Solved: Word 2003 - Hyperlinks don't work in Print Layout

Q: Solved: Word 2003 - Hyperlinks don't work in Print Layout

I have been used to using Word 97, but the company has upgraded me to 2003. I am using the Print Layout to create my documents, and when I create a hyperlink, the hyperlink shows up in underlined blue, but it won't work. It will work if I view the document in Reading Layout, but that doesn't do me any good, since that layout does'nt look anything like the Print Layout. Can anyone make any suggestions?

A: Solved: Word 2003 - Hyperlinks don't work in Print Layout

It works.
It's just that Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, decided to make us Ctrl+Click for a hyperlink.

Otherwise, you can change the setting on your PC to NOT require the Ctrl key.
Tools-Options-Edit tab. Second checkbox on the right...

And don't you just LOVE that Reading Layout feature?

Hello to all,
I'm wondering if it is possible to change layout on only one page on the document.
I'm writing an article and I want to place picture on the page. Since picture is rather big, it better fits landscape layout page. I can also rotate picture and then paste it on my page, but then, I still have problems to write text below it like "figure 1: Engine...bla bla...."

Thank you

Hi socalhkc, welcome to TSG.

The default behavior in Word 2003 is to require ctrl+click to prevent you from accidentally going to links when you don't mean to, but you can disable it:

Click Tools.
Select Options.
In the Options dialog box, select the Edit tab.
Uncheck Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink.
Click OK.

Hope that helps.

For the past two weeks I have noticed that hyperlinks placed in email I am sending are being stripped by Outlook. I use Word 2003 as the email editor. I can write an email, insert (or have automatically convered) emails but if I either send or save those emails, the hyperlinks are removed. The problem does not occur if I use Outlook's email editor.

I have made no setting changes on my system, except moving from XPSP2 beta to XPSP2 Final.

When we try to open a MS Word document from the browser window (IE), it normally opens in the view in which it was last saved. (Web layout, print layout views etc.) Is there any way I can force a word document to open in the Print Layout View, everytime i load it onto a browser window?

(My requirement is actually exporting a JSP File to MS Word. This works fine, and the only problem is, after the export is done, i get to view the word doc in the browser in Web Layout. My requirement is to view it in Print Layout)

Please help me out on this, and i'll be glad to provide any other clarification that you might need.

I don't think there is any (known) way of getting documents to open in your requested view - it just depends on the view the document was saved in.

I have several Word documents with hyperlinks in them. One link connects to the internet and the other links connect to specific sections of the documents. All the hyperlinks worked until today. Now none of them work. I get a message saying "this operation has been canceled due to restrictions on this computer. please contact system administrator"

I have hyperlinks in Word Perfect documents that still work fine.

I use Win XP and have a Word 2003 document with some hyperlinks in it. Ive had this document for a long time and regularly edit it. The hyperlinks have always displayed in the correct way.

Then I think I must have done something, because all of a sudden all the links are displaying in an odd way.

Ive tried the ALT + F9 trick and Ive tried going to options and turning off field codes - none of these things fixes the problem.

The links look like this:

NB ive had to insert the "!!" and the "⊥" symbol manually because it didnt copy and paste properly. As a result the upside down t is actually not quite the same (its set slightly lower here whereas in the original document its set higher). Also, the "http://..." bit is actually a live hyperlink in blue in the original document.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Many thanks

More than likely your memory is your issue. You do not have much and if you are rendering lots of images it eats up your computers memory. I have seen this also happen with low-end video cards as well. It has issues rendering or displaying them. Typically if you minimize and maximize you can then see the image. I have not tried the hit enter afterwards though.

Please note thread name inaccurate. Problem is in Office 2003 and Firefox.

Hi there

I am an IT professional and expert but I have to admit I'm stumped with this problem.

I cannot print to my Xerox Phaser 6280DN PS using Word 2003, Excel 2003, Firefox. Other packages do print, including Wordpad and Acrobat. The OS is Windows 7 64bit, the printer driver is from Microsoft's 'get a driver for W7 64' page.

The printer is connected to my LAN and no other computer on the LAN has a problem. Previous to the install (fresh) of Windows 7 64bit, Windows XP had no problems printing from anything.

Actually, I can't get Word to print on any of the print-like devices listed, including the MS XPS Document writer and Cute PDF writer.

I've googled til I'm blue in the face for months and months.

I do suspect this is a security issue and something to do with user rights, although my account has admin rights.

Please, someone, save me from the misery of converting everything to rtf and printing through wordpad!

A:Can't print. Word 2003 only.

HI. We have having issues with Xerox copiers also. It seems that with windows 7 the print driver must be certified otherwaise you get prompted for admin rights. Under server 2008 there is a GPO which is called point and print that is meant to take away the prompting but I couldn't get it to work [and judging by the google responses, nobody else could] I have noticed that some of the Xerox drivers we have tried are certified but the certificate has expired which makes me wonder if Xerox are hacking certified drivers about.

All printers installed are connected to a Windows Server 2000 print server.

Word 2003 suddenly lost all print function. No changes where made to the
system. If I click on File/Print? the print options dialog box does not pop
up. I can click on the print button in the toolbar (it highlights and is
clickable) but nothing happens. I can perform a print preview and attempt to
print but with the same issues.

I can click on Start/Printers and Faxes and print a test page. I can click
on the Adobe add-in button and convert it to a PDF and print the document
from Adobe. I can print from Excel, notepad, WordPad, Adobe and even IE7 if I
wanted to, just not Word (Outlook included because Word is the default email

Attempted fixes:
Delete, delete and excel1.xlb (seen this restore
functionality before), checked for any disabled items and found none,
performed a repair installation, performed a complete reinstall of Office
2003, logged in using a different user account using different printers, all
with no luck.

Suggestions appreciated....

At my work we have templates from Word 2003.

When we open them in Word 2007 they doesn´t work as they should.

We have for example a menu like

2 Electronics
2.1 Phones
2.1.1 Mobile phones

When you make an uppdate on the menu the sub-numbers disapear so it is
2 Electronics
Mobile phones

Also in 2003 you get a menu to the right where you can change in the list not only the types but also the numbering. Is there something like that in 2007?

A:Making Word 2003 templates work in word 2007

A couple of things.

Firstly here is an interactive guide for some of the features in 2003 - 2007. It is useful in some circumstances

In regards to using 2003 templates for 2007 - i noticed that not all things worked in the same way in 2007 especially when it came to printing (things would display differently to how they would print)

I work for a big company and i had to redesign alot of templates. Sorry.

In regards to changing the numbering, you now right click on one of the actual numbers within the document and you can change the numbering from there.

Hope that all makes sense.

I currently have about 30,000 lines of macros. Occasionally the people I work for want an updated list of all the macros in that file (most are user specific) so that they know what macros they have and if then need a different one or edit a current one.

What have been looking for is a way to print the names of the macros only, and not the entire marco file/code.

the first macro looks something like this..

Sub hinj()
' hinj Macro
' Dr. H's Corticosteroid Injection
Selection.TypeText Text:= _
Selection.TypeText Text:= _
"The patient's * was injected with."
end sub

(cut short for brevity)

then the next macro, and so on and so forth.

What i have been looking for is a way to print a list of the macros but not the macro themselves.

IE.. I wold like it to print out...

hinj Macro
Dr. H's Corticosteroid Injection

Dr. H's Hyalgan Macro

Dr. H's Supartz Macro.

so on and so forth with all 375 macros printed.

Is there a way to do this? I would be most appreciative for any clue as to how to do this.

Hi, all.

I've searched here and Googled. The problem (but no solution) has been posted elsewhere and I'm hoping someone here can help.

Problem: Nearly 1,000 hyperlinks in an Excel 2003 workbook now point to the wrong directory/drive and need to be repointed. For example:

Old hyperlink: ///dsnetapp\\100\125\data\[doc name].pdf
New hyperlink: I:\100\125\data\[doc name].pdf

All of the documents to which the hyperlinks point have been moved to a new drive and no longer work.

What I've tried: Search and replace (doesn't work), manually editing a single hyperlink (doesn't work). Everything reverts back t the ///dsnetapp\\ address. The workbook, worksheet, and cells are not protected. The workbook is not read-only.

The only thing that seems to work is re-doing each hyperlink (go into Edit Hypelink, navigate to new location, select pdf, and save). I would like to find some fix that's less time-consuming and would appreciate any assistance.

Thank you.

I am preparing a chemistry textbook and have hit several interesting, undocumented limits in Word. I was able to bypass them by splitting the document into two documents and linking the second as a sub-document in the first. This introduced another interesting problem...

Each document contains several text boxes.

&#8226; Everything is visible is print preview.
&#8226; When I print each individual document, everything prints.
&#8226; [THE PROBLEM] When I print the complete document, some(?) text boxes in the first document do not print; all text boxes in the second document print. (Again, everything is visible in print preview, but not in the printed document).

My wife hadn't accessed her User account for some and found last week that no icons or taskbar would load up on boot, just the wallpaper.

Ordinarily a link in an Outlook message went to a web site. This afternoon, clicking on a bunch of known to be valid links always brings up the Windows or Office dialog box "Look in My Documents" and it is looking for an Exe file.

Any idea what setting I hit to generate this result?

I'm running Windows XP with MS Office. I get my email in Outlook. Starting today whenever I click on a hyperlink, small window titled "Locate Link Browser" pops up showing "Look in: My Documents". At the bottom it has "File name" _________
and "Files of type" Executable Files.

I have no idea how to fix this.

ALSO when I click a shortcut on my desktop, a small window titled "Open with" pops up showing "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:"
Then I have to select "Internet Explorer"

Perhaps this will help.

Open Outlook> Tools> Options> Mail format> in Message format make sure the "compose in this message format" is set at HTML.

Outlook will only receive messages in the format it can send them in.

I have a couple of problems with my internet/email (Yahoo).

Problem 1
My hyperlinks does not work. For example (see the attached file). When I go to my Yahoo email, I first get the message as shown in the attachment. It never redirects me, hence my alternative is to click on the hyperlink. However, when I click on the hyperlink then nothing happens. What I currently do as a workaround is use the back button to go back to the yahoo page and then I click on "mail" again to get me to my emails.

I know this is some setup problem with Tools --> Internet Options. I have tried almost everything on what people have recommended on enabling or disabling the options, but the problem has not been fixed.

Problem 2
This just started happening since a week ago. I have rebooted my computer a couple of times just to see if this problem would go away, but it hasn't. The problem is that when I go to my Yahoo email, it takes literally 2 to 3 minutes to open an email message even if this is without any attachments. This is extremely slow and frustrating. I am not sure why this has become so slow and what can I do to fix it.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

A:Solved: Word Perfect- Word 2003 - word 2007

If you saved the file in the "new" Word 2007 format (with a file extension of .docx) then you will be unable to open it in the other applications.

For Word 2003 you can install a converter, but I know of no XLM converter for WordPerfect.

When using Word 2007 you need to "save as" Word 97-2003 format to retain backwards compatibility.

To fit a big flowchart onto a PowerPoint slide, I had to create a separate .PPT file in Portrait mode. I then created hyperlinks to navigate back and forth between the main (landscape) .PPT file and the portrait .PPT file. They work fine...on MY computer. When I send the two files for review, the reviewer gets a pop-up message (“Can’t find specified file”) when he clicks on a hyperlink.

I explained that he needs to save the files to his desktop and put both files in a folder and open it from there, then go into Slideshow mode; he said he did, but the hyperlinks won’t work. What can I do so the hyperlinks will work between these two files on other computers?

I also have hundred of words that I have added to spell check that it would be great if I could copy those as well.

I do have a flash drive that I can save these to.

Hi all, do you know if it is possible to word-wrap text around an inserted picture in Word 2003? Basically, I'm trying to create a class reunion program with a one-page bio of a person with his/her picture in the upper right-hand corner. I have pasted a picture and positioned it where I want at the top; however, it forces the text below it downwards, which is not what I want. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: Word 2003 - Insert Picture/Word Wrap Question

Select the picture

Make sure the mouse pointer is hovering over the picture and click once with the right mouse button

Click once with the left mouse button on the menu choice "Format Picture"

Select the "Layout" tab

In the section called "Wrapping Style" click once with the left mouse button on "Square"

Beneath where it says Horizontal alignment click once with the left mouse button on "Right"

Click on OK

You should be able to type text to the left of the picture.

Hi, I've got a large word document (2007) containing over 100 pages. However, in print layout view (the one I normally do editing in), you cannot scroll past p41. As you scroll into p42, word stops refreshing and updating the screen and moves you back into p41. I've uploaded the file so that you can see what I mean for yourself (although I have read the notice not to upload private data this problem is file-specific - I'll take it down as soon as a fix can be found):

feasibility study.docx

And also a linked excel file to go with it (in the same directory. I've got references in the word document if that makes any difference):

Oddly enough, I can see the whole file in outline or draft view, though I am unable see any pictures or charts. On print layout view, clicking any link in the document map that takes you past page 41 will do nothing, and pressing ctrl+G to jump to a page will result in word telling you that it "cannot determine the destination". Also, trying to print the document results in word showing a progress bar in the status bar printing p1, p2 etc until p41, then it just aborts silently. Oddly enough saving it as a 2003 .doc file resolves the problem, but messes up the formatting.

I really hope you guys can help.

Thanks for your support.

A:Strange print layout view and printing problem

After experimenting some more I found it to be a problem with the equation editor in word - I think it was that fact I had multi-line equations and after some combinations of undo/redo and deleting line breaks, ended up with two equations on the same line (it usually merges two adjacent equations) - i think that really messed word up, though to be honest Word should never have let it happen in the first place.

I think in the end its something to do with aligning characters on multi-lined equations that have empty lines in between, e.g ("<br/>" for line break, "|" for alignment character):

i.e. x|=y+z <br/>

When removing and creating the alignment points on these equations, the equation editor can often be slow or start causing the problems I mentioned before - I know its not just my version of Office since I've tried it on at least 5 different computers in 5 separate locations.

But anyway, I've replaced the feasibility study.docx file with one containing the culprit equations in case somebody from Microsoft looks round and decides to fix the problem.

See what you think.

Hello to all!

It has been a while since this problem first occurred. Now it has become unbearable. When I try to print, use print preview or enter page setup, Microsoft Word 2003 freezes. The same thing also happens with other Office 2003 programs like Microsoft Excel 2003.

I am not sure if there is a problem with my printer driver (the printer is an HP L2600n by the way) as I have reinstalled it many times AND I have no problem using it as a network printer and can print the same word documents FINE from laptops or other desktop computers in the house. Thus I know that the documents aren't corrupted. I can also print .pdf documents fine from this computer. I think this problem started when my laser printer driver 'disappeared' and when I tried to reinstall it I got a spool-related error. I reinstalled the spool driver and then when I tried to print a .doc file I was unable to do so. The problem may most likely be linked to Office 2003 itself but I have tried options like deleting the data key and renaming the template, all which have failed to alleviate the problem.

I think that is all the information I can offer to assist anyone trying to help me with this matter, and I hope that the problem can be fixed without me having to reformat or something like that.

Thank you in advance.

P.S Not sure if this will also come in handy but my OS is Windows XP Professional SP2.

My DB writes reports to PDF with complete success - all bar the ability to make hyperlinks work from within the PDF results.

Does anyone have any experience in this aspect of getting Hyperlinks in Reports to work?

I suspect its a PDF output issue

I know I can export a Word Doc to PDF and get links to work - how do I do in from Access?

Hello everyone:

This is my first time posting ever, so please forgive me if I'm unclear...and I'm new to VBA programming...I want to learn it!!

I have an Excel File (See attached example) which was created using karen's Directory Printer of .doc .xls .txt files on one of our drives a work.

I can create an individual hyperlink for a document file in column D using the full path in Column E by right clicking and inserting a hyperlink.
My question/request is: That drive currently has aproximately 8200 files in it. It'll take me a while do hyperlink each by itself.
I have the Column D File names in a named range "File_Name" ='G Files'!$D$3:$D$8829 and Column E "Path_File" ='G Files'!$E$3:$E$8829.
Can a VBA program be created which will Hyperlink the named Column D files to their corresponding named corresponding Column D Paths?
And again, I am brand new to VBA, so any help and examples would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Willing to Learn Newbie

I made this macro a while ago, you can just pate a list into A1 and then click the button and it will convert the path to a hyperlink.

Outlook 2003 hyperlinks
When inserting a hyperlink into an HTML email, I find that I cannot click on the link whilst composing, the recipients will be able to click on the link once it has sent. Is this a 'design feature' of Outlook 2003? just wondering!?

I've had this problem in Outlook 2000 as well, but it doesn't bother me as a quick copy and paste to use it works for me

Hi, I upgraded to excel 2003 from excel 2000. The 2003 version modified my hyperlinks puting %20 where there had blank spaces. I found why and took care of that problem, but, it didn't change what had been change. So I need to replace the %20 with blank spaces, and since I have thousands to do I was wondering if there was a way to do them all at once with a macro or something.

Thank you

Periodically I get the following error when I am using my Outlook email program and try to click on a hyperlink.  I am hoping someone can help me with this problem as it is a pain in the butt.  I have already checked Microsoft’s website, downloaded and ran the recommended “fixit” with no success.  I downloaded a batch file entry for my registry which was written by somebody who had this same problem.  If I run this file it corrects the problem for the moment, but then it is back again.  It seems if I have closed Outlook and reopened it the problem happens.  I have also noticed that it can appear if I open Outlook after waking my computer out of “sleep mode”.  As I stated, the problem is sort of intermittent.  Here is the info on my system.  Any help would be appreciated.
Windows 7x64 Professional.  My Office program is 2003 version.  Here is the error:
This operation cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.  Contact system administrator.

That outlook is old and outdated really. Microsoft doesn't even support outlook anymore they have gone to Live essentials live e-mail which is free. It's like 10 times better. It's ok to keep the office word etc, but outlook just stinks and the security stinks you gotta download 2 service packs just to secure outlook. Outlook is just garbage nothing but problems setting up security certs with it. I highly recommend downloading Microsoft Live Essentials and during the install process just check that you want windows live e-mail. Once it's installed migrate over or import your accounts and mail over to live e-mail from outlook.

So far I've noticed this layout view (screenshot: as being unique to MS Word for Mac. Is that correct?

I plan on getting an netbook soon which will have Windows 7 as its operating system. Does Microsoft Word for Windows have this notebook layout view? If not, does anyone know any alternative softwares, preferably but not necessarily free of charge?

Thanks for your time.

All I have found is that this is a MAC feature only.
