hello all

l just bought a new motherboard that lam gonna install in a new computer case as an upgrade. l was looking at the manual that comes with it about the jumper settings.
Even though it has the right configuration printed on it (and this is the same settings that are actually in the mother board there there is something in the manual that confuses me.

"It is required that users place the USBPWR_F & USBPWR_R cap onto
2-3 pin rather than 1-2 pin as default if you want to wake up the computer
by USB/PS2 KB/Mouse".

What does this mean?

- Do l have to change the jumpers to the 2-3 pins so the can work??
-or this is an extra suggested setting?
-Should l just leave the jumpers where they are and go ahead and install the motherboard?

l really don know what to do. As l mentioned before the board is brand new.

all comments will be greatly appreciated.

A:About motherboard jumper configuration

its nothing man, just leave it as it is, that is for the power settings in the bios, no one really uses them, just leave them as they are and it will work.
and if you wanted to power on by usb, i think it has to have its own powersupply.

Jumper don't have any cables, they are only little pieces to short two pins. You find in your motherboards manual which jumper it is.

title says it all. found a deal on the 6800XT for less than the 6600GT. worth it, anyone??

A:quick reply, if possible- is 6800XT better than 6600GT?

The 6800 series still beats the 6600 series. However the XT is a budget card and the GT is not.

However, some people said you can mod the 6800xt to get the extra pipelines and make it run just like a 6800gt, but I can't be sure. It might be better to get the 6600gt for future resale value, as budget cards don't sell well. But then, you could buy the XT and maybe mod it, although it still may be a small measure better then the 6600gt.

And then again, a 6800GT may not be that much price difference from the XT, being that the 7800 cards are out and pushing prices down. Save for the GT if you can.

That's my take, but some here know more about nvidia cards then I do.

I was thinking to my self when i was sleeping. And i decided to take this risk i wanna see what you guys think.

So heres the story i was having problems with my computer, i re-ran the motherboard drivers all was well, and because the screen was still screwy i uninstalled the video drivers (Graphics card drivers) and it told me to restart my computer. To my unknowing it disabled my mouse and keyboard for some reason. So i did my homework and looked around the net for a fix.
Most people have told me to run a recovery from the boot disk. (The operating system disk) But its a custom computer and i don't have it.

Because of this i was thinking how about i try this instead?
Buy a WinXP Pro SP2 Operating System, partishin it then take all of my data off the first HDD and place it on my second one. Then go back and delete the partishin that i made on the first one and delete it clearing ALL the data off of my computer leaving it clean for a fresh install of the motherboard, display or graphics card drivers, re-set my router, etc. The whole 9 yards.

The reason I'm trying this is because if i put two OS's on one drive would it enable my mouse to work to a point to where i can take off all my data and place it on the second drive. Then after putting it back on the first. When the first is fully updated, etc.

As for other questions if i partishin it will it take off all the data on my HDD anyway?

Here are my specs.

If you're looking for someone to bless the use of an expensive graphics card with a marginal power supply, you've probably come to the wrong place.

If the PSU fails due to being run close to its rated specs for too long, it can take most of the rest of the system with it.

Ok right, today i wanted to format my old HDD to maybe use it as a backup disk for my work. I took out my HDD i already have in my pc and replaced it with my old one. I entered windows setup and deleted the partion.
Turned off my pc, put in my new HDD (it has windows xp sp2 already installed and i've used it for around 2months now). Before it gets to the user screen it goes to bluescreen and i have to restart my computer. It DID work in safemode etc etc.
I also tried to repair the HDD using the windows disc, this didnt work. I dont know if this adds to it but i restared my computer accidently when it booted into windows setup again (was going to repair it for a second time). Now i cant even go into safe mode 'Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now.' is what is in the error box i get at startup. Repairing does nothing and i'm out of ideas!

Is there any possible way to fix this without formating? Thanks alot!

Hey guys, Just got a new Acer Aspire Laptop today, and thanks to Acer's upgrade plan I will be getting my free Windows 7: HE within a few weeks

But I'm dying to use this new amazing Laptop now, I already bought Windows 7: HE for the laptop I'm currently using, and with it I ordered a back up disk

I know you can install Windows 7 directly from the Back up disk as a friend of mine had to use that method when her downloaded file didn't work for her

So can I use the same back up disk, to install Windows 7 on my new Acer Aspire which has Windows Vista Home Premium

Hoping you guys can reply to me ASAP :)

A:Using Windows 7 Backup Disk to Install on a New Machine (Please quick reply)

This question is best addressed with the Acer tech support - as it involves decisions about the interpretation of the EULA. Additionally, it depends on the way that Acer implements the insertion of the product key for Win7.

So heres my question..im faily new to overclocking.
Iv read a bunch of guides to help me overclock a bit

I managed to get my cpu from stock 3.6ghz to 4.0ghz with 1.45V

Im currently running prime95 to che k for sta bility

Been 20m and cpu is at 64 degreed

My question however is that im a bit confused abouy something...the way i overclocked it i increased the multiplier by small incriments then when the system crashed i increased voltage(assuming thats the correct way)...anyways my cpu bus frequency is still at 200mhz...i read that the cpu bus frequency is speed at which cpu comunicates with memory or something like that...im curiouse to know how overcloking a cpu increases performance even if the cpu frequency is still at 200mhz(stock)...???.....or did i overclock wrong?....

Sry if this is in wrong thread

A:quick overclocking question

There are two methods of overclocking;
1 Up the multiplier [which you did]
2 Up the front side bus

Upping the mulit only overclocks the cpu. Upping the fsb will overclock the cpu, ram, and the pci bus [and anything installed in the pci bus ie sound card, nic card, etc]

With a stock speed of 3.6, I assume that is a 975. I think you have about achieved the highest overclock you are going to be able to get. The last in a cpu line usually has the least ability to overclock [the mfg has already gotten just about all there is to get out of the design]

Hi, just a few questions about overclocking, or just simply setting up the correct CPU settings.

Ok, I have and xp 3000+ (333mhz FSB), so I set the cpu thing in the bios to 166mhz, which should be synchrozied at a 1:1 ratio with PC2700 (333mhz) RAM? What happens if the RAM clock speed is higher than the FSB of the cpu?, the ratio then is offset, is that bad?

I have a machine with a 2100+ AMD XP, would that have a 266mhz fsb? If so then I should set the cpu thing in the bios to 133mhz? and use pc2100 (266mhz) RAM?
My question is mainly about synchronization between the cpu and the ram. Is it bad to have pc3200 RAM on a machine with an amd xp cpu with only a 333mhz FSB, not 400?

Thanks

A:a few quick overclocking questions

No the 3200 will work fine unless the motherboard doesn't support it. If you are really that concerned though, I have a gig of 2700 I'll swap you for it. Stick for stick

A:Quick help with an overclocking novice....

Here's a huge tip: do not play around with the voltages if you can't afford to buy a new comp

Oh yeah, keep an eye on your temps. Make note on whats normal, and try to keep it at normal or less. Buy a new HSF combo if you need to, there's some really good ones for cheap these days.

Careful with the RAM tho, not sure how much torture they can take. Also not sure of how to minimise problems there, overclock it slowly, any signs of instability, back off.

I was thinking about overclocking my new pc and i have never done this before so i was wondering if it's ok to overclock by only 100 to 200 MHz without having to install additional cooling systems or change things like RAM speed/voltage? Also, would overclocking by the above amount have any negative effect on the processor?

My system:
MOBO: MSI K9N Neo
PROCESSOR: AMD Athlon X2 4200+ (Dual Core 4.4GHz) (hoping to OC to 4.6GHz or 4.8GHz)
RAM: 1024MB DDR2 667MHz Corsair

Also, there are two fans in my system (1 for CPU and 1 for case) and the processor's average temp is about 42'c when not doing much and 50'c when playing games.

A:Quick Overclocking Question

HAH! 50= you already need better cooling, so if your gunna OC you dang better have liquid cooling, and GOOD liquid cooling

so you need to not OC till you change something up there

I myself kinda stick with Intel but, I 'd have to say the Amd system looks better here especially cause your "smart" and don't mess with the OC thing!
I am not into gaming much, yet but- almost all the benchmarks I have seen show that processor a bit better at gaming marks.
The ram is a big thing too if you decide to try out Vista later when its been bugged out a bit. My next build might be AMD when I see the newer chips come out, my sons who I built is a nice puter, I'm jealous, his cpu- purrrsssss.....

I know this will have been asked many times before but what the hell...

Recently purchased a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. Havent bought any Antivirus software, would like to get some for free.

Have been recommended AVG and ZoneAlarm. I would like to double check with people here if these two are fine to work together on Vista along with Defender and Windows Firewall.

Whilst searching the forums for this, I noticed a thread saying if your wireless router has its own firewall you dont really need another firewall except for Windows Firewall. Is this recommended? The same thread also said the user had difficulties with Vista and ZoneAlarm. Is ZoneAlarm's free firewall compatible with Vista?

Again, sorry if these questions have already been asked (I have tried searching) but this is a new laptop and I dont want to screw anything up after a day.

Thanks in advance

I just did a full backup of c: using macrium free, and all went well.

The image was stored to an external "My Book" drive and after closing macrium upon the image creation, I can't seem to safely eject the external. I get the following message:

I'm sure a reboot would allow me to eject it, but i'm curious what the proper way would be.

edit:
Macrium is fully closed
I don't see any processes running that are macrium related with "show processes from all users" used

A:Quick Macrium Free question

Neither Process Monitor or Process Explorer returned any results when filtering for the USB drive letter...

   Warning
Stealing, hacking and pirating software is wrong. The following advice is for personal use on files you own and have forgotten the password to only!

Try RAR Password Cracker - Recovery (crack) of lost RAR/WinRAR passwords.

It might take a while but it'll get the job done.

Hi, there, I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this:I recently changed my hard drive, as my old one was dying. Now, after I formatted, etc., & ran avast quick scan, the scans have been taking about 1 & 1/2 hrs, & scanning approx. 97 GBs. Previously on my old HD, it would take approx. 1 hr. to scan, & about 53 GBs of data would be tested.I have approx. the same amount of data stored as on my old HD(106GBs or so). My new HD is also the same size as my old one.Any thoughts on this? I had stopped using the full scan, as it was taking way long when avast came out with the 2014 version, but then, that's beside the point. It is driving me batty(the long scan times for the quick scan), and I am almost ready to change antivirus programs!!!I would appreciate some input, or any experience anyone is having with avast now? Thank you!!!

Hey there, i am having a problem with my Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset - the microphone doesn't want to work... oddly. I have tried the sound setting but it doesn't seem to work.
I started of by going to Sound > Recording > then it says three thing:
Microphone .... with a tick beside it ... working
Microphone FP .... Not Plugged in (When it clearly is)(Headset comes with detachable Mic)
Digital In... working.

Also when i try fiddle with the setting to enable the microphone it does not let me "configure" it .... and when i try set up the microphone it doesn't want to start up unless i disable the microphone it would say "Wizard could not start"

My Microphone is not on mute and the the jacks are correctly colour coded in place.
My sound Cards is : Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic

It the one with the detachable microphone - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128208

A Basic Guide to Overclocking

Before we begin, there are some things you need to understand;

1 There is NO safe overclocking. All overclocking involves some degree of risk.

2 There is no guarantee of an overclock. Just because someone else was able to OC the same cpu as you have to 3.6gig is NO guarantee you will be able to achieve the same overclock.

3 No overclock is worth anything unless it is a stable overclock. If it is not prime95 stable, it is NOT a stable overclock

4 Do not ask how much you can overclock your XXX cpu. There is no answer to this until you test in a systematic manner. It is like asking how long is a rope? You do not know until you measure it.

5 Do not ask about overclocking your dell, hp, gateway, compaq or other big box system. It is not going to happen. Just about ALL big box systems come with a bios that does not have overclocking options.

6 Chuck’s rule. Do not overclock with parts you cannot afford to replace.

If you are comfortable with the above, we can continue to attempt a stable OC of your system. The very first thing I would like you to do is read your manual. Become familiar with the bios menus and where settings are located. Each bios [and even each bios revision] can differ as to where settings are located. Giving you detailed instructions on where to find a given setting is just about impossible.

Next issue; the quality of your parts. A stable OC is highly dependent on the quality of your parts. Do not buy an ECS mothe... Read more

A:A Basic Guide to Overclocking. Read before posting Overclocking Questions

Tom’s Hardware readers know all about overclocking, of course. In fact, many processor and graphics card reviews would be deemed incomplete without coverage of overclocking potential. Indeed, articles such as the System Builder Marathon series have a long history of specifically valuing performance achieved through overclocking rather than just through stock performance.

If you already consider yourself an enthusiast, pardon a bit of background here--we'll get into the nitty-gritty technical stuff in just a second.

What exactly is overclocking? In a nutshell, the term is used to describe running a component at a higher speed than its specification in an attempt to increase performance. Various computer components can be overclocked, including the processor, memory, and graphics card. And the degree of overclocking can include anything from simply procuring small gains from an inexpensive component all the way to seeking a level of performance way beyond what could even be purchased at that point in time.

Do I set the jumper on my HD from my desktop to slave or do I set it to cable select?

I have a Toshiba Infinia 7200. The current position for the Jumper of the O.E. CD-ROM is the second or center set of pins. I assume this is the Master position as th User Manual indicates that the hard drive and the cd-rom drive are primary drives.

I want to install a newly purchased CD-RW drive and make it the Master and the O.E. drive the slave but it is indicated on the CD-RW drive that the third position is the Master. Does anyone know which is the Slave and which is the Cable Select position on the O.E. drive?

Any guidance or help would be appreciated.

A:CD-ROM Jumper positions

Firstly, there is no "standard" layout for master/slave/CS settings on drives, so the "positional" clues do not hold true across different models.

Secondly, device manager will tell you if the existing drive is connected primary or secondary IDE (0) or (1) and if it is device Master (0) or Slave (1)

Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - DVD/CD Rom Drives - right click and select Properties.

Greetings

I am running Win98SE.

I have a 10G hard drive = C
I added an 80G hard drive = D

I then copied everything from the C drive to the D drive. (All but 13 files transferred. I did not keep a record of those 13.)

I want to use the new D drive as my bootable drive and primary drive. Eventually, I would Fdisk the C and use it for storage.

After the data transfer I changed the jumper settings to make the D drive the master and the C drive the slave.

When I went to power up I got nothing other than a black screen. I then shut down and rejumpered to get to startup and the net.

1) Either I missed something and need to do more than the jumper settings, or, 2) I really need some of those 13 uncopied and nonexistent files on my D drive.

Any thoughts and assistance would be appreciated.

gazz496,

By all means remove the jumper. Your motherboard supports the SATA 3.0 Gbit/s standard.

There will certainly be a performance increase. How much your actually feel is another story. You could run a benchmark before and after to get an absolute sense of the performance gain. Vista will not complain at all and nothing else will need to be done on your part.

I am assembling a PC for the first time, and am having the "does not POST" problem. I've read through some previous threads here (googling the problem is how I discovered this website), and I THINK I have everything set up correctly, except for the CMOS jumper.

I've found the place on the motherboard where the plugs go, but I can't find anything to plug in there. Is this something that would be coming from the case?

The only thing coming from the case that isn't already plugged in is a bundle of four plugs, two three-prong and two single-prong. The three-prong plugs are numbered 1 and 2 and are labeled GROUND, +D, and -D. The single-prongs (also numbered 1 and 2) are labeled +5V. I thought this bundle was for the front USB ports, but I could be wrong.

In case it matters, the specs are:

Board: MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2GHz
Video: MSI NX6600 AGP 8x
RAM: 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR 400 (currently only one installed, to cut down on the variables of the problem)

All of these components are brand new. The power, case, hard drive and floppy disc are inherited from the previous system.

Other things I've checked based on other techspot threads:

Both power connectors are plugged in.
The RAM is in the right slot and well-seated. I've tried booting up with each chip in the #1 slot, with the same result. So either they aren't the problem, or both RAM chips are bolluxed.

Tipically the "clear cmos" is 3 pins with a 2 pin jumper.
pin 1&2 clear the cmos and pin 2&3 is default.
There are boards that have pin jumpers that need to change
inorder to flash the bios.
Look in your manual page 2-24
The motherboard provides the following jumpers for you to set the computer?s
function. This section will explain how to change your motherboard?s function through
the use of jumpers.

MSI Reminds You...
You can clear CMOS by shorting 2-3 pin while the system is off.
Then return to 1-2 pin position. Avoid clearing the CMOS while the
system is on; it will damage the mainboard.
Clear CMOS Jumper: JBAT1
There is a CMOS RAM on board that has a power supply from external battery
to keep the system configuration data. With the CMOS RAM, the system can automatically
boot OS every time it is turned on. If you want to clear the system

I have an HP 750n.
It came with a dvdrom and cd burner.
I have replaced the burner with a DVD burner.
Following HP's manual for replacing an optical drive, I set the jumper to the cable select position.

I want to get the firmware upgrade for my DVD burner because even though the box says 4x, it will not burn at 4x.
Depending on the version I need, it says to either have it set as master alone or slave alone. I have to take my computer apart first to determine which version I need.

Since HP says to have the burner jumper set to CS and LG says that I can damage the drive by not following their instructions what do I do?

A buddy of mine has never heard of anyone ever using the CS position.

I also have a new hard drive to install. Once again the HP manual says to use the CS jumper setting. Do I? Don't I? Will I ever need to update firmware for a hard drive?

That looks like a jumper in the "shipping" position. I have seen maxtor and WD drives ship like that. I would place the jumper on the drive you are installing in the master position.

I assume that will be the only device on that ide channel.

I just put a HIS Radeon HD 5600 in my nVidia MCP78v/S/U Chipset mbo.

I want to set it up for HDMI but can't find the jumper on the mbo. Can anyone help? The spec on the mbo tells me but I can't find it phyically.

A:HDMI jumper?

That is only needed for Nvidia cards that support audio over HDMI, and have a SPDIF header on them. All AMD cards from the HD 2xxx series and up all have their own built-in audio chip (Realtek audio actually), so no need for it. The driver for it gets installed at the same time when you install the video driver when installing using the full Catalyst suite.

I have an MSI MS-6334 (815M Pro) mobo.I saw that it had a number of extra jumper settings which were not indicated in the manual. Can you tell me what these do or point me to a place where these can be found.

P.S:I also checked the online manual from MSI website and Motherboards.org.They are the same.

A:Hidden Jumper Settings

I believe you will find that they are strctly for board setup and if you move any of them your board will Not function. Also some are used to set voltages for different things like the cpu and if set wrong will burn out something on the board.

I would get a hold of the manuals then, look for them online at the manufacturer support site. there really should be some sticker or engraved letters ie CS, SL, M near the jumpers some where.

Hi!

I just installed XP Profession on a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive . . . but I must have gotten the jumper wrong. It's installed, but all it's showing is 32GB!

If I shut down and change the jumpers to show my 250GB, is that all I have to do? Or will I have to repartition it? Or what? Yikes? Or should I just change the jumper settings, and then reinstall XP?

Thanks for whatever suggestions you can give me.

xico

A:Got the jumper settings wrong

A really old bios would give that problem, but I would guess that there is a jumper on the drive (not the usual master/slave one) that is limiting its size.
Edit: Using FAT32 would do it also.

I am looking for jumper settings and/or specs. for an Octek Rhino6 motherboard.
An older system that may brighten an older person's day!

A:Jumper setting - old board

We'll probably need more information on the motherboard than that but you might try this link to see if its listed http://www.octek.com.au/

If not, let me know and I'll see what I can find. I will need to know the type(socket 7, Slot 1 etc...) and any markings on the board for Revision number.

Good Luck

so i have a Comstar Platinum 250GB external hard drive (EXOT250G). it connects via USB. i opened it up the other day, just to see what was inside, and found a segate barracuda 7200.10 SATA HDD.

First, is this a good HDD?

second, on the label i found instructions on how to connect the drive to the sata cables, etc. but i also noticed that under the Jumper block illustration it had a diagram showing how to place a jumper in the jumper block.

something like this: (~~ is the jumper) [i tried to take a pic but my phones camera is **** ]
______
|- -~ ~| - limit to 1.5 Gb/s Operation
______
|- - - -| - 3 Gb/s Operation

now my drive is set up to limit to a 1.5 Gb/s operation. if i take the jumper off, so that it operates at 3Gb/s, will this make my drive faster? or is the USB 2.0 transfer rate not that fast? (i do use it as an external HDD and have it connected by USB 2.0)

A:External HDD jumper block

USB 2.0 max data rate = 480 Mbit/s = 60 MB/s

Going by that, leave jumper on and be happy.

Connect drive to SATA II port, entirely different story.

Hello again,

I'm experiencing a problem with a 200mhz computer running win95. I just installed a 5400 rpm, 18(20) gig WD hard drive as the only device on the cable, and a DVD/CD-R drive as the slave on another cable using the CD ROM drive as a master.

After Reinstalling win95 on the hard drive and REPLACING THE AUDIO CABLE (WHICH WAS ATTACHED TO THE MODEM, and CONNECTED TO THE CD-ROM DRIVE) WITH A DIFFERENT AUDIO CABLE that had 2 plugs (one for each CD drive), I tried to have windows auto detect my modem. It couldn't find one, even though it is obviously still there.

Does this have anything to do with replacing the audio cable? I'm thinking about installing Win98 over Win95, but would like to know if there is anything I should do beforehand to prevent any further problems.

okay i've had a new computer setup for the last month or so. the only old parts im still using is the case, power supply, and the DVD drives.

the problem is that while playing on a beta game i suffered a crash to the desktop, sent in the windows survey, then started the game back up. while loading my whole computer just went dead. clicking the power button did nothing.

looking futher into it i noticed the onbaord ethernet lights still had power so i figured it prob. wasnt the power supply but didnt rule it out as a possiblity. next i thought it could be the jumpers since the case was old or maybe the new motherboard just had bad jumpers.

is there a way to test the jumpers without using the case ones? think my friend mentioned satrting his computer up with a screwdriver before.

any ideas?

A:jumper problems, or motherboard?

also a quick note i still get a lil juice from the PSU. turned the fans on for a quick second before cutting out. on another try it turned a monitor on then dead again. perhaps it is just the death of another PSU.

i got sata disk with windows 7 on it,and ide disk...i changed jumper on ide to master..?? now in bios, ide configuration ,onboard ide controller is enabled, serial ata devices are mark as "device0/1" .(i have sata dvd/rw and sata disk)..is that ok.... problem is when starting pc ,after changing jumper from cable select to master, althought its only ide device ,my pc takes time about 30 sec to list all devices....what to do to solve it and still leave ide as master..thx!

A:master jumper ide disk

Why did you change it from Cable Select? What is the make a and model of the drive? some older IDE drives had a Jumper for Master Single and no Jumper for Master w/Slave, or vice versa.

Hello!

I have this IBM Deskstar 20GB HDD, model: IC35L020AVER07-0, PN 07N6652, courtesy of my good bud Tee-dub (thx again dude!)

The one problem is: it has double jumpers and 8 pins instead of the usual 6. As can bee seen in the picture below, there are many possible settings and I am not familiar with them all. I want to use this as either Master on IDE 0, or Slave on IDE 1. Is anybody familiar with IBM HDDs? I am having a hard time trying to find detailed jumper setting instructions online.
