Q: Solved: Windows Vista-problem with Microsoft word 2003 won't save a file get error me

Windows Vista Home

Installed Microsoft office 2003 Installed custom install of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Publisher. They all work you can type in them and print the page ect. However all of them if you go to save the file such as a word doc to the desktop like always did type whatever and then go to file and save as have the file named etc and with all of them it comes up with an error sayin

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. YOu can save a file from any of them, like I said you can open them and do whatever you want and print them out but cannot save them. Can someone tell me why I am gettting the error and why it wion't save?

I'm having a strange problem with Microsoft Word 2003 SP3.

It only happens on new docs. I'm a writer and when I open ongoing projects in Word everything is fine, but when I open a new doc. my Page Setup doesn't work. If I set it to have 1" of space top, bottom and sides, it doesn't work on the top. My first line starts at the very top of the page.

Also, the ruler up the left side should be dark where that top inch of space should be, but it isn't because it's not working. I discovered a temporary fix in Page Setup by setting the top space to be 2" and the sides and bottom to be 1". However, even doing this I don't get the dark inch or so at the top of my left margin ruler.

I did a repair in ADD Remove Programs but it didn't change anything. It might be a corruption in Word because I have the same Office 2003, SP3 on my laptop and I've compared all the settings on both computers and they appear to be identical.

Has anyone here run into this problem, and do you think uninstalling and reinstalling Office might solve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

Hello

I have windows vista and ms word 2003. After attempting to save a document to a memory stick, directly through the save function in ms word, the screen froze. After pressing ctrl alt delete ms word flashed as running, not responding and then running again. Returning to it it had a problem and had to be closed and my file had gone from the memory stick. After restarting windows, the file itself opened in notepad and was complete nonsense. I understand this is because of associations between vista and word 2003, which is why it opened in notepad. I have tried decoding the nonsense, using the language function this does not work. Is this a problem with the memory stick, my computer or both? More importantly, is there any possible way I can retrieve this file. I havent ever set the system up for autosave or anything and only learned of its existence when I searched for solutions online. Please Please Please. Any help would be wonderful

When I ctl-c a hyperlinked header and try to ctl-v paste it.

Sometimes I get a "not enough disk space"

Microsoft says there is not enough disk space - as if a few gig is not enough space for a 4.5 mb word file.

Other hints.

The structure of the document is tracking status of hundreds of items, and hyperlinking among them.

I use Heading 2 for item title and headder 3 for status, so I can easily see problem and status in TOC.

Different folks have different tracking numbers for ths same item, and the same task will go through different phases. I have different sections in the document to handle this, and hyperlink, using heading 2 normally. I cut it and paste it in the new section, remove the heading feature and use it as a hyperlink back to the oringinal. Using ...hyperlinks.count, I count over 5000 of them, along with over 4000 ...fields.count.

Does not seem to be the problem.

Hello,

I am unable to use my mouse in Microsoft Word and Outlook 2003. I cannot click, highlight, or use the left mouse control. I am able to save and use the tool bar.

I cannot open any documents by double clicking on them, I have to open Microsoft word then click on the file/open.

Sometimes when opening word I get the Auto-recover/save page Asking if I would like to save the "PDFMCustom.asd" (never used)

Steps I have already taken to fix the error:
- I reset user options and registry settings in Word - deleted the data registry key

- Removed and reinstalled Microsoft 2003.

If I go to the task manager and end the process WINWORD.EXE, I can then delete the temporary files the "AutoRecovery save of PDFMCustom.asd" from Application Data\Microsoft\Word. Then I run http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822005 which allows me to use Word and Outlook correctly for a short time.

PLEASE HELP!!

Hi,

A friend of mine has MS Word 2003 and though it always used to work, a couple of days ago, it simply began to refuse to save anything. She is typing something for school, and when she tried to save the document, the "save" dialog box disappears for a second, then pops back up.......nothing else can work, of course, so long as that box is there........she tries repeatedly to save it, but it will disappear and reappear immediately each time. The only way she can do anything is to remove the name in the "name" area and then just click on the "x" at the top right of the dialog box. At that point, everything she's typed disappears and the MS Word page is blank again.

I've never heard of such a thing, but I'm not real familiar with the Office products. Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?

Hi Jonloo.
Depending on the version, you should have some save options.
In Word 03 it's at Tools>Options>Save Tab.
Deselect "allways create backup copy" and "allow background saves" to eliminate it completely.

Hi, I've been having this problem with MS Word 2003 for a little bit.

What happens is, I open the application, and the Word box pops up like it's about to open like it should, but then it takes forever to open, maybe over 10 minutes or so, unless I just end the process like I usually do since it takes so long.

The only thing I've noticed different about anything when I open it is, Navw32.exe starts running, and if i end that, an alert window opens that says "The document C:\Documents and Settings\David Solis\Application Data\Microsoft\Normal\Templates.dot is still infected. Do you want to delete this file?". I'll click no, and Word opens.

Any idea what any of this is, why it's doing it, and how to stop it? Thanks!

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello there.

Microsoft office 2003 problem.
When starting microsoft word on vista ulitmate, there seems to be a problem

This will automatically shut down, saying there was a problem and is shutting down...
The other programs seem fine, Excel, powerpoint, etc.

I havent a clue what this could be, has anyone else had this problem.
In the top right corner of microsoft word it will say "Finalizing Installation" and then after you type a couple of sentences it will shut down on its own..

This is for a friend of mine, who had microsoft office put on when she bought the laptop of a friend, though she does not have the disk, so i wondered if this is an installation problem.

Would this be some sort of copy of microsoft office 2003, that was put on for her
She has only found this out now as her son needs to use word for school

A:Microsoft office 2003/ Problem with Word

I assume that you're opening up Word from the Start menu here...

Open up the Start Menu and go to Word. Right-click on it. Open up its Compatability tab which is the third tab.

2003 is an XP product. Therefore, Word (and Excel and Access if they're 2003 versions) should be run in compatibility mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)."

If this is not so, check the box and select Windows XP from the list to make it so amd OK the box to close it.

See if it runs now.

But all it is. Is that you have size 10 and then size 22 after it

I can't explain it clearly it's 10 10 10 10 10 22 22 22
And when you backspace the 22 size it stays 22 until you make it size10 again
As for that little dot, it must be the font at that size, or something

A:Microsoft Office Word 2003 problem

I have seen several suggestions for dealing with this problem, some work for some people, others don't and
some of them are potentially destructive, in my opinion, therefore I do not propose to supply any links.

However, I will tell you that I had the same problem recently. I run Office 2003 Professional Edition and
downloaded the Office 2007 trial. It was not for me and I uninstalled it. My problems then started,
with these 'Please wait while Windows configures' messages.

I tried all the usual 'repair' methods, but the only thing which fixed the problem was a complete
uninstall and reinstall of Office 2003. That would be my only suggestion and in addition,
I left the setup files on my hard disk, when asked, because there are some features that are not
immediately installed by the program, even on a full install and it saves digging out the CD/DVD
whenever you come across these features. (Don't remember too clearly which ones, I think it
may have been in connection with Publisher).

I appreciate this may be stating the obvious. If you can find an easier method, which you trust,
good luck.

btw, I am assuming that your computer is virus, adware, malware and spyware free.
You should run something like Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpware if you haven't
checked recently; presumably you have a realtime antivirus scanner.

Hello,
I am running Microsoft Word 2000, Windows XP SP2.

The problem I am having is trying to save edited MS Word documents on a usb flash drive. After I have done some editing with my word document and try to save it to the usb flash drive, the error messages "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error" prompted into his screen. I then discovered that the file was deleted from the flash drive whenever he try to save the file directly to flash drive.

I can duplicate the scenario and get the same problem over and over again.

So fare this only seems to happen with MS Word documents being saved on the USB drive. If I save a word doc on the C drive, open it, and edit it, it allows me to save the file with the updates to the C drive as normal.

Any suggestions? I'm not sure what a "file permission error is". I am using Norton Internet Security 2007, and I have tried disabiling it, thinking that it was a secuirty problem related to Norton, but that did not work either.

Please advise if you can help me.

Thank you

A:Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error

Hi

Depending on you flash drive, it could be write protected. There may be a small slider switch to move. Do you have a secure flash drive? These flash drives offer secure sections on the flash drive and you may need to use the software that came with the drive to unlock it.

It could also be faulty!

Hope this helps

Now, when i make any changes this document just closes, this has been tried and same phenomenon occurs on 3 other computers, so it must be something with the file? Any idea would be appreciated.

Some interesting characteristics:
when change is made word shuts down.
but when you use auto recover and word opens back up, the change that caused word to close is actually made.

Just recently something has changed with my Microsoft Office Word 2003 app.

I'm a writer and I have always been able to drag my pages that I have written today to a folder in My Documents and the same file would stay on my desktop for immediate access later. I realize other may not work this way but it is how I prefer to work as it has become my habit

When I try to drag and drop it now, it drops into the My Documents folder but it no longer remains on the desktop.

Now, in conjunction with this problem, I have another new problem, which is that when I write a page of text in Word and save it to a My Documents folder it doesn't go there. Also when I save a picture to My Pictures as I've always done it won't be there when I look for it. Something is preventing me from saving things and I haven't a clue what it is. I have to open the My Documents folder and drag the Word text page into it. It's the only way I can save stuff for some reason.

Can someone please tell me how I can fix this problem?

Thank you in advance.

Recently, I have been experiencing this issue where if I click on "save as" to save the file and then double click the C drive it just sits there and freezes for a couple minutes (and I get the "not responding" box with everything whited out). I tried to uninstall and reinstall microsoft office 2003 and the problem is still there. I don't know why it's doing that when I click on the C drive because I can save the file to the desktop or under documents right away without any freezing and then move the file -- but this is a hassle. How can I fix this problem?

Please help!

I am running Vista and Word 2007. I would like to save the document as a Word 2003 document so it can be opened in older versions of Word. I use "save as" and select Save as Word 97-2003, but when I try to open this document on an older machine "Windows XP and Word 2003" it opens with a lots of symbols and then the text is jumbled into one continuous paragraph.

I know there is a complatibility pack that can be downloaded for Word 2003 that will allow users to open Word 2007 documents, but I would still like to be able to "save as" Word 97-2003 so people without this compatability pack can still open this document.

Any help?

Thanks,
Danny

Hi, my problem is that when I was using Microsoft Word 2003, I reduced the font of one of the files I was working on and the entire file just transformed so that:
after every line, this symbol appears: ∂
before some lines, this symbol appears: ļ
and between words, this symbol appearsē

This actually happened before, but i, ah, don't remember how i got rid of it. I know it's kind of a small problem, but it's really driving me crazy.

Thanks.

I keep getting error messages when trying to open files created in Word 2003. The files burn to cd without a problem but when I try to open them off of the cd I get the file may be corrupt try to use recover text option or open and repair option. The odd thing is these word 2003 files open in Office xp without any issues. I have also got an error stating I do not have adminstrative rights on my cd drive. The cd drive is not a network shared drive so I am confused by this error. I have replaced the old cd-r/rw drive with a dvd r/rw and still get the same problems. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have had a very annoying problem with Word 2002 on a Dell Win Xp computer. I have 2 megs of ram and the procesor is 2.66 GHz. When I wish to save a document it takes about 15 seconds to go from one directory to another when I want to save the file or to go to a non default directory or a flash drive. It also takes this amount of time to retrieve a file. I have started using OpenOffice Writer since I can save and retrieve files immediately. For the final copy of the document I then go back to Word. This has been quite annoying for months. Has anybody had this experience? Even after installing a new harddrive sometime ago this problem surfaced. Thank you in advance.

I have created in Microsoft Word 2003 on an XP OS some lengthy documents. I created them using a view setting of 150%.

I sent them to my employer, who is using Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 97. My boss opened them with his system and they displayed on the screen at a view of 200%. He wants me to send him Word documents that he can open from the CD-R that I send that will automatically display at 100% view on the screen so that he does not have to set the view for each document as it displays.

So what is the answer.

Is there a way that I can save my created documents so that when my boss gets them on a CD-R that they will open on his system at a view setting of 100%.

Is there also a way that his system can be set to default to 100% in reading from the CD-R.

My boss does not want to copy the documents to the system hard disk from my sent CD-R, preferring to read and copy directly from the CD-R that I send, so that the original documents will not accidentally be changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

I lost a really important Word file that I opened by a webmail on IE7 by clicking "open" instead of "save." Then I edited the file yesterday and unfortuantely clicked "save" instead of "save as." Now I can't find the file, despite the fact that I turned on view hidden and system files. When I search for all files edited yesterday, it can't find anything!! I really need this file soon, so I appreciate the quick help.

As a test, today I opened the same file from Webmail and I again chose to "open" instead of "save." Then I edited it and then clicked "save." With it still open in Word, I looked at the "properties" and I found that it is in a subfolder of the "Content.IE5". After a lot of trouble I found a way to browse to Content.IE5, but I don't see that subfolder (\temporary internet files\low\content.IE5\QIM1AZLI) anywhere. In fact all the folders in the Content.IE5 folder seem to be most recently edited 2 or more days ago! It makes no sense. So either my Vista Home Basic is lying to me (it won't find that folder) or Microsoft Word is lying to me (there's really no such folder "QIM1ALZI"). I'm also worried that even if I found the folder "QIM1ALZI" that my file from yesterday (which is what I really need) will be in a different folder in the Content.IE5 folder.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Good afternoon people,

Firstly, I would like to say hello to everyone who've helped me in the past with my Access help. It's been a long absence with study commitments and such, but as is the purpose of this group, I would like to ask for some tech help:

The situation: Microsoft Word (as part of Office 2003 Professional Edition) frequently closes without user notification on my dad's laptop (Windows Vista Basic). It's recently started, and it interrupts his work. He says that the issue occurs when he minimises documents, but he didn't indicate a frequency of this occurrence. He also told me that once he successfully saves a document and closes Word, he then encounters issues when opening said document; it says that the file has been "corrupted" (I can't remember exactly what the dialog box says), and that the data can be recovered, or to proceed with opening the document. Data recovery doesn't work, and when he proceeds to open the document, Word returns "Program not responding" and "Critical error caused by the program" and other prompts of this nature, which then forces the program to quit.

I am aware that a similar problem is in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for Word 2003, but was last revised in 2004 (so covered only xp and 2000), and am not certain if this issue is the same for Windows Vista. It related to the "Handwriting Recognition" program.

Additionally, as always, there are a multitude of ... Read more

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

Would someone PLEASE help me figure my issue out. I am at a loss as to what I did on my laptop for Microsoft Word to just stop working. This is what's going on:
1. I open up Word; 2. I go to my documents & click on the doc I want to open; 3. I get the pop-up that states, for example, "The file Amer Hist Doc 3 is not available".

If I send the doc as an attachment in my email & then open it on another computer, it comes up fine. It just won't work on my laptop.

Did I accidently hit someone to make Word do this all of the sudden?? Do I just need to un-install Microsoft Office & then reinstall??

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lily

Merge to email does not seem to work using Word 2003 with Excel on Vista.

Word doc is merged with Excel spreadsheet that contains names and email addresses. The application works perfectly on Win XP but on the new Vista machine it works perfectly up to the point of clicking the merge to email icon on Word's merge toolbar, which is grayed out on the vista machine but fine on the xp machine.

Just to check my own sanity, i copied both word doc and spreadsheet over to my xp machine and it works fine. So Vista seems to be the culprit.

In a google search I turned up very little on the problem -- suggesting user error on my part -- but i did find a reference to the need for a win.ini entry (vista apparently does not have a win.ini) and then some other reference (though nothing substantive) about using a registry to supplant the win.ini entry.

I know the simple answer is to run it on the xp machine (mine) and not on the Vista machine (my wife's). Nuf said about that option.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have just got Windows Vista and installed Office 2003. However, Vista doesn't recognise that .doc files are associated with MS Word and will only open them in Notepad. I have been through the Open With... panel many times, taken it to \Program Files x86\MS Office\OFFICE11\winword.exe, but this doesn't get put in the Open With.. panel.

Any ideas??? Although I can start Word and then open the files that way, it doesn't make it easy, and I have problems opening files attached to e-mails.

Strangely, Word is associated with .wbk (Word backup) files.

I've just upgraded from Office XP, where it all worked fine.

I had a computer that had every problem known to computers, and bought a whole new computer for my job as an at-home medical transcriptionist. I had everything installed on my new computer for my job, MS Office 2003, XP Pro, and the proprietary software. For some reason when I make entries into autocorrect (word expansion is very important as I am paid on production and still a novice in this industry) they won't save after I shut down MS Word and reopen.
I somehow got the old computer functioning again and transferred the autocorrect file (MSO1033) from the old computer to the new. About 75% of those entries are functioning on the new computer. Because I had every possible problem (rootkits, hijackers, viruses, etc...) on the old computer I was trying not to take anything from the old computer, but I was desperate.

Hello,

I have a recently purchased laptop running Windows Vista 64-bit. The computer came with a pre-installed, trial version of Microsoft Office Student and Teacher edition 2007. I purchased Microsoft Office Student and Teacher edition 2003 a couple of years ago and wish to install this on the laptop running Windows Vista 64-bit.

Will this work? I should probably go ahead and uninstall Microsoft Office Student and Teacher edition 2007 before installing the 2003 version, right? I've also done some searching on this website and others on how to do this. Some suggest installing Office 2003, then visiting the Windows Update website before opening any Office programs.

Two people use my computer, Nathan and Michael.  Both are Administrators.  When Nathan is logged on his Word 2003 documents are saved in:
C:\...Nathan\Documents.  When Michael is logged on his Word 2003 documents are also saved in:  C:\Nathan\Documents.  Obviously, the way it should work is Nathan's Word documents should be saved under his log-in and Michael's documents should be saved under Michael's log-in.  I can't make that happen.  Here's what I've tried so far:

I go to Control Panel, Tools, Options, File Locations.  When I click Modify I can indicate a different folder for saving Word documents, but I can't change the location "Nathan."  Also, any change I make just adds the new extension to the existing.  Example:

C..\Nathan\Documents    Modified to:  C..\Nathan\Documents\Documents, etc.  Whatever I choose is added onto the existing location
C..\Nathan\Documents.

I hope I've explained this clearly.  Any Word 2003 experts out there who can help on this one?  It's really got me puzzled.  Thanks in advance.

Hi!

First time here as I'm usually about to fix my own computer issues.

Since my son got in somewhere on one of my computers, whenever I open Microsoft Outlook or Word, the "save as" dialog box appears wanting for me to save whatever at random. In Outlook especially, if I open it and receive an email, it'll wish for me to save the title of whatever it is as "whatever".htm. I'll continually cancel to not save anything, try to save what it wants me to, etc BUT it will continue to pop up. The same happens in word where I'm rendered helpless as it wishes for me to "save as" "Doc1" all the time. I'm not able to do anything else and neither program will close unless I open up task manager to "end task".

This has been going on for a week now and have had to manage my email on my ISP's webmail website. I've done virus scans - norton (even disabled it as I know it's a FUN program), performed office updates, clicked on the HELP - detect and repair but no avail. I'm thinking that my next step will be is to uninstall and reinstall after exporting my mail folders.

What do you think it could be?

Have you tried a different keyboard on your machine?

That's about all I can think of.

Also, grab a better Antivirus, such as AVG from www.grisoft.com

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I've searched for a solution to my problem on this site, but did not find anything specifically for this issue.

Problem is, Whenever I attempt to start Word, I get the following error message: "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Word will then revert to the "safe mode".

App. name and Mod name is winword.exe, Offset is 008ddf1c. I searched microsoft's website for info. and did not find anything pertaining to 008ddf1c. I also did a search on the web and did not find anything regarding the 008ddf1c error code either.

I uninstalled Word and reinstalled it (the issue is only with Word) also with service pack 3. I continued to get the same error message. I followed the troubleshooting instructions on Microsoft's webpage and installed the service template. When I attempted to start it, I got the same error message! So, I could not use the template to troubleshoot either.

Word will run in Safemode.

This just suddenly happened. I can't associate it with anything I did (who knows...) I also have open office on the computer, but I think this problem developed sometime after its installation

Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hey folks,

I switched from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Vista and my Microsoft Office 2003 isn't working on Vista for some reason. Is this supposed to happen or is there something I can do or something that I can download to make it work with Vista by any chance??? Or is there nothing I can do to make Office 2003 compatible with 64-bit Vista? Do I absolutely *HAVE* to have Office 2007 for 64-bit Vista?

Thanks in advance, folks!!

Does anyone noe weather vista Microsoft word support the old formated ones? Or is there any plug-in needed to support?

A:Does Vista Microsoft Word Support Old Format Microsoft Word?

I'm assuming you're talking about the new office 2007? meaning word 2007?

If that is the case, then yes it does run older versions of word. In the sense that if you have a word document that was made and saved in Word 2003 it would work in 2007.

Just like when you make something in word 2007 you are able to save it as a Word 03-07 document so it works on both versions of Microsoft Word.

Hi, Dusty. In this case, just do the typical Word troubleshooting steps described here:
www.theofficeexperts.com/word.htm

That should likely get you sorted out.

Hi,

My neighbor kid has been given a Publisher file for his schools newsletter - they want him to leave it on that. He has a brand new Dell laptop with Works 8.2 and a 60 day trial of Office. He doesn't want to spend the money...he's 13 on the post trial thing because Works is good enough for him and he's used to it. I suggested he by Publisher 2003 which you can now get for less than $50 new at places like barnesandnoble.com, but I can't seem to find out if Publlisher 2003 will work okay on Vista Basic. Anyone know?

Ok, so here's the story: everytime I open a document in MSWord 2003, its fine, opens and works and I can type and do whatever. The first time I save the file, it saves properly, however, if I CTRL+S again, it asks me to specify what file I want to save it as, and when I try to save it as the one I have open, it errors me, saying that the file that I have open is a read-only file. That's weird, because in the properties I can clearly see that its not read-only.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I un and reinstalled on my PC but the problem continues. Any help will be greatly appreciated =]

Thanks in advance.

BTW I am using XP and the in the blue bar of the open document it says "DocumentName (Read-Only)" after I try to save it for the second time.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post in, Im new, but I really need help because my comp has been acting weirdly these past few days.

A:Microsoft Word 2003 "Read-only" PROBLEM

you apparently are OPENING a R/O document.

find the document of choice,
right-click->properties

at the bottom; Attributes ... is r/o checked or unchecked?

Be sure to save your documents in your profile area:
\Documents and Settings\yourlogin\My Documents\... anywhere below this

Modify your Word Preferences to make the above the Default Directory

While typing a document, I did a stupid thing (stupid because I don't know what I did to do it).
The document now has the paragraph symbol before and after each paragraph. Also, each word is separated by a dot. What do I do to remove the symbol and dot?
And will the document still be readable?

After completing setup and customization of Word 2003, I discover that my new default blank page ignores the margins I've set. The cursor blinks right along the top edge of the page even though I've set a top margin of 1.25". Somehow, that's gotten into the basic configuration of Word as there's nothing I can do to get any blank page to load properly. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word, then copying from my other PC my Word 2000 normal.dot (which is how I originally set up Word 2003), and it still opens any default document with the cursor hugging the top edge of the page. I also tried opening a previously-created Word document with the same margin settings, erasing the content to make it a blank sheet, and using it to create a new normal.dot and a new startup.dot. The process of converting it to .dot format brings back the edge-hugging cursor which did not happen in the document before saving. Help!
Bob
