Dell Studio/Vista 64bit computer crashes when idle

Q: Dell Studio/Vista 64bit computer crashes when idle

Alrighty, I've got a bit of a perplexing problem. My Four(ish) month old laptop has taken on a new, annoying bad habit. Occasionally, when left to idle for longer than about 30 minutes, it'll quietly blue screen, restart itself, to the user selection screen and then be completely fine. However, it isn't consistently BSoDing. Often, I can leave it set for hours and hours while I do chores or work on something else, and it will happily sit still and wait for my return.

On the flip side, it never BSoDs when I'm using it. On days when I have to do a lot of work, or even extended WoW sessions with friends, it runs like clockwork for hours on end.

I've never had any major errors, I frequently scan for spyware (adaware), viruses (avast!), and nothing other than a few cookies (in adaware) ever comes up. My computer's temperature consistently runs between 110F-128F, and if idling, usually between 100-110. I can't recall downloading or installing anything that would cause this.

While it isn't a major concern, it is annoying, and BSoDs are actually kind of serious. I checked to see if it was that silly screensaver that a few people on here had talked about, and unfortunately it isn't. Apparently I'm actually BSoDing.

Any tips, tricks, questions, and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
PS: I figured due to the peculiar nature of this crashing, that it is probably a security issue, rather than something hardware related. If anyone feels that this belongs in a different category, feel free to ask me to repost or move the thread to another section. Anything that will help me fix this annoyance would be amazing.

My computer, running on Vista, has had frequent Window closures for the past month.  The message says something about "KERNEL".  It flashes off the screen and begins to reboot before I can read the whole message.  It seems to do it when I am online.  I do a lot of writing offline and it doesn't seem to happen then.
I fell down some steps in December, while carrying my open computer.  The computer hit the concrete floor and killed my hard drive.  A new hard drive was installed.  It's been running OK but slowly since then until these recent closures began happening about a month ago.  With instruction, I ran an "sfc", which came back clean.  I also ran a chkdsk which came back with one critical error, I think.  I am not computer savvy and I am working with someone who is to try to resolve the problem before I purchase upgraded RAM for my computer.
I need to know if I have a hardware problem that might mean a new computer or if this problem is fixable.  Please help.

I've recently had trouble with my computer freezing during virus scans. From what I can tell, this usually happens just as it starts scanning the cache. It also seems to freeze whenever I let the computer go idle and when I try to install games like Fallout 3. I'm not sure if this is an issue with my virus protection (I'm currently using Norton Internet Security 2009) or a registry issue. Thinking that it might be a registry error, I've run C-Cleaner and removed any of the problems it found. I also thought it might be an issue with my drivers so I tried using Driver Max. However, I was never able to install any new drivers because my computer froze whenever I downloaded them. Things used to be worse though and I couldn't even boot. I suspected a virus because I'd recently downloaded some music through vuze so I ran portable anti-virus in safe mode. I did this overnight and while I'm not sure it even removed any viruses, my computer was able to boot the next day. Sorry for the long explanation but I keep thinking of different problems I've had recently. I'm sure a lot of them are just related to the fact that I'm running vista 64 bit but I haven't had too many problems with the OS before. Here's a log from hijackthis if it's any help:

I don't see any obvious signs of malware in that log, but lets take a deeper look

Please do the following:

Download OTSto your DesktopClose ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
Check the box that says Scan All Users
Check the box that says 64 bit
Under Additional Scans check the following:File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan
Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

My ISP has recently up-graded my broad band speed to 50meg.
The wi-fi card in my laptop can only cope with 20meg - the card is a DW1397 to 802.11g standard.
My laptop currently does not have bluetooth, so I'm looking for a combined card to up-grade the wi-fi to 802.11n standard and add bluetooth to enable both my phone and table to talk to my laptop.
Any ideas/advise would appreciated.

I have a sony vaio VGN-FW378J laptop which runs in Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. My problem seems to have started when I installed several windows updates which included windows essentials 2011, IE9 and others. Service Pack 2 was already installed prior to installing the said updates. My laptop freezes very often since then and it happens almost everytime I use the internet explorer. The screen turns black and I cannot do anything else but reboot my computer. I was thinking that it was with my graphics card or my monitor but i noticed later that even the sound freezes too. What I did was to recover my entire system and it did solve the problem until windows update updated/upgraded features like windows essentials, IE & etc. again. I'm not actually using windows essentials except for the messenger but i do use IE all the time. I tried to unistall the update for IE and reverted it back to IE8 and my computer has stopped crashing for two days now. So I'm assuming that it was really IE9 that was causing my problem. was it? Is there any remedy, say patch to solve the issue?

Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks

A:Computer with Vista 64bit Crashes probably caused by upgrade to IE9

A question to us of "Is IE9 causing my crashes" causes us to answer it is possible.
I do have several suggestions
Continue to use IE8, many do, not only because of problems but beause it is preferred
Use another broswer such as Firefox or Chrome or one of many others.
You can try to repair, make a clean boot and if you do not have problems use the instructions to determine the cause.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If you have addons included with IE9, you can remove them as a test.

Hello all!

I wonder if anyone could help me shed some light on the best process for the above subject.

I currently have a Dell Studio XPS 435MT (Vista 64bit) running two HDD's in RAID 0 (as from factory) I need to install Windows 7 64bit and would like to also install it onto the new SSD I have bought (Crucial 128GB) as an upgrade.

Could I simply take the current HDD's out (after backing up essential data) to keep safe as backup plan and add the SSD into slot 0 and install Windows 7?? Then possibly add say a 1tb storage drive to the system later?

One solution someone has sent my way is to clone the two 500gb RAID 0 drives to a single 1tb drive then install Windows 7 onto the new SSD and have both drives on a multiboot? Could this work?

I have seen/heard many versions of how to go about this install but no real evidence of a true way?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

A:Dell Studio XPS 435MT - Installing SSD and Windows 7 64bit

It takes 3-500GB drives to give you 1.3TB of storage space because of formatting over-head. 2-500GB drives will be considerably less than 1TB. Keep the 2-500's in a single RAID array and set the SSD as a separate partition for Windows 7

Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit
Clean installation to windows 7 from Windows XP professional
Hardware 18 months old
OS installed 2 weeks ago

I am currently facing the lovely BSOD error. The computer was recently upgraded from windows XP to Windows 7 enterprise 64bit , this was a fresh installation from XP. The computer originally came with pre installed with Windows 7 installed but was downgraded to XP to meet company IT requirements. We have now been given the go ahead to trial windows 7. However after installation we are now facing issues of very random BSOD moments. Sometimes while using access or excel. At other times the computer could be totally idle. I would like to mention that our IT team upgraded the RAM in the computer from 4gb to 8gb prior to the Windows 7 installation. I do have a feeling that there is an issue with the memory which is causing this issue. I have attached my BSOD zip pack and would be very appreciative if one of the guru's could assist me on the matter.

About 1 month ago, I purchased a new battery and charger...
So I replaced it with the old one... And I could use it for 5-6 hours... Then it crashed and it wouldn't turn on. (At start I was suspecting overheating, but my computer wasn't that hot.. It had been a lot more hot..)
I went with it to repair and got it back yesterday... They told me that motherboard crashed...
So.. Yesterday... I could use it again 5-6 hours... And same thing happened.. Only this time smoke started to come from my battery charger...

Could it have something to do with my new battery and charger?

Thanks in advanced...

This is a Dell Studio 540 with Windows Vista Premium. So I am trying to fix it for a friend. I have never used Vista before (I had all XP computers and avoided Vista). Anyway, her computer crashed and would not boot up. She had a bad power supply which I replaced. The computer boots (1 beep, then two beeps) and then boots fine into Windows. However, about 5 minutes after booting up, the computer blue-screens and crashes and does not stay long enough for me to see any messages, then re-boots. This DOES NOT happen in Safe Mode. In fact, I tried a system restore from safe mode which did nothing. I of course suspect that its a corrupted Windows installation since it works in Safe Mode.

Now she does not recall the beeps codes when the computer started up (never paid attention) but the research I did indicates this may be a glitch in some of the 540s--in other words they give the usual one beep on start up then a few seconds later, two short beeps but does not effect the boot into windows. So this may have nothing to do with the problem. I 've swapped ram, video card, nothing stops the two-beeps.

I'm thinking the best thing to do is just re-install Windows Vista. I do have a DVD--although I have reinstalled XP countless times, I have never done it with Vista--does it work the same? If so, is there a guide as to re-installation? (not fresh installation--re-installation). Or is there something else I can try to fix the problem.

A:Dell Studio - One beep, then two beeps, crashes on bootup

Try disabling the automatic reboot, so you can write down the BSOD message. You can do this by pressing F8 after the bios splash screen. Same place you see the option for booting into safe mode.

Hi Guys,

I'm getting a dell studio, but want to dual boot with xp. The only thing is I've read its a heck of a lot easier when u have vista disc to repair bootloader. Do you know if the del studio comes with disc, or just HDD partition backup. I haven't seen a clear answer on this so far and if you don't get it its just a pain. You should always get a disc of the OS in my opinion.

I have a new HDD installed in a Dell Studio 1555 laptop and am trying to install Windows XP Pro. Everything goes fine until I press F8 to accept the EULA, nothing happens after that. It seems to turn off that key. I checked the keyboard with PC Check and it works fine. I can escape out of the setup and page up or down to view the EULA but thats it. I'm not sure if its a setting in the BIOS or something programmed into the CMOS to not let me do this or whatever. I can probably work everything else out after that.

My desktop recently started freezing for no apparent reason that I know of. The screen will just lock up and I have to restart with the power button. That doesn't always work either and sometimes I cant even boot into safe mode. I have not added any new hardware in 3 years but there is a new icon in the bottom right tray that says "Safely Remove Hardware". This has just recently appeared within the last few weeks. The only thing we use it for is web surfing and my son plays Minecraft on it. I think there may be a good possibility that maybe he did something or downloaded something bad for his game.
There have been bsod's 1 or 2 times and if I remember right, maybe something about memory dump.

Hey everyone. So my computer has been crashing sporadically whenever I leave the computer alone (sometimes it happens within a few minutes, other times a few hours). It has never done so while I was actually using it. Whenever I do come back after a crash, I turn on my monitor and move my mouse but nothing happens and there is no signal going from the computer to the monitor. The fans are still spinning and I can open the optical drive etc., but I can't get my computer to send a signal. A fraction of the time, I can get the computer to reboot and get an error log but most of the time I have to manually restart to get my comp working again. I have attached the .dmp files I have managed to get. Temps seem fine and I can't figure out what's going on...

Please remove any CD/DVD virtualization software, such as Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120%, as they use a driver called sptd.sys that is known to cause BSODs. Use add/remove programs to remove the software. After removing the software, use the sptd.sys uninstaller to remove sptd.sys from the system.

I prefer TotalMounter as my CD/DVD virtualization software as it allows me to burn images to a virtual CD/DVD if I just want an ISO file instead of a disc, and it is free.

Hello, folks... In my efforts to finally see if there's anything I can do to save my poor computer, I've come here.

About 8 months back my PC suffered a bit of a tumble (Desk broke.. What rotten luck.) It took a good hit to the case, and while I opened it up and checked, nothing looked to be dislodged or out of place. I put the PC back into service the same day, and it was making strange noises at boot-up. The noises stopped after a second or two, and it proceeded to boot just fine. However, as the months have gone on, worsening problems have become apparent. The most recent problems (last month or two) is that if I shut it down, sometimes it does not boot correctly, and auto-restarts itself until it can boot properly. Progressing from that I decided to start leaving the machine on full time, since I was unsure if the next boot would be its last. Well, power failures happen, and it has had a few forced restarts since then, each making the strange noises for a short while until it boots.

Lately, however, it has taken to locking up whenever the computer sits idle for too long. I checked to see if perhaps any of my Norton anti-virus tools might be causing idle-time lockups, but as they are all disabled this s rather unlikely. So I took to leaving a program run in full screen mode whenever I had to be idle, or away from my machine. This seemed to help for about a week or so, but has recently stopped preventing lockups.

A few other PC-Savy friends have suggested that my PC mig... Read more

I ran into a series of non responsive programs and start up issues. I have been able to fix them up till now using the start up repair in vista. Currently, the repair is failing to solve the blue screen im getting at startup. The screen flashes to fast to read it.On attempt #4 on the startup repair.

I posted on the dell forums and the only suggestion they could give was to update the BIOS. I was successful in doing so, but it turned out useless.

I have ran a memory diag, and the scn disk things. Both came out clean or repaired from what I can tell, correctly.

Any suggestions?

my mini computer is a funny one, i can be sitting working on it for hours on end without any hick ups but always whenever i leave it for a while to go do something else, when i come back it has crashed, automatically rebooted so no bluescreen. but it only crashes like this if i leave it idle, turned on.

What processes does windows start when the computer is not engaged by a user? because it has to be something like that which makes it fault and reboot right?

Do you have error reporting enabled? If so you can check their for the reason for shut down. and post a screen shot of the report. Also even though you built your own system we still need you to fll out your system spec fully in user cp.Thanks

first of all sorry if this article is in the wrong section i thought that i would get better support about my problem here. So let me begin, i just changed my graphics card from a problematic 6870 to a gtx 760. I love it so far, also i clean installed Windows 8.1 Pro instead of my old Win7 Ultimate. As for my problem, i was downloading something with uTorrent around 18gigs, i left the PC for about 2 hours or more and when i got back i had no signal and the PC was not responding to anything, it had crashed...i thought that this happened because of the (Disable monitor after some time setting in the power profile of Win8.1) so i changed it to no disabling at all. But today i left it again to download the rest of the gigs and when i got back it had crashed. I am really frustrated. (extra info: i recently changed my rams to slots 2-4 in order for my cooler to fit properly, i searched the web and i saw a recommendation about removing Asus Utilites i use Asus gpu tool do not know if i should remove it)
Thank you

OK i'm going to try and be as detailed as possible with my problem...

When I leave my computer idle it blue screens after about 10-20 minutes. It only does this when there are no full-screen programs open e.g. if I leave Dragon Age running it doesn't crash. I'm ruling out an oveheating problem because of this.

The error message I get when the computer reboots is always slightly different but the BCCode is always 50.

If it is a background program the only things I can think of are Skype (unlikely I think I've had that on longer than I've had this problem) or the Impulse Dock (again think I've had it longer than the problem).

There is one possible driver problem. There is an exclamation mark next to 6TO4 Adapter but I don't think this is the problem because I found a Microsoft report that said that this isn't actually an issue.

A:[SOLVED] Computer Crashes when Idle

Here's a link to more info on the STOP 0x50 error:

For the 6to4 adapter - right click on it and select "Uninstall".
Then reboot the system - most likely it won't even come back (it's for converting stuff that uses IPv6 to IPv4 when it moves out onto the network).

Please provide this information for us to work with:

I'm new to windows vista having recently bought a new computer and am experiencing a range of different BSODs. They range from issues to do with CACHE_MANAGER to SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and normally take place when performing memory intensive activities (such as playing games or using music composition software). Doing a small amount of research into these messages around the forums seems to indicate that they are a memory error, although that neither helps or narrows down the problem . I have limited knowledge with computer diagnostics but am more then capable of following instructions.

I have also started to collect as much information about the problem as suggested on many threads, my most recent crash data sets are contained below:

For the past two weeks my laptop has been beeping. It doesn't beep when I first turn the computer on. Once I'm to the desktop it starts to beep and it's VERY inconsistent. It may beep 5 every five minutes or every 20 minutes. Sometimes it beeps once and other times its beeped two or three times fast. And occasionally I get the BSOD saying something about "dumping my physical memory." On top of that when I load the computer I get an error saying that my Catalyst Control Centre is not working. I just assumed all these things were connected.

A few months ago my hard drive died so I installed a new one. I haven't had any issues until the issues I listed above, all of which start just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately my warranty has expired so Dell's support hasn't been much help.

So does this sound like the hard drive I installed is creating the issues? Any advice is very helpful!

A:Dell Studio 1536 with Vista 64 has a continuous beep and BSOD

Have you checked for crud in your keyboard... any cause for a sticking key, sticking space bar, etc.

Don't see how the hard drive could cause the problem.

Have you looked at all the Dell Beep Codes... They are posted elsewhere on this TechSpot forum... that could give you a starting point.

So, today I was caching up on the Olympics through the BBC and my laptop turned itself off. It does sometimes anyway through over heating, and has always in the two years I have owned it. Its a Dell Studio 1555, 32 bit Vista Home. Now when I reboot I receive this message:

1. Insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3. Click "Repair your computer".

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator other computer manufacturer for assistance.

This has happened to me before because of updating itunes, which I understand. Could someone please tell me the reason this time? I did not expect Iplayer to cause difficulties. I never received any kids of disks for my laptop and I would appreciate if anyone knew of any was I could save all of my personal files. if it needs to be wiped then if someone could suggest how that'd be awesome!

The reason that you are getting the warning is PROBABLY due to the fact that the shut down caused Hard Drive Damage. If it is not too serious we will be able to save your stuff and get you up and running again. If so you should make a hard drive test and an chhkdsk. We will show you how. First get your stuff. Hoping someone can help.

Please excuse me if I use incorrect terms or don't quickly understand as I am a Mac person who uses PCs at work.

I have a MacPro Early 2009 running Windows 7 Pro 64bit via BootCamp.

Things were going fine until my work changed software in office. While creating a partition on the SSD and installing the image on to the partition, I now have constant crashes either when computer goes idle after the screen shuts off per power savings settings or if using the computer occurs between 35-40 minutes after the computer restarts. In fact it occurred writing this post.

I have never been able to see the BSOD, but either the screen does not wake with the keyboard, or if I do not allow the computer monitor to go off, clicking on the cursor either does not work or the cursor is not visible. Only a power button restart recovers.

Recently I have now begun getting error dialog boxes saying different things. One more repeated message is "Desktop Window Manager has stopped working and was closed" but when I look it is running. I have also begun receiving messages like "javaw.exe - Bad Image" from Explorer.exe or some other program - Bad Image.

I have tried a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro 64bit on a reformatted drive but the crash still occurs.

Any insight would be appreciated.

This is a weird problem that showed up in my laptop over the past few months, but I'm just now heading here to try to get some insight on the problem.

So when I first got this computer about two and a half years ago, it could edit/render/encode HD videos with little sweat. Now, it can sorta still do that. The only quaint problem is that it tends to crash if I go AFK for about 10 minutes or so while it is doing so. I can sit while rendering a video and browse the internet with no problem--I don't even really feel the laptop getting very warm, let alone crashing. However if I am to leave it alone while I go to do something else, I always come back to it turned off.

When I reboot, I get the typical "Windows did not shut down correctly" spiel.

It's just weird.. I mean I can work around it, but I wouldn't mind knowing what's causing this and if it's fixable. I even set my computer to where it never dims/blanks the screen, thinking that was causing it, but to no avail.

Thanks in advance.

It should be noted that the computer is perfectly fine if left idle while not doing something strenuous like rendering.

So I just had basically 3 crashes in an hour just a while ago. The first one happened while watching a youtube video and the whole computer froze leaving a sound loop had to make a forced restart. The second one was a BSOD, while the computer was in idle. I was able to use the .exe file here to create the zip file. But about 10-15 seconds after it finished the computer froze again, and I had to force a restart.

3 crashes in 1 hour, that's the most crashes I've ever seen for my computer.

I recently went on vacation. While I was gone (for a month) my computer wasn't used at all. In fact, it was unplugged etc.
When I left my system was running perfectly. Pages loaded quickly, downloads were lightning fast...

Since I've been back, however, my computer suddenly runs VERY slowly.
At times it is painfully slow.
- Pages take minutes to load (or time out)
- Simple tasks like looking at photos on facebook are essentially impossible, given the ridiculously slow speed
- I have been completely unable to download anything at all. The downloads don't even get to 1% with 1/2 hour passing...

I'll try to get a HiJackThis log to post here as well, but at present, I'm unable to get it to load in Vista.

Any help that anyone could provide would be great
I'll try & reboot now & get that HiJackThis log to post as well.

Well, yesterday I was mindlessly updating my itunes, just the normal moving/remaining song etc., when my laptop shut off unexpectedly. This has happened before over the last two years due to over heating and it was very very hot at the time. Now when it's witched back on I receive this message:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click 'next'.

So...There's been no changes to my system in months-it's been working amazingly, and I never received any kind of disk with the laptop when I bought it-not sure where to get those then. I'm not overly up on the idea of paying for something I was supposed to be given when I paid for the laptop, so alternatives would be appreciated!
I've tried quite a few methods already, f8 which doesn't give me a repair option, other f keys which seem to just lead back to the same screen, even had a go at creating a vista recovery disk which hasn't seemed to work, unless I'm doing it wrong!

So, yeah, any help would be appreciated, I can't seem to find answers anywhere!

I may have a solution. You will lose your stuff, however. If you have stuff to save post and I will tell you how. If you just want the computer fixed, give this a try:
Ctrl + F11 or F8 - Access Dell computers Dell System Restore (DSR) partition on many different models.
If it works, you are restored to the way the computer was the day that you purchased it. You have to reinstall your programs, updates, SPs etc.

OK first of all I have a Dell XPS 420 with an nVidia 8800GTS(not the stock GPU)
I have 6gigs of ram(2 sticks of stock ram(2gigs)
a 850W PSU(I added it later)
and it has a Core 2 Quad Q6600
I am running Vista Premium 64-bit OEM (I swapped it from 32 bit)

So lately I have been having BSODs at least every night. Many times it is when I am not even using it and happens after i go to bed for the night. I have realized that I leave it on to long and lately I have been turning it off when I go to school at 7:50 until after I get home at 4pm. This hasn't helped and it got worse when I added 4 gigs of ram. I have read around and apparently dells have problems with their motherboards. This seems likely but before I drop the money to get a new one(this one is having other issues) I need to be sure. If anymore information is required just let me know and Ill get it to you.
If at all possible I need to know tonight because I want the parts to get here in time for my friend to come over this weekend to help me out with putting it together.

In case I do need the new mobo here is the one my friend picked and the case that I will need (because Dell cases are proprietary and wont fit most mobos)

Can someone point me where I need to go please to get these drivers? Mainly I just need the touchpad drivers and ATI mobility drivers. Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and have had the below issue for about a week now.
I've been looking for solutions in this forum and online but nothing worked or matched the symptoms.
Symptoms are :
The computer when powered up does not start,
Screen remains black,
Touch sounds buttons mute and raise volume blink in unison,
Lower sound button remain on,
This is for a Dell Studio 1535 I have had for 7 years. Running windows 8 for 4/5 months now.
I have tried : A solution by Krypebud posted here 6 years ago : which was to download the firmware ISO I and reboot the computer. This did not work.
I have also checked that the screen does not work on a second monitor : it does not.
Additionally I have tried the LCD BIST test which works fine, no distortions, colours all seem fine.

Would anyone know needs to be done here ? (apart from buying a new laptop)
Please be simple in your explanations I have very little knowledge of computers, assume I have no idea about anything.
Thanks in advance for your help,

My son's computer (Dell Vostro 200, Mini Tower Intel Core 2 CPU, 2.53 GHZ, 3MB RAM) has begun freezing when he leaves it on for more than a few hours.

When he tries to wake up the OS with his mouse after being away from the computer, the mouse doesn't respond. Ditto for the keyboard, even when I try the Windows keyboard shortcut to restart it.

I hate to do it because it can corrupt files, but there's no other way to restart Windows other than to turn off the CPU. After he powers the unit back up, everything's fine.......until he leaves it alone for more than a short period of time.

We've run a few different spyware and virus scans and found nothing.
Do you know what the problem might be? More importantly, do you have any idea what remedial measures we should take?

Sigh, I guess I will start from downloading IOBIT advanced system care and then it asked me to update my driver and now I have this driver failure thing where I'm unable to login to window, I've googled so much and now I'm in need of the rescue disc file for rebooting so I can perform system restoration, but I'm unable to download it from the window official website because I don't have the registration key... it was installed for me at the shop so I never had a disc.

I've actually downloaded the disc else where and installed it onto a USB but it didn't seem to detect the USB at all, I did perform F2 , boot mode and put all my USB drives to the top as my priority, I don't know if the files were corrupted at the beginning so now I'm hoping if someone can help....

Many thanks

Hey guys, this is my first post but I've been reading a lot here and you guys are usually very useful. That being said, I'm having some computer issues.

I'm running Windows Vista 32 on a Dell Inspiron 530. Intel Core Duo E4500 not overclocked or anything.

There has been no new hardware added besides 2 more gigs of ram and an internal 500gb HDD. These had been in place for a few months already so I don't think they are the issue. Well here's what happens....

It started when i was playing Oblivion, all of a sudden the screen went sort of pink. The best way i can describe it was it was pink and glitchy looking. I assumed it was the video card over heating. So i had to hard reboot by holding the power for a few seconds. When it attempts to boot Green vertical lines and red checkered boxes across the screen that flash. Then it would get to the windows loading screen and have white dotted lines. For a few times after that it would boot up about 50% of the time. During one of those successful boots i installed speedfan and everything stayed around 35-40C peaking around 50C the GPU was no higher then 80C granted it wasn't under a load at the time.

Eventually it wouldn't boot at all, i decided i would reformat and do a clean vista install. I did this and installed up to SP2 got age of emps 3 going and the same thing happened like it did with oblivion. I have a picture of that here -->( ill upload the pic in a few mins)

Ok so it wouldn't boot after that for about a day. To... Read more

I am not quite sure where to it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

How do I decrease it ?
Of all the PCs I have seen, mine seems to be the highest. Generally it is around 800mb to 1.3gb on average IMO.
I have checked Task manager and no program is using this much ram ? So what's eating it so much ?

A:1.7-1.8 gb RAM usage at idle [Win 7 64bit]

I wouldn't consider 800Mb to 1.3 GB RAM usage on startup with a 64 bit OS as either unusual or abnormal. I wouldn't be concerned.

Adding up the items in the memory usage column rarely provides meaningful results. The default numbers do not show full usage of the process and there are very significant users of memory that are not processes.

Memory usage in any modern OS is highly dynamic. The memory manager will always try to assign memory where it will do the most good to maximize performance. It will always try to find some use for as much memory as possible. Unused memory is wasted memory. Memory usage at bootup may seem high but that is only because there is currently no better use for it. Starting a large application will result in this usage being trimmed back as needed, drastically if necessary.

You could post a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance tab but I really don't think anything is wrong.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

So on the Microsoft website i saw somewhere that i can't installe this Vista version on a new computer unless i have like Windows XP that i can upgrade from, is this true ? i cant instal Vista Home Premium 64 bit OEM as the first and only OS on my com?

Hope you guys can help me out

A:Vista 64bit on a new homemade computer

Is it a clean install or contains an OS? You can't upgrade an OS from the OEM 64-bit CD. Reset your system BIOS to default with the jumper on board. Reduce RAM to 2 sticks. Use a decent brand DVD to install it. Use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard, if possible. I have seen USB keyboard and mouse cause this issue. Only install the video card, hard drive, and DVD drive. Basically, do a barebones install. Make sure your motherboard BIOS is up to date. Install the proper drivers for your controller.

Dell has replaced the motherboard, video card, and hard drive. We've run diagnostics on the monitor and it appears ok.

I've spent in excess of 13 hours on the phone with Dell and Microsoft tech support. They've run (or had me run) every imaginable diagnostic. We've installed different video drivers (I have Radeon X300) to no avail.

It used to be occasional, but now I boot the system and it crashes withing minutes... sometimes as soon as Vista comes up. Sometimes I can boot in safe mode w/networking and it will stablilize but sometimes it crashes in safe mode too.

However, other times the purple/green starts flashing as soon as the boot starts (i.e., prior to Vista loading -- when the Dell logo comes up on the screen.

Has anyone had this problem? Needless to say I'm at my wits end with this.

These crashes were caused by memory corruption (probably a driver). Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

first, i thought it was the anti-virus tools problem, so i uninstalled norton and installed Kaspersky, it didn't work well. these problems still happens now and then.

After looking up in the forum, i found some helpful resources. someone says it might be connected with my hard drive partition, or a matter of the name of these drivers. i did the partition using the windows 7 default partition tool, not really sure if it is the issue;
Someone mentions the CPU overclock issue, not sure what it is. but i did do some optimization. I bought this notebook a month ago, so its quite new.

Hey guys. Background on my system: It's a Dell Latitude E6520, purchased July 2011, Win7 Pro 64-bit. Has been very stable for me until recently.

In the past few months I've managed to catch some malware, and a couple times successfully fixed the issue (or so I thought?) with Malwarebytes and other methods as needed. Lately, past few days, I"m not sure why, but the system has been unstable. I was getting multiple BSODs and thought I fixed the issue. If the computer goes on idle though, it can't be woken up and if I press the power button it'll shut right down (usually, if I was going to hard boot like this I'd need to hold it down a good few seconds). Powering back on brings me to the startup repair options. Only a couple times have I been able to get to the actual startup repair menu where I could run all the different options, such as fixboot, etc., and I have done that. Most of the time the system begins checking for startup issues and never gets past that point before I have to hard boot again. then I just select "start windows normally". I do have a startup repair disc I created, but I've already tried the options and it's not solving my issue.

Just now I searched for issues related to certain .dll files showing an error in the Event Viewer; sysmain.dll and wcp.dll are the ones I see under error code 1005 for two days ago and yesterday. I have a DVB card called Twinhan 1025

Twinhan company is gone so they dont provide new drivers

the driver we have is for Vista 64bit which works well with RAM more or less than 4 GB but in Windows 7 64bit it works with only RAM less than 4 GB

My RAM is 6 GB when I boot normally I am able to get the signal level and quality but cant add channels or view them

when I set the boot option the limits the memory to 4000MB I am able to view or add new channels
This is not a software issue
cause I have tried programs in compatibility mode and as administrator
and download viewers for 64bit OS and for 32 bit OS

So it's a driver problem or Windows 7 problem

Now can I do something to make Windows allow this driver to map specific range of memory ?

I was just wondering if this could be just an installer problem.
The filesize of 182.06_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whql is just 22kb.
I noticed on another site (64bit and x64) they have a download of the same driver that is a 100 MB.

Is anyone familiar with Can I safely download the NVidia drivers
from there?

And do I really need to install 64bit versions of the driver or can I just as well install the 32 bit version of the same driver (even though my OS is 64 bit) ???

I tried scanning with Malwarebytes anti malware, and it didn't detect anything. I decided to update it. After the update i can't even open the program now. Some kinda DLL error pops up.

I also tried Bitdefender's online scan, but it didn't detect anything. I'm trying to scan with Avira as we speak, but the whole program seems to be frozen.

I downloaded HijackThis, tried to scan, but some kind of authorization error came up. I closed it and tried running as administrator. Now it keeps telling me that "This program is already running"

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this was asked before, please forgive me if this is just a repeat. I am new in the forum.

Does 64bit machines (Dual Processors or Quad etc) need a 64bit Vista to maximize its capabilities? I noticed that new PCs and Laptops shipped today have pre-installed Vista but 32bit OS . . . why is this? Or does it really matter? Please explain this puzzling mystery to a non-techie like me.

Thanks guys.

I like Windows 95, 98, XP and Vista!!!!!

A:Does 64bit machines (Dual Processors) need a 64bit Vista?

Hello Rockrus, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Yes, you get the most out of your 64 bit machine by using a 64 bit OS with it. It will not hurt anything to use a 32 bit OS though.

This article may be an interesting read for you to help explain all of the differences between 32 bit and 64 bit.

Hope this helps,

So last night I started the Win 7 Pro 64 bit "upgrade" on my vista 64 bit business OS.

Before doing this on my home machine - I tested first at work on a VM of vista 32bit business - upgrade to win 7 32 bit pro.... took about 30 min. Done. Of course thats a vanilla install too.

I dont have a lot on my PC at home... a handful of programs at most. Going on 19 HOURS later, it is still at the "transferring files, settings and programs (62%) portion of the upgrade and still shows activity happening.

Any ideas on what is taking this so long to do? Suggestions on if I should just scrap this upgrade install ?

Hi i have Web Studio for building and maintaining my website. I was on No. 4 and it worked well on XP and 7. I have upgraded to 5 and works perfectly on my XP laptop but constantly crashes on 7. It does all sorts of strange things, the words I keep getting is 'Web Studio has stopped working, looking for a solution..' Any help would be great. (I tried reinstalling - no difference. Now I have exactly the same program file transferred from my laptop view memory stick, still problems). Thanks for reading this.

A:My Web Studio good on XP crashes on 7

Hello jackie and welcome to the Forum. First thing I'd suggest is make sure your 7 computer meets the minimum requirements as found in the 5.0 User Manual:

User Manual

Attachment 111504

If you aren't sure what your system specs are, this free tool from Piriform called SPECCY should help you out. You can click each item in the left column for a detailed analysis of your machine.

Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Once you've determined if you meet the minimum specs, and if you're still having issues, you could try running 5.0 in Compatibility Mode.

Hi there, I have Vista Home premium, 64-bit, and all has been working just fine, until September 1 when I got a "Java Update" notification. I accepted the update, and ever since then, intermittently my computer freezes. I ran all sorts of antivirus, malware, spyware, programs, and found the trojan: javainstaller.jar. I searched on Java's site and found this:

Followed their instructions to get rid of it, and the freezing is less, but still happens a few times a day. It usually freezes with Firefox up and running, and I've tried ctrl-alt-del to get to task manager to end the non-responsive program (firefox). I cannot get task manager, it simply will not come up.

Any ideas? This is so aggravating, since i was downloading a trusted update from a so-called trusted company. Now my 1YO laptop appears to be pooched. Not sure how to get rid of the latest java update either, and no, i do not have a restore point to go back to (dumb, i know).

Ok so i downloaded A.V.A ( alliance of valiant arms ) and i really like it, ever since i installed it has been shutting my pc down completely random during gameplay, the computer doesnt restart and give me any warnings that i can see from in-game. This doesn't happen with any other games or programs, In fact i can run multiple instances of many programs and nothing like that happens, my computer specs are as follows:

Manufacturer: Packard Bell

I tried to update the drivers for the motherboard and graphics and i've run scans and checks and nothing seems to work.. I don't know what else to do and i don't want to not play the game..

My current computer temperatures according to SpeedFan 4.40 with only firefox + ventrilo running are:

hi hi hi

i have just put together a new pc from bits and pieces, but the problem is that when the computer has nothing to do it freezes.... its really annoying. if i leave it for about twenty minutes...BAM....its frozen.

the weird thing is that you can play counter strike source in 1024x768 getting over 100 frames per second, for as long as you like.... i was playing it for most of the day yesterday, the only breaks to eat and pee, and it didnt even flinch. but when i shut all apllications down, and leave it on desktop. it freezes and needs a restart.

something like this:
asus P4800-se mainboard
intel pentium 4 2.8 gig (no hyper threading)
500 meg ram (2 256 sticks of matched samsung ram 3200)
maxtor 80 gig sata hdd
sound blaster audigy (internal rack mounting fits in the 5 1/4 bay)
at the moment in has a radeon 6800 pro hercules in it, but it has had various graphice cards and it has made no difference.
granted, that my psu is a bit crap, it is a 350w jobbie that is p4 ready, running 18a on the 12v rail. so should be ok. (i am gonna change it soonish anyway)

any ideas guys?
please help.

My problem is simple my computer restarts when left idle for to long an hour...sometimes less.
This problem has persisted even after my reinstall.
I had SP1 but now I can't get much of any upgrades as I have to be active at my computer for it to stay running.

MemTest has shown no faults.
Check Disk shows no faults.

My own opinion is that it is a RAM or HDD problem.
And Chkdsk and memtest are not picking it up, however then I have to wonder why it doesnt restart when running M2:TW or WoW or CnC3 or any other game I have.

I tried to give as much info as I could, please tell me if you need more.

EDIT: I also tried sfc /scannow
EDIT: Attached the errors that were in my event log.

A:Idle Crashes

I just had 3 restarts in a row.

It seems that opening a web browser causes a restart pretty quickley afterwords. I just had FF freeze up resulting in a restart

twice, then I had IE do the same thing. So I am writing this in Notepad. It may be interesting to note that when a restart happens

everything freezes. Then the screen goes black but I still have my mouse. Then the restart happens.

This problem really needs to be fixed. It freezes unless I am doing something./ And since I reinstalled I don't have any games

installed, which means I have to install ine. Which usually ends in a crash. I also cannot currently do my school work since I

can't really stay logged into Blackboard for very long. Also Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing.

EDIT: I will be unplugging my Ethernet cord and uninstalling my network card. I am hoping maybe this will explain the connection of FF and IE to my restarts.

hi guys have a problem that hopefully someone can help me with. my pc will crash and start makeing a high pitch noise from inside(not the speakers) when the pc is left idle. it usually happens after between 1 to 5 hours. never happens when iim using it. when it does the screen will be black in power saving mode by then i guess and ive noticed the mouse led i off. nothing works to get out of it, i have to hold the power button and force it to turn off.
this started happening when i recently updated from xp to windows 7. i have an old p5k se asus motherboard that doesnt nessesarilly have win7 drivers so i thought it was this. but i have tryed as hard as i can to find uptodate drivers and this dont work. however im still unsore if the drivers i have are really up to date. also tryed resetting bios by taking out battery(just in case).
well thats it im stuck hope someone can help!!!1

A:pc crashes when idle

With a black screen, it's impossible to see what was there last before the PC crashes.

First thing I would do is go into power saving mode and set the screen timeout to NEVER. That will leave the screen on -- so when it starts making the noise, you can see what's on screen (if anything).

Also, if it's going into sleep or hibernation, and you can't get it out, then turn those off as well. A hard-reset (pressing the power button) is never a good thing. Better to have to turn the machine off properly than having to resort to hard-reset to get it back working.

Would any of you please tell me where to find the proper 64-bit drivers to use on a Dell Inspiron 531S?

The official Dell website does not share drivers for that edition of XP. My computer came with Ubuntu pre-installed. Please help me get the right drivers XP Pro (64-bit).

The only reason why I'm searching for 64-bit drivers for XP is because I have no interest in using Windows Vista or any 32-bit operating systems from Microsoft. Like I mentioned before, the Dell website is not offering the proper drivers I need for this computer and the Windows XP (64-bit).

I've read articles about getting 64-bit drivers to work on that computer, but I haven't found any website that offers the same drivers. I'm basically on my own, according to this Dell expert (see below). That person told me about the drivers without sharing 1 single link to download the 64-bit drivers (or chipset) for XP, which he/she mentioned:
Dell does not support 64 bit in that model and the reason there are no drivers. You are basically "on your own" to try and find suitable drivers.

However, if you installed the Chipset drivers, Windows should either install a generic driver or find suitable drivers.

The correct install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install chipset driver (3) Install Device Drivers.

On Intel systems the chipset drivers define what is on or attached to the motherboard. I assume the AMD drivers do the same thing.Click to expand...

A:Dell site won't help me. How do you get XP Pro (64bit) to work on Dell 531S?

Hi there

The very best database for drivers is . You need to create a free account to gain access.

What the tech suggested was installing enough drivers to get your networking to work and then letting Windows find all the missing drivers automatically using the now working internet by selecting the option "search for drivers automatically" when installing the devices through the add/remove hardware applet in the Control Panel.

Any ideas please I can capture hd video from my panasonic ok but when I place the thumbnails for editing the programme crashes on preview. I am a beginer but suspect this may be an OS problem rather than the editing software
any thoughts welcome

A:corel video studio x 4 crashes

Usually, in general, video editors crash because they are trying to handle a wide variety of codecs and file locations and edit fact they crash so much that Pinnacle Studio put a nice built in automatic quick save feature so when it inevitably crashes, I can pick up right where I left off when I restart it...other editors just crash on me...DOH!

Also assuming you are trying to edit AVCHD video, it can be a little hard on computer resources, especially on a laptop; your specs are pretty decent but still not as capable as a good desktop.

What format are the files from the camera in? I would try converting one video with Format Factory (or another compatible one) to another high quality setting format, like AVI with a 10000 or 16000 bitrate and then see if that worked ok. If it does then its something about the video format that the program can't handle and if it crashes then it probably is a system/OS problem.

I have a Dell Xps/410, running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. Intel Q6600 2.4GHz. processor, Nvidia 8600GTS 256 video card with 250 Gb. SATA II hard drive and Creative audio.
Everytime I try to install the WIndows 7 BETA version it doesn't recognize the CD. I have made the CD-ROM first priority in the system's BIOS but it still doesn't work. Anyone have any suggestion? Would this happen to have something to do with my system being a DELL?
Or maybe I should consider wiping the hard drive first and then trying to install Windows 7 version.

My problem is that I am trying to restore a friend's Dell Studio 1555 laptop back to its factory settings, I follow the procedure mentioned on Dell's website however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option. I have checked the laptop's Disk Management and there is a Recovery partition, in fact there are 3 partitions:

1. A 39MB OEM partition with no letter assigned.

2. C: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) 451GB.

3. Recovery: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) 14.65GB.

In short, when the computer starts I hit F8, I enter the Advanced Boot Options and select Repair Your Computer. I then select the language and login with the administrative account, however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option there. My options are shown the image below:

Another issue that concerns me is that on the picture above it says Windows 7 on (D: ) Local Disk, however there is no such partition on the laptop's disk.

I would be thankful if anyone could give some advise on how to restore the laptop to its factory settings using the recovery partition. Thank you.

A:Dell Studio 1555 to factory settings,no Dell Factory Image option

On a Dell, if some other OS was installed, the Dell "PC Restore" (Recovery Partition) is no longer valid (corrupted) and the only way to reinstall is with a Windows OS installation disc and then download whatever device drivers you need from the Dell downloads.

I upgraded to Windows 10 and when I debug my websites from Visual Studio using IE 11, IE just closes. All I can see is in VS's Output [Debug] Window is:

The program '[984] iexplore.exe' has exited with code -1073741790 (0xc0000022).
The program '[6600] w3wp.exe' has exited with code 0 (0x0).

These lines are after successfully loading several assemblies.

I was using VS 2013. I uninstalled 2013, cleaned everything up and installed VS 2015 and I'm still having the same issue.

If I use Edge, Chrome, FireFox or Safari everything works from VS. If I start IE using Ctrl+F5 it works. It's only when I choose to debug with IE it fails.

It fails whether or not the website is hosted by IIS or IIS Express.

IE has better integration so I prefer to use it for general debugging. How do I fix this?
I've disabled all add-ons, reset Security to default, and reset all my setting in IE to default.  I've uninstall IE and reinstalled it. I performed a Repair on VS.  Made sure to have all the latest Windows Update.  No good on any of this and
I can't figure out how to get more info on why it's failing.  There is nothing in the Event Log and I also enabled CrashDumps and no files show up for this issue.  I ran ProcessMonitor and nothing stands out as the issue there either.
I created a new blank web project and added one web form to it with text to test with.  No JavaScript or anything and IE11 fails to load when running in debug mode from VS.... Read more

Hi, guys.

I'm new here, and I have a strange problem.

When I leave my PC idle for about 30 minutes, the screen goes black and stays that way as if the PC has crashed. I move the mouse about and hit the keys on the keyboard, but nothing works: the screen just stays black. In fact, even the little lights on the keyboard (e.g., the Caps Lock light) don't work. Everything just seems to die.

Whenever this weird crash thing happens, I have to reboot my PC, after which everything starts to work again. It happens every time I leave the PC idle. It also happened once when I tried to play a video.

I've had the PC for a few years. It's never done this before. The problem's not being caused by any settings. Hibernate is disabled, and all power settings are configured to never turn off.

My OS is XP Professional, and I'm using Service Pack 3. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
