Q: 'Boom year' for hi-tech criminals

'Boom year' for hi-tech criminals.

Sophos said it was now seeing more than 20,000 new malicious programs every day. 2008 was also the year in which Symantec revealed that its anti-virus software now protected against more than one million viruses.

The vast majority of these malicious programs are aimed at Windows PCs. Viruses made their debut more than 20 years ago but the vast majority of that million plus total have been created in the last two-three years.

Looking confused, he thinks for a second, the just starts typing "calculator" on the Desktop. After that doesn't work, he starts clicking around until he accidentally grabs the top of the screen and pins it on the side. He then clicks in the empty space and makes it to the Start screen. Then, he looks for calculator in my pinned things, and after no success, he then types "calculator" again and successfully opens the program. His first comments "well, it will take some getting use to, but it's no big deal." I then show him how the Start button actually is there, just hidden. He affirms that yeah it's no big deal, just will take some getting used to.

Later, he was watching me use my PC, and I downloaded the Wikipedia app and pinned it. After that, I put down the computer and played some Xbox with him beside me. He's very interested in history, so he picks up the computer, and goes into the Wikipedia app. He asks me how to search in the app, and I showed him how to use Charms. After that, he was using it as if he had his whole life. He searches some Wikipedia, then when he can't find what he wanted there, he goes back to Start (using the hidden button) and hit the IE icon (which sends him to the desktop) and uses it to search and find things. I show him how he could bring up the recent apps menu to quickly go back to Wikipedia, an... Read more

Ok, my dad is pretty sharp.  Loves his window's 7, Excel and Word wiz.  Gets on the internet and becomes  a total newbie.
This time...calls me to say, " I paid a company $250.00 to "fix' my computer which started flashing the screen, and the speaker was making an alarm sound.  I called the number which popped up on the screen, and a kind man helped me stop the flashing, and the alarm, he took over my computer and it all stopped"
He then gave the tech support his credit card and was charged $250.00 for a "annual service subscription".
Step 1 - I called the Credit card company and reported the fraud, had the  charged dismissed, and the account closed, new card issued.
Step 2 - unplugged his desktop from the cable modem, and took the box home with with
Step 3 -  contacted Bleeping computer

Step what?  Was he infected?  did this company really "take over" his computer?   I'm not   getting great answers from "Dad", because he was so flustered by the whole experience, and pretty embarrassed about getting scammed.
Do these unscrupulous  tech support scammers actually drop a virus on a computer, and if so have others had this experience?

Growing popularity for Windows 10 has offered a tailormade Windows 10 activators scam for cybercriminals
Microsoft has given the opportunity to its user to join the Windows Insider Program so as to develop its new version of Windows 10 which can be user friendly and as well as technically efficient. Users who have joined this Technical Preview are constantly on the radar of these cyber-criminals.
Cyber-criminals are using YouTube by posting lots of fake windows 10 “activators” videos. If user activates this fake activator they would be directed to some illicit survey websites which may be a source of generating finance to these criminals. The website might lead users to click unwanted hidden ads and thus make illicit gains for the scam operators.
Some of these Windows 10 “activators” can lead the user to download unwanted applications which can lead to PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and viruses. Some of the sites may even lead users to indefinite surveys in the name of downloading the Windows new version.

Is there a way to save to ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \ currentyear

I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread:

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My computer was working fine. I went to check my mail. I received some Netflix movies, one of which I was going to watch. I press the button to open my DVD drive and the computer shuts down before the drive finishes opening.

It won't turn on. When I took out the BIOS battery and then put it in a minute later, the fans spun up for about 1/4 second. Pressing the power button after that has nothing happen. The LED on the motherboard is glowing.

Motherboard: ASUS p5n-e sli

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

In services, ensure these are running

Bonjour Service ( mDNSResponder)
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness

Ok, so I was bumming around the house this afternoon when I hear a voice from downstairs, my father sounds quite distressed and hollars something about a "screen he'd never seen before" well...

I arrive to the predicted blue screen of death on my main home PC (Windows XP Pro SP 2) and figured it was another hardware tick or the CPU overheating (fans not doing so great lately) but when I restarted and it booted its way past the BIOS I saw something that made me clench something terrible... "Error Loading Operating System"

Lads and ladies, the water here is getting too deep, my skills are now out of their league, and this may be as much a hardware problem as problem with my OS... I havn't the foggiest idea.

I tried doing a windows XP fix using the install CD like I have on previous occasions but I get as far as chosing where to install (or in this case fix) over a previous existing operating system but what I find is that it tells me C drive is either an unrecognizable file format, a corrupt file format, or there is too little space left. I obviously can't format it because of the contents, but there is no way that I know of to fix windows either.

Now I really start feeling like an idiot because my father stores copious amounts of huge images (professional photographer) and both of my hard drives (C: 80gb, and N:120gb) are about 90% full.

My problem...

Sunday afternoon, it appears that cable modem is functioning incorrectly as internet is WAY slow(worse than when we had dialup) and cable activity light is blinking very slowly. We reset the modem and lose all connectivity. Then we reset everything from the bottom up. Still no go. Connected modem directly to computer and was able to access internet. Well...that part's good, I guess! Appears to be a router problem. (router has 2 yrs and 1-1/2 months of usage.) Fiddle with the router for a while and still nothing works through it. Finally dug out old Belkin wired router. Finally able to get all
machines back on the internet (it still took some effort though), but there's no networking between the machines. Nothing has changed from before when they all played nicely! Each machine is seeing only itself. They are all in the same workgroup with good ips.
1 machine has XP pro and the other 3 have XP home. All 4 have ALL updates installed.
Wireless router is a USR8054 and wired router is a Belkin.

I'm lost right now. The brain has quit functioning too, I guess! I need some help!!!

What should I do?!

When I turned my computer back on, just before windows would normally start up, it goes to the screen that gives me the option to 'GO INTO SAFE MODE"..... "START WINDOWS NORMALLY"... etc.,,,, IT'S IN BLACK AND WHITE... NOT THE BLUE SCREEN

No matter what choice I use, the computer ends up rebooting itself and coming back to this screen.

A friend said it probably damaged the boot files.

Anyone know how I can get this to work again? I did a backup 2 months ago. However, I just got back from a wedding last weekend and have a whack of crap I need to recover (I hope???).

Stuck on last known configuration screen

If you have a Full Operating System on CD then you can try this:

1. Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.
2. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
3. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
4. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console.
6. When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER (if none was set, leave it blank and press ENTER).
7. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /list, and then press ENTER. The entries in your current Boot.ini file appear on the screen.
8. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. This command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT installations, and then displays the results. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to add the Windows installations to the Boot.ini file. For example, follow these steps to add a Windows XP installation to the Boot.ini file:

Hello i have a subwoofer which is connected with my set of speakers

My question is how do i make the subwoofer louder without actually turning the speakers volume up?

I have set my bass on the subwoofer at its higher but you can't really hear it since i almost always have it turned down cause i don't like playing games or anything loud heh

So how could i do this?

A:How to make the boom go booooom! ?

The subwoofer is usually supplied from a signal which is also used by the main speakers, but if filtered to remove the high frequencies.

So, without significant volume going to the main speakers, there simply is no signal available to give volume to the subwoofer.

You would need to redesign the electronics to make a separate feed for the subwofer, and probably have its own discrete amplifier, totally divorced from the main stereo amplifier.

Many PC mic inputs have a boost option to bring up the volume level of the mic input. Check the users PC to see if that is available. May not need a new mic. Unless the Microsoft mic is defective another PC mic won't make a difference. If its that bad, a regular P.A. type mic and a preamp will be needed.

Well, I finally managed to test the limits of a 250 watt supply, and I can say without reservation that it's not sufficient for an AMD XP 1700+ system with three hard disks, two optical drives, and five expansion boards! I had the system running in an old box for about an hour, then turned it off to add the last expansion board. When I turned it back on, I got a warbling tone that was telling me it didn't like the power supply. After several attempts to power up, I tuned if off and went looking for a replacement P/S in my closet. Suddenly, there was a sound like a pistol shot!!! I raced back out to see what happened, and I could smell burned electronics, boy was I sick! I carefully looked over the new MB, but no evidence of anything wrong. I sniffed the P/S, and it seemed to be coming from that, much better than taking out my new MB/processor.

It's much happier with a 450 watt supply.

A:Overclocking my video card without it going BOOM!

You could oc the card. You'd get some improvement in performance. It is somewhat dangerous and it voids your warranty. You have to be sure to have good cooling so it doesn't overheat and fry. If you overclock doing the coolbits registry hack(run regedit , go to hkey local machine/software/nvidia corp/global/nvtweak/ and right click an empty space on the white box. Create a new dword named coolbits. Then modify that entry and give it a hexadecimal value of 3. Then close regedit.) Then when you open up graphics properties and click settings, then advanced, then click 5700le and on the left pane there should be a clock frequency setting link, click it and then you can change the core and memory speeds. You can "detect optimal frequencies" or do it manually. Test your changes(there's a button to press) and go in small steps(in manual mode)Click to expand...

Just remember small steps, check your temps, benchmark it at the different steps to check performance and to look for artifacts.

The red laser light under the mouse is blinking very fast, but is barely visible, its very dim.

When I press the Connect button under the mouse, the laser light blinks normally for a couple of sec, during wich the mose moves by itself on the screen to the left by a couple centimeters in a choppy way, moves, stops, moves, etc and the left/right click buttons work

after those couple of seconds, it stops responding completely and the laser light starts flashing very fast again, and again its barely visible..

I tried replacing the batteries with both rechargeable and alcalines, but again, nothing there.

Tried both connect buttons on mouse and receiver and then again, nothing.

My receiver is at the same spot for about 5 months now, so I dont think its because of some interferences with other stuff

So, I checked the Event Viewer and found a few Red and Yellow exclamations with the following informations.

Also a few days ago Tune Up Utilities found that Sentinel64 driver was not found and Windows might crash for this reason. In the device manger I checked Show Hidden Devices and under the Non Plug and Play drivers I saw an exclamation near the Sentinel64 driver and I uninstalled it, thinking that windows might install it back at the next restart, but apparently it didn't.

Please help me if you have some free time.

System specs are Proc Core i7, Mem 12 Gig, GPU ATi 4870 CrossFire, PSU 1100W Tagan,

and extra stuffs connected to the PC are a Wacom tablet and an XBox 360 controller.

Don't listen to Tuneup Utilities, it just causes problems and isn't recommended by anyone. I'll remove that program immediately when you get the chance.

Sentinel64.sys isn't a Windows file, it's a third-party driver, so I don't understand where Tuneup got their information that Windows wouldn't boot without it?

Specifically, it belongs to Rainbow Tech/SafeNet USB Security Device. Here's their support page - Technical Support - Drivers and Developer Kits

If I am watching a Youtube video in a web browser (doesn't seem to matter which) and then switch to a video in VLC or Win Media Player, the sound from the new source doesn't play on the speakers. I have to power the speaker off and then back on and then it will pick up the new audio.

When I had a USB speaker the source-audio switched without any problem. Are there any settings that I can update, or should I just accept that a bluetooth speaker was a terrible idea for Win7?

A:Bluetooth speakers (UE Mini Boom) don't switch to new audio source

Youtube uses the Adobe Flash Player. VLC/WMP or whatever media player does not and thus different audio source. One thing to check, that may or may not make a difference, is if you have Stereo Mix set as the default recording device. This can affect sound playback. Stereo Mix is found in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel, Recording section.

This is very strange. When I right click in Word to paste, the computer crashes. I just cloned a copy from one in the office. The hard drive is brand spanking new. Any ideas? The power supply doesn't pause when it crashes. Could it be the mobo?

The computer I cloned does not have any problem.

A:right click in Word boom crash (thing's that you make you say...humhhh)

Does it crash whenever you right-click? Only when you're in Word? Only when you have something on the clipboard? Does Paste work from the Edit menu when you have something to paste? How about the shortcut for paste, Ctrl + V? Do any error messages show up, do you get the blue screen of death, or does it go straight to the warm reboot screen?

I have a dual-boot machine running Windows XP and Linux Mint 8. I use XP most of the time but I am using Linux now due to my problem. This machine uses some variation of the Grub Bootloader for the dual-boot setup.

On XP last night I downloaded, installed and ran Process Monitor. XP appeared to lock up immediately and I have been unable to boot into any Windows mode since.

After the initial XP lock-up I couldn't do anything so I turned off the power and turned it on again. I hit the start button and when the abnormal shut-down screen came up, I clicked on start normally. I saw a flash of a blue screen with some text on it and then the computer rebooted.

I have tried booting into Safe Mode, and into Last working configuration with the same end result.

The machine works fine booting into Linux Mint and I have access to my Windows and program files, I expect, all other files on “C” drive.

Any recommendations? All help would be appreciated.
NOTE: I do have a back-up image, however, I am not at my residence and so do not have access to my recovery CDs.

A:Run Process Monitor Once and "BOOM!" No Windows XP???

Hi, Process Monitor is a trusted program and useful to see what may be
using too many processes.
I use it myself and it has never caused a problem.

What is stopping Xp from starting, who can say!
If you can, use Linux Mint to save all needed data - and then reinstall Xp.

Hello form, this is my first question. I'm thinking of getting myself and my daughter a new computer later this year. But I heard that next year or maybe even late this year, Microsoft will come out with a whole new OS called longhorn. Should I wait until after this new OS comes out, because I'm afraid that if I buy a new PC this year, it will be out dated as soon as longhorn comes out. Have any of you heard about when this new OS system will come out, and is it worth me just waiting until then to buy a new PC? Thanks again for your time..

A:Should I get a new pc this year

PC and OS are 2 different things - An XP system will be fine for a long time

You don't want a new OS for at least 5 months after release

What do you have now - Model/Make - speed -memory- OS

My mom's 10+ year old computer died the other day. The light indicator for the PSU lights up but the computer doesn't do anything. When I took a look inside I saw the processor fan was just caked with gunk, dust, etc. It looked like somebody threw mud at it.

Anyways, she has this stuff on her HDD that she was wanting to retrieve. I thought I could just take the HDD out of her computer and hook it into mine and get whatever data she wanted that way and burn it to disc. Is that possible? Or is there another way? My computer is a year old, btw, and runs Windows 7 Home Premium. Her computer was running windows xp sp2.

I don't know what other information to provide for a response right now.

It would be a fairly simple thing to do. Due to the age, I assume it is a PATA drive, or IDE connection as it is referred te.

Never heard of an @ key, or the ALT, etc. So I'm gonna spend the rest of my life at his house if I don't figure out how to unclutter his pc experience. He bought a brand new Dell desktop with Windows 7, from Walmart, and I installed it and got his DSL connection up and running. And now he calls me every few minutes, asking how to deal with the new screens and "flags" (whatever those are) that are popping up. How can I get rid of all Pop-ups, Ads, software update messages, alerts, "flags" etc? I don't really care if he gets all possible updates. I will be sure to save a restore point, or back up and image of it with my Laplink software. If you can recommend software for this, he will gladly pay for it. Money really is not the issue. My time is!!! Heck, I will pay for the stinkin software myself if I have to. Please let me know how I can make this thing run as clean and simply as possible, without all of the interruptions from pop-ups and such. Thanks a bunch!!! John

It was about this time last year that I my machine came down with a malware problem when I downloaded a CD crack to game (yes, I owned but didn't want to have the CD in the drive everytime I played it) and foolishly forgot to scan it with the antivirus.

A few days ago I downloaded a video on modding one's cell phone and in Windows Media Player was asked if I could install a codec called Aquaplayer. This was a mistake (must start listening to those nagging voices in my head). Now I have my floppy drive (yes, I still use one) being accessed every minute, can't get to certain hard drives in explorer - have to type in the letter and colon in the address bar to get there, and have noticed that A Squared, Ad Aware, and AVG can't access their update sites anymore. Add to this the a general slowing down of performance and I'm certain I'm infected.

So, as per the sticky thread, here's the DDS report:

Hello everyone
So this topic is mainly related to firewalls, but i'll post it here as it's also about AV and general internet security.
After one year of McAfee and many years of ignorance, i started to learn more about how to correctly use a PC. I've learnt a lot, i'm not an IT genius (yet ), so i do want something...different from the McAfee i've been using so far but not too complicated to use. I've heard the best protection could achieved with a Bitdefender antivirus next to a Comodo firewall. I also do know the latter has to be configured properly, and while i do understand all of Comodo's instructions, custom rules about this and that port and protocol are a little bit beyond my understanding... and having to create custom rules to make it work would be a problem. So i'm left with two options (paying isn't a problem) :
A - Comodo's firewall will work fine without setting custom rules and sticking to proper use of preset settings is enough to make it work, in which case it'll be Bitdefendr AV + Comodo FW
or B - Comodo won't work without good understanding of rules, and i need something a bit more "install & forget", like Kaspersky
And would option A give significantly more protection than option B ?

A:After one year of McAfee...

Hello there,From what I've heard, Comodo Firewall is a HIPS firewall (Host Intrusion Prevention System), which can cause a LOT of alerts (I've used another HIPS firewall before - Emsisoft Online Armor - so I'm not joking). If you are not confident in your ability to tell what should be allowed or blocked, I do not recommend using HIPS firewalls in general. No security solutions will ever give 100% foolproof security - not without common sense at least. Please read this: Simple ways to keep your computer secure and safe onlineAlso a third-party firewall is unnecessary for most users. Assuming that you are using Windows Vista and later, the Windows Firewall should be adequate protection for normal surfing. That being said, do you still want to stay with BitDefender? Or do you wish to switch to another AV?Regards,Alex

oh, sorry, that should read ...

"Getting punked by 9-year-old parameter."

A security researcher has unearthed a ?bizarre? flaw in Apple's QuickTime Player that can be exploited to remotely execute malicious code on Windows-based PCs, even those running the most recent versions of operating system.

Technically, the inclusion of an unused parameter known as ?_Marshaled_pUnk? is a backdoor because it is the work of an Apple developer who added it to to the QuickTime code base and then, most likely, forgot to remove it when it was no longer needed.

It sat largely undetected for at least nine years until Ruben Santamarta of Spain-based security firm Wintercore discovered it and realized it could be exploited to take full control of machines running Windows 7, Microsoft's most secure operating system to date.

BBC News - Microsoft fixes '19-year-old' bug with emergency patch
I've looked around some and can find no hint of Microsoft patching this bug in XP. If you are an XP
user and have checked for updates, please comment if the patch is being offered or not.
......Microsoft has patched a critical bug in its software that had existed for 19 years.
IBM researchers discovered the flaw, which affects Windows and Office products, in May this year - but worked with Microsoft to fix the problem before going public.
The bug had been present in every version of Windows since 95, IBM said.
Attackers could exploit the bug to remotely control a PC, and so users are being urged to download updates.
Microsoft has addressed the problem in its monthly security update - releasing 14 patches, with two more expected to be rolled out soon.
In a blog post explaining the vulnerability in depth, IBM researcher Robert Freeman wrote: "The bug can be used by an attacker for drive-by attacks to reliably run code remotely and take over the user's machine."....
Go to the BBC News linked article above to read more about this bug and its implications for unpatched Windows OS.

A:It's that time of year again...

You should install the spyware prevention programs next time. So make sure you install it when we are done with this. We will provide a link for you to get them.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click... Read more

I need to repeat this process for as long as I stay online or web pages will not load. I use AOL ( I know, I know) with a dial up modem (high tech) but surf the web with Netscape 7.2. My computer may be old, but I don't have the $$$ to buy a better one and I am technically challenged (as if you don't know by now) so if anyone can point me in the right direction to fix this, I will name my first born after you...

Recently I did a post on how I fix a graphics card with a bad fan.

Today I'm talking about how I refurbished a ten year old Desktop PC, that had gotten all rusty and corroded and the motherboard failed. I'm sure some would just toss it in the trash and forget it. But I'm not built like that.

So first off, I had to strip the case down to it's bare steel frame.
Then I cleaned off all the rust and corrosion with a high speed wire brush.
Then came the new paint. A few shots from a Rattle Can did the job nicely.
The new paint almost exactly matched the original factory paint (ten years ago).

Then I had to reinstall the top panel and Face Plate. and install the new motherboard, a Gigabyte 970A-DS3P,
along with the new AMD, 6 Core CPU and 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
Finally, after setting up the CMOS, I installed Windows 8.1, Pro, 32.

The end product: A great looking and great running PC, done on a budget. For less than a $200 outlay, I have a beautiful new PC.

Can you figure out, why it's called a Pac Man case?
It's been my favorite type of case for ten years now.

WELL, now back to programming my newest PC.

Happy Holidays, Mates!

I'm going to be installing a computer downstairs in my sons room(I know not the best place). My mother in law also lives down there so it's not like he'll be totally alone and she will need access to the computer also. So the question is.....
1. What is the best way to set up the internet for him to use? I would like only allow a few sites of my choice like webkins, pbs, playhouse disney and sites like that. So am I looking for software to do this or can this be set up thru IE itself?
2. If possible I'd like to have it accessible for my mother in law also. Mabey having to enter a password to open up full access to the net when she needs it.

Any ideas and or suggestions would be awesome!! I thank you for your help and Happy Holidays!!!

I wonder if Win7 SP1 next year will be the last retailed edition for sale in the market or not. I remember the final boxed version of XP is SP2 and the OEM version is SP3. However Vista Boxed and OEM disc only got SP1 and customers must download SP2 from the Internet themselves !!

I ask this question is because I like to collect and keep the lastest boxed version and oem version of a Windows. So now, I have Vista SP1 OEM and Vista SP1 Boxed Edition. XP SP2 Boxed EDition and XP SP3 OEM edition.

I didn't buy Vista SP1 until I confirmed that there won't be Vista SP2 for sale in the market.

I have an Acer Aspire 3100 that I got for Christmas in late 2006. I'm still using it to this day with Windows 7 as it came with Windows XP. However, the 60GB HDD it came with is starting to give me trouble so I was thinking about upgrading to an SSD.

Would this be possible with my laptop? I'm not entirely sure of the HDD connection but I believe it may be IDE. If this is the case, then will I need to get some kind of SATA to IDE adapter to use an SSD, or do they possibly make SSD's that can fit my laptop? I can only hope that I am not out of luck when it comes to upgrading the sustainability of my old and faithful mobile computing device.

Thank you for the helpful, yet knowledgeable replies.

A:SSD on 5 year old laptop?

The Aspire 3100 appears to use a 2.5" ATA100 (PATA) drive.

As far as I know, SSDs in that form factor are SATA.

While SATA to IDE adapters appear to exist, I'd be surprised if one would fit in a laptop. (I haven't checked for the 3100, but it may include a proprietary mounting adapter, that would have to be transferred to a replacement HD.) Can't swear that it's impossible.

A quick look at shows a couple of 2.5" PATA 5400 RPM replacement drives, so at least you can keep the old laptop alive.

I've been battling my machine blue screening on a 1-3 day basis for a year now and I've finally had it.  Previously it wasn't a big deal because I primarily used my machine for streaming and minor gaming but I've been using it a lot more lately so either the problem has to go or the PC has to go.
What normally happens is the machine will kind of lock up - I can still drill down through start menu but any applications I have open are frozen solid and go into a Not Responding state and eventually the machine will blue screen.  Now here's the kicker, if the machine blue screens I have to load my default BIOS settings and then reset the storage back to AHCI & RAID otherwise the machine will not boot into Windows.  If I turn off the machine while it's 'locked up' but no BSOD, I do not have to do that.
I've also sent both of my SSD's back to OCZ and they tested each and both are fine.  I've also gotten rid of the raid and ran the OS on each SSD individually and the machine still crashes.
Lastly, I went in 2 days ago and updated every driver I could find and my most recent crash was an hour or so ago.

Hey Guys. I have had my pc around a year now i built it myself and put 2 X 512MB DDR400 PC3200 Elixir brand Ram in my machine. It has showed up as 1GB for the whole time iv had irt but all of a sudden today i noticed that it says theres only 512MB installed so i unplugged my ram modules then swapped them round into different dimms. and still it sayd 512mb ram. so i installed PC wizard 2006 and ran a diagnostic and it says theres a 512MB module in DIMM 2 but dimm 1 is empty so i then tried Both 512mb Modules in DIMM 1 and they both worked fine. Both of the modules seem to be fine its just all of a sudden they wont run together. my motherboard is a MSI KT6V-LSR it only has 2 DIMM slots. can anyone please shed some light into my problem i have tried just about everything i can think of. thanx much appreciated

A:Problem with my RAM after having it for a year.

I would go to and build a bootable floppy. Put one module at a time in DIMM 1 make sure it is recognized in BIOS and run memtest for a couple of hours. Test each module the same way and see if you have a module that is failing.

I am a user of windows 8.1. I have already reserved windows 10. We all know that windows 10 is going to release soon. What I have heared is that win 10 is free for 1 year. So I am little bit confused that if I ugrade to win 10 now so after 1 year of use I have to pay for it or not?

A:Do I have to pay for windows 10 after one year of use?

No. It doesn't mean it's free only for 1 year. It means that you have 1 year to claim your free copy. You can do the upgrade now or later but if you do it after 29 July 2016 you'll have to buy it so take your time and decide if you want it now. It's not the bad idea to wait 2-3 months while they fix some bugs etc.

I bought this computer and had it custom made from a store early last year and since then i've had a persistent problem with the pc closing down or shutting down randomly when i've been working on programs or gaming. I've took the pc back to the guy close to a dozen times and they keep testing the pc on stress tests and they tell me each time it's totally fine and give it me back. I've had enough of this pc shutting down.

Most of the time it will close down when you open multiple windows or two different programs ie. (World of warcraft and google). Sometimes it will close down and my moniter will shut down but i'm still able to hear sound through my speakers ie (Still speaking live on ventrilo). It's almost like my pc can not handle too much going on at one time.

Are you able to give me some solutions that i've not already heard. And are you also able to give me some programs so I can upload all my pc specs to you guys and you can get a better idea of this problem.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: I believe maybe this has a big deal to do with my moniter but i'm not sure. I've tried different ones with no sucess

First thing to do is determine the Brand and wattage of the Power Supply. You will have to open the case and look at it to do that.

It should have a sticker on it that looks like this:

You can download and run the Belarc Advisor to find the details of the hardware. If you post it here, post only the top half that lists all the hardware . . do not post the bottom half that shows your Product Keys.

Please give me the cost on a buy back on my XPS 8500, I would like to use windows 10 and this pc is not supported.

A:Buy Back on a 3 year old pc

The 8500 WILL upgrade to Win 10. Check the Web for successes. The major reason Dell will not support many 3 years or so older computers is because the hardware supplies, such as WiFi card manufacturers, will not supply drivers for Win 10. The upgrade installs working "generic" drivers for any hardware item that doesn't have a compatible drivers. If there are any issues after the upgrade, you can search for newer drivers. Many Win 8.1 drivers will work. The Web search will alert you to any problems others have had. If you look at my Sig, you will see three Dells, 8,9, and 10 years old that have successfully upgraded and work fine. I even have video drivers that support all the features of the video cards.
Post back if you have any issues that you can't solve.

I have been getting BSOD since I last posted which was probably about 10 months ago. I built this more than a year ago. I'm hoping by now some of you might be able to tell me exactly what the problem is. It's driving me nuts! I can't figure it out! I've tested the RAM using stress tests and it runs just fine. I've wiggled the GFX card and I don't think it's that. I can play games sometimes fine, other times I get a BSOD. A faulty hard drive wouldn't be giving me these errors would it? Attached are two separate dumps (copied and pasted into notepad). Please help!

I would be raising the GFX card as the likely suspect. I have had a similar issue and although testing said the GFX card was fine,I put another in and no more issues. Very frustrating to NOT be able to prove a suspected fault ,especially when your gut keeps saying a particular item may be faulty. I have found that a few low-end cards supposedly rated for Vista are very problematic. Wish I could have been of more help ,mate..but often we need the actual PC to run our tests etc. as it's extremely hard to diagnose properly via a forum. If you think it is not the GFX card,it may be that you need to go talk to a tech in your area.

Whats up people??

Im looking for a little advice for upgrades. Ive spent months looking at stuff (mainly newegg) and am just trying to get a feel for what upgrades i need.

Currently i have:
XP home
AMD XP2000+ Stock cooling
MSI KT3 Ultra Mobo
Geforce Fx5700LE 256mb (agp)
1gb kingston SDram ddr333 lat:2.5
60gb HD
80GB HD (linux) Dual boot SUse 10
2 x lite-on CD-RW
Thermaltake 430w Power Supply

I old. I want to upgrade to an AMD 64 bit 3800 single core. Are they stable? Ive heard great things about the 3200 but i want that little bit of extra in the PC.

A new shiny processor needs a new MoBo: Any particular brand stand out above all the rest. I used to have a Soyo but i dont see them around anymore. My MSI runs great, only issue was the dumb chip set fan but i replaced that with a fanless heat sink so its fine.

Im not currently looking at SLI beacuse i dont have the money for two cards and single mobos are cheaper...however i noticed that to get newer/fancy features on the mobo you have to get SLI.

And Finally, Im looking for a Video Card. Amazingly enough i can play BF2, only at the low defaults...but i can!!! Ive kinda fallen out of touch with what video cards are the best and which to buy. Ive always had Geforce Chips (original first comp and a GF4 mx420 64mb) I dont mind spending about $200 on the new card, just so long as its stable, cool, and will stay with the gameing curve for a few years.

Ive looked at the Radeon X1800 and the ... Read more

A:4 year old PC needs upgrades

Here're some parts I like.

Abit AN8 SLI motherboard (yeah you said you didn't want sli, but this one is still pretty cheap). I see that you like "silent computing" so this should be a nice fit, since it has a fanless/heatpipe cooling unit on the chipset.

Amd a64 3500+, nice bang for the buck.

Gigabyte Silent 7600gt Pci-e. Fast, and it's quiet too.

I'd recommend either getting a 1GB or 2GB kit of memory, so you get a matched pair of memory to use in dual channel mode, which is somewhat faster. Lower cas is better, look for cas 2 or 2.5.

I guess scythe is ok, haven't heard anything bad about them.

Might want to consider power supplies as well, I like antec, fsp group, ocz, enermax, seasonic, etc. Some newer antecs have two fans, but only use one fan if the temp is cool, which makes it quieter.

I got my first PC in 2001 with MSN as my dial up service provider. I only used my password once to log in. It was "remembered" for the next 12 years.

I finally entered the 21st century with a new laptop in 2013, with Time Warner as my new service provider.

All of my stored e-mails transferred over to my new laptop, and I never needed a password to sign into the internet. Only my name and then "welcome" appeared on the screen and I was instantly signed in.

I learned this week that it will take 4 to 6 weeks to wait for a new cooling fan for my laptop, so I was forced to buy a 2nd laptop as a backup.

For some reason, however, the transition was not as smooth this time. Instead of my name, the word "User" appeared on the screen, but I was still able to sign on to the net without a password.

This time, however, I had to look up my 12 year old microsoft password and sign in to this ancient microsoft account to access my e-mails.

Furthermore, I now need to use this 12 year old password to sign on to the internet, where my name and my e-mail address are displayed on the screen. My password is not "remembered".

Why was the transition smooth and seamless when I went from my first computer to my laptop, but I now needed to access an old microsoft account to get e-mail service and to sign in on the newer laptop?
Why won't this new laptop remember my password?

Thanks in advance,

A:Why do I need 12 year old password on new PC?

Depending upon what browser you're using, there are built in Password Managers. Also there are 3rd party versions of them. It's better that your E-mail is more secure rather than a little inconvenience.

Good evening everyone. My Dell Windows XP, SP3 has been running fine. Tonight, my 9 year old plugged in the USB a generic kiddie camera. Well, the screen turned blue with some sought of error message. I rebooted and now my CPU fan sounds like its ready to take off. My 9 year is hysterical(emotional girl). Please help! Thanks!

A:PLease help, I think my 9 year old infected my PC!

The symptoms you describe could be symptomatic of a variety of things to include hardware/software issues, overheating caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing or underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty or unsigned device drivers, CMOS battery going bad, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware components, programs hanging or unresponsive in the background, and even malware. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to shutdown/restart on a more regular basis. When Windows XP detects a problem from which it cannot recover, it displays Stop Error Messages which contain specific information that can help diagnose and resolve the problem detected by the Windows kernel. An error message can be related to a broad number of problems such as driver conflicts, hardware issues, read/write errors, and software malfunctions. In Windows XP, the default setting is for the computer to reboot automatically when a fatal error or crash occurs. You may not see the error code because the computer reboots too fast. An easier alternative is to turn off the automatic reboot feature so you can actually see the error code/STOP Message when it happens - this is also known as the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD). To change the recovery settings and Disable Automatic Rebooting, go to Start > Run and type: sysdm.cplClick Ok or just press WINKEY + Pause/Break keys to bring up System Properties.Go to the Advanced tab and under "Startup and Reco...
