Q: Microsoft Word 2003 doesn't have "Save As" function

Microsoft Word 2003 on my Sony Vaio laptop doesn't have a Save As function, either in the File menu or as shortcut Alt+F A. It's not even there as a disabled/greyed out option - the options under File go straight from Save to Save as a webpage. Any ideas what could have happened "Save As" or how to restore it?

I use microsoft word on a mac. Whenever i click "save as" the box that opens up seems to be too big and the "save" and "cancel" buttons are out of sight, below the screen. I can remedy this by clicking the "^" button and then dropping it down again but it's annoying. Any remedies?

Hi Tech Support Guys,

I did a really dumb thing. After 10 hours of transcribing a huge document in Word 2003, I also had this other document open at the same time for reference, and then I accidently saved that other file over top of my transcription file name.

I know, stupid, stupid, stupid.

Now I have lost my original transcript. I do have autosave working every 10 minutes, but I never activated Word's backup feature.

Am I really as scr*wed as I think I am?

I've got Windows XP Pro, running Office 2003. When I right click on a Word file, and go to "Save As", it will only give me the options to save the new file as a Word 2007, or a Word 2007 Macro-enabled Document (.docm)

How do I change this, as no one in my company uses Office 2007 yet? I know I can open the document and save it as a .doc file from there, but just thought I'd try to find a way to simplify the process. Thanks in advance!!

I have a Windows issue (happening on Win XP, Vista and 7), that when I try saving a document, normally the Save dialogue box appears and "Save as type: " would normally show the file extension. Instead, now it's only listing "All Files (*.*)" and adding the file extenison to the "File name: " box just above.
I have also checked / unchecked the "Hide extensions for known file types" in the "Folder Options", both settings not changing anything to the Save box.
Had anyone come across this issue, and how can I once again have the File extentions in the 'drop down' list instead of just "All Files"?

Hello John, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The "Save as" available file extension options will vary per program. By default, there should be a drop down menu available where the "All Files (*.*)" is to select from what is available for it though. Since there isn't, you might consider a repair install.

I'm running Office 2003 in Windows 10 (upgraded from Windows 7) with no visible issues.

Except that when I want to save a Word document using "Save As" it prompts me for all sorts of unsuitable locations...My Music, My Pictures, My Videos, and some random programs which somehow landed up in the "Documents" folder. None of the shortcuts I'd like to see there (and which are in the folder, because I put them there!) show up. What to do?

I have Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 installed. The processor is a Pentium 4 3ghz. I have 13gb free on the drive and have 1024mb memory installed. The problem is when I try to save a document in Microsoft Office nothing happens. The hourglass comes up and freezes. I have uninstalled my Office Pro 2000 and reinstalled but still have the same problem. The save and save as features still work with the PowerPoint.

Would someone PLEASE help me figure my issue out. I am at a loss as to what I did on my laptop for Microsoft Word to just stop working. This is what's going on:
1. I open up Word; 2. I go to my documents & click on the doc I want to open; 3. I get the pop-up that states, for example, "The file Amer Hist Doc 3 is not available".

If I send the doc as an attachment in my email & then open it on another computer, it comes up fine. It just won't work on my laptop.

Did I accidently hit someone to make Word do this all of the sudden?? Do I just need to un-install Microsoft Office & then reinstall??

INFO ONLY for those suddenly having "no response" with MS Office 2003/2007 Word:

Weeks ago I suddenly got a problem with Microsoft Word (Office 2003) usually failing to respond , unable to open or save files, and just "hourglass thinking". In fact I frequently had to go to Task Manager to close it. Tried everything I could think of and read in sites (renaming "", reloading MS Office 2003, loading MS Office 2007 with same result, removing Adobe 9 Pro that had been loaded a week before, using "repair" command.............and nothing worked. Finally I found a solitary blog input somewhere saying that the person with same problem on Vista resolved it by uninstalling "Office Live DD-on 1.4". I had installed that a few weeks before I discovered the problem and never used Office on Vista PC since installation. I uninstalled "Office Live Add-ON 1.4" after many hours of trying other things.............and PROBLEM FIXED!
On my XP laptop and desktop, that Add-On has no impact on Office programs but is apparently a problem with Vista. I did not see any such notice on Microsoft site.

Ok, so here's the story: everytime I open a document in MSWord 2003, its fine, opens and works and I can type and do whatever. The first time I save the file, it saves properly, however, if I CTRL+S again, it asks me to specify what file I want to save it as, and when I try to save it as the one I have open, it errors me, saying that the file that I have open is a read-only file. That's weird, because in the properties I can clearly see that its not read-only.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I un and reinstalled on my PC but the problem continues. Any help will be greatly appreciated =]

BTW I am using XP and the in the blue bar of the open document it says "DocumentName (Read-Only)" after I try to save it for the second time.

How can I lock the "Now" or "TODAY" or "Date" FUNCTIONs IN Excel 2003?

This seems like it would be a simple solution as everybody that deals with Excel, at some point, would be interested in not having the dates you have entered with either function "Today" or "Now" NOT automatically change to the current date and time when you reload the workbook. But if it's a simple fix, I sure haven't been able to figure it out yet. Help!!!!!!!!!!! Go ahead and show me and make me feel like an idiot...

I installed some software to assist me in converting .pdf docs. I didn't keep the name of the software but did uninstall it via control panel.

I now have mulitiple "File" menu entries: 29 entries between "open" and "save". The entires are all idenical, "Open PDF"

Nothing happens when I click on them. How can I remove them from my "File" menu?

Apologies if this is a duplicate post. I have not been able to find a similar problem anywhere on Google or in the forums.

My "Documents" library points to a network location on a corporate network. Recently, our IT department had an issue with permissions and had to copy the location to a new folder location. When I attempted to repoint my "Documents" library to the new location, all my libraries simply broke.

Symptoms I am experiencing:

1. I am able to open the Library's "Properties" page, but it is frozen. The only buttons that work are "OK" and "Cancel". I can click on the other buttons and the drop down, but nothing happens when I do. The window just sits there and says "Calculating"

2. The "Save As" option doesn't work on some programs, but does work on others. I suspect this is because some programs are querying Windows 7 for the default save location and it is invalid (probably null) in Windows. Other programs are pulling up the location that I last saved at or where the file opened currently resides. That's just a guess though.

Resolutions I have already attempted:

I have deleted all libraries and then used the "Restore Default Libraries" function. This has no effect.

I have deleted all libraries and then created a new library called "Documents". I went in to the newly created "Documents" folder and clicked on "Include a folder". This allowed... Read more

I have been using windows 10 for about a year with no significant problems. However, recently, when I go to "save as" in any MS file it no longer gives me the Explorer view of my various files. Instead I get the attached view to save my files.

For all of my long time use of MS anytime I did "save as" it would navigate and display the contents of my folders and subfolders I used to organize my file on my hard drive, I chose which folder or file to save it to from there. Now I see the attached.

As I said earlier, I have been using Windows 10 for about a year now but recently changed to a HP laptop from a Dell. Previous windows 10 did the ?save as? in the traditional manner it went directly to windows explorer when I did a "save as" file. I do not think that changing to HP should have anything to do with it no longer saving.

It's now File Explorer since Win8 and just saying you have Win10 doesn't cut it anymore, need to know more about the Version and the Build number as there's 2 versions of Win10 available, one is the RTM and the other is the Insider Preview [BETA/test] version and they can look and maybe work a bit different. The RTM is probably 1511 and the other is 1607. The Anniversary Update is also Version 1607 but is slow getting to the RTM installs.

It looks like you are doing the Save As from within a program, might be important to know which. At the top of the list of files where it says Documents is an up arrow, click that to move to different Folders to make a different choice.

My HP, Dell and Toshiba Notebooks work the same using Version 1511 Build 10586.545.

I just discovered this problem today, when I attempted to "right" click, an Adblock Plus link to save from my Firefox 1.0.7 browser. When the "save as" window popped up, the option bar at the bottom only gave me the "save as type": HTML file, instead of XPI file. I also tried this from another location, with the same result.

I also repeated the same steps with my Opera browser, and the option bar gave me the correct options to "save as type": XPI file, text file, or all files.

Has anyone encountered this type of problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed. 

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading. 
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.

I've had windows 10 for several months (previously had windows 7). Up until yesterday, when I clicked on "all apps" an alphabetical list would come up, I'd scroll to what I wanted, and click on it. If there was an item with a sublisting, like Microsoft office a down symbol would appear. Click on that and the sublisting would appear and I could select word, excel, etc. Now when I click on the down symbol it just flips to an up symbol ^ and no sub menu appears. I'd really like to get to excel. This failure to bring up a sub menu happens for every down symbol, not just Microsoft office. What do I do? Try to re-load Windows 10? Uninstall and reinstall Office? Hi, do you have any idea what happened yesterday? For example, if you look at your update history- did you receive an update?

Do you have System Restore on, and do you have any useful restore points?

Do you use system imaging (Windows Backup and Restore) or disk imaging which we keep strongly recommending here; that means you can restore an image previously created and get your Windows back running as was without technical help - and even recover from a disk failure or an unbootable PC? (e.g. Macrium reflect (free)).

Those could give you ways to recover.

What is your build version? (Windows key + R, winver).

If you haven't started using those vital recovery methods yet, you could try this:

I was trying to find out if there is a possibility to save not all the text material on a Word2007 file, but only the changes. Is there such a possibility on Word2003? I need this as when I have a text file with images in it, it takes a long time to save and sometimes the program freezes, until the saving is finished and one has to wait before they do some other work.
Any ideas?

A:The "save" function on Word2007

If you try to exit Word without saving, a dialog box appears asking if you would like to save changes made to the document. As far as I know, this will save your changes only.

That being said, I'd recommend using a different program for a document that contains multiple images. Though Word 2007 has made some serious improvements to its capabilities with images, Powerpoint is still a much better program for image-heavy content. Consider moving your document into Powerpoint. You can format at it to be a standard document instead of a presentation.

I'm trying to take a heavily edited Word 2010 document and copy and paste all the tracked changes (insertions and deletions) into a separate document, simply to know the extent of the editing I have to do. I am editing a revision of a textbook, and I'm only supposed to edit the changes from the first edition. I need to know the exact word count of material that needs to be edited so that I can estimate my time and charges.

No "find" function can find inserted or deleted words. You have to use the "Review," "Next change" (or Alt + -> buttons).

I'm trying to record a macro that will do this:

Find the next change in Document 1
Copy the change, and paste it into Document 2

Return to Document 1, and then find the next change.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the end of Document 1.
When I record my steps, the macro code doesn't show the "Find next change" step. So when I try to run the macro, it tells me to select text first.

Here is the VBA string I created just by having Word follow my clicks, but it doesn't show the first steps I did, which was "Go to next change."

Two questions:
1. Is there any way to code for "Go to next change"?
2. If I temporarily add some unique text (e.g., PineapplesinHawaii) to the end of the document, how do I tell the macro to run until it reaches that text?

I'm not sure if this is a Word problem, Outlook or network...

We are using Word 2000 and Outlook 2000 on NT 4.0 workstation, NT Server, Exchange Server 5.5...

When my user is in Word he saves his document then selects File/Send To/Mail Recipient as an Attachment
He gets the e-mail interface, but when he clicks on the address book the Global Address book is not available. Nor are his contacts.

His Outlook works fine and he's able to get the address book fine. We tried having Outlook open when he's in Word and it makes no difference.

It works fine for me at my machines...I can't find any setting in Word or Outlook that helps with this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys, first off I haven't been here for help in years literally this was the first place I thought of because a few years ago many generous people helped me solve my problem, this place is awesome. Please pardon me as I am only decently literate with computers but try my best.

Ok I am trying to solve an annoying problem for my parent's computer. My dad was typing a normal document in Microsoft Word (OS is XP with System Pack 2, and it is Word 2002) and he said that just yesterday for the first time, after typing for maybe a half hour, a window would pop up with a "runtime error" and it would freeze untill he clicked ok on it, and it would then shut down loosing all his work that he didn't save.

So I got on the computer and opened Microsoft Word, and was able to duplicate the problem time after time but not every single time. When I simply open word, then click to close Word, the box appears, and he verified it is the same box he saw. It says exactly as follows, no more, no less, and every time reads the same -

Runtime Error!

So I tried to research it, and came across a fix on Microsoft's support site saying remove something called COM Add-ins. Just around two weeks ago or so, something that I assume I did has caused my PC to stop doing a number of things, such as ;
Recognizing recently used programs in the start menu
Allowing the locking and unlocking of the task bar
Saving the organization of files in the "Quick Launch" bar
Saving my decision to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from the control panel.
Saving default file associations and other such settings
~~~~~(Such as Firefox as my default browser, Winamp and VLC for all media files (Windows Media Player also goes through setup every time it launched when I forget to use "open with."))
Making folders and other things through the Right Click > New menus in folders and on the desktop
And a wide assortment of other problems that I either can't think of or am unaware of at this time.

I remember having a similar issue once in the past, and I was able to resolve it through a system restore from a time before the issue began. This time however, the earliest restore available was already after the problem began.

I'm not really sure where to begin with this issue. Most of my own little research attempts have lead it to being a registry issue, but I have no real justification for that of my own. Many solutions have pointed to the policies directory for Explorer, but I have no items in there to look at.

We are suddenly experiencing weird delays when we use the "receive" function in Outlook to download mail from our e-mail service provider. The mail leaves the service provider server immediately, but does not show up in the Outlook inbox for hours or even a day or two. It is just some of the mail; meanwhile, other mail comes through like normal. And the mail that is not coming through is from people who are on our approved senders list and with whom we've been exchanging mail regularly in the past.

Similarly, there is a shorter delay when using the "save-as" feature in Word. Before, the file showed up immediately in the directory it was being saved in. Now, there is a lag of a few minutes.

We are using Office 2007, and do not have an Exchange server. The mail comes directly into the desktop computer from the e-mail service provider. We tried running Office Diagnostics, but all it did was suggest we download any Office updates and apply them, which we did. It had no effect on the problems.

We have a hardware firewall (Linksys) and have the Windows software firewall disabled. Everything was working fine until a couple of weeks ago. And the percentage of messages that are being delayed is escalating.

Any idea what is causing this, and how to fix it?

I run a volunteer group and have been donated a number of XP-based PCs with Office 2007 suite. The machines have had little use and are all in good condition. I would like to configure the "save as" function in WORD and PowerPoint so that users can only save any file they have created to an external USB drive (thus preventing files being saved to the hard drives).
If this is not possible can Windows XP be configured so that any file saved to hard drive is deleted as soon as machine is switched off? This would certainly focus user's minds in the future!

To do the clean up at reboot one needs to get a third party program such as "DeepFreeze".

Most any program can NOT be set as default that a USB device to be set as the place for saving files.
What would you expect to happen if such a device was not found by the program.

OK...I think this could be a tough one.

I have MS Office 2007 installed on WinXP. However, as you know, the PowerPoint version is actually 2003. I have a PP 2007 presentation, with recorded narration, that I can open with PP 2003. However, when I try to "Save As" just a PowerPoint Presentation (2003) or PowerPoint Presentation 97-2003 & 95, it says "You are attempting to open a file type that is blocked by your registry policy setting."

Now...I've been Googling almost all day to find an answer. There are many suggestions about editing the registry, but the Key that is stated does not exist on my computer.

Does anyone have any thoughts at all?

Also, when I open the PP 2007 file in PP 2003, the narrations do not play...just another annoying thing!

I am working on with an old access database that i build last year. I need to work on the same data base but with current information. Is there any way that I can save the "2008" database as "2009"? I want to be able to keep the original "2008" file the way it is but i want the "2009" to be updated with this years info. I would like to just import a new excel spreadsheet into the "2008" database so I dont have to recreate all the reports and queries. Any suggestions?

My first question is why?
Why not just add the data to the current database?
You can sort out the Years in a Query.
There are various ways to what you want, first is to use the Tools>Database Utilities>Compact & Repair Database.

I have a user who is up to date with Windows updates (WinXP Pro). He is running Office 2003 as well. We have done the update and he still freezes up when trying to change the location to save to, when doing a save-as (word and excel). It also freezes when trying to attach something in Outlook. He has run Office sp2 as well.

I am stumped. Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Trying to reinstall Office 97 on a laptop where it is presently installed. Error message says "dos and windows programs cannot be installed on this computer". Separate problem; on this same computer, when saving Word documents, only the first letter of any file name is shown in the my document file

Thanks to several forum posts on these boards, I've been able to create a "Before Save" macro in word that enables me to run a macro when the user presses the save button.

In Module1 of the file

The macro I call basically saves the file in its location, but also in other locations (as an html file on a webserver, and as a docx file on a separate drive).

This works perfectly.

Is there a way to modify the VBA code so that it doesn't run on Autorecovery saves, or any solution that would prevent this error message from appearing?

I first noticed that these weird tmp. files were showing up like ~wrl3071.tmp the numbers in the file name varied. Next, when I "save as" a word doc, the file saves another copy with the first to characters of the filename being ~$ and another copy of the original will show up the the ~$ in place of the 2 first characters in the filename. If you try to open the ~$ file, a word file conversion text box opens and ask if you to select the code you want to convert from.. Japenese. I am a PC retard and luckily don't have many problems. I have ran Mcafee and Ad-aware and nothing seems to be a problem. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi All:
For over a year now I have had problems trying to save files in a different place to that suggested by Vista e.g. Vista might suggest saving a file to C:\User\Documents\ (say) but I want to save it to D:\Subject\File name. As soon as I enter the new location Word promptly crashes. (It will save to the original suggested location with no problem).
I thought that this was an MS Office 2003 problem and uninstalled MS Office and installed "Open Office" instead. However, exactly the same problem occurs, so it would seem to be down to Vista (Basic).

Anyone seen this one before?

I am using an Acer 5051 laptop, 2GHz uP, 2GB RAM, 60GB HDD, VISTA Basic OS.

I am using Office XP and am having issues with Word and Excel freezing and quiting whenever I try to save a Doc. Using the "save as" feature the box appears , I then go to the Save in: drop down box ad click the downward arrow. I'm getting the same error message in Word 2007 that I've seen a lot of your users write about. I either write a new document in Word 2007 or edit one from either 2003 or 2007. I can save the document with no problems for 5 or 6 times, sometimes getting all the way out of Word. On the 7th save, I get the following error message: "WORD CANNOT COMPLETE THE SAVE DUE TO A FILE PERMISSON ERROR." Then it lists the drive, folder, and exact file name in parentheses. When I click on OK in that message box, I sometimes get a subsequent error message that reads: "Check the drive to make sure the door is closed and it contains the correct disk or CD." Then I click on OK, and Word not only DOES NOT SAVE my document, but it also DELETES the earlier version from the drive where I've saved it. I don't know if it's important, but the drive on which I save everything I want to keep is a flash drive. My husband just told me, "Save the document to your hard drive. If it works, this indicates that you may have a bad flash drive." I tried that, and the document did save to my hard drive. I really don't believe, however, that the flash drives are the problem: yesterday (March 1, 2009) was the first day I have ever had this kind of problem, and I've been using Office/Word 2007 for a couple of months now. It blows my mind (small explosion, I admit) that Microsoft Edge didn't come with a "Save As" feature when downloading something from the internet allowing us to change the name of the file as well as the location in which it is being saved. And I was hoping that with updates it would be added. However, I still don't see the feature, even after this November update.

Does anyone know if this will ever be added? I have been using Edge since it came out, but if this kind of boneheadedness continues, I will be switching back to IE.

I'm a network admin for about 30 users. About 10 of them are having a problem with any new document in Word (both XP and 2003). A small hollow square appears in the upper left corner. They're unable to delete it, and it freezes the "File" button on the Menu bar. Sometimes it freezes Word totally. They are able to print existing documents opened in Explorer. Very annoying! Any thoughts?

I help a blind lady with her computer and she uses a system called Jaws with a braille reader. We've just realised that on the screen in the toolbar it claims that the font in use is Arial but when she goes into Tools and Fonts it claims that the font in use is Helvetica! Now she can't see what on the toolbar but she wants Arial not Helvetica. In fonts, if you change to Arial and click Default etc it still reverts back to Helvetica.

I've deleted with no benefit.

Any ideas??

Yup. What it is doing is not wrong, just not what you are expecting.

What is happening is that you are requesting a font that is not in the current font set, and Windows is substituting the closest match it can find.
The font set in Jaws or the braille converter is probably gathered from Linux or a none Windows source, and Arial is not in that font set.
Arial is almost exclusive to Microsoft and was developed in 1982 from Helvetica, which is far older and more universal. Quite why MS did this is anyone's guess! Tahoma (MS-Sans or Verdana) is another one that is used in Outlook particularly.
There are quite likely other font faces that are similarly substituted.
You might like to see if Jaws has an updated font set specifically for Windows.

Hi everyone, irritating problem is bugging a friend.

In Word 2003 sometimes the colors used when tracking changes by author seem to be random. The default would seem to be Red, Blue, and so on, but he seems to get a sludgy orange and then gray as the next color, which makes it harder to spot changes in long documents as they don't stand out as much. I can send him a document I've created with tracked changes in red, and they come out as another color on his PC. Have tried forcing all changes to be a particular color (e.g. red) and then resetting ... with limited success.

Does anyone know if this is a bug or if there is a workaround? This site suggests the former when it says that Word "likes to be creative"!!!

My dad was recently doing some work on this computer and he REALLY changed the settings in Word around. I was able to get most of them back to how I like it, except one.

When I highlight text and click "delete" to erase it or highlight it and start typing to replace it... it doesn't work. It's like some "text protector" where it doesn't delete it.

How do I fix it back to the original way? (I remember this happening once before).

My wife is running into an error with Word 2000 whenever she attempts to save a certain type of document.

She is created data graphs in Excel and then copying and pasting them into a word document along with text, analysis, etc.

When she goes to save the file to the C: drive, she gets an error saying the disk is full. Meanwhile there are many GBs of space available on the C: drive still. Also, this does not happen when attempting to save a regular Word doc or the Excel doc the graphs have been generated in. Only when trying to save the Word doc with the Excel graphs pasted into it.

Any tips on what may be causing this and how I might be able to fix it? She's working on applying for an important grant and this is obviously hindering her progress,

I have MS Word 2003 sp3 working on Windows XP sp3, and when opening a document based in a template with some macros, MS Word return an error: "Could not open 'http://**********/*****.dot' ".
The path given on the error description does not exist, but the template does exist in my template directory "D:\MSWord\Templates" and this path is configured in "file locations" of the Word options in "User templates" and in "Workgroup templates".
Ivan so, after selecting 'OK' in the error window, word could effectively open the document?
Someone Know why this happens and how can I avoid this boring error window all the times the document is opened.

I am a novice, but with some experience in Word, plus had help from a professional. So we downloaded and intalled the keyboard and complex script and right-to-left languages as described here We restarted when promted. Opened a Word doc, set the language and font to Arabic transparent, but it keeps switching back to Arial or New Times Roman as soon as I type. I can open Arabic documents without any problem and I can cut & paste and it all appears as it should on the page, justified to the right, etc.

Can someone please help? Thanks a million!

Oh - and I installed it on my other computer which also runs XP, but it's Office 2007. It didn't have any problems.

I'm trying to find out when I first started editing a file.

This file was first copied from an existing file to serve as a template. In properties/details, "content created" has a date next to it.

Q.1. Is this the date I created the file, or would it be the date I first edited the file?

Q.2. If the latter, and if the first edit was simply to change the title on the first page before I began editing some months later, is there a way I can trace when and what I edited?

There is a way to turn on versioning in 2003, Your looking for something like 'save version on close". In 2010 you get 'Always create backup copy'. Probably because the save version on close created a bloated document.

Go to Tools>Options. There a window with a number of tabs should be displayed. One of the tabs should be labeled "File Locations". Click that tab, and you will see where your documents are stored by default. You should be able to change it there.

I have a Dell Precision M60 workstation, and currently use XP Pro SP2.

I replaced my hardrive earlier this year. After reinstalling all the software and updating everything, my computer ran very slow, and would freeze without an error message when using any office program.

I have contacted dell about this. They checked out my computer remotely and said everything was OK. Then they tried to run "detect and repair" for Office 2003. It took about 15 minutes to configure, then we got an error. The tech told me all he could recommend is to reinstall office. So I did. Same problem happening, and same error when I try to run detect and repair.

I don't know what to do next! Any suggestions? Thanks

I have a nested "IF" statement that inlcudes the "OR" function because I have more than 7 logical tests. One of the logical tests looks for two fields to be true in order to return the "value if true". If either or both fields are false, then the "value if false" is returned, in this case zero. When the value of the first field is correct, but the value of the second field is not correct, zero is returned, which is the "value if false" and a correct return.

However, when both fields are false, the formula is returning the word "FALSE" instead of zero.

The attached file shows these returns and the formulas. Cells F2-7 are corrrect returns (highlighted in green), while cells F8-11 are not correct returns (highlighted in red).

Any ideas on how to return the "value if false" (zero) in cells F8-11 would be appreciated.

Has any other business gotten this? We got a letter from Microsoft corperation that their Office 2003 suite contained 3rd party code and they require for us to stay licensed and compliant that all installs have to be upgraded to SP 2 and then to SP 3 when it gets released...

It does not go into specifics but is on Microsoft company paper and is addressed from them so I am not thinking this to be some kind of HOAX... but I can't find anything mentioned online about it at all on the internet.

Has anyone else seen this does anyone have a link to the story as to who the third party and why they are sending out this letter and what was infringed upon enough to require a mailing to customers? (PS I only spent about 5 mins looking for it under search terms like Office 2003 service pack 3rd party code.)

When started, the Word program gives a message "preparing to install" but takes one full minute and then a message "an error occured...". But when I click ok, Word opens and works fairly well. My operating system is Vista and I have been using Microsoft office 2007 “Document Imaging” for OCR and passing the text to Word. Recently it has been exhibiting strange behavior.

When I try to send the text to Word (“Send text to Word&#8221, “Document Imagining” gives an error message:
“Server Busy. This action cannot be completed because the ‘document 1 - Microsoft Word’ program is not responding. …”. However, an empty Word document window appears anyway.

When I minimize the empty Word document window, a small dialog box appears asking me “Do you want to convert from
[list of file formats] to Word?” If I select HTML, the text appears in Word.
Sometimes the Word/”Document Imaging” programs hang up completely, in which case I have to go to “Task Manager” to get out of the predicament.

I have uninstalled and re-installed “Microsoft Office 2007” with no success in solving the problem. However, if I I implement "Document Imaging" on a different computer (also with Vista), everything works as expected.

Can anyone tell me what is going on? How can I go directly to Word instead of having to convert from HTML? How did it get to HTML in the first place?

Program hangs, when i try to open or save as a file In "excel-2003" and "corel draw9" and "WILCOM Es9"
and in task manager it shows ?not responding?
But when i try to open it by clicking on the file using windows explorer it works quite well.
Earlier i used same programes on the "865glc" and "2.4" there was no problem,
I have also tried many Intel computers to trace the problem

XP Home (installed SP2 recently, which MIGHT have something to do with this?).

Just saved two word docs and a bmp file, all separately. All three times I saw that a new location has been added to the Save As drop-down menu. It didn't open to My Documents folder but was in the general folder list of the whole computer. The location was called "FTP File Locations." It's never appeared on the Save As menu before. This made me think of the file/print sharing control, which is now located in the Windows Firewall, but I don't use that Firewall, I turned it off to use Norton. What was FTP Locations? And is there any way to disable file/print sharing without using the Windows Firewall? (These may be the same thing, I don't know.) Also, in Network Connections, I thought I'd find file/print sharing control there, but now XP wants me to run a whole Network Wizard thing..I'm afraid I'll somehow set up a network instead! or enable all kinds of things..I don't want to create a disaster here.

(My son installed an FTP program months ago for work he was doing, but the program was removed. I just searched for it, it's definitely gone.)

This is a stand-alone, non-networked home computer.

P.S. I saved another Word doc and now it's back to opening to My Documents folder as I can't find the FTP Locations anywhere.

I'm getting this error when I try to upload my resume on to a website and so I'm unable to do any uploading:

I've had this error before and last time I deleted a windows update (can't remember what) but I'm afraid that it might have came back (blame it on the wife ). Anyways this error is linked to Norton which I don't use (using Avast).

using windows 7 (x64), office 2007, reproduces on all browsers. No processes that deal with office is running.

Alright so I followed all the steps on this article: How to open a Works 6.0, a Works 7.0, a Works 8.0, or a Works 9.0 word processing document in Word to install the Micorsoft Works file converter. This allows you to open MS Works files in MS Word. I installed both the MS Works 6-9 converter AND MS Works 4 converter. However with both installations I still haven't been able to to open MS Works files in MS Word 2013. When I open the files I get the following error:

I was working on Microsoft Word 7 and had multiple documents open; the computer froze (from being overworked, I guess) and I turned it off doing the "hold the power button for five seconds" thing. When I started up my computer again and opened up Word 7, I was able to recover most of the documents I was working on, except one. That one will not open (the message that appears says that the file can't be found), nor am I able to delete it (the message is that the file can't be deleted because it's corrupted or unreadable).

What can I do to fix this? I want to delete it; how may I do that? Please and thanks for the help. I don't speack tech, so the official support help from Microsoft Office confused me a little.

After I open Microsoft Word, and then go to "Insert" and "Picture...from File", and then go to My Documents, as soon as the cursor moves anywhere after opening My Documents, the computer freezes.

I uninstalled Office, and re-installed, and still have the same problem.

Hello, everyone. I'm new to the forum and having troubles using the "Columns" feature in Word. I've created a table using "Columns" with 4 columns of information on the first half of my Word document. For the last half of my document which is on the same page as my 4-column table, I need to switch back to one column so I can write a paragraph. However, when I switch back from 4 to 1 column, all of my info. in my 4-column table screws up. I've tried several options on the "Columns" feature and everytime my table screws up. Can anyone help? I have some old files transferred from a previous computer that say they are "Microsoft Works Word Processor" files. I have a version of Works on my current machine, but its word processor element appears to be Word. Word does not like these files. I am pretty sure that I have tried to OpenOffice them as well.

Any ideas of a free prog that will read these or, even better, convert them to a more standard format?

Recently, I'm playing Anno 1404 (also called Dawn of Discovery) in my Vista Home Basic 32bit finely until I saw the problem with the "save/load" problem. First, it saves "systematically" but, the save is corrupted to a 5kb file. Second, the game can't load the 'properlly saved' save file, and also the corrupted one also.

Few of the players had the similar problem, and someone said that making another user account works, and I tried and really worked for me. Yes, I can play this way, but all of my files and infos are saved in the Administrator account, and I don't want to switch users just to play that game

Recently I found a useful MS program, which is runas, and found how to run as another account. It asks for the account pw, and everythis was fine, but it doesn't run my game
It just closes the cmd and nothing happens. What could be this problem?
I hope Ubi gives out this fixing patch fast

In any application under Win XP, when I use a Save As or Open dialog box, and click the down arrow next to the location box to search for the folder I want, the application never responds. Usually, I have to click the arrow a couple of times and then it sort of wakes up and responds, or the application crashes (the title bar of the dialog box will say "Not Responding".

Often, in the case of the Save As dialog, it won't say Save As in the upper left corner, only an "S" will appear there.

Seems like a memory issue or else something corrupt in the system. Before I shell out $35 to MS to have them fix something that shouldn't be broken, can anyone help???

I just got a new Hewlett Packard computer with Windows XP. The CD drive is a combo CD reader, writer and DVD. The main reason I need it is to backup my many documents, database programs (RootsMagic family history, Quicken, etc.), photographs and drawings. The pre-installed burning program on the computer is Adaptec's (I think) Sonic RecordNow!, which is useless for my needs because of the way it works. The HP tech suggested I download DLA to enable me to use "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, but I haven't had much luck with that, either. What I need is to be able to use a CD-RW as a giant floppy - to add, delete, copy, edit and move files, just as I do on my regular floppies, using "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, or "save as...". I have a chart in an Excel spreadsheet, and it has several "series" in it. Some of the series are charted as "lines", and some are "areas" that fill in the entire background of anything from 0 to the value I have entered.

I have one particular series that is showing up as an "area" but I want it to be drawn as a "line" instead, so it DOESN'T fill in the area below it. I currently have the "background" as "none", but now I have a line from the last value down to "0", and that's what I want to avoid...

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

Does it show in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the drive...right clik it and select Properties.

I am running Windows 7, 64 bit.

This is the problem. When searching a folder, I am looking for all .cfg files. I can see at least 4 .cfg files in the folder, however, when I search *.cfg, it comes up with no results. I know this is not an error in Windows, and I feel as if I am overlooking something simple.

I see that .cfg files are tagged as "configuration" files and I assume Windows is trying to protect me. In reality, in this specific folder, these are broken files/un-completed download files from my download manager, Gigaget. I just want to remove these files in a specifc folder I have set up to house incoming downloads, so there's no risk of deleting anything important that my system would need.

Does anyone know how to rectify this dilemma.

I'm creating something that I need a nested function to return to a cell a zone to a map page that is entered. The operator enters a map page in one cell and a different cell displays a specific zone. When I create the formula for the various map pages using "OR" qualifiers one at a time, I overload excel and it says I have too many arguments. I'd like to be able to use a combination of "OR" qualifiers and "AND" qualifiers to enter the various map pages--like this....

If map page 433, 434, 453-460 are input, then "west side" would come out in a different cell.

I've done this:

I can break it up and get the pieces to work independently but not together. if you can help I'd appreciate it.

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm using Outlook 2003. I'm designing a new Contacts screen, which better suits the needs of my business.

I have been able to figure out how to everything except for this:

How to I design the "date" and "dollar amount" field values to default to blank/empty instead of defaulting to the word "None" in the case of the "date" field and "$0.00" in the case of the "dollar amount" field?

my boss only know how to use google chrome, and he usually save websites in his own document library, and he always use "right click mouse > save as" to open his own document library directory, and sometimes he will save some pdf, but when he tries to open an pdf file through google chrome with right click > save as, he can only see file with html extension. any one can help to add "all files" in the drop-down menu next to "Save as type" in google chrome, so he can see all files types when he right click > save as through the google chrome browser.

About one month ago, a new problem surfaced:

Most times when I try to "Save As" a document and the application calls Windows Explorer for me to Browse where to save the file, it hangs for upwards of 60 seconds. The Browse window appears, but then I get a "spinning circular cursor" for 45-60 seconds until I can do anything. This occurs in all applications from MSExcel through Internet Explorer.

The system never completely crashes, but there is always this 60 second lag now.

The lag also occurs when I try to open a document...and to a less extent, but sometimes, when I simply open Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer is inconsistent as to whether it will give me a lag...sometimes it does work fine).

I have previously tried posting in the malware forum. I had picked something up they found...and cleaned it out, but that seems to have been completely unrelated to this as it was a virus redirecting my Google searches.

Can anyone help?

Hi everyone, this morning I turned on the PC to do the usual stuff but I could not connect to my internet with the error "Unidentified Network - Limited". After trying to troubleshoot my ethernet I get the error "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration". After troubleshooting didn't work I took to the web. I literally tried every solution I found... to no avail. This brings me to extra frustration since I only built my PC last thursday.

This is a question for information about why my networking problem finally was resolved.
I have four PC?s on my network; one Windows 7 and three Windows XP. The Windows 7 PC always sees all three of the other computers. However the Windows XP computers sometimes don?t see the other XP computers when I press ?My Network Places.? Quite by accident I discovered that if I press ?View Workgroup Computers? then ALL the other PC?s in the network DO show up. Furthermore, if I click through "View Workgroup Computers" and access/edit a file on one of the other computers, then this computer will ALSO show up in ?My Network Places.? This behavior seems to be quite consistent and works every time I have tried it. Apparently, this is a workaround to the long vexing problem of why my networked PC?s sometimes don?t show up under ?My Network Places.?

My question: why does ?View Workgroup Computers? apparently always show all the networked PC?s, when ?My Network Places? does so only intermittently or sometimes not at all?

Welcome to Seven Forums bobbot11. Help us understand. When you 1st open IE, it opens to a blank page instead of your home page? Or is opening new tabs that open a blank tab? Or is opening a new window that opens a blank window?

If IE is opening to a blank page instead of a home page you have set, try re-registering IE.

Download the IE Restorator, and choose Re-register 32 bit IE in (whichever version your OS is) W7
