A: Can't run older games anymore

When you say older games don't work does that mean they did work on that PC before or not?

At work I have a PC w/an Athlon XP 1700 chip, 256 meg of ram, and a Radeon AGP w/64 meg memory video card runing Win XP Pro. So my gaming choices are somewhat limited. I've already played Quake 2 and Half-Life (and Opposing Force & Blue Shift). I like playing the FPS style games (single-player mode). So I'm wondering:

Is Counter-Strike single player or only multi-player? Is it free if I own Half-Life?

Is there a site that would list FPS games by release date year to year? Since I know Half-Life was released around 98, I could look for other games released around then that would probably run ok on my system.

Any suggestions for good FPS games that would run on my system would be appreciated. I'm looking into some of the Star-Wars games, also Halo, and Unreal seem to have good reps and might run ok.

Thanks much,
Harold

Not really a gaming type problem but wanted to know if anyone knows if games like Deus Ex, Quake II, Quake III, All Half-Life games and add ons, System Shock II and some other games along those lines will work under WIndows XP.
A few others I question are the Pro Pinball Series from Empire Interactive ( Timeshock, The Web, Fantastic Journey.
From what I have seen of XP looks good but then if any of these can't be played under XP, is there a way to correct this?
Thanks for any help on this question.

So far the only issues I've run into as far as older games(though I have more to re-install after my mobo/cpu/gpu upgrades) are games labelled "Games for windows" for which I've followed oodles of guides and all were epic fails. Specifically, I'm trying to install fallout 3 and expansions, all with that "Games for windows" label or platform on them and none run no matter what compatibility or troubleshooting I try. To top it all off, all those solutions always have some error after each step I take until I run into a brick wall and the solutions run out without a fix. The windows 8.1 site specifically has that game as NOT being compatible with 8.1 which is stupid and unless Bethesda(all they do is refer you to the same useless links as all other sites) or windows(snicker)supplies players with some kind of patch to make it compatible, that and other games will never work. Hell I even got old Morrowind to work(so far) and that's even older than fallout 3.
Anything else using drm managers(for lack of a better term) like Origin/battle.net/steam/beamdog run old games just fine. I was told to go out and buy a fallout 3 GOTY edition as IT apparently runs on win 8.1 so as usual, the clients/gamers have to fork over money for upgrades since some game companies and Microsoft are too damned lazy to write a small patch to make these games compatible without jumping through useless hoops. Vent over. good luck.

A:Older Games non running on win 8.1

Hey, Ive had many BS problems like this before.

I can still run Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on my Windows 8.1 laptop without any issues. But other games such as you mentioned will need to run in compatibility mode running in Administrator mode. i see you have tried it and it has caused further issues, Then again Games for windows is no longer supported (it was a microsoft version of steam) Its weird how vista has not worked as that was the main OS for Games for windows.

I really dont know how to solve this, Guess im bumping this thread. Try talking to Microsoft on they're forums as they have licensed the game, so they should know about it. Thanks!

Okay. Here it goes.

I recently wanted to install "Blood" for XP. And, the website says it is for Windows XP. It also says its freeware.

Ok, so I go to start:run: then type SETUP
I navigate to the SETUP file in the Blood folder.
It seems good, and I press "save and run"
an error message pops up saying...

BLOOD is a MS-DOS game. You need DosBox or some other virtual machine running MS-DOS to install/run it.

I will probably buy it anyway as I really want to check it out...

I have Win7, and play a lot of XP era games. I've been encountering difficulties, and thought it might be easier to use XP x64. I found it for $26 AUD brand new on ebay. I'm happy to try it out if it means better stability in games.

I already have a Win7/10 dual boot anyway, so I'm happy to add another. I basically just wanted to ask if this is likely to help with my problems (listed below) and if buying x64 (rather than installing the x86 version I already own) is worth it.

Issues:
Fallout 3 crash on start (fixed via workaround)
Fallout 3 random freezes
Quake colours glitching out
Star Wars Battlefront II crash on start
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 some issue I don't remember
Doom95 mouse hack not working

Specs:
MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard (XP64 drivers are available as far as I know, the SATA drivers definately are)
AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
16 GB RAM OC 2133 MHz
GeForce GTX 950 (XP64 drivers are available)

Thanks.

A:Is XP x64 worth it for older games?

64 bit XP was widely regarded as being less satisfactory for games, as it isn't directly Windows XP, it's built on the Server 2003 kernel with equivalent XP client features provided. It didn't become widely supported by device manufacturers before the better regarded Vista 64 took over, although drivers may not be a problem in your circumstances. Also older games may have a 16 bit installer, which will not run on the 64 bit OS to allow you to install and set up the game. But it sounds like it isn't going to cost much to try.

Hi I have 2 games made by Microsoft; Age Of Empires Gold, and Age Of Empires II + Conquerors expansion. I also have a star Wars version of these games called Galactic Battle Grounds.

My problem with these games are all the same. I start the game, (not all of them at the same time) the starting videos all work fine, then the game stops responding. All 3 of these games have the same exact problem. These games stop responding after the last video plays, when the game menu is supposed to be loaded. I have played all these games just fine on this very same computer for 2 years. I didn't have this problem with these games until I installed Internet Explorer 7.

I'm wondering if anyone else with these games are having that problem. I'm 100% sure it's IE7 causing it, as all the above mentioned games can be played online.
I have no problems with any of my other games I play. Although I haven't installed or played some of my other older games in over a year.

Thanks

I've been happy with my dual pIII-800 for a while now, but it's showing signs that it will die soon. I figure it's getting close to the time to buy a new computer. Now I'd like to get Vista64, since the biggest computer sellers these days have good deals on 6GB and 8GB systems, but I'm not sure how my old games will run on Vista, let alone Vista64. I'd probably be using a pre-built machine from Dell or HP, because I don't feel like building my own, and the prices aren't very different.

What have people's experiences been with games from 10-15 years ago? How about these games in particular?

- Simcity 4
- Wizardry 8
- Morrowind
- Baldur's Gate II
- Starcraft
- Diablo
- Diablo II
- Various Space Quest and King's Quest games

If the games won't work on Vista64, will they work on a Win95 emulator in Vista, or will I have to dual-boot?

A:Older games on Vista64

The games *might* work if you can install them. However, the trick is to try and get them installed as 16bit installers definitely wont work on a 64 bit platform.

You never know someone might have patched them.

Is there a way to make games such as Myst, Riven, Duke Nukem, Zork Nemisis, etc play on this operating system? If not, off to EBAY they go. Thanks.

A:Older games on WIN XP Home

Yup, it might well be possible. Install the game as usual (assuming you can), then navigate to the folder it installed to, find the main .exe file for the game, then right click it, and select properties. Once that is open, select the compatibility tab, and tell it to run under whatever O/S you wish (for DN, prolly win2k).

Hope that helps,

Hi All, good to be here. I have two pcs - an older Compaq CQ5123f which is a Vista machine with a Windows 7 upgrade, and a new Compaq CQ5720f with Windows 7. Both machines are Home Premium 64 bit. I have several games and older programs in the old PC that ran well in the older machine (they were bought before Windows 7 came out) but will not run in the new PC, and if I were to buy and install a Windows Pro upgrade DVD from a local retailer, would these games and other programs on the old machine work in the "XP Mode" that is part of the Pro version?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

A:Older Games and Programs

A free solution may be DoxBox or VirtualBox. You can get help in the Virtualization forum if you get stuck setting them up. Also if you have a copy of XP not being used you could most likely partition the drive and install it on the older PC.

Have you tried installing using compatibility mode? That would be the first thing to try. If the old programs are 16 bit apps they won't run on native 64 bit system. In that case I'd try DoxBox.

Those on this forum would know more:

Try changing the compatibility mode to win98.....

Right click the .exe file in the directory in which you installed the game, and choose properties. Then click the compatibility tab, tick the 'always execute this program in this compatibility mode' tickbox and choose win98.....

Hope it helps!

This is why some people say compatibility doesn’t work for the older games “if the game makes a direct call to the Hardware then the compatibility won't help since it's not going through the OS. The Windows bible says that you're not supposed to make direct calls to the hardware but that didn't stop a lot of game programmers doing it to get a little more efficiency out of the slower hardware of the time. These days with DirectX and power to spare it isn't an issue but those old games require those calls and sadly, XP makes it impossible. After all if you can directly call the PCs hardware, bypassing the OS entirely, then all the OS's security features go out of the window” IS THERE ANYWAY AROUND THIS!!!!

A:compatibility on xp and older games

For DOS games, use DOSBOX from http:\\dosbox.sourcefourge.net

I don't know how better it is now, before it had a strong perentage of games working.

Windows 95 - Hit and miss really. If you cannot run the setup or program after running the compatibility mode then you cannot run it.

I've just done a clean installation of Windows 8, and have been re-installing my games. I've read a few comments about older games not working under Windows 8, specifically <DX9 and openGL games. This is by no means a comprehensive list, obviously, but all these games will work on Windows 8 without issues. i'll be testing more of my games over the next few weeks, and will add to this thread with those older games which work (or not).

The big thing ssems to be...have the most up-to-date drivers installed. I had horror-story after horror-story on the CP because the openGL driver support wasn't there.

And DO use the compatibility mode. it's not as good as in Windows 7, but is adequate.

These three games are Undying, Alice, and No one lives forever 1. They all seem to be closely related when they launch. I wonder what the deal could be... maybe I am missing something minor. I have the latest drivers for my vid card, and latest directx.

I am specifically having problems with Age of Empires II and Populous 3: The Beginning. For those familiar with AoE II; when I click the multiplayer icon in the main menu, nothing appears in the list under "Connection type". So essentially, I can't play multiplayer at all.

As for Pop3, when I start the game (click desktop shortcut or the .exe), it goes directly to the multiplayer screen (where the host selects settings for the game). If I click "Back", the game exits. So here, I am unable of playing in singleplayer too!

Frankly I don't think these are game-specific problems. Something must be conflicting, either a setting or in the registry. I have no idea what the problem is though, but I posted it here since it's game related. I might try posting it in the networking section too.

I might have some luck reinstalling everything that has to do with connecting to other computers, but I need more info on how to do that. I've reset the registry keys for Winsock and Winsock2 already, which didn't work.

I have recently acquired a couple of old games: the PC version of Mega Man X3 and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Create-a-Movie (all the way back from 1995!). Both seem to work fine, except for when video clips have to play. It just skips them and continues as if they didn't exist. Is it because they're old (they were meant for Windows '95)? Is there anything I can do about it? I thought maybe I didn't have the right codec, so I downloaded the entire K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, but still nothing.

I have a question concerning older games and display resolutions of those games. I have a game from 1996 that was a Windows 95 game, built to run in 640x480 with 256 colors only.

I installed this game on my Windows XP system, set compatibility mode to Windows 98, 640x480 etc. and the game runs, but displays in a smaller "box" in the middle of the screen. I figured my system must just be too new, and my LCD monitor doesn't help.

So, I got out an older Windows 2000 system, complete with CRT monitor, and installed it there. But, to my surprise, no matter what resolution I use on even that system, even setting the CRT to the 640x480 res. that the game wants, it still runs in a smaller than full screen box, with black edges around it.

Is Windows XP/2000 the problem? Does it not correctly handle scaling lower resolution programs to a full screen image? Would installing the game on a Windows 98 system fix this?

Hi ctolley,
What happens if you put the disk in the drive, restart the computer, then go to Start > My Computer and go to the CD/DVD Drive? Maybe then you can right click on the CD/DVD drive and choose "autoplay". Or double click the drive and run setup.exe or install.exe.

I have recently bought Command & Conquer : First Decade. C&C Red Alert was one of my favourite games on an older PC. The game was originally designed for Win95/Win98 but under the "First Decade" umbrella all games are compatible with Windows XP.

On my PC the game works in full screen but on my laptop there is a large wide gap on all sides of the screen. I have tried changing screen resolutions within my display properties and within the Intel Graphics properties but although the screen size changes for my desktop the game screen doesn't change from about half size.

I have updated my graphics driver and the problem still remains. I noticed on another thread that a solution was found(with a NVIDIA graphics card) by ...."use display adapter scaling" instead of "use center output". I don't have such a setting on my Intel card.

The forum link is http://forums.techguy.org/games/250985-computer-game-half-screen-mode.html

My computer details are as follows and I have attached a DXDiag.

Intel Celeron CPU 2.20 GHz

Windows XP Home

Hi there.

I have this issue where Windows 7 is forcing a low resolution on those two older games I am trying to run.

The resolution stays at 640x480 no matter if I change it in game or by a hi res patch. I run it with compatibility and without (640x480 is un-ticked in compatibility tab).

I am not looking for stretching the aspect ratio to match a wide screen with 640x480, but to be able to change the resolution (even to 800x600).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Just to add that even after patching or changing the res in game to a different one the resolution persists on 640x480, ignoring what the game setting is currently set to- game shows its running at higher res but its not)

The only issue I may have, is that I have AnyDVD/Clone DVD Mobile on this pc too. I have read online that some copy protection on software doesn't like to find these programs on the pc. I don't leave either of those programs running, so they shouldn't be an issue should they?

Greetings! I enjoy an odd variety of games ranging from different years. Issue being that some games where not programmed for todays operating systems. I recently updated one of my Towers to windows 10 and have no issues with current software but older software has issues. Specifically some games. Currently ive acquired a new system thats running windows 7 Pro (i dont want to loose the license by upgrading to 10). Anyways its a peppy little machine so horsepower for these games is not an issue: its a Dell Percision T5400 that has 2 Xeon E5450 CPU's, currently only 4GB of FB-Dimm DDR2 RAm, a AMD HD 5770 1GB and for hard drives 80GB boot plus 160Gb slave. The games im trying to run are GTA VC, London Racers: destruction madness, NFS underground, and 18 WHeels of steel american long haul. The issues im having for the most part is white boxes appearing on menu bars and pause menu's while in the game. A different issue in GTA vice city where the mouse doesnt respond and the colours are stuck at 16bit and resolution at minimum without the option of changing them. ANy suggestions? im about to try XP mode in comparability options.

A:Videos from older games won't play on XP? Any help?

Dude, I would count yourself lucky that they play at all. You can try right clicking on the executable file of the game and click on the compatibility icon tab then select run for compatibility of 95. It rarely works but has saved me before. If that fails there are some programs that will emulate older pc versions to let you play those types of games but I can't think of names off the top of my head. Just search the net

P.S forget about codec packs they are not your problem

is there anything i can do about this to continue playing the old games i love on my new laptop?

A:windows 8 not compatible wth older games?

I doubt your OS is 64bit
I have win 8.1 64bit and its incompatible with old games , as well as win 7 64bit
I played every game on 8.1 32bit when I was having it as Recoil 1998
you can get them work on 32bit windows but 64bit is incompatible ( especially giving Video adapter error) , Good luk

I have a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570. Strange thing is I can play Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 on all graphical settings on high, but older games like the Witcher or Crysis ( i know its still graphically intensive but still...) have MAJOR framerate issues.

According to the site, "can you run it?" I should be able to play Crysis perfectly, it has the maximum score. I know this might not be wholly accurate, but I'm confounded that a less graphically intensive game like the Witcher would lag even more.

I'm a complete newb to the world of graphics cards, so forgive me for asking such stupid questions, but how do i even find out if my drivers are up to date. I've downloaded 3 different driver support programs and they all give varying responses to what is up to date and what is not.

I downloaded a driver suite from ATI, but there was nothing that specifically had the 4570 on it, and the driver model for my graphics card is still not up to date according to many driver programs as apparently a 2010 version came out last month, but mine is still from middle of 2009.

Also, going from high to the lowest settings do absolutely nothing. The game looks crappier, but lags just as much.

hell i don't know even know if my card is PCI or AGP.

HI,
ok first of all the 8800gts 640mb is better than your card, and that 2.2gbs of graphics memory your seeing is shared memory. Also on srtest a 9100se intergrated card with 1gb of memory even passes the 8800gts 640mb requirement, they just go by model number. Anyway even i have problems running the witcher its not exacltly "bug free" and your running windows 7? that could also be causing some problems with older games, as for crysis your card should get 26 fps on medium quality settings with resolution of 1024x768. So it could be drivers or incompatablility, oh one other thing did you get all the patches for crysis? all the way from 1.1 to 1.21? (maybe try doing the same for the witcher).
Also latest drivers for your card : http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

Hope this helps.

Is there any way to get any of the older dos games like Duke3D to run on Windows XP? I've been able to get some games to run somewhat but not all the way. I know that there is only a DOS shell instead of a real DOS platform but there should be some way of getting it to work. The main thing that I'm having trouble with is getting the sound and music to work on the games. The sound will somewhat work but the music won't at all. Is there any hope at all or is it just a lost cause???? Thanks for your time.

I've been trying to play some of my older games recently. But when i click install in a menu or hunt down the program and run it from the CD either it will load to 100% and then vanish or it will do seemingly nothing at all. Either way it leaves the setup in my windows task manager like it's laughing me . I'm running vista and I've been searching all over the internet for anything but it seems most people can install a game they just may not be able to run it. I'm uninstalling a newer game to see if i have the same problem with it I figure i got it on once if I can't now that puts up a few red flags. I'll edit in my findings on that shortly hopefully though someone will look at this and know what's wrong. Sorry for this but i have no error reports of any sort it's like it runs but it's just messing with me.

Edit 1: when i say older games i mean like thief and other 1990 games

Edit 2: I was able to get Rome total war setup to load and install properly. So far games 2000 and older won't install.

Edit 3: Sadly these aren't dos games but I've found people with vista have installed and run them with only a few minor changes after install. I found one person who had my same issue but he didn't fix it he just reset his comp and it worked after that. Though he may have shut it off entirely so I'll try and see if it works.

Hello again and Happy Holidays! I installed a new hard drive a few days ago and am slowly putting programs back on that I used before. My old system was having some hard drive seek errors so I figured a fresh install would work. With most of the system back in the order I wanted, I've installed a number of games as well. Some of the games are working fine, but others are running very poorly despite their age. I installed Blood 2 the other night and in a normal-sized level it runs fine for a few minutes and then gets very choppy. I can fix it for the moment by switching the renderer from Direct 3D to software and then back again, but it only solves the issue for a few minutes again. My system is a bit old, but it's definitely fast enough to play this with all of the whistles and bells. I currently staged it down to low settings at 800 X 600 and the problems aren't going away. This problem extends to other games as well, but this old one is the worst offender at the moment. My Hijack This follows...

Sorry if this doesn't really belong in this category, but I already posted this under "Games" and haven't gotten any responses so far. I'm looking for someone who has had success playing older games using Win7, specifically Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. A friend recently reccommended it to me and I'm very interested in playing it. I ran a check on my computer and I have all the right specifications -- the only potential problem is that the game was released before Win7 existed. I've tried to do some research to see if it will even work, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer anywhere. I've heard that the game works on Vista, and if it works on Vista it will sometimes work on Win7. Is there any way to definitely know one way or the other, or is it kinda a case-by-case thing? Can someone shed some light on this situation? Has anyone had success with this game in Win7? Are there patches I could get that would make it work? I'd really like to play it but I don't want to spend the time and money if it's not going to work.

my last video card was a geforce fx5200, so im kind of old school. Im running at 2.4ghz, 1gig of ram.. pretty sure the agp slots are 4x. It works fine with rome, medieval and mafia, but tiger woods 2003 doesnt even start up, battlefield 1942 and links 2003's graphics are worse than the on board cards were (all grainy/pixalated). I just bought it on ebay with no software or anything.. so i dl'd trey tools and tried to tweak the overclock but couldnt find any improvement. Also re-installed directx 9. and rebooted a bunch of times.

my fx5200 worked great with links and tiger woods so is this a driver problem? this is pissing me off so id appreciate any help.

thanks

A:9800 pro, not improving graphics on older games?

i also owned a 5200 myself (upgraded to a 6200 for pixel shader 3.0 support). most likely the reason you arent noticing a difference is the agp slot being the bottleneck. the 5200 in my experience was a pretty quick card, and i definitely noticed a speed difference between 4x and 8x agp speed when playing around with it. as for the graphics being crappy, im not really sure unless you managed to get a card with a dying gpu (due to previous overclocking). you may want to take a look at the support forums of the games that are experiencing problems, maybe more people are having problems with ati cards. same thing happens to nvidia cards as well, its not just an "ati thing".

edit: one of my friends also owns an ati radeon 9800, with the right agp speed its normally quite a bit faster than the 5200. i borrowed the card once to see if the performance problems i was having with a game (guild wars) was my video card being slow or something else.

I recently installed a new Graphics Card. Nvidea GeForce N560gtx-Ti.

1280-720 is the recommended screen resolution. When I have it set to that, my screen doesn't fit my monitor (I'm using my 32-inch tv). It looks like my screen is zoomed in a bit. I changed the resolution to fit my tv so everything non-game related fits the screen perfectly. Newer games also fit the screen perfectly.

However, when I play Diablo 2 or another older game, my screen is zoomed in again. I changed some settings and the games fit the screen perfectly. I installed a Windows update and after that the games no longer fit the screen. I gave it my all to figure this out but I can't find a way to get everything to work again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm probably missing some information that might be needed to help, so don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi all.

here are the specs of my machine.

I have windows XP SP2, AMD K7 processor, Nvidia Geforce FX5200 with 128MB ram, 512MB ram with 219.29MB free, 224GB HD, DirectX 9.0c.

One of the games I am trying to run is "Requiem, Avenging angel" from 3DO.

I have played games on PC now for the last 10 years plus. I still have a lot of my older games which I used to run on my old machine running Win 98b with the older DirectX versions. I would like to be able to keep playing them, but games which use DirectX versions older than 7 cannot detect DX 9.

I have heard of some software which tells (lies to) the software that the version is what it wants. If this software exists or if there is any other workaround I would be very interested in any help at all with this issue.

The mouse stutters only when i move it very slowly on the mousepad, if i move it fastlyit seems to work smoothly with no stutter, however it's very annoyning andmakes those few games completely unplayable, because it's hard to shot enemies.
Ididn't have this issue on Windows 8.1 x64 and Windows 7 x64 (i was using thesame mouse as im using right now). Do you have any idea what could be cause of that?

A:I can't play my games anymore!?

The only thing I noticed with Vista and games is sometimes a game will load and you get to a black menu screen for the game. I play Silent Hunter 4 and the first time I loaded the game in Vista I had not issues at all. Me being me messed up how to handle admin account and user account so I did a clean install to start over. Once done I loaded Silent Hunter 4 again to play. No issues, loaded fine. I clicked to play and I got the load screen. Once I got to the menu of the game it was nothing but a black screen. I could hear the music and see my mouse cursor but nothing else. So, what I had to do was go to my videocard tweak program ( I just use the one offered by Nvidia, it works fine) and reset my video card to all the default values. Should be just a box to check and apply to reset to defaults. Once done, I ran the game and all was fine. I closed the game out and reset my videocard back up to the tweaks I like. My game ran fine every since. Give it a shot, it worked for me.

Hello

After I ran registry mechanic and defragged my hard drive (perfect disk - thrice, although I stopped the defrag half way through), none of the latest games work anymore (Call of duty 4, Crysis demo, Bioshock), although older games like Heroes of might and magic 3 still runs fine. Whenever I click to start a game, the splash screen will start, the screen will go black like when one normally starts a game, and then I'm just back at the desktop, with no error message. All other software works fine, like Ableton Live 5 etc.

I should also say that before all of this I decided to clean up my hard drive and deleted some files mainly in C:\documents and settings\bernhard\local settings\temp. I did not delete any read-only files. Maybe this screwed it up?

It's strange because everything works fine except these games all of a sudden.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Guys you won't believe it.

I reinstalled Vista yesterday because of this issue and also my games.
Yesterday everything worked.
Today I installed my applications and extra drivers and I started Racedriver GRID and it did the same thing.
So since its a new Vista install I checked what I installed today and removed the Windows Visual C and my Genius Fpen 610 driver.
Reboot and magically Grid and all my games started.

My Genius F610 Tablet driver for Vista was causing all the trouble!!!!
Can you believe that?

Thanks for everyones help!
Cheers

Hey guys I have AT&T "High-Speed" Internet DSL. I used to be able to host games and such when I was directly connected to the modem and nobody would lagg, and I would never lagg in games. Anyways, now I bought a linksys wrt54gl because I needed internet for myself and other people here at home. Well I tried the best I could, and I can join games (I play Borderlands and CS:Source and Team Fortress 2) but I can't host. When I host, my friends can't join, they used to be able to join me with no lagg... now they can't even join me.

I've tried port forwarding, disabling DMZ, removing the router firewall, tons of stuff. I can't get it to work, and I need to be able to host games again because I have the fastest internet.

Please help me out, I'm a newcomer and not too Tech Savvy but I'm not stupid either.

Thanks guys at Tech Support Guy Forums,
Andy

A:Can't host games anymore, help?!!

just for troubleshooting, put your computer in the DMZ (must have manual IP address). What the DMZ will do is route any traffic to that computer without any issues/port blocks etc.

I think I am in the right place but if this thread should be in another spot let me know.

I bought a computer a while ago and because it has a GeForce 7800 GS video card it sadly has the infinite loop problem. I managed to fix the Blue Screen of Death errors this problem causes when I downloaded the latest drivers for my card. I haven't had the crash problem since, but still have video rendering problems when I play some games like Battlefield 2 for instance what happens is the environment goes all screwy, I see a checkerboard type map on the ground or the image of the gun I am holding has odd triangle shapes coming off it or when I get into a vehicle the view is all triangles and flashing object or the other characters in the game look all sparkly and seem to be made up of odd triangle shapes. The only way to fix this is to reboot the system closing the game and starting it again doesn't work. Anywho the main reason I am here is because since I updated the video drivers ( I don't know what they were before or if this is the real reason for the problem) or because of something else other than the driver update, I can't say for sure as I didn't notice the problem right away because I didn't start the affected games for quite some time after the fact. I can still play COD4 but COD5, COD6, and Black Ops all fail to work and close down before they start COD6 actually stutters at the menu screen and I have to shut the system down by pulling the plug.... I've already asked this on two other forums, no one can give me a straight answer...here goes:

Whenever I play a game for more than 10 minutes, it locks up and I have to reboot my PC. Even after I reboot, it still occurs every single time. Also, if I want my games to run smooth, I have to run them as soon as I boot up the PC or else the frame rate goes to hell. I have all the latest drivers for my vid/sound card and XP. Defragged around 2 days ago.

The 2nd problem happened long before the first but I didn't think much of it...

I really have no clue what's wrong. Any ideas?

My specs:

AMD Athlon 2100+
512mb RAM
60gig HD
Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb
Sound Blaster Audigy
Windows XP

Thanks.

I hope someone has an answer to my dilemma. I like to play games online, especially at Yahoo.com and Pogo.com, but since yesterday I haven't been able to play any of the games. The games don't load for me anymore.

I have disabled the firewall and the pop-up stopper to see if it would help, but it didn't. I don't know what else to do. I am sure I am missing some files, but don't have a clue to which ones are missing.

Any help is greatly appreciated....

By the way my computer has windows 98SE.

Thank you in advance!

I have a gateway with a tsstcorp dvd =_ rw mlti format double layer drive and very suddenly I can no longer watch movies. Games play, cds play, audio fine. But I put in a movie and it's like there's no disc here. We've watched movies on it for over a year, so I checked multiple movies that once worked. I've followed the troubleshooting, tried to update driver. The wizard could find no better driver than what is already being used. I DO NOT get an error message. I just don't get anything to show up either under My Computer or in Media Center or Media player. Oh, and if it helps we have Windows XP Media Center Edition. This stumps me. I read somewhere "Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398)" was a problem but I even went to add/remove programs and couldn't find that paticular update, so I couldn't uninstall that.
Thanks for any help.

about 3 days ago, i was just on the computer. I went on the internet, tried downloading adobe after affects, and played minecraft. after awhile i got bored so i turned off my computer. When i decided to go back on later, i couldnt play my only 2 computer games which are wizard101 and minecraft. Internet, videos and other programs work just fine. Its just wiz101 and minecraft.

When trying to open wizard 101 i get 3 errors (see attached file). After all those messages go away i can type in my username and password to start the game, but it just tells me i am unable to connect to wizard101.

For minecraft, i have 2 different minecrafts installed. One of the minecrafts let me enter my password and username and begin playing the game, but after that the minecraft window just goes black and stays like that. When trying to play the OTher minecraft i get this error -

ive tried uninstalling and then re-installing minecraft, thats all. It did not work though. I havent tried anything else yet. I have a windows Xp. If you need anymore info on my computer or need me to be more clear about some things, please let me know. Thank you.

At least 2 old games gothic 1 and gothic 2 ( raven ). Both played well on my winXP 64-bit. I reinstalled them both. Gothic 1 has no images in intro, and the sound is very spotty. Gothic 2 also has no intro images and even stopped in the middle of intro.

It is the same computer, except some more games. The computer is virtually not connected to internet except when I need a patch. What could be the reason?

one year old gaming computer
winXP pro 64-bit service pack 2
AMD phenom II X4 955
3.21 ghz 8 gig RAM
radeon HD 4870 X2 2gig video RAM
BTW, the DVDs come from " gothic universal " which includes 3 DVDs ( No1 is gothic 1, No2 is gothic 2 and No3 is gothic 3 ). No3 which is gothic 3 works fine so I have no reason to think that the other two DVDs do not work because they are dusty or scratched. Most other games played well including both old and recent games.

I decided to install the game Grid but the installer will not run because it says that its not compatible with the windows version im running.. But 5 months ago i installed it with no problems. That happened with some other games i installed.. i have the same windows version on my desktop and there i never had any problem instaling just on my laptop.. I have vista home premium 64bit.
I already tried to go to the setup and run it in compability mode but still doesnt work..
What should i do? How come i use to be able to instal and now im not?

A:vista wont install some games anymore..

I have had the ability to play older games. I speculate that after installing SP2 on the x64 you lose the ability to install/play older x86 games. I cant play my MechWarrior 4 anymore and it has me annoyed. I also assume at times...even though sounds stupid..that newer hardware is just too high end for older games that they cant be installed on them. I know its silly but possible. Just keep trying in compatibility mold all the way back to windows 2000/xp settings and try it out more. It might just work if it feels like it.

Hi, I have a computer with hardware capable of running almost all current titles, EG Bf3, Dota2, counter strike GO, that was until a few months ago.
I started experiencing serious ping issues / packet loss in games causing me to completely freeze, then re-appear where I would have been. On counter strike source "string_cmds" graph peaks when this occurs.
The problem has got worse now, though, I can't play more then 10 minutes of ANY game before something goes wrong, be it a game crash or my whole computer shuts down resulting in one of the many Blue screen Stop errors I have said.
The game will run perfectly smooth, then suddenly my whole computer will shut down. This can happen about 5 times a day depending on how willing I am to restart the game.
Google chrome has just started to crash frequently now, too, and with limited income being 16 I need to fix this rather buy a new pc.

A:Multiple BSODs - 3B, 7e, 10, 50, can't play games anymore

Welcome to SevenForums,

I have had a look at your last 3 DMP Files, 2 of them are referencing memory.

Can you try these steps for me

Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+If there is no error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

   Tip
If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made earlier.

I received this error after trying to play europa universalis 4, after updating with the latest windows 8.1 updates. Yesterday all games worked fine, today, none of them run at all.

I've been searching for a solution but all i can find is update your graphics card / DirectX / install the Dx in the game folder itself, all of which i did, but none of it worked.

I've tried pretty much everything i could find about this problem, anyone have any ideas? Only difference is i am running all of this off a laptop with an intergrated graphics card though, and for the next few months my laptop is all i have in terms of a pc. Graphics card is Intel HD graphics 4600, which worked just fine a day ago.

This problem has occurred "somewhat"(I don't know when exactly) recently. I used to be able to play full screen games just fine but now (for some reason), everytime I launch a full screen game, it auto minimizes.

When I alt+tab back(or click the game icon on the task bar), it remaximizes the game but quickly gets minimized after a second.

Games play fine while in "windowed" mode(Warcraft 3, etc).. Full screen keeps minimizing.

I use Windows Vista Ultimate (64 bit):

Nvidia GeForce 8300(onboard video card).
I've done scans with Avast, Malware Bytes, and Super Antispyware and they all found nothing.

Three months ago(same system), full screen games played fine however I was on sort of a "full screen" gaming break, so I only recently tried playing full screen games like Warcraft 3 and this is when I encountered the "auto minimizes" problem.

The only major difference(between the time full screen games worked and now) is Avast 5. I upgraded from Avast 4.8 to Avast 5, other than that, there were no other major changes with the computer I am on.

Avast 5 is on Silent/Gaming mode, and I tried disabling all the shields temporarily to see if it would fix the issue but it didn't.

Does anyone have any ideas(or need anymore info that may help)? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

I was under the impression Vista was supposed to automatically download game information from allgame.com and display the game's information when you click on the thumbnail? My Vista hasn't done that since I installed BF2 and I haven't been able to manually add information using VGEE because I accidentally deleted the BF2 information and haven't been able to get another games information to show up since!

Does anyone know how to keep the Vista Games Explorer from automatically adding entries for games? I currently have a completely empty VGE and upon launching any of my games via double-clicking their exe, VGE creates a new entry once the game is closed. I already unchecked both "Download information about installed games" and "List most recently played games" in the VGE options window but that didn't help. I have a third party program that lets me add my own custom entries so obviously I'd like to add them manually so I have more control over fine details. I know that the automatically-created entries can be hidden after the fact, but that really clutters up the third party editor since it displays all games in its list, hidden or otherwise. Any thoughts?
