Cannot install softwares which require unpacking large files

Q: Cannot install softwares which require unpacking large files

Hi guys, I have just recently upgrade my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7, but since then I haven't been able to install most games.

During installation, each game has a different error message but generally, the problem seems to lie in games that require unpacking large files, such as *.bin. For example, while trying to install Assassin's Creed 3, this message appeared:

An error occurred while unpacking: archive corrupted! Unarc.dll returned an error code: -7. ERROR: archive data corrupted(decompression failed)Click to expand...

or

Decompression failed with error code: -12. Bad CRC in the archive data0.binClick to expand...

Please help me, I'm going mad.

Computer's spec:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (4CPUs)
RAM: Elixir DDRam 3 2GB x2
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
DirectX 11
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D
BIOS: 9/24/9 Ver: 08.00.15

What I've tried so far:

Updated drivers of graphic card, mainboard, etc.
Ran as Administrator.
Installed in safe mode.
Tried installing these games in another computer (everything's fine)
Reinstalled Windows 7.
Formatted entire HDD, reinstalled Windows XP (now even Windows XP has this problem)
Bought a new HDD

I have bought new laptop. my laptop model is Lenovo G550(32 Bit, 3 GB RAM, 320 hard disk, 2.06 processor). I have got inbuilt windows vista home basic and created a back up in 2 DVD by lenovo one key recovery. by doing this this I made a genuine copy of windows vista home basic. but few days ago my system got corrupt and it need to repair or reinstall. so I used the those 2 DVD and trying to repair the system. but it shows me the message like "the image format is supported or corrupt". I am unable to install it. so I have install windows vista home premium in my laptop. I have installed some drivers like audio, graphics, lan, wlan, etc...

But I haven't get Lenovo's on software like easy capture, variface, easy recovery.

May you help me???

A:Require Lenovo G550 Softwares

Hi-

If the recovery DVDs that you burned are bad, use the recovery partition to re-install Vista. If the recovery partition is bad, you will need to purchase replacement recovery DVDs from the system manufacturer.

My friend decided to download something without double checking, and via installation a huge number of unwanted software were installed on his computer. Immediately after installation, both Chrome and Internet Explorer were modified. After restarting the laptop once, the following things happened

1. The screen brightness was changed, and power option could not be accessed to revert the change
2. The "start" taskbar was changed from blue to white, which usually indicated something was changed in the power and/or graphics setting as far as I know.
3. Internet access was removed, and windows could not detect any hardware to connect to the internet. The laptop's model number was Asus X555L and it ran on Wireless before.

I ran both DDS and GMer, as well as taking 4 screenshots. Here are the files and what they are

Whenever I download a large archive, whether it's 7z, RAR format or some bin format (that's unpacked via provided installer), I always have problems unpacking.

What happens is that, while extracting, I receive errors about some files that are corrupted and cannot be extracted. The FUNNY thing is, if I try to extract the same archive again it says some other file is corrupted while the one that was "corrupted on my first try now extracts properly. I don't know how is that even possible.

1) I know that the archives I download/get from friends are not corrupted, and I can trust those sources.
2) I've tried basically everything, like re-downloading, trying with numerous attempts, and updating the software I use (7z, Win RAR, or Daemon tools for those bin archives I mentioned).

Any help? Thanks,
VAO

A:I ALWAYS have problems unpacking files. Any help?

I'm wondering if your hard drive has some bad sectors. You might run a disk check program to see. Your drive manufacturer will probably have one.

My problem is that if u wanna unpack an exe file, could be a setup exe., then it will save the data in the temp folder (Windows drive), and my problem is that i made a patision (or however to spell that in english.. ) so i got 10 gb for windows, so if my windows ****s up i will be able to just reinstall without worrying too much for my files. (Programs like registery mechanic will often solve the registery prob.) Anyways, this means i don't have enough space on my c-drive, as i should have given it more ofc.. Should have given it 15 instead, as my programs are on that drive aswel... anyways! thats not the matter.. the matter is that when some exe. files wants to extract they want to extract huge amounts of software before installing, im talking about 1,3 gb + here, and i cant get that much space without deleting half of my programs or so.. SO what i want to know, is there a way to manualy unpack an exe. file ? Or is there a way to change its unpacking destination, so it won't save in temp.. thanks for all upcomming answer.

A:Hard times unpacking exe files.

Change the place where it unpacks to the other partition you have for files, programs etc. This should be on the extraction wizard.

Did a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro x64 on a desktop i7-2660K machine a week ago. Since then, there's been a problem that didn't exist before the clean install, namely web page loading is very slow while downloading large files, a few hundred mb to a few gb. Pause the downloads and pages load normally. Before the install, the page file was set to system managed size. System drive is fast Plextor SSD and RAM is 16gb. I've now tried 32gb max and still slowness. Not sure where to turn on this. This is a relatively fast cable system (Charter), with line to the computer through an Linksys E1200 router (for wireless laptop). Any ideas? One thing I hadn't done yet is reinstall the router on the desktop, but I just did that and it makes no difference. Is that necessary? Thanks,

A:Slow web when downloading large files after clean install

I'm interested in any responses to this as well, because in my opinion Microsoft screwed it up.

I'm not sure when they changed it, but I noticed they changed this quite a while back. The change they made seems to give full bandwidth to the first thing you start downloading, but as you've discovered it's a nightmare like this because it means you can't do anything internet related until the download has finished. In the case of a large download, that's frustratingly limiting.

How it was before, Windows seemed to balance the load so you could have something downloading in the background, but still carry on with other things on the internet. How it is now, the second thing you try to access on the internet will usually result in a timed out error and if doesn't it's so incredibly slow that it's unusable.

It's not just with file downloads either, if you've got a heavy loading webpage, you can't just leave it loading that page and go view another webpage, because the first webpage sucks all the bandwidth to itself . Also, if you click a link on a heavy loading webpage, it won't do anything due to the webpage sucking all the bandwidth. So you either have to wait for the whole page to load first, or you have to open the link in a new tab, then close the heavy loading webpage tab.

I don't know what they were thinking to be honest because it's pretty bad as it is now. Maybe on a super-fast Microsoft LAN they don't notice how bad it is, but in the real world the changes t... Read more

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

A:moving large number of large files to new drive

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

first of all, hello to you all

as they thread title may allude; i am a little disgruntled at my first atempt to install my brand new genuine Windows 7 x64 Home Premium OEM

after the first 4 attempts at installing Win7 i managed to get around the installer asking for 'unknown device driver' by unplugging my card reader. I have been running XP x64 OEM for some time and have re-installed it at least 5 times and have never had any problems what so ever; if only the same were true for Win7!

having done some research it became clear that Win7 should take no more then 30-40 minutes to install; but here i am 23hrs later and it STILL hasn't even started installing yet; its still 'unpacking windows files' @ 99%...

has anyone else had this problem? if so, what did you do to fix it?

thanks in advance

A:23hrs - "unpacking windows files"

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Nice job on the system specs.

Sorry your having problems.
How long has it been at 99%?

We've made a list of questions which are the result of reoccurring incidents seen so far.
If you can have a look at these and give us your answers we'll be able to give you better suggestions.

Questions to use for help with Installation Issues

We have also seen people with AMD mother boards having these problems, try taking out all memory cards except one, if that doesn't work then move the memory card to a different slot and try again.

Do you have HyperTransport function settings in your BIOS?
There are two options in the BIOS Setup called K8 -- KN HT Speed and K8 -- KN HT Width, both are normally set as Auto. Change them to K8 -- KN HT Speed to 1x and K8 <-> KN HT Width to 8 8. You can change them back after the install.

If this doesn't work, then reply with more details and we'll try again.
EDIT:
Just read a thread where a guy with an AMD board was having similar problems said he turned off 'Cool 'n Quiet' setting (the feature that turns down the fan RPM). He also found a bad RAM stick by running memtest86+. After that Win7 installed with no problem. Might be worth a try.

Hi
I got a very unusual problem. Whenever I try install any software (archived format), i get error messages like "installation source is corrupt", "cannot extract files from package", "cannot install software. if you are installing from CD please check whether the CD is in the CD-ROM or not, or if you are installing from a network, check your network connection" and errors similar to this.

Of course, i re-downloaded installation files from DIFFERENT sources each time, but again this error does not goes away.

Due to this I cannot install Java, anti-virus and my favorite media-player too.

I have noticed that these errors only occur when the installation file is above 15 MB. I'm in great headache due to this.

One more thing, I got these errors when I tried to clean install my windows XP from CD. I think some files may be missing from my O/S or there is problem in my RAM.
Please help!

OK i guess that you have a 160gb hdd partitioned off, and winxp on c: works fine but d: is an issue
do you have any of the error messages for the failed program install attempts.

How did you install xp on d:
How much freespace does d: have after the xp install.
Are you using xpsp3 cd's or earlier versions and installing the servicepack

"then after the entire copying process the system will restart then while boot it suddenly gets off.."

Does the Vista have SP1? If not there was a tool on MS site called something like Windows Installer Cleanup Tool. My issue was I would run certain programs and it would ask me if I wanted to install them(they were already installed but Windows installer was messed around.)

Just google for that cleanup tool if you don't have SP1.

A:Can I install XP softwares on windows7

It depends on the software. Most software that installs on XP will install on W7 also, though there are a few incompatible programs. Some programs will require running in compatibility mode. With Ultimate, it is also possible to use XP Mode, if you hardware supports it...although I don't know how useful that would be on a laptop.

A:BSOD after fresh re-install with no new softwares

Points at your Marvell Yukon drivers again.
Drivers are pretty old:

Code:
8c35b000 8c3a1000 yk60x86 yk60x86.sys Tue Jul 31 06:11:26 2007 (46AF0ACE)
As you've had this issue in the past, try updating the drivers again.
Also, once that's done, update all of your drivers (there's some more old one's in there) and then update to Service Pack 2.
If it still happens, then I'd suggest trying another network card to see if that fixes it.

Hey guys! today i just used my dad's USB to boot SeaTools to scan for my PC (BSOD Issue).
I didnt realize that booting a program would cause it to change function and delete the files. Is there any program i can use to retrieve the old files with its name and folders and can i change it into normal storage data (USB size is 16GB)?

A:Any softwares to recover files from booted USB?

It doesn't....when you installed SeaTools you probably formatted the USB drive, thereby removing the files on it.

Try Recuva to see if anything is recoverable.

Hi, Using Program Compatibility Mode in Windows 7 It can be quite annoying when you try to install a driver or other software on Windows 7 just to find out it isn?t compatible with the new OS. Today we look at using the Program Compatibility Assistant, and troubleshooting compatibility issues so programs install successfully. Program Compatibility Assistant Program Compatibility is a mode that allows you to run programs that were written for earlier versions of Windows. The Program Compatibility Assistant detects compatibility issues and allows you to reinstall using the recommended settings. For example we got this error trying to install a music interface device driver for home recording. After we closed out of the error, the Program Compatibility Assistant came up advising that the program didn?t install correctly. To try to install it again select Reinstall using recommended settings. The Compatibility Assistant went through and fixed the issue and we were able to install the driver. The problem was the driver was designed for Vista and the the assistant automatically select the correct compatibility mode for us to install it.Sometimes you might get a screen similar to this example where Virtual PC 2007 isn?t compatible with Windows 7 and you can check for solutions online. After checking for solutions online, we?re shown that there is an update that might solve the issue.Which points us to the Microsoft site to download Virtual PC 20... Hello there, I'm having issues for some time with chinese software that installs automatically without any permission and some chinese adware that always appears on my browsers.
I would like to remove those annoying adwares and softwares permanently.

The chinese adware, I don't know how it works exactly, but it opens randomly on the lower right corner of my browser so I have to clike the cross to close it all the time... It is totally random it seems, sometimes I'm on facebook and it appears, sometimes I'm reading news and it appears. I don't even know how to name it because I don't understand chinese... I only know it opens everytime that I open browser and I don't know how or when it will open again.

I'm sending some images.

I've used my antivirus to scan and also used malwarebytes to scan and nothing was found... But sure there is something installing all this stuff automatically. I remember I have uninstalled/deleted those softwares over than 5 times.

(P.S. I know I'm sending links of shortcuts on recycling, I've had deleted the shortcuts firts so later uninstalled where we uninstall softwares) But they just came again =________________=

Hi,

My system is showing low disc space and when I try to install programs its getting cancelled because of that.

I tried cleaning up my disc yet the problem exists, I always use the cleaning program.
yet its showing low disk space. Only my C:\ drive is full rest of all the drives have a lot of space. I tried uninstalling couple of programs from the C:\ drive but yet the problem is there. I was actually trying to uninstall some programs from the C:\ drive and installing it to the other drives but after I uninstalled it, it is not getting installed saying that I have low disk space.

Is there any way to change the location of the programs in the C:\ drive to other drives without actually uninstalling them.

Can I increase the space of my C:\ drive by adding a hard drive?
Can anyone guide me to add an additional hard drive?

Thanks,

Gopu.

A:Disk space showing low, cant install new softwares

Hi gopu again!

Actually you are not supplying all the information required

Your harddrive is 80Gig
Your C drive is Used? Free? amount. You can find this information by going to My Computer-->Right click on C drive-->Select Properties

Please supply this information

...and installing it to the other drivesClick to expand...

What other drive?
Is it an external drive? An internal Drive? Or another Partition on your single HardDrive?

Is there any way to change the location of the programs in the C:\ drive to other drives without actually uninstalling themClick to expand...

There are tools that can do this, but I wouldn't advise this
You are best to uninstall fully first
Be aware that installing programs to other drives (other than C drive) will, in most cases, still install some files to C drive (ie into Windows folder)

Can I increase the space of my C:\ drive by adding a hard drive?Click to expand...

This question is too confusing! Please re-word it.

Can anyone guide me to add an additional hard drive?Click to expand...

This depends on if you have Sata or only ATA availability on your motherboard
Also this will also put more strain on your Power Supply and Motherboard
In most cases, it can be easily done, as long as there is availability of motherboard connection, and physical area available.

This might be a stupid question but when it comes to backing up your personal files, is there any difference between manually copying the files to another location or using backup software?

I've been backing up terabytes of video and music files manually (i.e copying the files directly to the drive) from my internal HDD to external HDD however, I've been told that such method is not recommended. Instead using dedicated backup software is a lot more "safer and reliable" which I'm not sure how such method differs from just copying and pasting the files.

Ultimately I haven't been paying attention to various ways of backing up the data such as using cloud services, raids etc as I always manually copied and pasted the files to another location. I'm not sure such practices is dangerous or not though I was wondering if I should start using backup software to back up my files.

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

I read that there are some applications that should be installed using the "run as administrator" option, and some of them not.
My question is how do i know a program should be installled using this option??

Is it possible that a program doesn 't run correctly or without optimun capacity because of using the wrong usser account??

How do i know that i am not running as Admin by default?

Which account should i use by default in order to be optimally safe?

Why when I go to my computer/manage/Local users and group/Users/double click on Administrator i see the "Account is disabled" check box checked??

Thanks in advance and sorry for my ignorance, i just need a clear and easy explanation for this because i have a lot installing to do (Audio plugins and softwares) and i think i need to be clear about this...

I'm attempting to copy files from one HDD to another. The tens-of-thousands of files in question are in a complex hierarchy system, and windows file copy dialog isn't helping me identify the specific culprits, since many files share names within the hierarchy and the dialog doesn't show the path.

By skipping files to see the many offending files, I see that at least some of them were created by another individual from whom I acquired them. I have already used windows advanced security dialog to grant myself ownership of the parent folder and subfolders and children. Then I used the popular registry addition called Take Ownership Shortcut to attempt to take permission. Neither approach gave any indication of failure, yet I still cannot copy these files.

If it matters, I do not care about taking any action with these files besides copying them to another HDD, because I'll be formatting the source location's drive afterwards. I am at a loss - the message I receive informs me that I need permission from Administrator or my own account name, whomever I gave ownership to. (But that's me, obviously.) It's as though, despite owning the file and being logged into that account, I cannot access the culprit files.

Any assistance from others who've seen this specific dilemma before would be greatly appreciated. This is my livelihood I'm dealing with - if these files are lost, I'm out thousands of hours of work. So, safe suggestions first, please.

Many thanks for your time... Read more

I'm unfortunately somewhat computer illiterate, so bear with me as I try to break down the issue I'm encountering.

I use an online database called Verint Impact 360 to gather audio files from a company's call center. I have the Verint codecs (VerintCodecs.exe) installed on my Windows PC which allow me to play the audio files using Windows Media Player. However, when I try to open the files using a customized program designed by my company, I'm unable to play the calls.

We had an IT member that found a way to convert the calls into a usable format with OpenOffice Spreadsheet by renaming the files. Unfortunately, he's since left the company, and I was unable to determine how he was able to convert the calls.

So, I guess my question is: Is there some way to embed the codec into the call file so that it could be played on other platforms?

Summary: -The calls are in .wav format -I have installed on the computer VerintCodecs.exe -I can only play the audio files in Windows Media Player (I've tried on the customized program and VLC, neither of which work)

I would greatly appreciate if someone could give me some guidance.

A:Solved: Playing audio files that require a codec in programs other than Windows Media

If VLC will not play the files, then they are not the usual format of a .wav file
However, playing WAV files on VLC is rather effortless. That’s because VLC comes equipped with the digital programming that instructs it how to handle data sent via the WAV format. Here’s a step-by-step procedure for playing WAV files on the VLC.
1) After you have downloaded and installed the VLC player, open the VLC media player.
2) The VLC media player will display on your screen. On the menu bar, click on “Media.”
3) A drop-down window appears. Click on “Open File” and navigate to the location of the WAV file.
4) Click on the file in the “Select one or more files to open” window or once you are in the folder that the file is located in, type the name of the file in the “File name” window.
5) Click on the “Open” button. The file will load and the VLC media player will begin playing it automatically.

I'm trying to install Renaissance Starter Edition, but the program just unpacks the files somewhere, and doesn't actually start the installation routine. I tried it at work, and it started installing, but on my PC at home, it unpacks the files, then nothing. It goes that fast, I don't know what the files are, or where it's put them. Any suggestions?

I've downloaded a large application (Quicken) in .rar format. I extracted it with Winrar and now I have 18 tidy little bundles of 15mb each in the intended directory. Bad news is I haven't the faintest idea what to do with them now. there aren't any .exe or installation files as far as I can see--just those 18 bundles. Can anyone straighten me out?

Hello everyone
It's a long time since I don't write an article in MA but I decided to explore some important concepts to analyze malware.

"Understanding packers and detecting a packed file" is a topic treated by @kram7750 in this thread :http://malwaretips.com/threads/malw...ng-packers-and-detecting-a-packed-file.42356/

I will talk to unpacking
The manual unpacking is definitely the most complex to learn. Although a malware can be sometimes much more difficult by a packer, it is much easier to explain the theory behind a malware, rather than explain the operation of a packer. This is primarily due to two reasons. First, you need to have a unpacking knowledge of a wider number of arguments: it is not enough to understand the machine code and know that debugging. In addition, the term "packer" is very generic. The packer implement all sorts of anti-reversing techniques and even an entire book would suffice to explain them all in detail.

I will try to make myself understood even by those who don't have a clue what a packer. However, it is useless to deny that you have to engage, and not just to see this introduction. Do not confuse, even if there are other threads, this article represents the real end of our route. If you include the following, all the rest you'll learn without difficulty and it will update your knowledge base package. Here, we define the article on manual unpacking the culmination of knowledge. To write this introd... Read more

I recently ordered a new PC from ironsidecomputers and it didn't work when I plugged it in, I later pulled the front connectors loose replugged them and was able to get it running but the reset powered it on power button reset the system. I was happy but PC was in the wrong spot so I turned it off put it where it need to be and nothing I tried all other outlets then the one that worked previously but nothing. I referred to manual and seemed original set up was wrong but I'm not getting to work in the right set up. What am I doing wrong is it just power problem? I would be talking to tech but it's the weekend. A:PC has no power after unpacking

Sounds like to me the front panel connection is hooked up wrong, which could do some damage to the system over time. If your not comfortable taking it apart and reconnecting all if it, I'd wait and take it back to the place where you bought it and have them look at it and fix it.

I have just replaced my old desktop for a new one that comes with windows 7 64 bit. But not sure why ever since I started using the new desktop to unpack rars and especially rars with parts, both winrar and 7zip often have error messages like:

"Packed data CRC failed"
"The volume is corrupted"
"The file is corrupted"
etc.

For example, one of my family member who lives in Ireland wants to send me a bunch of videos and photos taken from a trip they went. He packed these bunch of files into three part rars and uploaded onto a file hosting website and so I have to download each one of them. I first tried jdownloader and downloaded them but couldn't unzip it. Then I tried to download in the normal way using firefox but still couldn't unpack. And I started to think is the pack corrupted?

But then I tried to use my netbook (with win7 32 bit starter os) and downloaded the files through this computer, it unpacked smoothly without a hassle. I then tried to copy the files I have downloaded using my new desktop to my netbook and try to unpack them there but again it saids the file is corrupted. That means somehow it's not winrar or 7zip's problem but the way my new computer writes the files into the hard disk creates corrupted files?

So what's wrong with my new computer? Even my old desktop won't have these problems. Is it because of the 32 64 bit difference? Perhaps my Ireland cousin packed the files with winrar 32 bit and i used 64 bit didn't work? Or ... Read more

A friend of mine went to a yahoo personal profile & went into one of there briefcases, instantly he saw pictures, then it took him directly to a pornographic site. When he hit the Close button it directly took him to another porno website and they kept appearing faster than he could close them. So today I get on the computer & go to explorer & in my C:\Documents and Settings\Jolene\Start Menu there is 2 short cuts labeled ( words I 'd rather not post) I didn't open them I just went to properties got the file names and did a search for those files.

here is the info I retrieved

Size 635 KB
Size on disk 672 KB
16 files/ 5 folders

Size 583 KB
Size on disk 612
15 files / 5 folders

I instantly did a virus scan and found nothing. So what are these files & how do I get rid of them?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

A:Very Large files, what are they

Please do this. Go here http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

Do NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

We have three PC's, one running XP Pro and the other two XP Home (all SP3). All have IE7 with Google toolbars, all have Acrobat Reader v.8. The two with XP Home can download a full PDF file of any size and read the whole thing in the browser without problems. The one with XP Pro won't do that - it downloads (say) the first 0.5 MB of the file and gets no further. IE7 displays the bit of the PDF it's got, but stops responding and has to be shut down from the Task Manager. Right clicking and "Save target as.." works fine. I've used the work round of disabling "View in Browser" in Adobe Reader, but the behaviour seems very odd indeed and baffles me! It's quite consistent on any PDF file greater than about 0.5MB.

Has anyone else encountered this and found a solution, other than disabling "browser view" as I have done?

I did some data recovery and pulled over 8 million "files" from an external HD.

Searching 'mp3' and 'doc' I verified there are many valid files on my internal drive.

However, when I try to copy them back the window disappears after about 5 minutes of "preparing to copy" and there is nothing on the drive when I look.

It feels like my system is getting bogged down because of the absurd # of files! I can't even right click -> properties to see exactly how many are on there. It starts going really slow and I get impatient after about 8 million.

Welcome windows especially 64 bit can handle huge amounts file/folder/ the slowdown may be either it is using up your memory or maybe the hard drive cant keep up. You could either use Acronis or ghost to back them up to one space. Or failing that try doing it in small chunks.;

This is a short video clip that a friend shot from his digital camera and put on a CD that I then saved on my hard drive. It plays fine on my computer so I can't figure out why I can't send it as an attachment on the e-mail. Can anyone help, hopefully with step by step instructions? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I recently experienced some problems with my computer and when I set up a Nova Backup to my external drive I noticed some files on my C drive that I hadn't seen before. Since they had a date and time stamp exactly at the time my problem occurred (9/8 11:55am), I was worried about them. They have now changed to 9/17 and I have seen some reference to them when I googled them, so I guess they're legit but I'm still not clear what they are about. Seems odd I never noticed them before when I set up a backup.

The files are:
hiberfil.sys 6.6GB
pagefil.sys 1.3GB
swapfil.sys 2.6MB

Could you please explain these and when they change and what they are used for?

Thank you!

A:Copying many large files to USB HD, how to que up?

Hi bonkboy,

Welcome to TSG!

The easiest thing to do is write a script.

Let's assume that writing scripts is new or that you do not know how to write one.

Here is an example of a script (Note - since I don't know what OS you are running, this script may not work on your particular OS or any OS due to errors in the script, but it will give you an idea of how to do what you want as a first cut):

#! /bin/sh
# name of script is: copyscript.sh
todir=$1
fromdir=$2
filelist=`ls -1 $1 $fromdir`
for i in $filelist
cp $i $todir
end
exit

Note: $1 and $2 are the first and second parameters passed into the script from the command line.

You would first need to make the script executable:
$ chmod +x copyscript.sh

Then you would need to invoke the script, as follows:
$ ./copyscript.sh <todir> <fromdir>
where you would replace todir without the brackets (<>) with the full pathname to the folder aka directory where the USB HD is mounted, and, similarly, replace fromdir without the brackets (<>) with the full pathname to the folder aka directory where the files to be copied are currently located.

You can start here to learn about Shell Scripting and go from there according to your system (Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix).

Just about every time I try to permanently delete a large file or folder, either by shift/delete or emptying the recycle bin the operation hangs up.

The little window opens and it counts up the size of the file and that it. Nothing else overtly happens. The status bar never starts indicating and the window just sits there with the little green lights chasing each other across it. If I try to cancel or close the window it nothing happens.

During the time all this is going on, I can hit ctrl/alt/del and select Task Manager and it simply goes back to the desktop with this window still squatting there doing it's thing. I have pinned TM to the task bar and tried starting it from there but it never starts. Eventually everything just slows to a stop and nothing works which would seem to indicate some kind of memory leak. There are no error messages during any of this.

I have to hit reset and restart the computer that way in order to regain control and we all know how bad an idea this is. I've already had my boot sector eaten once causing me to have to do a total rebuild and I'd prefer not to have to do it again. Any ideas what I can look for here?

Edit: Forgot to mention that when I do get the computer restarted the file or folder I was attempting to get rid of is usually gone so the operation itself is taking place. I'm just not getting my computer back when it's done.

You shouldn't need more RAM particularly as you can set aside more disc space for the computer to work with. If you find it really slow upadting the data in your Workbook then it would suggest that you could do with some more.
I only have the same RAM as you and I have had 2 or 3 Eight Meg Excel workbooks open at the same time as well as working on this forum.

A:E-mailing Large Files .. please help

Define large.

Some e-mail client software allows you break-up large files and then attaches the pieces to individual e-mails messages. The recipients then need their e-mail software to put the pieces back together.

You can also use a service like www.yousendit.com. You upload the file to their server and then you send people a link to download the file.

As most people know, recorded video files can be huge, larger than the capacity of the recycle bin. It has been my experience that files that are too big for the recycle bin are purged directly from the hard disk. I have experimented with recovering such files but have had no success. Does anyone know if it is possible to recover these files and if so what is the process. most software I have tried only shows those files deleted from the recycle bin. I can find no useful reference to recovering large files on the web.

A:Recovering large files

There is some "data recovery software"<---google out there that can retrieve such a file but there will be data loss and offhand I don't know of a free software that's up to the task. Any of the ones you have to pay for well even if they have a trial the have filesize restrictions until software is licensed.

Hello everyone,

I have recently started using iPhone with Windows 7, and I *think* that some of the videos and photos transferred from iPhone to Windows 7 HDD may be using up much of my HDD space.

Besides the obvious: Checking each file and folder for size and contents, is there a 'performance program' that will identify the larger files on a drive? (FWIW, I recall seeing this as an option one a program I have used in my computer 'travails' over the years.)

Thanks a bunch for any input!

A:How do I identify large files on my HDD?

Take a look at WinDirStat. It will show you a graphical view of your entire disk usage and you will be able to see what folders and files are using the most disk space.

It seems that almost every time I download a file over 300MB, it is corrupted when I try to use it. This mostly affects zips, rars, and game demos, so I imagine it might have something to do with compressed filetypes. I get the errormessage saying that the files are corrupt, and to try downloading it again. So I do, from the same location, and then from another location. Same problems. I just ran Ad-aware, Spybot, and SpySweeper, but the problem has persisted.

It's just downloaded files that don't work, and seems to be limited to compressed files (but that may just be because you don't often download anything bigger that's not in a rar).

I figure someone's going to ask for a HijackThis log, so here you go:
