Random characters and capitals

Q: Random characters and capitals

Hi all,

Recently had perfectedsecurity virus that hijacked my homepage. Followed some previous threads on here and seem to have killed it.

Used ATF cleaner, Smitrem and ewido but not sure if advice was all applicable to me.

At the same I developed a problem where I'm getting random characters and capitals inserted whenever I type anything anywhere. The cursor also jumps to other lines etc.

Has just taken 5 mins to type this single line. Without constant correction it would have said this......

'hWES SINGLE LINEHas just taken 5 mins tweboo type tp0'

Using XP home edition SP2 on a recently purchased notebooK.

Hope someone can help.

I've been getting these "end program XXX" where XXX is always 3 random characters when I log off from my XP user account. Last 3 XXX values I got were 440, 2A0, 1A0. I don't see any of these 3 character programs in task manager. And it only seems to happen when I log into XP with my account, then do a "switch user" and log in with my wife's account, then log off from her account.

Could it be some malware?? I'm running ZoneAlarm with Avast... I also just did a full scan with AdAware and it found nothing. I found posts elsewhere about the same exact problem, but in every case, there was no explanation/solution posted.

Any help would be appreciated!

3 Computers of 5 exhibit this issue

Problem: at different times and different applications, after having not typed anything on the keyboard, she will start typing and it appears to show "random" keystrokes.

after plenty of testing we determined it is not "random", once we determine it has started pressing the same key over and over will cause it to display the the characters in order "!@#$..." going down the qwerty keyboard and starting over once it reaches "bnm,./" the first run is with SHIFT on the second run is non-shifted and continues to repeat.

sometimes opening notepad will cause this to stop, sometimes CTRL/ALT/DEL causes it to stop, sometimes ESC does, we have not found any way to consistently get this behavior to stop.

During the research we have ran, many Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, and Anti-Rootkit software packages none of which have come up dirty, HiJackThis has been ran with nothing out of the ordinary.

Being a Computer Repair Tech by trade, I have finally exhausted all of my resources and am completely baffled by this issue. So I am asking for some help as you may find something I have missed.

A:Random Characters Typed

Ok further research, after running "Root Repel" shows that the keyboard "events" are being handled by klif.sys which is made by Kaspersky Labs and installed by ZoneAlarm extreme. The file is part of their Anti-Keylogger system... Which should inject "random" characters to the command stack which most keyloggers read to capture the keystrokes, but will still send the right keys to the window in which you are typing.

What this means is... somewhere the klif.sys has a bug in which the "scrambled" keys are being sent to the window in which you are typing...

Is it fixed? I Contacted ZoneAlarm and they have a new version (odd the auto update didn't say there was one) Downloaded and intsalled... no problems yet...

the file klif.sys is installed with other Anti-Virus products, I am using ZoneAlarm and had this issue so it may only be a ZoneAlarm issue but it could still be something with the klif.sys file and not ZoneAlarm

My klif.sys before updating was version
after updating ZoneAlarm it is still version

I will let you know once further test has been done

Firstly can I apologise if this thread is in the wrong place. The problem I am having is driving me mad, and while I don't think it's a hardware issue, I had no idea where else on this site to post.

Now to business...

My PC seems to be typing random numbers whenever any text box is selected in any program or website. Please note it is a PC, not a Laptop. All the solutions I have found so far relate to the touch pad on Laptops but that can't be the issue here.

When I unplug the keyboard the PC continues to type random numbers. On restarting the PC the problem goes away for a while, but soon raises it's ugly head again. Sometimes the issue gets even more bizarre and extreme whereby pressing keys on the keyboard will launch programs. For instance, the other day I pressed "S" and the PC loaded Windows Media Player!

I have searched and searched for answers, trying everything I can think of, but the results from Google tend to be unhelpful when you type in things like "Help, my keyboard's gone loopy" or "keyboard random characters". Incidentally, it's favourite character to type is the number "8".

The closest thing I came to a solution was someone suggesting that somewhere deep within the PC virtual keys are getting stuck...the PC thinks I'm holding down the "8" key for example. Sadly I couldn't verify this and have no idea how to solve it!

The PC in question is rather *ahem* "basic... Read more

It almost sounds like your Accessibility onscreen keyboard has been messed with. Or specfic hotkeys have been allocated to do something and have gone awry. It's an issue within the PC and you might have to suggest a repair to the particular system to right the problem. Jazz

Lately, when I use Mozilla Firefox I occasionally see what appears to be Japaneses, Chinese, and/or Korean characters above the url address box. Once they appear, I cannot make them go away except to close the browser.

Has anyone else noticed this? Should I be concerned? It only happens with Firefox. Does not happen with IE, Chrome, Opera, or Maxthon. It happens with different websites, not just one in particular.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Here's a really weird one, and I'm hoping someone has seen this before and can help. I'm using Win7 x64 on an Intel i7 and Gigabyte P55A-UD4P motherboard. I've got 8 GB RAM. My computer simply pastes 8 random characters at any given moment without prompting. I can open windows notepad and leave the cursor in it, and when I come back a few hours later I will find that the computer has re-pasted the same string of 8 random characters several times in succession with no one at the keyboard. It happens at totally random moments. It's like my computer has Turret's Syndrome and just has to blurt something profane without being asked. 6fd39f1b6fd39f1b That's it! It just happened while I was typing. A double blurt. As you can imagine, it hoses up anything I am doing at any given moment. It happened to me a few months ago, and I did a complete re-installation of everything, which worked. I had tried going back to an old archive of my disk using Acronis, but when I completed the restore function, the crap was still there. I just restored from the same fresh re-installation which I know was working properly using Acronis, and I still have it.Here are things I've tried without success:remove everything USBreplace the keyboard and mouserestore using an old, correctly working disk image from Acronis (tried twice)Spybot S&D, MalwareBytes Antimalware, etc.deep registry scrub (JV16 Powertools)I'm just stumped. Hello. I have an HP computer running XP Home that recently had the following message and wouldn't boot:

Windows could not start because of an error in the software.
Please report this problem as :
load needed dlls for kernel.
Please contact your support person to report this problem

I ran HP Recovery which resolved that error... but now I have another problem. During the recovery process there were several .DLL files that it said couldn't be recovered. Now when I boot I get the HP startup screen, then it goes to a black screen with about 10 random characters and figures which aren't even on the keybord, in the top left corner of the screen. It doesn't boot past this. However, if I press F10 during startup (which should be System Recovery) it doesn't give me the garbled letters and it boots normally. Has anyone come across something like this before? Thanks!

A:Random characters, windows won't boot

Hi Jools,

This should sort it out.

Run the System File Checker:
Click Start >> Run >> Type sfc /scannow (note space after sfc), then click OK.
You may be asked to insert your Windows disc.

If when you insert your disc, it auto starts, close it down so that you can see the command window.

The process may take quite a while, be patient and wait until you see a new line which should say "C:\Documents and Settings\****>

(**** being your name or computer name.)

Then reboot and let me know if this solved your problem.

It appears my Fujitsu laptop has been infected by a virus that starts typing characters (into emails, documents, search and website areas), and rapidly scrolls through my emails, preventing me from selecting one. It also periodically copies deleted files and adds them back to my laptop. I have run Malware, CA and Superantivirus programs (quick and complete scan) and they haven't detected anything. I've rebooted a zillion times, and for now everything seems ok, and I'm able to type without interruption but it pops up again. Please direct me. Thanks

A:Random characters, computer doesn't boot

Here's a bump, if needed.

What does HP say about the symptoms? What you relate as the response to F10 from the spash screen does not resemble the expected challenges asking to confirm your intentions to access the recovery partition. Yet you conclude that it boots normally.

If you made a set of CDs for System Recovery (HP oem load), this may duplicate what you termed HP Recovery. One of the options may be to restore the Recovery Partition.

Any of this deletes user files & applications.

You could pursue this as a virus/malware attack, but I doubt that it is worth the effort.

I accidentally destroyed the partition on my XP drive the other day and after trying a bunch of recovery tools one finally worked. I can see all the data on it but I cant boot off of it. The program claims to have fixed the boot sectors and I tried running fixboot and fixmbr on the XP recovery console but all I get at boot is a screen full of multicoloured random characters some of which are flashing. I have no idea what this means and I've never seen it before with destroyed drives in the past. I'm currently running from a different drive on the same computer so it's not a video card problem or anything like that.
My question is, is there any way I can get it to boot or will I just have to start from a fresh XP install and copy all my data from it?

A:Random characters on boot after partition recovery

After running the fixboot and fixmbr on it once again just for the sake of it and unplugging my other drives it now boots to the log on screen but the XP logo stays in the middle and the user names never show up. I do have mouse control though so it hasn't locked up. Does anybody know what this means? As far as I can tell from running a few things on it, all the data is fine.

Hello everyone, first off i would just like to say hi, seeing as this is my first post.

Recently my brothers PC has started to develop a problem during gameplay, the screen will freeze then either restart or return to normal after a few minutes, then repeat.

I managed to work it down to the graphic card driver (nv4_disp) being the problem (did a search and found some interesting threads, but didn't solve my problem). This driver also caused random "0" characters and other characters on the BOOT screen.

After uninstalling the driver and using an older one the characters went, but it only lasted for a few hours, if that.

Anyways, i then decided to re-format the hard drive but it will not let me. I used the repair screen which allowed me to enter the "format c:" then asked for confirmation which i put "Y" and then nothing happened. I also tried deleting the partition using the XP CD but that didn't let me either, it said something like, "Unable to delete, important files used in setup are in this partition".

So i am stuck, could it be the gfx card packing up, the driver that is causing it all, BIOS problem or hard drive problem?

It has never happened before.

Asus P4S800 mobo 10.09 BIOS
2.4ghz Prescott Intel P4
1gig of RAM (not too sure on make)
XFX GeForce 6600 256mb gfx card

* I hope you can get through all that info. I look forward to your replies.

Hi Liam,

The newer the video card, the newer the driver. And far too often, people will update their drivers unnecessarily because the latest update simply adds support for something you don't even have (like Vista). Here, the old axiom: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies.

Reformatting your drive and reinstalling Windows should be your absolute last resort. But if your configuration becomes so hopelessly trashed that it becomes easier just to start from scratch rather than fix it, then do it. But be sure you have all your drivers and config info either saved or written down someplace first before you do. Remember you probably won't be able to get online to download a necessary driver right after you format/reinstall Windows.

You didn't specify your exact steps, but unless you have a FULL version of Windows on CD, you can't just format your drive and reinstall it. If you have the Windows UPGRADE cd, you must have an earlier version of Windows installed first before you can install a new one. (I remember that the old Windows95 upgrade could be reinstalled simply by creating a folder called "Windows" from DOS and putting a file in it called "win.exe". Dunno if this same trick s... This annoying problem, thankfully, only occurs occasionally. While rushing through typing a document in Writer, I must do something wrong without realising it. Suddenly the Capitals lock comes on, and I cannot get it off. In order to get lower case letters, I have to put put on Capitals Lock, and vice versa. The only way I can cure it is by doing a restart, and that is such a nuisance. Any suggestions? Allan

I have an Asus Eee 1015PEM running Windows 8. Today the keyboard started switching (or not typing) certain letters.
For instance, in the middle row: a=2, s=4, d=e, f=(nothing), g=t, h=(nothing), j=(nothing), l=l
It doesn't seem to be an issue with NumLK (I've tried every permutation of Fn + NumLK with Alt/Ctrl/Shift....and those aren't the substitutions that would have been seen with NumLK).
I do not have Comcast Constant Guard installed.
I've restarted, and I have the same issue.
Any thoughts?

Many thanks!

From time to time (not every reboot or even every day) I get random entries into my registries like this:

These are the only three I have now, sometimes I have over ten. They are empty keys but I cannot figure out where they are coming from. I have ran a full virus scan multiple times and it never found anything.

Any clues and how to find out what is causing this. I would run ProcMon from system internals but since it an infrequent occurrence I don't want to run in it all day and bog my system down.

My computer runs Win7x64 Home.

The only possibility I can think of is SOMETHING is trying to create a key or set of keys using non-standard or non-latin characters (like chinese or arabic). Beyond that, I'm still unsure.

Honestly, I would run Registry Prot AND ProcMon and just let it go. Watch for those keys to pop up again. After an incident is recorded, look at ProcMon's logs to see what happens at that timestamp.

I just pulled that one out of my ass and made it up as I went along. It's really all I can think of.

Hi everyone,

I've had a Word meltdown. When I go to open files that I normally open all the time without problems, I'm presented with a "File Conversion" dialog box, which asks me to "select the encoding which makes my document readable".

Nothing that I select works. I just get a page full of random characters, instead of the document I normally do.

I'm panicking somewhat, as these document are part of my university work - they're essential!

Thanks to anyone for your help in advance.

Hi there,

Yesterday my machine suddenly restarted itself after no apparent fault, and since then from POST I get random lines/characters all over the screen.
Everything sounds as normal, no unusual beeps or sounds.

At the windows boot stage, none of the options to load Windows work, it just eventually progresses to the stop message;

Stop "0x000000EA (0x89c07908. 0x88e054a8, 0xbacf3cbc, 0x00000001)"

I presume something needs replacing, (I'm thinking the Motherboard) and I'd just like some confirmation from anybody who's experienced something similar before I go out and buy the wrong thing.

Hi-Power Black 800W 14cm Blue LED Fan PSU
Asus P5Q PRO P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

The machine was upgraded about 6 months ago, so the kit isn't exactly ancient

Of course I would be very graetful of any help on the issue.

Hi guys, I have the following pc issue:

I have a Dell Desktop pc and Vista Home premium edition, and yesterday my pc randomly shut off (I hadn't changed any settings or installed anything new as far as I'm aware). When it restarted, the bootup screens contain random characters and some missing characters. And when loading Vista, it will go to the loading screen bar (which is now yellow instead of green for some reason!) and then I just get a black screen with no cursor. However, it will load in safe mode and although it works fine in safe mode, there are also random blue/yellow squares on the screen (not sure if that is usual for safe mode).

I have tried putting in the Vista DVD and doing startup repair, doing a system restore, and also uninstalling/reinstalling the nvidia driver, but no luck. Can anyone recommend anything else to try? I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

A:Random/missing characters on boot up and PC only works in safe mode

This is most likely a video problem. Try checking the cables first, then check the monitor (by trying another one).

Unplug the system from the wall and check inside of the case to see if the fan on the video card is free of dust/debris (if it's an onboard video card you won't be able to do this). Then plug it in and see if the fan on the video card is working. DO NOT stick your fingers inside the case when it is powered on!!! This can damage the components - to include damaging YOU!!! Also try a house fan blowing into the case to see if that helps any.

Beyond that, try another video card (DO NOT buy another one unless you can return it for a refund).

Ok so my new bfg nforce4 mobo is installed in my comp. I formated my partition and reinstalled xp. But I'm getting intermitent graphic issues. When I first boot up I get Short horizontal green lines running in vertical rows up and down the screen. Plus most dashes in my text with the occasional number or letter and space. Then windows starts and I get blue cuts horizontally across the screen. This doesn't happen ALL the time. It seems to occur when I install new software that is related to video. I installed a new game demo and it happend. It also happend when I installed the video drivers and a few other programs. It seems to be fixed when I pull out the video card and put it back in. Oh and after I installed the most recent program that caused this I was getting a no keyboard error for the first few reboots.

I have absolutely zero idea what this could be. The video card is new from BFG who sent it to me back when I thought my bad mobo was caused by my video card.

Anyone have any suggestions on this. I could really use help on this one.

I checked my Device Manager and I've got a nice little "!" that says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" Dunno what the means exactly in relation to my problem, though maybe someone else does?

Another thing...I installed an old PCI card and the comp booted up fine no problems at all. But the card I'm trying to get to work is a PCI-E card so even though it sounds like it could be the card it could still also be something else right? I just recently RMA'd the video card even though it didn't need it (long story: my mobo was the problem, which is why I got a new one) and it took them over two months and 3 cards before they were able to mail me back the right formatted card, so I loath to send this one in again.

I have not been one to ask for help to get my PC out of trouble and I am new to this forum. I have built a handful or two of PC's over the years. I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop which started having random video issues such as (video traces and random pixel change) then I noticed random characters flickering or appearing on the text in my BIOS (even with my harddrive removed).

I am not completely familiar with character mapping and if this could be a VIDEO CARD issue, but I suspected it was a BIOS VIRUS. SInce I could not flash the BIOS without having Power connected AND a good battery in the unit, I shelled out 100.00 bucks to buy a new battery. I flashed the BIOS to the latest ver but I am still having the same problem. I have seen video failures before but not like this. I performed a bootscan with AVAST afterwords but no dice. As far as I know the only hardware "virus's can effect" are the HD and BIOS?
Once again while I am looking at a page in the BIOS, I see letters being replaced by other characters and the longer I am on that page it becomes unreadable. (Sounds like a Virus to me)
OR could it just be I need to replace the VIDEO card?

It also oddly didn't have the Google, Inc. tag under the software vendor column. "cannot find http://<random characters>make sure the path or internet address is correct"

1) Internet Explorer will often not open if it or a shortcut are double clicked.
It is seen in task manager, trying again results in another iexplore.exe showing up in task manager.
Ending task on it and retrying a few times will usually get it to open.

2) If it does open, clicking a link will usually result in the "cannot find http://<random characters>" error.
Manually typing links in the address bar works fine.
I'm pretty sure I had the "cannot find" error in safemode as well, I can check that again if anyone needs me to.

Three days ago my water cooling failed (got up to 77C while gaming is when I noticed the problem as my CPU should not go over 62C). I decided to install an aftermarket heatsink instead of a new water cooling system ,and add a few more fans just to make sure my whole motherboard was getting plenty of air flow. I installed a Cool Mater Hyper Plus 212 heatsink. I followed the instructions, and looked at a few installation videos on my phone just to be sure. I'm pretty positive everything was done correctly including the thermal paste as my system has not gone over 45C while gaming even playing games on Ultra settings.

I got one BSOD late last night, after about 6 hours of it being on but no other problems after that. Today however I have been having BSOD issues the entire time at random times from just 5 minutes up to 2 and a half hours between BSODs. They have ranged from: NTSF_FILE_SYSTEM, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, and SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

I have researched the errors on google all day and tried fixes for each one such as running memory diagnostic tool, deleting the old page info from memory and creating a new one, deleted all of my video drivers and reinstalled them, and I've even opened my case to make sure all my memory and cards are plugged in all the way.

A:Different Characters in VB

Either of these methods will achieve the result.

Open "TEST.TXT" For Output As #1
Print #1, "bind F1 ""+def;buyprime"""
Print #1, "bind F1 " & Chr(34) & "+def;buyprime" & Chr(34)
Close #1

Chr(34) is the " character, likewise using two together "" will output one of them to the file.

Hello everyone,

I'm stuck with a very frustrating BSOD problem and from the look of it, it seems like some kind of harware failure. Thing is, I've replaced almost everything but the BSODs refuse to go.

The BSODs are completely random but playing a current generation game (Arkham Asylum, GRID) would guarantee a crash within an hour. Mass Effect, though, runs for many hours at a stretch sometimes...
Analyzing my dumps told me that the crashes were totally random. Page faults, the irq_not_less_than_equal one, the driver_irq_not_less_than_equal one, and the bugcheck codes were pretty random too! Even the faulting processes were anything from ntoskrnl to npfs to my ati driver... just about anything!

I like fixing my own problems, plus I'm impatient. My temperatures were within limits, so I assumed it was the RAM and got myself 2 new corsair 2GB chips just to be sure.
But the BSODs continued...

So it's not the RAM; the motherboard, Graphic card, and the PSU are brand new anyway. The only thing left was the processor, but they almost never go bad... or so I thought.

The real clue was when one of the dumps was found to be corrupt by the debugger! Reading up on that told me that it could be a processor issue. So I borrowed a Xeon 3040 from a friend to test.

Well guess what... The BSODs have almost gone. At least I can work in peace now though the Xeon is painfully slow. I say 'almost' because I DID get one BSOD since I put the Xeon abo... Read more

A:Random BSODs with random errors/bugchecks in random processes

Your dumps came up with errors 0x8E / 0xD1 / 0xA etc. each dump citing different / random process being responsible for instance in question.

Such errors do and can occur due to mismatch RAM timings or incorrect voltage settings. I'll advise you to check specs of your (i.e. timings + voltage) and see whether settings in BIOS are correctly matching these.

Secondly, sometimes even the settings are matching you may still need to fiddle around with voltage settings (incrementally) and see whether that stabilize the system.

Lastly, do stress test your graphic card with OCCT, because one of the dumps came up with 0xc5 as 1st argument, which usually happen due to acceleration issues of graphics. Regards

Ok now i'm out of solution so i come here hoping that someone could help me
I always had bsod hapening randomly but not like the this week
I got 2 bsod/day when i'm playing, when i'm staring at my monitor or even when i'm sleeping with random error code like 0x1e, 0x24, 0x3b, 0x4a or 0xa
I read a lot of forum like this one of people having similar problem and most of the time people were talking about testing the ram so I ran mdsched.exe last night but no error has been found
They also talk about using the windows debuging tool so I tried to download it but even the debuger downloader is buged!

So if someone could help me find out what's the problem that would be great

ps: No need to ask i already uploaded the minidumps of the this week here:

Pay close attention to part 3 of the tutorial "If you have errors"
Test the RAM with Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

When done with the testing procedure take a picture and upload it here.

Hi, there:
I have Windows XP in my PC. It has been working fine, but last week, suddenly I lost 2 characters from my keystrokes.
I have my keyboard configured for Spanish/Costa Rica 101/102 keys, but now I can't use the characters ^ and ` when I type them.
They are supposed to work when I hit "Alt Gr" plus the { or } keys, I mean:
Alt Gr + { = ^
Alt Gr + ] = `
In the other hand, I can actually use the characters and ~, which work with Alt Gr too.
How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

When I first got my new machine it asked as part of all the setup for a computer name/description for network purposes. As the brand was PC specialist I just called it Wayne-Specialist. But of course in networks only max of 15 characters is supported so I quite often see the computer referred to as Wayne-specialis whereby it drops the last letter. So if I go into network and see the list of all the devices my machine is referred to in this shortened name. It's not a problem and I haven't seen any side effects as yet. But are there any issues by having it like this? IE, the longer name and then the shortened name? Should I be looking to rename it to something shorter so the names match? If there is no problem keeping as it is I will leave it alone as it would save hassle of changing our apps in things like our iOS devices whereby they can browse shared folders on my machine. It is interesting that my iOS apps all see the computer by its full 'Wayne-specialist' name rather than 'Wayne-specialis'

It just happened and I am not sure what I did, but it does this to all task bar, start button, program listings, Internet explorer, all windows apps. It's basically unuseable. I don't want to rebuild this computer. This happens in safe mode as well! So I can't read the items in control panel or device manager to select options there. Even the right click options on this page are the same.

The last thing I did was turn off some startup options in SYs mechanic 4. That is all I can remember doing out of the ordinary.

I went into a command window and found sys mechanic 4 , ran it, and turned those startups back on, but no change.

I created a new user, but the same thing happens.

Microsoft Word has only two choices besides Times new Roman for font listing, and the are both scrambled.

I am rnning a scan with McAfee, but I'm sending this before something else happens.

Outlook gives an error which I can't read, of course) , but if I say, don't report it, then it lets me into the mail, IN which only the folder list is scrambled. So I will be able to read your mail

I give up.

Thanks a load for everyone who probably knows about this..

I have a Windows XP, which can read Japanese characters but not write, so I looked for an IME. I found one from Microsoft, but it requires Office XP, which I'm really not a fan of (since I use Is there another way? (I think it also applies to any other language IME.)

A:Japanese Characters!

Did you check to see if there are any available for OO.o?
