfect uninstaller and removed all remnants, upon attempting to install started to get the 1607 Install Shield Scripting runtime error, googled and tried numerous fixes. As of now I have UAC Disabled, recreated windows temp, copied the installation to the x86 programs folder and tried to install from there, verified permissions and now when I try to install it I'm getting Invalid Program/System Directory error and still cannot install. Any suggestions appreciated, this is driving me nuts and I am ready to do a factory restore.

A:Cannot Install a Program

You'll probably need to clean out your registry. Download a free copy from Auslogics:
Free Registry Cleaner - Free Registry Repair and Cleanup from Auslogics

You could probably use the registry defragger, too; though not necessary to fix this problem: Defragment and Compact the Registry to Speed Up Your Computer

Hi, i am trying to install TuneUp Utilities 2013 v.13.

It was already installed to my pc, i uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller pro ,the uninstallation setup was not starting so Revo Uninstaller Pro deleted everything in the registry about that program and everything in the program files). The program now isn o longer in the control panel's "uninstall a program" feature.

Now i want to Install the program again and when i run its setup, it says that it's already installed, pls help. I tried doing a system restore and it did not work.

**I already tried sfc/scannow

A:Cannot install this program - Please help me :(

Always uninstall from Windows Programs and Features, no need for 3rd party/ in-between uninstallers because they can mess things up. It can be Revo's fault but also a glitch in TuneUp's uninstaller or settings. Don't really know.

You need a restore point from before Revo uninstalled the program because the registry needs to be in good shape.
Probably there are still some registry entries left, check manually in Program Files (and x86) and see if the folder with tuneup still exists. before you attempt any system restore.
Try to look in CCleaner as well and run a registry cleanup just to see if it detects TuneUp entries.

The program entries are located in Hkey_local_machine\software then look for TuneUp or its manufacturer.
Delete the right map or let CCleaner do it if it finds it then try the re-install.

Be careful next time.

I am a relative newbie to all this but here goes. I got thrown off another site for asking this question and still don't understand why. Something about illegal activity. So when I ask this, I'm hoping that instead off getting tossed, someone might be so kind as to tell me what I'm doing (or asking) is illegal.

My neighbour just bought a machine and uses WinXP. He has been using Kazaa since day 1. I recently heard about Kazaa Lite and tried it myself with Win98. Works great.

He uninstalled Kazaa (plus ran Ad Aware to remove all the spyware) and installed Lite. When he clicks the icon, he gets the hourglass but nothing else. He uninstalled it to go back to Kazaa but is getting a "Failed to initiate" message on the .exe file to install it. Now he can't use either.

I tried the same thing on mine (Win98SE) and have no problem.

Again, if this question is "illegal" can someone please tell me why.

If not, any suggestions of how to get this program working again?

Thanks much!!! Doc

A:Program won't install.

Hello DocD, and welcome to TSF.

I am not sure why Kazaa lite won't work on your friend's computer, but I can assure you that what you are doing is not illegal (unless you plan to download copyrighted material), since there are many legal purposes for peer-to-peer filesharing.

Has your friend run anti-spyware programs after installing Kazaa? If so, then that would have been the cause of his problem since Kazaa will not run without it's spyware files intact.

Hello guys!

I've just bought a new PC(part-based assembly), together with Windows 7 Professional.

I received it yesterday - the guys did a decent job and even installed the windows for me, so I got it ready-to-use. I've noticed there are some programs installed - Microsoft Security Essentials, Google Chrome and all the necessary components - NVIDIA stuff, etc...

I just renamed my user account and set a password and decided to start installing my software. I started with Aida64 Extreme, latest trial version from their website as I wanted to observe my specs and Dev C++ afterwards. For my great surprise, both installs fail in their own way. With AIDA, I could accept the license agreement and it failed upon the start of the installation process. With DevCpp, it doesn't even open any window, just the NSIS error. In another forum I found the link for the latest version of Windows Installer - 4.5 and downloaded it for 64-bit. It fails too. Please check the attached images for the exact error messages.

I've tried the Sfc /scannow tool and it reports everything is OK after it reaches 100%.

I've tried granting maximum permissions to the Program Files(and x86 one) to see if it has to do with permissions but Windows says I don't have the permissions to do it(my account is Administrator). UAC is set to the lowest level until this is fixed.

Microsoft Fix It tool (portable version) for installing/uninstalling software doesn't run at all. I double click it but nothing shows up.

A:Can't install any program on my new PC

I just renamed my user account and set a password

My thought would be that the renaming process messed things up, Windows doesn't really like that. Might try creating a New User as Administrator and try again, could use the same name but with one character difference like maybe a number at the end then reboot into it. If that works you could then delete the 'bad' account and if any data you want to keep you'll be given a choice to save it.

Sounds like your msiexec.exe (Windows Installer) is screwed up.

Hi there,
For some reasons, my home PC has been behaving strangely. I can't install any new application/program even though I can do it in the past (i've the administrator right). The installation process will just stop suddenly without any warning or error message. This is particularly frustrating as this prohibits me from installing any anti-virus software which may be able to diagnose the root cause of this installation problem. Recently, I learned about hijackthis software which can work without any installation. I ran the program and below is what I got. Will appreciate any advice on what I should do next. Thanks and have a nice day!

Please download SilentRunners.vbs - Right click & choose Save As... SilentRunners.vbs

Before proceeding, disable any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs that may block/disable scripts
Double-click SilentRunners.vbs to run it. This will take a few minutes.
When it's done, you'll receive the prompt "All Done!". It will create a file called "Startup Programs". Post ALL its contents here in your next reply.

Go to HijackThis> Config> Misc Tools

I'm running Vista Home Premium. Is there any advantage/disadvantage in installing programs by selecting the 'Run as Administrator' method???

A:Program Install

Yes - if the program has difficulties installing under normal permissions, Run as Administrator may overcome them.
But this won't cure all problems, just those specifically due to the lack of administrator permissions.

Under 'currently installed programs' the title is there, size is blank. Clicked on 'remove program' and it comes up 'the feature you are trying to use in on a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package.' The program had been installed and a relative added more more memory and have not been able to un-install since that time. The relative has not been able to resolve this. This is an HGTV home design interior painting program that I bought at Target. It does not require internet contact to work.

Or the file Uninst.exe is corrupted, which you can delete. XP will replace it if it needed.
