# Solved: Switching from non-genuine to genuine Ms Office

Q: Solved: Switching from non-genuine to genuine Ms Office

I had a non-genuine copy of Ms Office installed on my computer, and have now purchased a genuine copy. Uninstalling the old (non-genuine) copy is impossible because it doesn't have an uninstaller, and it doesn't even show in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. So I just installed my genuine copy in a different folder in Program Files, so that the non-genuine copy wouldn't interfere with the newly installed genuine copy.

The problem is that even though I tried opening Ms Word or Excel directly from the newly installed folder and not from the old link to the old version, it still gives me a message (like before) that says "Get Genuine Office - This copy of Office is not genuine".

How do I get rid of the old (non-genuine) Ms Office if I am unable to uninstall it? Please don't tell me to work on the registry - I don't want to touch the registry because I'm not a computer pro, and I won't know what I'm doing. I just want to get rid of the message that says get genuine Office.

I am using Windows XP Home.

Thank you

I was given a used computer and just recently I have been receiving notices on all my Office 2007 Professional programs that my software is not genuin. I want to buy a new Office program but want to save as much money as possible. In reading previous messages it looks like I would have a hard time uninstalling and installing the new software. I have looked at Costco and Ebay. Would it be better to go direct to Microsoft? This was an unintential error. I would like to solve it as easily as possible. I have Windows 7 operating system. Hi

I have an ASUS notebook (U31F i5 with 4 GB mem) which until recently I used only occasionally. It has Legit Office 2010, but no CD/DVD drive. My desktop hard disk crashed in a big way so I am using the notebook as my main computer.

It has just recently started throwing up messages that my Windows Homw Premium (x64) is not genuine. It is gebuine OEM and activated (back when I got the notebook), and I have not tampered in any way.

I have had a look at some other threads on this forum on this issue, and so have dowloaded and run MGAdiag.exe, but to my inexpert eye, it appears to report everything OK.

I have pasted text in below, and would welcome more expert advice as to whther I have missed something, and if not, what should I do next?

regards

PB

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new U... Read more

My computer (from lenovo) came with windows 7 (home). Because I run a domain within my lan, I purchased and downloaded windows 7 64 bit professional. Today I downloaded and ran System Mechanic pro (trial version) from Iola site. After running it and rebooting, my system shows that the system is not activated (windows is not genuine is show on desktop). After I ran MGADialog the log files show Genuine state set to non-genuine (0x00000000) for application Id 55c92. Also MGADialog showed :

A:My Genuine activation issue although I have a genuine license

Interesting.
The error message
...is a pretty specific one, and almost always means that the machine has been reinstalled using media other than the manufacturer's Recovery media, while still using the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key instead of the COA Key.

For what version and edition of Windows is the machine licensed - according to the COA sticker on the case (or inside the battery compartment)

Hello and thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

A couple of days ago I was downloading some video files and since I wasn't paying attention I clicked an .exe instead of a video file. I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

I recently downloaded SP1 to my Windows 7 machine and shortly thereafter a message appeared on the lower right hand corner indicating that "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine". I bought this machine used and so I verified the key with Microsoft and it is a genuine OEM key but try as I may there is nowhere to enter a product key. I go to start-computer-right click- and at the bottom under Windows Activation it states Status: Not Available - Product ID: Not Available and NO place to enter a product key. Also all of the DOS commands that I can find on the Net do not seem to work either. When I contact Microsoft support they are no help at all and tell me I need to do a CLEAN install with the disk that came with my machine. The only problem is that no disk came with this machine. I have also been told by "Tech support" since I have an OEM key I just cannot use ANY install win 7 disk. I have a TON of Apps. loaded on this machine and it TICKS me off that I have a VALID OEM key and seemingly no way to enter or fix which I suspect is a Microsoft bug to begin with as they have overshot to prevent piracy. Someone Please help!

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I just finished restoring my computer and installing updates and my office software asked to validate itself over the internet and when it was done it left a folder called Office Genuine Advantage in my user folder. My office is genuine so this isn't a hide the notification thing or anything, just that there is an annoying folder in my user folder. All it contains is another folder (Data) which itself contains only one file, oaddin.dat. Can I delete this folder or is it and the one file there for a reason?

Hello Marty Marshalek,

That file is the program that makes you validate your copy of Microsoft Office to download non-critical updates and other downloads such as addons, samples etc.

I would just leave it there.

HI,a few months ago I bought a used computer from a dealer.it came with installs of WindowsXp and Office2003. All was well for awhile but now suddenly I started getting messages stating that the office2003 is not genuine and it failed the test.Along with that they told me how to aquire a genuine copy of it. i dont undeestand why this is.If the guy who installed it is paying Microsoft for each time he installs it on a computer, why are they saying all of a sudden that its not genuine.
one thing that has changed is that I bought a used laptop with open office installed and i have been sending files from there to the computer with office on it,and vice versa.could this be why?
I went ahead and uninstalled office and installed open office, because i am not paying Microsoft for something that i already paid the guy who installed the software

Hi,

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Used since Win7 came out with no genuinity issues until now.

A short while after the SP1 update I started getting popups claiming my Windows is not genuine. I know for a fact that my Windows is genuine.

Properties show my Windows is activated. I have activated both online and by phone yet the popup still keeps appearing. The MGA diagnostics show that there is a tampered file and apparently it is causing the validation to flag my system as not genuine:

Admin Service: Registered, Version: 7.1.7600.16395
Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\slcext.dll|slcext.dll.mui
I have tried to fix this for a while now. The file seems to be associated with MUI packages and Something called Vistalizator.

I have checked the registry and there are no MUI's. US-EN only. I do not have anything called Vistalizator.

I am rather frustrated with googling in microsoft pages as they all lead to the Vistalizator and MUI packs but I don't have them so the fix does not apply.

My HP Pavilion dv6 laptop suddenly has decided Windows is not Genuine. I put in the number on the bottom of the laptop and it says it is verified and good. But then after a while it goes back to saying it is not Genuine. I am out of the country at the moment, and I need to fix this in the meantime. I do Slui 3 and fix it, because if I try to go online to do this it won't finish it up, it just sits there loading. I haven't had issues with this laptop at all otherwise. Been using it for years. Bought it brand new. I do have virus protection but I am beginning to wonder if this is a virus? Or something like that? You would think that after entering the right number and getting the yes this is valid that it would be fine?

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Home Basic OEM pre-installed, it was genuine and had COA on the bottom of laptop.
Accidentally, at that time I was 12 years old, so I don't know about 'crack', 'hack', software counterfeit, etc. . Thus, I thought my Windows was 'low', I want to upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate version with Windows Anytime Upgrade.

I searched key generator (keygen) on internet, I found it and generated the code (for Windows 7 Ultimate). Then, I pasted the serial number (product key) to Windows Anytime Upgrade. First, it was failed. So I cancelled the upgrade. But, when the laptop's shutdown and I turn it on again, it was upgrading to the Windows 7 Ultimate. How weird!

Now, I know the pirated / not genuine Windows is not safe, against the law, etc.

My question, is, I restored it to the genuine version of my Windows (7 Home Basic OEM) using my product key.
But I downloaded the setup using the Windows 7 Ultimate pirated (using keygen) that I told you...
Is my Windows become 'not genuine'?
After I restored it, It is very good, clean, doesn't contain virus or error, works perfectly. Then I upgraded it to Windows 10 Home.
Is it okay? Or I should buy the DVD to perform clean install so it is 100% clean?

Thanks

Hello, I am using an Acer Aspire 5738G, which originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Later I got the free Windows 7 Home Premium update disc and never encountered any problem.

But since the last 1 month or so, I've been getting this 'Windows not genuine' message on a random basis. Microsoft Security Essentials says that it will disable itself within 30 days if the issue is not resolved. When I click on 'Resolve issue', an IE window is opened and takes me to Microsoft's website. When I do all the steps explained, everything goes back to normal and my Windows is again considered as genuine.

I am a bit worried, although I can always solve the problem, it still irritates me when I see the 'Windows not genuine' message. What could be the cause of the problem and what is the solution?

Hello all, and thank you for the oppurtunity to post.
I got a Pop-up, titled Microsoft Security Essential, which states I am infected by a Trojan. At the same time I was surprised to see a Windows Genuine notification , which stated that because I have made major changes since I first loaded Windows XP Pro, I now have to reactivate windows. Is this for real? The Microsoft notice will not go away no matter what I do, it sits in the middle of the screen and resists all efforts to close. If this is a Virus I am sure I will need Help in removing. Thanking you in advance,

A friend of mine has a Windows XP Home Edition machine running Service Pack 2. She called me along this afternoon because she has been having problems with the machine for several weeks! Anyway this machine runs Norton Internet Security Center which was up to date as of a few weeks ago, but because of her problem it no longer seems able to complete its update process although she has 322 days left of her subscription. I tried several times but each time the update process terminated after doing some of the downloads. There is also an icon in her system tray area (right hand side) which refers to the non-genuine windows message and tells her to clickon it to resolve the non-genuine Windows problem.

The problem she has is that on boot up she gets a message saying that her version of Windows is not genuine (it is since it was supplied with the machine 4 years ago) and what is more it talks about Windows XP Professional whereas she has Windows XP Home. In addition to these messages which give her the option to resolve the problem now or later, she gets pop-ups at various times saying that her copy of Windows is not genuine, maybe counterfeit etc.

In addition when these problems started to occur she says she was no longer able to connect to the internet (she has a router and broadband) - I noticed that her connection was disabled so I re-enabled this and we can now connect to the Internet.

She also has problems with IE (think it is V8) whereby it comes up with an error aft... Read more

I have a laptop purchased several years ago off e-bay with Win 7 installed and it worked fine for well over a year but then I got the " This in not a genuine win 7 blah blah and black screen. It was a little late to return the computer like over a year or more so I have just been using it with ugly accusatory messages and black screen! Ok Microsoft you win, I bought a legit new two DVD 32 and 64 bit Win 7. Since the machine came with the Ultimate version I bought the ultimate version.

Here is what I want to know. How do I substitute this genuine version for my bad version without losing my other programs? I don't want to start all over as I have a whole lot of programs that I want to keep as is. Can I do that?

Hello w6k and welcome to Seven Forums.

If everythig is working OK on your computer it should be just a simple matter of changing the invalid Product Key with the PK from your newly purchased disk.

What makes it not Genuine??

Is it the Key?

A:What makes Microsoft Office not Genuine

Any pirated copy of any Microsoft software is considered not Genuine.
Yes, it is linked to reported "Pirated" copies and the reported keycode, but MS has other ways of telling, which I am sure they will NOT disclose.

Office Genuine Notifications update (kb949810) will not download with error message 0x8007643 to which there is only one resolution offered and that has not worked. It was to start the Office Source Engine service. I did and it still will not start. I have disabled antivirus programs and firewalls already. What else can I try.

Hi,

Not come across this before. Please could you post the exact error message; a screen shot would be perfect.

Is this on your home computer? Do you have access to another machine and if so does it work on that?

I recently discovered that the Office on my computer was not genuine, so I bought a genuine one from the Microsoft's site, which I installed hoping that things will be fine. However, even after installation, every time I open up Outlook, Words...the same pop up comes up saying that the programme installed is not genuine.

I contacted customer care in the USA, and they were able to identify that I have 2 versions running on my machine. They suggested removing one (?or both) Office 2007, and then install the genuine one. However, to do this would be rather disastrous as I had finally got together my outlooks and its many many many emails. I don’t want to start afresh and lose all my emails.

I need to contact the UK customer service, but it is a telephone number, so I will try to call them from work. In the meantime, does any clever person have any idea on a solution?

Many many thanks

Linda

A:Problems with Office 2007- 2 versions running (1 genuine, but not the other 1)

you should able to backup you emails, on older versions I would suggest you just copy the PST file, however, on 2007 I think they use a ost - so not sure about that...

I will try and lookup 2007 outlook backup
EDIT
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070/en-us
above is a link to an article to backup 2007

I have already carried this out on 2007
I exported 2007 to a new PST file and then copied that to a different machine and imported as a datafile on 2003 - this was just as a data file, so I have not checked the contacts etc, as I said its imported as a data file - so i have all the emails

I haven't changed the Office software on this machine since well....ever. It's MS Office 2003 Pro. Ran the updates tonight and rebooted as required and when I opened Outlook, I get the message saying that my Office software is NOT the GENUINE thing.
I checked my update history on the MS UPDATE site and it installed a genuine validation tool....yet again. I've never gotten this message before and am wondering why...is this a false positive or did I pick up some kind of virus?

BTW, suddenly, my spysweeper software won't update the definitions saying that the keycode in inactive, but my subscription expires in July 2010.

These to occurrences are why I would even suspect a possib;e virus of some sort. My NOD32 hasn't picked up anything and a spysweeper scan came up clean.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

the only problem i have now is a message in bottom right of screen saying

i have read the forums and seen a few others with the same problem but they seem to have been built by owner or added to in some way. i have done nothing to this machine regarding upgrading/changing system

THIS IS ABOUT WINODWS 7, NOT WINDOWS VISTA

I've downloaded the windows 7 RC and entered the correct code etc. It worked for a couple of days, and I'd acivated it online. But now boxes pop up saying it's not genuine and it resets my theme. How can I fix this? I could post this on the windows 7 forum as the sticky says, but I figure if someone knows a quick fix on here, I may as well ask.

A:[SOLVED] windows 7 is not genuine

OK, I've fixed it myself. It turned out it de-activated itself when I reset the BIOS by unplugging and plugging in the CLRTC on my motherboard. The activation wouldn't work because the clock had changed back to 2007. All I had to do was change the date back to now, and activate it online :)

I'll mark this as solved.

First of all Hi. There is something that has been bothering me for some time now and since I have found people here that have a lot more knowledge than me I decided to bother you.
Is it true that having Genuine Windows requires you to have Genuine software installed on your system only? (Meaning downloading cracks or similar files will mess up your OS)
I have been told that from someone since I want to finally get a legit copy of Windows.(Yes I know!) Although I've recently found out that Microsoft does not sell Retail copies of Windows 7 on their site anymore and support for that particular OS will soon stop, so the remaining solution could be Windows 8.
What is your advice on what OS to get?

I thank you in advance!

We can't help you here if you are running a pirated version of Windows and asking whether or not pirated software will run on a legitimate copy. Please read the forum rules.

Hello all...

I've recently had MAJOR hardware problems with my laptop and just got it back today. I had the 90-day trial of Windows 7 Enterprise installed, with 75 days left on it. I got it back and it was fine, but the taskbar was freezing up at times. So, I performed a System Restore, but it was still freezing up. I then performed another System Restore, but set it back further (9/28, I believe). This was before I activated it. Now whenever I start it up, I get the message saying that Windows is not genuine.

Is a clean installation the only way to fix this? Quite the design flaw...

Thanks for any help I can get.

A few weeks ago I had a problem with my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. The firewall stopped working and I was hit with some viruses. My antivirus provider helped clean up the viruses and malware. I then had to contact Microsoft and paid them to fix the firewall, which required them to rebuild something in a lengthy process.

Now, when I turn on my computer, it asks me to activate windows and type in a product key, which I do not have. When I skip this step, I get to my desktop. In the lower right hand corner of the screen, it now says "This copy of Windows is not genuine," and I get a popup telling me I am not eligible for updates.

Any suggestions on how to correct this situation?

I have been running W7 64 bit since the RC, purchased the home upgrade version prior to it's expiration. I installed that using my retail XP disk, then after running it for a while, I had a hard drive failure. Couldn't find my XP disk, So since my wife wants to run W7 on hers, I decided to buy a full retail copy of W7 home for mine, and pass the upgrade version to her.

I installed the full version onto a new hard drive in my computer, and activated online with no errors. Upgraded hers to my old copy, and it also activated with no issues.

Issue is that now maybe 4 months later, I'm getting the message stating that it's not a valid copy. Hers is running fine with no issues at all.

What options do I have other than a complete reinstall? (tiresome and boring considering the size of some of the programs I have!)

Also, I do not want or need the 100 meg 'system reserved' partition, how do I get rid of that?

Dear Microsoft Customer,

Please notice that Microsoft company has recently issued a Security Update for OS Microsoft Windows. The update applies to the following OS versions: Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows Millenium, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista.

Please notice, that present update applies to high-priority updates category. In order to help protect your computer against security threats and performance problems, we strongly recommend you to install this update.

Since public distribution of this Update through the official website http://www.microsoft.com would have result in efficient creation of a malicious software, we made a decision to issue an experimental private version of an update for all Microsoft Windows OS users.

As your computer is set to receive notifications when new updates are available, you have received this notice.

In order to start the update, please follow the step-by-step instruction:
1. Run the file, that you have received along with this message.
2. Carefully follow all the instructions you see on the screen.

If nothing changes after you have run the file, probably in the settings of your OS you have an indication to run all the updates at a background routine. In that case, at this point the upgrade of your OS will be finished.

We apologize for any inconvenience this back order may be causing you.

I was running a couple of registry and malware cleaners when some things such as my facebook page got all messed up. Now it says my copy of windows is not genuine, but it came with my computer, which I've had for years. Why is it saying this all the sudden. How do I tell it that it really is genuine? Do I have to wipe my whole computer and start again? I really don't like that it's saying my copy isn't genuine when I payed for it.

What I think to have caused the problem is in this previous thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/1052878-solved-iconcache-db-missing.html

You guys asked me to make a new thread, so.

Anyway, after doing that last fix and booting the computer the next day, I got an error saying I may be a victim of software counterfitting, followed by a black wallpaper with a not genuine message at the bottom right. I need to get it working again so I can get updates, and I've lost my Windows 7 Home Premium key which makes this all the more difficult to fix with normal tech support from Microsoft.

I'm pretty sure since it was caused by that registry file (I do believe so) that you guys would know best how to undo this.

The best way to fix this is to go thru the authentication process with Win XP and when there call the telephone number that is presented and explain what has happened and for about $100.00 for Home and$150.00 for Pro you will get a new disk and key code. Note: These are just approximations on the cost.

I have begun to receive a message that states that I am not running genuine windows product. I am assuming this is referring to a pirated or bootlegged product (if that's possible). Anybody have an idea as to why I am receiving this message? My OS software is Genuine, I have the disk, serials etc. and registered when I installed it over a year ago. I have run Malware bytes and my spyware programs and come up clean, Microsoft Security Essentials runs always and is showing nothing. How can I resolve this? Its wierd because I was on the point of getting Windows defender (or formely known as Microsoft anti-spyware) and i had to go through a key validation test,Unfortunately it didnt pass,I wonder why.

My computer started off with Windows ME and then I had my uncle come over and install Windows XP Pro on my computer (a couple o' years back) and so everything worked fine, untill now.

Do u think i shouldve bought my own XP cd? or is there something we can fix?

If someone bothers to explain why it wouldnt work I'd greatly appreciate it!

Windows making me LOL as usual.

I logged into my computer after restarting to install updates. Upon logging in, I received the message "Windows has not passed Windows Genuine Validation. Microsoft Security Essentials will deactivate in 30 days." I clicked resolved, and everything acted normal as far as MSE. It then opened a webpage ( http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/?displaylang=en&PartnerID=258 ) and it opened a download ( WGAPluginInstall.exe ). I tried installing this plugin, and it gave me an error (Installation failure. Failed to copy files. [Error: 0x80070003])

However, I am very sure my copy of Windows is genuine. I had installed it from retail installation media and properly activated Windows over the phone (my internet was down at the time). None of the contents of the disc were modified, except I had opened the disc with nLite before installing and inserted a few drivers and reburned the disc so that Windows would not kernel panic on me when entering the XP setup.

My son-in-law gave me a mini hp laptop he had purchased at Walmart. It came with Windows 7 on it. His family had used it for a year and no longer wanted it. I ran System Restore and restored it to it's original state. It was running fine for a couple weeks, now it suddenly says the Windows 7 is not genuine. Not sure if the Windows 7 product key is the same as the activation code or not, but it has mostly rubbed off with use. I was able to use software to get the Windows Product key, but it won't accept it. Not knowing what I need to do, I followed a post I found online and ran CHKDSK and something called SFC. That didn't produce anything but to tell me it didn't find any integrity violation.

I have also tried to restore it to original state again thinking I may have done something to corrupt a file, but it won't give me access to the recovery drive again. I can only restore it to an earlier restore point. I went back to the first one available, but that didn't help. The recovery drive is there, but I can't find a way to access it.

The notebook is an HP Mini 110 1116NR

I went online to correct it and followed instructions to re-enter code. It now tells me 0xC004F063 The Software Licensing Service reported the bios is missing a required license.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can do?

Thanks
Peg

Do you know how to remove windows genuine install message?

It pops up everytime I start my computer in the middle of my screen...
I must click Cancel to close it (cancel installation of wga, cause this pop up offers me installation). It's so annoying.

I don't wanna install it, it was installed on my computer already and it was hard to completely remove it!
I've must downloaded it with my updates for windows or someone else did, who uses my computer...

A:[SOLVED] Windows genuine install message

WGA was probably downloaded with a normal Windows update. Windows Update installs the WGA as part of the standard update package.

It will keep popping up until you install it. Is there a reason why you don't want it installed? If your copy of windows is legit, there's no reason not to have it installed.

You could always install it, and then have it removed. There's a ton of patch programs out there that will remove that portion of the update. Do a google search for WGA remover.

Hey guys,

I understand i'm new here and haven't made any posts yet, but I am in dire need for some unofficial tech help!

Basically have been running an OEM version of Windows 7 64-bit on a custom built machine (Possibly bought this from Amazon or another online retailer)
Recently i disposed of the retail box but kept a backup of the serial code on my computer, as I moved into my University accommodation and didn't need it.

So I boot up my PC after having windows 7 installed for at least 8 months or so, and my desktop is black with "this copy of windows is not genuine" (build 7600).
I rang Microsoft for an explanation and after being moved through 3 departments I was asked for my serial code and was told I had to buy a new code as this code was "MSDN" or something and was counterfeit. I tried explaining to the guy that i bought my OEM license from a reputable retailer (like I said, I think it's Amazon or possibly Play.com) but the only answer he'd give me is to buy a new copy, or to contact the retailer directly, and refused to pass me up to a supervisor.

How the heck am I supposed to demand a refund for a product they supplied to me 8 months ago?? I'm about to call them now but was hoping for any advice at all if possible whether its a number to call or soemthing I can check on my PC.

I would be so grateful for the help!
Thanks guys,

Tom

EDIT:
Sorry just to clarify,I haven't installed my OEM serial on any other machine, or updated my motherboard! :/... Read more

A:Genuine bought OEM now "not genuine"

I would keep trying to get a supervisor on the line. The first tier of call center monkeys probably have to get approval from a supervisor anyway before they can tell anyone anything other than "buy a new key". It's possible that you were scammed into paying for a pirated or hacked windows disk. Some of the counterfeits I've seen pictures of can look legitimate until you compare them to the real thing, however, I think it's more likely that you ended up talking to a couple of douchebags who enjoy using what little power they have to ruin someone's day. Hello,
Im in a trouble, so im hoping that you will help me.
I had a genuine windows 7 for a laptop a while ago, then i sent the laptop to my parents in a different country.
So i bought a new pc, without a operating system, driven by a lack of money i downloaded the old not genuine xp. Along came problems, unknown errors, bugs, etc.
Like for example, now i cannot start safe mode, i cannot make a new partition thru cmd or partition magic cause of somekind of file xmnt.exe is missing.
Sadly, i want to keep my bought games and programs, 'cause my internet is pretty slow, so it will take for ages to redownload/reinstall everything.

The question is: Can i upgrade my not genuine windows xp to windows 7 by buying it and installing like it's a common program keeping all of the programs/games/etc.?

Thank you in advance.

A:Upgrade not genuine windows xp to genuine windows 7.

Sadly if you are looking to regain stability your best bet would be a fresh install of windows 7
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

as outlined there you can do a fresh install with the upgrade disc, this would result in the loss of your games and programs, though do a straight upgrade from xp to win 7 without cleaning out the garbage is just going to make win 7 run horribly too.

Hello.
I am new to this forum and i hope I am posting in the right section. I have created this account for the sole purpose with help to this question as I have exhausted my know how with computers as to solving the problem.
Here's the story.

Prequel
Being bored with vista's looks, i decided to grab enigma desktop mod. It's great! now i needed to find a visual style that complimented it. I found the perfect one. double great! Problem: it requires replacing system files in order for it to render properly. The files were as follows.

browseui.dll
shell32.dll
timedate.cpl
explorer.exe

Part I: The Work
The one draw back is that the 64 bit theme required making my own shell32 and timedate via a resource editor. I said "No biggie. I'm pretty beast at this stuff and should be fine doing this." So i used resource hacker, which I think was my first mistake. I replaced the 42 folder in shell32 with one provided and compiled. I replaced the pngs of the white clock on the side bar with ones provided and compiled. I added them to the system32 folder and replaced the other two things. I (luckily) made backups of all the origional files.

Part II: Problem
I had made the switches and felt like starting up a program when a message hit me in the face saying "cannot start because we cannot locate shell32.dll" or something of that nature. I thought this was weird. I went to the system32 folder, searched for the shell32.dll which i had already copied in... Read more

The purchase was through Amazon and a company in Laguna Hills, Ca. The price was decent and I've never had a problem with Amazon before so why not? Got the package today in the mail and just opened it. The upper edge of the blue Windows 7 cardboard sleeve is bent over and slightly separated. The shrink wrap is wrinkled in the same area. Removing the plastic case from the cardboard holder I can see that the seal appears to be compromised. There is a 'bar or line' which is part of the seal that is showing red except near the center, where it is silver. Also, the squiggly line that runs the length of the seal along the words 'Win Pro 7 English US only DVD' seems to be slightly separated. I've never dealt with anything like this before and could use some advice. Is there a way of using the numbers on that label to tell if this is genuine or should I try to get a new copy? And a message popped up saying "This is NOT Genuine Windows, please purchase one online or locally". And I had to pay like$300.00 on the Windows website! Could anyone help?

A:Not genuine eh?

strange indeed, but you can uninstall the update. there's an option in the "installed updates" window. I would recommend you to do this. From what I've seen posted around the internet, there are issues with this update including ethical ones.

I recently installed a client update for MSE today, and when I opened it up out of interest, I saw quite a noticeable difference:

The background was changed, and now the software calls your computer a PC, and a new system to report malware to Microsoft called MAPS.

I just need to clarify whether this is legit or bogus. Anyone else got this?

A:Is this genuine?

Hello Peter,

Other than you having MSE maximized, it looks just like mine does.

version: 4.0.1526.0

Hope this helps,
