Microsoft Word 2003 drop down menus

Q: Microsoft Word 2003 drop down menus

I am trying to create a letter template that has drop downs in it so that a user can choose which paragraph to put in the letter.

I can create one by using the Drop down form field but it will only let me put a certain amount of text in there.

Is there a way I can do this?

I dont want to do auto texts just the drop down.

Any help would be really really appreciated.

Thanks very much.

ok, this is the strangest I have seen in awhile. Just re-installed a fresh copy of Microsoft Office 2003 from the original disk. It installed with no problem and opens fine, however, when selected the drop down menus are invisible??? You can see only a faint outline but nothing to select (meaning you cannot save or perform any other functions, OR right click on anything and a menu appear. And then, sometimes the START menu in windows bar, will not show either when the other is acting up. I have never seen this before. I have tried running Malware, and currently running Avira ANtiVir. I have unloaded and reloaded office 2x now with no effect. This is WIndows XP Professional

I'm using Word 2003 to make forms. This problem has just cropped up. When I make a dropdown list everything seems fine. However when I go to use the list you cannot make the first item on the list show up when you click on it. If you move another item to the top of the list then it becomes the item which you can't click on. It's on the list just nothing happens. I ran the Office repair program but it made no difference

I am running microsoft Word on a NEC laptop o/s XP professional.

When working on a word document the dropdown menus (file, edit, view etc) will drop down without being selected or having the cursor anywhere near. Neither have the shortcuts ie: "alt F" "alt e" been touched. They sometimes drop down when neither keyboard or mouse are being touched.

A full updated virus scan with McAfee has been done.

A:word - drop down menus

Sounds like Office may have the "speech to text" option enabled, in "command mode"

The laptop may have a built-in microphone, which is picking up background noise and interpreting it as commands.

A long shot, but it would explain the activity.

Disable the feature, or the microphone?

A:word 2000 drop down menus causes it to crash!!!!

Is this in all Office applications or just one? If it's Word, problems of that sort are fixed about 95% of the time by doing a search of the harddrive for "" and deleting all found. Word will create a new one next time it's opened. (It's a hidden file so be sure "Show hidden files and folders" is checked in Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab), the global template for Word, isn't installed when Word is installed; it's created the first time Word is opened. That's why a reinstall won't affect

I am looking to create a diagram in Word 2003 and want to know if it is possible to have a word or symbol in that diagram that has a drop down table or listing linked to it that appears when you click on that word or symbol and is hidden when you click again. I know I could do something similar using hyperlinks but this would mean moving to another location in the document as far as I know. What I really would like to have is the drop down table embedded in the page itself to make it easier for the user.

Obviously web pages offer this type of functionality but is it possible to do this in good old Word 2003?

Any help much appreciated

PS Not sure if this helps but similar to the Excel functionality that allows you to insert a comment to a cell that appears when you hold the cursor over that cell but disappears from view when you move off it. I have tried creating what I want in Excel and pasting it into a Word doc but then lose the comment functionality

Hello everyone,

I have been using drag & drop to grab text and graphics from the internet and put them into Word (or Excel) since I can remember. It works fine in XP & Vista, but it won't work in Windows7. I get a message on my Word status bar "Cannot drop at current location". My mouse icon also changes to the circle with a slash through it. If I try to drag & drop to Excel, my icon changes, but I don't get a message.

I am able to copy the material using copy & paste keystokes and / or mouse strokes.

On Vista & W7, I'm running the same setup: Office Pro 2003 & Internet Explorer 8. I've checked all the options in Word & IE and they are the same on both systems.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi hope you can help and my apologies in advance for lack of using the proper tech words for things.

About a week ago I started to have problems with my right click menus, drop down boxes and ability to close browser and browser popups.

The problem is intermittent and seems to happen once I have been online for a while rather than at start up.

When I right click, the menu either doesn’t come up at all, or is empty, ghosted out, with just a vague outline of the frame.

When I encounter a drop down box option, I click on it and no menu drops down.

And as said above, when this is happening, I have to close browser and pop up boxes via the task manager.

When this started I immediately did 2 full virus scans, spybot & adaware scan, plus I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti Malware and did a full scan with one find, details below:

I have created in Microsoft Word 2003 on an XP OS some lengthy documents. I created them using a view setting of 150%.

I sent them to my employer, who is using Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 97. My boss opened them with his system and they displayed on the screen at a view of 200%. He wants me to send him Word documents that he can open from the CD-R that I send that will automatically display at 100% view on the screen so that he does not have to set the view for each document as it displays.

So what is the answer.

Is there a way that I can save my created documents so that when my boss gets them on a CD-R that they will open on his system at a view setting of 100%.

Is there also a way that his system can be set to default to 100% in reading from the CD-R.

My boss does not want to copy the documents to the system hard disk from my sent CD-R, preferring to read and copy directly from the CD-R that I send, so that the original documents will not accidentally be changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to create a toolbar button with a drop-down to provide several functions/options - similar to the way the Highlight and Font Color buttons work on the standard Formatting toolbar.

I can easily add a drop-down menu to a toolbar using Customize>Commands>New Menu and dragging the New Menu command to the toolbar, but there's no way to replace the menu name with a button image.

I also tried dragging a standard Word drop-down button (such as the Font Color drop-down button) to the toolbar and changing the drop-down options (that works fine), but there appears to be no way to change the button image.

Any ideas?

I am using MS Word 2003 and I have a problem with an item appearing dozens of times in the drop down section of the tools menu.

When clicking tools "mail merge" appears dozens of times and it is necessary to scroll down for some considerable time until the rest of the drop down appears.

I have had this problem for a while (I suspect it was another programme I was using some time ago - that is no longer used) and is also left over from when I was using word 2000).

Since its original appearance, I have uninstalled office, reinstalled and now upgraded to office 2003.

I suspect a registry entry somewhere, but I have searched in vain.

Any ideas on how to fix it.

Hi All:

I am running windows XP version 2002, service Pack2
I am using Microsoft Word 2002 (10.6829.6830) SP3

I have a form that has been created in microsoft word by corporate that they want us to use for documentation. The form contains several grey alphanumeric fields, as well as many yellow "drop-down" style fields.

I am having a problem transfering the completed form into our text-only note system. The procedure I am using is as follows:

1. I fill in the information to the alphanumeric fields, and select the items I want from the drop-down fields
2. Under the tools menu I select "unprotect document"
3. Under edit, I select "select all"
4. Copy with hotkeys CTRL+C
5. Click into text only space with mouse, Paste with CTRL+V.

The Problem is that once I have pasted, while the alphanumeric information is still there, there is nothing but a blank space where the information from the drop-down fields should be. I am thoroughly convinced that I am overlooking something incredibly menial and arbitrary, but I have so far been unsuccesful in locating the source of my error either in the Office Help, or in any previous forum threads I have been googling. Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Would help if we knew the OS and browser you are using, but if you are using Firefox or IE7 and have it set to use your colors instead of the Web site's colors, you'll get the transparent background on the Search drop down.

AFAIK, you'll have to set it to use the Web page's specified colors to fix that.

I've recently loaded IE9 onto my system and seem to be getting problems with dropdown menus since doing this.

The first I've noticed is when typing into the google home page search box. I get the drop down menu showing possible searches I'm looking for, which highlite when I move the cursor to them but nothing happens when I click on one (although it works perfectly from the google toolbar).

The second area is on google maps. If I right click on a map it brings up the windows context menu rather than the maps context menu. Right clicking a few more times then brings up both.

Never had this before the change to IE9.

Can anyone help

With Word, I have words that i use that are correct, but it keeps underlining them in red and i know you can add the words into its dictionary so that this doesn't happen for those words anymore. I forgot on where you do it, i know i should know as i've been using word since Office '95. I just always click on ignore. Someone did tell me once, but i need my memory refreshed.

A:Microsoft Word 2003 - Need Help

The easiest way I found was to run spell check and when the pop up dialog box appears on words not in Word's dictionary( red squigglies) , there is an option to ignore, change, etc., or "add to dictionary". It is there that I make a decision whether to add or not, and I add it to the general dictionary. Check the HELP to determine how to set up a *special* dictionary, if that is what you want to do, just for these words.
Hope this helps.

Hum.. You want to insert a mathematical expression in your text? Or do you want Word to calculate a quare root for you?

In case of the former, you have to install an Office component called Equation Editor.
If you have that, then you can do Insert->Object->Create New->Microsoft Equation

Otherwise, you can always draw the formula in Paint and then copy-paste to Word

Running Windows XP2
For a while now I have been having problems such as:

When I click back - it goes back 2 windows,
when I click forward it goes forward 2 windows,
when I click on a dropdown menu it pops back up.
When I back space It hesitates and then there appear briefly a black area before the words I were backspacing out of are gone. This seems to happen mostly when I am on a certain local site where I am doing record research for my job.
When I want to drag and drop it does not always get a good hold and I have to repeat the process.
When I delete emails it will sometimes delete 2 of them.

This does not happen all the time, but often enough to be really annoying.

So I decided to make a new library for work called "Work" and I was going to put all of my stuff for my job in that library instead of having it in the Documents library like I have had for awhile now. However, whenever you create a new library and add a folder to it, there is a drop down menu for each folder in the library that allows you to expand and condense that particular folder which would come in handy for libraries with many folders but not for libraries with only a couple of folders. I would like to get rid of this drop down menu. I have attached a pic with my Music library next to my Work library and highlighted the drop down menu thing that I would like to get rid of.

Also, if you modify any of the existing 4 libraries then this drop down menu appears as well and the only way to get it to go away is to go into the libraries properties and click restore defaults and then ok and then go back to the properties and do the same thing again. I don't need the public folders in the libraries as they are not used but if I delete them from the library list then this drop down menu appears. I could just delete them completely from the computer if all else fails. Sorry this is a long explanation and it probably has been answered elsewhere but I couldn't find a solution. I'd like to know how to get rid of that annoying drop down menu.

Thanks for the help!

The main navigation menu has drop downs on two of the main menu items but the drop downs don't show on my PC. Not on IE, Firefox or Chrome.

I know that the drop downs are there because I had a friend look at the website and they show on his PC. Also I can see the sub menus using Firebug in Firefox. Although the sub menus show up as grey in colour.
See attached screenshots. the one shows the main menu item and the other shows one of the sub menu items......curiously that also shows no value under the Computed box...

Unfortunately I'm using a loan PC because my PC was recently stolen. It is only running Windows 7 Starter.
Also, this weekend I reloaded Chrome because it was running very slowly.

When I look at my other client websites with drop down menus they work absolutely perfectly.

Please can you help me find the problem.

Hi - I can't control most of the drop down menus on my firefox browser. For instance I could not fill in your profile page. I am not a novice but I'm pretty unskilled as a computer user. When I click it flickers and won't allow me to chose any but the first choice in a menu. If I click and use a down arrow on the keyboard I can sometimes get to the choice I want but when I go to choose it it reverts to the first in the list. I tried scanning with both Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security. On the error lists were many ( 60 or 70 )
errors. I deleted these and rescanned and my systems was supposed to be Malware free. But I tried and the menus still didn't work. I tried in Safe Mode and they didn't work. I uploaded all my files to Malwarebytes which is supposed to scan for virus before they back up files so I have that as a resource.

This is only happening in designer Media sites and with different skins. Any time I click on a link with a drop down menu, i.e., Quick Links it appears for a split second and disappears.
This didn't happen when I tried some dark or black skins. I normally use Seven Blue. I have tries both 32 and 64 bit versions of IE9 and both have the same issue.

A:Drop-down menus disappear

Several things can cause this. A virus > scan for virus/spyware. R-Mouse button stuck.
Outdated Java scripts > update/enable Java. Most likely you just need to clear your cache.

For some reason the drop down menus on all my programs have all suddenly slowed down and I have to run my mouse pointer over them to see what the menu options are. Any ideas what the cause could be? I've recently cleared some space on my disk, so maybe I accidentally moved an important file - I don't think so, but it's a possibility!

Check Task Manager to make certain something hasn't pegged your CPU usage to 100%.

Yes. On any webform, when you make a selection of any field. Have the field still highlighted/active. On using the Arrow keys, you can change the drop down selection.

I have a problem where Word 2003 crashes when I open a document, especially if that document is an email attachment, or something I havn't authored, it happens about 95% of the time. It usually freezes and i can't type, or use my mouse on the page, i usually have to right click on the window bar to close the window. It then pops up a window that I have chosen to close the unresponsive program and asks me to send notification to microsoft. I have dloaded all the latest security packs etc., checked the msoft website, visrus checked and run the office recovery software as well and havn't had any luck in fixing the problem.

I bought a new Dell XPS 420 with Microsoft Works Plus 2003 preinstalled. Everything works fine except Word 2003. Certain things I try to do take forever. For instance, trying to insert a chart, print anything, copy and paste something into Word, and several other things can take 60 seconds or more to load. During this time, the program is basically froze until it completes. If I try to close it, I get the ever present ?program not responding? message.

Hi there,

I asked a similar question before in that it involved Microsoft Word 2003; and I have another in a related vein now. Is it okay/or safe to have 100 and more pictures in one .doc file? I don?t mean that the pictures here are ?as-is? -- in other words, big pictures -- but they are in fact shrunken down in the document ? sort-of like small stills, lined up. Is this okay to do?

A:Care with using Microsoft Word 2003

I don't see why there would be ay issues having that many images in one file.
At least if anything, it would be up to the computer, not MS Word, MS Word is made for large documents, if required in the office.

I have a new laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. I'm running Microsoft Office 2003 and want to change the file, but I can't get at it. Windows Explorer tells me it's at C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\, but I don't see andy AppData in the Users\Owner display. Currently to open a Word file, I basically go through C - Users - Owner - My Documents - WORD.DOC

I have similar ACCESS.DOC, EXCEL.DOC, PDF.DOC, PPT.DOC folders in My Documents to get into files for those Microsoft Office programs. in Microsoft Word 2003

In Explorer go to Tools menu, Folder Options, View, then make sure to enable Show Hidden Files Folders and Drives.

Otherwise you wont' see AppData.

Also select to Set all Folders with those settings.

Hi, I've been having this problem with MS Word 2003 for a little bit.

What happens is, I open the application, and the Word box pops up like it's about to open like it should, but then it takes forever to open, maybe over 10 minutes or so, unless I just end the process like I usually do since it takes so long.

The only thing I've noticed different about anything when I open it is, Navw32.exe starts running, and if i end that, an alert window opens that says "The document C:\Documents and Settings\David Solis\Application Data\Microsoft\Normal\ is still infected. Do you want to delete this file?". I'll click no, and Word opens.

Any idea what any of this is, why it's doing it, and how to stop it? Thanks!

I have never had a problem with Microsoft Word until now. I can use Word fine on my computer. In the past week or so, however, when I send Microsoft Word documents to people, sometimes they say they can open them and sometimes they say they can’t open them. It depends on the person. On some of my e-mail clients (I have multiple e-mail accounts), I can open the files I send myself (i.e. I will send an e-mail to my multiple e-mail accounts and I will attach Word documents to that e-mail. On some clients I can open the files I send myself, and others I can’t...I did a check disk /r (checkdisk repair) on March 9 and it fixed the problem. I could send Word documents and everyone could download them and I could send Word documents to myself and download them via AOL Mail, Yahoo, and everything. And then the problem came back again. When I click on the file in the mail client that doesn’t read the documents correctly, the attachment comes up as saying that the mail client interprets the .doc file as being related to Notepad (specifically listing Notepad as the program it wants to open the file in), not Word. Then when I try to open it (either straight from the e-mail or after downloading the file back to my hard drive), it tries to open in word and gives me the converter message. When it was working for a little while on March 9, the way I knew a Word document would work correctly even before trying to open a file is that Mail would list it as being a Word doc... A:Microsoft Word 2003 nightmare

I haven't read nor absorbed your entire message.
There's one thing that comes to mind immediately - your clients may have slightly different Word. If they have 2007, you need to send them the 2007 version or have them open as previous version (if possible).

Long ago there was an office update which added some sort of converter to my Office2003. Perhaps if you save as some other than 2003 .doc it would work. That update permitted me to open a document or two someone sent me.

Edited: what is one supposed to do with that megaupload site? All I see to pay lots of UK currency. I'm willing to try to open your
files in my Office2003 but not under those conditions.

I have a friend how has a problem with Word 2003. It could be happening in Excel and PowerPoint, but she doesnít use those so we donít know.

Word opens fine, and if you find a file you want to open through My Computer or Windows Explorer, and you double-click it the file opens quickly.

However, if you attempt to open a document through the following method you run into a problem. If you open Word, click the Open button or go File >> Open, and than click the Look in: drop down arrow to browse to a different location it takes between 7 and 10 seconds for the menu to drop down. This happens every time when you first attempt to do this after opening Word. If I leave Word open and do it again itís fine (if I remember correctly).

The problem persists, however, as I choose a new drive to look at and begin double-clicking on folders to open them. Iíll get a 7 to 10 second delay attempting to open some folders, and virtually no delay when attempting to open others. For the most part, however, there is a delay. Just like I stated above with the Look in: drop down menu, however, once Iíve gone into a folder this way it opens up very quickly from that point on, as long as I donít close Word. If I close Word the problems start up again.

I tried a number of things to resolve the issue. I started Word in safe mode and that didnít work. I tried turning off DDE something or other by going Control Panel >> Folder Options >> File Types, choosing DOC, clicking Advan... Read more

For example, when I go to my hotmail wesite and click on the button that reads "Put In Folder", the resulting menu is transparent so that the text material which would be covered over by the drop down menu if it weren't transparent still shows, with the result that there are two sets of texts which overlap and conflict, making it sometimes difficult, sometimes impossible, for me to read the items in the drop down menu. I'm only using Hotmail as an example because this happens regularly with drop down menus. It doesn't happen, for example, when I click on a button up in the toolbar, such as Edit, Tools, etc.; in that case, the drop down menu is not transparent. This only happens when I use Firefox. It doesn't happen when I use IE6. But I need Firefox because of the fact that with Firefox I can always increase the size of the fonts by holding down Ctrl and using the wheel on my mouse. I need that because of my poor eyesight. (Using IE6, I can do that on some websites and not on others.)I have Windows XP Home Edition.Any suggestions as to what the problem is, and the solution? Thanks, grandpaw7Moderator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

I have a weird problem on my PC in that on many (but not all) drop-down menus, when I click the arrow to drop a menu it drops but then immediately closes again before I can even get my mouse moving into the options available - and this happens repeatedly. I may be able to get it to open once in every five or six attempts if I am lucky. This is mainly on dialogue boxes where most drop-down menus are found although not all. For example Word dialogues I have no problems at all.

I've done some searching around and found details of the MS System File Checker and done a scan. This seemingly found corrupt files and repaired them AND produced a 12.5MB log file. However, I still have the problem.

More searching found it could be due to multiple mice found in Device Manager (DM). Looking in my DM I found six entries under Human Interface Devices labelled "HID-compliant device" with no explanation of what they relate to. As far as I am aware I should not expect to find any more two at most, these being a mouse (Logitech optical mouse) and a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I uninstalled the tablet leaving just the mouse and rebooted but I still have five such entries. I also have two unexplained entries under "Mice and other pointing devices" labelled "USB Input Device" - a third such entry is labelled "USB Input Device (Logitech Download Assistant)"

Whilst my tablet was uninstalled and indeed disconnected, I did some further checks using just the mou... Read more

Hi, I am new to this forum and have pasted and copied the question from a previous thread. This seems to be a similar problem to the one that I am experiencing and I didn't know the terminology. I don't have message screens appearing but dropdown menus are popping up when I type. I can't work out if it's just certain keys as there doesn't seem to be any consistency to it. When I log on I keep getting a dropdown menu saying something about "left or right typing" and unicode characters. I've done a system restore and it hasn't resolved it. It's been happening for weeks but is very on/off. It has however been getting worse in last few days to point where I can't type at all for the dropdown menus and the beeps going off!! I wondered if it was anything to do with these sticky/filter key things but none of my boxes are checked so doesn't seem to be that. I am worried that it could be my laptop hardware - acer pc - 6 months old.
My os is windows xp.

thanks in advance.

I can't figure this one only happens when I'm using IE, not Firefox (I know, the solution to my problem would be to not use IE, but it still bugs me that I can't figure out what's going on...). The problem is only with my home computer (IE7, Win XP Pro) not my computer at work or anywhere else, and they are all set up the same...

When I come to a web page that has a drop-down menu (as an example, go to the FAQ page, the kind of menu under "Matching Options" and "Search In"...) the menu gets blocked as a pop-up, with the pop-up alert bar at the top of the page. Before instructing me on how to "disable" the IE pop-up blocker, this happens whether the pop-up blocker is enabled or not. If I click on the pop-up information bar, one of the options is to "Turn ON pop-up blocker" if it is off, or "Turn OFF pop-up blocker" if it is on, either way it still blocks the menu from dropping down.

I have tried adding the sites to my allowed sites list. I have tried resetting IE settings. I have tried searching online for other people with the same problem, but all I get is an endless list of sites explaining how to disable the IE pop-up blocker.

Any suggestions??

On the Data menu, click Validation, and then click the Settings tab.

In the Allow box, click List.

In the Source box, enter a reference to your list of valid data.
If you want to select from a list of the entries when you click a restricted cell, make sure the In-cell dropdown check box is selected.

To specify that the entry is not valid if the restricted cells or the cells that contain your list of valid data are blank, clear the Ignore blank check box.

To display messages to prompt for entries and to explain or prevent incorrect entries, specify the types of messages you want on the Input Message and Error Alert tabs.

To omit display of messages, clear the Show input message when cell is selected check box on the Input Message tab, and clear the Show error alert after invalid data is entered check box on the Error Alert tab.

If the list of valid entries is short, you can type them in the Source box instead of typing the entries on a worksheet, separated by the Windows list separator character (commas by default). For example, you could type Low, Average, High in the Source box instead of entering the three words on a worksheet.

If the list of valid entries might change, name the list range, and then enter the na... Read more

Using Asus notebook. I can't click the drop down url box on websites. When I click the down arrow to see the drop menu it fickers down for a minute then off so I can't choose any options. Also when I put my cursor over things that usually display a label, it only flashes for a second and I can't read it before it disappears. Also have problem when trying to fix photos in windows photo gallery, the sliders for colour fix etc move themselves. In addition the volume keeps sliding back up to maximum if I click on it and I can't lower the the sound. Also my laptop has been making some strange bleeping sounds occasionally for no reason (but I am not sure if this connected). I tried to use system restore but the option to create a restore point is in grey so I can't set the date I want to use. Would appreciate any help with this.<br />

Okay, I'm not sure about the title but I am having problems with Firefox! OK, so I have 1.5 installed and updated to 1.5.7 the other day and then, suddenly, whenever I open up Gmail, it's always in the basic html mode and not the standard view.... And everytime I click on the Search drop-down menu of this forum, the quick search menu never opens and instead I'm redirected to the Advanced search page... Is there a problem with Java? Could anyone suggest anything? Because I've reinstalled FF a million times!

Thank you so much in advance!!

I have a Dell Inspirion E1505. 1.73ghz core duo, 2 gb Ram, 80gb hdd.
I had been running Linux on my laptop. It ran fine. I decided to sell the laptop and realized I'd have to re-install the Vista OS that came with the computer. After a successful install and the downloading of all updates, including SP1, I noticed a problem when I attempted to change my power options. When I clicked on the drop down menu, it showed me all the options, I chose what I wanted and when it retracted, it went through every option and then settled on the one at the top of the list. It did this numerous times. I then clicked on set to default and that worked. I had downloaded spybot search and destroy and attempted to install it. When it came to the select language portion, it was on Afrikaans (top of the list), I attempted to change it to english and it would quickly rotate through all the languages and stop on Afrikaans, again, numerous times. I googled the problem to no avail. I then figured that one of the updates had a corrupted file or something and restored the syatem to the very first point, again to no avail. I then decided to do a repair install, that didn't work. I then decided to do a complete re-install, when I get to the set the time and date, I choose Eastern Standard Time and it then rotates through all the choices in seconds and stops at the very top one. I am Lost and could sure use some help.
