Quick question about Lenovo and Superfish

Q: Quick question about Lenovo and Superfish

This is a quick question. I purchased a Lenovo laptop a few years ago with Windows 8 pre-installed.. it didn't work with any of my peripherals so I ended up doing a clean install of Windows 7... Am I right in assuming this would eliminate any Superfish issues with my computer? This is of course assuming that it was even installed on my Lenovo in the first place.

Thanks!

Frank

So, the Lenovo and Superfish debacle is getting a ton of press. But the one thing that I haven't read about is how Lenovo plans to fix this massive error of theirs.

Anyone have any ideas how a fix of this scale could be implemented to end users? Or should we batten down the hatches in expectation of a TON of man in the middle attacks?

A:Lenovo and Superfish

Hello there,Lenovo had released instructions on how to uninstall Superfish. Alternatively you can root it out with a lot of AV products on the market (even Microsoft Security Essentials will detect it).A discussion about Superfish is here.Alex

I just got a new Laptop, so I went to check to see if I got everything I ordered. I went into system information and after Processor it
says I have a x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8 Genuinintel 798mhz. Thats not what I ordered. But when I go into system properties it says I have a Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz, which is what I ordered. So which processor do I have.

An explination would be very helpfull Thanks in advance.

A:[resolved] Quick question hopefully quick answer

I am 99% sure you got what you ordered. Go to start, run, and type in 'dxdiag'. It should say on the first page for sure what you have.

Hello everyone,

Thanks to Lenovo I had the opportunity to test and use the new Yoga 900S. As I also have Yoga 3 Pro I'll also compare the two.

Size, weight and build quality.
Yoga 900S is smaller and lighter (by 200 grams). However, they're both skinny 12.8mm thick.
The materials appear to be the same, but somehow 900S has much more metallic feel to it. It also feels more sturdy. It might be related to the smaller size of the 900S. The case on the inside has more of a leather feel to it compared to the rubbery feel in Y3P.

Keyboard:

I have mixed feelings with this one, because:
+ dedicated F~ key row - great!
+ 2 level backlight - love it too.
- much lower key travel compared to Y3P, but still comfortable enough.
? awkward placement of the right shift key. This could just be me, as I got used to Y3P's layout, which had the right shift key on the left side of the up arrow key instead of the right side.

Touchpad:
Slightly smaller, but still comfortable to use. I have no remarks. It does its job. It happened couple of times that the cursor jumped to the bottom right corner when I tried to click using left index finger while swiping with the right index finger. Not sure what happened, but it was so minor I'm suprised I still remember it did!

Screen:
The model I received has a Full HD screen (1920 x 1080). I've seen 1440p being mentioned around the net, but this particular model definitely has a FHD screen. I ... Read more

My problem started after I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 Pro to the free release of Windows 10 Pro.Since the upgrade completed, every time I start the laptop I am shown the following warning:>>>>>> AMD Quick Stream ErrorThe license information to use this software is not found <<<<<<<<<Apart from that, all seems working right. After starting Windows 10, I remove the pop up warning and go through my session without experiencing any inconvenience.Yet, willing to do away with that warning, I download from the AMD site the latest graphics package for Windows 10, and installed it in the machine. That was to no avail, the warning keeps showing up. My machine is:Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E335Processor: AMD E2-2000 APU with Radeon(trademark) HD Operating system: Windows 10 64-bitGraphics hardware: AMD Radeon HD7340 GraphicsAny cue? Thank you for any suggestion you may have.

A:AMD Quick Stream errors after upgrading Lenovo laptop to W10

To solve this issue, you can do the following:1. Click the following link to go to the official website for AMD Quick Stream. Download the latest release by clicking ?Download AMD Quick Stream Technology?.http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-art...2. Launch the downloaded installer and follow the program to finish the installation. This should automatically uninstall the old version and install the new one. A reboot may be necessary when this is done. After these steps you should have the latest AMD Quick Stream up running. And the error can be fixed.

One of my laptop pc's has been infected with superfish.
It's a nasty piece of ads/malware sh*t that won't go away.
I'm trying a restore to an earlier backup.

Almost any webpage was attacked with a (blocked by Eset) superfish webpage attempt.

But I found at least a removaltool from Lenovo, who has been sued for selling thousands of infected PC's with their crap.

Hope that it may help others, cause malwarescans didn't do the job.
The only one blocking superfish webpages, was Eset virusprotection.

Superfish may be installed with some addon in your browsers, but it's also part of some malicious software with unwanted "applications". It behaves like a virus.
It may be installed in programs and applications, but that wasn't so on my pc.
Superfish has more names. It's difficult to track them all down. Which for instance reg.seeker may help.
It's a visual application, that implants "trusted certificates" in the roots.
It's a clear spywaretool, that may even steal your encrypted information, or track anything you do, like banking.

Just today, I got hit with the Bing bar and OffersWizard ads on Chrome, not account specific. I tried to remove them, and I even rooted out my extensions, yet nothing works. I used several adware removal programs and even tried to clean out some files, yet it keeps coming back.

One of them pointed me to superfish, and I tried deleting everything about it. I used adwcleaner, ccleaner, even tinkering directly with the registry keys, even a full settings reset yet, I can't get superfish out of the system. It just comes back when I open certain websites on Chrome. Only Google itself and other very secure sites aren't hit with this. I get all these superfish ads even on this website. And I can't find any unusual programs when I go to control panel. None of the other posts and sites covering this adware/malware are helping me.

I'm all out of options now... I might have to call in a technician, or worse, abandon my computer and get another one.

I just want to keep my computer safe...

Anyone, please help. Please...

EDIT: Guess I was being melodramatic. I had a "Network System Driver" installed on the same date. I uninstalled it and... what. That solved my problem? *Facepalm

I've been performing routine maintainance of a friend's laptop.  It's been over two months since I've done so.

Scanning in Safe Mode with Malwarebytes I found PUP.Optional.Superfish.A twice on the computer.  I quarantined them.

While I Safe Mode I also ran:

Rkill -- came back okay.

TDDSKiller -- came back okay.

AWCleaner -- came back okay.

And yes, I didn't stop at BleepingComptuer first, so I did not see the instruction and I ran ComboFix.  Sorry.

I ran TFC and restarted.

Once restarted, in normal mode I ran ESET and it came back clean.  Right now I am defragging, with almost 500 MB to defrag, so it's still going.

Windows Vista (Home)
Internet Explorer and Google Chrone.

A quick search online shows this is the kind of virus you get by downloading something when you shouldn't have.  This is exactly the kind of thing I keep telling my friend to [i]NOT[/io] do, but he ignroes me.  He'll search for something, like a manual for a product, and the first thing in the search resutls, regardless of what site it's on, he'll click on if it has the name/words he's looking for.  I've tried several ways to get him to understand.

He. Does. Not. Get. It.

And what's worse is he enters all kinds of personal information on the laptop.  And that quick search shows this particular virus can download other things onto the computer.  He's lucky this time.

1. I use Internet Explorer and whenever I try to go to my homepage - google, type a website into the browser, or use the google search box I am redirected to a superfish website.

2. I ran Trend Micro Hijack This v2.0.4 and was instructed to post the log on a forum since I am pretty clueless. I hopes that someone might be able to identify which item(s) from the log I am supposed to check and select "fix this" with Hijack This.

I apologize if I left out any pertinent information and am happy to provide any additional information that may be useful.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Below is the output from the log.

I have not had such an issue removing malware until this one. I say Superfish since it comes up with MalWareBytes every scan. IT is located in C:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Default\Local Storage\. Everytime Chrome opens.

I can remove the PUP, restart and be good to go until a few minutes running chrome. IE is not affected. It will not replicate. I have used Rkill to stop processes and followed with MBAM. I have used AdWCleaner and JunkWare Removal Tool. I have run a sleugh of others as well.

I have cleaned up the Programs list with what I feel are neccessary. No unwanted as far as I can tell. I have done my due diligence with this.

I have also removed Flash, Reader, and Java and have updated with latest versions from valid sites. I have disabled PepperFlash in Chrome and tried a default Flash but came back as well.

I have traced the infection to the registry (made a back-up first, but am pretty comfortable around it as well) and removed the points of infection there. It works great with IE but a few seconds after Chrome is opened, it's back. I have use Chameleon as well, thinking the browser themselves could be infected.

I believe it is a file dropper located on the computer. I thought I was successful with a program located in the TEMP directory associated with Mozilla but no luck.

SAS only picks up Tracking Cookies.
MBAM will pick up Superfish Located in same Directory stated earlier but no Tracking Cookies

Hello and to BleepingComputer.Let's see what we're dealing with here. Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.Link 1Link 2Link 3Link 4Before we begin, you should disable any anti-malware software you have installed so it does not interfere with RKill running. This is because some anti-malware software mistakenly detects RKill as malicious. I have an HP Pavillion running Windows 7.  We have satellite internet so we have to be very careful about our bandwidth.  Typically, in our house of six computers we use less than 1/2 gig per day.  In the last ten days, we have used 1.5 to 2 gigs per day and I believe most of it is coming from this computer as every time I scan it after it has been used it has one of the two pups on it or a trojan.  I use Malware bytes and Combofix.  The computer is only being used to play an off-line version of Diablo II and Facebook.  I suspect there is something buried deep that Malwarebytes isn't seeing until it pulls in a pup.  I am at work and in and out of meetings all of the time, so running scans and posting results is definitely something I can do, just not instantly.  I would appreciate any help I can get as we are 10 days into the month and have already used 75% of our bandwidth for the month.  Thanks in advance and I apologize if I have inadvertently broken any posting rules.  I tried to read all the pinned notes regarding how to post, but the phone kept ringing and I may have missed something.

Check in your Add/ Remove program for You Tube Accelerator...that is Goobzo....uninstall if there.
Since you are concerned about bandwidth, try the first two scans first. If the adware is still appearing
then do the Eset online scan.

You can open MBAM and change the settings to scan for rootkits....then run a scan after updating.

download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Delete.
Confirm each time with Ok.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

Run the ESET Online Scanner.

Although a little late in the coming, but nevertheless welcome, ESET Security has released a free standalone Superfish adware removal tool for Windows users. If you recollect, Superfish was recently in the news, after it was found that this adware came pre-installed on Lenovo laptops.

ESET Superfish Cleaner Tool
The Superfish malware replaces the advertisements on the website which the user visits, and replaces them with new advertisements which possibly benefit Lenovo and Superfish. This raises security concerns, since, when it intercepts HTTPS encrypted webpage to replace its own ads, it creates a mix of secure and insecure content, laying open the path for other hackers to potentially carry out its own attacks.
Soon thereafter, after issuing a statement and expressing regret about it, Lenovo posted instructions about how tomanually remove Superfish, and subsequently also released a SuperFish Removal Tool.

Eset Superfish Cleaner is a small 166KB sized portable tool, that instantly tells you if you have Superfish installed on your Windows PC, and if found efficiently removes the Win32/Adware.SuperFish malware completely. If you bought a Lenovo laptop recently, you an also first check online if you have Superfish malware installed on it. If you do find something, you definitely want to remove it asap.

Click here to download Eset Superfish Cleaner from their official website. The scan will run as soon as you start the tool. To exit, press any key.

Hello,
My aunt has some pretty bad malware on her computer. It's a laptop from 2007 formerly running Windows Vista, now running Windows 7.
Her computer use is limited to browsing TV piracy streaming sites. As many of these sites tend to be sketchy. and she's not very computer-savvy, I assume this is what lead to the infection. Her computer is also very slow, though that may or may not be related to this problem.
Clicking any kind of links in Chrome or Firefox will redirect you to fake sites or advertisements that try to get you infected. One particular site is (visit at your own risk)  www.microsoft-security-essential-alert-warning.com/threat.html , an obviously fake site that attempts to make you think your computer is infected with viruses and tells you to call scammer numbers.
Her computer has Avira Antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy. When running scans on these, neither picked up viruses. However, upon downloading and scanning (not cleaning) with AdwCleaner, I found items labeled "superfish.com", a malware name I'm familiar with, and "newplayer". NewPlayer is an adware media player, though my aunt rarely downloads things to her computer so I don't know how she got it.
Adwcleaner also found some things in Chrome extensions; I checked these and found "MPlayerPlus" installed in chrome, another adware virus. Note that the scam site I mentioned earlier has a broken ad banner on top, with subtitle "Ads by MediaPlayerPlus", though I'm not sure if this is part of the ... Read more

Hi Folks!

Just a quick USB question. I think I already know the answer, but I want to be sure. Can I replace my current 1.1 USB card with a 2.0 card by just removing one and then installing the new one? When I plug the USB cables from the stuff I am using now back in to the new card, will my computer just see them as the same stuff or will it think I have now hardware. I'm running XP SP1 Home Edition.

As always, thanks for all your help!

Okay.. wasn't sure where to put this question.
I'm going to be getting a second chord for my DSL, I have two computers and would like both of them to be net worthy.
My old computer has an ethernet card and all that..
My question is, should I just be able to plug in the chord, and go through the normal set up I did for the computer that is already on DSL? Or is there some networking thing I have to do as well? I would want to be able to use both of them at once on occasion, as this is a multi person household, and people get annoyed when another person asks to either a- check email b- look up things for games.. etc etc.

A:Quick Question

first thing, you will be needing a router to setup your very own home network. A router is advisable as this will give your computers the same internet speed. so basically internet goes into the router. both computer connect to the router. same speed on both pc's unlike a hub where the speed gets divided.

Hello
I have just bought a new laptop with windows 8 and actually quite like the tile setup!
Some programs I need to use are on the desktop and I regularly need to switch between desktop and start screen views. All I want to do is have an on screen 'windows button' that will take me from the desktop back to the start screen with a click of the mouse, as opposed to having to physically push the keyboard button.
I know this is ultimately lazy, but surely it should be simple and sometimes a mouse click is just so much easier than pushing the button!
Thanks everyone
Mark

A:Quick question!

Hello Mark, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could use step 2 or step 3 in the tutorial to also quickly open the Start screen from the desktop. Step 2 is for a Start button.
"Start" Screen - Open in Windows 8

If you like, you could also use a Start screen shortcut I created that could be pinned or used where you like in addition to the above.

Hope this helps,

This isn't concerning an infection, but HijackThis itself. Lately, I've been getting the following entry...

O23 - Service: McAfee Application Installer Cleanup (0283141179367147) (0283141179367147mcinstcleanup) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\028314~1.EXE (file missing)

It's nothing to worry about, but it bugs me having this entry show up, no matter how many times I tell HJT to fix it. Is there something else I could try to delete the entry (a registry edit perhaps)? Or should I just tell HJT to ignore the entry? (Before doing that, I'd like to know if there's a way to delete it altogether.)

A:Quick HJT question.

Aha! Nevermind about this one; I took my own suggestion of editing the registry. Just performed a search for "028314" and deleted two Services entries related to McAfee with that number. That did the trick. Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time.

ok, so for example:

an AM athlon 64 X2 3800+, the 3800+; is this a reference to the combined speeds of the cores on the chip? or is the 3800+ the individual speed of each of the two cores?

the reason I ask is this: I understand that dual core processors only fed a thread to each core individually, and thus, if a program is run, it will only use one core until the second core is needed for aditional threads. Hense, dual core processors are excelent for multi-tasking, but I want to make sure that the advertised speed relfects the speed one will get out of their processor should they only be running one program, i.e, GAMES!

A:quick question...

I'm no expert, but I think that it would make sense.

If your game takes up an entire core (which would be pretty big) your computer would still have room to manipulate data 'behind-the-scenes'.

I would think that it wouldn't affect game-play because of the second core.

But again...I'm no expert...

They're supposed to be exactly the same.

You have options for the download version. You can choose to create an .iso (disk image), which can be used to burn a DVD. I think that you can have the download directly written to a USB dreive or a DVD, but I preferred the .iso.

Hi, I am thinking about buying a CD/RW. I am prob. going to buy from Dabs.com's cd/rw page . I have found this drive ;click here , and it says "Formatted Capacity 650 MB" Does this mean that I can only use 650mb disks, and not 700mb ones? also, are there any better cd/rw on the market for about £50-£60?

A:Quick CD/RW question

I chased down that link for the CD burner, but I couldnt find where it said "formatted capacity: 650 MB." it is entirely possible that it will not burn more than 650 MB to a CD, as my (cheapo) burner won't burn more than 700 MB. Lite-on is a pretty cheap company...I just purchased a DVD-ROM made by them, but I can't say I have any complaints about it as of yet. Im not really sure how much 50 pounds translates into, but there are decent burners on the market for around 80 US dollars; Plextor, Sony, and TDK are all good companies offering CD burner solutions cheap. You may have to compromise on speed a little, but its no big loss since unless you have a blazingly fast computer, it won't use the full 32x burn speed. 24/10/40 is just fine, IMHO.

I need to know whether or not I can use the OS on a HDD which was in a prebuilt computer for an upgrade. I would be keeping the HDD because there is nothing wrong with it and it has all of my data on it. The parts I would be replacing would be the motherboard, CPU, Case, and RAM. I'd be keeping the sound card, HDD, Optical drive, and GPU (yes, it works fine).

A:Quick Question.

Once you replace the motherboard, that ends the use of that operating system while there are times a call to Microsoft and a "sob story" may get some sympathy, legally the answer is no. Now a retail version of Windows, that you bought if it is a retail version is another story but the code in it carries whether it is oem (original equipment manufacturer) or retail.

It's just that we have a crappy old terminal at work and the keyboard uses one of these plugs to connect to it (as opposed to a PS2 or serial plug), and the keyboard is goosed. I have grave doubts about finding a replacement, but at least if I know the name, it'll sound like I know what I'm talking about when I hassle the computer store!

I know you can run win2000 and win 98 on the same drive with partitions. But is there a way to get the dual boot option using 2 hard drives? Like when it asks win 2000 or win 98,can i make it boot the other drive for 98?

A:Quick question

If you are using a boot manager program, sure. It doesn't matter what drive the OS is on. I run Windows 98 from my second hard drive and NT from my main one.

I use BootMagic by PowerQuest.

since AMD price cuts, a duel core AMD became a VERY good deal but i dont know alot about AMD so i have a question

wuts the difference between an X2 6000+ and an FX-62?

the fx-62 is more expensive but i dont see a difference in specs
both have an l1 of 128+128
both have an l2 of 1x2
both are based on 90nm
both are AM2

in fact the x2 6000 has a greater clock speed

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103861

so wuts the deal?

A:quick question about AMD

hi totalgruzin,

the specs are the same because they are [basically] the same processor. they use the same core, same socket, etc.

the only difference I can see between them (besides the internal clock speed) is the multiplier. FX series have completely unlocked multipliers, where all other models are locked upwards.

that would only matter if you planned on overclocking (which I assume you're not doing, because high-end processors have very little overclocking headroom). at stock speeds the 6000+ should be slighty faster than the FX-62.

there may be a few reasons why it costs more. one reason may be that the FX-62 was out before the 6000+ was released (and before the major AMD price cuts) which means that Neweeg paid more for the FX-62 than they did for the 6000+. they don't want to lose money, so they leave the price where it is. the other reason may be simple marketing, if people think that the FX line is the best you can get (ideally that would be the case) than they can charge more money for it.

to sum it all up, out of those two choices go with the 6000+. not only is it faster, but it's also $130 less!

cheers

So, I have a pretty easy question for someone, but I cannot figure it out!!

Basically I was wondering why or more like how is it possible that I bought this laptop in 2010 (Alienware M11x R2) and it has an i5 CPU @ 1.07 GHz. Now my question is how that a computer bought in 2011 (Sony Vaio specifically) have an i3 CPU @ 2.2 GHz. Did technology really speed up that fast, or is my processor just lacking in some way? The reason I mention a Sony Vaio is because one of my good friends has it and I was checking his system specs and came across that. It really boggles me how that is even possible. A machine that is MADE for gaming compared to a machine that is made for school work. How/Why does his processor run at such a higher rate then mine.

Thanks.

I'm not sure where to post this question, but figured since it's about Hijack This it would probably fit in this category. Anyway, I have a new computer (not the one that is messed up and in the shop at the moment). My new computer is a "package" deal, Hewlett-Packard. Sorry, don't have the specifications on hand, but I'm not actually having any problems anyway. What I was wondering is this: These computers come loaded with all kinds of stuff you don't need/use. Would it be possible for me to post a Hijack This log and have someone tell me what I can safely remove that is just "junk"? Unfortunately, I didn't think of this before I loaded on all my own programs (which is quite a few), but would this still be possible? In the past when I have tried to "clean up" a new computer like this I always end up removing something that I need and then end up with problems. I can't get to posting a log until later this evening anyway, but I thought I'd find out if this was okay to do? Thanks!

Hello again everyone,

I was just wondering if AOL Instant Messenger puts anything nasty into your computer, mainly adware and such. What sparked my concern right away was that they give you the option of installing the AIM Weather Bug, which I know wouldn't be a smart idea.

So is AIM safe or should I trash it?

gennerally if you only install the AIM program (meaning without anything else like a toolbar or weatherbug) you shuld be fine. But there is always a risk from other users, links, etc...

A:quick question..!!

There is no correct way to partition a hard drive. You want a big drive for C to hold all the programs you want to install. But if you don't have a lot of programs, then this doesn't matter. Some people like a large partition somewhere to hold all their movies, songs etc.

A:Quick question about RAM

In theory they should work perfectly, in practice they often don't. It all depends on your mobo and what chipset it uses and how it was designed.

I used to use an MSI 745Ultra with 2x 256 pc 2100 and 1x 512 pc 2100 and it worked fine provided the 256's were in slots 1 and 2 and the 512 was in slot 3. But ram was slower back then.

I am in the market of purchasing a new comp or upgrading my existing one. I was planning to get a local computer place to customize my comp for me and build it. I won't provide specs because my question isn't technical, I have read hundreds of posts saying that getting someone to do it for you is best because they know what they are doing, others say get the parts yourself and give it to them to build (saving money and getting what you really want), or get the parts yourself and build it yourself. I am hesitant about the last one because I have never done anything like that before, although I have read that nowadays everything is straight-forward (eg, slot A into hole B). What does everyone suggest?

A:One quick question!

Let your local shop pick the parts according to your guidelines. This way, when you get any compatibility issues (your mobo doesn't like your video card for example), then it is the shop's fault and they should fix it.

If you give them a box of parts and tell them to assemble, then any compatibility problems are your own fault.

Perhaps being a bit narrow minded in my knowledge of current PC trends, but I am only now just hearing about the coming popularity of USB 3.0. I understand it allows for faster data transfer speeds and such. My question is as follows: will USB 3.0 make USB 2.0 completely obsolete anytime in the near future? I know Intel has said they won't support 3.0 in their chipsets until at least 2011, perhaps even 2012.

Both CPUs are Socket 478

CPU 1 -- Celeron 1.7 GHz, 128 K of L2 Cache 400 MHz FSB

CPU 2 -- Pentium 4 1.6 GHz 256 K of L2 Cache 400 MHz FSB

I can get additional specs on the Pentium 4 easily, but I'd have to put the Celeron 1.7 back in to get much on it

The Celeron says on it:

INTEL '02
CELERON
1.7 GHz/128/400/1.75V
SL68C COSTA RICA

EDIT: Here's the link to that processor: http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SL68C

Instruction Set x86, MMX, SSE, SSE2
Original Clock 1600 MHz

L1 Trace Cache 12K Instructions
L1 Data Cache 8 KB
L2 Cache 256 KB (On-Die, ECC, ATC, Full-Speed)

(A) Which is better?
(B) My Laptop has 512 K of L2 Cache and it's a 1.13 GHz PIII-M, how does it compare to these?
(C) I also have a 2 GHz P4 with 1 MB of L2 Cache in another machine, I'm not saying I would, but how beneficial would it be to use that in my desktop?

Basically registered and buffered ram have voltage control built in and are primarily used in server type situations.

Unbuffered has no such capability

ECC is error checking capable the memory itself can repair minor memory errors

Hi all, very new here and already with a question.

As I understand it there is an RTM version of Win 7 64 bit out there, and also that using a simple "rearm" trick a person could use this unactivated for 120 days (hopefully with no annoying popups/reminders). My question is, if someone did this then purchased Win 7 at the end of October could they just use that purchased serial number/activation on the RTM version they had installed... or would a total clean install be required?

Thanks for any help, nice forum you have here.

Okay, my turn to get some help. Came back to my laptop after the screen locked automatically (timeout set to lock screen after 30 minutes). When I moved the mouse to turn the screen back on, I saw "Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to unlock this computer". I was like "What the crap?" I've never had that setting enabled. So, I hit Ctrl + Alt + Del as required (we always have to do this on university computers, but I've never set this on mine) and logged in. After a little head scratching to remember the correct command, I typed control userpasswords2 into the Run box and saw this: Notice how the box to uncheck that option is greyed out and unclickable. Okay, now I'm flipping out.I knew there was another place this setting existed, so after visiting secpol.msc, I was able to put it back: http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/1441/enabled.pngBUT, the setting I looked at before is still greyed out:What the heck is going on? I haven't touched a single system setting in a long time. I walked away, came back, and suddenly I was required to do Ctrl + Alt + Del to log in for no apparent reason.I'm baffled.

A:Quick question...

Hey kn,

I did some looking around and found that this only seems to happen when the computer is connected to a domain, also there was a similar problem in vista but it never turned on automatically. So I really don't/ can't find an answer for you. But out of curiosity I just looked at mine and it it check-able. So I agree it is very strange indeed.

Hello, I recently bought windows 7 upgrade home premium online and installed it "fresh". Now if I upgrade my computer ie motherboard or hardrive or reformat later down the road, can I reinstall windows 7? Do I have to call up and let them know I upgraded or reformated like I had to with xp? Do they do that with windows 7?

A:Quick Question

Hello Freeman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, you can reinstall on your computer as many times as you like. If online activation should fail since you updated the motherboard, then you can just do a phone activation instead.

Hope this helps,
