Filling a 3rd memory slot of a Dell B Series desktop

Q: Filling a 3rd memory slot of a Dell B Series desktop

I purchased what was described as a 'Dell 3588D Motherboard Slot 1 Dimension
XPS-B' motherboard from eBay. It uses Rambus memory sticks, but has 3
memory slots to fill, while every motherboard of that type I have researched only
has 2 memory slots. In addition, most of the Series B desktops I looked into
seem to be limited to 512MB of memory.
Because my motherboard has 3 memory slots, would I be allowed to insert three 256MB memory sticks, giving me a total memory of 768MB? I'm told that you should
not exceed the required limit of memory. Would someone care to comment on my
predicament?

Hello. I have this odd problem in my Dell Latitude D520 core2duo where one of the memory slots isn't working anymore. Just yesterday the Laptop would not startup but lights on the front panel came on, so I suspected a memory issue. The D520 has a slot underneath the keyboard for memory, as well as underneath the laptop. When ever I put memory in the slot under the keyboard, it won't startup. I tried various memory known to work. I even took the memory from underneath the laptop and placed it under the keyboard because it worked underneath. But once I placed the memory in the slots under the keyboard, it would not startup. I would just get three green lights next to the power key. One stayed, the other 2 blinked; they all eventually stopped entirely. Once I removed the memory, it would start up. I tried cleaning the memory slot with an air can. I've never encountered this before. For now, I just run with 2 gig memory stick underneath the laptop. It works fine. I am assuming a motherboard issue. Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

A:Dell Latitude D520 memory slot doesn't work

Sure sounds like the socket is bad, or the memory controller. You may have to live with a single DIMM in the bottom slot.

I purchased an Inspiron 11 3147 with what appears to have a non K-Slot security slot. However I have been unable to find out what kind of slot it is. Along with the laptop I bought a Kensington security cable (Dell part number A5883764). The bar on the cable is too wide to fit into the slot on the notebook. The cable fits fine into my other devices with a k-slot. The only explanation I can come up with is that Dell just didn't make the slot big enough, which I also find hard to believe.
I opened a case with Dell, but the support tech was not able to find a compatible security cable and advised that I contact Kensington.
Attached is a picture showing the slot and cable.
Has anyone else had similar problems?

A:Inspiron 11 3000 series Security Slot

I recently received my Dell Inspiron 13 7000 and I had the same problem with my Kensington combination lock.
Researching information in the web, it looks like Dell changed the security slot to a shorter one (Noble security Wedge) for some Tablets, Ultrabooks (including Dell XPS 12) and Inspiron 14 (7437) - 7000. There is not information for Dell Inspiron 11 3000 or 13 7000 series but as I can see in some pictures the size of the slot is the same that the Inspiron 14 7000.
The new slot is using Noble security Wedge (Manufacturer Part# : TZ08 | Dell Part# : A6451164) and the link to buy it in Dell store this special security cable is:
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A6451164
I will buy this cable hoping it fits my Dell 13 7000.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on an Acer Aspire 5741Z-5539 laptop.

The other night I got an odd crash while trying to watch a YouTube video in fullscreen, where the video stuttered, the computer went to black and didn't immediately come back. I turned it off and back on and it went on fine. Last night I tried to watch the video again as I went to bed and it was fine until I plugged in the VGA cable to my desktop monitor and that blinked into a BSoD reading something along the lines of "A device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught."

This morning I looked it up and found some sort of boot-time driver scanner that Windows has and went to run that. When I restarted my computer it started booting up and after a couple screens (not booted into Windows yet), it BSoD'd. Restarted, same thing. And again. Finally startup repair ran and it booted again, only now it had a message in the lower right telling me my copy of Windows wasn't legitimate even though it was installed on here by Acer themselves probably 4 or 5 years ago and never gave me this message before in that time. I restarted and the message didn't come up again, so I ran a boot-time scan with Avast to make sure everything was alright. Found one malware in Java and put it in the chest. Windows started up but now I noticed my SD card slot was no longer appearing under Computer. I'm not positive if it was gone on that startup or if it was gone earlier and I hadn't noticed. Restart... Hey, I'm a longtime fan of this site, finally asking a question myself.
I bought this computer from a friend, and initallly everything wasorking fine. I installed all of the recommended updates to my Dell Studio XPS 9100, including a bios update, and at some point after the bios update, my ram showed as 2 gig when 6 gigs are installed physically. I tried reorder the ram, and the result was the same in a combos/positions: the ram appears functional but only one chip seems to be in use by the bios/system. I would like to upgrade this computer with more ram, but need to solve this problem with the current ram before I spend anymore on this computer. I note that I'm fairly sure all the DDR3 chips are working individually, and also that I wasn't able to downgrade to the original bios version, the installer from dell won't let you downgrade your bios.
Please help me allow my system to use it's full installed amount of ram, seriously, @ 2G/RAM the machine is awfully slow.

Just for clarification, all 6GB was properly identified before, right? And is it 64-bit Windows?

How is your 6GB configured? Is that 3 x 2GB or, 1 x 2GB + 1 x 4GB? If 3 x 2GB, does it work with just 2 sticks installed? If 2 + 4GB, does it work with just the 4GB installed?

You need to be totally sure. I recommend MemTest86. Allow the diagnostics to run for several passes or even overnight. You should have no reported errors. If MemTest86 does not see the full amount, you need to test each stick separately.

And did you buy more RAM or did you buy if from your friend with 6GB already installed? If you bought some, how did you ensure it was the right and compatible RAM?

Hi all,
I have DELL INSPIRON 3250 desktop supported by DDR3L RAM. Is it possible for me to replace DDR3L with DDR4 RAM (Intel 6th Gen I5-6400) and chipset is H110.
Existing RAM : DDR3L 1600Mhz (UDIMM slots)
I tried CRUCIAL website. They only mention DDR3L RAM. Some internet websites mention that SKYLAKE motherboard support both DDR3L(1.35v) & DDR4(1.2v). I assume my motherboard chipset fall under SKYLAKE category.
I don't want to feel disappointed after investing in DDR4 RAM. That's why I want to clarify before buying. If DDR4 shall be supported, what speed I should choose. Also only if DDR3L RAM supported, can I try going beyond 1600 mhz

In the last week or so, I have to reboot my pc almost every day because the RAM usage gets up to 93% and I can't do anything, even launch taskmanager. When I've caught it before it was too full, I saw that almost nothing was listed as using RAM (system was at like 80MB). Essentially, RAM is "in use", but the use is not explained by taskmgr or perfmon.

I'm prepared to learn that it's a BIOS or mem controller issue, but it never happened in several years of XP and Vista on the same rig. Also I see I'm not the only one with the same issue on Win 7 64bit:

Somebody tried to shut him down, but I have a feeling his complaint is as legit as mine. There's no excuse for Windows using all of the memory if it can't flush when you need it.

Ideas?

Blaming windows would be the first reaction, but is it warranted? I have no such problem, with 64 bit. Maybe, you have a virus, or maybe all your memory is not recognized. There are a lot of areas to look into before we can assume that it is windows.
Many times the A/V is a memory glutton. Other times other things are going on in the system, indexing, or a virus scan. All things to think about.

So Dell made a really terrible decision.  They have a transparent strip in the power button for an LED light to indicate if the power is on.  A power indicator is a given in any laptop, no matter how cheap it is.  However, Dell in all of it's genius decided to not include an LED bulb on laptops up to the Inspiron 7000 Series, despite leaving a transparent slot for it.  Seriously, what happened to this brand?!?  Do children make these laptops now?
I want to fix this, as my laptop is no longer returnable and a power indicator is absolutely necessary.  So the only thing I can think of is replacing it with one from the 7000 Series somehow (with some help probably).
This is a Dell Inspiron 5559.  I also have an Inspiron 5547.  Not sure which exact 7000 model I should get the part for...
Are they compatible?
Is there an easier way? Like how Fn+H turns on the hard drive indicator?
Thanks.

A:Can I replace a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series power board with a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series power board?

The systems use different case and mainboard designs -- and may even be made by different companies.  The answer in all likelihood is no.
I don't think Apple has produced a Macbook with a power indicator -- the PC vendors are playing follow Apple.

Normally I purchase the dell series 9, as dell brand but they were sold out at most places. So I purchased black and color ink from officemax for my dell printer which said it was for series 9 and the type of printer I own. It's the right series and numbers. I placed the ink in the printer like I normally do and my printer tells me there is no ink. I've read online elsewhere that the chip on the cartridge doesn't match the printer. If that's so then officemax shouldn't be allowed to sell dell replacement cartridge. But is there anyway I can fix this?

A:Dell Photo 926 Printer / OfficeMax Dell series 9 replacement

If it still prints just ignore it, if not then check to se if the metal is the same on the back of the cartridge and in the printer, if it is then you have a faulty cartridge, if not then the cartridge is incompatible.

I want to install a SSD 128 for system and WW7 Pro - but 32-bit? 64-bit? (The case has a Vista Business sticker with key but no discs. And SATA II or III drives OK?

Will appreciate your comments

A:filling a totally empty DELL T3400

You should be able to see the name of the motherboard on the motherboard, look it up so you can see if it's sata ii and iii compatible, but both sata will work with eachother really.

As for the version of windows it doesn't matter, the motherboard might have an activation hash, but nothing a clean install can't take care of.

Did you delete them all or not yet? To see what is crashing perhaps you could zip and upload one either now or when it happens again. The other information generated from the SF Diagnostic tool here Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions would be useful but if there are thousands of dump files then delete some of the old ones before trying to upload.

As in yesterday when I was downloading a PPV worth 8 GB from the WWE Network through letmeatit, the Ram usage started to fill up and reached 70%, I then downloaded wise memory optimiser in fear and to my surprise after optimising the usage dropped to 56% and the downloading was on without interruption.. So whenever the ram usage increased in 2 hours or so, I ran the optimiser and why wouldn't I as without the optimiser my download wouldnt have even completed and the computer would have froze..and I noticed the KERNEL NON PAGED MEMORY WAS in 1000's in about 13+ hours.. Windows XP SP3 laptop. Yesterday afternoon I woke my laptop up from Sleep Mode and noticed that there were dozens of weird icons filling in between my regular desktop icons. They are little boxes with strange characters underneath were the description usually appears. Some look like a foreign language, but it's mostly boxes. I immediately thought that I had gotten a virus, which is very rare since I keep my computer clean and updated. I updated Malwarebytes and then went into Safe Mode and ran it.... nothing. Ran Avast... still nothing. Did some research and couldn't find anything that described what I had. Deleted the IconCache.db which is supposed to fix corrupted icons... still they came back!!! Changed the size of the icons as someone suggested but that didn't work. Also checked the language settings. Ran an online virus scanner... nothing. Ran CCleaner. When I checked properties of the icons they are all zero bytes, so I deleted them all and emptied the Recycle Bin. When I rebooted the computer they all came back!!!! I'm beating my head against the wall trying to fix the problem. Has anyone seen this before?? Unfortunately I had turned off System Restore recently and forgot to turn it back on, so that's not an option. Any suggestions are welcome. Help!!

About a week and 1/2 ago I loaded some new drivers for my Gigbyte motherboard. To cut a long story short it successfully trashed my BIOS so that I no longer had keyboard or mouse control.
I brought a new MB ( ) and now I find that the XP desktop does not completely fill the monitor as previously. There is a black border around the desktop now of about 25mm (1") wide that was previously used by the desktop and other programs. Actually black border is greater on the RH edge and bottom than the LH edge and top.
The default resolution was 800x600 and I have increased it to 1152x864 but still the screen is not completely filled. Also the aspect ratio is slightly out, the text/images are slightly stretched vertically.
My video card (which was the orignal by the way i.e. I transferred it from the old MB) is a RADEON 9200 LE adaptor and the chip set is RADEON 9200 AGP.
I am using XP with SP2.
Any advice greatly accepted.

Hi. I'm having a problem with my computer and I was wondering if anyone can help me.

Recently my computer has been having this recurring problem. It will be working fine one minute, then suddenly slow down and struggle the next. According to task manager something is eating up the page file during these times. It goes up from 0.2 to 1.10 gigs in no time, almost a straight vertical line, then after a while back down to 0.2 again just as abruptly. These intervals of high usage don't coincide with anything I'm actually doing - they seem to occur arbitrarily, even when I'm not running anything at all. In fact nothing listed under Processes appears to come close to even a fraction of this pagefile usage - the biggest one was 20 mb, and added together the processes wouldn't have cracked 50 megs of memory (I know memory is different from virtual memory or the pagefile, though, so this could be irrelevant).

http://www.phlegthon.com/test/pagefileproblem.gif

Above is a screengrab of this occurence. It isn't entirely accurate to the normal problem because windows increased my page file during a virus scan due to low memory, but should give the general idea. Most of the minor fluctuations can be explained with the programs I was opening/closing at the time. For example, I was running a virus scan early on, and later, then opened outlook, and so on. The image is a little big but I thought I'd leave the CPU stuff in just in case its somehow relevant (t... Read more

When inserting memory module on the memory slot it was not aligned properly. When i turn on the power i noticed smoke and i immediatly turned off the power. Removed memory module and half of it was burnt, now my question is the memory slot damaged? Because its slightly burned in the inside slot, could i install a new memory module in that particular slot? or do i have to change the memory slot thats on the mother board?

A:Memory Slot

You are probably lucky if you didn't kill the whole board. The slot is most likely toast. If you were brave enough to try another stick in the same slot, it may not work, or it may burn-up something else. I don't think changing the slot is really an option. Motherboards are not exactly repairable items.

My motherboard just went out on my pc and I was wondering if there is something that I can hook up to my laptop that will let me read whats on my pc memory, kind of a external memory slot or something. I've been searching google for a few hours and I can't find anything and I know you guys always know what your talking about and answer very quickly. Any help would be appreciated.

A:External Pc Memory Slot

Your actual data is not stored in the memory, its stored on the hard drive. And it's very easy to connect a hard drive to any other PC, there are many adapters for this.

Here's a version that simply connects a drive, either SATA or PATA(IDE) to a USB port without any enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

Here's a version that basically converts the drive into an external drive that you can safely use that way: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817388017
This one only supports SATA hard drive with a connector like this: http://www.google.ca/imgres?hl=en&s...dsp=35&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:28,i:160&tx=102&ty=76

More enclosures to choose from: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=92&name=External-Enclosures

I was told by Lenovo that one slot will accomodate 1 gig of memory, instead of using 2 half gig sticks. I was also told about something called "memory boost" as an external memory source to increase memory. has anyone heard of this? I want to run PhotoshopCS and need 1 GIG of memory and don't want to get new motherboard(the machine is long out of warantee). can anyone help on this issue?
thanks, JeffB

A:Bad Memory Slot in IBM T30 Laptop

"readyboost" is a feature only available for Vista, where it can use a USB memory stick as an alternative to paging back to the hard drive, it's not really in place of RAM.

I have an IBM T30 laptop which has 2 slots for memory. Which is the primary? I am adding a 512 mb memory module and I want to know which slot should contain the 512 and which
one the remaining 256. BTW, even though I have a 256 in each slot most of the time it only
recognizes a single 256 module. Thanks for your info.

Hi,

I have a dell dimension 9200 and the motherboard can handle a maximum of 4gb of ram, but is there a limit per slot?

In other words does it have to be 4 x 1gb sticks of ram or can I use 2 x 2gb sticks?

The reason I ask is that I've had lots of bsod and crashes recently and after performing lots of tests using memtest it seems that 2 of the ram slots on my motherboard are bad meaning I only have 2 good ones to use.

This is a hardware question for anyone that can help me out. I have tried to upgrade the ram in a dell dimension 5150, after seating the additional ram one of the existing slots containing ram started smoking with an obvious plastic burning smell. I have removed all ram and the burning is still occurring when powering on accompanied by a loud beeping noise. It's clear that one of the slots is melting. Need to know what my options are now. New board, or can this be rectified. Obviously the slot is now damaged and can't be used but there are three remaining. Never experienced this and unsure what has caused it to happen ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Tecra 8100 Laptop running Windows XP Professional. The latptop has two slots (A & B) in which you can add 128MB of memory each.

When starting up the PC with both modules installed, I get the error message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

system32\drivers\pci.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select R at the first screen to repair."

I have done as indicated and done a full repair on Windows XP but still get same message.

I then went to Microsoft.com to search the knowledge base. According to Microsoft, the above message indicates

"This issue may occur if your computer contains a hardware component that is either damaged or is incompatible with Windows XP."

I followed their instructions and it turns out that if I put just 128 MB in memory Slot A, the computer starts up fine. If I add it in 128MB in slot B, I get the above problem. At first I thought it was a bad memory module, but if I switch them, they will both start up the computer in Slot A when used by themselves. So it appears to me that Slot B is the problem somehow.

Any thoughts or assistance greatly appreciated.

I have been building computers for years and never found a reason for the placement of the memory slots on a motherboard. If you look at a board that uses an Intel CPU, the slots used are1-3 and/or 2-4. If you look at a board that uses an AMD CPU however, the slots used are 1-2 and/or 3-4. Does anybody know why this is? No, I'm not trying to make a better motherboard, I'm just curious enough to finally ask.

Thanks for any info anyone can give.

A:Memory slot placement

'If you look at a board that uses an AMD CPU however, the slots used are 1-2 and/or 3-4.'

refer to the MSI K9N - which see;

http://www.bosamar.com/K9N/review.html

Dual channel with slots 1/3 or 2/4.

Assuming that you installed 2 Gb in 4 modules of dual channel ram and it is used from byte 0 to 2047 linearly, then assuming that the average 2 Gb ram install running XP uses about 50% of the Ram running avg8 (as example), you would get heating in ram modules 1 and 3 and none to speak of in 2 and 4.

Thus, heat separated components and better cooling.

My opinion.

I just purchased my computer yesterday. I removed my Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo from my digital camera and was going to download them to my computer. The slot came with a Dell piece. My memory stick is too small. It did not come with an adapter and I have no idea how to get it installed. Any ideas???

A:need help with memory stick slot

It is likely that the two aren't compatible.

What model Dell do you have? The type of adapter that you need depends on what slots your Dell has.

Also - most cameras come with a USB cable. Could you use that instead?

So recently my colleague tried to upgrade the RAM in his laptop, but he ended up messing up really bad he actually broke the only memory slot on the motherboard (yikes!). He asked me to take a look at it for him, and I was pretty surprised how badly he had messed it up (as in there's no way it could be fixed). I told him he might have to replace the entire motherboard, but he really can't afford that right now. I let him know that might be his only option, but I decided to ask here before giving up. The rest of the motherboard is fine; only the memory slot is broken. So is it possible to replace just the memory slot without replacing the entire motherboard? And if so, can anyone help me out with doing this? He does really need his laptop, so any help would be awesome.

A:Broken memory slot

How long can he go without a laptop?
That is a big project. You will need to be a master with a solder gun. Just getting the old part off without melting the motherboard will be an adventure. There are a LOT of pins.

First you will need to find the Brand and model # of the motherboard. You can use CPU-Z for that - it will list the info on the third tab.

Then, armed with that info you will search for the RAM SOCKET replacement. This is where it will get interesting, as the available sources will be in Asia. Shipping will kill you (for a $3 part). And you will probably need some translation skills too.

Your colleague really couldn't afford to mess his RAM Socket up. Now his best bet is to buy a new laptop.

actually, i was used to a pc with 160mb-ram - which is 32 + 128. now i own a faster one with one single 512mb-slot. but unfortunately, some problems occur: gta3 is collapsing all the time, i cannot copy a normal 1024x768 .tga-image to clipboard via corel (»low memory«) and after watching some freshly downloaded quake3-bots i got the message »low memory«, too. sometimes, even some multitasking surfing can bring me up to fully busy memory - is this a technical problem or am i asking for too much power!? i heard something like this memory-damage would lead to the problems i have.
speaking against it is a rather stable quake3 while in game and a fascinating stable 1nsane played also in 1280x1024 - without any stinky problem.

Took that stick, put it in another slot on mobo. Passed. Took the other stick put in in that next slot, got the restarts again. Could it be that the memory slot that went bad on the mobo also caused the memory stick to go down with it?

How can I upgrade my laptop memory? There isn't a memory slot at the bottom of the laptop.

A:I can't find the memory slot to Satellite S70-B-10V

Memory slots on this notebook model are placed under the bottom cover so when RAM modules must be exchanged or upgraded bottom cover must be removed.
Please note: on some notebook models RAM upgrade is supported by notebook owners and RAM upgrade steps are described in user?s manuals document.

I your case such upgrade is not supported and RAM upgrade should be done by authorized service provider.
Generally speaking bottom cover removal is not complicated but you should not do it alone. This will cancel valid warranty.

In my opinion, before you do anything contact nearest Toshiba service provider in your country and ask for help. Simply pick up some info about price and compatible RAM modules.

Alrighty, I'm running an MSI K8N Neo4. I've had it for a while, so far I've just been running a 512 stick in the first, green slot. Someone got me two sticks of 512 to fill out my system, I installed them but only recognized 1g of ram. I checked the manufacturer's site to find
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=k8n_neo4_platinum
a nice diagram about dual and single channel memory that makes no sense to me. I believe all the sticks are dual channel, they have memory modules on both sides of the ram (if that is how you tell, I'm not sure). All three sticks are kingston value ram, they are pc3200, all three work (as I discovered after some musical chairs with memory). I'm currently running the two new sticks, recognizing 1g of memory, while I have my original stick in a box.

Can anyone help me out with the diagram or point me in the direction of something more helpful? The manufacturer's website has an online tech support page that is under construction. I just downloaded the manual but I was hoping for some easy insight.
Anything would be greatly appreciated at this point.

The additional slot referenced is in the E-dock expansion adapter - NOT the system.  The system takes only one internal M.2 drive.

I'm sorry this is so long, but please take the time to read it all because I have already taken a LOT of steps to solve this myself.

I am an IT Professional, and have been since the 80s. The computer I'm having the problem with is mine, it has always had up-to-date AV, and has Automatic Updates on. I check it every so often with SpyBotS&d or MalwareBytes, and it has NEVER had anything besides tracking cookies. It has been on a secured wireless network (out in the middle of nowhere, doubt anyone would hack it), with both a hardware firewall at the DSL entry point and Windows Firewall on. It has never had a Memory Stick in its slot before now. The only removable media I've ever used with it is a big USB disk for backups, which unfortunately has not been done in about 6 months. I've never had Limewire or any other risky stuff installed on this computer. I don't use FaceBook, or any of the social networking, I don't surf any type of risky sites, and I don't download anything onto this computer. Its the safest computer on the planet.

The computer is a Sony Vaio K-series laptop, probably 4-5 years old, running XP Home SP3 and IE8. Here's the sequence of events as best I recall them.

A:Vaio locks up unless Memory Stick is in slot

Hello SunBoss

I am happy to report that I have solved the identical problem you describe involving system hang on the Windows XP splash screen and the yellow memory stick light turning on at that point. Similar to your experience I could boot in safe mode but no way to get into a normal boot. As this was a client machine on a limited budget I could not waste a lot of time and contacted the client and got authorization to do a full system restore figuring it would eliminate any software issues (conclusion based on ability to boot in safe mode it seemed reasonable?). Much to my surprise after a full factory restore from the OEM restore DVD the symptom was still there, in fact the restore could not complete because it required a full normal boot to finish the restore. So now I was really perplexed, no way it was software (given that the drive had been fully erased and reformatted), so that only leaves hardware and the memory stick module seemed the likely culprit and on a hunch I tore the bloody thing apart (keyboard, rear hinge cover, and all screws from bottom of the case) which allowed be just enough clearance to get inside and remove the ribbon cable from the memory stick module and presto the problem is resolved and unit now boots normally and I am in the process of bringing the system back up to current standards with all the updates, etc, and have already done multiple reboots with no problems. So I suspect you will find similar results once you go through the difficult ... Read more

I am using a HP Z400 Workstation Xeon Quad-Core W3565 3.2GHz, 12GB (3x4GB), 1TB, DVDRW, Windows 7 Pro.This the the model with 6 memory slots, so there was a possiblity for 24GB of RAM.  When I populate the remaining slots 4, 5 & 6 with 4GB DIMM, I get errors on boot up for the newly populated slots.  I am unable to configure for 24GB.I did discovered that the DDR3's that I am using are non-ECC.  The system has been running fine with the (3x4GB) setup.  Is the non-ECC preventing the 24GB configuration from working? Thanks for any help you can offer.

A:z400 - 6 slot memory configut=ration

Yes it is. It is not possible to install standard PC and server memory, I've never seen a system of any brand which supports such a configuration. Officially, the Z400 supports only ECC unbuffered memory modules. However, it will also run with standard DDR3 RAMs, unsupported only means that HP Customer Service won't help you. There are some reports that even 8 GB Modules work, but that's another story, 24 GB runs fine. Mixing different types of memory is generally a bad idea.Use either ECC unbuffered (which is recommended) or non-ECC, preferably six identical modules.DDR3 are relatively cheap, even those with error checking and correction. Good luck

Hello, I have an A31p with two 512mb cards  (one in each slot) but it only shows 512mb total memory.I've tried swapping the cards between slots 0 and 1, and also tried removing the slot 1 card, and always end up with 512mb.I've run the PC doctor utility that comes on the laptop, but I haven't found much more info there.I assume this means there is a hardware problem with slot 1.  Any ideas of how to fix this?If there is no way to fix this, can I use a 1gb card in slot 0? Thanks in advance...

Welcome to the forum! One RAM slot going bad is a faily common problem on ThinkPads of that generation, the most affected one being T30, but I've seen it on A31/p, X30 and T23 as well...now, to the answers: a) You can install 1Gb DIMM in your A31p. Mine all have 2x1Gb and work great. b) You can also try putting additional pressure by applying a thin piece of paper between the DIMM and the slot itself, or putting a post-it or two between the cover and the slot. c) There are companies which do this type of motherboard repair, I  have heard good reviews about hammershead tech. Hope this helps.

Hi all,

I am having a strange problem with my PC. I have a year old motherboard (Leadtek Winfast K7nCR18D Pro) and a new Athlon XP 3000+ and new 2 x 1GB corsair value sticks.

My PC is randomly resetting itself even sitting at the bios screen, just as though the reset button had been pressed. I disconnected all the drives and it still happens. I have installed a new PSU, and it still happens.

This is the bit that confuses me.... I have three dimm slots, one black two blue (for dual channel). If I put either of the chips only in the black slot I get NO problems at all. If I put either of the chips only in either of the blue slots it randomly resets, this happens whether I have a single chip in one of the blue slots or both chips in both blue slots. Obviously when there is only one chip in one blue slot the bios does not show 'dual channel enabled'.

Is there any difference in the way a motherboard deals with the memory in the blue slots which could indicate a problem with the memory? or is it likely the motherboard is dying?

Thanks for your help....

A:PC Resets - weird memory slot issue

Assuming the RAM is correct for your PC go into BIOS and set DRAM or RAM or whatever your RAM is listed under to Auto, reboot and see if that helps. ALso, make sure that you have the RAM in the correct slots for DDR (probably the two blue as you stated).

Hi, I recently bought a notebook from HP, the HP 355 G2 with A8-6410 processor.Inside there was a 4GB DDR3L-1600 Kingston memory module shipped, and there are two slots available. I checked with CPU-Z and other tools, and it showed a DRAM Frequency of 800MHz. I added a 8GB DDR3L-1600 Cruical memory module to the second slot, and checked again with CPU-Z.The DRAM Frequency was just 665.3MHz, the memory size of 12GB was recognized correctly. I thought it must be because of two different modules, got for testing two other identical 4GB DDR3L-1600 Kingston memory modules, and DRAM Frequency was again just 665.3MHz. And, if only one slot is used, with any DDR3L-1600 I had available, DRAM Frequency was 800MHz. But whenever both slots are used, it dropped to 665.3MHz. What's wrong? Do I need some specific memory modules for this notebook, respectively CPU and memory controller? HP Support suggested just that, but I believe it's not because of this. Perhaps the memory controller is working that way that it drops down to 665.3MHz if both slots are used. But why should that be? With none of my previous notebooks or pc this happened, always the memory speed as specified. And Google says, that A8-6410 has a single-channel memory contoller for DDR3L-1866, which would be even faster, but instead it runs with 1333. I currently use Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, if this of matter. Cheers

Here's a VERY strange problem: Inspiron 660s w/ two 4G DDR3 DIMMs installed  was up and running when it suddenly turned off with flashing amber power light and two-beep code indicating memory problem. When power cycled, the same symptom occurred (flashing amber & two-beeps).
Troubleshooting showed DIMM1 slot was bad (Item 9 on p.15 of User's Manual). If either 4G DIMM card was installed in the DIMM2 slot (Item 11 on p.15) the system would boot OK.
Both slots populated: Flash/beep.
DIMM1 slot populated with either 4G DIMM: Flash/beep.
DIMM2 slot populated with either 4G DIMM: Boots OK.
After "fixing" the system by de-populating the DIMM1 slot, full Dell Diagnostics (online version) were run with all PASS results. Memtest86+ passed as well.
QUESTIONS:
How could a memory *SLOT* (not memory card) suddenly fail in the middle of operation? The system was up & running but nothing was being done on it at the time of failure. Did a part of the chipset fail?
Is there any way to fix this problem short of replacing the MoBo?
Thanks.

I guess so, have you ever tried to establish the communication with the motherboard maker yet? Many of them has it own support lines that can provides the RMA informations.

How? Did you actually force it to be seated in backward position? Look closely at the notch of RAM, they can only go one way, and you can feel the pressure of installing the ram if it goes in wrong way.

Hello,Got the Dell Inspiron 15-7559Standard with 100 gb 2,5 inch HDD.Inserted a Kingston 2.5 inch HDD, works fine. Now days later I also inserted a M.2. Sata SSD. Both Disks work. But when selectign legacy boot and first selecting the second HDD it does not boot up the 2nd HDD. It gives an error message saying boot.msgr is missing.Tried :- Legacy mode, Secure mode on and off- Turning back to Uefi mode with secure mode on and off- Legacy mode and all kidns or boot orders. When I press F12 at startup and go to boot selection and select 2nd HDD, there is no problem, it boots up my 2.5 inch ssd no problem. Now I installed windows also on my M.2. Sata SSD and this one boots up fine in legacy mode. No issues at all. But also now when setting 2nd HDD first it still boots up the m.2. And once again manually selecting the 2nd HDD at startup works fine.I would like to use the 2.5inch ssd as boot device and the M.2. sata as storage.I have my reasons for this lol. :) Can anybody supply me with some advice/help?Thanks in advance!

I have a Toshiba A135 S7404 running Windows Vista Home Basic, the max memory upgrade is 2X2GB which I purchased via newegg.com and installed. When I turned it on, black screen and no boot up. Basically it will only reconize one 2GB of memory, doesn't matter what slot as long as it is only one. I tested both memory chips both work in the computer and in either card slot, just not both chips in both card slots. What the heck?????? Even stumped the Geek Squad guy at Best Buy, he seemed to think it the mother board issue. It runs much better on the 2GB then it did with the 512MB, cha. Computer should be able to run both 2GB card in each slot and reconize about 3.25 to 3.65 of the memory, if it would run both cards at the same time. ** I did upgrade the BIOS from 1.6 to 1.9 as most of the blogs suggested-still won't recognize the 2nd 2GB card.

now my question is, HOW DID THIS WORK!, i looked in the slot and the pins are much to big/spaces to fit all the pins on the card. everyone know theres a size difference between sd and memorystick. how did it work, i didnt think there were duel sd and memory stick readers, all the usb ones if seen have seperate slots. this is bugging me, as it shouldnt, that and i have to get it in just the right place to get it to work, it doesnt seem to fit snug in the slot.
any idea on how the hell this is working thanks

THE ISSUE:
Hardware issue: A broken memory stick slot on the HP Pavilion 753n
DETAILED EXPLANATION:

(I don't know how this happened anyway), but the catch on the second slot tray is

broken, causing one side of the installed memory stick to hang loose, and not snap in, or fit securely,

resulting in Windows not registering or recognizing that there is, in fact, a 512 RAM memory stick actually in

the second slot.
CONSEQUENCE:
I now have only one good 512 RAM memory slot.
ACTIONS TAKEN SO FAR:
Purchased and installed 2nd 512 RAM memory stick in the problem slot.
PRODUCT SPECS:
Memory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)

RESULTS:
Problem still exists.

Crucial's online scanner, and the System Specs under My Computer still reads like below:

Memory: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200
Memory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 1GB
Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
Total Memory Slots: 2
Available Memory Slots: 1 512MB EMPTY
SUGGESTED ACIONS FROM TECH SITES:
A: Replace the mother board.

OR:

B. Replace the 512MB stick that's in the good slot with a 1GB stick.

THE PROBLEM WITH B:
According to Crucial's.com's Expert Online Tech (where I bought the 512 extra RAM) this pc (HP Pavilion 753n) is too old, and cannot handle a 1GB stick because it's basically an obsolete pc...the OS (operating system) will be severely affected, causing crashes and other instabiity if you put a 1GB stick of RAM in a 512 ... I am trying to buy some RAM for a Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop. On the crucial website it says that each slot shouldn't exceed 512 MB of RAM. It says there is only a maximum of 1 GB of RAM for this system. I wanted to get 1 GB of Crucial RAM for $32. The only issue is that the RAM comes in a 1GB Module. If I was to buy two 512 MB Modules the price wold be around $15-20 more expensive. Does it really matter if I put in a larger RAM module than what Crucial says the system should use. Any Thoughts would be appreciated.

If you bought that 1gb stick, your laptop would only recognize 512mb.

Hi
Just received my new e5470 with 4GB RAM, I wanted to upgrade to 16GB (2x8GB) which I have from my previous laptop. I found only one slot underneath, the usual place for the 2nd slot next to it does not have the slot set up and it is blank. I have also removed and checked under the keyboard but it was not there either.
The BOIS setup stated that I have two slots, one is 8GB which is I know I have (I changed the 4GB which came originally with one of the two 8GB that I have) and the other is "not slotted" which I am unable to locate.
Does anyone know where is the other slot located?
Thank you

PLEASE HELP ME OUT.... BECAUSE DELL WONT RELEASE THIS INFORMATION TO ME B/C THEY DON'T SUPPORT THIRD PARTY UPGRADES!!!!!

A:NEED HELP!! Dell Dimension 3000 3.00GHz 1GB ram ~Where do I find the CPU slot?~

I had the exact PC a few years ago so I think that I can help. Your PC is a normal ATX type computer. Any atx mobo will fit in there. Do you live near a warehouse type store like "Fry's Electronics"? They specialize in PC parts and have excellent deals on mobo/cpu bundles. I upgraded to a socket 775 board with a dual core Pent D 945 Presler cpu. The board takes the pc-3200 400 mhz ram or the pc-4200 533mhz ram (DDR2). So you can use your current ram for now. I suggest DDR2 when you can. (2GHZ). The pci-express slot is there, as are SATA inputs if you upgrade your hardisk sometime. Good Luck.

I recently upgraded my processor & motherboard from...

AMD Phenom II X2 550
Asus M4N68T-M

Now it's AMD FX-4300 & Asus M5A78L-M LX3. I ran two modules of RAM (4GB + 2GB) on that previous motherboard. These are my modules...

1. Corsair CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9 Vengeance 4GB Single Module DDR3 Memory
2. Kingston Value RAM 2GB (don't know the exact model but it was a 1333Mhz module)

Both modules have the same latency. I just had to downclock the corsair module to 1333Mhz & then they both ran in dual channel mode.
Now on this new motherboard, when I check sys info in BIOS, it shows just 4GB RAM (or 2GB; basically it just detects what's in the first slot). When I boot into Windows, it says that 2GB (or 4GB; the other slot) is always hardware reserved.
Also task manager shows wrong RAM speed. Instead of 1333Mhz, it shows 1600Mhz. And when I really run it at 1600Mhz or even below 1333Mhz, it's always wrong in task manager.
There's another interesting thing happening when I try to change the memory speed in BIOS. When I change it & as soon as I hit enter (after F10), system just powers down for a few seconds & boots right up. This is just my second motherboard & idk if it's normal but it sure doesn't feel right

I'm posting this after going through a lot of posts on similar topics & the solutions are not working for me. I even checked for bent pins on my CPU but it looks good. As it looks, either the RAM modules are inco... Read more

So in February I ordered my kid an inspiron 11 as first computer. Later I decided to upgrade the memory and I called Dell and provided my service Tag. Dell told me it had a 2GB memory card and I could upgrade to a 4GB card. I ordered the card and disassembled my computer to find there is no slot to upgrade. After an hour on the phone I find out that what I am looking at is one with a fixed memory module. I told them that per my service tag it is supposed to have a slot and be upgradeable. They told me there is nothing they can do.
So I say how bout you exchange this for one that has what I ordered. They say since its over the 30 days there is no way to return or exchange. I said even though its your fault ???
Am I being unreasonable ? All I want is what I ordered. After a few more calls to India One person finally tells me there is a first and second generation of this laptop. Ist gen has the fixed and the second has the replaceable. So I tell them that per  Dell tag  this is supposed to be 2nd generation and therefor it was built wrong. They again say " we have a 30 day no Hassel return " and your over that.
Any suggestions folks ? I'm sick of beating my head against the wall with these people

I was wondering as I've got 2 spare slot Mini PCI-Express free on my laptop, if such Intel Card (ITM) could fit inside...This technology is quite not expensive actually.

The mini PCI-E is very ease to access under my keyboard and it just have to be inserted, and at system reboot, Windows7 will recognize straight that card and the proper Intel Turbo drivers.

It does act like "Windows ReadyBoost" & "Windows ReadyDrive" under 7 and Vista...so the system will load faster....boost the disk cache, load faster Apps & perform battery improvement.

Work on "Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset familly" & "Mobile Intel 4 Express Chip Familly".

Im also a college student so I guess basic ease and stuff is good. Which choice is better, dell or asus?
The pros and cons of both?
Thanx

I have Dell 1100 laptop that is running Windows Xp Home.

I use a D-Link G650 card to connect to the Internet. Everything was fine until yesterday.

It appears that my card is not responding--the lights on it don't come on when the PC boots up and even when the boot process is done.

My system tray shows the remark "D-link card not found" and I have no connectivity. I rebotted the machine with the same problem. I haven't reset the D-Link 624 router that I use to connect.

I tried another card in the laptop and I got the same results--no lights on the PC card and no connectivity.

Please advise. I hope it's not the actual PC slot on the laptop sice I don't have a clue about how to repair/replace it??? Is it part of the mobo on the Dell 1100??

Anybody have an idea or clue..
Please advise.
Thanks. Tony

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop and PC Card Slot Problem?

d-link isn't exactly bad, but thier products aren;t that good either. my first suspect would be the card itself. can you swap it with a known good model or return it?

Hi all -- I've been browsing and this seems to be a place to get some expert help. I have 4-5 dump files (sorry, they are not mini, and about 285k in size)

BSOD errors range from 1e to "a"

Fair warning -- Lenovo has replaced the RAM (and is now passing memtest), and the harddrive, and I suspect the mobo is now tossing out errors.

May I post the actual dump files? Could it be one of the drivers for the integrated devices (sound, network) is killing me?

Or possibly the Nvidia 9800gt card that I installed after buying the PC? I feel like my only hope is to dive into these dump files.

Any and all help is completely appreciated!

If they are not minidumps, then you'll have to post them to a free file hosting site and then leave a link to them in your next post.

Lately, whenever i turn on my computer a message pops up with all the computer info, 2 beeps, and a message stating,
"Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility..."

Option 1: click F1 key, a second message pops up saying :
"A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

If you proceed and do the control alt delete combo, the computer restarts and this happens again {-_-}...

Option 2: "Strike" the F2 key only to be brought to a screen with options like this:...

Drive Configuation..................................................... <ENTER>
Hard-Disk Drive Sequence........................................... <ENTER>
(Good examples i know)

And these continue down the screen and some geeks will know this to be the "Setup Utility"

-

Considering that this is my best option other than doing something to the actual Hardrive i need some help/assitance with this problem because im no geek at ALL.

Hi, can anyone help, please! I have crashed my friends computer, it had a few issues with it and she asked me to take a look at it, I deleted 2 programs and it crashed. When it is turned on you hit f8 and it brings up the normal options but wont let me use them, it just reboots again.
If I just start the computer a screen comes up that says \windows\system32\config\system select r at the first screen to repair. I have tried pressing r and nothing happens. I tried to insert the disc to reinstall windows but all it says is diskette drive failure.

Has anyone got any ideas, my friend cant afford to take it to be repaired and I feel guilty! Any help would be appreciated.
