I am working in a university where we are trying to collect our first batch of electronic essays. Our markers use Word. I told the students they could send essays in .rtf format if they didn't have Word on their computer, but it seems that they are having all kinds of problems getting photos to save etc. Oops.

What would be the best advice to give to students who only have Works on their system?

I tried downloading the Microsoft converter program, and I can now open .wps files, however the pictures don't display. There was an error message advising me to "re-install Works", however this program doesn't have a de-install option.

Grateful for any advice!

Is there any handy way to convert from a works doc. to a word doc?

A:converting from works (wdb) to word

By using a file format converter in Microsoft Word, you can open documents that were created in Microsoft Works. After you open the document, you can save it in Word format.

On the File menu, click Open.
In the Files of type list, click Works 6.0 & 7.0.
If you don't see this option in the list

Install the file format converter as follows:
Exit all programs.
Do one of the following:
If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, double-click Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, double-click Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
In the Currently installed programs list, click either Microsoft Office 2003 or Microsoft Office Word 2003 (depending on whether you installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program), and then click Change.
The Configuration Wizard opens.

On the Maintenance Mode Options page, click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
If you installed Word as part of Office, then on the Custom Setup page, select the Choose advanced customization of applications check box, and then click Next.

On the Advanced Customization page, click the plus sign (+) next to Office Shared Features.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Converters and Filters, and then click the plus sign (+) next to Text Converters.
Click the arrow next to Works for Windows 7.0, and then click Run from My Computer.
The file format converter is installed.

A:Converting WPS or Works files to Word Documents

WordPerfect and Works are 2 completely different animals -- although last time I looked, Works word processor files did have "wps" extensions. Which program are you actually using?

(Whichever, you should be able to go File > Save As, then set an option for file type [to save as] -- if there's an RTF option, Word should handle the output ... although you may lose some features if your original file is, err, "elaborate")

Does anyone noe weather vista Microsoft word support the old formated ones? Or is there any plug-in needed to support?

A:Does Vista Microsoft Word Support Old Format Microsoft Word?

I'm assuming you're talking about the new office 2007? meaning word 2007?

If that is the case, then yes it does run older versions of word. In the sense that if you have a word document that was made and saved in Word 2003 it would work in 2007.

Just like when you make something in word 2007 you are able to save it as a Word 03-07 document so it works on both versions of Microsoft Word.

My son says you are the best for troubleshooting, so here goes. I have a Toshiba laptop wireless and all the programs came pre-installed with a Recovery disk ONLY included. I have Windows XP Home Edition. My problem is with the Microsoft Works 8.0 Calendar, which was pre-installed along with Microsoft Office S&T Edition, which I do not use. The Calendar was working fine until yesterday and now I get an error message that just says "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then I can choose whether or not to send an error report, which I have....several times. I've read the "official" Microsoft version of the fix, but it is telling me that I possibly have a corrupted file and to reinstall it from the Works CD, which I do not have. When I run the recovery CD, there is no Microsoft Works listed in programs to recover. I'm really at a loss! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!! MomM

We have two older computers, both with Microsoft Works - as well as Word. Our newer laptop has stand alone Word 2013. I would like to know how to copy a WDB document on flash drive and put it on the laptop with Word 2013.
Thanks

A:Converting a Microsoft WDB to a Word document

If you can save the file on the older computer as a .csv file it will open in Excel if you have that on the laptop. As far as I'm aware .wdb files are database documents so you'll probably struggle to open it in any word processing program without the use of a third party file converting program. I could well be wrong there though.

I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer.  I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.

I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel.  However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish.  I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.

I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC.  However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).

I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem.  I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... I have an older version of MS Works (I don't have Word). I've also written a full-length novel, and am concerned about saving it to a disk for submission to agents/publishers. In my Save As window, I have a drop-down menu with a choice of formats to save in. One of them is Word (Generic). Does this mean that, if I save it in that format, anyone with MS Word should be able to open it without sentences, paragraphs, etc. being skewered? Agents and publishers are very picky about how something is submitted, and will likely throw away a disk which can't be easily read. Any thoughts would be appreciated

I am not too bright about this stuff, but I have a similar problem. My old PC had Works 4.5 and all my text info. is in Wordpad. But apparently it was saved in Word 6.0 (that's one choice in the drop-down menu). My new XP system has Service Pack 2 that will not open any of my old files. I was told by the tech. that RTF (Rich Text) should be OK. You might try just one sample page saved in .RTF and see if the publisher will accept it.
Sorry I don't have a real answer for you.
For real fun, I wrote a book in Japan. Try working with a Japanese publisher who has a limited knowledge of English and my limited Japanese.
Good luck,

Hi

I've got Word at work and the Windows XP(home edition) Works word processor at home -- but they don't seem to be compatiable when I bring a disk home with a Word file.

Any tips?

A:Microsoft Works and Word -- compatible??

In Word 2000, there's a Save As Works 2000 option. If your file is anything other than very basic, you'll be prompted that "some features may be lost". I just tried it with a Word doc containing a table (Works WP files doesn't do tables), sure enough it came out pretty screwed.

You could always download OpenOffice for use at home -- it opened the file (Word version) no problem.

I bought my computer in 2008ish, maybe 2009, and it came with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It also came with pre-installed software, and of those pre-installed software included Microsoft Works Word Processor. I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit last week, and I have been painstakingly installing my programs back after I messed up the installation. First, I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, then I realized I put in the wrong disc so I then put in Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, then I upgraded to Ultimate 64-bit. All my programs got messed up in the process and I basically have a clean install of Windows 7 with a Windows.old folder containing my programs in a folder, which all need to be re-installed. I can see my Microsoft Works Word Processor, but it won't let me run the installation on it. I tried running it in compatibility modes for every available option, but nothing works. I also ran it as an administrator. How can I legally re-install these programs I purchased? I have tons and tons of .wps files that I want to be able to open with a program I purchased with my computer. Yes, I have heard of OpenOffice and it does not support .wps files. I do have Microsoft Office Professional 2013 installed, but it can't seem to open .wps files (unless I'm wrong).

A:Microsoft Works Word Processor

Microsoft Office 2013 is capable of opening Works 6-9 documents in a Compatibility mode.

To do that in Word 2013 you need to go File - Open - Computer - Browse.
In Open window you have to select a filter:
All files (*.*) or Works 6 - 9 Document (*.wps)

Hi Everyone,I did a quick search of the forums and didn't come up with anything similar to the problem I've just started having with MS Word.I'll be working on a document and saving my work every so often. Then all of a sudden Windows starts telling me that it can't save the file. I goofed and didn't think quick enough to get a screen shot of that message. However, I was able to copy past everything, from the document I was trying to save, to a new document, which is what I did as I had already had the same thing happen to me a couple of times before. Then when I clicked 'Yes' I get "This" message.OK, so then I click 'No on exit to close the document and got "This" asking if I wanted to save the changes to the document. Then I Just click No because that's the only option that will let me close that application. Then when I try to open it again I get "This" dreaded message.Have any of you guys ever run into anything like this before? It doesn't seem to matter if the document only has ten pages or if it has one hundred ten pages. Nor does it seem to matter if I have a lot of images in it or none at allI am at a loss as to what to do to prevent this form happening in the future. At least I have a work around that I can use so as not to lose my entire document..., but this is still just a bit nerve wercking. Thanks for any help or advice guys.Wendy

but open a new file of the word processor and click save and then check the drop down under

2) Is it posible to download Word on the internet? How can I get Word on my computer? Or how can I send a document to someone who only has Word so that they can open it?

Thanks!

I suspect DEP isnt turned off or it wouldn't be able to "shut down word". You can however, simply add word to DEP's exception list and it will ignore it.

Hello - I copied a file from someone's computer onto a floppy. When I put the floppy in my machine I received this message " Works cannot open the file because the file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt." The computer I copied the file from is running windows XP. The computer I tried to open the file on is running Windows me. The windows me computer does have microsoft works word processor installed on it . So It should be able to open the program. Both computers were purchased within a year and a half so programs should be compatible. I have tried opening the file with Word but that doesn't work either. Any suggestions? Just for clarity the file I cannot open is from " Microsoft works word Processor.

My system is Windows XP and I feel my computer user level is just basic. I have lost all the history in my Microsoft Works(7.0) Word Processor. (no clue how it got lost)When I go to My Documents I can see all the files from history but I cannot open any of them. When I try to open a file it directs me to buy Word Perfect(R) 11 software with an upgrade to Word Perfect 12 for $99.00. Should I buy the software? Is there a way to move the files back into the Word Processor history? Next to each file in My Documents it says WPEntrust Signed Document.

A:Microsoft Works Word Processor History

MS Works has nothing to do with Word Perfect! MS Works is related to MS Office. If you are looking for your documents, have you tried launching Works and going to File/Open to see what is there? Perhaps you had a trial version of Word Perfect in your computer, too. If you like the word processor in Works, perhaps you should upgrade to Word 2007 instead -- Word is a much larger, more diversified program than the abbreviated version in Works.

Hi,

I am in Works 7.0, and have installed PictureIt, Encarta, Money and MS Word 2002. I can launch all of these programs from the MS Works Launcher, with the exception of MS Word. When I try to launch MS Word, I get the following error :

"The Works Launcher cannot access the task you selected. Files needed to start the program may be missing, corrupted, or may have been deleted. " (etc.)

There is not much help online for this, and what there is seems to refer back to issues with Norton Anti-virus. Problem there is that I don't have Norton installed on my PC.

I am running this under Windows 7, and have tried "run as administrator", as well as running it in XP SP3 compatibility mode.

Any help appreciated.

Hello,This is another problem that I've been having with Microsoft Works Word Processor. I tried to get help with this a long time ago, but it was never really resolved, from what I remember. For some reason, whenever I try to open a document that has previously been saved, reopened at a later date, and re-saved, I get this message every time I open it again. I just end up hitting save again and replacing the original copy with the new copy even though they are exactly the same. Previously, a "helper" on Bleeping Computer told me they thought it was happening because my computer was shutting down on it's own, but this is not always the case. Anyway, here's the message:Thanks,Michele

Hi

For some reason I can no longer open Microsoft Works Word Processor or any of the files I created using this programme. When I try to do so I get the following error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

I uninstalled the programme and then re-installed it subsequently but still have the same problem. All other programmes in the suite such as Microsoft Calender, Database, Spreadsheet etc. are all opening OK.

If anyone can throw some light on this issue I would be most grateful.

I reset the Microsoft Works Word Processor to default with a different font size. It worked fine. Then, while setting up a printing for envelopes, I tried to reset that as a default as well. Big mistake. Now when I open the word processor program it comes up as the envelope function and I cannot get the original page for letter writing back. Microsoft was no help when I accessed their web page (too far over my head in their explanations as well as being not too user-friendly for my level of understanding). Does anyone know how I can get it open the right way again? I use Window's Vista on an Acer Extensa 5620. Thanks.

A:Solved: Microsoft Works Word Processor

This only applies for the Works word processor, the common one in Works NOT spelled with a capital W, as in Word.

First, only do this with the Work word processor not going.
If you really only want one default word processing template in Works (and it sounds like you do), and if you have no other templates that you want (and it sounds like you don't) then you can just delete all templates in this folder:
C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\Template\
Then, just start up the word processor and see if it is fixed.

If that is not the case, just let me know and I will adjust and tell you what else you can do, instead.

Hello, I'm not very good with computers so bare with me please

I am a university student and today when I went to open my class notes in Microsoft Works Word Processor I found nothing but a blank page. The file was still there, with the exact same name, but all the text was gone. The document contained 15 hours of lecture notes needed for an exam in 6 days, so I'm naturally pretty anxious for help. I have since turned my computer on and off. I have tried converting the file to rich text format and back, to no avail. The size of the document says a mere 16 kb now as well.

I opened the seemingly blank document with notepad, and found a bunch of jargon along with 2 interesting clues. One was very small pieces of my class notes here and there, in between the coding and jargon. The second was towards the end of the coding, where it said various random things about my HP printer. I did perform a printer test today, and was wondering if that did anything to delete or corrupt my notes.

I performed a system reset back to 5 PM (the file appeared blank at 6 PM, when it said it was last modified). The file is still blank. I have also checked through the recycle bin, nothing. I've got Windows Vista, and my computer is a Gateway Notebook, 5 months old.

These notes are very important to me and my grade in this class. I have backed up material from 3 weeks ago, but with 3 hour classes i would still be missing a lot of material >_<. Any help is much appreciated, than... Read more

Is there a way to set the font and color to be locked and never change even if I click a word or line that has a different font and color?

If you like, you can try the "global" fix. Go to www.piersontech.com/07-CleanHardDrive.htm

Hi there guys.
Okay so here's the issue.
I have an HP Pavillion a813w that had Microsoft Works pre-installed on my computer.

Now, I just did a roll back, totally reformated my computer on April 10th to total factory settings once more, so my computer is relatively unbuggy, or so I thought.
However, when I was sent a document from a friend today via AIM, and I scanned it with my virus scanner, it was clean. It had me say yes, I agree to the EULA, and then as it was loading up, it just seemed to disappear, I couldn't open up the document, and I have tried rebooting, and restoring both and it would do nothing.

I'm wondering if there's a reason for this..

I'm trying to figure this out, first time I've ever had Works do this, before I reformated that is.

I just started using Word 2007 and am having some difficulty adjusting to the changes.

Specifically, I have created a lot of forms in Word 2003 by using text boxes and dropdown lists. After creating these forms, I protected the documents and other people within my organization use them as templates, i.e. performance review forms, OSHA First Report of Injury.

My problem is that I can't convert some of the forms to 2007. Sometimes the 2007 Protect Document feature works great and other times it doesn't work at all. I really don't undertstand what the problem is.

I tried to upload the form here but I received an error message which said that the format was invalid.

I decided to rip my DVD collection to my hard drive before going to college. I'm nearly out of room and would like to back up some files just in case anything happens to my laptop. The files were ripped with DVDFab 5. Any help would be great. Thanks.

A:Converting to AVI format

AVI is just a container - you can stick virtually any codec inside that container so you need to decide on the codec you want to convert both the video and the audio to. Your easiest bet will probably be to handbrake (that's the name of the app) those files to .264+mp3 - but I'm not sure how much easier or more difficult it will be now that your disks are already ripped. I'm not familiar with how DVDFab5 rips DVDs at all.

Have you tried the DVD Shrink / DVD Encrypter combo? Maybe that will convert it?

Hi,
I have an iso which I would like to convert for DVD Players format. After running a web search, I found that dvdSanta can do the job. Still, dvdSanta accepts input exclusively from a CD/DVD drive. Since my file is residing on my HD, and I don't like the idea of a two-step DVD media burning, one from my HD to a DVD disk, two from this DVD disk in ISO format to DVD format via dvdSanta, I hoped to find a way to set a virtual DVD drive, copy the ISO file to it, input it to dvdSanta, and output it to a DVD media.
I tried Paragon CD-ROM Emulator, but failed either in copying the file to this virtual disk or in finding a way for inputting the file from the virtual disk to dvdSanta.
Can you suggest a way of converting a DVD ISO file to a DVD format to be burned on a DVD media?

A friend of mine recently asked me about converting Mastroska to Avi.
Personally ive never needed to do this myself but said i would look into it.
Was wondering if anyone has done it before and could share what you did or had a site that already had steps to take.

I have looked at a few sites and ive found these two so far that seemed to be okay.

1)http://www.riverpast.com/en/support/tutorials/convert/mkv/avi.php

2)http://www.ehow.com/how_2084239_convert-mkvmatroska-video-avi.html?ref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art

Just wanted to get a couple opinions before i delve into this to much

-Thanks

I need to convert some videos that were recorded with video surveillance software with the .dvr extension to some other format that can be viewed by any windows media player. I have videos of someone stealing off my property and the police would like a copy. I have tried using windows media center but it will not open the files. My only other alternative is to let the police use my laptop with my software on it to view the files so they can prosecute. Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: converting .dvr to .avi or other format.

VLC. Plays just about any media file with no codec worries, and will also allow the police to see the footage 'untouched'.
If you really need to convert, try Handbrake, converts almost anything to m4v, which WMP can handle.

Why choose WP?
If you are looking for Yahoo! .DAT files, then search for Yahoo! decoder.

See if this helps:

Hi,
I looked thru a ton of posts and did a search, but still need help with a video conversion... I know almost zilch about video stuff, thought you should know that. Things like codecs and file formats are pretty much all greek to me....but I try!!

I did see several online programs where you can download a video FROM 'youtube'...what I need to do is download a video TO youtube.

I am creating a page on youtube with a player that will hold several horse race videos. I have a web site, but since I don't know much about video stuff, but do know they can slow page load times considerabley, I will put a link from my web site to my page at youtube so visitors can view these races.
One particular race was hard for me to find, and the only one I found is at another web site, not youtube. The video plays in Real Player, but the file extention for the video is 'ivr.'

Youtube, and probably any other video hosting site, doesn't recognize this extention, so I cannot get the thing to download to my youtube page.
I've done a zillion searches to get some info so I can do this, but alas...I come up blank....and actually have installed, then uninstalled several converter programs...they either can't convert this ivr. or I can't figure out how to run the program.

I am desperate and hope someone here can please help me.

In case you need to see the video, here is a link directly to it:

A:converting ivr. format video

.ivr is RealMedia's proprietary content format. It comes as part of the Real Media 11 player.

Audio conversion is simple--you have to buy Real Media Player Plus and then it will allow conversion to .mp3.
Video conversion I did not check out so I don't know if it works the same way or not, but Real.com holds the answer to your question. I've seen a few converters for other real media formats but none for the .ivr.
