Symantec Update configuration, I think...

Q: Symantec Update configuration, I think...

I first had a dial up modem. I got frustrated with that, so I got DSL. I got a virus, so I purchased Norton Internet Security package with firewall, etc. via download. When I attempted to use the Live Update feature, I got this message:

Initializing...
Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com...
Unable to connect to host
LiveUpdate could not connect to your Internet Service Provider. Verify
your dial-up information is correct.
LiveUpdate session is complete.

I then deleted the dial-up configuration thinking that it would then recognize the DSL connection. Not so! I'm getting the same message. Any suggestions as to how I can get the Live Update feature to work for me? (Windows XP)

Hi PJ Staley,

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Run Hijack this.
Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This Do Not download it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

I am using Symantec Endpoint Protection version 11.0.4000.2295 on a Vista Dell Latitude D830. I am unable to access my VPN for work. If I disable Symantec, I can access the VPN with no issues. So there must be a configuration in Symantec that needs changed. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I recently upgraded NIS 2004 to 2005 and no matter how I configure the Internet access for the program "Microsoft Printer Spooler Service," NIS 2005 randomly notifies me, via the pop-up in the lower right corner of the display, that "Rules are automatically configured for the program: Microsoft Printer Spooler Service." In addition, this pop-up notification continues to pop up and down for at least a half a dozen times before it goes away. No error messages are involved, and no other program is affected.

It would appear to me that NIS 2005 does not recognize when the Microsoft Printer Spooler Program has firewall Internet access rules established. Thus, since it is a "safe" program, NIS 2005, automatically sets the rules, notifies me, does not recognize that the rules are set, so it sets them again, and the cycle is continued, over and over again until the Spooler program stops asking for Internet access. I guess that the apparent random nature of the occurrence of this cycle is correlated to the Spooler program requesting Internet access.

I have been communicating with Symantec India, but it is like wading through a lake of alligators in order to get at that kernel of truth. Any ideas? I'll even consider the elimination of the notification function provided it does not affect the error & risk notification functions.

Am running Norton 2003 and it is good until 5/05. On Liveupdate, I get an update "Symantec Common Client Update", 470.0 kb in size. This will not install and refers to error code: LU1812. All other updates install. Is this update only for Norton 2004? This is what I read on the Norton site. Just want to confirm. Thanks, Gary

I'm running NAV 2003 but I haven't been offered a Common Client Update for a long time. LU1812 brings this article up from the Knowledgebase;

Hi everyone,

I'm having a bit of trouble with my desktop (this post via my laptop).

On my desktop I'm running winXP pro. I also installed norton symantec ghost, utilities, anti-virus and firewall. No problem so far.

After having installed al of those my computer still runs fine. Then I decided to run a live-update on my symantec products. Some of those required a reboot. After reboot I get a frozen xp. It is passed my login-screen and before showing my icons on the right hand side of my taskbar. (the ones that are with the clock).

Does anyone know of a fix? I do want to use these programs so please don't tell me not to use them.

Thanx in advance,
Jacco

More information would be helpful. what type of system are you running? What version of Norton system works are you installing? did you buy winXP and Norton’s? or are they downloaded from the web?

I know a couple of people who were trying to use a bad version and it caused similar lockups after updating.

Try going into safe mode ( f8 at beginning of reboot) try using safe mode or last know good configuration to uninstall all the Symantec products.

Make sure to delete and residual directories and files left behind and then reinstall. you might get lucky.. could just have been random flipped bits

Hi All,

This problem has been nagging at me for some time. I have a couple of machines that the live update button is greyed out on.

SAV version 10.0.1.1000.

How do I set the live update button to allow live updates?

I saw some almost relevant links on the Symantec website and that's why I posted. One of the symantecc.com pages I read mentioned that live update provide slightly more security if it is set up than if you have it greyed out. I'm obviously paraphrasing. I don't remember the exact wording, but that was the gist of it.

According to Symantec, uninstalling existing versions of Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition on your PC is generally not required prior to the installation of Symantec AntiVirus 10 (SAV), provided that the NAVCE client is not damaged. NAVCE/SAV can become disabled or damaged in a number of ways by viruses, worms, and hacked compromises. Symptoms that your version of NAVCE/SAV is damaged include:

the client is not getting virus definition updates
the client cannot run a scan for viruses
the icon (a gold shield) located at the bottom right of the screen has an exclamation point on it or a red circle around it
If you have these symptoms, or if you have problems installing our managed client, uninstall previous versions and any other anti-virus software installed on your PC (for example. PC-Cillin, McAffee, Norton AntiVirus 2002 or any other Norton commercial version) and in the case of Symantec products, the corresponding versions of LiveUpdate. (To remove software, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.) Then restart your computer before installing the newest version. Hi,I have a unique situation: I work freelance but one computer is dedicated to one a company in another state. However, they have provided SEP b/c I connect via VPN to their server for file and software/license access. I assume that it will just end one day if/when they "pull the plug" so to speak. Due to the commotion down there I cannot get thru to any tech folks so here I am.I have never given SEP much thought (it scans, does live update, etc. just fine) until now. Unlike other AV products there is not the usual update option from an "about" menu, but since I am preparing for other changes I went to Sym' site and was prompted to download AutoDetectPkg.exe. I have Symantec Corporate Edition 10.

I installed the Symantec System Center and Symantec AntiVirus Software and then deployed the Antivirus Server.

I also installed the latest LiveUpdate Admin utility, configured the Central Live Update Sever, and configured the clients.

The clients and server are running Xp SP2 and I have disabled the firewall on both ends.

The clients are in a workgroup as is the Central Live Update Sever for testing
Late, we will move to a domain.

The plan is to use the a LAN.

I connected to the Symantec site and downloaded the virus definitions and updates to a shared folder on the Central Live Update Sever.

I then used the LiveUpdate Admin utility to create host file for the clients to get the updates. I copied the host file, Liveupdt.hst, to a client and placed the file in LiveUpdate folder.

If I open the Symantec AntiVirus on the client and click on the LiveUpdate button,
I get the following:

Unable to connect to host
LU1814: Live Update could not retrieve the catalog file.

Any idea why the client can not get the updates from my Central Live Update server?

Thanks

Hi, hoping I can get a little help; my attempts to get my computer into sleep mode have instead led to some, er, 'interesting' coincidences.

About a week ago, I noticed by chance that my (desktop) computer wasn't going to sleep mode like I had set it to after an hour. This intrigued me; I thought/think it may be a driver update that was interfering with the sleep mode timing. Two nights ago, I finally got around to trying to track the issue down, and eventually decided to try a system restore to the last time I'd remembered sleep mode working; August 31st. Of course, my first order of business after the system restore was completed was to reupdate my AV and urgent windows updates, which is when the more alarming behaviors began.

Once all of the updates had completed, I quickly noticed that Symantec taskbar icon had a crossout logo; auto-protect was disabled. In response, I try to re-enable it, only to see it disable itself again within the second. This is bizarre. My first instinct is to reboot into safe mode, recheck for updates, and run a scan. When I select safe mode, however, the computer doesn't even give me enough time on the login screen to type my password before it restarts AGAIN, this time ignoring my desperate repeated punching of 'F8.' A half hour later, and my brilliant idea to perhaps bypass this by changing the boot settings to safe-boot by default results in an endless-loop boot. In the end, I manage to get into an emergency mode that allows me ... Read more

I am unsure if I have a virus, but I've been unable to update Symantec Endpoint Enterprise.  Unfortunately, I don't know how long this problem has been going on, since I've been out of town, and returned to find two of my family computers seem to be having problems.

On this computer, Symantec Endpoint Enterprise has not been updated since July.  I tried uninstalling it, and reinstalling the program, but am still unable to update.  I haven't noticed any other problems with this computer, but my wife's computer seems to be having all kinds of problems (more to follow on that one later), so I'm concerned.

On September 18, 2014, Symantec released Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 Release Update 5 (12.1.5). You can download this version from Symantec FileConnect.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.5 includes a number of new features, including:

Bandwidth throttling to control client/server communication traffic
Content storage optimization that greatly reduces disk space used by Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager. It's applicable only for SEPM not for clients.
Symantec Endpoint Protection for Linux, which allows Linux clients to be managed through the Endpoint Protection Manager
For more information about this release, read the Release Notes or the updated product documentation in the Related Articles section.

Refer this blog: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/symantec-has-released-new-...

English versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.5337.5000 (RU5) is now available to download on FileConnect. Other languages versions will be available soon. We shall update you on its availability.

The primary download is distributed into two installation files: Part1_Installation and Part 2_Tools. Please download and extract both files before continuing with the software setup.?

As part of the upgrade to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) 12.1 RU5, all content converts from full definitions to delta definitions. This process is resource intensive and upgrades may take longer than expected. For more details: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH224055

I am quite happy with out Norton as it can be a nuisance. I left it of my new machine. Peace Mal

Good evening. The golden rule with anti-virus programs is that you have only one running in real-time at any one time, so you need to pick one and uninstall the other before we continue. As the tool that we, or more accurately you, are going to use doesn't get on with AVG very well, this reduces the choice that you have. If Norton is still able to update - your subscription hasn't elapsed - then I suggest that you remove AVG, at least for now. If Norton is out of date, then I suggest that you download a copy of the AVG installer, available here, and then uninstall both programs.Whichever way you choose to go, you want to download the ComboFix executable, as per the instructions below, BEFORE you disconnect from the internet and uninstall one or both of your anti-virus programs. Run CF and then, if necessary if you have uninstalled both anti-virus programs, install AVG and then update it once you get back online - you don't want to be connected to the internet without any AV protection.Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs.* Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start. When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply. Let me know how the PC is behaving.* There are two points to note from the instructions page:1) The Recovery Console. It is recommended that you install this as, in c... Read more

Hi, this is my first entry to this site so bare with me if i mess it up

a few months ago i let my sister borrow my laptop. when i got it back the next day i turned it on and it started up as usual but before it went to the desk-top it came up with-

configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
please do not turn off your computer

this is nothing new but it stays on 0% for 1/2 minutes then restarts, goes back to this page and does the same again, round and round in a loop.

i left it running like this for a couple of days to see if anything happened but still the same

does anyone know how to fix this?

A:update configuration HELP

Possibly, your sister powered down the laptop during updates. Try system restore from recovery console:If you have Windows XP CD... (if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)1. Boot from the CD.2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R:3. You'll find yourself at this screen:4. Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.NOTE: at this point your numbers to the right of your keyboard are turned off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers remember to hit the Numbers Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to wait through the previous steps to get back to the console. 5. You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the Enter key. 6. This will bring you to a prompt that says: C:\WINDOWS>7. Type: cd \ Press EnterNote: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work8. The prompt should now say:C:\>9. Type: cd system~1\_resto~1Press Enter.===============================================================================Note: If it gives... Read more

I am in a very strange situation. I suppose my computer was infected with a sort of worm or virus which I probably managed to eliminate with a couple of suggestions from this cool site. But I guess the consequence of the removed infection still remain. I have an always online ADSL connection and all my other internet services work just fine. Emails work, all other sites are normally accessable. The problem is just with these three sites: Symantec.com, Mcafee.com and Sophos.com. Explorer demands password for these sites. I have installed each program seperatly: Norton AntiVirus, Mcafee VirusScan, Sophos and AVG, but none of them are able to get the updated virus list with the live update. The error states that probably internet connection is not established, although I am online the whole time. Does anyone have a clue what's going on? Please help me..

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista and Windows 7

Hey guys, I had an Updating issue recently and am still not clear on the best settings for the Update Settings?

I just installed a bunch of Optional and Recommended Updates, but was sure to exclude the Bad Guys for the W10 Upgrade stuff: KB3035583 and KB2952664

So I still don't know if this is the best or not. I was not accepting Optional and Recommended before, but since having this Update issue though I would change my actions.

This is my current setting:
1. ?Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them? Is this good, or should I got with checking for them Manually.

Now wondering what this setting should be:
2. ?Give me Recommended Updates the same way I receive Important Updates?

Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks, Nasty7

Hi all,

Need some extra help here. I attempted to get the debugging tools to read the minidump files post-mortem, but can only get into safe mode, which doesn't help me. I've attached the zip of the output from the jcgriff2 app.

I'm not positive, but it may be related to an attempt to install Spanish & Japanese optional language packs to Windows 7 Ultimate installation alongside a recommended update.

Initially, it crashed during start up at the 'configuring windows' screen at 15% into it. Two system restores later to take me back two updates, and now it returns to the 'configuring windows' screen on startup and crashes at 0%. Not sure if additional system restores will do much good.

Thanks,

Help!
Had an incomplete install of a program...computer otherwise working fine...did a system restore to try to go back to preinstall...in the system restore shutdown and restart, now hung up in a update configuation loop that is in third step up to 99% that shuts down only to do the same thing over and over again. So my system never gets to the mainscreen acknowledging system was restored.
I tried F8 going to safe mode, but configuation step 3 takes over again, goes to 99% and shuts down to restart.
I tried the vista 64 sp1 disc...cannot acccess another restore point since it says the system is already in restore mode....just never gets there with the endless 3rd step update configuration loop.
The disc also does not offer the repair/update mode as an option...only full install.
I do have norton ghost 14 on the system...so there is a complete backup file on another internal drive...but no way to get to it to initiate a recovery.
VERY FRUSTRATING!!!
Could time remedy the situation...letting the computer lay idle for a few days...then try to boot up??? I've heard that this on occaision could work with Vista.
Any other thoughts???
Thanks!

BTW, computer is a hp desktop with Vista Ultimate 64 sp1, 4 gb ram, and intel dual core processor, with a bunch of bells and whistles.

Hi,

I have an Acer netbook running windows 7 starter...for several days each time I close the laptop there are updates that attempt to install but fails to do so for some reason...there are also issues of configuration, seemingly every time I start the laptop.

I have read the uploader tool page but before going through this process would like to ask why the laptop fails to update ? ...I recently got rid of any microsoft office programs...does this have anything to do with the failure to update ?

below are the updates that have failed several times ... sorry but the image is very small !

A:Windows 7 update failures and configuration issues.

It`s a couple of days since I posted the above but the updating failure continues...I`ve no idea if the failure is caused by this laptop not in fact having the required internal programs to ensure the updates are accepted...something is obviously not right.

edit ti add...maybe the laptop just doesn`t need these updates...?

Had this problem on 2 machines; I read and tried all the fixes suggested on the internet; about a dozen of them over and over again.
Problem is the HARDDRIVE!
I had a fresh install and had the problem with existing harddrive.
Also had problem on an up and running computer about 4 months old; just never got around to fixing it.
I tried all the fixes on the new one to no luck. I know some windows setup settings look for certain hardware for some setup processes so I tried an old drive I have kicking around. I Cloned the new drive onto it and ran the computer and then SP1 and all worked. I cloned back to the new drive and about 187 updates have now installed. It's working perfectly.
I had the same problem on the second computer and cloned it onto a different drive and then to an SSD also; it worked on both drives; also had 187 updates install.
Even after reinstalling the OS twice and immediately trying the SP1 it still didn't work until I cloned to the older harddrives.
Finally!!

A:Windows (7) could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.??

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windows could not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vista to repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else ou... Read more

In the steps that follow, it says to modify UpperFilters and to type PartMgr and click ok. This seems to work for some people, I however already had the PartMgr value on there. Can someone tell me what I can do, besides doing a fresh install?

Thanks

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

I'd avoid IE10 and uninstall the update. It's riddled with bugs.

I need to set up three user accounts on two computers the accounts on each computer is going to be monitored.
Each user will be assigned access for certain folder or files and certain applications, like internet explorer.
And all usb ports and dvd drive will be blocked. Only the admin will be allow to have full access.

So i need to do something that allow ( managers) to monitor employees activity on the system during working hours.

On one pc is windows xp pro on the other os windows 7 home premium.

Any idea how i can acomplish this task?

I.was thinking of group policy on both computers but on home premium there is not group policy.

Also the users will be using almost all the same programs and files just the with different information.

Thank you in advance.

A:group policy configuration and computer configuration question

Read this
But for Windows 7 Home Premium you will not have the
Local Security Policy so you may need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for that.

This is easier to control with a server like Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

I have a Samsung laptop a few years old - Core i7, 2TB HDD, 8gb Memory. It was supplied with Windows 7 and I have the W7 installation dvd that came with it.

Over the years I have booted from this DVD and re-installed a fresh copy of W7 several times with no problems whatsoever.

A few months ago I succumbed and upgraded to Windows 10 - no problems - it all ran fine.

I wanted to go back to W7 so I deleted all partitions on the HDD, booted from the W7 DVD as usual. Selected country:UK and created a new partition on the HDD (whole of the HDD). Files were copied to the HDD in the usual manner, Windows 7 installed up to 100%, then onto features etc. The installation went with no problems up to the fourth step - installing updates. I though it was a few seconds away from completion and re-boot. However, I then got the message 'Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration'.

Repeated several times, deleting and re-creating partition on the disk but the same happened.

In the end, I installed Windows 10 on the HDD by booting from a USB stick with W10 on and it installed no problems.

Anyone got any idea what it going on? It looks like my install of W10 has changed the disk somehow so W7 cannot ever be installed again on the disk.

I have an old P3 system that I let my son use for internet browsing, email, etc. It has been rock solid for 6+ years until lately and I think the issue of not booting properly is that the master CD-ROM gave up the ghost. And so I took that out hoping that is all it will take.

Here is my question (and I feel so much like a noob; I did try to google but I got nothing): Where do I place the tab to take it from slave to single configuration? As slave the tab was placed on the far left in the verticle position. Am I correct in that to make it singular I need to place it horizontally on the bottom two prongs center-right?

I hope I am making myself clear. This is an old system and it has been years since setting it up and I don't have my manuals anywhere. I couldn't even access Buslink's website.

Thanks for your help.

A:CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

The jumper will fit on the pins, based on what is imprinted or embossed on the drive. It is usually very difficult to see... but if you use a flashlight or other device you can place at different angles, you can see how the jumper choices are stamped into the metal. Most often the center two are Slave, the right is Master, and the left is Cable Select.
I suggest you jumper it as master.
If it is a known brand, you can find a drawing on the website of the optical drive manufacturer.

Hello everyone.
here's the thing.. during the early 2000's I hated symantec and it's security product norton , and I've always used NOD32 or Kaspersky .. but since ~ 2011 (I guess) I started to like their products and their new approach to security.
so bottom line is , today, security-wise I do like Norton security , I might even say I love it and I'm really tempted to buy it .. so my question isn't regarding whether it's a good security suit or not, because I believe that it's one of the best right now , whether we talk about security or performance.
So with everything that has been going on in the past years, my concern is about Privacy , what do you think about Symantec ? do you trust them ? and according to that should I go on and buy it ?

P.S : please try to stay focused to the subject.

A:What do you think about symantec ?

I'm glad you added the third choice. Shows insight. Regardless of which vendor you go with, you will end up with some sort of concern about privacy. I trust pretty much any vendor that hasn't done shady things in the past.

I recently installed symantec 9.0 server and the console on our network, now every hour I get a virus found pop up that says it found the eicar test string. Which is great except now I can't stop it, the folder it tells me it found in c:/program files/symantec/savfsme/temp does not have the file in it that it keeps saying it found the virus in. I even deleted the entire temp folder and a hour later I still got the pop up saying it was in that folder. I went back to explorer and the temp file had regenerated on its own. It's like it's creating the file right before it scans and the scan deletes it when it is found. Help

When I try to open Symantec it gives me a different error that it is missing the VPC32.exe file, but only as a user. The file is there, and only recognized when logged as an administrator. I haven't used Norton in years, and I downloaded REVO Free Uninstaller and it was noted that Symantec "Network Driver Update" (NDU)and "Symnet Redirector Updater" (SRU) are listed on the search. Now I assume that these files are left-overs from Norton that didn't uninstall when retrenched Norton, is this correct? Should I uninstall these folders seeing that I uninstalled Norton in many moon ago. In checking out the "Application Data" folder I found a Symantect Folder and I deleted that folder, but the NDU and SRU were not listed. Also those file in the folder were dated mid-2008, which is strange that Norton was uninstalled off my computer a long time ago.

So do I unistall those NDU and SRU files?

Hello Techguys,

A few days ago, I was infected by a Zlob trojan.
I was assisted in removing this threat by one of the Techguy.org experts.
(will not drop username unless ?)

Today, on start up, my AVGFree starts and scans as usual. Two threats are found.
1. ntoskrnl.exe This one was changed. To what, I don't know.
2. Trojan Horse Dialer.RQJ (This one is the intrigueing one.) AVG deleted it

I searched both Symantec for this, as well as, the AVG virus encyclopedia search option. AVG did not have an entry for it. Symantec's site had no listing for a Trojan horse Dialer.RQJ . There were entries for many other dialers and trojans, but not as AVG described.

Am I being misled? Did AVG create a trojan and delete it? What if it is still there?

I am sorry that I sound as if I am panicked, but I am.

Your thoughts, Please.

P.S. I have Vista Home Premium.

The requested file does not even exist on my computer.

A:Symantec Help

Hi pikalax and welcome to TSF ! Which Symantec programs do you have installed ? What antivirus and firewall are you using ? If your product is still supported by Symantec then contact them about that error.

Many users have issues with Symantec or Norton security products. In most cases uninstalling the software and replacing it with a lighter/less invasive security suite solves them. Please refer to these links for removal instructions :
Manual uninstallation documents for Symantec Client Security products
How to fully remove Norton from my pc

Please note that you shouldn't stay connected to the internet with no firewall nor antivirus running. You also shouldn't have more than one firewall and one antivirus running at the same time. Read this if you want to know more : http://www.techsupportforum.com/f174...ed-115548.html

If you want to uninstall the Symantec security suite and replace it by another one then the first thing to do is to download the installer for the new antivirus (AVG, Avast or Antivir are all free, light and efficient antiviruses. If you're in doubt pick one of those) and/or firewall. Then disconnect from the internet (physically : unplug the ethernet cable or turn the router off), uninstall the previous software, restart the computer and install the new one. For most users XP's integrated firewall and one of the above antiviruses will be all you need.

Now, what do you mean by :

We've been using NAV 9.x on our production server for several years now. I'm setting up a new Dell 1800 running windows 2K server on it to replace the old server. Since we're replacing it, I thought we should go to NAV 10.1 since it helps reduce spyware as well as virus's.

I took an image of the server before installing NAV on it, so I can go backwards if I have to.

My problem [according to symantec] is that the kernal space is too small for NAV to run, without giving me warnings in the system log as shown below.

----------------------
Auto-Protect could not scan file C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE for viruses due to low kernel stack.
---------------------
Auto-Protect could not scan file C:\WINNT\system32\wuauclt.exe for viruses due to low kernel stack
---------------------
Auto-Protect could not scan file C:\WINNT\regedit.exe for viruses due to low kernel stack.

There are others, but no need to list them here. I've made registry changes per this link from Symantec, but it didn't help

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...10eaa5fc1148e6f888256bf40056e227?OpenDocument

In the paper, it mention's a hotfix from MS. I'm wondering if I call MS will the call cost me, along with the hotfix.

Has anyone used NAV 10.1 with this issue? If so, what fixes worked?

Thanks

A:Symantec Ver 10.1 -vs- 9.x

Update & Bump...

I've installed Windows 2000 Hotfix KB838804, rebooted the server, and still get Low Kernal Warnings in the System Event Viewer such as these..

Auto-Protect could not scan file C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DoScan.exe for viruses due to low kernel stack.

So the other (when I wans't at home) symantec did a scan, found 15-25 trojan malscripts. When I got home, 80% of icons on my desktop were gone and anything I did before I shut it down did not save.

Even though Symantec said they got rid of everything I have a feeling they didn't. I have a log report from symantec but unfortunately I can't upload files on this froum.

However I have found similar virus names, but under different types on this forum.

The file names follow the following pattern DWHFEA2.tmp.

Regardless I need some more advice. I currently have vista professional.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have two of these set up betwenn two company offices and the tunnels and internet work fine in both. My issue is that when I try to launch a Cisco VPN client to a location outside my network I cant connect.. Inside the network from one office to the other everything works fine, mapping etc.. however once I try to go outside via the internet even with the cisco client box set as the DMZ, I still cant get to the cisco servers or vpn concentrators.. Anyone got any ideas how to work around this?

Thanks,
David
