Paths changing in VLookups (Excel)

Q: Paths changing in VLookups (Excel)

There is an Excel App on our network that gets used by multiple users. In this app there are some VLookups that pull information from other spreadsheets. The problem we are having is that the physical paths in the VLookups are being changed to relative paths. Instead of using L:\Files\somefile.xls it changes to \\server\share\somefile.xls.

When this happens the VLookup stops working, it's odd because both paths are legetimate but only the one with the physical path works. This is happening on several different spreadsheets and the formulas have to continualy remapped.

All users are using Office 97 but the OS are mixed, Win ME, 2000 and 98. Any ideas?

Here are the Vlookups:

=VLOOKUP($C18,'L:\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

=VLOOKUP($C18,'\\server01\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

Hi, Tal. I suspected, so I confirmed with someone else here at work, that your users have drives mapped differently and they really need to be the same.

I have a "scorecard" that I use to rank helpdesk analysts based on performance, and make note of the "top 3" analysts for the time period.

The problem I am having is that if two analysts are "tied" for 1st or 2nd place, the next place (2nd or 3rd) shows up as "#N/A" - meaning there is no 2nd or 3rd place, since Excel's "Rank" function can display more than one "2nd place", then skip 3rd place, etc...

If I have a 1st place, and 2 2nd place analysts (skipping 3rd place); how can I incorporate a "=IF(ISNA)" into a VLOOKUP to show one of the 2nd place people in the 2nd place position, and the other 2nd place person as "3rd place".

Hello! I recently upgraded my computer with an SSD for boot and main programs and use my 1TB HDD for general programs and media storage. The thing is I want it to by default install to my D:\ drive.

Now the only solution I see is editing the registry ProgramFilesDir - Which has some serious flaws. It will attempt to launch every program off of the D:\ drive even when it is stored on C:\ and about 9 out of 10 times, it still default installs to C:\.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Hi friends!

I'm experiencing a very strange bug with a custom library. On the odd occasion when I open an explorer pane and navigate to my library on the left-hand side, two of my included folders - which are both located in 'C:\Program Files\...' will change to a non-existent 'C:\Program Files (x86)\...' version of the same folder. If I click on that folder in the library pane it will tell me the folder doesn't exist.

It happens infrequently but often enough to be annoying. It's not immediately clear what causes it or why it stops. When it happened just now I closed all open explorer panes and opened a new one, and the library displayed the correct 'non x86' folder structure.

Any idea what causes this and how it can be avoided?

I have a program that plays music on VB 2008 Express Edition. It accesses music from my memory stick because I'm going to need to move the program to another computer. However, the memory stick was always listed under the J:\ drive, but now randomly it's listed under the K:/ drive. Is there a way so that I can just get the music "into" the program so that it can just play the music no matter what computer it is on. P.S. I also need to get this program to run on XP, and the file path is E:\, I'm afraid that since mine changed randomly, the XP computer I'm moving it to will also change randomly.

Please Help!

A:File Paths Changing Randomly

You can change the drive letter by going to Administrative Tools in Control Panel and them going into Computer Management, there is a section called Disk Management which will show all connected drives, from there you can change the drive path.

On my desktop-computer i have shared some folders with my home network. Then i changed their paths, as i reorganized myself. Now it seems, when I acces the network, those folders paths dont seem to be updated, as i cant access them.

I can now of course "unshare", rename and share them again, which makes them again accessible through the network, but the old "folder names" still remain. why is that, how can i correct it?

Same problem with some old "synched folders".

A:shared folder and changing their paths

Curious, where do the old 'folder names' remain? Just in the drop down menu under 'Map network drive ...'?

If so those paths are saved in your registry.

I changed the user name from "user001" to "user888". That changed the name on the login/logout screens. But the user folders and paths all stayed with the old name "user001". As a result some things, like the name installed programs will grab and use, are still called "user001".

Is there a way, short of re-installing Windows, to change all the appropriate folders, paths and registry entries to read "user888" and get rid of the old user name completely?

A:Changing the User Folders (and paths)

You may want to create a new account and move the user files over to that new account. Then delete the old account.

When I first installed Win 7 I simply went with the default user name of "Owner". I wouldn't mind changing it now but I'm concerned about the effect on my shortcuts and so on.

If I rename it, will Windows go through and automatically update all the shortcuts and program paths and so on? My gut reaction is "Of course it will" but I've learned to be cautious with Windows! Will I end up with a lot of tidying up to do?

A:Will changing username mess up paths?

Only the username will be changed. The c:\users\<username> path does not get changed and this can lead to more confusion.

Better method:

1) Create two new accounts. One in the username you want, and one can even call it TEMP if you like.

2) Log in as TEMP. Use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate all files and settings from your old account to the new one you just created.

3) When this is complete, log in as your new user and make sure everything is there and working.

4) Delete your old user and TEMP.

By default, programs install to the same drive that the currently running OS is installed on. What I'm trying to do, is to tell it to install programs to another drive/partition.

This way, if I needed to reformat and reinstall the OS, the bulk of my programs will remain intact.

I've read other forums and they've given skeptical answers to indicate that it can't be done, but I figured I'd pose the question here myself.

A:Automatically changing program install paths

Yea, mostly games are what I had in mind.

I always move the My Documents folder to a completely different physical drive upon each OS installation (I've been reformatting a lot lately due to instablity with recent hardware upgrades).

I've gotten into the habit of keeping multiple, up-to-date copies of select Application Data--most importantly, Firefox browser data. Switching between a laptop and desktop regularly, I also am able to perodically sync the two systems with the same bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords, and the like.

I've heard there's a way to do it remotely with FireFox so you can import them from anywhere, but for this particular purpose I'm more comfortable keeping the information in my grasp.

Here's my story. I've just managed to change a systems boot letter from E:\ to C:\. The machine is working fine now, but all the programs that were installed are still looking in E:\ which no longer exsists. I've gone through and changed a few of these paths manually, but after an hour of that i realised it'll take far too long to do it this way.

What i'm looking for is a tool to look through the registry and replace all instances of "E:\" with "C:\". Does anyone know if such a product is available? It's be a great help.

Thanks in advance

I'm having an issue with Windows Media Player for Windows 7.

I imported a bunch of playlists and their associated music files from an XP machine to my new Win7 machine, and some of the music files aren't playing - Media Player simply says that there was "an error" with no further explanation given, but this error only occurs with files with a certain file path.

On my XP machine a large chunk of my music files were located in C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\My Documents\My Music\[artist name]\[song title] as .wma files. I know that in Win7 the Documents and Settings subdirectory was replaced by Users or something - that's not the real problem, because for all my other music files, the file paths as shown in my WMP playlists will adjust themselves automatically and play the music files correctly no matter where the files are moved. My issue stems from the fact that WMP is not correcting the file paths for the files located in Documents and Settings the way it is for all the other files. There is no way to edit the file paths in WMP, or I would have tried that.

This is not the first time I've moved my XP playlists to a Win7 machine, but on my previous attempts I have had no problem simply copying all my music to one folder and playing them in WMP. So I'm not sure why it's not working this time.

I would prefer to avoid rebuilding all my playlists by hand - I really don't think that should be necessary, since as I said I've moved all my data from an XP to a W... Read more

Hi, new to these forums so I really hope I'm posting this up in the right subforum.

Long story: My old hard drive was dying, and after installing a new one I used this "EaseUS" program to clone the old HDD's data onto the new one. This worked fine except for the fact that all of my shortcuts stopped functioning because the letter assigned to the new HDD was different from the old HDD.

Is there any easy, automatic way of making all shortcuts point to the new file path? Or do I have to manually change the hard drive letter in each shortcut's properties?

I am currently using Skydrive to synchronize files and folders between my home and office computers. I created an Excel file which has hyperlinks linking to files located under the same folder as the Excel file on the local hard disk.
In the past I was using Excel 2010 and the synching would work fine. I would open the excel file in any of the two computers and when I clicked on the hyperlinks the file stored on the local hard disk would open. Recently I purchased Office 360 and suddenly the paths in the hyperlinks linking to the files were changed from a local relative location I.e. \test.xlsx! to a cloud address I.e. On top of that even if I click on the hyperlink the file does not open.
Also Skydrive keeps creating copies of the files at random with the name of the computer where it was modified at the end I.e. test-Home-PC.xlsx.

Anybody know the reason for this and a way around it?

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

Hi there

I have an Excel workbook that I need help with. The following information has been changed to conceal its true nature.

In one worksheet, lets call that the master worksheet, I have a table with information regarding students assignments, there is their student ID, their name, their tutor, and which stream their assignment is for.

Column A = student ID
Column B = student name
Column C = tutor name
Column D = Stream A (cells in this column are either TRUE or FALSE)
Column E = Stream B (cells in this column are either TRUE or FALSE)
Column F = Stream C (cells in this column are either TRUE or FALSE)

I realize you may be wondering why there is not just one column displaying which stream the students are in but I need to work with another Excel sheet that has been inputted into the workbook I am creating, a new input will be used every month.

I then have different worksheets for each Stream. In the worksheet for Stream A, I want Excel to somehow check if against the TRUE/FALSE statement in Column D and then if the statement is TRUE to copy the data from columns A, B, and C

I think this may involve IF and LOOKUP statements but I am not sure

Many thanks and I look forward to a response

I feel like there is a simple answer to my inquiry and I have been trying various configurations that are too complex. I have two worksheets and I want to lookup values from one document based on two criteria from another.

In cell AO6 I have a color listed
In cell H6 I have a thickness listed
I want to automatically enter data based on those two items into cell L60

In a separate worksheet I have the data I need
Column A is colors
Column D is thickness
Column G has the code I want to be input into L60

For example if I look up Blue 1" (out of about 500 rows) I want it to return the code 12349 which will be on the same row. There are going to be other 'blue' colors and other 1" thicknesses, so a straight VLookup won't work. I tried putting a vlookup into an if statement and it just made a mess.

Hi, welcome to the forum,
The problem is that the is too much 'intelligence' built in Excel.
Excel makes it's own intertrepation when enetring a number and if 'it thinks that it's a data' it set the format to date format.

When importing a csv file you can also set the the format general but I don't know how the MAc version does this.
You could Google something like "Excel maintain original fort when reading csv file" and see what that brings you.

You have to thank Miscrosoft for this 'built in intelligence'

I recently changed the DPI setting on my computer. But now all my Office excel spread sheets do not fit within the margins and page breaks they did before the change. I had meticulously entered my data so it fitted exactly page to page, but now it has all changed so pages flow onto the next and exceed the margins.
Even before I made the change, if I emailed my spread sheet to others they could not view it the way I had set it up unless their DPI was exactly the same as mine (eg data not fitting within pages and margins)
Is there some way of overcoming this ? I could changing all my sheets so they now "fit" as I want them to with the changed DPI setting, but it won't alleviate the problem of email recipients being able to view them the way I had set them up.

The Microsoft code isn't build to deal with this many, with good reason, as on making it large enough Excel crashes (at least on my laptop).

How many rows of data do you actual have?
And can I also ask how many columns?

Select the delimiters you want to apply e.g.TABS, NEXT
The 5-2056 should now be shown in its own columnand the heading should say general. If so just click on Finish
It should now be in its own columns and the 5-2056 will appear just as that.

I am beginning to suspect this is not possible. What I want is to have a column with "notes" in which the cells (and the rows with them) expand downwards to accommodate additional text. Can this be done? All the online tutorials just seem to think people want lots of nice additional empty white space at the top of the cells when they change the cell height!

Am I missing something? And can anyone help?

A:Changing cell height in excel 2013

just select text wrap. Column will get longer not wider though. The effect will be visible after you will finish cell editing or of you preformat cell height then all will be as you write (assuming that cell is correctly pre-formatted)

Yes, open the Excel workbook that you want to modify, go to TOOLS then OPTIONS and select the COLOR tab , select a color beside Chart fills then click on Modify. Repeat with each color that you want to modify.

I am trying to use part of a macro to change the active cell to a cell address determined from data entered by the user. For example, a user enters a date, the date is compared to a list of dates and when a match is found the cell address is returned. I want to then make the returned address the active cell. Can this be done and if so how?

You would need to use VB code. I don't think you can record a macro to do you already have a way to find the matching date or do you need help on that part too?

In 2007 I use cell styles a lot when financial modelling, however I create all of mine from scratch and delete all of the default ones. This results in there being a Normal style in "Good, Bad and Neutral" and about 25 other styles in "Custom".Is there any way to:1. Change the name of the existing categories of Cell Style?2. Add a new category of cell style?3. Create a new cell style and assign it to a category other than Custom?I know there are add-ins that enable you to do all of the above in their proprietary windows but they don't then change the Excel gallery, I need this to change as I will then be getting other people to import styles from a spreadsheet I give them and those people will not have the add-ins.Hope that makes senseThanks

I would like to have my list in excel have every other row of information a separate color so that the list is easy to read. (i.e. blue row, no fill row, blue row, no fill row, blue row, no fill row, etc.) I would like to be able to sort the data in this list without the color of each row sorting with the information. Is it possible to lock the fill properties of cells so that it does not sort along with the information in that cell?

A:Excel Sorting without cell properties changing

Here's how.

Select however many rows you need (click'n'drag on the row headers).

Choose Conditional Formatting from the Format menu.

Set Condition 1 to Formula Is. In the box, enter

Click the Format button. On the Patterns tab, choose a suitable blue. Click OK. Back in the previous dialog, OK again. The formatting will not be affected by Sort.

Hi, there is one excel file that I have that I would like to keep a certain window size on my computer. I don't like to have to drag it back to the size I want every time I open the file. My other files don't seem to do this, once I change the size of the window it remains that size after I quit the program and re-open it. The file is protected but it seems to not want to listen to me when I try and format the window the way I want it to. Any suggestions?

A:Excel default window size keeps changing

What version of MS Office do you have?

As a general rule, once you drag the corner to the size you want and close the program, it will reopen to that same size. I don't think (but I could be wrong) that there's a way to choose a specific size for one particular document.

The only thing I can think of it to set your "restore down" to the size you want (assuming it's smaller than full screen) and then when you access that document you won't have to drag the corners but rather just click on the "restore down" icon in the top right-hand corner.

whilst techguy was down today I also posted in officeexperts
I have been putting together some pivot table charts in excel (for my brother who has excel2000, I have excel2003 - both versions show the same problem).
the charts default to a bar chart.
I have set up a custom chart which has 1 bar and 1 line - i have also set it to default.
However, every time the chart is updated or change - ot changes back to the barchart only.

so say we have 5 periods of data and on the chart we look at period 1 - with a bar/line combo with clear background graph, when we change to period 2 on the pivot the chart changes to just a barchart with a gray background.

how can i set our custome chart to stay default.....

So I've figured out how to redefine Comma Style to the format that I want to use. But that only applies to a single workbook.

I also found instructions for how to save custom styles into a new default template. The problem here is that this only applies to new workbooks. Very rarely do I create a workbook from scratch, so this isn't much help.

I also figured out how to copy/merge custom styles from one workbook to another. But what do I do if I have hundreds of files I want this custom style to apply to?

Is there a way to redefine Excel's default definition of a given style such that it is applied universally in my local instance of the the program rather than just being file specific?

Thanks in advance!

I have the following data:

Each of the cells is formatted as a date, and is a value.
What I would like to do (and what could be done under Lotus) is to record a macro that puts the ' in front of 1/1/05 and makes it a value. I realize there are other ways to do this, but the functionality of adding a character before a value is what I am looking for.

Functionally, I record this macro with these keystrokes:

F2 Home ' Enter

which results in this code:

ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "'1/1/2005"

If I run this macro, it changes the cells underneath to 1/1/05, instead of keeping their date. Where am I going wrong here and how can I make this work?

Hi everybody,

I really didn't know how to call this question, but I will try to make it clear.

I got an Excel sheet which contains in total over 1000 names and adresses. These adresses contain a lastname, surname and adresse etc.

Cell b10 contains for example, "Klaasen, P"
Cell c10 contains the adress of this person.

Now I would like to get the content of the b10 cell to "P, Klaasen" instead of "Klaasen, P"

Is this possible in any way? I can't find any options in Excel for doing this and I can't find anything on the internet.

Hello guys, I just can't work this one out. A simple formula somewhere on the worksheet "=B1-B11" will give us the answer to the contents of B1 minus the contents of B11.

Here's where I am stuck. I want the answer to be B1 minus what is in the cell that is 10 cells down, in this case B11. But I want the be able to change how many cells it will go down to find the cell to subtract from cell B1.

In my example, if I put 10 in cell A1 how do I make so if I change it to 5, the above formula will effectively be "=B1-TheCellThatIsA5CellsDown", in this example the same answer as the formula will effectively be "=B1-B6" if even makes sense?

Hi folks, got a question re: Excel 2010, running on win7 Pro 32-bit (it's not the machine in my stats).

I looked up tutorials to change the default save folder location for MS Office, and pretty much all of them reference MS Word 2010. Like for example the one in this forum, MS Office Word : Set Default Save Location -- which works fine when I try it, no problem with Word 2010. However, Excel 2010 is being a **** and refuses to following spec.

When I click on File -> Options, then navigate to the "Save" tab, it displays a screen similar to the equivalent one in Word... except that the "Browse" button to change the folders is missing.

No big deal, plus the default file location is already pointing to my user folder: that's fine. However, when I go to save or save-as, this is what pops up:

Yea-- no. Why is Excel showing libraries? I don't want to use libraries. I don't want to see libraries. I've used the registry hack from this forum to remove libraries from showing up in the left pane of Explorer.

How do I get Excel to use my documents folder as the default?

Hi all,

I have done a decent amount of Java, but VB is slightly confusing to me.

I want to be able to write a loop which will copy data, transpose it and then paste it. It needs to do this several hundred times, with each copied data-set being on a new row.
Dim Num As Integer

For Num = 1 To 10 'start loop

'Delete Source Rows
Application.CutCopyMode = False
Selection.Delete Shift:=xlUp

Next Num ' end loop

'Autofit the data

(nb The reason for the cut-paste-copy-pastespecial is because Excel won't cut and paste-special across different sheets.)

As you can see, I'm nearly there, but currently all it does is paste each new set of data over the existing one in cell A34. How do I make it increment the destination row by 4 or 5 on each iteration?

A:Solved: Changing a Cell Reference: Noob question in VBA/Excel

You use Activecell.Offset(r,c).select to move from the current cell. You increment r for rows and c for columns.
Excel has no problems with "Paste Special Transpose" when moving from sheet to sheet. I just recorded this Macro of doing just that -
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteAll, Operation:=xlNone, SkipBlanks:= _
False, Transpose:=True

I was a programmer in VC++ before activex, now I just need to do a little bit for my own personal project. So, bear with me as OLE is new to be and the last Basic I used was not Visual<g>.

I am trying to embed an excel workbook in a form on a SSTab control. I put an OLE container on the control, then cancelled when it asked for the object. In my code, (which I grabbed from the MS knowledgebase), I create the Excel object.

My only real problem is that when the workbook appears, it is not in the "visual container". In the design of the form, I dragged the corners of the object so they would be about 4"x6" on my screen. But when the excel workbook appears, it is only about 2"x3", and it's upper left hand corner is above and to the left of the upper left hand corner of my displayed OLE container.

How can I make the workbook display in the entire container with the upper left-hand corners matching? I tried the zoom, but that gave me the same cells, only a lot bigger. I've tried setting the width and height of the object's window directly, but that seems to have no effect.

Any suggestions?

I have built a simple timesheet for someone in my dept, which includes amongst other things:

- hours worked over a month,
- how many hours owed/extra worked
- a cumulative of this figure over the months.

The requestor wants to be able to type a letter such as 'e' to represent a 07:30hr shift. So they type 'e' and the cell contents change to 07:30. There are about 6 different codes.

Normally a Vlookup would work EXCEPT you can't change the contents of the cell your are working upon.....cicrular referencing!

I could see two ways forward: either a function that allows the above

OR (perhaps more favourably)

leaving the lookups until the hour calculations at the base of the form. i.e Instead of a simple Sum for the hours worked that month, it could read the values in the range, look them up from a table(vlookup), and then sum the looked up figures to give the answer in the 'hours worked' cell.

I vaguely remember this being possible from my university days but can't remember how.

Can anyone help me?

A:Paths , Librabries ?

You need to remember that library's only point to the actual file somewhere on the network or on your own machine in the "user" files. If you need to delate something from the library you should delate the file from the actual source "my pictures" My documents" "my music".

But there is a way to make it work like you want.

Just go into Windows Media Player, choose the "organize" tab then "options" then choose the Library tab and set it to "delate files from the computer when delated from the Library. Although I believe that only works if you are delating files from Library of the machine that contains the source files.

That should allow for delating from the Library, but only from the machine that the files reside on, I don't believe it will work accross the network. It think it still works best if you delate from the file source instead of the Library.

There are still doubts about what the possible and legal upgrade paths are for Windows 7.

Below I tried to compile some information in a way which I hope will be helpful.

Thanks to my friend Kari for his valuable contribution
Any other additions or comments are much welcome

1) Upgrade: to move from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7
2) Custom or Clean Install: wipes the previous installation and install Windows 7 anew. Does not preserve user files
3) In-Place Upgrade: upgrades from specific versions of Vista to specific versions of Windows 7, preserving user files and programs.
4) Upgrade version: Windows 7 license for those who own a valid license of XP or Vista
5) Full retail version: Windows 7 license to install on any PC, independent of previous installations or ownership. Can be reinstalled on other computers (when activated the previous installation is no longer valid)
6) Full OEM version :Windows 7 license to install on one PC, independent of previous installations. Can only be re-installed on same computer and hardware setup

Upgrade paths
The chart below shows in what situations one can perform an in-place upgrade (e.g. from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional) without the need to migrate files or programs, and the situations when one needs to do a Custom (Clean) Install and replace the data in the target disc. This is the case for all Windows XP owners or Windows Vista Starter. In this case you will need to migrate your personal files ... Read more

A:Invalid File Paths

Don't use registry cleaners. If you continue to use them, chances are that crashes will be among the least of your problems. Those things are junk, do only harm, and you should be thankful you were even able to reboot. Performance is not improved by using them, they remove needed entries, and they create their own "errors" so that they can "fix" them, making worse errors in the process.

A:How do you interpret paths like C:\DOCUME~1\...

This kind of path is contraction of the real folder or file names so that they are compatible with the old 8.3 DOS filename format. I don't know why it is necessary, but in (my) theory it works this way:
Long names are stripped of all spaces, even between words.
If the resulting string, without extension, is longer than 8 characters, the 6 leftmost characters are taken and an index appended, to distinguish between similar names.
So "ASDFGHJKLQWE" becomes "ASDFGH~1" while ASDFGHJKLRTZ" becomes "ASDFGH~2"

So the one you submitted translates to something like

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
Where username is different for each user of the computer.

I have tried to set up printing on the other PC and laptop and the Printer is shown in the network map, but cannot and all my efforts have now disrupted the network; viz I cannot access shared files on the Network.

On the Home PC the network is called Network 2.

I want it to be the Homegroup or Work Group but cannot seem to make this happen.

Any suggestions please?

A:How do I reset my network paths

If I take it you want to print on the main PC from the other two ? I have a similar situation and set it up giving the main PC a fixed IP and then when adding the printer to the other two I used the local port method i.e \\fixed IP address\printer share name, having initially shared the main printer - you will need to install the printer driver on the remote systems. My main PC is ethernet and all the others are wireless.

Hope this is of help.

Hi guys.
I've just tried to use WinMX and found that it is showing the full paths as to where files are stored on the users' HDs.

Can I turn this off? It makes it really difficult to see the file you're looking for, with all this C:\My Documents\My Music\..... crap at the front.

A:[SOLVED] WinMX paths??

Go to the Search page. Then, look for a button that says:

Show Full Paths. Press that, and the paths should dissapear

Will the Windows Vista Upgrade path allow me to upgrade from 64 bit Home Premium to 32 bit Ultimate? I need to do this to use my legacy software without re-installing everything.

A:Vista upgrade paths

The last that I read, going from 32 to 64 required a CLEAN install. Based on that I would think that it would be the same for 64 to 32.

Firstly, context: My student edition of Autodesk Maya was not working (something about the license being invalid or 'not found', and so when I searched for the error message online, a solution was to go into Environments and Paths, and replace/edit or add one for C:/Autodesk. It didn't work, and I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling the program manually for it to work.
However, apparently I screwed around really badly in there, because now important things won't open, such as my MalwareBytes program. When I try, a window will popup and say this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
The system could not find the environment option that was entered."
So, naturally, I try to find/open the Environments and Paths thing again, right? Nope. I can't open that either:
"Windows cannot find '%windir%\system32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Even though I typed 'Environment' in my search bar to find it.
Then recently, Origin tried to install an update on my laptop, but it couldn't find the ProgramFiles, and so there was an error in installation. As a result of this, Chrome is not opening up immediately when I click it. It waits about five-six minutes after I've clicked it. I think it's what caused it, because it didn't do it before yesterday, when I tried to install the update.
So basically: how can I fix this despite knowing little to nothing about computers? How can I go into the Environments with... Read more

I can ping by name or IP address, but trying to connect via
\\name or \\ipaddress fails. IP v6 has been disabled on the adapter.  The error message is:
\\share is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  A specified logon session does not exist.
It may have already been terminated.

after i run winaso registry cleaner/optimizer i get a messeage that i need to delte invalid files path

how do i do that ??????????

A:invalid file paths ???

Do yourself a favor, and if a registry cleaner offers to do something you don't understand, decline. It's far easier to clean the system to death than to actually fix something with a registry cleaner.

A little background first.

I have a shortwave radio that is of a new type where a lot of the functions such as filters, etc. is done via software that resides on the PC.

The radio is mfg. by the WINRADIO company.
The model of the radio is a G31 DDC

After playing with the radio, it automatically Saves the frequencies that you have listened to, and puts them into Memory to be able to recall them later.
The file that it creates is called "User Memory"..

I seem to have the User Memory File in the right place, I think, but the "path" to get there seems to be different.

I have one path of:
Libraries/ Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

And another path of:
C:/ Users/ Bob/ My Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

They both seem to lead to the correct file of User Memory.

a. My main question: Is there really only one file of User Memory, but two different ways or paths to get to it ?

b. What's with Libraries; I've never set that up ? What are they ?

c. Notice that one path has My "Documents", and the other just "Documents".

If anyone could explain this for me, I would be most appreciative.

Much thanks,

Since a picture is worth 1000 words....

I can't figure out how to edit booloader paths.

I had the triple boot working- 7, vista, WUBI ubuntu. Then I installed Snow Leopard and tried to add it in via easyBCD.....and all hades broke loose.

Anybody know how to fix? And how to actually set OSX to boot from windows, since there's no drive letter?

A:Edit Bootloader Paths

Open an elevated command prompt in Windows 7

IMPORTANT: make a backup of your bcd file first. To do that, type:

bcdedit /export C:\SAVEDBCD

For Vista:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} device partition=F:

* insert the Windows vista BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

ok, Vista should be working now, please test it to make sure

For Ubuntu: - optional; this will rename "nst Linux Loader" to "Wubi Ubuntu"

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} description "Wubi Ubuntu"

* insert the "nst Linux Loader" BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

It is getting late, so try those, which should get Vista back on its feet, also go to the elevated cmd and type "bcdedit" please post back the results right-click the cmd prompt and select "mark" then highlight every thing, then post the results. Please copy the results, so i will be able to copy and paste

Also, what is the "EFI snow leopard" partition for???

We are stuck for the time being using Window Media Player to Rip/Burn/Sync music with. I've set the paths for the ripped music and library to go to a separate partition/drive, but each time the system is reset, WMP resets the paths back to c:\documents\ etc........
Should this be the way things work?
Thanks for your time,

So I've been trying to use system file checker, and encountered a problem where it can't repair a file. I found this page detailing how to manually fix the problem:

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

I was fine until step 2, where it says

"For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\extremely_simplified_example.dll"

The problem is, my CBS.log file says stuff like:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"

and I don't know how to translate that into a path to use with the takeown command. I searched for that file using explorer and found a dozen different copies, so I'm not sure which one to replace.

Semi-related questions: Can I just replace them all? I'm planning on using a copy of the file from a similar system that works, is that ok?

A:Help understanding CBS.log file paths

Hello Southbound, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those instructions there are fine, but just a bit vague. OPTION THREE in the tutorial below can help give you only the SFC results to help make it easier to go through.SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Next, the tutorial below can show you how to extract files from your installation disc to replace any listed files that SFC cannot repair.Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD
Before doing anything, please post back and upload your sfcdetails.txt file to see what all may be wrong, and if it any file that cannot be repaired is worth worrying about.Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
To help interrupt what it says to know the path:Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
The first line says that SFC cannot repair the FWPKCLNT.SYS file.

The second line is the path of the file. "SystemRoot" is a variable "%SystemRoot%" that is actually just a shortcut for "C:\Windows". This leaves you with the file path as:C:\Windows\WinSXS\Manifests\FWPKCLNT.SYS
Doing a search on the C: drive for the listed FWPKCLNT.SYS file would help give you all of it's locations if needed as well.

Hope this helps for now,

How would I set up Windows 8 so that I can edit the `path` environment variable in a fixed pitch font such as `Console` or `Lucida Console`? I don't want to change the font for other parts of Windows - only where paths are displayed. It seems I've been doing this in a terribly inappropriate font for many years and my tired eyes aren't great for semicolons.

A:change the font for paths

Hi Broiyan,
In windows 7 it was so easy by going to control panel, but now is much harder(you`ll see what i mean):
As Far As i know go to regedit>>>>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>>>>SOFTWARE>>>>Microsoft>>>>Windows NT>>>>Current Vision>>>>FontSubstitues>>>> thats all what i know now i need an MVP like brink to hep you with here.
