correct paths and file names for initiating programmes

Q: correct paths and file names for initiating programmes

Can you supply the correct paths and file names for initiating programmes to view files in

These are needed so that when a user clicks wants to view a document referenced in Q-Pulse
the system ensures the correct programme is launched. This does not happen all the time
when older files are stored with unusual extensions.

A: correct paths and file names for initiating programmes

nik, these could be different on anyone's PC.

If you're looking for the executable file paths, just do a find for the following files and note the folder they're stored in:

PowerPoint: powerpnt.exe
Excel: excel.exe
Visio: visio32.exe (I'm pretty sure about this one, not positive)

Every time one of my users double-clicks on a Word document from explorer Word opens it, but instead of showing the correct file name at the top it shows Document1(2,3,4,etc...depending on how many she's opened). I messed around with her file associations a couple weeks ago, but clicked on Set Default to set it back. Is there something else I did wrong? Or do I need to reinstall Office?

A:Word97 docs not showing correct file names

I think that if the "documents" she is trying to open in Explorer are templates, you will get the results you are. The idea being that you would save your template under another name..... Does the same thing happen when the user Opens the file in Word?

I have been unable to upload .csv or .jpg or .jpeg files to another website in Vista (32).

When I browse for the files, I get an error message which says that it is an incorrect file name. I know that the file names are accurate, but browsing will not locate them.

Also, the only way I am able to find the files (they are on my C drive)is to click the Start and enter them at the bottom left. They appear in the Start area on the left of the screen.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Vista recently because of other problems, and I have a registry cleaner.

I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:

I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.

Hi Guys,

I have 2 webcams attached to my PC and originally Device Manager showed them as USB Camera and USB Camera.

I successfully changed the names in Device Manager and registry to USB Camera 1 and USB Camera 2.

Applications such as Skype and Multicam show them as USB Camera and USB2.0 Camera.

Either where do the apps get device names from ( I thought it was Registry ) or what am I missing

Any Ideas please folks

Perhaps changing the device installation settings to something other than what you have selected at the moment. If I had to guess, I would think your computer automatically downloads device info for you.

I have a 160 GB HD NTFS file system with 118 GB free space. My Documents and setting folder has 8.87 GB with 12,388 Files and 816 folders that are many layers deep.

The problem: Every so often my XP professional OS will not accept a new long file name (less than 50 characters and spaces) but will accept an 8 character (DOS) name.

What is wrong? Have I reached a limit because of the long file names? Or too many files in a single folder? Or?

I run into the same problem with by back-up Hard Drive which has a FAT32 file system.

The problem seems to go away, at least for a while, if I restart my Dell Dimension 9100 PC.

Thank you, Supportbob4
I have replicated my problem both for my NTFS drive and the FAT32 drive.

I also finally got an error message which tells me the problem:
The maximum character and space limit of 255 includes file name plus the names of all the stacked folders after My Dicuments! The whole file path!

It can be very confusing because I was able to make it more than 255 characters and spaces but all of sudden it reached a threshold where it will no longer work until I shortened the file name back to 255. Going between hard drives seemed to make it recover sometimes when I had a longer than 255 path but then all of a sudden it stopped working.

I need to keep my folder names shorter and be cautious on length of file names too when I have many stacked folders.

A:Long file names not accepted Short DOS names ok

From what I recall the WinXP limits it to 255 characters, filenames written command prompt are 253 characters, and those include the filename and extension.

I use WinAso Registry Optimizer; when I run it my computer crashes when it gets to Invalid File Paths, but when I remove the invalid file paths flag, it completes the process just fine. I would like some advice on correcting invalid file paths...thanks.

A:Invalid File Paths

Don't use registry cleaners. If you continue to use them, chances are that crashes will be among the least of your problems. Those things are junk, do only harm, and you should be thankful you were even able to reboot. Performance is not improved by using them, they remove needed entries, and they create their own "errors" so that they can "fix" them, making worse errors in the process.

A little background first.

I have a shortwave radio that is of a new type where a lot of the functions such as filters, etc. is done via software that resides on the PC.

The radio is mfg. by the WINRADIO company.
The model of the radio is a G31 DDC

After playing with the radio, it automatically Saves the frequencies that you have listened to, and puts them into Memory to be able to recall them later.
The file that it creates is called "User Memory"..

I seem to have the User Memory File in the right place, I think, but the "path" to get there seems to be different.

I have one path of:
Libraries/ Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

And another path of:
C:/ Users/ Bob/ My Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

They both seem to lead to the correct file of User Memory.

a. My main question: Is there really only one file of User Memory, but two different ways or paths to get to it ?

b. What's with Libraries; I've never set that up ? What are they ?

c. Notice that one path has My "Documents", and the other just "Documents".

If anyone could explain this for me, I would be most appreciative.

Much thanks,

So I've been trying to use system file checker, and encountered a problem where it can't repair a file. I found this page detailing how to manually fix the problem:

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

I was fine until step 2, where it says

"For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\extremely_simplified_example.dll"

The problem is, my CBS.log file says stuff like:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"

and I don't know how to translate that into a path to use with the takeown command. I searched for that file using explorer and found a dozen different copies, so I'm not sure which one to replace.

Semi-related questions: Can I just replace them all? I'm planning on using a copy of the file from a similar system that works, is that ok?

A:Help understanding CBS.log file paths

Hello Southbound, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those instructions there are fine, but just a bit vague. OPTION THREE in the tutorial below can help give you only the SFC results to help make it easier to go through.SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Next, the tutorial below can show you how to extract files from your installation disc to replace any listed files that SFC cannot repair.Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD
Before doing anything, please post back and upload your sfcdetails.txt file to see what all may be wrong, and if it any file that cannot be repaired is worth worrying about.Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
To help interrupt what it says to know the path:Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
The first line says that SFC cannot repair the FWPKCLNT.SYS file.

The second line is the path of the file. "SystemRoot" is a variable "%SystemRoot%" that is actually just a shortcut for "C:\Windows". This leaves you with the file path as:C:\Windows\WinSXS\Manifests\FWPKCLNT.SYS
Doing a search on the C: drive for the listed FWPKCLNT.SYS file would help give you all of it's locations if needed as well.

Hope this helps for now,

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

I'm having an issue with Windows Media Player for Windows 7.

I imported a bunch of playlists and their associated music files from an XP machine to my new Win7 machine, and some of the music files aren't playing - Media Player simply says that there was "an error" with no further explanation given, but this error only occurs with files with a certain file path.

On my XP machine a large chunk of my music files were located in C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\My Documents\My Music\[artist name]\[song title] as .wma files. I know that in Win7 the Documents and Settings subdirectory was replaced by Users or something - that's not the real problem, because for all my other music files, the file paths as shown in my WMP playlists will adjust themselves automatically and play the music files correctly no matter where the files are moved. My issue stems from the fact that WMP is not correcting the file paths for the files located in Documents and Settings the way it is for all the other files. There is no way to edit the file paths in WMP, or I would have tried that.

This is not the first time I've moved my XP playlists to a Win7 machine, but on my previous attempts I have had no problem simply copying all my music to one folder and playing them in WMP. So I'm not sure why it's not working this time.

I would prefer to avoid rebuilding all my playlists by hand - I really don't think that should be necessary, since as I said I've moved all my data from an XP to a W... Read more

In C:\Documents and Settings\User I have 2 folders:

Start Menu

The files within the Start Menu folder, as an example, have the path: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu.

If I rename the Start Menu folder to, say, xxxxStart Menu, and view path of the files in the folder again, the path remains the same C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu instead of what I expected to be C:\Documents and Settings\User\xxxxStart Menu

The same applies for Favorites.

Additionally, I can leave the renamed xxxxStart Menu folder in Documents and Settings\User and create a new folder of the same name (xxxxStart Menu) and it allows me to do this--even though both names are the same!

I am currently using Skydrive to synchronize files and folders between my home and office computers. I created an Excel file which has hyperlinks linking to files located under the same folder as the Excel file on the local hard disk.
In the past I was using Excel 2010 and the synching would work fine. I would open the excel file in any of the two computers and when I clicked on the hyperlinks the file stored on the local hard disk would open. Recently I purchased Office 360 and suddenly the paths in the hyperlinks linking to the files were changed from a local relative location I.e. \test.xlsx! to a cloud address I.e. On top of that even if I click on the hyperlink the file does not open.
Also Skydrive keeps creating copies of the files at random with the name of the computer where it was modified at the end I.e. test-Home-PC.xlsx.

Anybody know the reason for this and a way around it?

What antivirus do you run? Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download and running the full scan. This should give you the option to get rid of the facemoods.

Find the full path to the registry entry given by ccleaner, start in safe mode, go into regedit, and delete that point yourself. Warning: You may not be able to delete it while Windows is running because doing so may cause your system not to run properly. Make sure you make a backup of that registry key before deleting it.

Try installing the game from its source (DVD, internet download, etc.) and then uninstall it.

I tried the recommendations for fixing this below:

Follow these steps to grant full permissions to the folder where the files are stored: 1. Right click on the folder on the external drive and click on
properties. 2. On the property window, click Security tab.
3. Now click on Edit and then click Add.
4. Now type everyone in the box and
click OK.

5. Then check Full control check box.

6. Click on Apply and then click OK.
You may also try the below mentioned steps:
1. Click on Start. 2. Go to Control Panel. 3. Select "SOUND". 4. Double click on speakers. 5. Click on advanced tab and then uncheck enable audio enhancements.

But then I received the error message that I don't have rights to edit and add. Why would this be? I am the administrator?

I have a external my book fat32 formated and a new mybook ntfs formated external as well. Now when I copy my files from the fat32 to the ntfs external all files copy fine but some give that destination location file characters are too long, meaning that the file names are too long. Now I could change the file names but that would conflict with programs that need that file name. I am using vista ultimate and would like to copy all the files over from the fat32 to ntfs so I can reformat the fat32 to ntfs. The files got on the ntfs from a simple drag and drop from my IDE NTFS internal hard drive. I hope you guys to tell me what to do. Thank you :)

I'm trying to recover an entire terabyte, and I don't want a recovery software which will scrap filenames and file structures, leaving an unintelligible mess to wade through. Is there a software which will preserve file names and structures, and possibly allow me to restore only particular directories?

A:Is there a file recovery software which preserves file names and directory structure?

Hmm; Normally any backup software would do this for you.

If you had a secondary copy (say other media to which you did a copy), then this would be a snap.

It sounds as if you only have the original media and you need to recover "whatever is possible".

I've been given an xlsx file. The customer can only use xls files, so I converted the xlsx file to xls but the new xls file has problems. Missing boxes, formatting off a bit, shading gone.

If I simply open the converted xls file then save it, everything is fine. If I open the xls file and so much as enter the word 'hi in a field, then save, the compatibility checker says significant loss of functionality.

This company laptop has Excel 2010 on it. I think I'm trying to convert a 2007 version to a 97-2003 version, but using this 2010 version. What's going on? And how do I edit the new xls file without any Compatibility Checker problems?

Hi All,

I've got a problem creating long named folders or files on a Linux network share.

I can see and log in to the share without any problems, but if I try to create a folder that is longer than 8 characters, I get the following error message:
The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters: \ / : , ; * ? < > |

Also, I can not see files on the share that have long names...

I only have this problem when I use my Windows 7 machine. XP and Ubuntu work just fine.

I am using Windows 7 Professional.

Hello, hope this is the right place. But for some reason all my winrar archive started showing as a white piece of paper with the top right hand corner folded in, and in the middle the winrar archive icon shows. Ive never had a problem like this before and was wondering how do i fix this problem back up so it shows the winrar icon not with a white piece of paper behind it. Ive got AVG Antivurs Free version edition 9 and I've got malwarebytes anti malware, so i have no idea what could be causing the problem. I have attached a screenshot of what i mean. Note:I have already tried file association and associating it to a different file and then re associating it. Also have tried uninstalling winrar and then installing it again. Thank you Much appreciated Dazz

A:File icon incorrect file association correct

Click Start, Run, Regedit.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes and scroll down until you find RAR or WinRar (Not sure as I don't have it); whichever it is, it should show the (default) entry as RaR File (you could also use Find > RAR File).

It should also have a subkey of DefaultIcon. Click on this and it'll show the path where it gets the icon from. The last number in the path, after5 the comma, is the icon selected from that file. The normal path should be pointing to the Winrar.exe file, and the number something other than 0.

Export the key first, just in case you need to restore it, and change the number to 0. Should change the icon shown for Winrar archive to the main one.

If not, report back on anything that deviates from the above, including a screenshot of the registry keys.

Ok I'm totally at a loss on how to word this so I'm just going to write it out the best that I can...

First I have a batch file that I'm writing that will convert mp4 files to mp3 files (I have a lot) for a buddies band using ffmpeg.

Here's the code that I'm using:

ffmpeg -i folder\video.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music.mp3"

what I would like to do is add to this so that I don't have to write out this code for every file I have... :/

I have the mp4 files in one folder and than the mp3 files are saving to another folder.

So here's an example of what the code will do if it isn't clear yet.

Folder 1:

what it should do is grab video1.mp4 and convert it.

ffmpeg -i folder\video1.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music1.mp3"

and than move onto the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video2.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music2.mp3"

and than the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video3.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music3.mp3"

It's going to have to grab the name from the mp4 file and insert it for the mp3 file.

I can get around pretty good in cmd if it's basic commands but when it comes to something like this I'm a little confused...

Thanks for the help in advance!
I'll see what i can do about searching some more on what I would have to do and if I find the solution I'll post it here if it isn't already answered.

A:Batch File that grabs file names from folder to insert into batch file

A DOS "for /f" loop should do the trick, although changing the filename extension for the output to do everything in one line escapes me at the moment.

Perhaps you could do a dir .\folder\*.mp4/s/b > mp4s.txt, then make a copy of that and edit each line to rename the file to the destination name, and save it as mp3s.txt. Then you just feed both the source (mp4s.txt) and destination (mp3s.txt) filesnames into the for /f loop which handles the ffmpeg conversion.

Quite a crude solution and you'd have to handpatch the destination filenames, but i can't think of how to get a source mp4 filename and then just change the extension.

This is just reverting from your "long file name" back to the old DOS format of 8.3, max eight character name and a three character file extension. There is nothing wrong with it. I am not really sure what would cause it to switch, but it shouldn't hurt the contents. Besides the weird name, are you having any problems with the files?

Seem to remember hearing that some network software will cause this to happen. Are the files stored locally or on a network share?

The file name it wants is the name of the flv file (guess youtube downloads) , which you want to convert to mp3 .

Usually such programs have a browse button ... through which you are to navigate to the file which is sought to be converted . Browse to the location , select the flv, the filename will be automatically taken .

For some better help, provide the download link here , so that we may try the program and guide you the steps with screenshots .

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to naming files (for sharing) like these examples:

The Keys to the Kingdom.mkv

I see these on FTP sites and other similar places.

A:Best File Names for Sharing

There is no practical difference in any file name. As long as the name is valid, the computer don't cares at all and software will just work. Use the one that suits you better.

The only caveat I found is with names with spaces. When refering to those, the command lines including those must be enclosed in quotes to avoid trouble, but once the quoting is in place, they work the same as anything else.

I have searched this but havent found the exact same issue

I am on a work laptop with Windows 7.

We recently changed our servers to be online only.
This means all of our drives are now through dropbox or something similar.

One drive has remained in my drive list.
Originally I had access to this drive but could not edit the files and folders inside.
Look but dont touch.

When the drive changeover commenced all of the information on this drive was transferred to the online drives AND an external hard drive. WHat wasn't noticed straight away was that about 150 file names were too long for either transfer.

I still have access to these files on one of the server drives for whatever reason.
But when I try to open or copy the files it crashes windows explorer.
Example of file name R:\ARCHIVE; OED Drive\Online Education\Online education department student files\Diploma student files\Yvette Fraser\C - BSBWHS401A Implement and monitor WHS policies programs to meet legislative requirements
I have tried copy and paste, cmd line, and several smart programs and I cannot seem to get these files to copy over or even move.
Copy and paste comes up with the file name too long error.

I can however copy about 2gb of other files from this drive without a problem.
The file name is definitely the issue as all other files and folders can be copied to another drive.
On copying the whole drive it comes up with file name too long for those files.

Any help would be great... Read more

I am looking for a script/group policy or reg hack etc that I can apply to a Win2K domain woth XP workstations which will limit the length of filenames & folders that our users can create. I'd ideally like a limit of ,say, 50 characters.

I haven't been able to find anything out there so far and am wondering if such a utility exists.

A:Long File Names

File and path character limitations are a property of the format of the disk involved; not the operating system .
For example NTFS has a 255 character file name limit and 255 character path length limit

FAT32 has standard 8.3 limitations for the name (255 UTF character file name in OS with Long File Name support where the 255 character name is truncated to an 8.3 for the file system)

Might be able to put in a GP for MAX_PATH let me look
No, I think that is something you do in an application not an os.

"The files name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path."

The file names are 16-19 characters long. I try to edit the file name to something smaller and it keeps telling me it's too long, even when I cut it down to 11 (anything shorter than that and naming it at all is useless). It tells me this when trying to edit the name of the one on my computer - so I can't even shorten the names in order TO try to transfer over.

This post is a little long, but I feel I need to explain fully what is happening. This problem just beats the hell out of me, and although I believe I now have the problem solved, I would like some input if anyone has come up on a similar situation. This event occurred on two machines.

I've recently put FPS Creator on my External Hard drive, and brought it to a different computer so I could build the game, which simply won't work on my own PC.

However, there is a file that I need to look at to find a script: however, something very odd seems to have happened. All the files have filenames like '5z-{)y.│dd' and ']o┼▓▓.S'. I don't know which file to open to find the right entity!

Does anybody know how to tackle this? It's happened to all the folders in a folder called 'stuff', and all the files.
If you can help, thanks a lot!

A:Strange file names

This may be a corrupted $MFT

Go to Run and type CMD to open up a Command Prompt Window. (elevated Command Prompt if using Vista - see )

when command prompt window opens type

chkdsk c: /f /v (assuming c is your drive letter) - you will probably have to reboot t complete the check

G'Day, and Welcome to TSF!

There is nothing to be concerned about having blue files listed on your computer.
These files are 'compressed to save disc space' by Windows? Xp; usually when updates are installed on your machine.
If you wish to 'uncompress' them, it would be a laborious task of individually changing the properties of files.
The performance and operation of your computer is NOT affected by these files being compressed.

Hopefully this allays any fears, and answers your query.
If not, just post back with you queries/concerns.

Hi,I have many files on a WD external h/drive.I wish to be able to copy file names only to a document without copying the files. Will not let me high light the names only.thanks terry

A:how to copy file names only

I'm not sure how to do it in windows but from command prompt you can type dir h: /s>filename.txt and enter. Where h: is the drive and filename.txt is the file the names are copied to. The /s will have it search any subfolders also. The file filename.txt will be deposited in whatever folder you ran the command from. The file names will be listed folder by folder and not as a single list for the entire drive.Someone much wiser than myself may be able to tell you how to do it in windows or there may be third party software that will do it too.

How is it possible in Windows XP to have a font color in used in the text of a folder name on the C: drive? Somehow I accidentally colored the folder Heidi on the C: drive blue. This is something I would like to know how to do.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

A:(ttt) Colors of file names

Windows automaticaly shows encrypted or compressed file names in blue.If you want to stop this go to Folder Options/View and almost at the bottom you will see "Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color" uncheck it. Alternatively, you could un-encrypt or un-compress the file.

I have been having issues on my XP os renaming the files to the real names. Its weird I can name them just fine by clicking twice and just typing in the right name of the video file. But when I put the video on my External Hard Drive and plug it into my PS3 for playback they have a different name.

Now if i hold my mouse over the highlighted file it will show TITLE and there will be the not right file name that I dont want to be there. But I cant figure out how to change it to the name of the movie.

Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks!

I had a worm hit my computer and it changed a lot of my exe files to vxd. I went to symantec and followed the instructions on how to change these extensions. I was able to change notepad.vxd control vxd mplayer vxd and winhlp32.vxd back to their exe extensions, but now I am having problems converting the others back.
If there is anyone out there that can help me, I would appreciate it.

I attempted to open my Ext HDD with over 200GB of important files, and find that all file names and folder names have been changed Here are some samples: ":2┤|z≈!.h╞ and ,8Θ!■4.╩^, and even letters describing the type of file has been changed and there is no consistency in the new labels. I have attached a .doc file with a screenshot of the HDD contents. I don't know if the file contents have also been changed or just the file & folder names, etc.

Please help. I don't know what to do, and many of these are important files.

Thanks for any help!!

When I logged into my computer today, I saw a green checkbox or a red exclamation point or a yellow question mark next to every file name. I've never seen these before. Is this nothing to worry about, or is it time to run Hijack This? Please help... I need to do year-end financials but am afraid to access sensitive files now! Screen shot is attached.

Thanks, all.
