Microsoft Word 2003 Header-Footer Question

Q: Microsoft Word 2003 Header-Footer Question

I'm trying to get a Word template that has the auto-text "file name and path" inserted into the footer. I want it to update automatically whenever I save the document into a new directory. Right now it stays the same. Can anyone point me in the right direction? This is a work computer that does NOT have the ribbon.

A: Microsoft Word 2003 Header-Footer Question

you just want to to state where it resides in the footer? in the header/footer section, select footer > tools button on the toolbar > insert auto text > filename and path. Then save the template, should be good to go.

Frustrated new member here...I am trying to figure out how to make my letterhead logo only appear on the first page of a 2003 Word document. Short answer is -- make the first page a separate section, then apply the header/footer to just that section.

If you get stuck putting this into practice, post back.

A:Word Header & Footer

Hi Linda24

If You go into Word 2003, it is in View and header and Footer. You can then drag the box into your Toolbar. you will most likely find that your friend has a template to default or something if they have the header and footer toolbar come up when they open word. As it should only open when you have selected the header and Footer command under the View Menu.

Hope thats helpful?

Recently our Office Suite was upgraded from 2000 to 2003.

I had a macro (that you helped with) working well in the old version to upon save take a field from a worksheet 'lists' and write that field into the header and footer, and then update the last saved timestamp....

Now it will not write to the header and footer at all, and will not update the time stamp for last saved.

Here is the code from the worksheet 'lists':
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Excel.Range)
If Target.Column = 1 Or 2 Then
On Error Resume Next

Application.DisplayAlerts = False
'ActiveSheet.protect UserInterfaceOnly:=True
Selection.TextToColumns Destination:=Worksheets("lists").Range("A3"), DataType:=xlDelimited, _
TextQualifier:=xlDoubleQuote, ConsecutiveDelimiter:=False, Tab:=False, _
Semicolon:=False, Comma:=False, Space:=False, Other:=True, OtherChar _
:="*", FieldInfo:=Array(Array(1, 1), Array(2, 1))
Application.DisplayAlerts = True
End If

End Sub
(The 'lists' code as far as I know is only there to set the values to be used in the header, the workbook code is the one that takes those values and writes them to the header/footer)

Here is the workbook code:

Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, cancel As Boolean)

Dim filename, rdims, name, fs As String
Worksheets("lists").Range("A6").Value = fs

Call SetSaveLoc
If Worksheets("lists"... Read more

When I open Header & Footer toolbar and click "insert auto text", the drop-down box is empty; ie things like filename, filepath, author etc have disappeared.

A while ago I created autotext entries on the main autotext toolbar and these are still there. When I did this I deleted the default entries like "yours sincerely" etc. I did not fiddle with the header and footer autotext entries though, so can't understand where these have got to.

Any suggestions, please? (Using WINME/ Office 2000)

I am so glad to have found this forum!

Yes, I am using outdated software, but this 5-yr old laptop came with XP and it still works great for my purposes. I am also using Office 2003.

I have been asked to format a Word 2003 document with a header/page numbering system as follows: Name / Title / page number; e.g., Smith / Report / 17. It should appear at the upper right.

I see there is a way to do something close: Author, Page #, Date, by going to View, Header and Footer, Insert AutoText. But that's not going to cut it.

Is there a way to accomplish what I've been asked to do (Smith / Report / 17)?

Many thanks!

A:Header format question, XP, Word 2003

You don't need to use AutoText. Since only the page number changes, just type in the rest how you want it and insert the page number field at the end.

Just wanted to comment on the now-closed thread about viewing Headers and Footers in Word 2007. I recently moved to using 2007 so all my previous docs are in 2003. I was editing a doc that needed a change in the header. Thinks: rolleyes:because 2007 is "intuitive") this will be on the insert or view menus. Couldn't find any mention of H&Fs. Looked up help and it says open insert ribbon and select H&Fs. NO - IT'S NOT THERE!! I read your thread about revealing the blank space - but that's not the answer either. So I could see it on print preview - but nowhere else.
What I found was that using Office Button/ Word Options (at the foot) and then Advanced; there is - right at the very end of the advanced options - a section which says "Lay Out this document as if created in.." and I selected Word 2003. This immediately revealed the H&Fs as per Word 2003 and I was able to edit them. Moreover .. when I reverted to viewing as 2007 layout it was still there AND the H&F menu section had appeared on the Insert Ribbon AND it has continued to appear on re-starting Word. So it must have been a "first-time" problem on switching over to 2007.
(But why does it have to be so complicated ???)

I have managed to lose the drop down menu that displays when one selects Header/Footer from the "View" option on the Word toolbar.

What I did was accidentally drag it over the toolbar and released the mouse button which resulted in the drop down menu not displaying when I select Header/Footer from the "View" option.

What does happen when I select Header/Footer is the header and footer in the document currently open displays the header/footer boxes.
I can edit what exists in the open document but there is no way to create new headers/footers or use the options normally available on the Header/Footer drop down menu.

I've searched on just about every word and phrase I can think of in Word Help, but alas it's not being very helpful. Perhaps someone here can help me out.

Many thanks!

A:Retrieving Word Header/Footer Drop Down Menu

The toolbar should have embedded itself in the main toolbar in that case. You should be able to grab the left hand end of it and undock it.

If that does not work for some reason, I think toolbar settings are held in "", so with Word closed, search for and rename any "" files to "normal.old". Then restart Word.

You will need to enable hidden files and folders under Search or you will not find the file(s). There must be at least one. is the default template, and when Word does nor find the file when it runs, it creates a new one with all standard defaults.

I have a large number of Word files and would like to add a footer or header to each showing the filename. I know how to do it by opening each file one at a time but this will be quite time consuming and I was wondering if there was a way to do a batch of files at once? Any suggestions would be much appreciated as there is quite a large number of files I need to change.Thanks.

A:Inserting Header/footer In Multiple Word Files

I can't think of a way of doing this to previously saved files but if you edit the file to have this on then it will do this for all new documents.

The only other way would be to use a VB script to add it on opening of a file. This would mean coding it and then opening every file. The only advantage to this is hat you would not need to do manually for every file.

Hey guys, been awhile since I was here..anyway.

My sister is trying to write a paper here with MS Word XP, and when trying to add in a Header, the Header is displaying on all pages, as opposed to just the front page.

I've searched around in options and tried to erase the 2nd page header with no luck. The way I've been putting on the header is through View > Header and Footer.

My question is this: How do I isolate that one header on the front page and keep it so that is the only header in the entire document?

Thanks for the help.

A:Simple: Inputting Header/Footer into Word, displays on all pages.

Go to File>Page Setup and click the Layout tab. Check the box "Different first page." This makes the first page header different from the rest of that section.

You can also do what you want by inserting a Next Page section break somewhere on your first page, then unselecting "Same as Previous" for the second-page header.

Having a bit of trouble customising my Footer when it comes to page numbering.

I do not wish to count the front page and contents pages of my document so I would usually de-select the "Link to previous" button, but in Word 2007, the "Link to previous" button never seems to be highlighted (active) for clicking..

Therefore it is forcing all my pages to share the same header and footer as the page above...

Am I doing something wrong here?

Hi All,

I have both WordPerfect 12 and Word 2003 on my computer. Note that I do most of my document creating in WordPerfect because I believe that WordPerfect gives greater control over what you want to do than Word.

I created a document in WP with a footer that contains my reference source for information that I cited. I converted this document to Rich Text format. The problem is that the document from the WP transfer formatted fine, except for the footer reference. When I go to Print Preview in Word or to Page Layout the footer is not there. HOWEVER, if I go to edit the footer in Word, it is there. It just is not coming through on Print Preview.

I tried just editing the footer in Word, thinking that the WP format did not carry over. The footer still does not appear in Word. How do I get Word to show the WP footer?

A:WordPerfect 12 to Word 2003 Footer Help

Hey All,

There seems to be very different parameters between Word and WP's handling of document headers and footers. I opened Word and did a Edit/Select All, to copy the text to the Clipboard. I suppose I could have opened up Notepad, and copied it into that. However, I wanted to retain formatting. So instead, I opened up Wordpad. (The very poor man's version of MS Word, with no spell check our special options that is a part of Windows.) Pasting the document into WordPad, I was finally able to successfully create and show the footer. (Just had to re-type the footer.)

Word accepts WordPad's footer formatting features, so when doing WP to Word file conversions, users may have to use the clipboard to move from one pure MS based supported Windows program to the other pure MS Windows based program. In my case, needing to transfer from Word Pad to Word for a successful footer transfer.

One area where I have always found Word to be better than WP is in Internet File based transfers. I thought Footer formats would work better between Word and WP. I will leave this topic open if anyone knows easier ways to do document header/footer transfers between Word and WP to comment.

I liked having all my documents open in the same program that i can control with the x in the corner. This is hard to explain so i Hope you know what i am talking about. Hey All,

I have a document in Word 2003 that is five pages, and what I want to be able to do is to create a footer that will ONLY SHOW ON THE LAST PAGE OF THE DOCUMENT. I have gone into Help Sections for the program on-line and there is information about creating headers and footers, breaking them up into sections, making different headers and footers on alternating pages. But I don't want them to alternate, nor do I want the one footer taking up the bottom of every page.

The example of the format that I need is the following:

Pages 1-5 contain the article
The last page, page 5 contains the following text as a footer, (text is for illustration only)

A:Solved: Word 2003: Creating A Footer on Last Page Only?

What you do depends on how the document is laid out. If there is a page break between pages 4 and 5, you will need to change it to a Next Page Section Break. In Word, the thinking is that changes to the headers and footers create new sections in the document. In this case, page 5 would start a new section because the footer will be different than the preceding pages. But before we continue, be sure to click File / Page Setup / Layout and make sure that there is no checkmark on either Different odd and even or Different first page.

To insert a Next Page Section Break

First, you need to see what you're doing and the easiest way to see the page break is to change to Draft view (on the Word menu, click View / Normal).

Place the cursor in front of the first character on page 5.
On Word's menu, click Insert / Break
Locate Next Page and click on it.

You will have a page break and a section break. Place your cursor on the Page Break and press Delete on your keyboard to get rid of it.

You can set your page view back to Print Layout by clicking View / Print Layout on the Word menu.

If you place your cursor on page four and look at the left side of the status bar at the bottom of the screen, you will see that it says Section 1. Place the cursor on page 5 and the status bar will change to Section 2. Go into the footer area for Section 2 (if you go into the footer and it says Section 1 Footer, either scroll down until it says Section 2 Footer or click the next section but... Read more

Just recently something has changed with my Microsoft Office Word 2003 app.

I'm a writer and I have always been able to drag my pages that I have written today to a folder in My Documents and the same file would stay on my desktop for immediate access later. I realize other may not work this way but it is how I prefer to work as it has become my habit

When I try to drag and drop it now, it drops into the My Documents folder but it no longer remains on the desktop.

Now, in conjunction with this problem, I have another new problem, which is that when I write a page of text in Word and save it to a My Documents folder it doesn't go there. Also when I save a picture to My Pictures as I've always done it won't be there when I look for it. Something is preventing me from saving things and I haven't a clue what it is. I have to open the My Documents folder and drag the Word text page into it. It's the only way I can save stuff for some reason.

Can someone please tell me how I can fix this problem?

Thank you in advance.

Hi There;

OS Windows 7 using MS Word 2003

So, I am on my laptop multi-tasking with books, note pads etc and accidentally hit something on the keypad, which changed the header / view. At this point I closed Word without saving but it did not change the view of the header. Oooops!
Anything could have been accidentally clicked, even more than one key. It could have been one of the F Keys because these keys are never used by me (No idea what they do, lol). The header/footer view went from a white background around the text to a grey background. Usually the view would go to the white background around the text after closing the Header/Footer. Now it stays grey (or gray) all the time.
Couldn't find anything on the Header/Footer toolbar. Went to "Format" drop down menu and opened most options that made sense to open. No Luck. Any advice? Thank You.

Hi all, thanks in anticipation:

I have Office 2003. Tonight I opened a web-based Office document and it seems to have screwed up

I always like to view all Word docs with Header/Footer view ON. All of a sudden, every single document opens without any header/footer visible, even though I often DO have a header actually there. The default page layout has not changed: it is Print Layout. So it should show up. But the header keeps unticking itself from the VIEW column on the toolbar.

I have tried opening and pressing view header/footer, it appears, then I add some text and delete it and press SAVE ALL. But when I reboot Word it still won't bloody open up the document properly. The header/footer just goes missing.

Please help! I know it's pedantic, but I live with Word, sadly.

When adding a footer to Excel spreadsheets, there is the option to add the file path, file name or sheet name so that it is easy to find the document again. These are found in Header and Footer Elements at the top of the sheet in Design tab.

Is there something similar in Word 2007? When I click on Footer in the Design tab I just get a list of different styles but nothing that puts in the file path automatically.

Generally, when you do the diff first page thing, it wipes the header/footer off of page 1. So, just copy your footer from page 2 into page 1. That's all.

Are we talking about Microsoft Word here, WordPerfect or ..

On the chance that its Word you are referring to, locate your "" template.

Where it is stored depends on the version of Word and your operating system. There will be one occurrence of the file for each user logging on the PC.

Its marked as a system file, so enable the viewing of these files before you go looking. It will be there. This is assuming Windows OS. If its a Mac, cant help you.

Open it in Word, and make all the selections you want as a default. Save it, and from then on every new document will inherit those options.

Can I set the Header and Footer once and have it automatically appear on other worksheets in the book? Then I can just change one or two things without having to redo all the formatting and stuff?

Footer and Header information is missing and displayed incorrectly when opening a saved document from a network share.

If you click on “File” “Open” and open a file from a network share the footer and headers are missing and at the bottom of the document Word add a bunch of stuff. Please see below.

But if you click on File then select the same document from the recently open list, it will open and look normal with the footer and header.

However, I cant seem to make the footer work properly without Dreamweaver. Is there any way to do this correctly without Dreamweaver?

Also it seems I can only get the header work properly if I do not use Microsoft Word as my document viewer. I am much more comfortable using Word with Outlook.

Can anyone help?

A:Word 2000 Header Question/Help

If you want a different header on every page (what are you changing that requires this?), then you must insert a section break at the bottom of each page. When you enter the headers, make sure you turn off the "same as previous" property.

I have created in Microsoft Word 2003 on an XP OS some lengthy documents. I created them using a view setting of 150%.

I sent them to my employer, who is using Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 97. My boss opened them with his system and they displayed on the screen at a view of 200%. He wants me to send him Word documents that he can open from the CD-R that I send that will automatically display at 100% view on the screen so that he does not have to set the view for each document as it displays.

So what is the answer.

Is there a way that I can save my created documents so that when my boss gets them on a CD-R that they will open on his system at a view setting of 100%.

Is there also a way that his system can be set to default to 100% in reading from the CD-R.

My boss does not want to copy the documents to the system hard disk from my sent CD-R, preferring to read and copy directly from the CD-R that I send, so that the original documents will not accidentally be changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all, do you know if it is possible to word-wrap text around an inserted picture in Word 2003? Basically, I'm trying to create a class reunion program with a one-page bio of a person with his/her picture in the upper right-hand corner. I have pasted a picture and positioned it where I want at the top; however, it forces the text below it downwards, which is not what I want. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: Word 2003 - Insert Picture/Word Wrap Question

Select the picture

Make sure the mouse pointer is hovering over the picture and click once with the right mouse button

Click once with the left mouse button on the menu choice "Format Picture"

Select the "Layout" tab

In the section called "Wrapping Style" click once with the left mouse button on "Square"

Beneath where it says Horizontal alignment click once with the left mouse button on "Right"

Click on OK

You should be able to type text to the left of the picture.

With Word, I have words that i use that are correct, but it keeps underlining them in red and i know you can add the words into its dictionary so that this doesn't happen for those words anymore. I forgot on where you do it, i know i should know as i've been using word since Office '95. I just always click on ignore. Someone did tell me once, but i need my memory refreshed.

A:Microsoft Word 2003 - Need Help

The easiest way I found was to run spell check and when the pop up dialog box appears on words not in Word's dictionary( red squigglies) , there is an option to ignore, change, etc., or "add to dictionary". It is there that I make a decision whether to add or not, and I add it to the general dictionary. Check the HELP to determine how to set up a *special* dictionary, if that is what you want to do, just for these words.
Hope this helps.

Hum.. You want to insert a mathematical expression in your text? Or do you want Word to calculate a quare root for you?

In case of the former, you have to install an Office component called Equation Editor.

Hi there,

I asked a similar question before in that it involved Microsoft Word 2003; and I have another in a related vein now. Is it okay/or safe to have 100 and more pictures in one .doc file? I don?t mean that the pictures here are ?as-is? -- in other words, big pictures -- but they are in fact shrunken down in the document ? sort-of like small stills, lined up. Is this okay to do?

A:Care with using Microsoft Word 2003

I don't see why there would be ay issues having that many images in one file.
At least if anything, it would be up to the computer, not MS Word, MS Word is made for large documents, if required in the office.

Windows Explorer tells me it's at C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\, but I don't see andy AppData in the Users\Owner display. Currently to open a Word file, I basically go through C - Users - Owner - My Documents - WORD.DOC

I have similar ACCESS.DOC, EXCEL.DOC, PDF.DOC, PPT.DOC folders in My Documents to get into files for those Microsoft Office programs. in Microsoft Word 2003

In Explorer go to Tools menu, Folder Options, View, then make sure to enable Show Hidden Files Folders and Drives.

Hi, I've been having this problem with MS Word 2003 for a little bit.

What happens is, I open the application, and the Word box pops up like it's about to open like it should, but then it takes forever to open, maybe over 10 minutes or so, unless I just end the process like I usually do since it takes so long.

The only thing I've noticed different about anything when I open it is, Navw32.exe starts running, and if i end that, an alert window opens that says "The document C:\Documents and Settings\David Solis\Application Data\Microsoft\Normal\ is still infected. Do you want to delete this file?". I'll click no, and Word opens.

Any idea what any of this is, why it's doing it, and how to stop it? Thanks!

I have never had a problem with Microsoft Word until now. I can use Word fine on my computer. In the past week or so, however, when I send Microsoft Word documents to people, sometimes they say they can open them and sometimes they say they can’t open them. It depends on the person. On some of my e-mail clients (I have multiple e-mail accounts), I can open the files I send myself (i.e. I will send an e-mail to my multiple e-mail accounts and I will attach Word documents to that e-mail. On some clients I can open the files I send myself, and others I can’t...I did a check disk /r (checkdisk repair) on March 9 and it fixed the problem. I could send Word documents and everyone could download them and I could send Word documents to myself and download them via AOL Mail, Yahoo, and everything. And then the problem came back again. When I click on the file in the mail client that doesn’t read the documents correctly, the attachment comes up as saying that the mail client interprets the .doc file as being related to Notepad (specifically listing Notepad as the program it wants to open the file in), not Word. Then when I try to open it (either straight from the e-mail or after downloading the file back to my hard drive), it tries to open in word and gives me the converter message. When it was working for a little while on March 9, the way I knew a Word document would work correctly even before trying to open a file is that Mail would list it as being a Word doc... Read more

A:Microsoft Word 2003 nightmare

I haven't read nor absorbed your entire message.
There's one thing that comes to mind immediately - your clients may have slightly different Word. If they have 2007, you need to send them the 2007 version or have them open as previous version (if possible).

Long ago there was an office update which added some sort of converter to my Office2003. Perhaps if you save as some other than 2003 .doc it would work. That update permitted me to open a document or two someone sent me.

Edited: what is one supposed to do with that megaupload site? All I see to pay lots of UK currency. I'm willing to try to open your
files in my Office2003 but not under those conditions.

Hello there.

Microsoft office 2003 problem.
When starting microsoft word on vista ulitmate, there seems to be a problem

This will automatically shut down, saying there was a problem and is shutting down...
The other programs seem fine, Excel, powerpoint, etc.

I havent a clue what this could be, has anyone else had this problem.
In the top right corner of microsoft word it will say "Finalizing Installation" and then after you type a couple of sentences it will shut down on its own..

This is for a friend of mine, who had microsoft office put on when she bought the laptop of a friend, though she does not have the disk, so i wondered if this is an installation problem.

Would this be some sort of copy of microsoft office 2003, that was put on for her
She has only found this out now as her son needs to use word for school
( vista ultimate, 64 bit, sp2)

A:Microsoft office 2003/ Problem with Word

I assume that you're opening up Word from the Start menu here...

Open up the Start Menu and go to Word. Right-click on it. Open up its Compatability tab which is the third tab.

2003 is an XP product. Therefore, Word (and Excel and Access if they're 2003 versions) should be run in compatibility mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)."

If this is not so, check the box and select Windows XP from the list to make it so amd OK the box to close it.

See if it runs now.

I've created a character at unicode hex E000. Whenever I try to enter it into Microsoft Word, however, it ends up giving me some kind of Chinese character. I tried saving the character at unicode hex E010, as well, but it just gives me another Asian character.

I don't want to have to find those Asian characters and change them, as I may need them in the future.

I've been using word 2003 in windows 7 for a couple years now and it always worked fine. Recently, I have been experiencing this issue where if I click on "save as" to save the file and then double click the C drive it just sits there and freezes for a couple minutes (and I get the "not responding" box with everything whited out). I tried to uninstall and reinstall microsoft office 2003 and the problem is still there. I don't know why it's doing that when I click on the C drive because I can save the file to the desktop or under documents right away without any freezing and then move the file -- but this is a hassle. How can I fix this problem?

Please help!

Whenever I try to open a saved Word document (or even a PowerPoint), the file doesn't open and I get the following message:

"The file ____ is not available.
You may be encountering this message because an anti-virus program is not allowing the file to open. This can be caused by one of two conditions. Either the anti-virus program needs to be updated (due to a compability problem with this application) or there is a virus in the file but the anti-virus program cannot properly remove or process the virus it has found....etc."

Then when I close the document, I get the following message:
"The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?"

I've tried deleting the file. I've restarted my computer, deleted "" through my computer's search engine, and then opening word. I've tried renaming the file to "normal.old", and followed the instructions after that like I found on a website.
Also, I went to Tools > Macro > Macros and gone to the "Macros in" list, clicked "All active templates and documents", but there weren't any macros listed there.

I tried using the Macro Organizer, and there weren't any macros listed there either.

Many websites suggested that I open the file through MS word and then hold shift before opening it. When I try to open a file, it just says that it isn't available.

Oh, and I'm running on Windows Vista.

I've a little problem, when I start Word 2003, it takes around 20 seconds and then I can use it.
Some times there is even a force close. (then the word 2003 freezes)

And if I type: winword /a in Start it starts up directly.
So now my default program for .doc files = winword. (which is slow)
I can't change it to /a.
(/a is add-ins??? so winword /a = word without add-ins?)
Can i disable those add-ins?

My Pc specs = the 2nd in my computer specification
vista home premium x64
4gb ram
640gb harddisk

Thanks in advance

Sorry on the go

But all it is. Is that you have size 10 and then size 22 after it

I can't explain it clearly it's 10 10 10 10 10 22 22 22
And when you backspace the 22 size it stays 22 until you make it size10 again
As for that little dot, it must be the font at that size, or something

I am using a computer in the office. There are two of us that use this computer, myself and my boss. Neither of us are really computer saavy, we understand the basics and thats about it. We only work in the office on rainy days, any other time we are outside. But we have been using Microsoft word 2003 for a few years and have never had a problem loading it until now. It takes up to 5 minutes sometimes to load the program. We are using Windows XP 2002 edition, service pack 3. The computer is a dell Dimension DM051 Intel (R) Pentium (R) D CPU 2.8GHz, 2.79 GHZ, 1.00GB of RAM. All our reports are in Word format and every time we open any report it is taking up to 5 min. to load. Is this a virus, spyware? I dont' think its the computer itself because we've never had a problem with this or any other program before. Any support or suggestions would greatly be appreciated thank you.
