E-mai permissions on Public Folder in Exchange 2003

Q: E-mai permissions on Public Folder in Exchange 2003

Is there a way to restrict users from fowarding or replying to e-mails that go to a public folder share? I can set permissions to restrict them from deleting the e-mails but not from replying or forwarding these e-mails. We are using Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2007. We are going to be receiving sensitive information to this folder and just need to assure that individuals with the proper permissions can save and print the attachments.

I appreciate your help

Permissions replication is the most common source of public folder problems in organizations that use both Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 Server. This technical article explains how you can avoid such problems by taking steps to ensure consistency between the directory data in both versions of Exchange, and by following recommended practices for setting permissions on public folders.

Hi I have a user that was migrated from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003.

Now when he tries to download the Global Address Book with cached mode checked and unchecked he gets Object Not Found.
Also, after the migration he is getting synchronization error with the offline address book and most important he cannot view one of the public folder, that all other users can see.

So far, we have deleted .oab files and ran outlook \resetfolders and recreated his outlook profile. None of this has helped. I have been able to create his Outlook profile on another laptop and we are able to view the missing public folder.

The strange thing is the missing public folder shows up in OWA.

Any ideas?

I've got an idea that I want to use, but I'm not sure if it's workable. Here's my situation:

The company that I work for has added a desktop faxing software. It can use Outlooks Contacts to get fax numbers to send to so long as the Business Fax field is filled in with the correct fax number. What I've done is setup a Public Folder with all of these contacts in it (note, the list updates weekly). There's not a problem having my desktop users see it because we just turn on the option in Outlook to show that folder as an address book. The problem we run into are those users that are using OWA web access for their box. I have not found a way to include that Public Folder in an Address Book that they can access from the web. All it offers is Global Address List and Contacts to search from.

Please let me know if any of you had any ideas.

Thanks,

Justin

I'm not sure if this possible. I want two of my users to receive an email notification when a certain public folder receives an email. Basically this is just a way for them to know that the folder has received a new email so they don't have to constantly check throughout the day. I checked rules in outlook and the particular public folder's properties in exchange system manager and could not find anything. All of the exchange books I have does not say if you can or can't.

I have a user trying to send an 11 MB file to a public folder on our Exchange 2003. She keeps getting an error message that says

The message reached the recipient's e-mail system, but delivery was refused. Attempt to resend the message. If it still fails, contact your system administrator.

She was able to send the file to my account with no issues. Our domain is setup to be able to receive messages up to 15 MB. What is the most that public folders can accept? Is there a way to change the setting for public folders to allow larger files?

How would I go about restoring the public folders that have been deleted? Do I need a a dedicated restore server for this?

Thanks,

Hi,

I was wondering if there was an easy way of assigning permissions on more than one public folder and its contents all at once?

Basically I have to add a single user to every single public folder I have access to. He will be given the same permission on every single folder and in every category contained therein.

Given this situation is there an easy way to do this quickly? I could add him manually to all of these folders but there are more than a hundred entries and I would prefer not to go that route if possible.

Thanks for all your help!

A:OUTLOOK 2003: Assigning permissions in public folders

Not from Outlook, this needs to be done through the Exchange Admin interface. you might want to consider setting up groups in Active Directory just for this purpose, then all you need to do is add/remove users from group membership.

Hello
We have restored a SBS 2003 server which now seems to be in general fine, however our backup solution (Veritas backup exec 9.1) will not back up the Exchange public folder store, quoting the error-

Backup - \\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group Access denied to database Public Folder Store (SERVER).
Database or database element is corrupt

We also get these warnings...
Backup - \\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group WARNING: "\\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (SERVER)" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
Verify - \\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group WARNING: "Public Folder Store (SERVER)" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
Ideally we just want to delete this and start again as the public folders are UNUSED by our customers. However when we try to delete the store it asks us to move it to another exchange server before it can be deleted. Is there another way round this???

Any help would be great!

My client uses Outlook 2000 to access public folders on an Exchange 5.5 server. The public folders contain 300-500 contacts. When he double clicks on a single contact to look at it, it takes as much as 15 seconds to actually open the entry. This seems rather too long.

Any suggestions for improving the response (other than faster computers and LAN)?

We have a office contacts folder that has been shared out from a local pc. A user on a different pc wants to make some category changes on this shared folder. They have This is Outlook 2010. They have Publishing Editor permissions on this folder. They go to categorize > all categories > then on the right it says new but that is greyed out. I switched their permissions to Owner and it did not change their ability to click new. Is it impossible for anyone except the creator of the folder to make the changes?

Hi folks,

not having a problem with Public folders themselves but just how they are viewed in outlook.
Seems like a very simple (yet annoying) issue that i cannot find how to resolve anywhere for the life of me.

OK so

A few users at the organisation i work for have got married recently and in doing so have a new surname. So far so good, changed the name on the accounts everywhere it needs changed within Exchange and AD.

All this goes fine, new email addresses with new name added in etc without any issue.

My problem actually is just within these users Outlook itself. When these users go to look at public folders it shows "Public Folders - [email protected]"

This is the only bit that still shows the users previous name (and/or previous email address)

Does anyone know how to change this on these users outlook so it shows their new married name? (short of removing the outlook profile and adding it back again, i am out of ideas.)

thanks in advance.

Hi Guyz,

having a bit of a really annoying problem with the public folders.
In my organisation we have a calender list for everyone in the whole organisation, so that when staff come into the office in the morning they open thier own calender from the public folder and input where they will be at certain times on that day as alot of my staff move around offices and are out at meetings alot etc.

The problem i am having as that some (NOT ALL) of my staff are comming in to office in the morning and when they click on thier own calender, outlook jumps about 6 calenders up and takes them into someone elses.
Ive sat and watch it happening. Just with a single click, definately clicking on thier own calender, but jumps into someone elses.
They then have to re-click thier own calender again in order to access it.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this and how i can stop it?

btw any extra info needed?

I have a client that is having trouble seeing a Public Folder (PF) through her Outllok 2003 client. We are running Exchange Server 2003 within the network. I open the ESM (Exchange Server Manager) and I am able to see the PF there but not on her desktop. I have set the permissions for her to "Owner" of the folder and still nothing. This is happening while she is inside the network, any insight would be great. Thanks in advance.

Is her public folder on her local drive
If not make sure it's shared for her to see

You can also recreate the public folder link (by typing it in again) sometimes the link can be corrupted without showing it)
Note: by re-typing the location you may lose her current public folder data

One of our users accidentally deleted an entire public folder (she meant to delete one contact but had the folder highlighted instead of the one contact). When we try to recover that folder by using the "Restore Deleted Items" in Outlook, we receive an error that she does not have permission to do so. Only 4 users had permission for that folder, and we receive that error on all 4 user's computers when we attempt to recover it. I've tried to recover it from my computer (I have administrative rights on our network), but that folder doesn't even appear in the list of available folders to recover. The person that deleted it was owner of that contact folder, so I don't know why she wouldn't have permission to recover it. Anyone have any ideas?

In Exchange 2000, as in Exchange 5.5, a public folder is a storage container for messages or information shared among all users in your organization. Public folders can still contain different types of information, and they are still part of the information store that Exchange clients and Web browsers can access. Now, Microsoft Office 2000 and custom applications can also access Exchange public folder stores. You can open and save documents directly in the public folder stores.

Hello,

I am having a strange problem on a computer where the user is unable to view encrypted (via MS Exchange/Cert Authority) emails in her SENT folder. She can open encrypted emails in her INBOX normally.

I have checked her encryption certificate in Active Directory, Outlook, and IE. I have removed her key via IE and reinstalled it. I have reinstalled Office 2003.

When she attempts to open an encrypted message from her SENT folder, it asks for her password, BUT the password is not accepted. It's the same password she uses to open an encrypted message in the INBOX.

Outlook is up to date with patches and the back end is Exchange 2003. Outlook is not running in cached mode.

As a test, I had her send herself an encrypted email. She could open THAT email from her SENT folder, but only that email.

Is there a setting to clear her encryption key completely? I don't know where else to look as I've never had this issue come up before.

Thank you,
Eric

Neither appear to be an option to assign to a public folder only distribution groups. Any advice on setting up security groups on public folders or do I have to assign rights to individual users? With the public folders listed at the botton of the Outlook 2000 folder list, we have a folder for all our company 401k announcements. Everyone is able to access the shortcuts our HR president emails to us, except one person. It states that he does not have permission to view it. I checked the Active User Directory on our Exchange server, and his permissions are set the same as the average user who can view the folder. I also went into the properites for the folder, and I cannot find anywhere where you can change settings except under the Summary tab - there is no specific security settings like a normal folder. There are other posts from earlier in the year in there that he can view, which makes it even more odd. Can anyone give me some direction to go in, because I am lost.

We migrate 2 weeks ago to win 2003 and exchange 2003.

we make an image of the old win 2000 server + exchange 2000.

with that migration we forgot to backup our Public Folder from exchange (the public folder include
few importanc Contacts (200 .vcf) files).

I can browse the image from the old exchange.

I find out that the public folders are stored in this both files:

pub1.stm

Now the question: How I can recovery the complete Public folder???

I have an Exchange 2003 server to which I need to provide some highly mobile users real-time access (or nearly, within 5 minutes) to the public folder calendars.

OMA appears to have no functionality for accessing the public folders via its interface (I've checked from within IE).

But.. are there any devices out there which can survive standard OWA? Or perhaps just the public folder interface?

Or does anyone know of a mobile device that can be auto-synched (or active synched) to a public folder calendar?

Any suggestions? I've tried googling, but any terms that would match this provides useless garbage and hosting services advertising their capabilities..

(Note: Mobile device does NOT mean a phone necissarily.. RIM blackberrys, palms, et al. are preferred over phone units.)

Thanks in advance.

I'm using OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) for Exchange Server 2003 with Nokia 3650 Smart Phones (Symbian OS) and I have scoured the web for a solution that allows access to PUBLIC FOLDERS through OMA instead of OWA (I think Outlook Web Access would be too slow for unsupported celluar phones (cell phones with out EAS (Exchange Active Sync) compatability.

I find it very difficult to believe that Microsoft would invest all this development into OMA and it can't even access PUBLIC FOLDERS!! That make's OMA pretty useless since my original idea was to have road warriors out in the field accessing the companies public folder data such as contacts, schedules and tasks realtime.

What a bummer! Have you found a work around??? No where have I read that it can NOT be done. Can you confirm this??? Please let me know. I would be greatful!!!...

I recently put a new hard drive in my HP dv7 laptop to increase the onboard storage. Before changing out the existing hard drive, I backed up all my personal files on an external hard drive.

One of the folders though for some reason appears to have "randomly" restricted the permissions of an entire folder along with its subfolders and individual files to the admin user of the previous Win7 installation.

This is a folder with multiple subfolders and files (photo backup folder). Windows will allow me to take control of the folder with the current admin user, but it's only one folder at a time. When I attempt to force new permissions for access down the folder structure, I get an error message telling me my access to the subfolders and files is denied.

Is there some other way to force these permissions down the tree or should I put the old hard drive back in and attempt to fix the problem from the old instance of Windows?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Normally I am the only user and administrator and guest acct is turned off.  However, now there was user "fbwuser" account and other accts. which seem to have disappeared. Still there are random folders throughout (i.e. Public Videos) and others to which I get denied access. At times I get the feeling it is being accessed remotely, but all this is very new to me,

We just finished most of a migration to Exchange 2003 Standard from 5.5 Enterprise. Everything has been moved over to the 2k3 server and the 5.5 server while still connected to the site, is not in use for anything.

When in Exchange System Mngr, if I drill down to Admin Groups\Folders\Public Folders, I get prompted to enter a username and password
even when logged in with the highest level domain admin account. After entering this, I get an error message that says:
Could not locate the root folder. Ensure that your default virtual server is running and its is configured correctly.

Exchange System Manager
After clicking ok, if I right click and select system folders, the same thing happens.

All email operations seem to functioning normally, mail is flowing and all clients seem to be able to access mailboxes and public folders with no problem. I encountered this issue when beginning the process of decommissioning our Exchange 5.5 server.

Nothing is appearing in the event logs.

Has any one ever dealt with this issue or know where to start looking? Any help would be much appreciated.

I have two network cards in my PC. One of them connects to the internet while the other connects to my home network.

The issue is enabling public folders for the home network in "Network and Sharing Center" enables public folders for the public network also. In other words Windows grants permission to people on the internet to access my c:\users\Public folder.

Disabling public folders under public network settings disables public folders for the home network also, preventing people on my local area network from accessing my PC.

A:Cannot turn off "Public Folder Sharing" for public network

I think it's because you set up a Public Network as your first interface. Because of this it may not be possible to turn off the Public file sharing option.

You don't need to use both interfaces to share the wireless connection with your wife. You can do that with a single interface by just setting up a Home Network on one of the interfaces then sharing out from that interface using software to make it easier like Connectify.

Dear All,

Im new to this so be basic with me!

I currently have a problem at work, where a user sends an email it gets stuck in the outbox folder until you click on another folder within outlook - I have the same problem with receving emails, you dont know you have a new email until you click on another folder, then suddenly you recieve a new email.

This is happening with four of our Windows XP machines, we have 6 Windows XP machines in the office approx, and 60 Windows 2000 machines, running from Microsoft Exchange Server 2003... We use the SMTP type for our emails..

I have been looking on the internet for months but not found anything, I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction

Hello,

I have a few computers running Winxp sp2 @ my company. I got most of the PC connected to the Exchange server 2003 via VPN (Exchange offsite).

I have one stubborn machine that is having trouble finding the exchange\host name. During the setup it will prompt me servername: "server" (checked cache mode). The second is the firstname.lastname, and when I click find, it could not locate the server or/global list.

Why can't it find the server or global address list? I was able to connect via VPN.

Thanks in advance.

Well since this is a web/email server I put it here if you think it should go elsewhere let it be moved.

Last night our server IIS service started jumping up and down on our server in all of the hubbub that ensued this service shutting down started turning off other Exchange services on the server as well.

We got it all back up and running by making note of all the services (some which would not restart due to a bunch of errors about executible not being linked to a working service), stopping all the exchange and IIS services, backing up the information store, ripping out IIS in the Add/Remove programs windows components, reboot, reinstall IIS ad components, Reinstall Exchange over the top, Reapplying the service pack and lastly resetting the information store. All was good as far as email use ending and recieving internally and externally works like a champ.

The problem is while OWA was working for us before this tragedy It no longer is working at all. I can go to http:/server and get to the default website so I know parts of IIS is working but when I add in the /Exchange I get a unspecified Error in the top right of the page and when I check the log of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 I get a 401 error thats not displaying on my broswer. The one big thing I noticed is that there is no Exchange application pool in the Virtual directory under application pool in the properties of the Exchange site. I only get DefaultAppPool I do not see the ExchangeAppPool.

I installed Exchange Server 2003 for one of my clients and they're really happy with it. the only problem I'm having is sharing calendars between some people. the CEO's assistant wishes to create a company-wide calendar on her Outlook and share it with the rest of the company, without having to share her personal "default" calendar.

I created a new calendar folder under her mailbox and named it "Company Calendar". I right-clicked on it and shared it, giving everyone Editor or Reviewer rights depending on the person. the problem comes when I go to open a shared calendar in someone else's Outlook. if I look up the assistant's name, it will give a message saying it can't find the "Calendar" folder..but that folder isn't shared because that's her personal calendar.

can anyone help me share a different calendar other than her default "Calendar"?
Thank you

HELP!!!!

Our server crashed during the Backup Last night around 07:00 (in the morning). It was totally stuck when I came into the office this morning...

Now I have been busy all day finding out why the server was not starting properly. Every time the server got to the "Applying Computer Settings" Menu the server got stuck after 15-20 minutes.
I could start the server in Safe Mode. After several boots I found out that the exchange information store service is causing the server to get stuck, as soon as I start this service the server (SBS2003) hangs...

I am not really an exchange expert. How can I fix the problem....

right now I am going to use "eseutil /g" to check the databases, any other maintenance I can use??

Thanks in advance,
Wouter

A:Solved: SBS 2003 + Exchange 2003 Information Store Problem

Problem has been solved

Step 1:
I restored the mailbox and public store from the backup including the logfiles

Step 2:
Made a backup of the Exchange Logfiles and deleted the logfiles in the original location

Step 3:
opened a commandpromt and browsed to C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin
Ran: "ESEUTIL /mh on the public and private EDB (seperately)

Stap 4:
Ran "ESEUTIL /cc "LocationtoLogfiles (e.g. C:\ExchangeLog_Temp)"

The process completed succesfully and the public and private store are mounted and online again!!!!

I have MS Office Enterprise 2007 (Word/Outlook), and I want to do a Mail Merge including the contacts inside a customized form(s) called "Company Contacts" hosted on Exchange Server 2003. I can do a Mail Merge from my local contacts, as well as the contacts from another mailbox I have access to. However, the Mail Merge fails to pick up the Contacts/customized forms in the Public Folders. I copied the "Company Contacts" file to my mailbox, and tried removing the Sharing Permissions so I am left as owner. I tried doing the Mail Merge after that, but it didn't get picked up by Word 07. I tried exporting the "Company Contacts" file as a .pst file, and attaching it to my Outlook 07 client, and then tried to do the Mail Merge again, but this also failed. Any ideas how I can accomplish this? Thank you

When I sent an email to myself or anyone in the GAL for that matter, the email remains in the outbox for 30 secs plus. If I click another folder the email sends immediately. If do not click on a folder it can take up to the before mentioned 30 secs plus.

I have checked DNS/WINS, and all are correct.

Any ideas?

Hi!
What I will do:

I will connect 2 different domains together.
The big problem is that that the both domains are in 2 different cities (Berlin and Munich).

The both domains should set up under Windows 2003.
Also should set up an Exchange 2003 server (with Outlook web access).

Members from both domains should have complete access to data on the other domain.
The members should login on the other domain with his local account.

Email exchange should be setup under Exchange 2003 sever (at best without POP3/SMTP).

The biggest problem is that I have no idea how to make it!!

Can someone give me some tips or info how to connect that both domains together?!?

thx!

This issue has been driving me crazy for weeks now.

OS is XP Pro, SP2.

I work for a large ISP here in Atlanta. We get e-mails from vendors, peers, customers, internal departments, etc., all the time. I have to keep them in separate personal folders so I can easily sort them, and because we have very limited mailbox space on the Exchange server.

I easily get 1000 e-mails a day.

I currently have 28 rules setup. The first 3 are server side rules, deleting a lot of crap that I just don't need. Those 3 server side rules run just fine automatically.

The other 25 rules are client side (because they are the ones moving e-mails to personal folders).

The first two work fine automatically. They are:
Code:

Apply this rule after the message arrives; with XXX in the subject; move it to the XXX folder; and stop processing more rules.

...and...
Code:

Apply this rule after the message arrives; with XXX in the recipient's address; move it to the XXX folder; and stop processing more rules.

("XXX" being work related terms / addresses)...however, *none* of the rest of the rules will run automatically. If I run them manually, they work just fine. The next rule after the two above is:
Code:

Apply this rule after the message arrives; with 'Read:' or 'read:' in the subject; move it to the [B][U]Read Receipts[/U][/B] folder; and stop processing more rules.

...and so on and so forth. Every rule has the "and stop processing more rules." on the end.

Ok, here is the situation.
I have one user that has to log onto a computer under a "generic" log-on, as this computer is used by several employees. He has an email address for his own profile, and I was able to setup Outlook to bring in his email. The problem is that he cannot send email in response to those he recieves when logged on the generic profile. (error: you do not have permission to send for this user)

On the Exchange server, I have given the generic logon full permissions on his email box, but it still does not allow the sending of email.

At this point, the only way he can send email, is if he uses the http remote email. The issue with this is that in order for the others to use the same email address, he has to give them his password...

I am not certain what I am overlooking. I have made this same post on Microsoft Technet, but no one seems to know what to do there. (I am MCP) but have never even heard of this issue. Normally changing permissions on the Exchange server corrects the problem...

Thanks for your help

Good day folks,

I have a question which I've searched about for based on Exchange 2007 and Distribution lists but can't seem to find a solid working answer, so here goes!

System:
Microsoft Exchange 2007
Microsoft Windows 2003 Server

Scenario:
A distribution list (Let's call it 'Example List') has been freshly created.

We have two department managers ('Manager A' and 'Manager B') who have requested the ability to share administration of the members of this list.

On a minor note, it will also be used for permissions on various systems so when created through Exchange 2007 Management Console was set up as a Security group.

As a email enabled security group, this works fine - Members receive mail.
"Manager A" can add/remove members of the list using Outlook 2007 whilst set as the distribution list manager (Managed By) in the Group Information tab of the list properties on Exchange Management Console and the "Manager can upate membership list" is checked under the Managed By tab of the list's properties in Active Directory.

However, this of course allows only one Managed By member.
I've tried using a security group to get around this but then both Managers can't amend the list.

I've checked Manager A's permissions on the list using Active Directory (Advanced Permissions) and can see that Manager A has a permission of "Write Members" to this object only.
If I manually add &qu... Read more

If not, then see if you may be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before you deleted these folders to hopefully fix this.

Hi, I have a problem with a 2003 small business server running exchange 2003 with a POP3 connector in as much that I am receiving some spam e-mail with a variable from address & to address. The from address is %from_name% and the to address is %to%.

The routing rules normally deliver any undelivered e-mails to the administrator but in the case of these e-mails I get and error 1053 & 1056 in the event log stating that an error ocurred trying to deliver these e-mails. This is then followed be a series of exchange errors 8026, 2102, 2104 followed by a series of DNS errors and system errors in the event logs. The only fix I have at the moment is to restart the server which seems to clear everything for a couple of hours until once again I get one of these spam e-mails.

Has anyone come across this before and found an answer please.

Many thanks in advance.

A:Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003

Yes it can - sort of. There is a "co-exist with Exchange 5.5" install method for Exchange 2003. Trouble is, the Exchange 2003 server needs to be in a native-mode Windows 2003 domain, so you will have to put it in a different domain or upgrade the NT server first.

I remember with Vista, this folder had multiple entries and they were not mine(probably came with new laptop, like bloat ware?). I was clueless then (with Vista)what that folder was about...and I'm still in the dark(with W7) .

I just discovered today, with W7, this folder is completely empty. (Why?).

I don't remember if I shared it(with Vista), but now I realize I have options...to share or not. I feel silly sharing an empty folder. So I opted to turn sharing OFF . Is being selfish(not sharing) disadvantageous to my system?

A:What's The Public Folder?...and what to do with it?

Hello Pappi,

The "Public" folders, are basically folders that the public (all users) have full access to by default. They basically set to be shared by "Everyone" making it easier to share files between users on the local PC and network easy to do by simply putting a file in one of the Public folders.

Empty Public folders do not take up any space. They are not a security risk since they only have access to what you place in the Public folders.

It's just a personal choice if you want to have Public folder sharing turned on or off.

Here's some more details below on all this if you like.

Hope this helps,

#2. Now I can't put anything into the Library/Documents Folder and don't understand why.
#3. If I can't retrieve that Public Folder can I somehow re-create another sub folder.

To my knowledge because calendars are created via a mailbox in an exchange enviornment a seperate mailbox would need to be created and shared to all people needing the group calendar.

Or if a person would like to share their own they can choose the people they would want to have access to their calenders.

Is there another way to only create a calendar public?

I just set up my Public folders to share files across my home network and the Public folder already has lots of files in it that I didn't put there.

For example, Public Desktop has shortcuts to Adobe Reader etc. Another folder called Games has the full installations of some of my games. I don't want these shared!

When I deleted some of them, they were also deleted from my real desktop. Not good.
When I clicked on Share and tried to Unshare one of these folders, it wouldn't let me.

Three questions:
1) How did they get there in the first place?
2) How can I keep this from happening in the future?
3) Since deleting some of them also deleted them from my computer, how can I remove these files from the Public sharing area without messing up the installation on my computer?

There are separate Advanced file sharing settings which refer specifically to the Public folders so that needs to be enabled.

Besides that you should make sure that you have enabled sharing for the Public folders by going to C:>Users>Public folder, and enable sharing through the Sharing tab. You should also make sure that the C:>Users folder is shared out through the Sharing tab as well.

Hi,

I'm on a home network. Its all been configured. My firewall has been configured. Just wondering how to put files in the public folder. I understand you can just copy files in there but i dont want to because it'll take up space. Is there a way to make individual files or folders share themselves into the public folders without duplicating themselves from the original to save space? Because i dont want two from the same file, ie one in the public folder and the other in the original folder.

Also, i use vista and my other network computers are on xp. I noticed on one of them, i can give it files and but i cannot take files from it onto my computer. I understand it must be a sharing setting on that computer but im not sure where to go to fix it since its xp and im a vista person now. I assume you already have your computers in the same Homegroup. If so, you should be able to right click the folder you want to share, go to "Share with" in the context menu, and should be able to select either Read or Read/Write.

I used to have messed up file sharing settings because the printer wouldnt work but they were alright because whoever looked into my Computer in the network would only find a Public folder. (w/o passwords)

Now, i reinstalled windows, and whenever somenoe looks into my computer under the network, they have to enter a password and once they do, they can access not only the public folder, but all my documents under my folder. (Users/MyStuff)

the sharing folder is Users so people can see everything inside Users if they have my password.

What i want to do is let them only access the Public folder WITHOUT my password.

That way, if i have something that needs to be transferred, i'll just drop it on in the public folder, and someone can take it.

I am confused in terms of how to reach these settings and i would appreciate it if anyone could offer a solution.
THank you.

And if you have a problem in the future do NOT run the WD software again. Just use Win Explorer to MAP Network Drives.

I do not use the public folder in w8 and want to delete it. Can someone give me an idea on how to do it thru registry or system? thanks

A:Windows 8 public folder

Just leave it there. If you haven't enabled file & folder sharing, there's no problems.

My PC is connected to a home wireless network and there are two more computers in the same network (a mac and a pc). I want to share the public folder so I can exchange files between computers by writing them to the public folder. But still I want to make sure that only the public folder is shared and nothing else of my computer can be accessible by another computer in the wireless network. Need your help.

Thanks.

A:How to share the public folder?

This link should give you the brief overview of the process.
Sharing files with the Public folder
The public folder is 'public' by default however access can also be restricted as required. The link above explains that too. And if you haven't changed any other settings, the other folders should be safe and unshared.

Hope that helps !

A:hidden folder - public?

I would say if its not causing issues, then I would just leave. I think that folder is for public sharing of documents.

I see Public Documents under it and I want to get rid of it. ALso there is a heading over My Documents that wasn't there before. Can anyone help?
*I put an attatchment of the problem.

A:Public Folder Showing

Right click on the Library - e.g. Documents (in the left pane) > go to Properties. There you can delete it (highlight it and then "Remove" - do not forget Apply !!!).

Hello,
I've recently been having some trouble with installing and running a few programs. (skype and rosetta stone are two that it happens). When I open them my entire computer just freezes. I have a feeling that it might have something to do with my Public Folders. A little while back I was trying to fix them because they appeared as just standard yellow folders, instead of the folders with the image on it. However, I could not get all of them to change to the imaged folder. My public desktop stayed as a normal yellow folder.

I did this fixing by following a website:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/172301-public-folder-icons-restore-default-icon.html

The website basically had me do shell commands, and replace the desktop.ini file for each folder...It just so happens that this website was designed for windows vista, not windows 7, so I think that I messed something up. Cause ever since then my programs have not been running correctly.

-Carrie

Hi People,

Has anyone noticed that the folder icon for "Public Documents" is small, and can't be resized to extra large, or large like the other Public folder icons? I've noticed this on my two vista machines, and was wondering if anyone else noticed this? Or if I just stuffed something.

Cheers!

This is dead simple really even though most people say it can't be deleted.
Start you computer in safe mode and log on as administrator if prompted.
Go to my computer>local disk>users
Right click public and delete.
In the left pane left click on documents library.
Where it says 2 locations left click and delete the public folder and close.
Follow the last 2 steps for each folder in libraries.
Job done.
Restart your computer.

I am currently investigating sharing of folders and came across the instance of a folder named Microsoft>IndentityCTRL.

Is this alright to have running in the background as a folder and what are the properties of it?

Hey,

Me and my brother have recently both reinstalled windows vista home basic on our fairly new laptop computers, I went to access my brothers public folder by going to Network then \\ GAMES1-PC\Public (Already setting up no user account control, password sharing and public folder sharing enabled.) It wouldnt connect and asked if i wanted to diagnose the problem, I then tryed to access my OWN public folder by going to the public folder on the side and it accessed fine but when I tryed going through Network \\ GAMES2-PC\Public It wouldnt connect and asked if i wanted to diagnose.

My brothers computer has been doing the same thing and we really dont want to reinstall.

Thanks in advance

Anyone ever experince this? I am running a win2k server with exchange 2000 server and all of a sudden we can not open items within the public folder we have set up. The error comes up "can not open this item". This only applies to messages or addresses that have notes in the body field. If it is just a reminder with a subject and no body, it opens fine but as soon as you add a body it will not open. I read on an MS site that this is due to the version of GFI Content Security Monitor that I have. It said if you have ver 8 to upgrade to 8.1. I did so, still haven't solved the problem... Any suggestions?

Never mind. Got it.

I wanted to move the Public Folder from C:\Users to D:\, so I simply copied the folder, delete the original, and created a symbolic link (with -mklink-). A little knowledge was a dangerous thing - apparently I should have used -robocopy- to ensure the copy of Public had the correct characteristics. So, is there a way to fix D:\Public so that it has the correct permissions of a "Public" folder? If not, is there a way to recreate the original C:\Users\Public? I am not concerned about any data in this folder, as there was (so far) none there.

Apologies if this has been addressed here before, I tried searching the forums but with no luck. Thanks.

A:how to recreate Public Folder?

Hello Spandrel, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You should be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before you made these changes to the Public folder to undo them.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi is it possible to only allow exchange to send mail to a particular external domain.
I'm in the (gradual) process of decomissioning our exchange sever. All my users now have a new e-mail address hosted on another exchange box.
What I've set up is that all mail that is recieved by a user on the old box is forwarded to there new address.
When a user sends a mail via outlook its via the new domain.
So technically the only valid mail leaving the old exchange should be going to the new domain.

Hi

Im having a little problem in receiving external email. I can send OK, but I get errors like unroutable domain when I try and send from an external source. I preseume this is do do with my MX record.

I went to http://www.zoneedit.com/smtp.html and if I put my external IP address then the mail gets to its destination, however when i put my domain name it cant find it.

The screen shot shows the dns settings I can change with regards to my domain name. Can someone give me some guidance as how to best fill this out

Thanks

A:Exchange 2003

And does your MX record resolve to the IP address of your Exchange Server? If not your MX record isn't configured properly.

When I do a host lookup I get

host name : mx1.123-reg.co.uk
address : 195.224.48.126
address : 195.224.48.117
address : 195.224.48.118
address : 195.224.48.119
address : 195.224.48.120
address : 195.224.48.121
address : 195.224.48.123
address : 195.224.48.124
address : 195.224.48.125

MX Records should only resolve to one IP address.

I have several users complaining about not receiving emails with attachments. Things seem to be working fine with small files, but anything over 2MB it seems is not coming through. Where in Exchange could this setting be? I am using Exchange 2003.

A:Exchange 2003

There are a few places whereby you can restrict the e-mail size limit.
Check in System Manager - Global Settings - Message Delivery (Right-click - Properties) - Default tab

Also in System Manager, find your mailbox store (Servers - servername - First Storage Group), Properties - Limits.

If it is only affecting one person, you should check within their AD object under Exchange General tab - Delivery Restrictions.

Any way to have one exchange 2003 server which works fine for domain abc.net forward any incoming mail for xyz.net to another exchange 2003 server on the same network? Relay or something?

A:Exchange 2003

Why forward the messages? Why not have them mailed directly to the server in question? Sounds like a lot of overhead for one exchange server to be handling both domains.

When you delete a user from AD and delete their mailbox, how long does it usually take before that user nolonger shows up in the global address book? Does the server have to be reset?

A:Ms Exchange 2003

The clean up is scheduled for a certain time, so in 24 hours max it should clear itself. I forget the exact time its scheduled by default.
