Error 1606 w MS Money 02 Sys Pack on XP Sp2

Q: Error 1606 w MS Money 02 Sys Pack on XP Sp2

This is an annoying problem and the answer is probably really simnple and I am just too aggravated to see it. Whenever I try to access MS Money or install certain things on my computer (MS Media Player) I get an error message 1606 referencing MS Money System Pack and no further explanation. I have read through the registry and don't see anything out of place. I have tried uninstalling, checking the registry to make sure nothing was left behind and then trying to reinstall. I cannot even start installation now because the installation wizard keeps telling me I have to install SYSPACK.MSI for MS Money System Pack before I can install the rest of the program. So I try to install and I get the stupid Error 1606 again. Any ideas???

Hey guys,

I have been infected by money pack several times now. I was able to remove it last time through safe mode, but now every time I try starting in safe mode the screen goes black and it just restarts the PC (I think the malware has become more intelligent lol). So I tried Hitman kick start with no luck. I just found some threads with instructions to use Farbar and get the data log on a flash drive so I did that. The results are listed below:

Thanks for any help.

A:FBI Green dot money pack virus

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Sorry for the delay, but these forums can be very busy

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following for me:
Download Security Check from here.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked... Read more

I finally found what looks like a good 6 button gamepad with the Saitek usb gamepad. I want to get it for games like Street Fighter 2 on gametap. Would the rumble feature work with the the old games on gametap, or are there only a few games that support it? Its about $10 more for the rumble feature, is it worth it?

A:Is the rumble pack worth the money on a pc gamepad?

Matter of opinion. I personally have Logitech Rumblepad2. I usually turn off vibration as it makes my PC hotter on an intense game like GTR2. I have no regrets though as I do use it sometimes and I expect it to work in the future with other games.

I'm running Windows 7 home premuim X64

So i got the dreaded FBI money pack virus. I've had this virus in the past and my steps to remove it have always been the same... Boot into safemode, run RKill to stop malicious processes, then use malwarebytes to remove the virus... always works...

However, this time i can't even get access to safe mode! After choosing safemode with networking ( also tried no networking and with command prompt) windows will load into safemode but the moneypak page has still taken over my screen, can't get into the start menu, can't open run ( Crt+R )

How is this possible? Has the money pack virus evolved into a .sys virus? loading as a driver? I just don't get it.

So popped my harddrive into a secondary computer and did a full scan of the hardrive with malwarebytes from the working machine. Malwarebytes detected the virus and i removed it.... I figured all would be fine now.

NOPE! When trying to boot again from the infected drive, it still loads the damn money pack even in safemode...

Any tips on how i can get rid of this damn thing? I dont have any restore disks or the windows disks. Its a prebuilt acer that didn't come with any disks, it's one of those where i'm supposed to create my own disks.. but guess who didn't create his own disks.... yeah.

So any tips would greatly be appreciated as i have tried all i can think of

Windows continually attempts to install MS Money 2002 any time I navigate via Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. I saw an earlier thread where the same thing happened upon startup but that's not happening with me. I already have MS Money 2002 installed and it's been working fine until 2 January, when the MS Money folder was modified - albeit not by me. I ran a recent version of Norton Anti-Virus & some Spyware programs, but nothing was found.

Would appreciate any help.

Used by Microsoft Money as a user name and password for security with data files. An online service that enables you to use your e-mail address and a single password to sign into any service or website on the Passport Network. Microsoft Money uses Passport to upload account data to the MSN Money site so users can access investment data online. Beginning with Microsoft Money 2006, Passport accounts are required to share data files efficiently between two computers. Reinstalling Money will result in requiring a password. (Hotmail/Windows Live Email address and password)
The Passport Network is necessary to sign in to MSN Messenger, MSN Hotmail, MSN Music, and other sites. Visit the Passport Network to sign up or investigate further.

When I did, I got an error message: "Error 1606 Cannot access network location %AppData%\". A:error 1606

Welcome tatermachine ( got a friend I call "Tater Salad" - drives him nuts!)

There is a way to fix this - you'll have to do some registry editing - go to system restore and set a restore point before you begin the steps.

The steps are here>
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315352
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
In the right pane of Registry Editor, double-click Common Administrative Tools.
In the Value data box , type the following line, and then click OK:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

Also you wouldn't happen to have Norton on that machine would you?
That could also cause this error.

Norton removal tool>
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Norton-Removal-Tool-Download-26173.html

Hope this helps - and follow the steps closely - print them or write them down - so you can type the correct files in.

A:Error 1606 with Acrobat 7.0

Hi sbghasemi. After reviewing your log I see no signs of viruses or malware at this time. Your log is clean. If you are getting an error that it cannot start up from a network location do you have access to that network location? You might want to contact Adobe and explain your issue and they should be able to assist you.

Cheers.

A:Error 1606 %AppData%\

It's really simple, you looked at the Microsoft knowledgebase article 886549 and if any of the items in the table listed DO NOT MATCH what you have in your registry, you just change them.1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit.exe, and then click OK.2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell FoldersWhen you get to step 2, right click the keyname of User Shell Folders and choose EXPORT. This will export the key as a backup REG file which you can double-click to re-import those settings should anything change for the worse. Now here is what I have when I export the User Shell Folders then open the REG file using Notepad:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Hi i had a trial copy of Alcohol 120 and decided to get a proper copy, maybe i didnt delete the trial version properly because when i try to install proper version it tells me that i have to uninstall the trial version so i press unisntall and get the message:

ERROR 1606 Could not access network loaction %Userprofile%\Recent\

it then stops installation

I also tried to install an old copy of Discjuggler and am getting the same message.

Any help would be appreciated

A:Error 1606 with Alcohol 120

This may happen due to incorrect registry Value-type for Recent, in the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders

* Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
* Navigate to the above location
* In the right-pane, double-click Recent and set it's data as follows:

%Userprofile%\Recent

Important: The Value type must be of REG_EXPAND_SZ type. If it is of REG_SZ type, delete Recent, and then create a new value of the correct type.

* Close Regedit and restart Windows.

Every time I attempt to install a program it will pop up with this error message - Error 1606 %AppData% - . Iv tried comparing my registry to the one provided by Microsoft but both are identical. I've ran their Fix it program- had no effect. Iv scanned my computer - no virus or infected files found. I have done several system restores to earlier dates all of which had no effect on the problem.

I first noticed the problem yesterday while i was installing some CPU over clocking software. Didn't think much of it until i had to have a paper written for college that required the ability to open PDF files. I attempted to download Adobe reader and it gave me the same message as before - Error 1606 - . After reading several different forums talking about Adobe being the problem i uninstalled it, and then attempted to install a game. This also didnt change anything still the same error occurred.

Its been around 8 hours so far of testing and looking but so far. Nothing. My Admin account has also been acting strange now. Firefox will no longer open nor my documents on that account.

Any help or advice would be awesome.

Some programs will not install "Error 1606 could not find access network location %APPDATA%Roaming\".

From an earlier thread Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\.
on that error I have found that one of the APPDATA keys is set incorrectly and not as in a reply:

Quote:
3. The correct and default value for AppData should be: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming

When I right click to enter a new value, several options appear and I am not sure which to use.

Advice will be much appreciated.

A:An Error 1606 question

Only if you have gone playing around with the regisry or moved the appdata folder yourself, should these values ever be wrong.

Do NOT change them.

First run SFC /SCANNOW
IF SFC indicates that it corrected some problems, then reboot your computer and run sfc agiain and once again reboot.

Let us know the results.

Hello

I am trying to install a program and can't because of en error that keeps happening. "ERROR 1606. Could not access network location %USERPROFILE%\Recent\." Any suggestions???

A:Solved: Error 1606

Is this happening with just one program or many? Is the install being made off the hard drive or from another location.

If it is a "normal" install being run off the hard drive, typically such errors are due to incorrect registry settings, and you would have to verify yours against those shown here:

HI ;I have been trying to install Adobe Acrobat (Versions 5, 6, and 7.0 pro) for the past 2 weeks now. I get the error 1606.could not access network location\Startup at the beginning of install.I have read posts that have suggested deleting, editing, and making changes to my registry and nothing seems to work. I have also tried the Microsoft windows clean up program and other resolutions at http://support.microsoft.com. Also I have checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\... and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\... ,but this problem hasn'd been solved. Can Anyone Help me?thanks

A:Error 1606 In Installation

Open regedit -> (Start - Run - type "regedit") and look for the following entry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office]

On the left side of the rightclick on "Office" and choose "export". You simply save the whole content under that folder into a file (lets say "office.reg") somewhere and then you delete that whole folder. When the Acrobat-installer checks for that registry enty and doesn't find it, it installs without any problems.
After everything is installed, you simply doubleclick on the previously exported office.reg file and thus import the deleted folder again.

Microsoft has a KB article for a similar problem with its own products:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549

In this, it seems that the registry values for several subkeys may be incorrect. In your case, you would want to look at the AppData key from the Vista table and verify that the value is:

downloaded microsoft windows install clean up utility, found it on the microsoft support site. (if you have xp use the NT version)

basically it removes the installation info fromt he registry. however it also invalidates those shortcuts that were giving you the porblem in the first place. but i was able to go directly to the msmoney.exe file and open it. and then i was able to recreate those shortucts.

so apparently it was a problem with window installer. not sure how it happened but go figure, it's fixed now.

I'm using Windows XP on a Compaq desktop. A couple of months ago I ran a-squared free anti-spyware. I quarentined what was found and everything seemed
normal. When I turned on the computer the next day the desktop background was changed and some icons were missing, but noticed there was a new icon
on the desktop of a folder labeled %SystemDrive%. My Documents had missing folders so I went to C:\Documents and settings and found them to transfer
them back to My Documents.

I didn't notice anything else wrong until last week I tried to update Adobe Reader and got the Error 1606 Could not access network location
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\ When trying to install\uninstall programs I
get the same error message. Also the Administrative Tools icon in the Control Panel just clicks but does not open.

Windows XP was installed on a new hard drive a couple of years ago. One fix suggested a problem with using Norton. I have not used Norton
on this computer. I'm running Avira AntiVi Personal. I have used the Microsoft Fit It 50356 "Fix it for me" for Error 1606, and the error message
continues to appear when trying to download Adobe Reader.

I haven't given up yet, because I know someone out there in the BC community has the answer.

Thanks,

Hi-

I've been updating some of my computers (the ones that run Vista that I never like to use) and I've been able to update Java on all of them except for one. They are all pretty much the same computer so I'm not sure where to start looking for the problem.

I've googled for the answer, and have used Java help resources online, but the solutions provided on Microsoft and Java sites don't help. I was able to uninstall the previous Java entry, but after that I still couldn't get the newest download to work from online or the download to desktop copy that is offered as an alternative for that error code.

Is there any place I can look next? I did find one log entry, but I don't understand it at all.

I'm using XP, and ran the Microsoft "Fix it for me" for Error 1606, and a-squared free and malwarebytes anti-malware. Now when I tried to install Adobe Reader, I got either Error 1606 Could not locate network
location %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User, or the one from above.

Thanks for any help,

When I attempt to install (or even update) most things, I get the following error:

"Error 1606. Could not access the network location %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\.

This is what that section of my registry looks like:

I can see its not there, but I'm not sure how to remedy the problem! I searched and read through the other threads on this problem, but they all seemed to have different error messages or registry names, and I was unable to solve my problem using their answers.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Thanks!

Hi,

My office enterprise 2007 was getting a bit buggy so I decided to uninstall it but when I tried to do so I kept on getting the following warning:

error 1606. Could not access network location :.

So I used revo uninstaller to remove it from my system which seemed to do the trick.

Anyway, I tried reinstalling it and got the same problem:

Error 1606. Could not access network location :.

I adjusted my registry according to this article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549, but that didn't work. I've put my registry back to how it was.

I've attached two text docs with what is in my usershell folders if that helps.

I would appreciate any help as I really need off

First report the full error message. It sounds like you are trying to repair this:

However, your error may reference a different path. What is it? I think those instructions are erroneous.

I tried to uninstall iTunes and received a message, so I found several items in the registry that had the wrong drive letter, so I fixed that. Now when I try to install iTunes or upgrade Quicktime, I get the above message, but it does not give me a clue as to what registry entry I need to repair (add?).

Can anyone help me figure out what registry is causing the problem or if it's something else? I would like to have iTunes installed and playable on my PC.

TIA,

Over at where I work, it looks like a number of unrelated applications have an issue with this when they try to install or configure themselves. I had thought it was a permission issue with non-admin users, but it appears to be related to UNC paths as the
errors no longer get thrown if I map a drive to a UNC share (e.g. N:\ mapped to \\fileserver\user) and change a user's profile to point to that drive path (e.g. N:\Desktop) instead of the UNC path (\\fileserver\user\Desktop). The same location, just mapped
to differently.
I had this problem initially documented here but absolutely nobody seems to have any idea (I've tried all of the commonly pointed
out fixes).
To copy and paste some part of it:

We use UEV to virtualise a user's profile. They log on and then the following mappings occur:

User files for their %homeshare% are stored on a network share, under \\fileserver\home$\username\ (e.g. Documents, Desktop, etc.)User settings for %appdata% are stored on a network share, under \\fileserver\setting$\username\
Each user has access to their own shares on the paths above and have full permissions over their area.

Has anyone got any thoughts or insight into this issue? It is just MSI installers and the errors thrown in the msi logs are to do with permissions or being unable to find the path.
Thanks!

Was this a Win7 backup image? If it was only made a month ago, could problems which caused you to reimage have already been present? I find that creeping corruption can begin right after install so keep a baseline image for cases like this.

You can try reimaging to see if it is a glitch with the operation or in the image itself. If this fail I would consider clean reinstalling following these steps to get a perfect baseline reinstall, then image it: Reinstalling Windows 7

I am having a huge problem. I really need some help on this, every other source I've looked for for help has not worked, and I really, really, really don't want to re-install Windows 7. Please, ANY help would be appreciated.

I use Seagate Manager software for backing up my files to an external hard drive. When I went to click on the "Custom Backup" utility today, it gave me a "paramter not accessible" error.

I then went to reinstall the Seagate Manager software. But when I went to uninstall it, it keeps giving me an "Error 1606: Could Not Access Network Location %PUBLIC%\Desktop\"

I have tried doing everything I can think of. I have followed instructions from people including but not limited to:

1. Deleting all the Seagate files in Program Files. They are no longer there, but the problem still persists.
2. Changing some registry values, although I haven't changed much and the problem still persists.
3. I have followed all the instructions on the Microsoft site for fixing this problem, including running their automated "Fix Me" tool, or whatever it's called. That hasn't worked either.

I've had a long standing problem with error 1606 installing software. I've uninstalled all net frameworks and all Microsoft software, then rebuilt everything numerous times. I thought I had this fixed after the last rebuild. The most common answer is the shellfolders key, but the folders pointed to must be present, too. Once I set the values to the true folders rather than %USERPROFILE% and that worked. I also used REG_SZ rather than REG_EXPAND_SZ.

To get rid of the 1606 error forever I want to write all the values as REG_EXPAND_SZ with %USERPROFILE% like all the documentation I've read says.

When I write values to the shellfolder key, they keep changing back. They change back to REG_SZ and the previous values. I've used reg files. I wrote vbscript. I booted with another operating system and loaded the hive. I booted to safe mode. They don't change back immediately, but one by one over time the values will start changing back. I tried setting the values, doing a bunch of disk reads to flush the cash, checked the values one last time, then did a motherboard reset. The values still changed back.

The Microsoft fix_it doesn't help. They change back after using that, too.

If I boot to safe mode and watch, they will not change back, except when I boot back normally.

I also tried changing the key ownership and removing update permission from the system user. Still no good.

So there are two things. The data is being persisted somewhere, and some process ... Read more

I've recently had Norton Anti-virus 2009 and when i went to get my live updates 3 of them wouldn't install.
I wasnt too worried about this because i figured i'd uninstall it and re-install it to see if it fixes the errors.
Instead of this being an easy task before it would finish updating i kept getting this error %PUBLIC%\Desktop\

i decided to get rid of Norton and use Avast because i dont have time to fool around, but now the problem has come back, and its stopping me from installing Windows Microsoft Office.
I cant run it from the disk so i opened the setup.exe folder as an admin to run it and i keep getting the Error: 1606 %PUBLIC%\Desktop\ message/
i cant find anything on it and all the forums i do find are for XP.

I'm also having trouble with my desktop because i cant rename my folders.
If i change the name it'll automatically switch back.
If i create a new folder and try to change the name it wont let me either.
It'll either switch back to New Folder or it'll say that folder name that i create doesnt exist.

Id appreciate it if anyone could help me

So I've been spending the last two days trying to figure out how to fix this. I recently restored my laptop back to factory defaults, but now whenever I try to using Windows Update to install Service Pack 1 I keep getting error 80073701 (ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING).

So I've been searching various tech forums and as far as I can see it's an issue with missing/corrupt language packs. I've tried using Microsoft's Fix It tool and the System Update Readiness Tool as well as running sfc /scannow from the command prompt with no luck.

I've tried running lpksetup.exe in order to remove the language packs (which as far as I can tell aren't installed at all), but I'm just getting told that they cannot be removed after a short amount of time with no error codes or usable information to follow up on that.

I've also read someplaces that I should remove certain earlier updates, but can't seem to find out which. Some say to remove all Windows Updates and Security Updates, but that's close to 150 updates and then I'd rather restore the OS once more.

Some places suggest trying to install all the missing language packs, and I'm hoping to avoid this as it is somewhat time consuming. First time I checked the CBS.log file it said I was missing the Finnish language pack. I installed that one, and now I'm missing the Bulgarian pack.

I'd gladly provide a zipped cbs.log, but that one is a good 400mb and I'm not quite sure how to reduce that in size.

A:Error installing Service Pack 1 (error 80073701)

Please reboot to Safe Mode and see if you can rename the existing CBS.log file - it should have archived itself by now unless there are severe problems with the system
Sometimes simply booting to Safe Mode will force the archiving - sometimes the file is corrupt, and cannot be archived.
Of that does the trick, delete the renamed file, then run another SFC /SCANNOW, and post the new CBS folder zipped.
