I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer.  I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.

I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel.  However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish.  I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.

I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC.  However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).

I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem.  I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... My computer was recently "wiped" and now I do not have Word, Office Works and much more... Since my computer came with these programs, I don't have any discs to install them. Is there a place I can go online to reinstall these programs for free.

A:Lost Word, office works and more

These programs are sometimes "bundled" with a new PC (at extra cost) but are not free to download. In fact they are not legitimately available for download, free or not.

You need to contact the supplier of your PC, if the programs were legitimately sold with the PC, they should have supplied disks.

Hello to all the wonderful computer literate people out there. Got a Doozie for you ! I am working off of XP. I have Microsoft Works & Money 2002. I have tried and tried and tried again to no avail trying to attach my resume to my email. but when i do, they cannot open it. So I do my resume on the untitled document and "save as" file type Word 97.doc. and attach it. They can open it but the structure of the resume is all out of wack. They ask me to send it on Word. I got a copy of MS Word '97 from a friend and went to install it to my computer and got the following message:

* 16 bit DLL Error
Windows system 32 autoexe.NT
The Subsystem file is not suitable for running Ms-Dos and Windows applications. Choose to terminate the application.

now everytime i try to install anything, like reinstalling my HP scanner, i get the same error and it wont let me install.
Could someone please explain to me what is happening to my puter.. please speak in lamest terms, i am not a genious with this thing, if it was up to me, my HP would be in the backyard and get the 10 buckshot salute!

I had to do a complete wipe and restore. I thought I was doing it right by having a solid backup (Norton Ghost). After completing the reinstallation of my software, I went to my backup to restore my calendar data from microsoft Works 7 which is very important to me. I cannot seem to find the data. Restoring Microsoft works 7 Doesn't populate the data that was in my calendar. I tried to restore selected items from C:/program files/common files, and the files from Microsoft shared with no luck. My computer prior to the restore was a real mess, so I do not want to restore a lot of corrupt files. Does anyone know where the data is stored?

A:Microsoft Works 7 Calendar Lost Data

From what I have read, mswkscal.wcd file is the calendar data file; I think it may be kept in a hidden folder, so be sure to do your search for it accordingly.

When I put the floppy in my machine I received this message " Works cannot open the file because the file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt." The computer I copied the file from is running windows XP. The computer I tried to open the file on is running Windows me. The windows me computer does have microsoft works word processor installed on it . So It should be able to open the program. Both computers were purchased within a year and a half so programs should be compatible. I have tried opening the file with Word but that doesn't work either. Any suggestions? I suspect DEP isnt turned off or it wouldn't be able to "shut down word". You can however, simply add word to DEP's exception list and it will ignore it.

Hi

I've got Word at work and the Windows XP(home edition) Works word processor at home -- but they don't seem to be compatiable when I bring a disk home with a Word file.

Any tips?

A:Microsoft Works and Word -- compatible??

In Word 2000, there's a Save As Works 2000 option. If your file is anything other than very basic, you'll be prompted that "some features may be lost". I just tried it with a Word doc containing a table (Works WP files doesn't do tables), sure enough it came out pretty screwed.

You could always download OpenOffice for use at home -- it opened the file (Word version) no problem.

I bought my computer in 2008ish, maybe 2009, and it came with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It also came with pre-installed software, and of those pre-installed software included Microsoft Works Word Processor. I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit last week, and I have been painstakingly installing my programs back after I messed up the installation. First, I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, then I realized I put in the wrong disc so I then put in Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, then I upgraded to Ultimate 64-bit. All my programs got messed up in the process and I basically have a clean install of Windows 7 with a Windows.old folder containing my programs in a folder, which all need to be re-installed. I can see my Microsoft Works Word Processor, but it won't let me run the installation on it. I tried running it in compatibility modes for every available option, but nothing works. I also ran it as an administrator. How can I legally re-install these programs I purchased? I have tons and tons of .wps files that I want to be able to open with a program I purchased with my computer. Yes, I have heard of OpenOffice and it does not support .wps files. I do have Microsoft Office Professional 2013 installed, but it can't seem to open .wps files (unless I'm wrong).

A:Microsoft Works Word Processor

Microsoft Office 2013 is capable of opening Works 6-9 documents in a Compatibility mode.

To do that in Word 2013 you need to go File - Open - Computer - Browse.
In Open window you have to select a filter:
All files (*.*) or Works 6 - 9 Document (*.wps)

The program first choice in the "save as" menu is .wps which is unreadable to many she has to submit documents to and also takes up much more space. Is there any way I can change the defaults or just make the .rtf the first choice in her choices of saving files?

When I went back to get I got this message:"In order to open this file Works needs to use a file converter, which may pose a security risk if the file you are opening is a malicious file. Choose OK to open this file if you are sure it is from a trusted trusted source."

When I click OK I get this:"Works cannot open (file name). The file may be in use by another application, the format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt." and then receive a blank page.

Does anyone know what this is and how I can get my doc. back. This is happening with a few docs. but not all.

Thank You

Please consider this only a suggestion as I am not sure I understand the program problem you

are having, . . as I am only familiar with word pad, etc.

but open a new file of the word processor and click save and then check the drop down under
the title window and check the options you have to save as, is it possible that an optional choice may be what you need to do ?

Are you able to find the documents that you are not able to open ?

Hi Everyone,I did a quick search of the forums and didn't come up with anything similar to the problem I've just started having with MS Word.I'll be working on a document and saving my work every so often. Then all of a sudden Windows starts telling me that it can't save the file. I goofed and didn't think quick enough to get a screen shot of that message. However, I was able to copy past everything, from the document I was trying to save, to a new document, which is what I did as I had already had the same thing happen to me a couple of times before. Then when I clicked 'Yes' I get "This" message.OK, so then I click 'No on exit to close the document and got "This" asking if I wanted to save the changes to the document. Then I Just click No because that's the only option that will let me close that application. Then when I try to open it again I get "This" dreaded message.Have any of you guys ever run into anything like this before? It doesn't seem to matter if the document only has ten pages or if it has one hundred ten pages. Nor does it seem to matter if I have a lot of images in it or none at allI am at a loss as to what to do to prevent this form happening in the future. At least I have a work around that I can use so as not to lose my entire document..., but this is still just a bit nerve wercking. Thanks for any help or advice guys.Wendy

Hi,

I am in Works 7.0, and have installed PictureIt, Encarta, Money and MS Word 2002. I can launch all of these programs from the MS Works Launcher, with the exception of MS Word. When I try to launch MS Word, I get the following error :

"The Works Launcher cannot access the task you selected. Files needed to start the program may be missing, corrupted, or may have been deleted. " (etc.)

There is not much help online for this, and what there is seems to refer back to issues with Norton Anti-virus. Problem there is that I don't have Norton installed on my PC.

I am running this under Windows 7, and have tried "run as administrator", as well as running it in XP SP3 compatibility mode.

Any help appreciated.

I reset the Microsoft Works Word Processor to default with a different font size. It worked fine. Then, while setting up a printing for envelopes, I tried to reset that as a default as well. Big mistake. Now when I open the word processor program it comes up as the envelope function and I cannot get the original page for letter writing back. Microsoft was no help when I accessed their web page (too far over my head in their explanations as well as being not too user-friendly for my level of understanding). Does anyone know how I can get it open the right way again? I use Window's Vista on an Acer Extensa 5620. Thanks.

A:Solved: Microsoft Works Word Processor

This only applies for the Works word processor, the common one in Works NOT spelled with a capital W, as in Word.

First, only do this with the Work word processor not going.
If you really only want one default word processing template in Works (and it sounds like you do), and if you have no other templates that you want (and it sounds like you don't) then you can just delete all templates in this folder:
C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\Template\
Then, just start up the word processor and see if it is fixed.

If that is not the case, just let me know and I will adjust and tell you what else you can do, instead.

My system is Windows XP and I feel my computer user level is just basic. I have lost all the history in my Microsoft Works(7.0) Word Processor. (no clue how it got lost)When I go to My Documents I can see all the files from history but I cannot open any of them. When I try to open a file it directs me to buy Word Perfect(R) 11 software with an upgrade to Word Perfect 12 for $99.00. Should I buy the software? Is there a way to move the files back into the Word Processor history? Next to each file in My Documents it says WPEntrust Signed Document.

A:Microsoft Works Word Processor History

MS Works has nothing to do with Word Perfect! MS Works is related to MS Office. If you are looking for your documents, have you tried launching Works and going to File/Open to see what is there? Perhaps you had a trial version of Word Perfect in your computer, too. If you like the word processor in Works, perhaps you should upgrade to Word 2007 instead -- Word is a much larger, more diversified program than the abbreviated version in Works.

Hi

For some reason I can no longer open Microsoft Works Word Processor or any of the files I created using this programme. When I try to do so I get the following error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

I uninstalled the programme and then re-installed it subsequently but still have the same problem. All other programmes in the suite such as Microsoft Calender, Database, Spreadsheet etc. are all opening OK.

If anyone can throw some light on this issue I would be most grateful.

Hello, I'm not very good with computers so bare with me please

I am a university student and today when I went to open my class notes in Microsoft Works Word Processor I found nothing but a blank page. The file was still there, with the exact same name, but all the text was gone. The document contained 15 hours of lecture notes needed for an exam in 6 days, so I'm naturally pretty anxious for help. I have since turned my computer on and off. I have tried converting the file to rich text format and back, to no avail. The size of the document says a mere 16 kb now as well.

I opened the seemingly blank document with notepad, and found a bunch of jargon along with 2 interesting clues. One was very small pieces of my class notes here and there, in between the coding and jargon. The second was towards the end of the coding, where it said various random things about my HP printer. I did perform a printer test today, and was wondering if that did anything to delete or corrupt my notes.

I performed a system reset back to 5 PM (the file appeared blank at 6 PM, when it said it was last modified). The file is still blank. I have also checked through the recycle bin, nothing. I've got Windows Vista, and my computer is a Gateway Notebook, 5 months old.

These notes are very important to me and my grade in this class. I have backed up material from 3 weeks ago, but with 3 hour classes i would still be missing a lot of material >_<. Any help is much appreciated, than... Read more

Hello,I've been having this problem with Microsoft Works Word Processor for as long as I can remember. I'm finally hoping to get an answer as to why it happens and how to fix it.Every time I copy something, for example, a passage from an email I typed, and then try to paste it into a new word document, this is the message that pops up:If I try to do it again, the process just repeats itself. Why is this happening, and how can I fix it?Thanks so much!MicheleEdited to add:I've never been notified of a solution as the message states will happen if one is found, and, as I mentioned, this has been a problem for well over a year.Merged topics ~ Hamluis.

A:Microsoft Works Word Processor Problem

Hello,This is another problem that I've been having with Microsoft Works Word Processor. I tried to get help with this a long time ago, but it was never really resolved, from what I remember. For some reason, whenever I try to open a document that has previously been saved, reopened at a later date, and re-saved, I get this message every time I open it again. I just end up hitting save again and replacing the original copy with the new copy even though they are exactly the same. Previously, a "helper" on Bleeping Computer told me they thought it was happening because my computer was shutting down on it's own, but this is not always the case. Anyway, here's the message:Thanks,Michele

Hi there guys.
Okay so here's the issue.
I have an HP Pavillion a813w that had Microsoft Works pre-installed on my computer.

Now, I just did a roll back, totally reformated my computer on April 10th to total factory settings once more, so my computer is relatively unbuggy, or so I thought.
However, when I was sent a document from a friend today via AIM, and I scanned it with my virus scanner, it was clean. It had me say yes, I agree to the EULA, and then as it was loading up, it just seemed to disappear, I couldn't open up the document, and I have tried rebooting, and restoring both and it would do nothing.

I'm wondering if there's a reason for this..

I'm trying to figure this out, first time I've ever had Works do this, before I reformated that is.

Hello. I have Microsoft Works Word Processor.
I have a Vista operating system.

When I open up a word document to type,
I want it always to open with another font and size,
not the current one. (times new roman).

It is hassle to change this everytime, and then it goes back to times new roman whenever it wants.

I cannot find out how to do this.
I cannot even find a "preferences" in case that would work.
Any suggestions?

A:Error Message while running Microsoft Word and Works

First, are you running Word or Works when you get this message. I mean, do you get into Works at all or you get into Works, choose the Word processor and that's when you get the error...

If you like, you can try the "global" fix. Go to www.piersontech.com/07-CleanHardDrive.htm
and follow the instructions to clean up your hard drive. And then, of course, if that doesn't work, come on back in here and let us know what version of works you're using. If you can't figure out how to tell, find the file called msworks.exe on your hard drive, right-click the file name and hit Properties. The version is under there.

I have a Study Guide with questions in Microsoft Works Word Processor and I wanted to fill in the answers in a different font and color. But every time I click the question I want to answer, it automatically changes to the font and color of the question. So I have to type the answers and then highlight it and change the font and color manually. I have a ton of questions to answer and it is getting to be really time consuming to have to go back and change them all manually. Is there a way to set the font and color to be locked and never change even if I click a word or line that has a different font and color?

Just like Word, each area can have its own font and other settings.

You are going to have to put up with this, as the author did not set up the study guide to be used in this manner.

Hello. Something is wrong with the footnotes feature on my Microsoft Works 8.5, on my computer that uses Windows Vista. The document in question is single-spaced, justified, and has standard (default) margins. The problem is that I have inserted a footnote but, since I do not want to reduce its font size any further, its length is such that it carries over to the subsequent page.. this is fine, except that when the footnote carries over like this, then the main text on the second page does not go all the way to the bottom like it should. Or in other words, on the second page where the footnote carries over, at the absolute bottom of the page there is the continuation of the footnote, but then above that there is an empty gap, the size of about six lines of text (at size 12 Palatino Linotype), and then only above this gap is the rest of the main text. I cannot seem to do anything with this strange gap, so naturally I assume it is a bug in the program.

Any assistance would be much appreciated (I have searched this site and Google to no avail).

A:footnote in Microsoft Works 8.5 (on Vista) leaves gap when carries over to next page

Have you gone into page setup and adjusted the bottom margin of your document as well as the footer.
Adjust down to say 0.1 and when ut says that the margins are outside the print area just click on th no button.

The problem that you have as i see it, is that you have a footer margin as well as a footnote space.

Hope that helps.

Look in the recycle bin in case they were accidentally deleted. If they aren't there, go to Start>>Find>>Files Or Folders and look for print.doc in C:\ and do the same with the other file. If its not there its gone for good. Also open MS word and at the bottom File Menu there is a list of recently opened documents and you can look for it there.

Im a bit confused in the use of the page layout view in Microsoft Word. I have correctly set the paper size to letter(8.5"*11"), but when I place a piece of paper on my monitor the size and dimensions of the paper do not match the screen at 100% zoom. the paper on screen is much larger than the real paper. And if I choose less zoom (90%) to match the width of the real paper to the one on screen, the paper on screen is a bit longer than the real paper.

A:page size in Microsoft Word

The sizes are not meant to match up.

Actually, Windows doesn't even have the facilities to take monitor size into account automatically. You can set the dpi manually to a custom value, but that will break many apps that depend on the WIndows default of 96.

My Microsoft Word is gone. I tried to update it and was told that there was nothing to update. Since I also have Works, I thought it would be okay, because I could use Works to write my letters, but when I went there and clicked on letter, it would only pull up labels and business cards. I have lost a Microsoft Word feature (Microsoft Office XP Professional with Front Page) from my computer and I do not have the relevant disc here to restore it. What is coming up is "Error 1706 - C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office10/1033/SETUP.HLP".

I have done several things that might have caused this part of my program to become lost. I set up some limited user accounts. I also used Tweak XP Pro and removed what were listed as unnecessary files, having read that these could easily be restored from the Recycle Bin if necessary. I then... ouch, dumb.... unthinkingly emptied the Recycle Bin.

I have tried System Restore on XP. I did a Registry Restore on Advanced Installer Pro (which was the program with which I emptied the Recycle Bin). I also removed Tweak XP Pro, which was supposed to restore the system to the same state it was in before the installation. None of these have worked. I really need to get back whatever is lost, preferably without having to access the relevant disc which I do not have with me.

I am using a laptop with Windows XP SP2. Would a program like File-Saver get back this feature? What else can I do? I need a simple solution!

I would sure appreciate help if you know the solution to this issue.

Regards, Cheryl

Hello Cheryl & Welcome to the forums.I am afraid you will need to do a repair install of MS Office. In order to do this you will need the install CD.Go to Add & Remove Programs and click on MS Office then click Remove and you will see the option to Repair, you will be instructed to put the CD in the Rom Drive. This is the only option I can see, maybe someone will have a better way, without the need for the CD and will chime in.I also used Tweak XP Pro and removed what were listed as unnecessary files, having read that these could easily be restored from the Recycle Bin if necessary. So I am officially desperate! I worked on a project in Microsoft Word 2007. I then went to go open it the next day and all of the text was completely gone!! I am only a beginner when it comes to computers so I have absolutely no idea what happened.
To better understand the problem here were the chain of events:
I worked on 2 documents, saved them in a folder, and then closed MSWord
I then worked on them the next day not realizing that for some reason they were opened as "Read Only"
Seeing that, I copied the the text and saved them in new documents
I went to Documents and attempted to move the new documents into the folder with the originals but an error message reading something like "this action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program" when the file was NOT open
In my frustration I attempted to move it over and over again to no avail
I gave up and closed the Documents folder and turned off my computer
The very next day I went to open the project and both the original documents and the copied ones were COMPLETELY EMPTY!!!
the files were still there but the all of text was completely gone!
Through Microsoft forums I've repeatedly tried the "Recover Text from any File" and "Open and Repair" methods
They've remained completely empty
I don't think I can redo the project correctly in the time it is due! Please any info will help. Thanks

I was editing a very large document in Microsoft Word and somehow wasn't able to save it and it disappeared leaving in it's place a file called ~WRL3892TMP. I can't open it as it says file not found and clicking on properties tab shows that it's a hidden file. I'm going to tell the whole story incase the answer is somewhere lost in one of the steps I took. I'm writing a paper for school and it needs to be on Word 2007. I have two accesses to this type of Microsoft Word. At my boyfriend's house and at school. I started it at my boyfriends house and didn't have my flash drive, so I e-mailed it as an attatchment to my yahoo e-mail. When I was at school, I opened it and worked on it again. I saved it. Later still at school, I opened it, worked on it again and saved it. As I was saving it I realized that the one I had originally opened from my boyfriend's house was the file extention .docx and the file extention my school uses, even though they both are Microsoft Word 2007, was .doc. So I saved it twice just incase one file wouldn't open. When I got to my boyfriends house, I opened the .doc file. It came up and I finished my paper. Throughout working on it, I randomly and continually clicked the "save" button. Not the "save as". When I was finally finished, I went to upload it onto the internet to turn it in like I always do, and I couldn't find it. I of course closed the program before I realized I couldn't find it, so I couldn't try to resave it as something else. I know I saved it more than once. I looked everywhere I can possibly think of!! I also often get the error that my HP driver is bad, but I have uninstalled and reinstalled this many many times (each time with a fresh driver download from HP).

Can anyone help me with this issue? It happens at the most exasperating times!

I am having troubling with page numbering.

I have a large document that has Annexes A and B. These are both new sections and I have the numbering starting at page 1. I have formatted the numbering and put it in the footer. The format is as follows:

A-1 of 10

The "1" is automatically generated with the {PAGE} code and the "A" and the "10" are entered manually. Therefore, if the Annex A grows or shrinks, I must change the "10" manually.

So I have two problems. I must change the total number of pages in the section manually and the other problem has to do with the Table of Contents.

When the TOC is generated, it does not see the "A" and thus numbers the pages 1,2,3, ...etc. I have to manually enter "A-" before each page number.

Any solutions to these problems would be appreciated.

A:Microsoft Word 2000 Page Numbering...egads!

Therefore, if the Annex A grows or shrinks, I must change the "10" manually.

Instead of typing the 10, Insert-Field, Document numbering, and choose SecPages (section pages).

I have to manually enter "A-" before each page number.

That is correct unless you make the A part of a numbering format in the heading style that you're using for your TOC. Also, when you insert the page number, you must format it to "include chapter number".

The whole setup of a doc with Appendices just sucks. Sorry.

Hello. This works up to Office 2003. But you may try it.

I lost a really important Word file that I opened by a webmail on IE7 by clicking "open" instead of "save." Then I edited the file yesterday and unfortuantely clicked "save" instead of "save as." Now I can't find the file, despite the fact that I turned on view hidden and system files. When I search for all files edited yesterday, it can't find anything!! I really need this file soon, so I appreciate the quick help.

As a test, today I opened the same file from Webmail and I again chose to "open" instead of "save." Then I edited it and then clicked "save." With it still open in Word, I looked at the "properties" and I found that it is in a subfolder of the "Content.IE5". After a lot of trouble I found a way to browse to Content.IE5, but I don't see that subfolder (\temporary internet files\low\content.IE5\QIM1AZLI) anywhere. In fact all the folders in the Content.IE5 folder seem to be most recently edited 2 or more days ago! It makes no sense. So either my Vista Home Basic is lying to me (it won't find that folder) or Microsoft Word is lying to me (there's really no such folder "QIM1ALZI"). I'm also worried that even if I found the folder "QIM1ALZI" that my file from yesterday (which is what I really need) will be in a different folder in the Content.IE5 folder.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I know this might sound thick but can anyone tell me how to set up a default A4 page size in Word 2007. The default size is letter 8" x 11.5" (21.59cm x 29.54cm), which is the American standard size I think. I have to change it every time to A4 and have searched everywhere to change it but cant find it. Please help

Many thanks

A:HELP!!! Microsoft Works Word Processor will not open, unable to open ANY documents!!!

From how you describe it,it looks as if something is denying it.such as your firewall or if you are using Firefox you might not have it as allowed, these are just guesses however, take a look at this site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241165

I have a group of files I created in Microsoft Works 3.0 ( word processing and spreadsheets.) I have the original files on Floppy Disc, Scan Disc, and on my Hard Drive. I have tried coverters, and the best results I have received are partial, or full text with symbols. Nothing with the original documents creation form and font style. I have been told that the only true way to see these files in their original form is to run the files through Works 3.0 with Windows 3.0 with MS DOS. ( before Windows had its own operating system. )
Is anyone out here running Microsoft Works 3.0, with Windows 3.0, on top of a MS DOS operating system. These files should open in their original form, and then are able to be save in DOC. format. All helps are Welcome!

I have some old files transferred from a previous computer that say they are "Microsoft Works Word Processor" files. I have a version of Works on my current machine, but its word processor element appears to be Word. Word does not like these files. I am pretty sure that I have tried to OpenOffice them as well.

Any ideas of a free prog that will read these or, even better, convert them to a more standard format?

I used ABC Amber text convertor to convert a batch of old works files to word. Check it out here.
