Slow, slower...XP suggested I try here

Q: Slow, slower...XP suggested I try here

Everything was running fast and fine, and then "bam", things started slowing down. Going from page to page is like dialup. I have XP Home and from time to time when one user logs off, the screen goes black and we have to turn off and restart. I have run Spybot, Norton, CWShredder, etc. I also checked BlackViper, but I would rather have someone take a look a my Hijack before diving into my registry. The only thing I have installed in the last 3 weeks was the America's Army game. I uninstalled two days later.

Thanks,
Freakzilla

I have a problem with my Hitachi 3tb duo pro drive external hard drive. As i put more files it seems to get slower in one folder. An example is today, the access speed to find a patients name in it ( about 6k folders) would take about 30 secs. Before that it would only take 10 seconds and when i had about 4k folders it was pretty instantaneous. I've tried defrag, disk clean up, disabling background processes but I do not know how to solve this problem. Is the problem is too many subfolders in one folder? Or is there a solution to make it fast enough as I first started to use it. Yesturday it was not that bad but when i started today, it was unbearable. ANy feedback is appreciated thx.

A:Extkernal hard drive slow access speeds getting slower and slower

Well it depends how many loose files are in the folder. For instance say I have 10,000 pictures in one folder and that folder when I open it is taken for ever to load cause it is trying to cache all the contents and index all those files that are contained in it. If I go into that particular folder and create more folders lets say 10 folders, then place 1000 pictures in each folder then it will load a lot faster cause there not so many files in one folder to cache and index. Try and keep you files down to a moderate number of files inside the folders. It's like trying to stuff a bunch of paper inside a manilla folder it can only hold so many before it doesn't function any more....

Also most USB drives go idle and stop spinning after about 15 minutes usually, you can use the software that came with the drive to configure the usb to spin all the time. A 3tb drive is huge and I would consider partitioning the drive to 3 separate partitions of 1tb each that would speed things up considerably. Also 2tb is all that windows will see on a MBR partition if you want to keep it at 3tb then you will have to set it at a GPT (GUI Partition Table) for it to be used correctly in Windows 7.

Follow this tutorial on how to change the partition table from mbr to gpt:

I am ready to try the SDfix again...Problem is I can not get into Safe Mode. Keeps getting hung up on a process as it is listing all. I will write it down next time, It may help someone explain it to me.

Also What setting (& where can I locate it) may cause my WMP 11 to make my speakers sound busted? I have installed a new sound card (not the prob). I have installed at least 10 different media players this week to just see what I liked. In all of those the sound was fine. Songbird, Winamp,VLC, Itunes, Monkey,Foobar2000, K-lite, Qtime, MusicMatch & a few others. I really like the layout and fuction of WMP 11. Any Suggestions on how to fix my sound problem. Any thoughts on GOM Player, SMplayer, KMPlayer, AIMP 2,...I must have ripping & burning ability. I have read good things about AIMP2 think I will try it tonight.
Thanks in advance for your help

My computer has been running slow for about a month now and I can't figure out why. I have to restart my computer to make it run normally and then after a little bit it just slows down again.

Some things I have tried to fix this problem:

I have updated all my drivers.

I have cleaned the hard drive

I have defragged the disk

I have defragged and cleaned up registry errors

I have scanned my computer with malawarebytes and ESETnod and have used combofix

I have opened the computer case and cleaned it out

Still after all these things my computer still slows down and has to be restarted all the time.
Attached is my system specs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Computer running slow....have tried all suggested solutions

1) What do you mean you "cleaned the hard drive"?
2) What do you mean you "cleaned up registry errors?
3) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

I have an Dell Inspiron 630m laptop running Windows XP Home SP3 w/ 1.73 gHz & 504 MB of RAM. I have 7 GB of space left on my 40 GB harddrive. I tells me I do not need to defrag. My computer has been slowly getting slower when it comes to opening new programs, surfing the web, etc... I do not have any issues with pop-ups or other actions that occur on their own. I have eliminated unnecessary programs at start-up. This helped, but did not solve the problem. I have run SuperAntiSpyware abd McAfee scans with no results. Below is my HJT Log. I hope this is helpful info. If anyone needs more info, I will be happy to provide it. Thanks in advance for your help.

My computer has not shut down because of the problem, but I have shut it down manually because it seems to lock-up after waiting a couple of minutes for it to perform a task. Are there any other system scans I should run? Is my available harddrive capacity contributing to the problem?

My computer is a Dell Dimension XPS B866R, a Pentium III @ 866 MHz and is almost 5 years old. I have 512 MB of ECC unbuffered PC800 RDRAM. I am running Windows XP pro. Although this computer has never been a speed burner, just recently is has really s l o w e d down, almost to a stop. When I checked, I am showing 66 applications are running, the vast majority of which I do not even know what they are. How do I determine what each of those applications are? How do I determine what they do? And how do I remove, eliminate or shut down the ones that are not necessary? If there any other suggestions (yes I know I should be purchasing a new computer) please feel free to make them. Thanks and have a great day!

I posted a msg on June 23 but didn't hear anything from anyone. Maybe I posted in the wrong palce but My PC keeps locking up. It just isn't running correctly. I was hoping someone could take a look at my HJT file and tell me what is causing the prob. I have Win. XP I replaced the HD with a larger one. I run virus and spyware regularly.
The web pages take so long to load. Everything is just so slow and its annoying. I run XP. Also when I go to my add remove programs it takes a long long time for the list to populate....I do play a lot of games so there are a lot on my pc. I can't think of anything else that would cause this but here's my HJT .

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. This is an office computer used almost exclusively for water-agency related purposes - Email, writing and editing Word documents and PDFs, searching for, downloading and filing documents related to water production and distribution, to water quality and safety, and similar subject matter. Browsing outside that area of interest is pretty much limited to news media (AP, ABC, MSNBC) and Bleeping Computer. No personal Email or Web sites. "Shopping" pretty strictly limited to hardware or rarely software directly related to computer function or the water business. Lots of photos (taken by me) of water pipes, pumps and what have you. IrfanView to manipulate them. VLC to listen to audio files (meeting recordings) and view videos (of the insides of water wells).

Lately computer has been getting slower, until it takes a minute or more sometimes to load an application or a Web page. Avast! tells me there are many (60ish I think) unnecessary programs, etc., and offers to clean things up - I think for a fee, i.e. installing an additional Premium component. I love the Avast software but hate their marketing (surprise). So maybe first question: should I let Avast go ahead and do its stuff? I should say I readil... Use the programs below to find adware and malware. If you haven't run a scan using MBAM....do that, too.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.

My first post and I have read all the rules and guideline and the "Preparation before sending log", so I will do best I can. Under Task Manager I have always averaged running processes around 26-31. Now suddenly it runs about 41-46 open processes. I have ran all the programs you recommended before sending this. I also run CCleaner, Windows defender, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware regularly. No changes. Not sure of info you need so this may not be important...but here goes...I have no games downloaded or installed, just about 10 songs from WalMart and maybe 400 photos under MY PICTURES. There are several programs that came with PC I don't use but will later I hope, do I remove those? I hope this doesn't come across as more than one issue? A:Slow Pc Getting Slower

Hello cackle61 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. There are a couple of housekeeping items we could fix but let's try something else first.

Perform a System Restore and restore the system to a point before the problems started. Running multiple registry repair programs has probably corrupted the registry, especially since none of them can complete a scan any longer. Get rid of all of them but 1 and just stick with that one.

Let me know what happens.

Cheers.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP, Pentium M processor 1.60GHz 304 MHz, 512 MB RAM. My wife uses this computer to work from home, but she also does alot of internet surfing and purchasing. There are numerous issues that I need assistance with if possible. We use Norton Security Center for anti virus and anti spyware. We also use Windows Defender. In addition I have installed UniBlue Powersuite which includes Registry Booster, SpeedupmyPC and SpyEraser. I am comfortable using the computer and doing basic maintenance tasks but am not comfortable at all when dealing with issues such as these and what to do to fix them. We have a DSL connection and use a linksys wireless router to connect other users onto the home network. I realize that the issues below have a myriad of different causes. I assume that they all have similar root causes. if you have any suggestions on other diagnostic tools might help me with the below problems, I would appreciate it also.

1. It takes 10-15 minutes for the computer to start up.
2. The computer is continuously at 80-100 percent of CPU usage and 70-100 percent of memory usage.

4. When trying to get on the internet it takes 1-2 minutes for IE to load the first page. Once that has loaded it usually goes somewhat quicker, but still much slower than in the past.

I am not sure if running the Norton program, Uniblue program and Windows defender is an efficient us... Read more

Hi everyone!
Recently and all of a sudden my computer slowed down to a snails pace. It literally takes 10 minutes to open Outlook Express. The only way to do anything effectively is to operate in safe mode. I ran many different anti-virus progams, etc. (one at a time, installing and uninstalling each after use, not to have too many progams working against each other). Each program found many problems and fixed them. Now my computer shows clear of malware, but it sure doesn't act that way. Sometimes I get a message that says my computer is low on virtual memory. What could it be? I really hope you can help. Here is my HJT logfile while running in normal mode:

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.

My computer is Windows XP, a few years old. And we have a problem. There is a virus scan, well, virus. It is a fake program called Antivirus Plus. It just pops up with tons of little things saying something is wrong. We can't even access the internet on it. It already was slow, now, it is dying.

Hi everyone.
A few months ago my computer just slowed down completely. It takes over 10 mins. to open outlook express and other apps. Thinking it was a virus that my antivirus programs couldn't pick up I posted a thead in the HJT Forum. After a couple of weeks back and forth with an analyst, it was determined that my computer was infact clear of any malware. Since his efforts could not improve the performance of my pc, he directed me here. The only change I had made to my computer since is an upgrade to SP2.
To assist you I will include a link to my last thread.

Thank you for your help.

Just thought I point this out as it may be contributing to your system slowness.

Your using up 83% of your memory, which is ALOT. Also, your primary Hard Drive has 2 GB left on it, which is cutting it close for space. I prefer to leave 30-40% free space, so that the hard drive can perform better.

Also, if you want to free up some more resources I would disable programs from startup up like: BitTorrent & AVG Anti-Spyware.

You can easily call upon them at anytime. No need for them to always be running.

To disable programs from startup:

Start > Run > type msconfig > Click OK
-- Click the Startup tab
-- Look for BitTorrent and uncheck the box

Getting slower and slower. If I try to open something it times out. I've opened the unit and cleaned out the inside, I've defragged, I've run scans. Often images won't show when I open my email. Usually hangs up when trying to open anything. Don't know very much about computers. I'm at a loss! I've used AVG, switched to MSE, used Spybot. I use Firefox, hardly use IE. Please help. Also, What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Hello there,

I've noticed my comp has been a bit slower of late mostly not just for the net, but for opening programmes as well - even the 'favourites' list suddenly takes ages to load. Even programmes as basic as notepad seem affected. But the main issue is my 'clean disc' won't work. It got about a third of the way through and stopped, now it won't open at all.

I have AVG and ZoneAlarm running. Tried Spybot and Adaware, nothing. Tried Housecall, no viruses. Tried Pitstop, which said I needed to defrag, I was able to do that but I still can't clean the disc and the comp is getting slower and slower (and now refuses to even display google).

I've also noticed ZoneAlarm has been raising a lot more notifications than usual, but never to a named destination. The last ISP was 194.65.100.117NS.

Here is a HJT log from a few minutes ago, hope it shows something useful.

Good day out there, I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me on the problems I'm having with my HP laptop that I lent to my husband's children. When I first got it back it was slow, but as time has gone by it's so slow now that sometimes it can't keep up with my typing.
As I was looking at other people's posts about slow computers w/ high CPU usage (mine is also showing that), I read about looking at the task manager and disabling apps that I'm not using, that take up a lot of memory. As I was doing this and looking for other things I could get rid of I noticed that my D drive is almost full. !7.2 GB is full and 2.49 GB is left I have attached a print screen of the the files that were saved on it. Are they supposed to be saved there and if not is this what's causing my problems? If they're not supposed to be there, is there any way to get them off? Below is my system info. Thanx for any help.

I'm sorry to post but my comfuser is getting slower. While I'm waiting for a response on HijackThis, can I use a program to get rid of the viruses, or will a program even get rid of existing viruses or just prevent ones from attacking?

I already have Zone Alarm Pro. on a 15 day trial and spy sweeper free version. I also have the free version of Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D.

I hope this is not considered reposting being this is a diff. topic.

Thank you

Firstly Hi from a newbie

My pc is extreamly slow. Opening simple folders on my desktop takes ages, sometimes freezing up, forcing me to use Alt Ctrl delete however when I do the task manager will also freeze leaving lots and lots of its little green cpu usage icons in the task bar I can spend 15 or more min trying to exit them but then that method will also freeze I will then need to turn the pc off at the power switch. I have IE7 when I open it, it is frozen the first time I sometimes can exit without the whole pc freezing, usually on the 2nd go it will open but opening pages takes so long that it times out or may freeze anyway. Start up and shut down is also very slow.
I have managed to down load HJthis also the antimalware I saw on here.
I have included the Hijack log so hope this might tell us something

I am in rural area with no DSL or cable.

My dialup connection has always been slow but steady (26.4 kbps) until about a month ago. My wife uses ebay and when it takes over 5 minutes to load the main page she gets upset.

My connection still says 26.4 but the speed has gotten painfully slow.
Here is what I have tried (without improving on my speed):
-Repaced old USR 56k modem with new USR 56k and reinstalled with current drivers.
-Discovered had a trojan, did fresh install of windows (reformated HD).
-Switched from AOL to SBC-Yahoo. (did another fresh install of windows)
-Had SBC check phone lines. They have told me some inconsistant information. When they do a line check (with phone and computer unplugged) I have been told there is a short. They have done some repairs, rechecked and found a short, repaired and found it OK. They ran a shielded wire from road to my house.
-checked hosts file, only one entry for localhost

-Not sure what this tells me, but when I "ping www.ebay.com", it says:
"Pinging hp-core.ebay.com (66.135.193.124)...
request timedout
4 packets lost

I can ping techspot.com with no lost packets and avg time 179ms.

-tracert www.ebay.com takes about 5 hops before it timesout.

I don't know if the phone lines.the isp or my computer are the problem. I plan to have SBC recheck lines, I am thinking of going to circuit city and buying a new computer just to see if I get a better connection with new machine.

I really feel the computer is infected somehow with some kind of malware/spyware software. I want a professional to read my logs. I did all the scan required (GMER and DDS). I really hope to have an answer asap.

I know what you're going to say, Spyware and Virus scan, I already have with AVG 8.0 and with SuperAntiSpyware.
It's so slow. When I play a Two-Dimensional game like MAPLE STORY. I lag. And my specs are NOT bad...I have a GOOD computer..well it use to be. But it shouldn't be THIS slow.
and it HAS been faster before.
I reformatted around a couple months ago.

It has had some problems in the past with overheating, and whenever I turn on my computer, it says..."Your computer has shutdown from overheating, Check your Mother Board, Press F1 to bypass." But...my computer HASN'T shutdown from overheating..it just says that..Which is relatively new.
I literally can't do **** with this computer...and I can't afford a new one right now. 100%CPU Usage is almost NORMAL now. Watching videos on YouTube makes it 100% too.

I don't know what to do...any ideas? ;~;

Hello and welcome to TSF

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

My PC is running very slow and hanging on everything. I've recently installed Mcaffee which found a bunch of adware but it hasn't helped making it any faster, if anything it's made it slower. I've read several other threads and that does nothing but confuse me more. I've downloaded and ran the hjt program and will post the log. I also only have 128 MB of ram with a P3 930Mhz is that enough ram? Please help!

Thanks!

Hello, I have a problem. I am having some issues with my laptop which is not 1 year old. The system is very slow. On battery, the computer is almost unusable. I really feel the computer is infected somehow with some kind of malware/spyware software. I want a professional to read my logs. I did all the scan required (GMER and DDS). I really hope to have an answer asap.

My Dell 8300 has been acting different from its normal self for over a month. I attempted a system restore to a previous time, but none would take.

Sometimes, when it is shut down, it doesn't completely shut down. The hard drive stays active, but the monitor acts as though the system is shut down. The shut down takes much longer than usual.

On boot, the splash screen does not appear in a smooth manner, but a choppy one.

I am subscribed to AVG and it is up-to-date.

I booted the pc into safe mode and did a virus scan. Nothing was found. I ran Spybot S&D in normal and safe modes. Nothing relevant was found.

There is no new hardware or software. This came about shortly after my external, second hard drive failed.

Today, despite being connected to the DSL modem, the pc wanted to dial a connection when I opened a web browser. The pc had been online since this morning, so I didn't know what was wrong. I clicked send/receive in the email software; it reported that the pc was offline. I checked the connections and all were intact.

Any suggestions?

Cass

Lately my computer is getting slower and slower. I try to clean it up often, I do regular backups and the heaviest software that I use is Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Firefox. Firefox is getting impossibly slow, I have deactivated all my plug-ins except for Zotero (citation manager) because I use it, but I think it is the culprit of firefox being sluggish. I am ready to switch to Chrome.

However, lately every time I open MyCompter icons take a while to load. Double clicking takes longer than normal and copying files from one place to another is long. iTunes takes a good two minutes to open and well, you get the picture.

Here is my HiJack this log:
If a kind soul could help me to determine what might be wrong and what I could do to fix it, I would be eternally grateful. I know there are a lot of Toshiba processes running there but I'm weary of uninstalling them.

Desktop 300S-11IBR, Running Windows 10.Bought yesterday morning. It took 24 hours to install all the windows 10 updates because even connected to a LAN, this thing is slow as molasses. I've finally got all the updates done so I know it's not something downloading in the background and it's still slow - 20 seconds to load a blank Google page. I tried updating drivers - the one for the LAN did nothing. The bluetooth one went through the motions and then spit out an error (something something this driver is set for deletion.) I can't turn off wi-fi or bluetooth via the device settings because the option (that sliding bar) isn't there. I was able to use a real computer (HP) via wi-fi to search for solutions. It's amazing I can have 5 tabs open on the HP and whatever I click pops up or downloads in a second, but I turn that off and go over to the Lenovo and I'm waiting 20 seconds for Google. Is there a solution hidden somewhere on this website?

My Toshiba Satellite L955 (Windows 8.1) is slowing down more and more almost every day. Restarts take 5-10 minutes. Processing seems to be at a crawl sometimes when working with Excel files. Chrome moves extremely slow sometimes - especially when trying to open after restart or after closing Chrome and trying to reopen.

Running Trend Micro Internet Security. Also running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

No evidence of any viruses or malware.

What can be causing this? It's driving me nuts!

A:Laptop Moving Incredibly Slow - Getting Slower

Suggest that you monitor what is happening on your system via Task Manager.

In the "Processes" area of Task Manager you need to activate the column "Process Name" which gives you the actual executable filename. The first column "Name" is too generic to be really useful. What you need to monitor is the actual name of the file that is using the system resources.

Our main computer is in the shop having the chipset fan fixed. The kids have been complaining that our old computer that they use for their ipods and general internet use was really slow. So with extra time on my hands I have been playing with it. They were not kidding, this beast does not MOVE, freezes, etc. I deleted quite a few old games, downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, ashampoo win optimizer, tuneup utilities, and uni blue from this site. defraged through tunup utilities and ashampoo, loaded microsoft IE 8 (was running 7, I think)

Am running windows xp home 2002 Service pack 2 on dell desktop

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I am ready to toss this puppy!

A:Older Dell Desktop Slower Than Slow! Please Help!

How much RAM is installed?

System model?

How much free space on C:? How large is C:?

Have you removed anything that really is not essential, as programs go? Such as toolbars?

<<...ashampoo win optimizer, tuneup utilities, and uni blue...>>

I would uninstall each of those programs, using Add/Remove Programs...then check system performance.

I further suggest that you remove the HJT log data from your original post (edit it) because leaving it posted will result in this being treated as a malware problem/situation...which may be inaccurate.

Hi! Bleeping computer has been extremely helpful to me on earlier occasions and I'm sure I wont be disappointed this time around either.
My home computer is being used by two users. I am the main administrator.
Recently I've noticed a prolonged start up and shut down time. All applications including 'windows explorer' take a long time to open. I have installed AVG antivirus but there are no traces of virus or spyware.
The most weird thing is that the computer just get stuck for around 2 minutes once every half an hour. The entire system just doesn't respond at all, then after 2 minutes or so, everything is back to normal.
Please help.

Had a CD-R/RW Drive that's over 2 years old now that ran at 40x 10x 40x (or something like that....that's what aida32 said anyways)

I bought a Plextor model PX-W5224TA and installed it.
It's supposed to be 52x 24x 52x and is described by every review i've ever read of it as "lightening fast".

Only it's not for me.In fact it doesn't read or write as fast as my old hunk of junk.In fact it's almost twice as slow.

I must be incredibly retarded but i can't figure out for the life in me why it's SO slow.It doesn't seem to be defective and the settings in the software i installed with it "PlexWriter" show the speed as is high as it can go.

Did i miss something?

My internet connection is running slower and slower starting on or around the middle of March. Other functions of the computer don't seem to be affected. I ran all the antivirus programs, deleted cookies, did all the things I should do. I went to Manage Add-ons in Explorer just to see if anything had changed since I started noticing the slow down and there have been several new additions as of 03/13/2010 prior to that date was 11/09 and a change about every other month prior to that, but always the same programs, these are new. I have attached a PDF of the files, dates of use, status, ....

I looked up each file and found that Act.UI.InternetExplorer.Plugins.AttachFile.CAttachFile along with any other pertaining to this name has been a problem for several people. They have suggested in different Forums that a HJT is needed. Is this true? If so, where do I go to find the correct program? I disabled any item that referred to Act.UI... and Explorer seems to be running better this morning, but it is still early and it usually starts to slow after a while.

Also, when shutting down my system I have always had it set to Shut Down only now it continually changes to Shut Down and Update System. What is causing the change? and how do I stop it?

I am accomplished in different programs, but not so in the actual programming of the system, so please be as direct in layman’s terms as possible. Thank you for help!!!

Okay, here is what is happening. It started slowing up about a month ago so I did some tweeking and changed virus protection to Microsoft Security Essentials. I have uninstalled and cleaned up registries, I have done everything I know to do and now it has become almost completely unresponsive. The pointer will still move but any tasks I assign it takes FOREVER or doesn't do it at all.

A:Laptop slow, slower and now has virtually stopped

"cleaned up registries' - that worries me.
What EXACTLY did you do?
What was your prevoius Anti-Virus? - Had it been kept up-to-date until you installed MSE?

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

Hi David ,Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem. Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.A backdoor Trojan can allow an attacker to gain control of the system, log keystrokes, steal passwords, access personal data, send malevolent outgoing traffic, and close the security warning messages displayed by some anti-virus and security programs.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the Operating System. This is my 3rd fresh clean install, using both Vista x86 and x64, and all new hardware as well (new mobo, HD's, cpu, ram, etc):

symptom:
after a day of two of creating a user account, the HD access starts to become excruciatingly slow, and gets slower with time. When you use explorer and want to access the Hard drives, the system takes 3-7 seconds to open the folder. When browsing pictures, it takes 3-6 seconds to switch to the next, etc.
Creating a new user account solves the problem temporarily, until a day or two passes, and then the same thing starts to happen!

What I've tried so far:
- Disabled Indexing (windows Search service)
- Disabled Hard Drive Indexing
- Tried booting up as IDE, as well as AHCI
- Created new install with RAID0, and same issue.

System:
* e8400
* Asus P5Q-E with latest bios
* 2 x 320 WD 3200AAKS Sata drives, 1 x 250 WD 2500AAKS Sata drive
* Asus SATA DVDRW drive
* 4 GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 (DDR2-800)
I've noticed this problem accelerates even more when using the "sleep" power mode. But even when disabling this, It still happens.

I've googled for over 2 weeks. I've done 3 fresh installs, I've replaced all the HW, and used 3 different copies of Vista Ultimate, with same results!

UPDATE: here is a video of the problem:
YouTube - Windows Vista Hard Drive performance issue

A:Slow hard drive access times, gets slower with time!

Instead of disabling indexing in the services menu, try setting it to manual. In your hard drive's property sheet, on the general tab, check 'index this drive for faster searching'. See how that works?

Btw, are there any other services you've disabled? That may be a problem. Vista is pretty good about services, unlike XP, and you really don't need to go disabling a bunch of them. Doing so may cause more problems than it's worth.

However, if you must, I would advise setting services you don't want to manual... just in case... and follow Viper's guide: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

I bought my laptop about a year ago, and back then it was absolutely amazing. But with time it has become slower, and I'm wondering if you could help me with some tips on how to make it run faster in games like Borderlands 2, Minecraft and Watch Dogs.

some of my specs are:
Intel Core i7-4700M
NVIDIA GeForce 780M
x1 SSD 125GB (Main, windows installed here)
x1 HDD 1,5TB (Secondary, steam, games etc installed here)
Resolution: 1920 x 1080

Please tell me if you need more information.

A:Gaming laptop getting slower and slower, tips needed

Defrag, clear cache's, uninstall unused programs/games.
Check for dust buildup.
Think about and take a look at the programs you now have versus initially. If they are not needed right away, set them to not auto load with windows. Run as needed instead of always on.

Check the manufacturer site for and update drivers. (Video, audio, USB, ect. )

The more stuff you add, the slower it will get, so trim it back to what you need and it should speed back up.
Also check that your antivirus has a game mode, as antivirus are the largest slowdown of a system.

I guess it is also possible that over time the PSU and hardware can wear down and have trouble performing, but try the cleaning and stuff first.

Running XP on IBM ThinkPad. Have run all virus finders/scans recommended on BC but can't get to root of problem. Everything runs slower and slower. Often I get message saying "Windows Virtual Memory minimum too low, your system is low on virtual memory; Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file." I think this is evidence that malware is sucking up system resources, as I use the laptop for only email and can't possibly be straining the virtual memory.Have tried to clean the darn thing with Panda ActiveScan Pro, Norton AV, Spyware Doctor, Ad-Aware, McAfee Stinger and Spy Sweeper; sometimes they find malware and remove it but the problems remain. Sometimes they hang and I have to shut the darn thing down and start over.CLEANMGR wil not run, Windows update produces WUAULT error.Help, help, help please. Hi,After reviewing your log, it has been determined, that there are no infections present on your computer. Not every Computer problem is caused by malware. Please create another Topic, in the Windows XP Home and Professional forum, with a thorough explanation of the problems you're experiencing, such as:How long have you had this problem? What have you done to try and correct this problem? Is this a persistent problem. or does it just occur occasionallyHave you installed any new hardware/software recently? What were you doing when this problem first started? The exact Error Messages, you may have received.etc...Please also include:Operating System (XP Home, XP Pro, etc.)Browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.)Antivirus usedSpyware/Malware programs usedBy including as much information as possible, we will better be able to understand your problem, which will result in your computer being fixed, in the most timely manner.Do NOT post a HijackThislog there. Also, to avoid confusion, mention that you have already posted a HijackThis log, and it was found that you had no infections. This will prevent others from suggesting, that you post a HJT log for examination.Since there were no infections found, on your computer, I will now close this Topic. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me.

Hi I hope someone can help a person who knows nothing about computers.

I have had my laptop for over 2 years but over the last 3/4 months my internet has become slower and slower and now when I come to type in a search critera in it just freezes. I have tried to search 192.168.0.1 but do not understand what I am looking for I just gets lots of forums coming up suggesting I visit the same site.

If some one could help I would be very grateful as currently I am thinking of cancelling my package as i'ts not worth having if I cant use it. I am currently with sky and have visited "my sky" to see if I can resolve this issue. It states the package we have offers speeds of upto 20mb but we were advised we would get 4mb???? when we took out the package (cant remember this). My computer is a emachine laptop with windows vista basic. Sorry this is all I can tell you

I am not sure yet but i think sleep/hibernation is the culprit. I think Windows becomes slower and slower after several sleeps/hibernations. CPU gets more spikes and hard disk is frequently active and slow (when i do something simple, like opening folder, resuming music playing after long time, resuming YouTuben videos playing after long time and especially when MSE antivirus updates itself the hard drive slows down for 3 minutes until MSE is finished). But if i restart computer everything goes back to normal.

Here are my system specs:

Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz
1GB RAM
80GB Hitachi SATA 150
GeForce Go 2400
Windows XP Home 32-bit

Although I never had problems with spyware/virus etc I was scared into buying antivirus software and a firewall. I opted for McAfee because it was on special. After installing it, my PC slowed to a near halt. Every single thing I do is very slow. I defraged, ran spybot s/d, cleaned internet trail, deleted heaps of unused programmes/photos/music with eraser, all to no avail. PC is still slow. What can I do?

Uninstall McAfee comes to mind.
Try the (free) AVG7 instead from www.grisoft.com or the (free) Avast! from www.avast.com

Hi, this is my first post so please direct me if I'm doing anything wrong. I've read some of the topics but I'm a bit nervous about changing much on my computer. You all seem very smart at this stuff so any tips or help is greatly appreciated. I cleaned up several things like all of my temp files, etc. I also defrag'ed my HD again. I'm sure I've probably got too much stuff running on this computer (Dell 4550 P4 2.4GHz 2GB RAM XP Home). My wife and daughter both use this computer for various things and I do my best to keep it clean. I've pasted a HJT log below hoping this points to some things I need to remove. Hi,My laptop has been steadily getting slower and slower, freezing if more than a couple of windows are open and it crashed today leaving me with a black screen and a mouse. When I rebooted it it needed to be restored to an earlier point because of damaged files.I had tried removing progams, pics and old files. Also, my computer says that I am using CA anti-virus which I have not used in over a year and a half. SuperAnti Spyware also says I am running CA Antivirus and Firewall (as activated). It has been uninstalled from my computer and does not show in my list of progams which can be uninstalled (under Windows Control Panel).Next, when I was running a symantec check (I am a student and use the corporate edition) I saw two files that I can not find when I search my hardrive, but the anti-virus didn't recognize it as a virus. They both had unusual names, appeared to be directly on my C:// drive and one ended in a .pif extension. (Of course it flew by my screen so quick that I would never had seen it if I hadn't been looking at that program at that moment and I am unsure if the other even had an extension.)Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give me. I have a small web business and of course I use the laptop far more than my desktop. I have backed all the pertinent files up...but still...Finally, does anyone have a registery cleaner/repairer they recommend, if any at all? Thanks in advance!!-Learning in VirginiaI followed the instructions in the Preparation Gu... The performance of my desktop went slower remarkably, in terms of startup loading and opening/closing folders, loading of games..but no graphics lag when I am already in the game, idk what was the issue, but multi tasking became a big headache.

It all started after getting a retarded virus from my sch's lab that turned all my files into shortcuts, I solved that..luckily, and also installed Microsoft Security Essentials to wipe the virus off my TD, and amazingly it found some spyware transferred to my computer as well, all ran smoothly after that, until it kept updating my computer with the latest updates, when i already disabled windows updates earlier, didnt want to get any problems after updating..bleah, talk about now.

EDIT: I cant pinpoint when the BSODs occur, its almost random, when im playing music(alone & idle), games, opening a mail..yeah almost random.

Anyway really appreciate the help that you guys provide to us strangers :)!

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, and I did a few searches about slow boots, but nothing seems like the problem I'm having.

I just switched from a MSI KT3 Ultra 2, with a Athlon xp 2000 cpu and 1 gig of ddr 333 memory (2-512 sticks) to a MSI K8T Neo-V with a Athlon64 3700+ and 1 gig of ddr 333 mem, and now boot up time is twice as long.

All I changed was the motherboard and the processor, the memory is the same from the previous board.

I have 2 pcs I use, one is for a gaming computer(as a server,the one I just upgraded) and one I play games on. (MSI K8N - Neo, AMD 64 3400, 1 gig mem).

The old board with the KT3 ultra2 with the xp 2000 cpu would load up to the welcome screen in 45 seconds. Now that I changed it to a faster CPU its slower starting up.

For example, the old one would start up in 45 seconds, now it takes 85 seconds. Since I upgraded, it takes 12 seconds to start the Windows XP load screen, then another minute before it gets to the Welcome screen. Unfortunately I cant compare the faster time from the old once since its dismantled. I did try unchecking ALL start up programs except for Trend Micro and made absolutely no difference.

Could it be possible that previous settings or whatever from the earlier motherboard are slowing it down? Is there a program or utility that logs the start up and shows how long it takes to load each process, so I can possibly see what it is hanging on?

Once again I am new here, and already Ive seen abou 10 progra... Read more

I have wireless Linksys router (WRK54G) and I've been having computer problems as of late. I have a recent post where I said my internet wouldn't connect and I did a system restore and it worked. Well since then my connection has been getting gradually worse and worse, until last night I tried to repair my connection and I couldn't find acquire a new address. So finallly after doing 4 system restores I got my internet working again, and I'm determined (with your help of course) to fix this problem.

Hi all,

My SONY VAIO VGN-TX3XP has been my business PC for a while.
Recently, I got it back into business, but I noticed that it is extremely slow.

I do not care of the data already there (have been moved to other PCs) but I really need to have this one working in a proper way. Well at least not have the IE open after 4-5 minutes after pressing the IE icon.

Is there a way to figure out what slows it down, as well as fix what ever can be fixed?

Thank you in advance,
DIONYSIS

A:My Sony VAIO is getting slower and slower

Yes I'm starting to think these are not a great comp at all!, I brought a brand new sony vaio laptop which is top end of the market. and it also take 2-3mins for explorer to start, the operating system takes atleast 3-5mins before you can do anything, other than that it just frozen. No viruses, running windows 8. but I have an old pent 4 , 2.8 dual processor running xp that flogs the arse off it.
I found this on another site to see if there is any conflicts with explorer.
run cmd and type sfc /scannow
and let it run.
cheers

Hello,
I have AOL and I use old-fashioned Dial-up to connect to the internet with my Dell 4700. I have always connected at around 53 KBs (53333 Bps) consistantly, but I have recently noticed my connection speed getting slower and slower. It went down to around 49 KBs, and now it is around 40 KBs. What could be causing this? The modem??

I regularly run Spyware and Virus scans, so I highly doubt that is the problem. Thank you for your time.

I built my latest PC and upgraded the Windows 10 Home 32 bit to 64 bit back in December. I have 32GB RAM and have an I7 processor. My boot times continue to get slower and slower the past several months. I have googled solutions and tried many including booting into safe (no faster), using msconfig and the bootlog and verbose boot log and disabling services etc. Nothing seems to improve it. The OS is on a 256 GB OCZ SSD. I would love suggestions to speed up the boot which is about 4 minutes now. Would doing a clean install with a newly purchased Windows 10 Home or Pro solve it. That is my last choice. Thanks for reading.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi there
an SSD should boot up in SECONDS -- have you any other partitions or boot managers on the SSD.

A good test for you -- download a copy of Free Macrium and take an image of your OS -- even if you backup to a USB 2 device you should be able to back the thing up in around 20 mins.

If you have USB 3 devices then you should see the backup being completed in about 7 mins for a typical system --with yours it should be faster with an i7 and SSD.

If the backup takes forever then I'd suggest replacing the SSD. They don't usually degrade though - they either work or don't work.

Having backed up the system just try a complete re-install -- don't bother with serial numbers etc - just do an install and try boot. You can always restore your old system after the test.... Read more
