XP games not starting up anymore

Q: XP games not starting up anymore

After I ran registry mechanic and defragged my hard drive (perfect disk - thrice, although I stopped the defrag half way through), none of the latest games work anymore (Call of duty 4, Crysis demo, Bioshock), although older games like Heroes of might and magic 3 still runs fine. Whenever I click to start a game, the splash screen will start, the screen will go black like when one normally starts a game, and then I'm just back at the desktop, with no error message. All other software works fine, like Ableton Live 5 etc.

I should also say that before all of this I decided to clean up my hard drive and deleted some files mainly in C:\documents and settings\bernhard\local settings\temp. I did not delete any read-only files. Maybe this screwed it up?

It's strange because everything works fine except these games all of a sudden.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I started getting BSOD in August, but I fixed it on Sept 9th by updating my ethernet card. And my computer worked fine until an unexpected shutdown last night which was followed by a bunch of 0x9F problems, then 0x116 when I started up any game. I already did a disk check with /f and /r, and sfc /scannow. I also "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error in Windows 7 or Windows Vista did this in which I changed the TdrDelay to 8. I had the latest graphic driver, but I went back a version of the driver to see if that solved anything, but it didnt. Attached is a couple of my blue screen reports. Any help is appreciated!

? Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (original OS installed)
? It came preinstalled but in December I had to replace the HDD cuz it was failing so I installed it through a disk on my current SSD
? Approximate age of system (hardware): 3 years
? Approximate age of OS installation (if you know): 9ish months
? Have you re-installed the OS?: not for this problem

? CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3720QM CPU @ 2.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.6GHz

this question's for my sister, actually, who wouldn't let me clean up all the crap on her laptop. i told her eventually the laptop would give up, but she didn't listen

okay, so it turns on, loads up for about 10 seconds, then shut's off. my brother's friend said he ran diagnostics and nothing showed as being wrong. i could be totally off with that, but i think that's what he said.

any ideas what should be done or what happened?

for reference, it's a dell laptop, about 2 years old, and runs on windows xp.

Hi everyone

I just updated to Windows 8.1 Pro, and now the Windows Store isn't launching anymore, the tile expands over the whole screen and then I'm back at the start window. Some other apps did the same thing, such as mail and calendar. I uninstalled those, meaning to reinstall them, but, since the store won't launch I can't do that.

And I don't seem to be able to reinstall the windows store.

That said, I used to have all user files on a separate HDD, moved them by means of the audit mode described here on the forums. I used the same method again to undo the changes, then moved the moveable files as is supported by windows. Everything was working, then I updated.

Any idea what might have happened, or how I can fix it without doing a whole reinstall?

A:Updated to Windows 8.1, store not starting anymore

Alright, the store works on another account, but not on my main account. I guess some user file got corrupted on my account. Anybody knows of any way to restore the store settings (without refreshing windows and reinstalling everything... )?

I'm running windows XP Home and it won't start up in normal mode anymore. Well the computer starts off to the boot page where it says Windows XP home with the little thing running on the bottom and then it starts off from the beginning and takes me were I have to choose between safe mode, normal mode etc. I can start up in safe mode hence this thread but normal mode just won't work. This problem happens when my computer suddenly goes completely blank into a black screen and does not respond. I know that if I press the power button and hold it for 5 seconds, it's suppose to shut down. Well when that black blank screen appears, I press the power buttong once just like a mouse click and it shuts down. someone please help

A:windows not starting with normal mode anymore

there should be another start up option which is - last known configuration that works, try that, otherwise use a system restore point in safe mode, but you might lose some settings depending on when your last restore point was set. good luck

I think I am in the right place but if this thread should be in another spot let me know.

I bought a computer a while ago and because it has a GeForce 7800 GS video card it sadly has the infinite loop problem. I managed to fix the Blue Screen of Death errors this problem causes when I downloaded the latest drivers for my card. I haven't had the crash problem since, but still have video rendering problems when I play some games like Battlefield 2 for instance what happens is the environment goes all screwy, I see a checkerboard type map on the ground or the image of the gun I am holding has odd triangle shapes coming off it or when I get into a vehicle the view is all triangles and flashing object or the other characters in the game look all sparkly and seem to be made up of odd triangle shapes. The only way to fix this is to reboot the system closing the game and starting it again doesn't work. Anywho the main reason I am here is because since I updated the video drivers ( I don't know what they were before or if this is the real reason for the problem) or because of something else other than the driver update, I can't say for sure as I didn't notice the problem right away because I didn't start the affected games for quite some time after the fact. I can still play COD4 but COD5, COD6, and Black Ops all fail to work and close down before they start COD6 actually stutters at the menu screen and I have to shut the system down by pulling the plug.... Guys you won't believe it.

I reinstalled Vista yesterday because of this issue and also my games.
Yesterday everything worked.
Today I installed my applications and extra drivers and I started Racedriver GRID and it did the same thing.
So since its a new Vista install I checked what I installed today and removed the Windows Visual C and my Genius Fpen 610 driver.
Reboot and magically Grid and all my games started.

My Genius F610 Tablet driver for Vista was causing all the trouble!!!!
Can you believe that?

A:I can't play my games anymore!?

The only thing I noticed with Vista and games is sometimes a game will load and you get to a black menu screen for the game. I play Silent Hunter 4 and the first time I loaded the game in Vista I had not issues at all. Me being me messed up how to handle admin account and user account so I did a clean install to start over. Once done I loaded Silent Hunter 4 again to play. No issues, loaded fine. I clicked to play and I got the load screen. Once I got to the menu of the game it was nothing but a black screen. I could hear the music and see my mouse cursor but nothing else. So, what I had to do was go to my videocard tweak program ( I just use the one offered by Nvidia, it works fine) and reset my video card to all the default values. Should be just a box to check and apply to reset to defaults. Once done, I ran the game and all was fine. I closed the game out and reset my videocard back up to the tweaks I like. My game ran fine every since. Give it a shot, it worked for me.

Hey guys I have AT&T "High-Speed" Internet DSL. I used to be able to host games and such when I was directly connected to the modem and nobody would lagg, and I would never lagg in games. Anyways, now I bought a linksys wrt54gl because I needed internet for myself and other people here at home. Well I tried the best I could, and I can join games (I play Borderlands and CS:Source and Team Fortress 2) but I can't host. When I host, my friends can't join, they used to be able to join me with no lagg... now they can't even join me.

I've tried port forwarding, disabling DMZ, removing the router firewall, tons of stuff. I can't get it to work, and I need to be able to host games again because I have the fastest internet.

Please help me out, I'm a newcomer and not too Tech Savvy but I'm not stupid either.

Thanks guys at Tech Support Guy Forums,

A:Can't host games anymore, help?!!

just for troubleshooting, put your computer in the DMZ (must have manual IP address). What the DMZ will do is route any traffic to that computer without any issues/port blocks etc.

about 3 days ago, i was just on the computer. I went on the internet, tried downloading adobe after affects, and played minecraft. after awhile i got bored so i turned off my computer. When i decided to go back on later, i couldnt play my only 2 computer games which are wizard101 and minecraft. Internet, videos and other programs work just fine. Its just wiz101 and minecraft.
When trying to open wizard 101 i get 3 errors (see attached file). After all those messages go away i can type in my username and password to start the game, but it just tells me i am unable to connect to wizard101.
For minecraft, i have 2 different minecrafts installed. One of the minecrafts let me enter my password and username and begin playing the game, but after that the minecraft window just goes black and stays like that. When trying to play the OTher minecraft i get this error -

ive tried uninstalling and then re-installing minecraft, thats all. It did not work though. I havent tried anything else yet. I have a windows Xp. If you need anymore info on my computer or need me to be more clear about some things, please let me know. Thank you.

I've already asked this on two other forums, no one can give me a straight goes:

Whenever I play a game for more than 10 minutes, it locks up and I have to reboot my PC. Even after I reboot, it still occurs every single time. Also, if I want my games to run smooth, I have to run them as soon as I boot up the PC or else the frame rate goes to hell. I have all the latest drivers for my vid/sound card and XP. Defragged around 2 days ago.

The 2nd problem happened long before the first but I didn't think much of it...

I have a gateway with a tsstcorp dvd =_ rw mlti format double layer drive and very suddenly I can no longer watch movies. Games play, cds play, audio fine. But I put in a movie and it's like there's no disc here. We've watched movies on it for over a year, so I checked multiple movies that once worked. I've followed the troubleshooting, tried to update driver. The wizard could find no better driver than what is already being used. I DO NOT get an error message. I just don't get anything to show up either under My Computer or in Media Center or Media player. Oh, and if it helps we have Windows XP Media Center Edition. This stumps me. I read somewhere "Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398)" was a problem but I even went to add/remove programs and couldn't find that paticular update, so I couldn't uninstall that.

At least 2 old games gothic 1 and gothic 2 ( raven ). Both played well on my winXP 64-bit. I reinstalled them both. Gothic 1 has no images in intro, and the sound is very spotty. Gothic 2 also has no intro images and even stopped in the middle of intro.

It is the same computer, except some more games. The computer is virtually not connected to internet except when I need a patch. What could be the reason?

one year old gaming computer
winXP pro 64-bit service pack 2
AMD phenom II X4 955
3.21 ghz 8 gig RAM
radeon HD 4870 X2 2gig video RAM
BTW, the DVDs come from " gothic universal " which includes 3 DVDs ( No1 is gothic 1, No2 is gothic 2 and No3 is gothic 3 ). No3 which is gothic 3 works fine so I have no reason to think that the other two DVDs do not work because they are dusty or scratched. Most other games played well including both old and recent games.

I already tried to go to the setup and run it in compability mode but still doesnt work..
What should i do? How come i use to be able to instal and now im not?

A:vista wont install some games anymore..

I have had the ability to play older games. I speculate that after installing SP2 on the x64 you lose the ability to install/play older x86 games. I cant play my MechWarrior 4 anymore and it has me annoyed. I also assume at times...even though sounds stupid..that newer hardware is just too high end for older games that they cant be installed on them. I know its silly but possible. Just keep trying in compatibility mold all the way back to windows 2000/xp settings and try it out more. It might just work if it feels like it.

Hi, I have a computer with hardware capable of running almost all current titles, EG Bf3, Dota2, counter strike GO, that was until a few months ago.
I started experiencing serious ping issues / packet loss in games causing me to completely freeze, then re-appear where I would have been. On counter strike source "string_cmds" graph peaks when this occurs.
The problem has got worse now, though, I can't play more then 10 minutes of ANY game before something goes wrong, be it a game crash or my whole computer shuts down resulting in one of the many Blue screen Stop errors I have said.
The game will run perfectly smooth, then suddenly my whole computer will shut down. This can happen about 5 times a day depending on how willing I am to restart the game.
Google chrome has just started to crash frequently now, too, and with limited income being 16 I need to fix this rather buy a new pc.

A:Multiple BSODs - 3B, 7e, 10, 50, can't play games anymore

Welcome to SevenForums,

I have had a look at your last 3 DMP Files, 2 of them are referencing memory.

Can you try these steps for me

Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+If there is no error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made earlier.

I received this error after trying to play europa universalis 4, after updating with the latest windows 8.1 updates. Yesterday all games worked fine, today, none of them run at all.

I've been searching for a solution but all i can find is update your graphics card / DirectX / install the Dx in the game folder itself, all of which i did, but none of it worked.

I've tried pretty much everything i could find about this problem, anyone have any ideas? Only difference is i am running all of this off a laptop with an intergrated graphics card though, and for the next few months my laptop is all i have in terms of a pc. Graphics card is Intel HD graphics 4600, which worked just fine a day ago.

I got back from christmas break, (hadn't used my computer for about 2 weeks) and my computer was running incredibly slowly on the internet ( i have cox high speed) and when I tried to uninstall and reinstall a few games, they wouldn't uninstall, and i couldn't use them. I think i installed a corrupted rollercoaster tycoon disc, and that messed up my computer.
I've run Norton internet security (05), ad aware, stinger, and tried my cox security, but norton keeps interfering with that. here is my log.

This is a very annoying problem as that I know I have ran these games before on this very system.

I start the game (in this case WormsWorldParty and Comand&Conquer), it comes to the main title screen and then a second later I am back on my desktop like nothing happend. I have way more than the min requirements, up-to-date Direct x and a clean install of windows 2000. (and in case you are wondering, these are fully paid for a registered games)

Any Ideas?

The BSODs started when I was playing graphically intensive games (downloaded through Steam, such as Everquest2 or Borderlands2) every so often (Sidebar--I've crashed recently trying to play Dragon Age Origins, a game that I've played previously with no trouble at all on this computer around 2 months back), but now they've gotten to the point where sometimes the computer trying to use Firefox or even just on the log-in screen before I even try entering my password. I've tried to look at the minidump reports and see what's wrong with them via WhoCrashed, but unfortunately it seems that they aren't always created. Especially since I know I've crashed many more times than the minidumps seem to appear.

Also, many times that the computer restarts (either automatically after a crash, a hard restart, or turning on after I shut down the computer) the Bios screen appears automatically. Quite a few times after I select "Save changes and exit" it'll come up with the Bios screen again. Additionally, the Asus loading screen may come up and stay loading for a couple minutes when loading, something which only took a few seconds in the past. There was also one time yesterday after a crash where the sound wouldn't work due to some sort of error.

I've ran scans from MalwarebytesAntiMalware as well as Avast Antivirus and the already installed Windows Protector scan and came back with nothing significant. I have a weekly defragment on my computer. I've ran the S.M.A.R.T. test and was... Read more

I built my computer from scratch and I'm having a problem when I start up games. Every time I start WoW, BF2, City of Heroes, computer will freeze right after I double click the icon and the game starts to load. If I reboot my computer and try again, everything works fine so I don't think it is a ram or cooling issue. I have the newest drivers, still no luck. I'd kind of like to fix the problem since rebooting every time I want to play a game is kind of annoying. Other than starting games I don't have any problems with the computer at all. Here's some of my hardware specs:

Athlon FX-55
Asus A8N SLI-deluxe
2 x GeForce 6800 Ultras

If anyone has any idea what's going on with this I'd appreciate it.

What psu do you have?

Is it supplying enough power for your system?

If your psu is a no name brand, then bear in mind that it will struggle to put out anywhere near its rated power output. Even a good quality psu only achieves around 70% efficiency.

My gf is crushed she just bought a brand new computer and everything has been working great no freeware everything installed quick and easy and she went to play Star Wars and the monitor cut out and the error message read:

"Cannot display this video mode, change computer display input to 1024x768 @ 60Hz."

Only problem is that is what I'm set at. I did it in the actual video card program and in windows display.
Deleted and re-installed the latest official driver for the video card directly from the mfg website.
Thought it might be a power issue on the card but I enabled the power saving settings in BIOS and unplugged the pretty case fans and still no dice. Tried two different PSU tests and they both suggested around 350 and I'm over that.

AMD FX-4100 3.6GHz
Radeon 6670
8GB DDR3 1333Hz
500GB @ 7200rpm
500W psu

Thanks guys for all your help I'm about out of ideas and hair by now =/

Possible its the PSU the computer is like 8 ft away and I already forgot the brand by the time I sat down so thats not a good sign =/ 14A on the +12v so probably lookin at 10A at peak load. Seems weak but mine is overkill I have an 1100W Antec PSU might try swapping them tomorrow and see if her set up works with my ps but let me know what you guys think.

A:No display after starting games

I'd say it's worth a try. A 500W PSU with a 14 amp 12V rail sounds a bit underpowered. If nothing else, it can confirm or eliminated the PSU as the problem.

So long story short, i bought COD:BO2 (no hating) for the holydays, installed with steam without a flaw and when came the time to double-click the game's icon to start playing, my computer BSOD'ed and restarted. I did my own research using bluescreenviewer and found out it was linked to ntoskrnl.exe (full crash report in documents below) driver. I then updated all my drivers but it didn't fix the problem. I tried writing to acer but their customer service was awful and sent me to the game producer.
Meanwhile, my friends started playing a game called Project Blackout and when I downloaded and installed the game the same problem occurred therefore I think i can safely assume my computer is at fault. My computer is relatively and can handle Diablo 3 max graphics (full info in attached documents below). I've read at some places updating my bios will fix the problem but I've also heard it's very risky and I don't have the skills to do such a thing.

thank you in advance future helper!

Hi guys. I'm having the Blue Screen problem. But its a bit different. I have this computer from a month and everything was runing smoothly and one day, after starting a game BAM! The Blue Screen of Death appeared for a second then computer restarted. The interesting is that when my windows starts i was able to launch a game and play it with days without any problems! But when i do something else and windows is running and i start a game after 10-15 minutes it shows the BSOD and restarts. I got pissed of and i installed the old drivers (from my CD).Did the procedure (uniinstall old drivers , restart, install new) i installed everything... but the problem was still there... even WORST! I wasnt able to start a game and the different in the Blue Screen was that there was atkosdmini.dll . I dont have any problems with the videos or other things. Only with the games. And how can i run memtest? I installed it and it was some BIN file..I dont think its the memory because i was able to start a game before getting the old drivers back. Its somewhere in the drivers.. i think. Umm.. the first time i had that problem was when i reinstalled ASUS GamerOSD and when i stated record the computer restarted but then i was able to launch the games any time. So, what should i do

A:BSOD during game; can't get past "starting windows" anymore

You are correct in that the dumps are blaming your NVidia gfx drivers for the crash, first step would be to uninstall/reinstall the latest drivers using DDU or driver sweeper to clear out

If it still fails try the same again using an older version, if it still fails try your other gpu

Basically what you are doing/have already done

I have to admit I am in a bit of a jam , the sticky kind. Here's the deal , fresh windows 7 install , updated , tried the motherboard cd NIC card drivers, tried the ones on the motherboard manufacturers site , even tried the latest realtek ones. Every other driver is up to date , the problem is really annoying, whenever a game is started , my internet connection disconnects, sometimes after 2-6 minutes of playing online (starcraft 2 Beta.. never in the menu), in other games as this offline single player (singularity) got it after 10 minutes .
No error message just network cable unplugged , the router is not the problem here as I tried bypassing it and logging straight to my PPOE connection , same problem.
Reinstalled windows and tried again , no luck. Updated bios to the latest , problem persists. The other computers in my house do not do this , but this should be my gaming rig.(in progress)

The system :
Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bit
AMD Phenom II 955 BE @ stock
4 GB DD3 (don't think it matters)
AsRock 890GX Extreme 3
NIC - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller or as ASrock site said Realtek RTL8111E
I should mention that browsing or downloading files of any size or shape does not cause this .
Any help would be really appreciated I'm out of ideas.
Forgot to mention , it's the same if I use another network card. :\

Greetings Win7 Forums,

I want to thank you in advance for the support. I'm about ready to melt my PC and sell it for scrap.

I've been running Windows 7 Pro x64 Final since early October (thanks MSDN). This BSOD has been very consistent. System_service_exception .... 0x3b

It only appears when starting certain (not all) games. They include Halo PC, Dead Space, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, to name a few. Other games, such as Spore, Gears of War, and The Sims 3 run flawlessly.

So I figured since I had a pre-release version I would wait it out to see if a possible driver update would amend this problem. Didn't happen.
I bought a new GFX card because my integrated was crap. Still got the error, so I ruled out it was a problem with the GFX. This is a clean install of Win7 on a brand new hard drive, so rule out any possibilities there. I'm not overclocking as the hardware I'm running now is a x100 upgrade from my previous, so rule that one out too.

I'm left thinking it's the RAM. I won't be sure until after I run memtestx64 overnight and troubleshoot each stick. Just thought maybe some of you seasoned troubleshooters could take a look at my dump file and maybe decipher a problem.

I think it should be noted these games run fine on my XP boot with the same hardware. Only difference is XP is installed on a separate HD. However it is x86 so only 3.5 of the 8GB of RAM are being used, respectively. That is simply not enough for these high-end games.

This is a huge hea... Read more

It started yesterday when I went to play Borderlands with my brother. My computer just shut down after a few minutes in the game. I was playing Civ 5 all night long just the night before and played Borderlands like 2 days ago and I didn't encounter any problems.

Right now, whenever I run a DX9-11 game, it just shutdowns my computer either after a few minutes loading or while loading. (Tried with Borderlands, ANNO2070, Kingdom of Amalur, Civ 5) It does not crash when I only surf on the net or play some flash games (ie. Dofus)

What I did without success:
I did a mem. test (MemTest86+) and found no errors.
I replaced my stock chipset fan with a 60mm one as I thought it was overheating. (bleep Intel mobo is hot)
Ran a stress test on my GPU without any problem.
Updated my DX drivers, VC++ redist
Updated my graphic card drivers
Tried another identical GPU, still crashes.
Ran a stress test on my CPU with Prime95: No problem.

So now I'm out of ideas.

CPU: Intel Pentium D 965 Extreme Edition Processor HH80553PH1094M
Motherboard: EVGA nForce 750i SLI FTW

We uninstalled the patched version , reinstalled Medieval 2 but the game still will not start..same message! Also now NONE of the Total war games we own will start up ( we have them all!!) Can find no answers as to how to fix this problem anywhere else...hope someone can help . .. we are not terribly tech savvy so hopefully if there is a fix it will be something we can understand!! ANY help would be appreciated!!! PS all the games previously worked just fine so the computer is capable of playing them.

First, have you gone and posted this question in the Medieval 2 Offcial boards? Done a "search" through the Medieval 2 forums? You may find answers and suggestions from the other players there in whatever they call their "Unoffcial Tech Help" board.

It might have been a corrupted files down too.

I have recently been getting BSOD and black screens, forcing restarts often on startup of games though they also occur randomly throughout if not on startup. The GPU was no stock in my system, I added it around 2 months after I bought the desktop. There has been a black screen issue since I first installed the GPU although it rarely forced a restart until the last week or so, before this time it also never caused BSOD. The only manual change I have made to my software recently has been an update to the latest beta drivers for my card two days ago, though the problem existed before that as mentioned above. With the aid of a friend I did a clean install of drivers this evening with the intention of ruling out corrupt drivers I believe. All temperatures have been well within the ranges that I'm led to believe are normal. The temperatures as I most often see them are (according to SpeedFan): Temp1 26C, Temp2 31C, CPU 2C, HD 27C, GPU 30C.

I have also collected a WhoCrashed report and have attached it to this post, I hope it is useful. Thank you in advance for any assistance, as you can understand trying to fix this myself with little knowledge has been a little frustrating.

Again, thanks in advance.

Any suggestions as to whether the hard drive could be to blame or mother board? I have 2 DVD drives both have same results.

I purchased my computer two months ago and have been having BSOD problems at times. The BSOD only occurs sometimes and only when starting games, such as Battlefield BC2 and Call of Duty MW2. With Battlefield, the game will start and go to the main screen, but when I click on "Log In", BSOD. With MW2, it will begin to start the game then, BSOD. It doesn't do this all the time, just sometimes. I have Norton installed because it is what comes with my ISP. I did uninstall it, but continued to get the BSOD, although it did seem not as often. Here is my system info.. Thank you in advance for any help.

Whenever i try to start a game after my computer has been on for a little while it blue screens and says that it's collecting for a memory dump. The games run fine if i start them up right after starting my computer. I was thinking the problem might be with my RAM since I didn't go with the most reliable brand, nut im not entirely sure and i don't want to take my computer apart if the RAM might not be the issue.

I bought and have been playing Bioshock (through Steam) at high settings with no problems at all (more than 15 hours racked up in this game with extended 5 hour + gaming sessions no problem).

Bought NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer and COD4 as well a few days ago, and installed both earlier. However, when I try to play them my PC just reboots of its own accord. This happens at about 2-3 minutes into NWN2MOB, and with COD4 it always happens at almost the exact same point during the introductory sequence whilst the main game is loading.

Portal runs okay as well as Bioshock. Given this pattern, I suspected a Securom problem, but I found it happens with Oblivion as well - again after about 2 minutes of game time as with NWN2. (I also tried a no-DVD crack for COD4 to see if that helped, but it didn't make any difference) I also found that the HL2 Lost Coast video stress test causes a reboot as well.

So... how do I diagnose and correct this issue? Why does Bioshock run so well for so long whilst a less taxing game like NWN2 causes a reboot so soon, and COD4 won't even get past the introductory loading sequence?

I am stumped. Usual suspects for me would be:

Have you modified the voltages or timings on the memory? If not, you may want to loosen them up and maybe up the voltage .05 - .1. My first thought if that your PSU may not be powerful enough. I know it is inconvenient, but maybe upgrading to a 650-750 watt might be a good investment for future and present issues. Also, I notice you used an IDE HDD, is that the original drive you formatted windows onto?

The problem started yesterday while I tried to run Counter-Strike Global Offensive by launching it with the ESEA client and got a BSOD.
At first I thought it was a CS:GO related problem as the game is relatively new and there were GPU problems in the past when the game was beta (I have a NVIDIA GTX560M on a Qosmio x775).
Following forums I figured I may have to flash BIOS and update graphics card drivers. However, despite these updates I kept BSOD'ing every time while trying to launch the game.
Taking my research further I realized the computer would crash while starting ANY game. Even opening the NVIDIA client to change 3d settings led to a BSOD. After a lot of frustration and futile updates, I thought perhaps it was an overheating issue and left the laptop off for the night with all USB ports unplugged.

At first, today seemed good since I was able to go through 3d settings in the NVIDIA control panel with no crash. But, while returning to the original game that caused problems (CS:GO), I got a bluescreen again.

I really need to know what is going on as I haven't the faintest clue. I've attached a diagnostic error report of one of the crashes (there have been many) and I am willing to provide any extra information just as long as I get some responses!

Please help me on this and I will shower you with beneficence, goodwill, and many internet points.

For the last month or so I've been plagued with BSOD's on my laptop. Often these will occur initially when I have a game and a video open at the same time but will rapidly occur in quick succession and variety after this. I've had these issues when Windows 8/8.1/7 have been running on clean installs at alternative times as well as both the latest and manufacturer supplied (HP Pavillion DV6 3139-tx laptop) graphics drivers. I've run memory checks and things come up clear here so I'm starting to run out of ideas about what's going on bar hardware failure.

Here's what's going on:

Two months ago (give or take), I built a new computer from scratch. Here are the specs:

Windows XP Pro SP1
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.01 GHz
2.00 GB RAM
250 GB Hard drive
Nvidia Graphics Card: GeForce 8600 GT

I've had The Sims 2 (base game + 8 expansions) installed since I assembled the computer, and it ran beautifully. For Christmas, I got Orange Box and Myst: The Collection. It took a bit of work to get Orange Box running properly-- if I didn't run it in a lower directx setting, it crashed my computer. But I got that issue ironed out and was able to play the game just fine. Then I tried to install Myst Masterpiece Edition, discovered it's not really compatible with Windows XP, and-- after installing and uninstalling Myst and Quicktime several times-- decided to uninstall it and figure out the problem later. Having had problems with all my other games, I decided to load up The Sims 2. It crashed my computer during startup. A BSOD flashes on the screen, but I can't tell what it says before my computer restarts. I checked out Portal in Orange Box, and even with the same tweaked directx launch options, it is now crashing my computer as well.

Sometimes (it's about a 50/50 chance), I get an error message when the computer restarts. It's a Microsoft message saying that the system has recovered from a serious error. I haven't gotten the message the past few times it's crashed, but if it... Read more

PLEASE HELP , after extensive searching I am led to this site to try and sort out my problem

Until recently I have had no problems playing games that I have launched from steam. Only recently have I started to notice that when I launch specific games in my games library the BSOD with the system_service_exception error code 0x0000003b appears, this can be intermittent.

I have installed blue screen view and it seems to indicate that the driver atikmdag.sys and ntoskrnl.exe is causing the issue linked to the ati kernel mode driver and NT kernel and system which are their file names respectively, I have tried reinstalling the new catalyst drivers but this doesnt seem to make any difference. this is as far as I have gone

the minidump is uploded
the age of my system now is approximately 2 and half years - I have also considered updating my motherboard e.g flash bios and update chipset drivers but I do not know if this will make any difference.

Any thoughts or opinions will be greatly appreciated . Thank you

You have to be really careful here. You don't want to cancel any startup programs that you would need. Just be aware. This permanantly stops programs from starting up when you start windows. If you still want some of these to start up, you'll still have to close them manually.

Additionally, if you don't already, run some spyware cleaning programs. They might be contributing.

Hello, I have a Y50-70. Product link: When I start some games using the NVIDIA chipset, I get a black window (in windowed mode) or a black screen (in full screen mode). Sound plays and I hear the "mouseover" sound when I move the cursor over parts of the black screen. If I start it using the "Integrated graphics", it runs HORRIBLY but I can at least see the game. I've tried upgrading/downgrading the driver. This seems to have no impact on the black window. I've seen perhaps 5 dozen complaints on the web regarding this problem. Has anyone managed to solve it?

Greetings techsupportguy,

This is a clean install of Windows 7 on a brand new hard drive, so rule out any possibilities there.

That is simply not enough for t... Read more

A:BSOD 0x0000003B when starting certain games on Win7x64

Good evening.

After updating the outdated drivers, I was still getting BSOD 0x3B. I realized it wasn't a bad driver and decided the best route was to test the hardware.

I replaced the RAM sticks and video with known working pieces and the BSOD still appeared. After some thought, I decided to disable all startup items and non-microsoft services. Sure enough, BSOD gone. Turns out it was my firewall, Outpost Firewall Pro 2009, causing the System Service Exception. I've been using their firewall on 32bit for years now without a problem, but apparently their x64 for Win 7 still has some bugs.

I'm just glad this issue is resolved and I can play my games again with the full support of my x64 and Direct X 11.

Hey there. I've heard you guys have a lot of technical expertise in this stuff. I hope someone can give me advice to kill this crazy problem of mine. I think I have the same problem as the post by pentagr titled "radeon 9800 pro" or something around those lines in the A/V section of the forums.

My computer will shut down everytime I turn on a game, like Rome Total War or even Gunbound. Shut down occurs whenever I turn on the visual plugins that you can use with Winamp like AVS. It isn't instantaneous, but takes a few minutes to shut down. It even sometimes randomly shuts down when I'm just browsing through the web. When it shuts down the power light is still on, but everything else is off (eg. all fans turn off & hard drive turns off).

The problem just started out of nowhere. I did not install any programs, did not screw around with settings that I didn't understand, did not alter any configurations and did not change any parts. One day my computer just shut down and from then on anytime I accessed anything "graphically intense" it would just shut down.

I updated my radeon drivers, still had the same problem and then rollbacked the drivers and still had the same problem. I reformatted. Still had the same problem (so therefore it is a hardware problem). I have two sticks of ram and tried out each of them seperately if the shut down still occured. It still shut down. I swapped my current 350w power supply with another 350w I... Read more

Have you tried the natest nVidia motherboard drivers? Although I don't recall problems with any of the nForce drivers that would cause that. I have heard people complain that ATI cards don't play well in nVidia motherboards but I know lots of people who run the mix with no problems.

have you tried with the side of the case off and a room fan blowing into the box to rule out heat? Blown all the dust out of your heatsink? Could your CPU, RAM or AGP voltages be too low? Could your RAM timings be too tight? Things change with age and what used to work may be just marginal with age and heat.

that's about all I can think of.

Or to be precise, some games won't start or crash.
Some background. I used to have 2 9600GT cards in Sli. Each one was 1GB in size. I replaced them with one 896MB GTX 260. I have since found that some of my games do not start or crash to desktop whilst others are fine.
I can run Crysis Warhead, Farcry 2, Empire Total War and a few other games like Rise of Legends and UFO Afterlight. The games I can not run are Red Alert 3, Fallout 3, Saints Row 2, Fear 2 and Dawn of War II. I have a few other games I've not tried yet which may or may not work.
I have the newest driver (185.85) and have even used older drivers but I have the same problem. But I think I know what the problem is.
When I start up Dawn of War II I see the menu but where I should see the game running (I should see my character and the environment) I see in huge blurred letters 'out of vid memory'.
Now I know I have taken a cut in my overall memory from a max of 2GB to a 'mere' 896 but none of these games require that much memory. A GTX 260 with 896MB should be enough, should'nt it? So, why the error? Oh and just to note all these games have been played using my Sli 9600's before I swapped to the GTX 260.
I have a DXdiag too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. Tried STALKER: Clear Sky and while the game runs the screen is black, as if there are no graphics displayed. The HUD is visible but nothing else. It's bizarre.

This all started a month or two ago when I was suddenly having hard locks during the first 2-10 minutes of playing Overwatch. Turns out it wasn't just Overwatch as it also happened a lot in Watch Dogs too. There was no consistency between lock ups. I could be playing for an hour earlier in the day, leave my computer on for awhile, start it back up later and it crashes then. After a restart, it would sometimes crash a second time.

I thought it was a software issue so I reinstalled. This seemed to fix that issue, but I did get another hard lock after about an hour of Watch Dogs. After the reset, I noticed my Audio Service stopped shortly after getting into windows. Thinking it was linked, I downgraded to an older more reliable version of my Logitech G930 drivers. That seemed to fix the audio issue.

The next day is when I ended up getting this BSOD. I think it's all linked to my CPU since it's old as dirt and up until about 6 months ago, I had a motherboard that would kill video cards by either giving too much voltage or too little. Wouldn't doubt that it might have done damage to the CPU.

If you can shed some light on what my problem is, thanks in advanced.

I recently upgraded my computer with a new power-supply and a new tower in order for more ventilation and to better support my graphics card with power. However, after doing this, I not only lost sound capabilities, but also lost the ability to play any games. I fixed the lack of sound by simply buying a cheap sound card. Whenever I start up a game, it'll run fine for about 5-30 seconds, but then the screen will freeze and everything pixelates into mostly green. The computer usually restarts itself at this time, but if it doesn't, then I've just been doing a hard shut-down. I've tried quite a few things, from wiping the hard-drive and completely reinstalling every driver and getting all the updates I can, to scanning my computer for viruses and the like, but haven't been able to find an answer. Everyone I've talked to about it has no clue whats going on. All other functions work fine, such as internet videos, etc.

I just bought an 850 watt power-supply, and my graphics card is an nvidia 9800 GT graphics card. The only problem I had before I upgraded was insufficient power, as with more advanced games (dragon-age origins) my computer would shut itself down after about 30-60 minutes, but would run all other games fine. Now however, it won't even run games like Warcraft 3 or Counter-Strike Source. I'm a little lost, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

since a few days I experience BSOD while playing/starting Steam games (noticed it the first while playing Payday 2, tried Space Engineers later and it happened there too).

This only happens while playing or starting Steam games, I played WoW for hours now without any problems but as soon as I try to play a Steam game I get a BSOD. Also my games now got black borders which I was able to fix for Payday but it's still strange that they appeared at the same time as the BSOD.

My Specs:

CPU: Intel i2500k

GPU: Asus HD Radeon 7950 (AMD Graphic card)

Mainboard: Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen 3

Power Supply: be quiet! Straight Power E9-CM 480W ATX 2.4

RAM: TeamGroup Elite Series DIMM Kit 8GB, DDR3-1333

Please let me know if I forgot any specific logs/specs or any other information you need to help me.

It seems like I found the problem, noticed heat spikes for my GPU and CPU, increased my cooling and so far it works fine.

Greetings everyone! Long time reader, first time poster,

This is a clean install of Windows 7 on a brand new hard drive, so rule out any possibilities there.

That is simply not enough f... Read more

A:[SOLVED] BSOD 0x0000003B when starting certain games on Win7x64

Interestingly, the debugger cannot identify the symbols for your version of win32k.sys.
Can you think of any reason for this?

If not, then I'd suggest running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt. Please let us know the results of this when it's done.

Please update the Asus programs on your system to the latest Win7 version. The ASIO.sys file on your system dates from 2007.

Other than that there's little evidence of the culprit involved here. I hope that the SFC.EXE thing will fix it enough that we'll be able to start tracking the culprit with the next memory dump file. It's important for us (in this sort of situation) to have all of the minidump files in the C:\Windows\Minidump directory. That will help us to see if there's a pattern to the crashes - and the pattern may lead to the culprit.

Here's the memory dump analysis:

Hi I just created an account here and needed some help with a problem. Just built this new PC for a friend and after everything going fine whenever i start any newer game like crysis, oblivion, and WoW i get purple squiggly lines on my monitor and then i lose connection to the monitor and i get a hardware lockup and have to manually turn off the computer. During the lock-up the mouse, keyboard and i believe everything just goes to sleep or turns off. I have run 3D Mark and got a benchmark around 10000 for graphics and 30000 for cpu. Also updated and reinstalled all drivers multiple times for my graphics card and updated directX and reinstalled. Also reinstalled the games and tried that but this problem keeps persisting. Ran GPUZ and the graphics looked like it was running smoothly. Any help would be very much appreciated thanks so much!

My knowledge when it comes to hardware/software is very limited, ill attach my minidump file.

A:BSOD While starting games and updating video card driver

Stop 0x124 is a hardware error

If you are overclocking try resetting your processor to standard settings and see if that helps.

If you continue to get BSOD here are some more things you may want to consider.

This is usually heat related, defective hardware, memory or even processor though it is"possible" that it is driver related (rare).

Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress.
Generic "Stop 0x124" Troubleshooting Strategy:

1) Ensure that none of the hardware components are overclocked. Hardware that is driven beyond its design specifications - by overclocking - can malfunction in unpredictable ways.
2) Ensure that the machine is adequately cooled.
If there is any doubt, open up the side of the PC case (be mindful of any relevant warranty conditions!) and point a mains fan squarely at the motherboard. That will rule out most (lack of) cooling issues.
3) Update all hardware-related drivers: video, sound, RAID (if any), NIC... anything that interacts with a piece of hardware.
It is good practice to run the latest drivers anyway.
4) Update the motherboard BIOS according to the manufacturer's instruct... Read more

Hi all.

This is my very first post on these forums. I have tried searching for a solution to my problem, and persistent 'googling' led me to this site.

Here is my issue...

From the 27/07/10, I have mysteriously started getting this 'SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION' BSOD whenever I attempt to start a game from the Steam UI. It doesn't occur every single time, and not with every game. It is entirely random at that point, but it does happen only when I attempt to launch a game from the UI. Most times, I can reboot and restart the same game from Steam again, and it runs fine.

I used a small app called 'Bluescreenview' and it identified a driver file: win32k.sys, and ntoskrnl.exe as the culprits. Beyond this however, I cannot identify what app or process is causing the BSOD.

System specs are as follows:

CPU:Intel Core i7 920
MB: MSI X58-Pro
RAM: 3 x 2GB Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600
GPU: 2 x [Sapphire] ATI Radeon 5850 (CrossfireX)
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro M 1000W

Windows 7 info:

- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? x64
- the original installed OS on the system? yes...installed from scratch, not an upgrade
- an OEM or full retail version? full retail
- OEM = came pre-installed on system no
- Full Retail = you purchased it from retailer yes

- What is the age of system (hardware)? GPUs and PSU, six months, all other components, 18 months.

I also did this in which I changed the TdrDelay to 8. I had the latest graphic driver, but I went back a version of the driver to see if that solved anything, but it didnt. My graphics card is nVidia GeForce GTX 675M. Attached is a couple of my blue screen reports. Any help is appreciated!

Today i started playing DoW Dark Crusade and Company of Heroes, and i had no issues with my computer what so ever. Then i was wondering if Steam was still screwed up, so i started CoH through Steam and while playing my cpu usage will lag to 100% for 3-5 seconds. So i reinstalled Steam thinking it would solve the problem, but to no avail. I think it might be related to my 20 hour DoW 2 Beta download 2 weeks ago. What's weird is that lag only happens in the games after I have opened them through steam.

Are there any Steam problems that could be related?
This is not a cooling or internet problem.

My OS is XP service pack 3.

Plz help.

A:After starting games trough steam, game lags every minute or so.

if you have just re-installed steam it may be trying to update steam and any games that you are running from steam, make sure everything is completely up to date and try again. Had a similar problem once which was due to my wireless adapter, game would lag every 30 seconds or so when connecting using windows wireless software but was fine when i set up my wireless using the belkin wireless utility - maybe worth a try

Hello, everyone. I just got back to my PC after a my first year of college, and when I first started it up it bluescreened. I didn't manage to catch the error before it rebooted, then changed to a black screen said that there was no hard disk to boot with.
So I turned it off, turned it back on, and it booted just fine. I ran a full system scan with Avast to check for malware, updated some games on Steam, and basically did my best to get my computer up to speed since it had been off for so long (while I did use it during long breaks). While the Avast scan was running I played World of Warcraft for about an hour or two, and bam--another bluescreen. The error message said something along the lines of "Display drivers failed to restart," but again I couldn't catch the rest because it rebooted, coming up with the same black screen as before. So I turned it off.
When I booted it up for a third time Avast opened almost immediately and asked to restart my computer and run a scan of the startup files. So I obliged; it seemed like it scanned my whole system again, which lasted for an hour or two, and it seems like it moved Malwaregen and corrupted files to the chest. When it was done my computer booted normally. I installed some Windows updates and a new Nvidia driver, figuring that something was outdated, and once again started playing World of Warcraft. This time it didn't bluescreen; instead, the screen froze after ten minutes and turned a solid color. My PC rebooted almos... Read more

Hi everyone,A few days ago, I suddenly couldn't update AVG anymore. It always gives me an error, telling me the connection with the server failed. I also noticed that I can't connect Limewire (P2P program) anymore and opening movie streams in Windows Media Player doesn't work anymore either.I searched some forums for a solution and I found someone with a similar problem, who also told he couldn't execute the "cmd" and "regedit" commands anymore. It seems to me that we are having BSoD errors here. First I would like you to start up in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key. Then use the arrow keys to choose Safe Mode and then Choose your OS. Boot up into your computer and click Start. Right click My Computer and hit Properties. Then in System Properties click the Advanced Tab. Under Startup and Recovery click Settings. A lot of adware was downloaded to my wife's laptop, and I was trying to remove it.
The problems included Strongvault, some adware (coupons in several flavors) and a registry cleaner.
After ahving successfully uninstalled several programs, and cleaned up the adware, there were still remnants of Strongvault.  Whenever the Laptop started, it would attempt to install something, and the event viewer pointed to Strongvault.
I first ran Malwarebytes' AntiMalware software wich found some things I had not seen earlier, but the install rpoblem persisted.
I then ran "Hitman Pro" and after that the problems started.
If I start Windows normally, it stops and asks me to run Startup Repair or Start windows normally.
Startup Repair truies to restore to the last good image, but the system restore fails.
I tried to start up in safe mode which works.
When going into the startup options, I can also start windows normally, and it starts up, but not with the usual settings, such as the see-through task bar etc, but things appear to work.
When the normal start fails, there are nothing in the event viewer to clue me into what the problem would be.
Does anybody have any suggestion as to what I can try to get some traces to see where things go wrong?

A:Not starting normally, but starting from startup options menu using normal start

Have you looked at msconfig?
Click start and type in msconfig and press enter.  Under the Services tab click the "hide all microsoft services" check box at the bottom and you can safely turn everything off, and then under the Startup tab you can turn everything there off.  This will at least boot cleanly and you can see how things go.
Understand some of these services and startup programs may be something you use all the time, so if there's something missing that you need starting up with the system go back through the services and startup sections and look for the one you want.  The biggest problem I usually see with people that are new to using msconfig are printer / scanner / digital camera related (Lexmark is usually indicated with an lx... listing, and hp digital imgaing for auto starting your camera / scanner software)
Just another road to explore if you haven't already.

You did do "startup repair"? Did you click "view diagnostics details" (or something similar)? It displays the tests it did and the results. I'm not interested in status 0x0 status. What tests had status other than 0x0?

Did you try "system restore" to a date/rime priot to having problems?

I have a Dell XPS 8300 64 bit Windows 7
My HDD recently failed, so I ordered a new one and did a full restore off of my NTI backup drive. I started the computer up with both HHD's hooked up, so that I could transfer whatever filed hadn't backed up from the old to the new. I then discovered that because I did so, the old HDD was still labeled C and the new was now labeled D. This caused the blue screen of "this copy of windows is not genuine" issue when only the new HDD was hooked up.
I researched for days. If both HDD's were hooked up, the computer would boot from the old one, even if I selected the new one from the boot menu.
I downloaded Paragon HFS and installed that onto a flash drive. I booted from the flash drive and selected boot correcter. I switched the drive letters of the two HDD's and ran the other boot correctors as well. I shutdown and removed the old HDD and started up.
Seemingly I was able to boot off the new HDD, but now explorer.exe was not starting. It was just a black screen after logon. So I ctrl+alt+delete to bring up talk manager and ran explorer.exe and there it was. The other issue is that NONE of the standard startup programs are starting. My computer is essentially starting as if it is in safe mode. Just the bare minimum.
I put in my windows reinstallation disk and booted from it and ran the repair and it did its thing. Nothing changed.
I go into msconfig and all the normal programs that I had before are on ... Read more

This problem has occurred "somewhat"(I don't know when exactly) recently. I used to be able to play full screen games just fine but now (for some reason), everytime I launch a full screen game, it auto minimizes.

When I alt+tab back(or click the game icon on the task bar), it remaximizes the game but quickly gets minimized after a second.

Games play fine while in "windowed" mode(Warcraft 3, etc).. Full screen keeps minimizing.

I use Windows Vista Ultimate (64 bit):

Nvidia GeForce 8300(onboard video card).
I've done scans with Avast, Malware Bytes, and Super Antispyware and they all found nothing.

Three months ago(same system), full screen games played fine however I was on sort of a "full screen" gaming break, so I only recently tried playing full screen games like Warcraft 3 and this is when I encountered the "auto minimizes" problem.

The only major difference(between the time full screen games worked and now) is Avast 5. I upgraded from Avast 4.8 to Avast 5, other than that, there were no other major changes with the computer I am on.

Avast 5 is on Silent/Gaming mode, and I tried disabling all the shields temporarily to see if it would fix the issue but it didn't.

Does anyone have any ideas(or need anymore info that may help)? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

I have a third party program that lets me add my own custom entries so obviously I'd like to add them manually so I have more control over fine details. I know that the automatically-created entries can be hidden after the fact, but that really clutters up the third party editor since it displays all games in its list, hidden or otherwise. Any thoughts?
