IMVU Installed in "AppData\Roaming" instead of "Program Files"

Q: IMVU Installed in "AppData\Roaming" instead of "Program Files"

This is not really a problem, more like a nerdy technical question, since I like being informed about the goings-on in my PC. I hope I posted it in the right section, since IMVU would probably fall more under "game" than anything else.

I have always been curious as to why would the developers of the chat client IMVU decide to have the program install within C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\IMVUClient (previous versions did so under "Documents and Settings") instead of "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" on Windows... I am also curious if this unconventional choice could potentially make my PC vulnerable to attacks.

Now, the program works fine AFAIK, but I'm puzzled by this. I'm the kind of user who likes having the choice of installing apps in a drive other than C: (to free space in C:, for portability, etc.), and who gets nervous when apps do not install or behave the way that I'm used to.

I was told by someone more knowledgeable than me that it was probably a lazy way to get around administrative install rights in Windows Vista and Windows 7. He also added that the cache data of the program shouldn't be in Roaming when there is no upper limit or even default size set on it.

And yes, this has been asked on their forums, but no staff member ever answered it (only a forum mod, who didn't have a clue).

Any ideas? Or am I being overly paranoid?

Ed.

I'm not sure what's the cause for this, but I believe it has to do with a recent SweetIM malware attack. I tried to fix it. And also did a system restore. Malware is gone, but this thing came up.

The error message comes up upon closing an app (NoteTab Light). It's trying to save some info, but can't. My browser, Opera, now also is unable to recall from the cache when it previously can. Apparently, something has changed that prevents writing to files within that folder. Maybe not just the Roaming folder, but the whole Appdata as well. I can't be sure.

In anyway, I found that I can manually add and edit files in the folder, but apps can't do that anymore. What could be the cause?

A:Cannot create file "c:\User\...\Appdata\Roaming...". Access is denied.

"Access is denied" could mean you're not administrator, or you haven't set the privileges of the action to allow yourself to do so..

I have Windows XP Pro., sp3.

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?

reoneill

A:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

there is a method to reset IE9, but can't tell if it also pertains to IE8 since it can't be opened.

Hi,
I recently installed a new ssd and did a fresh install of windows 8.1 on it. I am now using my old hdd as my main data drive in my laptop caddy. My problem is I did not back up my data on my hdd and format it. So I need to delete the "windows" , "program files" and "program files (x86) " folders from that hdd to free up some space.
I understand I have to give ownership to those folders for me to be able to do delete the folders. I have tired the methods suggested by this guide Take Ownership of a File, Folder, Drive, or Registry Key in Windows 8

I tried both of those commands

(To grant currently logged on user ownership of)

takeown /F "full path of folder or drive" /R /D Y

(To grant administrators group ownership of)

takeown /F "full path of folder or drive" /A /R /D Y

and it was succesful, however I still couldn't delete the folders. I would appreciate if anyone could enlighten me.

Hi all

Just joined the forum J

I have just upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit and I notice that after installation I now have two program File directorys. One called ?Program Files? and the other ?Program Files (x86).

Do I need both or can I delete the ?Program Files? one which I am guessing is the old 32 bit stuff.

By way of further information: I started out with Windows XP installed. I then did a upgrade install of windows 7 32 bit. I then decided to go 64 bit so I used the custom/fresh install option of the 64 bit upgrade which has left me with this possibly redundant ?Program Files? directory.

Any help of suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance

Kenny

After Avast did a full scan it listed some files it could not find. They were in the /appdata/local/opera mail/opera mail folder/ So I went to check and found 2 identical "Local" folders. I have a full backup copy of the hard drive which is only a month old and it has only 1 local folder. The only difference between is the addition of the Opera standalone mail program. Everything seems to work OK and no error messages except for the one from Avast. I did scan the files it could not scan and found no problems. Can anyone explain this to me?

Hi,

I'm using Windows 10 th2-10511 x64 and when I install EMET 5.5 final the EMET system service is installed with the "delayed start" flag and the service and never starts after a reboot. The same thing happened with the beta version, I didn't notice
it until the final was released. This issue doesn't occurs with EMET 5.2.
I switched the service back to the normal Automatic (not delayed) start, and everything seems to be working again. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue?

Also, can someone enlighten me about this warning message "DEP/ASLR Policy settings are ineffective by default; see user's guide on how to enable them". It appears when I enable the DEP/ASLR EMET GPO. I couldn't find any reference to this warning
message in the user guide. DEP seems to be enabled, I have no idea how to check for ALSR other than Process hacker that shows ASLR as N/A.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!
~Joe

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Good evening,

I was having a bit of difficulty dealing with a certain virus which has infected my computer.

It started when a number (maybe 15ish) of infected files were picked up by my AVG antivirus and sent to the virus vault. I immediately rebooted in safe mode such as to conduct a virus scan there; I ran it twice, first time removed infections (all of which were in the AppData folder), second time found none. I went ahead and rebooted normally, only to find that a new virus had been made (once again, in the AppData folder). Ran a controlled virus scan in AppData, it found one more. Ten minutes later, ran again, found nothing.

I went again into Safe Mode to try and remove the viruses... AVG found nothing. Rebooted into normal: another virus was created in AppData. Ran a controlled scan in AppData, found one more.

I admit to not being extremely tech-savvy, but from what I gather, the virus seems to be generating new viruses. I would appreciate if someone could help me resolve this issue.

I've followed the instructions in the "NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting for Malware Removal Help" to the best of my abilities, and I don't believe I've missed a step. Please let me know if I can provide any more information to help.

A:Virus creates new "infected" .exe files in the AppData folder

Good morning,

I don't mean to inadvertently bump the thread, however, I feel that I have some additional information which may be beneficial.

The virus either restores or creates a new virus every 10 - 15 minutes.

The virus keeps generating the .exe files into their own individual folders (once again, under AppData/Local/etc or AppData/Roaming/etc...)

Turning off the wifi appears to prevent the virus from generating new .exe files.

Hope this is helpful!

Sincerely,
Alex

Hi,

Have you tried changing the boot sequence inside the BIOS?

Normally pressing F2 or F12 on the computer will solve this.

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Thanks

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Hello,

I've scanned my laptop with SFC four times in this past week, and each scan ended with the same failure to repair specific files. I'm uncertain how to proceed with these corrupted files.

I followed the instructions in the SFC /SCANNOW tutorial; I installed the System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR in attachments) after running SFC three times and it managed to find and fix some sort of error. However, the results seem to be the same in the new SFC scan logs.

I also tried obtaining a .iso of Windows 7 home premium from Microsoft's website (Access Denied) to run a repair install, but it will not accept my product key due to it being a pre-installation provided by Samsung.

I do not have a Windows 7 installation disc so I cannot manually replace them like the tutorial suggests.
Also, I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I ran the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab troubleshooter several times as well (dism.txt is in attachments). Every single time it says that two problems were found:
1. Problems installing recent updates (Not fixed)
2. Service registration is missing or corrupt (Fixed)

Additionally, I've recently noticed that my free hard drive space has been decreasing rapidly. In the past two days, it has decreased by 2 or 3 GB, despite not downloading or installing anything. Is this related to my current problem with the corrupted files or something else? I don't know how to find what's eating up my storage space.

Any advice is appreciated,

Thanks.

What I want is a simple answer. Failing that, an answer that is not too complicated.
In my line of work, I am continually installing and reinstalling Windows and, on top, client-specified applications.
Ever since I went over to Windows x64; first, version 7; then 8, now 8.1, I have had recurring niggles and problems.
Initially, I always went with the suggested default installation base folder, which, for all the older 32 bit applications was, and still is: "C:\Program Files (x86)"
I continued accepting this default location, after I upgraded to Windows 8, and yes, with 8.1.
Now, I don't remember exactly when the very first niggles got me scratching my head but it started, so far as far as I can remember anyway: When an application that I had installed, could not find its associated icon because, according to the shortcut, it could not be found in its default location: "C:\Program Files\...". Of course it couldn't! The program in question, take your pick: Opera and Thunderbird, (Yes, I know they're both from the same place), was installed in "C:\Programs Files (x86)\" but the shortcut was looking for the associated icon in "C:\Program Files"! Now, yes, I know, that all 32 bit programs are, by default, installed to "C:\Programs and Files (x86)". This is easy to understand and explain: it separates all those 32 bit applications from their superior 64 bit brethren.
NOW WE'RE GETTING TO THE MEAT SO WAKE UP.

Both seem to get pretty good ratings, and I was thinking of getting one of them, then getting Norton AntiVirus when I have the extra $$$ available.

Any opinion's as to their ability to stop unwanted stuff from getting in, ease of setup & use would be appreciated.
One thing I've noticed is AVG only issues updates monthly--and I think Avast! is the same--is this often enough to effectively defend against new virii?

I went to the following link (from the "Please read here first..." thread) http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item10 but was unable to find a download for "hijack this". Does anyone have an alternative link to find Hijack this?

Thank you

EDITED:

A message appeared saying this website wants to run 'ietag.dll' from Microsoft Corp. Is that ok?

P.S. The problem is an increadibly SLOW start up time and "fairly" frequent freezing of the screen (enough to be very frustrating). The computer never goes into hibernate either and I've set it up to do so numerous times. Sometimes, after clicking the IE icon, nothing happens until I click it again a few minutes later. However, it then opens up 2-3 IE windows instead of the original one that I wanted.

I can't get a hijack this log because I can't find the hijack this download. Does the download via the described link, show up for other people?

Hi. I'm thinking about repairing Windows 7Home Premium 32bit with the DVD, because of BSOD, but I hesitate.

I first need to know if the backup folder called "Windows.old" will be a COPY (keeps Date Modified but updates Date Created) or a CUT (simply moves all folders to an other, thus doesn't change Date Created). Thanks!
So of course, only those who have ever reinstalled Windows 7 may know the answer. If you don't know but have reinstalled Windows 7 at least once, please spare 30 seconds to check, simply find a file like a picture or music that you had before the reinstall, and see in the bottom bar of explorer if its Date Created is the original or the reinstall date. You can also click Display tab in Explorer, then Sort by > Others > check "Date Created", > OK > Click display again > Sort by > Date Created. Don't mistake with Date Modified, I know the original Date Modified is kept upon copying, but it will update if you modify the file obviously. Please be honest and double check, losing 5.9 years old dates of my past would be heartbreaking, like mixing the pages of my diary!

Date Created is very important to me (and is underrated because it's not the default sorting option unlike Name/Type/Date Modified) because my computer is 5.9 years old, now has thousands of files and folders and it's easy to find them back and organize them with Date Created sorting if I didn't write tags or description in the file name.

Hi, I've looked all over the internet in attempt to find a solution to a problem that's just affected my computer, and I haven't been able to find anything that relates specifically to the problem I'm encountering.

This hit my computer without warning, I switched it on this morning and it worked as normal, all of a sudden things started to freeze up. I restarted the computer, and now a lot of programs are refusing to open - Microsoft Office, among others, states "Error: There Are No More Files", whilst other programs such as Google Chrome and Internet Explorer state "Attempt to Access From Invalid Address", even when I am running them from their root folders.

I am running a Dell Latitude 830 with Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2.00GHz, 2M L2 Cache, 800MHz) Dual Core, 1.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS, Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 and am obviously using Windows XP. I have scanned my system with Avast Antivirus, which didn't state that there were any viruses, so I am stuck as to what exactly the problem is.

I'd really appreciate some help in figuring out what has happened, thankyou so much for your time in reading this!

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

Another question/puzzle. Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I clean installed W8.1 three days ago, and the first thing I did was bring it up to date with all the offered updates. All installed successfully and I thought no more of it. At some point after this I made a system image backup, which today I have restored to. When I now look at the "classic" windows update screen it says I have never checked for updates and none are installed. Forcing a check for updates brings only two up as can be seen in the pictures. If I go to "view installed updates" then there is a lot of stuff in there, whih I assume could be the previously installed original batch.
I'm guessing this is normal behaviour but it seems slightly odd (the on screen messages at least)

A:No update history says "never checked" & "never installed"

Not odd... Considering that is a "clean install"(albeit with integrated updates) - thus no update history (file) exists.

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I thought I was computer savvy until this problem came up. When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. I have posted that here, and really hope that someone can help me with this. I have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, none of which has help. I am running Window XP w/SP2. You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

I can see "roxio" program in the list of "uninstall or change a program". But I dont see it in the list of "All Programs" on start to use it. There is no desktop icon created to activate this program and this icon is not available on quicklaunch either

Now how can I use this roxio program ? where can I find list of all executable programs and how to execute them ? I clicked on the name of this program in "uninstall or change a program" list. I got a message asking to remove this program. So I cancelled it. I right clicked on this proghram to find the path. But nothing came out. I looked in Program Files to find this program, but found nothing there either. I tried to check in the task manager, if any process is running for "roxio" but nothing was there.

How can I use this application now ? If this program is not there in the system then why does it appear in the "uninstall or change a program" list ?

thanks

A:program name "roxio" appearing in the "uninstall or change a program" only

Go to your system manufacturer's web site and download the Roxio software installation package and re-install it. If option for "repair" appears - choose it.

As the title states, I was wondering how I would do that? Because I really want to add a custom ".tga" 'close' button to my windows theme. I am using WindowBlinds:
(link) - Skin the Windows desktop interface with WindowBlinds

WindowBlinds let's me edit and make my own theme by using their own .tga files or you can make/import them yourself to your desire.

This is the Theme I want to extract the files from:
Placebo for Windows 7 by SolMiler on deviantART (Won't work for Windows 8 that's why I am asking here.)

Here's what my buttons look like now:
What I want them to look like: (Angst version of Placebo theme)
Any info would be very appreciated!

A:Extracting ".tga" files from ".mui" or ".msstyles"

You can use Gimp to convert them, I used 2.6.12 Download The Gimp 2.6.12 - FileHippo.com

Open the .png in Gimp.

Click File > Save as
Remove png
Add tga
Save

I exported the button images from Placebo for you they are in the zip folder below.

Thanks to other helpful threads on these forums, I have worked through some maintenance that seems to have resolved the constant BSODs I was having, in large part via sfc /scannow.

I believe I only have one issue remaining as far as sfc is concerned:

Code:
Cannot verify component files for Microsoft-Windows-RPC-HTTP.Resources, Version = 6.1.7601.17514, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture = [l:10{5}]"en-US", VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral, manifest is damaged (TRUE)
If I understand what I've read in other posts correctly, sfc is telling me that it cannot verify "C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-rpc-http.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_en-us_b143921936942d2a\rpchttp.dll.mui" because manifest is damaged.

I think this is the manifest: "C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests\amd64_microsoft-windows-rpc-http.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_en-us_b143921936942d2a.manifest" and the file is zero length, so it makes sense that sfc cannot use it to verify the file.

In the interest of completeness, there really is a corresponding system file installed at "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-US\rpchttp.dll.mui".

It doesn't seem like doing a repair install is worth it for this one file - I'm not having BSODs anymore, but it would be nice if sfc could complete a clean run, so I have tried to pursue the approach of finding the origi... Read more

Hello all!

I don't understand what the issue is but I am logged on as administrator on my computer and only a few of my files I can access. the window will pop up stating that i don't have permission to view the file! if I am the adminitrator i should have full access to any file, right? this is extremely annoying!!! is there anyway to completely disable this useless function? I've tried to go in to the properties of each file and reset permissions to my admin name (whereas it does it but beside the icon there is a small red X. I don't understand what this means). I've also tried to change the ownership to "Everyone" and that does not work either.

the wierd thing is that it is only on certain files, like programs, or executables to install programs. Most of these i have moved over from XP using the transfer wizard.

This function has no purpose for me and i would like to completely disable it. I am the only person who uses this computer and it would seem to me that there would be a way to completely disable it or there would be a setting to enable access to any and all files without having to go into each file individually to set ownership and permissions.

Does anyone know of a way to aleviate this issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!

I am running Windows 7 on an iMac with VMware Fusion. Everything was fine for three months. Then slowly, problems started showing up. A notice would come up saying that Windows Explorer wasn't working and needed to close. (re-booted) So far, it is still only occasionally.

Then the screen size display began to change EVERY time Windows was restarted. The change was to a different size each time. (changed it back) It is getting to be a real pain!

Now the "My Computer" screen only works occasionally.(in the beginning, I rebooted. Now that doesn't help) When it doesn't work - the box is mostly blank with a horizontal "thermometer" where the words "my computer belong" slowly moving across the top. Even when the line is filled, the "my computer" screen doesn't fill in. When I do get a screen, I am only able to move files or folders for a short time. After that, I get a square when clicked on says "calculating" - and it never finishes. This happens with moving many, or only two or three files. I am also unable to click and highlight several random files with the control key held. This also happens with the recycle bin. I am unable to delete the files there.

I have a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 800 MHz I use three different registry cleaners (had lots of problems before Windows7 and am not too happy with 7) and a Malware program. I have a software program that offers a repair feature on its disc. Is ther... Read more

from here i get to know tht there are some hidden files in my pendrive(usbport) but how to deleted it when it doesnt display when i click the drive...

A:remove hidden files in "USB drive"/ "pendrive"

The files may be tagged as hidden or system files. Assuming you are using some version of MS-Windows on your computer, there are options for Windows Explorer to hide or show certain file types. Setting the options to show all files may cause the files on the drive to appear.

I would use caution when attempting to remove files from the drive. There may be a chance the files are needed for proper operation of the drive.

I was browsing the web recently on the general subject of Image File creation and am puzzled by several references to "mounting files"

I'm pretty hazy about this process and would appreciate an explanation without getting too technical if that would be possible .

A:"Mounting" files - Can somebody explain this term to a "non-techie"?

General explanation is here.

In case of ISO (and other image files) mounting would be loading that image file in the emulator of CD/DVD drive, so it can be accessible in My Computer. In My Computer it will look like you have another dvd drive with dvd loaded in it (but that would be just an image file loaded to an emulator).

Afternoon, I'm a bit boggled by this issue we are having on a PC at our office. It seems that the PC normally will boot up and the memory usage will be low 2 GB / 16 GB until 10-12 minutes go by then it shoots up 11 GB / 16 GB. It's really odd and I can't explain it, since no applications are started.

I took it upon myself and downloaded RamMap. Using RamMap I was able to determine that the memory is caused by "mapped files" under "file summary" I can see the two large files which are to blame. But I'm not able delete these currently until tomorrow to confirm the user doesn't need them.

What I'm looking for is an answer as to why these files seem to be singled out? Thanks in advance. I've included a screenshot to the RamMap findings and my understanding with how memory is handled is limited.

EDIT - I can see now only 1 large file is being selected for "mapped file".

I just got done using the MS fix it tool to remedy the compress old files hang that occured when you used the disk clean up tool . There were about 20k old files that no matter how many times you ran disk clean up they were never compressed ...as a matter of fact at times I would actually see an "Increase" in files listed in the compress old files line AFTER I did selected "compress old files" clean!!!

So I used the MS fix it tool to solve the problem and ....you guessed it the tool removed the option for "compress old files" ! Now it is no longer there. MS states that they deleted this option to prevent the hang issue. But this is why I want to know whether these old files are actually being compressed when i use the defrag and it says "compacting files" ..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Is "compacting" files in defrag the same as "compressing old files" in disk clean up?

Hi

The 'compressing files' referred to by a defragmenter is the process of moving the files it has put together to the start of the drive.

When defragmenting files, it moves the pieces of the file to an empty space further into the drive. Once it has done this to all the files, it moves them back to the start of the drive as this is generally the fastest part.

This doesn't compress files like the option in disk clean up.

the worst part, I right clicked, the only option is UNPIN THIS PROGRAM FROM TASK BAR where that program was not pinned in the first place (didnt show up in pinned list) , how come only this option pop out?

If the default program for an extension is wrong, I find it most natural to change it using the 'Choose Program' option on the 'Open With' menu from the context menu for the file. However, that stopped working correctly a few weeks ago. It is supposed to bring up a dialogue that allows one to choose another program and, optionally, to make that be the new default for the file type. However, what is happening now is that it goes ahead and invokes an irrelevant program (the Emacs text editor) which cannot handle the file. I never see the 'Choose Program' dialogue.

(E.g., I am trying to open a video file with a different player, and, when I click 'Choose Program', it immediately hands the file to Emacs, rather than giving me the chance to say I want to use VLC. (Fortunately, Emacs realizes that the file is too big for anything it can normally do and awaits verification before actually trying.))

I know I can still modify the association using Folder Options; but I would rather get 'Choose Program' working again if anyone can show me how.

Running Windows XP Home SP3 on a dual-core AMD Athlon computer with AMD 960G for graphics. (I think the TSG SysInfo would be overkill for this issue; but I will provide it in a reply if someone thinks it could help.)

I'm looking for a program capable of interpreting one key and changing it to another, like a middle man. So, in a simple example, output the letter "b" when I push "a". Or in a more complex example, convert things like movements of a joystick into movements of a mouse, or triggers on the joystick which seem to be registered by games as things like "Logitech Joystick button #1", into keystrokes like "w". Hopefully that's understandable?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Hi-
Thank you for reading and wanting to help.
From reading most of the topics on this site, I realize I am at a very beginner level of computer literacy, so please bear with me if my questions and descriptions sound silly.

Tonight, when I started up my computer, I got this message in a bubble coming from an icon representing "Antivirus System Pro alert" in the tray on the bottom right:

"[picture of white x in red circle] Windows Security Alert
Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan you computer. Your system might be at risk now."

Well, I realize now as I typed it, it has a grammatical error, which gives it away as not real, but anyway I clicked on it, and apparently I have installed some demo version of something called "Antivirus System Pro alert".

So I went to CP to remove the program, but it is not there in the list.

So question one- where is the program so I can remove it?

Question two- I purchased BIT Defender Total Security 2009 for about $90 so if this is a virus or something, why did it not catch it?

And now, that stupid window keeps popping up, along with another window on its own at the bottom right, with the header of the box being "Antivirus System Pro alert" saying
"INFILTRATION ALERT
Your computer is being attacked by an Internet Virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan-dro... Read more

I'm trying to run KM Player 3.1.0.0_R2 in portable mode (no install) in Vista x64 and save preferences in KMPCfg.ini. Just extracting the KMP installer files to a folder allows it to play files just fine, if open them from KMP UI.

I want to open files from Explorer folders, by R clicking & selecting "Open With." Without installing KMP, of course it's not on the list of programs. NOR will it PUT KMP on the list if I browse to it's folder & the .exe file (even if check, "Always use this program to open this kind of file." I suppose the reason KMP doesn't show up in the "Open With" list (and won't let me add it) is because necessary registry entries weren't created by installing it.

Same thing happened when I tried associating a file type w/ KMP (like .wmv), through Control Panel. It wouldn't change the association when I browsed to the executable.

I used the utility OpenWithAdd utility to supposedly register KMP to show up in the Open With list. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/openwithadd.htm
It actually added a KMP registry entry for .WMV files in

But, I guess it still doesn't show up on the Open With list because there aren't any other registry entries w/ KMP'... Read more

Well, no gurus? Maybe can add a portable app to "open with" context (dunno), but you can add it to the "Send To" context, then use that when R click files in explorer.

I was given an HP laptop with vista and it is very slow to start up. I was uninstalling some programs and I sort by date so I can see the crap that was recently installed... the "installed on" date was there and now its not. It shows name and size but date is gone now. Anyone know why it went away and how to get it back? It may seem stupid but I like to know the date so I don't accidently uninstall anything that was installed by HP and may be essential.

Also any advice or programs on how to start up faster... I have run virus scan with avast, ran spybot, deleted startup entries, cleanup, defrag. Anything else I can do?

Thanks!

I was working on a laptop I maintain and noticed a new folder on the non-system drive (D:/) in the folder I had created for downloaded files to go to. It is named "confirm.aspx_files".

I assume it was created when some software was installed, but the user insists they did not intentionally install anything. I'm wondering if it can be deleted but can't find any information about it doing a web search.

Does anyone here know what it is and what program was installed?

A:What is folder "confirm.aspx_files" ? An installed Program?

Looks like the remnants of an web-page saved by Firefox (.ASPX is an web extension and Firefox create folders that end in _files for saved web-pages.)

Hi,

I am running Windows 7, 64 bit.

This is the problem. When searching a folder, I am looking for all .cfg files. I can see at least 4 .cfg files in the folder, however, when I search *.cfg, it comes up with no results. I know this is not an error in Windows, and I feel as if I am overlooking something simple.

I see that .cfg files are tagged as "configuration" files and I assume Windows is trying to protect me. In reality, in this specific folder, these are broken files/un-completed download files from my download manager, Gigaget. I just want to remove these files in a specifc folder I have set up to house incoming downloads, so there's no risk of deleting anything important that my system would need.

Does anyone know how to rectify this dilemma.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Hey Friends,

I guess its not only me having this, is it? Many of us have it right? so whats the thing which brings up this dialog box > Scan and Fix /or/ Continue without scanning > when you connect an external device to your computer?
i had some time some bad day of mine when i clicked on the Scan and Fix and the result was the windows converted a very large number of my files into .CHK files hidden in the HDD!! and i still cannot find a way to recover those most most important files of mine (they are text files). I did recover a large bundle of files, but not the ones i actually needed more than anything! those text files. i have gone through literally 30,000 files and recovered almost everything > videos, movies, images, and messed up bits of large installation files of softwares like AE broken down to many many small pieces... but that doesnt matter! that stuff can be recovered (softwares and movies and songs) but the text files are still among those .CHK files i have which are still more than 10,000.

Anyone have anything regarding this is more than Welcome to share their Knowledge.
Thanks.

My Windows XP, SP2 system has recently developed some problem behaviour:

For example, if I download an executable (say ppp.exe); open the containing folder using Explorer and "right-click" "open" on the file ppp.exe, the executable does not execute. Instead the Explorer window shows an "hour glass" cursor and the Explorer window shows the (not Responding) message in its title.

The only way to recover has been to power off the machine - the Windows shut-down sequence appears to be broken.

Similar behaviour occurs if I "double-click" on the executable.

If I boot Windows XP in safe mode, I find that I can execute the ppp.exe file with success, but this is cumbersome and recently I have been experiencing problems getting into safe mode.

Also, the "Add or Remove" program has stopped working - I get the "hour glass" hang during what should be a normal uninstall sequence.

I would appreciate help in getting my XP system back to working condition.

Thanks.

<< I am using linux gcc compiler >>
#include<stdio.h>
void main()
{
printf("Hello !!!");
}

I get the object file of this source code using the command cc -c hello.c. I compile it using the the command cc hello.c and get hello.out, i find that it needs /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 and /lib/ld-linux.so.2 library (using command ldd hello.out) and therefore i try to LINK using the command ld /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 /lib/ld-linux.so.2 hello.o but i get an error
ld: warning: cannot find entry symbol _start; defaulting to 00000000080481b4
HELP ME !!! How do i link my program ... ???
( I know that just typing cc a.c will automatically link compile and do everything in a simple way ... I have to do symbol table manipulation and some other stuffs !!! .... Therefore I need to learn how to link object files to libraries MANUALLY )

A:Help linking object files using " ld " or "gold"

Why do you want to create object files and then perform linking manually. Let the both process happen automatically and give the job to the compiler. You may use the following command to get your executable,

gcc -o hello hello.c

cheers

I'd like to use CCleaner to delete the contents of my TEMP folder. Not Temporary INTERNET files folder; I mean the TEMP folder in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\TEMP . I think it's holding leftovers from application installs, etc. Is there one in the Windows folder too? (what's the difference?)
CC has a a box to check that deletes what CC calls simply "Temporary Files" but it only deletes the temporary internet files and my TEMP files are still there even thoug I've rebooted, etc. "Temporary files" doesn;t mean the TEMP filder to CC.

Also, would it be fine for me to delete contents of TEMP simply by doing select>delete? For some reason I didn't think it should be done that way though.

I am not sure you can change the fonts though if you wish you can change the text from "Shutting Down" to "Bye Bye" or so, by editing, winlogon.exe.mui.

Hey everyone,

Unfortunately, my computer has been infected with a particularly virulent, or relatively new, virus (for which I am currently awaiting help on the Malware removal sub-forum). I wanted to ask, though, if anyone else has had to deal with this particular Trojan before because, from what I have been able to find out, it (i.e. Trojan_Win32.Generic, or "TidyNetwork.com") doesn't seem to have a remedy as of yet. I've checked just about every virus database I could and have come up empty handed every time. What's more, I've downloaded and ran half a dozen different top-shelf Anti-virus' scans and removal programs, only to end up disappointed.

Does anyone know what the deal with this thing is?

Best,

John

Hey guys. This morning I got a really strange error code. When I tryed to update Steam on my PC, this error message popped up;

"The instruction at "0x00172058" referenced memory at "0x00d1004". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.

Lately, I have'nt been able to install WoW either, I install it all the way to 100% and then when I try to launch it, I obviously have to re-download all the patches but it prompts me that I have to install it again, even though it is all there.

Tryed downloading the full game digitally off of wow-europe.com too, I click run to get it started, nothing happens and then this message pops up.

"The instruction at "0x00182058" referenced memory at "0x0f070014". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.

I don't know what's up with it. My freind told me to run a CHKDSK /R to see if there was anything wrong with my drive and it ran smoothly, although I must say it took about an hour or so.

So, that was complete, tryed to do it again and I still kept getting these error messages. But I saw something on my desktop that wasn't there previously. It is an error log. Here is the error log;

One feature I really liked in XP was the ability to look in a folder through My Computer and sort the files by extension. For example if I wanted to get all .jpg files to one side of the folder as I looked for a file, I could click View, Arrange Icons By, Type and make that happen. I don't see that feature in Windows 7. I'm using W7Pro and can't find that or a similar feature anywhere. Is it here and I just haven't found it? TIA

Hi - I have a thinkpad x61t. When it's in the docking station, whenever I press "shift" "alt" or "ctrl" a little pop up window tells me that key is being pressed. The laptop does not do this when it's out of the docking station. I've looked all over the control panel in vista and can't find any setting.

Any ideas how to switch it off? Driving me nuts! Thanks.

You mentioned that you have looked in the Control Panel so this may be something you tried already:

Control Panel - Ease of Access Center - Make the keyboard eaiser use - uncheck 'Turn on sticky keys'.

I have been using the same HP Pavilion tx1000 for a year and a half with no software or compatibility issues. I run Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1 - 32 bit. I tried reinstalling the programs, doing a system restore to the oldest restore point I could, I also tried uninstalling any window updates that were installed right before my problems. I have read some strings that indicate it may be a compatibility issue between the service pack 1 and vista but the service pack came with the computer and it has been working fine until recently. I am at loss what to try next. Has anyone using Vista Home Home Premium experience anything like this!!!
