Hi folks,
I can still remember the date to this day. In early January, I was helping a guy who was once my friend rebuild his brutally and viciously attacked and practically torn-down, server. In the process, I had used the web drive FTp client to help him retrieve some content he needed. There were other things on the accessed fileserver, and I wonder if they could have been the cause of this strange, but never fully understood, phenomenon? A few months later, February 23, 2010, in fact, I bought a subscription to NOD32, and it wasn't until a scan on March 3, 2010, that this happened. I awoke to a list of threats that had been discovered supposedly on my computer. NOD said that it could only delete and quarentine them, which was the option I chose, but the real question is where in the world did this one particular one come from? NOD32 called it TrojanDownloader:Win32/Delf.NZL. I can see that being something since Eset has a few descriptions of the Trojan.Delf family in their encyclopedia. But where the file was located According to NOD makes me wonder if both threats in the list were false positives since one of them had a .txt extension. The trojan downloader was located in my web drive cache folder. Strange, isn't it? Why would a trojan bury itself in my cache since a cache is only meant to be a snapshot, and none of the files inside are ever active? And not to mention, since NOD had scanned prior to then, why hadn't it seen those files before? I know for su... Read more

Hi,
This trusty PC was mainly for running my faves - Battlefield 1942 , call of duty, - it did great except it slowed down when my son and I tried Battlefield2 and halo (multiplayer and single player)

System:

AMD atlon 1.6 cpu 1800+
nvidia 4600ultra 128mb ultra video card
384 mb ram pc2100? i think
asus av7333 MB
(onboard sound)
60 gig HD (still only 45gigs full after 3 years)
10/100
300 or 350 watt pwr supply (prob300)
*Windows xp-pro without updates

I think the system is corrupted now - even with the norton security firewall and antivirus etc. because the windows updates could never be installed and I couldn't patch anything without a real windows disc. It starts twice - works ok and then bombs unexpectedly every 30 minutes or so. (NEEDS FIXING)

here's the bad part - the shop that built this for me never gave me the windows disc. (I didn't pay attention)
I guess this MUST GET A NEW WINDOWS DISC INSTALL and I'm ok with that -

My questions are

1. which windows? XPpro or XPhome or xpmediacenter etc?

2. should I buy a new HD and set it up with that and then once everything is great - hookitup and grab the old family photos etc that were on the old HD? Whats a good HD sizedata ol

3. what is a good lowercost cost videocard that would play battlefield2 online without frameyness?

First, remove Norton, it´s a GREAT resource hog. Thy the free AVG antivirus.

1.- I would choose XP professional, but if you want to keep costs as low as possible, get XP Home, it is very good. I fully recommend it.

2.-That depends on you. If like high res videos or movies, or a lot of photos, I recommend a 160Gb HD. If you don´t like that, a 80GB should be plenty.
What is your current HD?

3.-Again, that depends on the motherboard. It could have a standard PCI slot (the long white ones) AGP ( a little shorter slot located near the CPU) or PCI-Express ( the fastest and better slot). If you can tell us the EXACT model of the motherboard, we can help you.

4.- If you can afford it, yes. Go with AMD if possible.

5.- Sure, you should have at least 1024MB of RAM if you wanna play Battlefield 2 without too much lag.

Hope this long post helps!

I bought a new laptop 3 years ago when Vista first arrived. I had a number of difficult issues with program compatibility (printer, sound drivers camera programs etc.) and was always searching for drivers to download and had issues with the Windows dirvers. I even had a difficult time getting SP1 to install. (finally had to remove sound drivers that conflicted to get SP1 in and then reinstall them).

I plan to buy a new laptop next year with Windows 7 as mine is slowing down and no room for more Ram I also wanted to wait until after Windows 7 SP1. Meanwhile I just bought a new Cannon Camera (CD says XP and Vista only) and a new printer and I may need some other software.

My question is, am I setting myself up now for big problems later when I buy a Windows 7 Notebook if I am buying things now that do not show Windows 7 ready yet? Will it be all the Vista problems all over again or with Windows 7 is it much easier and smoother to update and run Vista approved software? I even wonder if I should return my camera and wait until the camera's Windows 7 version is out...
Thank you,
G

I was reading some of the questions in Windows XP and I came on the question of regcleaning. I read it and the replies, and one expert said "Easy Cleaner". Techguy mostly avices to use this program.

So I went to this program, and it has this other program that is called "RegRepair". This will fix your PC, and avoid reformatting your hard drive, with this utility.

My computer is Win XP and I am trying to clean it up.

Has anyone heard of program? Is it ok or not?

Thx

Is it worth it too scheduled tasks or is it just being lazy? I was told you use up more disk space by doing this is that true.
I know this is not a real problem I'm just curios do not want to waste anybody's time.
Thanks

A:Solved: Wondering

Scheduling tasks uses no space. It is often very convenient to schedule things that need to be done often, or that you might forget, such as backups of important data so that it won't get lost when the drive fails, defragmenting and disk checking, and so on.

Forgive me if this ground has been covered before.

What is "media##fastclick.net"? When you click on it, it doesn't maximize -- just sits there. The "##" is a two or three digit number that's never the same.

This minimized box appears on my desktop occasionally, and I usually just right-click/close it to make it go away.

Is this some kind of key logger?

A:Solved: Just wondering

Hi, Usually it's a popup advertisement...some things block the full ad, so you only see the one inch square pop, or you may hear a click or two....sometimes, I get the bigger ad, usually it is a spyware warning (those are NEVER legitimate, dont click on any of those...) or some other ad. Just close them...

They appear on some good sites, shame really...

I use the Google toolbar which has a popup blocker that works pretty well, lots of these around, even Yahoo has one on their toolbar now. Many stand alone popup blockers around, some are not so good.

I'm just wondering, but are my laptop specs good enough for all around home stuff and games.
Here they are:

Windows Home Premium (Should I get Service Pack 1?)
HP Pavilion dv9727cl Notebook PC
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00 GHZ
Memory (RAM): 1983 MB
System Type: 32-bit Operating System
Hard Drive: 220 GB

No clue what's missing, but this is what my computer shows.

PS: Is it bad to download too many programs because I have an anti-virus, CS:S, HL2, DoD, Xfire, Ventrilo, and I was thinking of downloading SC. TY

A:[SOLVED] Just Wondering?

Yeah, most modern games don't require more than 1GB of RAM. The very newest ones, though... some of them require 2GB of RAM. Crysis and Assassin's Creed for the PC both require 3GB of RAM.

I have 120GB of space, and I have a LOT of games.

Helloo, I think this is the correct place for this kinda question, if not, apologies

I was looking for people opinion on how well my PC will run certain games (if it will run them at all that is!)

I have a HP All-In-One 200 Desktop
- 3GB RAM
- Intel Pentium Dual Core E5500 Processor running at 2.8GHz
- Intel G43/45 Express Chipset (Not sure about the dedicated memory, pretty sure my BIOS said 256Mb but I'm not too sure if that's correct)

I was hoping to run games Like Bioshock and Left4Dead.. Do you think it will be alright? If so, what graphics settings should I be aiming for?

Anything else you need to know just ask

I had 126 windows pop up and had to shut down. Before that the task mgr showed the following (don't know if this will help but anyways) it said hammer_24747 shitter_4747 spammer4747,hammer474747 dabomb474747 widow4747 I emailed yahoo but they never replied. I ran my virus scanners but it didn't seem to pick much up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can go to a sight like this one (http://www.refdesk.com/tx.html) and then sometimes days or weeks later come back and the item I looked at will still be highlighted. This is after running CCleaner and doing a check with Super WinSpy and seeing there are no cookies and the index.dat files have been purged and also deleting the pagefile on reboot.

So how can that link still have the newspaper link I clicked on all those weeks ago still highlighted?

This happens on some other sites also.

PS-Do you see any of the items highlighted?

A:Solved: Just Wondering

I just did a couple of tests and the item does not show up after cleaning with CCleaner. I must have got my sequence of cleaning and checking messed up.

Hello...

i always do scandisk and then defragmenting once every 2 weeks and wondering if it is appropriate as to do maintenance on a pc? well i always do this but just to get some feedbacks from u guys or any opinion if im doing this right or anything.. just please suggest....

Btw, between the two task (pic attached) .. which one is better or is there any 3rd party software better from what the Micro$oft provide...

Thanx!!

A:[SOLVED] just wondering..

you are best to tick both those check boxes when running a disk check.

however the ntfs filesystem is actually fairly ok at keeping itself tidy so maybe you could get away with defragging a little less often. usually fragmentation will only reduce performance significantly when free hard disk space is less than 20%

it is also useful to clear out temp files (a useful program called ccleaner does this for you), and run antispyware software (spybotsd and lavasoft adaware are both good).

WinXP-IE8-Outlook Express6

Good morning:

With all the "advise" and internet articles I am reading about the end of XP support in April 2014 and what I should be doing about it, I'm wondering if utilizing the Google Chrome browser and Google Gmail exclusively (both of which I have on my computer, but use infrequently) instead of IE8 and OE6 is a viable option and may improve my computer security if I choose to stay on XP after April?

For me, an older user who is "careful" but savy in my computer usage and will most likely continue to use XP after April, see Windows 7 as the only other option for me if I am forced to change! In reading, it seems email will be the main venue for hacker attacks on older XP systems and Google apparently provides excellent security for browser and email?.

The idea of changing to another operating system just seems too complicated with too many plus and minus pointed out just to get up and running. Also the benefits available in upgrading other than security improvement are of no interest to me at all.

I am stuck in an age void and too fixed in my ways to change and I know there are millions of users just like me with the same feelings.

Please comment to an old guy in need of advise! I value the opinions on this site above all!!

I'm finding it pretty hard to find information anywhere on this particular trojan, Avira Antivirus calls it TR/Dldr.Java.2349. I was just curious if anyone could tell me what it does?

Thanks

A:Solved: Just wondering if anyone would be able to tell me about this trojan

This is the only amount of information that may be linked to the trojan name you had supplied. Hopefully this may give you any information but I am not sure if it is what you are looking for..

TR/Dldr.Java.OpenConnection.AQ

TR/Dldr.Java.OpenConnection.AQ is a trojan that downloads diverse packed malware infections onto the infected system and gives access to distant hackers. TR/Dldr.Java.OpenConnection.AQ infects systems through shareware/freeware, ActiveX, video codec and file-sharing program downloads or through adult content web sites. After activating trojan TR/Dldr.Java.OpenConnection.AQ, it will generate and install corrupt nc.exe files in system32 and flood the pc with mass pop up messages.

----EDIT----
Additional facts..

TR/Dldr.Java.OpenConnection.AQ trojan indications:

Strange Dldr.Java.OpenConnection.AQ malware files running in system task manager, persistent tower speaker beep sounds
Valid system files, registry keys and dlls files missing, resulting "Blue screen" error
Hijacked desktop toolbar, wallpaper, tray icons and windows shortcuts
Pop up blocker software quits working, overflowed computer with adult and porn pop ups
Browser settings and seach pages redirected to annoying Web sites
Difficult to clean Dldr.Java.OpenConnection.AQ manually, infects system files to resume at Windows start up
Hinder Internet transfer rate, decreased browsing performance and frequent browser shut downs

A:Solved: Wondering if I am sharing my memory???

Start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information.

Look to see how much memory is available to windows. If all the memory isn't available go into your bios and look for a place to disable onboard video.

I was just wondering, a couple of days ago I was playing a game on my PC, and during it I requested a document to be printed. While I requested it to be printed, a popup popped up saying that the computer virtual memory is low (because of the game). I returned to the game and I saw that the printer wasn't printing anything, so I exited the game, and I checked the printer icon in the taskbar. There was a red ! next to the printer icon. I double clicked on it and it said that there was a printing error. How did it happen?

i been hearing around on blogs and forums that windows "reserves" 20% of you internets bandwidth for " background" updates. is this true if so what does it fully affect and how do i disable or atleast lower the precent

A:been wondering about networking+ windows

Hello Emmett,

This is really nothing to worry about or needs to be changed.

By default, Windows can reserve up to 20 percent of the network bandwidth for QoS traffic handled by the QoS Packet Scheduler. One hundred percent of the network bandwidth is available to be shared by all programs unless a program (Ex: Windows Update) specifically requests priority bandwidth. This 20 percent reserved bandwidth is still available to other programs unless the requesting program (Ex: VoIP applications) is sending data. Windows can then restrict the best effort traffic to a minimum of 80 percent of the bandwidth to the other programs so that the high priority traffic can be accommodated. If the program that reserved the bandwidth is not sending sufficient data to use it, the unused part of the reserved bandwidth is available for other data flows on the same host.

(same in Windows 7)
QoS Bandwidth Reserve Limit

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Last night, just before bed time, my wife informed me that she had seen, earlier in the day, a message indicating low disk space on our Windows 7 (Home Premium) Laptop. I took a look at the properties on C drive and it was down to about a half GB free space. This was on an 80 GB partition on which Windows is located. I ran Disk Cleanup and there is still only a bit less than 3 GB free space. I took a quick look at the properties of each folder at the root of C drive and found that the C:\Windows folder occupied about 48 GB. Isn't this way too much? Could this be related to Windows 10 to which we never upgraded? I'll look a little further this weekend to see if I can locate the bulk of the files, but I'm guessing I'm going to have to remove some Windows Updates or something, and if so, I'll likely need a little coaching on that.

Okay, in my grade 11 engineering class, we have been taking apart computers to see how they work, and then putting them back together again. I have had alreadly had experience with this so I knew what to take out and not tot take out. Most computers were second hand, and had 2000 on them, except for mine which was very, very interesting. I had a computer with a version of NT Server Edition, it also had a AGP 4x card, and Sound Card, SCISI Drive, a ATA Hard Drive, CD and Floppy, and surprisingly a Tape Drive. My teacher who is wonderful at her job, also surprised all of us since she only had boot floopies for 98 and not 2000. She wants us to find ways of installing and reformating the computer for 98. I downloaded DBAN but she wants a reformat not a wipe, so how will I reformat the NFTS drives to FAT 32, and what is the easiest possible way of doing so. Also since these are second hand, mine has a an account on it and even if we connected it back to the school network it will not see the domain for that network making it not accessible by her, or me. My teacher being the being a network admin, doesn't know the password. So is there anyway I can do this without the need of logging into a account, or can I reset the account password?
Thanks
Ken

A:Wondering about reformating Windows NT Server Edtion to Windows 98

Assuming there is no data on the drive you need to save, just boot with the Win98 disk (don't need CD-ROM support, run fdisk and delete the NTFS partition, then create a new partition. You'll reboot to the Boot floppy again (with CD-ROM support this time) then format the disk as FAT32.
Insert the Win98 CD, switch to the drive letter of the CD (usually E if only one hard drive as Ram drive is assigned D) and type setup.

Enjoy

If there's nothing in there you want to keep, and you don't plan on going back to the previous Windows installation within 30 days if you upgraded from say Windows 7/8, then it's safe to delete.

Hello!
I currently have a HP laptop which originally had Windows Vista installed. When I got the laptop it had a few virus' and wasn't starting correctly but I managed to get it running decently well just by going through forums and troubleshooting each step of the way. Then I decided I would install Windows 7, since I go to school and I can get a free (downloaded) copy I figured why not. It worked much better so it seemed like a good decision. It's been just over year that I've been using it in this condition and it's working fine, but it has seemed to be going a bit slower lately. Also, there is no point in Vista still being installed since it is never used, so is there a way to uninstall the Vista without losing any information on my Windows 7 copy? I came across some info about the boot being partitioned to the Vista copy so I don't want to do anything that is irreversible.

Alternatively, I could download another version of Windows 7 and save it somewhere (a removable hard drive?), then completely reformat my hard drive and install that downloaded copy so that i would be starting new. This option sounds better to me if doable. I could possibly acquire a disk, but i believe that option is not free from my school (which isn't as nice, since i'm a broke student).

I'm not quite sure the route I should take, and also what exactly I should do. So what I am asking for is some suggestions on which route would be better, and then possibly the general steps I would need to... Read more

A:Wondering about a new Windows 7 install process (no disk)

Look over these same steps for doing a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
to see how your Win7 install compares. If you're game we can help you get and keep a perfect install.

And if you'll post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image we can help you remove Vista if it's still on the drive.

Additionally you can reboot and tap the ESC key for BIOS Boot Menu to select Diagnostics to see if they still run from boot. If so then that would be the only partition you'd want to keep for sure if you're ready to reinstall.

Hi all,

About a month ago my computer was misbehaving and needed repair, so I went to Best Buy. Long story short, I did not backup my computer to the utmost. When they reinstalled windows, I was bummed but went along my merry way, not even wondering if file recovery after Win Reinstallation was possible. About a month into using the computer, and not finding what I was looking for, I thought 'hey, maybe file recovery is possible. Got EaseUS recovery, and found both Download Metadata and recovered Bookmark files for Google Chrome that are likely to have what I need (just the name of the app or the website I found it on.

Problem is that the recovered files look like they're in Chinese or Korean or similar. At least one is a mixture of what looks like a data, or at least structured info that then peters out into nonsense again. Are these files that just got partially or completely overwritten, or is there some way to turn them into something that Google Chrome can recognize?

I don't actually need the whole files, just having urls or downloaded file names and where they were downloaded from probably would have what I want. Anyone have a problem like this?

Here's an example of text from a Bookmarks file:

Usually when Windows is reinstalled, you'll have a Windows.old folder in your root drive with all your old data on it. Have you looked for that?

Ok this all started a few hours ago, I was trying to download a file from Download.com. I got a trojan horse warning from my Avast virus scanner. So I did run a virus check. This is where I did something stupid. I did a virus scan while in safe mode. There I saw the two paths for the virus trojan horses. I thought why not delete them directly so I did the first one. The second I messed up big time and deleted something in the explorer directory. When I returned to normal mode for windows...A few things were different. the recycle bin icon was gone. The start > All programs will not list all my programs. My wireless connection will not start up at booting. I ran two stupid registry programs. Nothing. I tried to restore to an earlier time and nothing. It wouldn't let me. I am pulling my hair out because I am stuck. here's my hijackthis log:

I am helping a guy with his computer.
Ran
Adware SE 1.06 it was clean
Ran SPybot S&D the newest one and it had Backweb 57 them but I think that was from his HP so I did not delete them the rest was clean.
He has spyblaster up to date
Spywareguard
IE-Spyad
scriptdefender
McAfee antivirus

While I was updateing and running those programs mcafee popped up and said it caught and cleaned a virus W32/Bagle.dldr.gen so I continued what I was doing.

He had not done that validation thing with his windows updates so he wasn't getting them so I did the validation download and he had 16 updates waiting to be downloaded and installed so I did those.

THen I thought since mcafee caught that virus I would run a full scan
I turned off system restore and ran a full scan
it caught
3 of the W32/Bagle.dldr.gen
and 1 W32/Sasser.worm ftp
it said it cleaned and deleted them.

so I turned system restore back on
I ran a HJT Log and this is what I came up with, if someone could help me with this Log I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Windows XP has never been re-installed since I got the PC back in 2007.

Hello all,

I'm running a Windows 7 Machine. Dell Inspiron 560 - 64 bit, Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5700 @3.00GHz, 3003Mhz.. 4GB DDR3 Ram, etc. If any other info helps lemme know, but I don't think it'll matter for my question.

The system typically comes with an onboard video card, I didn't want this and got a separate one. Anyway, the upgraded video card from dell (Nvidia GeForce 310) has plugs for HDMI, DVI, and VGA. It only supports using 2 displays at once. I want to use 3. I came across an older card in a different computer of mine. I didn't really know what it was, so I put it in to see what would happen. Turns out its win98 era "Expert Color CP765LV2". Windows recognizes this card, and tries to use its default vga graphics adapter driver. This driver doesn't work for it. It'll ask you to restart, you restart and you get "error 10" (incompatible driver error). This loop will go on indefinitely.

Doing some googling, I have found the original driver for this card. However, I can't figure out how to make Windows use it. Seems like no matter what I try, Windows insists on trying to use the generic vga driver. I can't manually install the driver (Well maybe I can, but the downloaded file has all sorts of interesting stuff, and no executable file of any kind. I'm unfamiliar with that era of computing, so its very foreign to me.) Running a wizard such as "Driver Genius" does not display any issues w... Read more

Hi! I have put a "Total Time" field in a form to calculate the difference in minutes from the "Start Time" to the "End Time". I was worried about getting the incorrect time span when the time crossed over midnight. Well, I got that part right, but when I enter times in the same day (1:15pm-1:30pm) it gives me the time difference PLUS 1440 minutes. Please tell me what I need to do to fix this! Thank you!

Recently I had to replace the harddrive on my desktop computer. When I reinstalled windows, the time update, for both time.nist.gov, and for time.windows.com. Today I tried it on my laptop, and both of them failed again. Both do use a different Windows Key, so the copies are in no way related. Does anyone have a clue what might be wrong?

Thanks.

Also, windows update does indeed work. Just not the time update.

Hi All,

I have an issue I can not seem to solve. I have a new custom build PC.

Gigabyte Motherboard
AMD Athlon X2 240
4GB RAM
320GB WD RE3 HDD

I have installed both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 7 Ultimate and I have had the same issue with both.

At boot up, after going through bios, when the 'Starting Windows' splash screen comes up, it takes about 65 seconds for the colors to start showing up and swirl around to form the Windows Logo. Once logged in to windows, it runs lightning fast.

I have also installed Win7 on 3 other machines, 2 of which are P4's with 2GB Ram and the other a Turion X2 with 4 GB Ram. All of these machines take about 5 seconds at the splash screen before the flag colors start coming in and are booted completely into windows in 45 seconds or less.

As I said, this is a brand new build, no additional software installed.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Randy

I'm using an XP OS and the time/date are wrong. I've tried all of the typical fixes for syncing but no matter what I do it sends back the following: 'an error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with xxxxx'.

I am an admin, I've tried restarting the windows time service, and restarting the computer. I've unreg'd as well through cmd. Any other ideas?

Thanks for looking.

First it displays error msgs re. delayed write failed-data lost-event log write failed also. It then boots to the blue screen. Try to boot from the floppy rescue disc and get NTLDR is missing. Booting from w2kp setup, installing sata drivers and repairing the OS fixes it. I suppose setup is running chkdsk. At first it seemed that Comodo antivirus beta was causing the problem since the error screens mentioned the program. Got rid of it and all was fine for a week or so. Then last night it crashed while emule was running and emule was mentioned in the error msgs. Btw the sys evevt log is corrupt now and the rescue disc boots ok
running w2kp on a MSI sata MB
2 60gb sata hds
456 mb ram
Avg antivius finds no problems a (neither did Comodo av)
Aside from the obvious question: WTF is causing this ? I`m wondering if it might be a good idea to install a backup OS to boot from in case the windows repair fails. The OS is on a small (5Gb) partition. Can I create a small partition on the remainder of the drive containing the OS and install either w2kp or dos 6.22 or will I have to format the first sata and install both OSes on the same partition?
Now that I have the hang of it, its an easy thing to fix- just takes a bit longer to boot
The big question is; is a problem going to develop that w2kp setup cant repar ?
Thanks

Believe I can mark this one solved. Apparently the Emule/temp folder, which was on drive C, was too big to fit on it. Apperently this was the same problem with Comodo,... Read more

HI, I am running Windows 7 64-bit, Service pack 1. I recently began a new job and a softphone was installed on my computer via IT support. I had no problems with the time. Yesterday when troubleshooting some problems with the software, the IT guy mentioned I had a couple of Windows updates that needed to be installed. After we disconnected (time was still current and correct at this point), I installed the updates and rebooted. Later that evening, I noticed that my time was 1 hour off. I went in and manually changed the time and it was fine. About 20 minutes later, it had reset itself back to 1 hour ahead. This time I went in and chose a different server and had it re-sync itself with that new server. I reset the time and about 30 minutes later, I noticed it had changed itself again. I am not certain when it is doing it, but it does do it. This time, I went in and made myself mountain time and corrected the time. I thought stupidly that if it was boosting itself an hour ahead of CST that maybe it would rectify itself if I moved to Mountain time. Nope, again it set itself to the time of EST. No matter what time zone I chose, it is going to reset itself to whatever time EST is. It doesn't change the zone, just the time. I rebooted and checked my BIOS time. I was incorrect but I corrected it. I rebooted again and the BIOS time was correct and is still correct. No matter what I do, that time will change about 15 to 20 minutes after I manually change it.

My windows take a very log time to log off, it also sometimes after it logs off the screen will go black and the green light on my moniter will go from green to orange (which i believe means it is not getting a signal). after a while it the light will turn green again and the picture will come back. i dont know if these two problems are linked or not. the problem that i care about the most is the long log-off time. i have run virus scans, and microsoft anti-spyware. so i do not have any viruses or spyware. the programs that i have in the system tray when it loads are, creative volume control, microsoft anit-spyware, norton internet security, norton anit-virus auto protect, hotsync (palm pilote), and a program that tells if my printer is connected (hp printer). when i go to log-off i close all of these programs except the two norton programs. but it still takes a long time to log-off. the last two programs will close and then it just sits there. i have looked everywhere for the answer and i have done alot of work but nothing has worked. i do not believe i have a roaming user profile, because i have been told that might be the problem. but tell me how to check anyway. any other ideas of what might be causing this?

A:(Solved) - Having a hard time with getting windows update to work

Looks like it is fixed now.  Thank you so much for the help given.
Last thing I tried was going to Dell support and giving a couple things a shot.

Open RegEdit and navigate to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\
Windows\WindowsUpdate Remove
any and all values within this key. Most likely, the culprit is a faulty Windows Update source server. Sometimes this is the result of a latent or previous infection. Finally, download and run Microsoft
FixIt 50202. Try the Default settings first, and if that does not work, try Aggressive. Reboot
the computer and check to see that Windows Update is working properly.
I deleted a key in the winupdate key, then ran this fixit (this one didnt error out, but that might be because of the deleted key)

After I tried those two things and restarted, I updated 17 updates and all is fine now.
Again, thanks for the help

Since the new law was passed last year to have an earlier DST starting this year on April 2nd, does anyone know how Windows software will handle this change?

Will it be dependent on the Windows Time Service in WinXP, and what about earlier Windows OSes?

Hello,

Recently, In the past couple weeks, I've had this annoying problem with my Acer Aspire laptop. My Windows logo screen hangs for well over 30 seconds, then goes to a black screen, (which it has never done before), hangs there, then goes to the Welcome screen, where again that hangs for over 30 seconds. I am running Windows 7 32 bit OS. It also seems to take a while to access the internet as well.

I've read some online posts and not sure if it's an update issue or not. (KB980408) I've tried the Microsoft "Fix It" tool, system restore, sfc/scannow and even uninstalled and reinstalled AV figuring that was a problem. None of the things worked.

Wasn't sure if I should uninstall updates and see if that's where the problem started. Any ideas??

Hi all - I am running windows XP media edition on a dell xps 400 system that is about a year and a half old, and has NEVER had a single problem. Three days ago when I went to turn on the computer, about two minutes after it started loading the specific users profile, it froze. I rebooted, it did it again. Every user is the same, it will not load. It works perfectly in safe mode. I can't figure out what the problem is. I am not that savvy with windows stuff, but I know how to use all my spyware, virus programming, etc. I have ran these. I did find a few trojans, but they were quarantined and they were fixed, according to the log. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

You should not run both. Zone Alarm is better because it has two protection so you should use that and turn off the XP one.

I recently changed our wireless routers security from W.P.A. to W.E.P.. I downgraded because my sister purchased a internet T.V.box so she can watch her favorite foreign language shows. The box only accepts W.E.P. encryption.

I use a WRT54GL which I loaded up with Tomato V 1.21. After the changes to our router, the laptop and one of our wireless dekstop PC (both machines with XP) keeps getting disconnected. My sisters' Ipod Touch works fine though. Sometimes it would show not connected but it actually has connection. Websites, I.M. and pinging worked but for only sometime and it will disconnect. I will reconnect (it takes longer than WPA) and would show connected then change to not connected after sometime.

Both PC and laptop only use the MS XP Wireless Zero Configuration.

Edit: Should I just forgo with wireless encryption (WEP, WPA) for MAC filtering? Or can I have both? Redundancy? Cheers!

I am not very experienced and running windows XP with IE6. When I right click the time on toolbar and get the actual clock, it is showing it correctly as 6:00 PM. This just happened sometime yesterday and I find no settings to get it back to showing regular time. Any suggestions as how to get it back?

Hello..

Im on a domain

Im right clicking a folder and checking out its security settings becuase i want to see who has access to this particular object.

Ive noticed a few times over the years that sometimes here a sid show up like this:

(user)?-S-1-5-21-73563837363-893763837363-83736378383-1005

(meaning little clear head with question mark icon (overlapping head) followed by long sid)

anyways...normally its just users and groups. and not just some sort of id.

Does anyone know why this shows up sometimes?

These users have full control
-Me
-Admin
- and this strange sid that appeared out of nowhere lol.

A:Solved: Wondering why "(user)?-SID" displays in file properites > security tab

Could it be that the folder was created by a user account that was later deleted? That would leave SIDs with no corresponding user profile or Security information in the registry or on the domain. That could explain why the user name is unknown. The SID you show appears to be a local account so you should see the SID as a keyname in the registry under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

If the key doesn't exist or the user name listed under the key with that name no longer has an account on the machine it could explain what you are seeing.

I recently tried to install Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 on Windows XP but a problem occurred with the installation so I canceled and postponed it for a while.

The problem now is, every time I open anything on Windows XP (any folder, HDD, C:, D:, recycle bin, control panel, etc.), a dialogue box appears saying: "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007
. . ." with a cancel button on the bottom right. I have to press cancel every time and it gets really annoying. Also, I don't want to install Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 anymore. I don't know why that weird thing happens since I'm not opening a Word/MS Office document for it to prompt me to install it.

How do I get rid of that dialogue box?

Hi,

I am experiencing strange problem with my Windows XP machine. After Windows XP starts up - my machine hangs for 5 minutes and wait for the Security Center's Firewall alert pop-up. During this time, I can access my computer and other files, but most of the programs don't launch. Also the internet doesn't work till this time. Only after the Windows Security Center's pop-up appears saying "Your firewall is turned off" does the machine starts properly.
This alert vanishes after a second or so and then the internet connection icon appears in the task bar.
I had avast anti-virus installed on my machine and I read on a couple of forums that this might be causing the particular problem - so I've uninstalled avast and installed AVG antivirus.
Still the problem is persisting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

A:[SOLVED] Windows XP takes long time to load programs

so you get a message that the firewall is turned off? How long has that been happening, does it turn itself on at all. My suggestion would be to post on our malware forum; there is a sticky at the top of that forum to explain what they need from you to start with. However I do see that you were able to uninstall avast and install avg. Do you have malwarebytes installed at all. Perhaps firstly you could try a scan with avg and see if it shows anything, and download malwarebytes and scan with that. I suggest these things because you get the message about your firewall being turned off which doesn't seem right.

I have a 4 year old computer that runs perfectly, except when I turn it off at night and then back on the next day, I loose a few hours on the time date at bottom of screen. I ajust each time I use it but the same thing happens each time I turn it off. Could it be the clock battery or ? My operating system is Windows XP Home
Thanks Lc

A:Windows XP time/date clock looses time after shut down.

Welcome to TSG...A bad CMOS battery will cause your machine to lose time. If the system is four years old, you're eligible for that issue...also, if the system has spent any lengthy amount of time (weeks or more) unplugged from AC power, it's more likely to happen.

Next reboot (after leaving it overnight), enter BIOS (setup) and see if the time there is slipping as well.

The battery itself (if that's what's bad) is cheap to replace...less than five bucks.

Please give us some specs on the hardware-make, model, etc.-and we can help you with battery replacement instructions.

I use QuattroPro 9 for spreadsheets. From time to time, it stops working and I have to reinstall the programme before I can use it again, and then it works for some more time. Running win 2000 pro SP4. every time i reboot, certain program settings are lost. for example, my zonealarm settings are lost, and all program net access authorizations have to be re-authorized, when the programs attempt to connect to the net. It will not remember the "always use this answer" option, that you can check in zonealarm to keep from having to continue to re-authorize the program each time it is run. Does anyone know what could be causing this? thanks in advance for any advice..

A:Solved: Windows 2000 pro forgets zonealarm settings every time i reboot

Hiya

I was about to move this to Software, but you say other programs are having problems.

Which version of ZoneAlarm are you running, free or pro? Is it just the initial startup on the internet that it forgets, or any programs that are wanting to go out/come in? If its the former, have a look at this:

Depending on your version (I'm on Pro), look for this:

Program Control tab, Main option. On the Alert Adviser, is it set to Auto or Manual? Also, the same for Program Control.

Hello everyone, I am new here and this is my first post. When I woke up this morning I noticed that the time on my laptop has gone back an hour already due to daylight savings time, this is not ment to change back an hour for another week yet. I had a look on Microsoft's website for a fix for this problem and found out there was an update for it in November 2008, I downloaded this fix (Update for Windows XP (KB955839) and went to install it. When I go to install it it comes up with "Update cannot be installed as a newer or same timezone update has already been installed on the system". If anyone has any information or a fix for this it would be kindly appreciated.

Steps taken:

-Fresh install (From factory recovery partition) of windows 7, fully updated and drivers installed.

-CMOS Battery Replaced (&Tested with voltmeter)

-Bios Flashed & updated

-windows time service is disabled via services.msc

-"synchronize with timer server" unchecked in advanced time settings.

Further information

BIOS time resets to 01/01/2009 00:00:00 when windows time is updated/changed manually. If windows time is not changed manually, bios time remains accurate.

Upon restart after windows time change, and directly entering bios, the date and time aboved is what the bios time is set to.

Recurring problem

A:BIOS Time Resets if and only if windows time is changed

Hope someone has a better idea, but the first thing I thought of is damage occurred when flashing the bios. I recommend not doing that merely as an update unless a problem is present.

I was trying to sync Windows time with Internet timer Server. I was following this tutorial : Time Synchronization - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

For the first option, I couldn't couldn't find the necessary options.

For the second option, I've already set my settings right.
But, still my windows 8 time was showing wrong.

I had to change my BIOS time to make the necessary change to Windows time.

So, what happened here. Can windows 8 override BIOS time? or How can I set Windows time to Internet time server even if my BIOS time is wrong.

Thank you for your help.

A:Synchronize windows time with internet time server.

Yes the OS can override the BIOS time. It uses UTC to update. Check your time zone in Date & Time tab, to see if that is why your time is off.
