Unable to install latest IE Cumulative Security Update

Q: Unable to install latest IE Cumulative Security Update

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB942615)

The above update keeps failing when I try to install it. Have waited a few days in between in case it was corrupt and had to be fixed. Still no joy. Is it just my laptop or is anyone else having this issue?

Thanks,

After (finally) installing the latest released Cumulative update on my HP Pavilion dv7, Bluetooth no longer functions properly. Playing Music via Bluetooth to my Beatbox Portable is now "choppy" sounding - behaving like my Laptop is too far away for the Bluetooth connection. Even when I lay my Laptop next to the Device, it still doesn't function properly. Prior to the install of this latest release it was flawless - up to 100 feet away. Now cant use it at all. I note the date of the INTEL BLUETOOTH DRIVER is 3/2016 -- so looks like it was updated in this latest W10 update.

Anybody else? If no known fix I guess I'll have to back out this update, if possible, because I REALLY need this Bluetooth to function properly.

For some reason my Windows 10 Home (x86) fails to install the latest cumulative update KB3194798 that was released a few days ago. It fails every time with error 0x8e5e03fa. Manually downloading and installing it doesn't work either, that in turn fails without an error message at all (The following updates were not installed: Security Update for Windows (KB3194798))
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Hi there

after applying the latest cumulative updates IE11 is now broken on my system (W10 pro X-64)..

Often the Main (home page) of a site works but as soon as you link to other links in the site garbled text often appears.

Here's an example from BBC website. Main news page opens but link to a story and :

One can partly fix by pressing F12 and setting IE compatibility to IE10 or IE9.

My laptop downloaded and installed the latest major Windows 10 update this morning (took several hours!), and now my screen resolution has changed - the icons and text are all way too big. There are no system restore points available, so I cannot revert to earlier working version. If I go into settings and select display, I am only offered two possibile resolutions, and neither of these is suitable. What can I do?

A remote code execution vulnerability in a component of Outlook Express could allow an attacker who sent a Windows Address Book file to a user of an affected system to take complete control of the system.

If a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less affected than users who operate with administrative user rights.

Affected Components:

• Outlook Express 5.5 Service Pack 2 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
• Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 when installed on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

I found some questionable files this week that had been downloaded by my son. I have since spent a great deal of time trying to scan and clean the computer. Each malware/spyware/anti-virus scanner has had varying levels of success.

It seems that the bulk of my issues have been resolved but I am still unable to install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719177)

Each time I try to update it, it aborts and gives me an error code (80073712), that is not showing up in any google searches or searches of microsoft's site.

Additionally, every time I shutdown or restart the computer it shows that new updates are being installed.

I am using Windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

IE 11 cumulative security update for Windows 7 fails to configure after reboot. It then reverts and restarts. Everything else appears to be operating normally.

This is the only update that fails to configure. Install finishes without error, but it won't configure on the boot.

Tried (not in this order):
Removed IE 11 and added it back through WIndows update.
   Reset Windows update components.
Downloaded and installed update specifically (KB2909921).
Ran the "Fix it" (it says it fixes a few things, but doesn't change the problem)
Installed update with Trend Micro turned off
*probably other things I can't recall, because I've been at it for too long.

**I have limited time with this machine, because it is otherwise perfectly functional.

Hiya

Sticking this one in here, for a week

This is two fold:

A vulnerability exists in ISA Server 2000 because of the way that it handles malformed HTTP requests. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a malicious HTTP request that could potentially allow an attacker to poison the cache of the affected ISA server. As a result, the attacker could either bypass content restrictions and access content that they would normally not have access to or they could cause users to be directed to unexpected content. Additionally, an attacker could use this in combination with a separate Cross Site Scripting vulnerability to obtain sensitive information such as logon credentials.

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in ISA Server 2000 that could allow an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability to create a NetBIOS connection with an ISA Server by utilizing the NetBIOS (all) predefined packet filter. The attacker would be limited to services that use the NetBIOS protocol running on the affected ISA Server.

Affected Software:

• Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 Service Pack 2
Note The following software programs include ISA Server 2000. Customers who use these software programs should install the provided ISA Server 2000 security update.
• Microsoft Small Business Server 2000
• Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 8 (KB2838727) isn't working very well on my laptop.
On installing this, after rebooting I'm a stuck on blue screen saying that the PC has encountered an error and needs to restart. It also shows an error code like 0xc000021a. While that message is displayed, a percentage meter goes to 100 and the PC is automatically rebooted.

Then it tries to diagnose and repair but fails and says that the PC could not be repaired and a Srt log file is saved.

Then the only thing which saves me is going to the Advanced Options within that recovery mode and restoring a system point.
Can someone help me on this? What exactly in this update is crashing my PC?

I had opened a similar thread in the BSODs category of the website, but now that I have realized that it's more related to a Windows Update I'm opening a thread here.

Thanks.

Abhishek Sharma

Hello sevenforums, Today I installed 8 important updates one failed - "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2898785)". I use firefox should I ignore the failed update or make sure that it is installed properly so I don't cause future problems. The update is "Important" it says so i the view installed updates.

One of the 8 updates was - "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" I uninstalled IE11 because it messed up my weather desktop gadget, and I didn't plan on using IE11.

I tried the standalone installer for the failed updated and got the "this update is not applicable to your computer" message. The only thing I can think of doing now is using system restore and trying to install the updates again. My antivirus was not disabled during the installation of the updates. Should I disable it? It never caused problems with any of my previous updates.

Thank you for any help.

I contacted MS tech support Wednesday and the support tech was unable to resolve the issue after deleting my update logs and running some utility software. The case was escalated Yesterday, the level two tech indicated that some services were corrupted and just initiated a repair install. I just completed the repair install with all the updates and the issue is still not resolved. I've been dealing with this for some time and have been using another browser in the meantime. I also tried to install IE10 with the same problem. Also tried to uninstall IE9 but could not even do it manually. The IE9 security update failures began with KB2817183 and have continued through KB2829530 released on 5/14/2013. Other Windows updates that come up appear to work OK. I have run the sfc /scannow tool and the system update readiness tool and find a list of 4 unavailable repair files in the CheckSUR file. Ultimately I want to update to IE10 but am guessing that I will need to fix these files before that can happen. I have pasted the CheckSur file here for convenience but also have attached a zip file of all the CBS log files. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have a large number of Manifest file problems.

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

Hi spapakons,

Please remove every crack/bypass on your system in order to proceed.
There are 2 main reasons,
1.

Troubleshooting a system with counterfeit programs is useless as it is not known what has been modified to your system.
A counterfeit program contains heavily modified code which causes the system to behave in unexpected ways.
For this reason, analyzing counterfeit systems is unreliable and most analysts won't try it.

Why o why is Microsoft so slapdash with its updates. The error code I am getting covers everything under the sun and offers no solutions to the problem.
I am so fed up following so many leads from its advice pages but can never get to resolving the problem. Is there anyone anywhere that has overcome this problem.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit IE9.0.1

Thanks

Recent (Oct 15th) huge number of security updates, caused grief on 32bit Vista SP2 which I have narrowed down to the IE8 Cumulative Security Update by a process of elimination re-applying patchsets & testing the box.

With IE8 cumaltive security, in Stage 3 of "Configuring Update" it seems to be stuck at 0%, the chime occurs, but after a while the screen blanks, and the hardware resets a little later causing a reboot.

Updated ATI Radeon Video driver to latest has been to no avail; the machine seems solid in use and is also running Linux (and updated an old install with 10 months of patches) perfectly. Checking BIOS & drivers are up to date hasn't turned anything up, and the box and install generally solid. I tried booting with 'Safe options' to configure the update, but that did not help, so it would appear unlikely the resets are a driver issue.

Whilst I have the system back through system restore to checkpoint before the update, and have now hidden this patch, this leaves me with an insecure IE8.

1) Can I report the problem with the update anywhere?
2) Could I obtain smaller patchsets to find the likely culprit?
3) Can I downgrade IE8 to IE7?

Obviously I can use FF-3.5 for normal browsing, but some Windows programs & sites try to force use of IE, so the security issue does matter. This has caused much inconvenience and time, to a relatively tech savvy user, so one would hope a cumumaltive patch becomes available which does not have t... Read more

Hello

From the CBS log it looks as if the repair was to an opencl.dll file which is not related to a windows update but usually to do with graphics cards such as nVidia cards which change the opencl.dll file.

Have you still got problems trying to install KB3124263? Quite often these problems sort themselves out after a day or two.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/wind...b3193494-also-failing-to-install-508542.shtml

Microsoft has recently released Windows 10 cumulative update KB3193494 in order to bring the KB3189866 saga to an end, but it turns out that there are users who are experiencing issues with this new patch as well.

Some of those who were offered the new cumulative update are reporting problems when attempting to install it, and the way it happens looks very similar to what others have experienced in the past.

In most of the cases, the cumulative update fails to install, and it simply rolls back before getting users back to the desktop. The update is then reoffered and redownloaded before the system is once again rebooted to attempt the install.

Users who couldn?t install the original KB3189866 update were confident that this new one fixes the problems, so they rushed to install it.

?I have already read some issues with this update and that you should install the offline updater. It has the same problem. Microsoft released KB3193494 to resolve the download issue, so I tried again. Still the same problem,? one of them explains on Microsoft?s Community forums.

Post-installation problems
Others are reporting issues spotted after the update successfully installed on their computers and upon removal, everything seems to be returning to normal, which is living proof that this latest cumulative update is the source of the problems.

Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB3197954 Fails to Install as Well

Windows 10 cumulative updates are certainly pretty helpful for the majority of users running Microsoft?s latest OS version, but at the same time, they are turning into sort of nightmare for others who can?t simply install them successfully.

Issues with Windows 10 cumulative updates have been around for a while, and Microsoft has tried to fix them on several occasions, but for some reason, they keep coming back pretty much in the same form.

KB3197954 makes no exception, and after being pushed to Windows 10 users last week, it appears that it fails to install on a number of machines due to a cause that?s yet to be determined.

More than just installation issues
Posts on Microsoft?s Community forums are pointing towards various problems experienced with cumulative update KB3197954, including system freezes, but in most of the cases, it?s the typical ?failing to install? issue that makes it impossible for some users to deploy the patch on their computers.

?Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3197954) keeps failing to install on my system. The install starts fine but while restarting claims the install has failed and reverts everything. Howdy,

I have been trying to download and install Cumulative Update, Win 10, Version 1607 for x64-based systems since Sept. 15 but so far I am coming up empty. I realize the help forums have been loaded with folks having the same problem but I decided to start my own thread instead of joining in ones already started in case it is a result of what kind of computer I am using and the Programs I am running on it.

First of all, I am running on an All-In-One HP Pavilion 23-g017c (x64) AMD A6-5200 APU w/Radeon HD Graphics, running Windows 10, Version 1607, Build 14393.105, using the Edge Browser while utilizing Windows Firewall and Windows Defender as my major security programs.

I have tried daily to install the update via Windows Update but it does not install for one reason or the other. Some of the threads I have visited the last few days suggest to manually download and install it from the Windows Update Catalog. I tried this manual install both yesterday and today and came up empty both times.

I have never had any major problems with Windows 10 when it comes to receiving updates so this has me dead in my tracks.

So, basically I have three questions:

(1) Any ideas of anything I can do to get this update on my computer? or

(2) If people like me are having trouble with a particular update will Microsoft eventually come out with a fix? and/or

(3) Does Microsoft have a link for people with update problems like the one I am experiencing?

I will appr... Read more

Hello and thanks in advance for you help.

Having purchased this PC from an acquaintance for my son last week, we are unfortunately having redirection problems surfing and difficulties installing or updating security programs.

Using any browser (but I commonly use Chrome) I'm constantly redirected to one of several sites such ASK.com, shagaholic.com, ebay, youtube....
With regards to installing programs Ive tried but failed to install AVG and my ISP's (virgin media) free software. I have managed to install Ad Aware but I cannot update the definitions and have the same problem with all windows updates.

I ran Malwarebytes but the system crashed last night after 14 hours of running and reaching nearly 1.9 million files.

I hope that this info helps

Since then I have removed and reinstalled java (latest version) and uninstalled emsisoft anti malware program.
Attempted to run Dr. web, system became unstable (even in enhanced protection mode) rendered both mouse and keyboard ineffective, again had to power down.

All of this came about because I am unable to install MS security patches. Virus or malware is blocking same.
I have had experience with running GMER program in past and tried several runs each time system either rebooted or shut down, with out indicating any root kit activity.
Will attach GMER log and DDS log as requested.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. As of now I am missing four possibly five critical MS security patches, and have to click mouse 3 or 4 times for any actions to occur. Prior to the blocking system was running without incidence

Just a suggestion, create a restore point (System Restore Point - Create) install the update then reinstall the drivers for your keyboard (Software Downloads: Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000). I don't know if that would help, but it may. The restore point may give you a way back if it doesn't work.

They both happened at the same time so am not sure if they are related but they did happen during the lengthy Windows 10 upgrade. It sure took longer than recent ones.

Here's my issue. 360 total security turned off several auto updates and programs including flash, adobe, last pass, and more. I play a couple games on facebook and have found lastpass to be a valuable tool. But this change concerns me, as it changes other behind the scenes things and a computer mobile guy replaced my harddrive and I don't have the key. But it is not pirated and I do like to live below my means but not illegally!

At this point I don't want to jump to a malware issue, but I do want my computer to be safe on the net. My current job is part time and once you earn a certain amount, you get involuntary time off. I like the job but not the terms so I continue to look for something self supporting. In otherwords, I need as much free/shareware suggestions as possible!

Thanks for suggestions how to get my laptop in tiptop shape as it's both a jobhunting tool and my only leisure luxury. No cable TV, manicures or Starbux at this time!

My microphone volume is really low and has been for a long time, I figured I could install the latest drivers to see if it made a difference since I am just using whatever Windows 8 decided to install automatically. Sound is fine other than the microphone volume.

However when I downloaded the Realtek drivers via Gigabyte or the Realtek site itself, it extracts the installer and all just says "Setup.exe has stopped working".

I've tried just seeing if it'll start with compatibility mode but it's still the same, I do not already have any Realtek software installed other than the Ethernet drivers. I'm running Windows 8.1 x64, I've certainly downloaded the 64-bit drivers.

Edit: The microphone uses the audio jacks, not USB.

Would appreciate any advice.

However, something obviously has corrupted the windows update file(s). can someone suggest a fix. I have googled a fix but so far no results.

Then I noticed out of the 7 that were installed, both the security updates (Net Framework 3.5.1 and KB2667402) failed to work, and since then, I have not been able to get them to install correctly

What I've tried-v
-Disabling User Account Control.
-Disabling Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware (Avast! and Spyware Terminator).
-Downloading the update directly from the Microsoft Website using a different installer.
-Running Microsoft Fixit and then trying to install them again.
-Virus Scanning. Found one corrupted file which, when removed, did not change the issue.
-Running Checkdisc for errors. This also did not change the issue.

It is worth mentioning that Avast! Found and removed a Java:bitcoin-A [Trj.] a few days ago, it could possibly be related to this?

Never had a problem like this before with Windows Updates, so I'm really confused as to what I can do.

A:Repeating failure to install latest security updates.

It's possible that a virus or malware has changed your system and that is why the updates aren't working. Personally I would dump avast and the terminator, relace with MSE if your going free. You might want to check the your system files haven't been altered and are all present. Click start ---> run , then type cmd and hit enter. You will get the command prompt window. Type sfc /scannow and let that run, it will tell you and fix any missing corrupt, altered system files. If it fixes somthing retry the updates and let us know the result.

I just upgraded an old laptop from windows vista to windows 10 only to find out windows 10 doesn't support the motherboard which wouldn't allow it to recognize the graphics card, so I installed windows 7 ultimate only to get a BSOD. I'm not proficient with windows debuggers but from the dmp files it looks like rtl8187.sys is the issue but WU claims it is the most up to date driver, Idk what to do.

My computer has Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Everytime the computer tries to install the latest update, which is Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2833941), it fails (Error Code: 0x643). I tried to follow the fix-it steps from http://support.microsoft.com/gp/windows-update-issues/en-us, but when I tried to download and run "Fix This Problem" I couldn't open the file type (diagcab). I also tried method 2 but the update still didn't install after the restart.

Thank you for any help or advice.

A:latest update fails to install everytime

You mean method 2 from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982/ ?
This is the method...

Uninstall .NET Framework 1.1. Then download the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool and unzip and run.
From the drop-down box, select 1.1 and clean.
Reinstall .NET Framework 1.1
Download and install .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
Visit Windows Update or Microsoft Update and let it install the rest of the 1.1 updates including KB2833941.
Check if it's installs and report back.

Hi, new to the forum and I thank any in advance for entertaining this noob's dilemma. I purchased a HP desktop a couple of years ago with W8, upgraded to 8.1 and subsequently to 10. The computer has had no previous issues/problems, until the latest round of updates. I've searched this forum for similar problems, but what I've found don't quite match mine. I don't get a mouse cursor, no images or text of anykind, nothing...just black, and the monitor doesn't wake up.

Last week, what I suspect is the most recent update, prevented my monitor from displaying. I restart the monitor and get "No Signal" and it goes right to power save/sleep mode. I performed a number of "hard" shutdowns and restarts and I finally got my monitor to display. I went back to my restore point and didn't have any problems for the past week, until last night. I tried to prevent the update, but was unable to, Windows forced the update and now I cannot get anything on the monitor. I tried a couple of "hard" restarts/reboots like last week, tried the Ctrl key and password, CAD, Esc all to no avail. F8 key had no discernible effect, still no display.

Any help is appreciated.

I completed the latest Windows 10 cumulative update yesterday (the 14th of June). Everything seemed to go smoothly, the system rebooted, etc.

I have several external hard drives - one of which is where I keep all of the software downloads/updates. After this Windows 10 update, I am no longer able to install software of any nature. All I keep getting is this error message:

Looking at that error message I checked all of UAC, Firewall, and Anti Virus settings (AVG), and nothing in their settings is preventing me from installing software. I then did a reboot into safe mode and ran the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Tool which is an excellent piece of software. Even after this (which usually fixes most windows issues), the same issue remains. I cannot install any type of software.

As a last resort, I even assigned a new drive letter - changing it from H to S. But even then, I get the same error message.

I then checked all of my permissions - they're all good. Yet my system is now preventing me from installing or updating any software at all.

Any suggestions or fixes?

Thanks,

Ben Herrmann

I have tried internet research solutions to no avail. Finally had to come ask for help from you guys!

I uninstalled the previous Java update (jre-7u71-windows-i586.exe) I had on my laptop. Then tried to install the latest update (jre-8u31-windows-i586.exe). It would start to install, then I would get error code 1603.

I tried to reinstall the older update. It would not reinstall. Same error code 1603. I guess I am currently without Java.

That sums up the basic problem. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

As windows 10 has now had a major update, and I want to create a DVD with that update on it, without having to reinstall it later, as I have other partitions on my computer to update to 10 as well.
So my query is, does anyone know if I was to download windows 10 32 bit from Microsoft again (using the media creation tool from Microsoft) will it include the latest major update to 10?
Thanks for any help

Greetings!

I have Acer Aspire 5750G. My current BIOS version is 1.07. The latest version is 1.12.

There are a few versions in between. Should I do incremental updates and reach 1.12 or should I just go direct to 1.12?

Many Thanks!

A:BIOS - Incremental updates to latest vrsn or direct update to latest?

Bios updates are cumulative, so you only need the latest.

You also don't need to update the bios unless there is a fix in it/them that fixes an issue you may be having. For the most part updating the bios is as easy as updating a driver, only if a bios update goes wrong you can't roll back to the old and you basically end up with a nice paperweight.

I am unable to update the Kernel-mode driver framework ver 1.11 for windows 7 for x64-based systems (KB2685811). I get error: 80073712

I, again, apologize for double posting. I figure I should include the host of other issues I'm having. Maybe they can all be inter related.

-my DVD/RW drive, when connected to mother board in ANY SATA slot, causes the BIOS screen to freeze forever. I have disconnected the drive at this time while trouble shooting. I have tried known-good SATA cables so I know it's either the DVD/RW drive or perhaps a driver or mobo failure.

-I have run the memory diagnostic tool in windows. No issues were reported.

-I have NOT run memtest86 because I do not have a disk drive connected.

-I have had stop-errors (BSODS) such as PFN_list_corrupt, System_service_Exception, Memory_management, IRQ_not_less_or_Equal
All of these could be a result of bad RAM.

I have purchased new RAM as a means to fix my problems. It seemed to work for 2 weeks, then the stop errors returned.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

Hello All!

I'm new to the Insider Program and am currently running build 10565 on one laptop and 10240 RTM on another. Quick question about getting updates on Insider builds - do I get cumulative & security updates that are available for the RTM version on my insider build? Just did some updates to my RTM but noticed that some of the newest updates like KB3097617 don't show on my 10565 build.

I manually downloaded the latest updates from Microsoft Catalog but when I tried to install them it said they are not applicable. Is it because insider builds already come with these security updates built in?

Some of those updates are already included in the 10565 build so they are not offered.

So long story short i was continuously getting notification to install some particular updates again and again .

They were : KB2446704 , KB2418241 , KB2539631 . ( All of them are security updates for .net framework 2.0 sp2 and 3.5 sp1)

So whenever i installed them and restarted my pc they used to show up again . So today i decided to download Windows install clean up utility and uninstall and reinstall .net framework 2.0 sp2 .I uninstalled but when i tried to install it again i couldn't . It showed as a " setup error " .

Note :
Also i have an windows xp sp3 .

Retry the Update(s).3. If the Update(s) fail(s), proceed to Step 4.4. Download .Net Cleanup Utility: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx5. By using the Cleanup Tool, uninstall all .Net Framework entries. (You will not be allowed to remove the .NET Framework 2.0 on Vista and 3.5 on Windows 7 because they are Operating System components.)6. Reboot.7. Download and install the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 by clicking the link below (this will also install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2):http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en8. I'm still not certain if the new builds that come out,( eg 10586.36, and now 10586.63) also contain

I've noticed that my Windows 10 PC (which had 10 installed from new, it is NOT an upgrade) has the latest build

As mentioned above, my XP OS won't allow me to update my security and system checking software anymore. I've tried in safe mode and won't work. I also get "Program_Error_Updating(12007,0,win Http SendRequest)" messages.

Please find attached my GMER log and TM scan log (I couldn't get the DDS scan to run properly despite turning off Avast scrip shield). Not sure if its my new Draytek modem or PC blocking updates.

Regards,

Steven Ditton

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a Toshiba laptop. Have both MS SecurityEssentials and Malwarebytes Pro installed and have had no problems with either for years. Within this past week I was checking to see if a couple of MS updates had been installed and notices in my Update History section that Security Essentials had failed to install it's daily definitions update since March 26th. I don't know of any particular even that has occurred on my system to have stopped these definitions from installing. Security Essentials will run it's regularly daily check at around 7AM with no problem - but it's not getting the definition update prior to performing this scheduled check.I attempted to "force" the definition update within Security Essentials itself by going to the Update tab but when I do that - the installation progress bar stops at about a third and goes no further. I can only accomplish the definition update if I get it from this sourcehttps://www.microsoft.com/security/...459594)(TnL5HPStwNw-LsDDoPL8TH48b7ISKFcrqA)()where you can download the proper definitions for a 64 bit system.I realized while trying to work this problem, that I had not been able to download or install any MS windows updates that had become available this week. (I have my system set to notify me when updates are available but not to download or install). There were a couple I wanted to download and install and I am unable to get these to download. I know that everyone is experiencing long wait times these... Read more

When unexpected issues arise with anti-virus software, I generally recommend a reinstall which resolves most problems. Have you tried reinstalling MSE?

Hi There, Hope you can help.

Recently I have been unable to update or download new security programs. It keeps coming up with 1) a message saying there is a problem with the download, or 2) when I try to do manually then it comes up with a windows error message window 'cannot connect to internet' with 'check .....', even though internet is running and I can easily go to various pages.

I am with McAfee, and no response from their support team, and have tried to download other programs the outcome as above..

Here are my logs for your consideration please.

Hi. I don't know what has happened but my pc is running strangely recently. For example, I can't install the visual c redistributable (vcredist.exe), or directx 9.0c, and some games don't work which did a while ago - now they crash to the desktop. I haven't got a restore which fixes the problem. It is all a bit strange.
I've got windows 7 64 bit on a Dell vostro - i7 860, 4g ram etc.
I've tried microsoft security essentials, all manner of spyware removers including spyware search & destroy to no avail.
What should be the next step in investigating this?
Thanks for any help!

Microsoft Windows 7 already has DirectX 11, so installing version 9 will always fail and is useless. It also has VC++ redistributable 2005 and 2008. The latest version which is not included on Windows 7 is VC++ 2010 redistributables which you should install (but very few games are designed in VC++ 2010 today). When games fail, they create a crash report or log. You should go through them and try to find the possible cause. What message do games show when crashing?Check Event Viewer to find the possible cause of crashing of a game.

Today we issued our Advanced Notification Service (ANS) to advise customers that we will be releasing security update MS10-018 tomorrow, March 30, 2010, at approximately10:00 a.m. PDT (UTC-8). MS10-018 resolves Security Advisory 981374, addressing a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7. Internet Explorer 8 is unaffected by the vulnerability addressed in the advisory and we continue to encourage all customers to upgrade to this version to benefit from the improved security protection it offers.

Please see below:

I have been trying for over more than a week to install this update without luck, like so many others it seems!
At the weekend it completely crashed my machine and I couldn't start Windows at all but I was saved by a Reflect image backup.
Now when it downloads the update it winds it back on startup.
I have been trying to follow guidance on the issue but with no luck and now not sure what I have or haven't done!
The machine is a recent rebuild from scratch, free from nasties and sfc reveals no file issues.
I have a second machine of a similar build and that updated without problem.
Can someone please provide me with some structured help.
I don't seem to be getting automatic notifications when I post on this site, any thoughts to resolve that so that I know when a response has been provided? I will keep coming back to check.
Thanks
Paul
PS just ran the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic tool and got the following but not sure if it's relevant:

There is a cumulative Windows update that appears in each monthly set of updates and if I don't catch it in time it prevents three different Windows 10 systems in my house from booting and I have to use True Image to restore. This has been going on for about 5 months now and I know there are a lot of folks with the same problem. You'd think Microsoft would pull or fix the update. At least two of the systems are are W10 Professional or Ultimate so I've just used gpedit to stop automatic updates (you'd think I would have done this earlier), but the other system isn't and I have to remember to create the images and/or hide the update on the day it comes out. What a Pain!!!Just using the forum to rant

A:Cumulative Update a Real Pain

I really dont understand Microsoft these days:Pushy for people to 10 even when people go through measures to avoid it, and then now to hear that they are even pushing updates that are unwanted once your onto 10 which break systems. WOW.Patio suggested that he has set his updates to notify vs auto for his system(s). I am going to do this for all my systems now. It might be the fix to your problem here too. My situation is that systems on 7, Microsoft is trying to force to 10 and I dont want 10. I have one computer that I took the free Windows 10 upgrade on from 7. And that system is in my closet for someday when I need 10 for some reason I will have a system on 10 and not miss out of the free upgrade. But other systems I want to remain on 7. Some of which clearly do not support 10 due to age of a single-core laptop for example where the Intel Chipset was lucky enough to have Windows 7 driver for integrated video, but of which there is no Windows 10 driver for the GPU so it fails to upgrade to 10. Others I know have have their computers turn into a brick when taking free upgrade and then the system is stuck in a boot loop because there was a malfunction with a driver or something else causing a crash condition boot loop etc.I ended up cloning the drive in my one highly configured Windows 7 system so that if Microsoft somehow tries again to forcefully upgrade me to 10, i should be able to clone the cloned drive back to the master drive. I have the drive that is cloned inside the... Read more
