go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis
Press 'Config'
Press 'Misc Tools'
Press 'Open Uninstall Manager'
Press 'Save List'
Save the log to a convenient location
Copy the log and post its contents in this thread

Good day all,

I'm having some issues getting a combobox to work with a memo field.

Master repository (table) = my data warehouse
Main (form) = drives data to Master Repository
Verbiage (table) = document types list in combobox on form Main. One of the 3 fields retrieved by the combobox, [Body], is a Memo field containing formatted wording to be used to generate a printed letter.

Issue:
The combobox will return the correct field/data upon selection but it truncates the information in that field. I read that there might be some sorting and like field issues but I haven't been able to fix or work around the issue yet. Suggestions are greatly appreciated

Perhaps there might be other ways to achieve what it is that I would like to do. What I am trying to do is create the ability to generate a formatted letter hub of sorts. These are one-off letters that are produced at the time of data entry that will use information from the current record and from several tables.

Thanks

A:Memo field

How many Characters are you trying to display in the Combo from the memo field?
There is a 255 character limit for the columns of Combjo box fields.
You can however display those characters but then use the whole of the table field's data by using VBA code to retrieve the data either using dlookup or a recordset.
Or if the user needs to see all the data you can use an unbound memo field to display the same data in full.

I started my computer up the other day and received the following message:

"Mortician's Memo (in the blue title bar on the box)
It looks like somehow the DSP is Dead! Please go to the Device Manager and Disable/Enable the Audio Device."

Then the screen remained blank when I closed that box. The desktop didn't load up and I had to hit the power switch on the outlet strip. Ever since I've been getting oodles of pop-ups and I've ran AVG and found three or four viruses. I've ran Ad-aware and Spybot, as well as Spyware. It keeps freezing up on me.
Anyone know what that message above is about?

Retaining formatting in memo fields (reports)

I am being passed an MDB file from a back end system that uses SQL server to store information. The conversion of SQL-server to MDB seems to work well except when I encounter a memo or text field containing what I believe to be CR/LF characters.

Many of the fields in the database are Memo fields and hold 'verbal' responses that will comprise of up to 2000 characters.

The problem that i am having is that the memo fields seem to be substituting carriage return/linefeed for a strange square character and when I use the memo field in a report I lose all formatting of the input data.

The result is something along the lines of

Original
This is a list of data items

Item one
Item two
Item three

When I include the memo field in the report I get something along the lines of

This is a list of data items[][]Item one[]Item two[]Item three[]

The [] indicate the square I actually see in the text.

How can I convert the square character back to a CR/LF ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Andy

I have a corrupt FPT file that I cannot repair. The DBF that is associated with it has 52 records of information. Ive pin-pointed where the corrupted fields are. I have a memo field with the name mplacement. There are exactly 4 so called corrupted records in the mplacement field. The corruption starts at record 18. Records 18 21 seem to be the corrupted ones. Records 1 17 seem to display information correctly. When I export the information from this DBF into an XLS, it only goes to record 17 and then quits, leaving the rest of the records out. When I open the FPT with a Hex Editor, the data displayed ends with record 17, like there is no more data.

Here?s the tricky part. When I open the application and go into 4 records (other than the 4 corrupted ones) and enter data into that mplacement memo field, it magically fixes the FPT and I dont get the Error 41, Memo file is missing or invalid anymore. When I open the FPT back up in a Hex Editor, it shows me records 1 17 and my newly added data for the 4 entries at the bottom. I still can?t seem to recover all of the data from the memo field from records 18 52. Ive got backups (at the time of corruption) of the DBF and FPT so I can try anything. Any help is much appreciated.

Hello All,
I am having trouble identifying how to solve my access problem. I have a table that stores data in two columns. One is a code(number) and another is the description for that code(memo). Currently the code column is being used as the data for a combo on a another table using a lookup on a textbox. On the form that this drop down appears on I need to have the description display for the particular code selected in the combo box. Is there an easy way to do this? I could do a lot of if statements but that seems unnecessary.
Thanks,

So as you can tell from the post count I'm new here. But from some of the threads i have seen already thought id bring my problem to you guys. A couple of days ago my physical memory just jumped up out of no where. It used to idle around 10% when i wasn't doing anything, but now its around 35%. Doing every day tasks i don't notice it too much but when i play games i do. And to make things worse along with this problem when i play this game, Smite, my pc often like to just shut off. I don't mean shut down... just power down. Its a lap top. I don't know much about computers, still learning. But from what i have read the shutting down thing seems to come from something overheating? It has only happened while playing video games.

I previously saw this thread, 'sluggish pc, high-physical memory, svchost', and took some advice from it. Such as running cleanmgr.exe, deleting temp files (from start search - %temp%), ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, ran SUPERAntiSpyware 5.0.0.1134, as well as turning off several things under the startup tab in msconfig

Other then that the only other thing i have done, i thought it was my video card at first. And i went to the NVIDIA Control Panel from the 'Control Panel' and got the error "You're not currently using a display attached to a Nvdia GPU". But went to their wed site and downloaded new drivers and fixed that error.

In any case here is my info. Any advice or help would be great. ... Read more

I have deleted an important voice memo off my iPhone 3Gs which I had not previously backed up on itunes (stupid I know). I have downloaded iPhone explorer and found a file recordings.db could this be my missing file and how do I listen to it. So far I can't open it at all. Is there any other way to get my memo back?

A:Deleted voice memo

That .db file is a SQLite database, which you can edit and view using free tools. Download one of those tools—the SQLite Database Browser—and install it on your computer. Open up the sms.db file, and click on the Browse Data tab.

I don't think this contains sound files from what I have read. It looks like all the .db file will tell you is the numbers that were called, etc.

I think you are in trouble because you have deleted them without a backup. If you had backed them up they are stored here via sync :
My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Voice Memos

Since that is not the case you might try looking in this directory using Iphone explorer.

I am new to windows 8 - i got a new laptop with it so it wasn't my chocie
Among many things, there is one thing that makes me cry. Lack of those sticky notepads on the desktop. I always had them in windows 7 and I really miss them and I can't find anything like that for Windows 8.
I downloaded several apps for that from windowsstore but they don't allow you to 'stick' them on normal desktop. They work only on that weird desktop and you have to enter the app to see your notes. Not very usefull.
So I was wondring if anyone here can help me with that
Is there any way you can have a sticky notes on normal screen, just like in windows 7 ?

A:sticky memo note pads

exactly what do you use the sticky notes for? there are many to do apps in the Windows Store. as well as more traditional sticky type notes. for many of the apps, you can pin the stickies to the start screen. you don't have to launch the app to see the notes.

for a to-do list, I have a very basic one called to-dos. it's very small and light but it let's you see your to-dos from the start screen without opening the app.
there are lots of them out there but this one does what I need so I just kind of stuck by it even though it is very plain.

for sticky note type apps:

I like Sticky Tiles. You can have either a small tile or a full size tile for your sticky. It lets you do multiple colors as well as multiple styles. And the pins look great on the start screen. The only negative I saw was that once you choose your sticky's size, you can't later change it. You can only choose the size of the sticky at the creation of the note.

Memo Stick is pretty good. it has a cork board screen to pin multiple stickies of different colors. and then you can also pin these stickies to the start screen. not only does it let you pin individual stickies, but its main app is a live tile that'll rotate through your stickies. the only negative is the font for the pinned stickies on the start screen can be too small depending on the resolution of the screen.

there's task which has a single screen that looks like a cork board where you pin stickies to. but there's no start screen stick... Read more

In DOS-based Alpha 4, a database I've been using for years, text fields were limited to about 250 characters, but a memo field, stored separately from the rest of the record, if I understood this, was possible with far more space.  In migrating via Excel from Alpha 4 to Access, I seem to have lost the contents of the Memo field.  Does anyone know the filename where such fields were stored, perhaps dependent on the original table name to which they apply?  I do not think there were any such files with the .dbf extension, which constitute tables typical for databases.  I imported all files with that extension, and there were only 2, the 2nd a set of "child" records related to the first.  Any hints on where to look and how to re-attach this information would be appreciated.  I'm presuming some key field in common, of course, but don't know which of the many files in the old collection of such (that orchestrated all the database functions) is the one to try to import into, perhaps first, Excel, and then into Access.  Thanks for any help offered. (One thing I'll be trying, not done yet, is to just look for large files, regardless of extension, and snoop to see if I can tell what they contain.)

I am currently using Microsoft Access 2002. I wanted to know if there was a way for me to append an entire column from a table into a single memo field.

I am trying to make a distribution list memo field in an access table. I wanted to grab an "email address" column to upload into this memo field. I could reference the memo field later on when I send emails from Access.

Is there any way to do this?

A:Microsoft Access - Appending Table To Memo Field

First, you don't really give enough info: is this a one time append or is this for continuing functionality in a form?

If it is the latter, what you would probably need to to is create a list box that populates all the email addresses in your database. Then, based on which items in the box you chose, you could loop through, using vba, and create a string value. Once you have the string with the email addresses, you would commit that to your memo field.

Hope this helps,

MBN

Ok - I've searched the forums, but cant find a similar problem and answer.
Program: Access 2000
OS: WinXP Pro SP1

I've got a database, and one of the tables is a supplement report table. The fields are:
SuppID / Autonumber Long Integer / (Primary Key)
OCA / Text field / (Case number)
SuppDate / Date/Time / (date supplement entered)
SuppInfo / Memo / (memo field for entering the text)

This table is associated to my main database by the OCA field, which is working fine in the querys, and bringing the information up in the reports. The problem is that when I enter about 1 full page of text in the memo field, and then print it in the report - the last few lines are not printed out.
I tried breaking the full text down in its paragraphs and making them in several entries under that OCA. That works fine again in the report, except even though the amount of text in the SuppInfo fields are less for each record in that table, the report still will not print the last few lines out.
I thought that maybe I had reached the character limit in the memo field originally, but when I broke it down, it still cuts it off.
Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated !

Thank you,
John R.

A:Solved: Urgent - Access2k memo field not completely printing

The problem in a report is that you are by default limited to the size of the box that you create in the report. The good news is that you can change this. Go into the report in design view and go into the properties of the note control. Under the format tab change the "Can Grow" option to yes. You may have to play with your report a little to make this look good. Keep in mind that the growth is always down and not horizontal.

Hi,

I know this is probably a rather tiresome query, but I've surfed the net endlessly and not found a solution. I'm attempting to populate a memo box, which depends on user choice from a chain of combo boxes (unbound).

I'm creating a classroom planning/assessment database application (the new Learning Essentials for those involved in Australian Education). The system I'm creating, database-wise, is a little complicated (I am an absolute self-taught beginner, so please be kind and precise with your terminology, explaining where I should find the tools you mention). We have 7 "KLAs", which are each chosen with an "Assessable Element" (depending on the KLA) for each grade, which each act as an umbrella for a number of "Knowledge and Understandings" (each K & U has a descriptor of more than 255 characters. Under each "Knowledge and Understanding" is a dozen or so "Detailed Elements" (that the kids get assessed on). So I have the following hierarchy of tables:

KLA
Assessable Elements
Year (or Grade in America-speak)
Ways of Working (differing and dependent on previous choices)

Request any help possible,

- Involves MS Access 97 SR-1 and MS WORD 97 SR-1

-Report generated for records Containing many Memo-Type Fields.

Reports are fine when Printing from Access, However Using Publish It with MS WORD or Save As/Export... Commands prouduces an RTF file with many memo field values truncated (Records with larger amounts of Data)

There seems to be no set limits to number of Characters (256, 512, 1024)

I've tried using the free support Site (Knowledge Base) And have not found an Adequate Answer.

Thank You In Advance for Any Help.

For the past week or two I have noticed random graphics issues in World of Warcraft -- screen freezes for several seconds then flickers and then leaves artifacts on the screen and then eventually things like water areas turn black and it gets too annoying to play.  Close the game and open it again and it starts out good again but within a short time (maybe 5-10 minutes?) it starts all over again.  First thought it was the game as obviously they are going through lots of patching with the new expansion but have not found any mention of others with this issue in the forums so far. So I found that Lenovo had thier LSC tools and installed and ran the hardware scan --- turns out my GTX860M is failing the memory tests.  But the tool does not say WHY or in WHAT WAY --- just gives a code to send in to support but my laptop is a few months out of warranty apparently so I thought I would try here.  Worth a shot right? So the Final Result Code it gives is W16FL644X-GAAZC8. I have the most current drivers from Nvidia --- first I thought that was the problem because Lenovo's site only offers the drivers from July which are several releases back so I tried their available version but same issues so I re-updated to current. I have tried to find anything that can help me determine more about what causes it to fail the memory tests and what the likely solutions might be (outside of replacing) but with no luck for anything since Win10 has been out -... We have an MSI all-in-one PC with touchscreen. I'm hoping to find a software package to centralize the happenings in our home. I've done some searching, but I don't really know where to start.

We're hoping to find a software package that...
- Checks multiple accounts for new mail
- Present a memo board so we can leave each other short messages
- Track a calendar so we can all add and update appointments
- Warn of upcoming birthdays, chores that are due, garbage day, etc...
- When idle, show photos, a clock, alerts, etc.
- Shopping list
- Works with the touch screen for most functions
- Eventually will control the X10 or ZWave power controllers for lights, etc.

...basically, replacing the whiteboard on our fridge, the calander on the wall, the constant nagging the kids to do their chores, and the lack of communication between us when we set up appointments, etc.

Does anyone know of software that does this? How about some Google search terms that might find some results?

Thanks!

A:Looking for centralized Home software; Memo's, chore lists, calendar..

I doubt you will find a single software package that can do everything you are asking for.

A few questions you should answer:
You have a single "Home PC", not a "Home Server" with multiple client PC's, correct?
Do more than one person need to use this single PC at the same time?
Does everybody log in and use the same Windows user account?
Are there any restrictions for some users such as children, or does everybody have Administrator authority?
Are you looking for a free solution, or are you willing to pay $$$?
Are you willing and capable to put in whatever time and effort is needed to accomplish all this.
MS Office Outlook email client can do a lot of what you want, but it is not free.
Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird are free, but have fewer features and capability.
Some of this might be done with Windows security and permissions, depending on how you are using User accounts and storing data.

You may be able to find a Business or Individual in your area that specializes in Home Automation that can help you, but it will not be free.

I hope I'm wrong and someone knows of a package like you want, but I believe if such a software package exists, it would be well known and used by a LOT of people, including me.

Hope this helps,
David

I have a very annoying problem at the moment. About 4 days ago my PC suddenly turned as slow as water climbing stairs. After restarting my PC a dozen times without solving the problem, I decided to check the running processes whenever the PC went sluggish again. I found the problem the first time I did ctrl-alt-del and checked the running processes. It seemed a strange file called "book regs memo.exe" was taking in 99% of CPU. So I ended it's task, but within an half an hour it returned. I ran a virusscan and an adaware scan in safemode after I updated their definitions, but they didn't find the problem. After a search for the file, I found a file called "BOOK REGS MEMO.EXE-239DFB4D.pf" in Windows prefetch folder. I deleted the file but it returned. I want to solve this problem cause it's more annoying than my litle brother, but I can't so can anybody help me?
(btw my OS is Xp pro)

A:Book Regs Memo.exe Problem, Can't Find Or Delete File.

What anti-virus are you using? Since that and Ad-aware did not help, try performing a few more anti-spyware scans.Download and scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 in "SAFE MODE".(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware). Be sure to print out the AVG Anti-Spyware Install-Scan Instructions. Download and scan with SUPERAntiSypware Free for Home Usersalternate siteDouble-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe to install and use the default settings for installation.Run SUPERAntiSypware and update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Udates".When done, select "Scan for Harmful Software".There are three scanning options available. Choose "Perform Complete Scan" and click "Next".When done, a Scan Summary will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".Place a checkmark next to items you wish to remove/quarantine and Click "Next".A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". And yes, I did set the property to 'can grow' and 'can shrink'. I can't figure what the problem is. Even if I stretch the field out huge, it still is cut off when I view the report. And in one case, the same field prints fully when it is used on one report but on another similar report the same field is cut off. I can't see any differences between the two report settings.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to disable a memo that comes up every time I open up Word 2013. It says, "Welcome back, pick up where you left off." It is pretty annoying to see that every day.

I have researched it and found the instructions for disabling this memo in Windows 8, but I have Windows 7, and I can't find directions for Windows 7. Here are the Windows 8 directions:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/disable-pick-up-where-you-left-off-office

I can follow those instructions right up to the end, but there I see differences from what they say. They say, "Now uncheck the option 'Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object'."

But I see two options to check or uncheck, unlike the one option in their screen shot. In mine it has these two:

"Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" (this is checked)

"Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permissions from this object" (this is unchecked)

So the one they say should appear checked (and should be unchecked to disable the memo) is already unchecked, and one that they don't mention for Windows 8 is checked.

Should I uncheck the one that is checked? Would anything undesirable happen if I did this? Is there anything else I should do?

Thank you,

C

He does get random error messages (I haven't seen any yet). I'm not sure if that's detailed enough, but I appreciate any help. Thank you in advance!

I hate Vista, I hate Windows 7 so now I have to put out a large amount of money for them because all my XP Pro's (I have three licences), are no good anymore? Microsoft, I just hate you!!!!! Jerks.
Anyhow, that's not my problem at the moment. I have been able to send e-mail with my Outlook Express but not receive any. It just sits there and groans, silently, and does nothing but time out and quit. I called my server and we tried everything to find the reason, IT came to only one conclusion, its Outlook Express that has the problem and now that I hear there are no longer any updates for XP, that's probably what the problem is. I noticed a change when I downloaded and installed their last updates. Now what?
I am sure I am gong to hear something I don't want to hear, but I do have the Pk 3, is there anything else I need to update off their website before they yank it off too.
Oh, forgot to add, I can get my mail off Cox Mail so have to go there to get my mail. spankyjo54

The problem I am experiencing is that while the computer is idle with nothing running at all. The CPU usage would still be running at ranging from 20 percent to 50 percent. And yes the System Idle Process stays around 99 to 95. This is where I got lost. I have not been able to eliminate this problem. It makes my computer lag like I've never seen before. 5 blue screens of death in 2 days. And now whenever I start up my computer, it takes forever to log on and usually freezes for about 3 minutes. How can I change this and stop this from happening? And is there any way of knowing what caused the blue screens of death?

A:Oh this is just great.

Hello youthedog4

about the blue screen of death
Try going to advanced option
reboot the computer
as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press the Enter key.
Your system will attempt to restart normally, but when it crashes, it will not re-start. Instead, you will see a BSOD with error message.
Record the error message in full detail, and post in this thread.
or have you tried "Last known good configuration that worked"

Please let us know.

Well I am at my wit?s end.

I have an Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi laptop. Centrino Duo T2250 @ 1.73GHz. Windows XP Media Center SP2. Intel i945GM Northbridge. Intel 82801GHM Southbridge. 2GB DDR2 memory.

The laptop did not come with any O/S cd?s.

I use Norton Internet Security, Trend Micro Anti-Spyware and Windows Defender. I keep all programs updated. I have scheduled scans and I do manual scans as well; I have never had a virus or similar. I run Registry Mechanic about twice a month. I defragment every couple of months.

The laptop used to run wonderfully. It was very fast; it was sometimes faster than my HP desktop of about the same age with twice the RAM. Then the change. It was not a gradual change; it was sudden. From the time you push the power button to full desktop (including completing password screen) used to take around 30 seconds; it now takes almost 10 minutes. No, I am not exaggerating when I say 10 minutes. It boots so slowly and struggles so badly that even the Windows 4-note ?chime? at boot sounds broken up and takes much longer to play than it should. If you try to do something as simple as open a blank Word document or open My Documents folder or similar at any point in the first 10 minutes, it will open (hopefully) within a minute. There were no changes (hardware, software etc) to the laptop at or near the time of the change.

I appreciate the help you all have offered. I started to see an increase in spyware on this computer which I don't normally use until now, so I'm not sure on everything on here. This morning as I signed on, Norton informed me that I had the virus Bloodhound.Exploit.6 (exact name?) I searched Google for the virus and it seems I'm not the only one. The virus has symptoms of not being able to open "My Computer", "My Documents", "Control Panel" etc. without Windows Explorer shutting down on me. The people with the problem ran HiJackThis and apparently were relieved of the virus. So any help with the virus and any annoying adware issues would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

P.S. I can not get Half Life 2 to open or CounterStrike: Source. If this is from the virus can you let me know, thanks.

One more thing. I'd like to clean the whole Hard Drive up, so if it looks like there is a program that someone who HATES spyware and pop-ups would not use please add it to the list to delete. Once again, thank you for the help. You guys are a life saver.

A:Great site! Help for a new guy please?

Howdy, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download, then unzip to "C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.1. Then repost your log, either now, or after following the steps in the solution (if provided in this post). This version has features that might be more helpful in 'cleaning' up your system.

Well for me, I decided to nuke my XP install again and start from scratch. I reinstalled XP by choosing "delete existing windows installation (press L)". Then I installed all my software drivers and whatnot. After that, I went to windows update where I got that massive SP2 update (75meg download!), understandably big. So now there's this total revamp of the "security features" built in to XP. Currently I have Norton Internet Security installed along with Norton Antivirus. Since SP2 the windows firewall has gained more features and functionality, and behaves a lot more like any retail firewall, with pop ups asking whether you want to Block or Allow programs access to the internet or unknown connections inbound. NIS has served me well for a couple years now. NIS does all the firewall stuff and you can do some very detailed customizations on each program's access to the internet. It also does imo a very good job of filtering out ad banners and blocking pop ups. But since SP2 IE has gained popup blocking capabilities. So now windows covers the primary concerns that I dealth with using NIS.

The only advantage of NIS is its ability to actively filter out web banners and advertisements withing a web page. But its the pop up windows that are really annoying anyways which SP2 handles now. NIS takes up a good bit of system resources, and adds 5 or so processes to the tasklist.

So the final question: Is it in my best interest to lose NIS and let XP SP2 h... Read more

We are running XP and have windows popping up telling us that XP has found malware and viruses and that we need to purchase their software etc. We have an active internet connection but had someone buy us some software support from Office Max and after the tech tried a few things the computer now says when you click on a program to run it that "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item" I was able to download Hijack This and GMER but I am unable to run either one. The DDS and attach files were created but it looks like those should not be posted unless told to do so. Is anyone out there able to help me with this issue?

Thanks and Merry Christmas,

Or.. how about if MS asked you EVERY question required for the OS install PRIOR to clicking finalize in which you could walk away and come back to a completely booted desktop.

How about the ability to delete video clips as you go through them just as you would pictures? Or to rate them as you go through them?

How does virus Work?

A:The Great Virus

A Virus is a man-made program (small bits of programming code disguised as something else or buried in other codes) that causes an unexpected and usually undesirable event. A virus can replicate itself and is designed to automatically spread to other computer users. Viruses can be transmitted through email attachments, downloads or removable media such as CDs, DVDs, or USB drives. Depending on the maliciousness and skill of the virus creator, the damage caused by a virus will vary. Some viruses will spread its viral code into other programs, corrupt, modify or even erase files. Some viruses wreak their effect as soon as their code is executed while other viruses lie dormant until circumstances cause their code to be executed by the computer. Viruses are usually classified by various criteria to include origin, techniques, types of files they infect, where they hide, kind of damage they cause, etc.All about VirusesViruses 101To fully understand what a virus does, you need to understand there are many other types of malware and that they differ from each other.Glossary of Malware Related TermsMalware, viruses, what are they? by Tigzy, Developer of RogueKiller

Something is creating hundreds of .tmp files most(all?) in a folder called C:Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\. How do I tell what is making these files and how do I get it off my computer? Symantec Antivirus periodically pops up to tell me it's quarantining these huge lists of files that keep growing, which slows my computer quite a bit.

I personally believe Emsisoft is a great product, and I feel confident it offers a high degree of protection to my computers.  Nevertheless, I am becoming more and more annoyed at the frequency I must reboot my computers to allow Emsisoft to "update core components".  I currently have three computers running Emsisoft Security Suite, and three other computers running Kaspersky Internet Security.  No offence to Emsisoft, but when my licenses expire on those computers, they will all be switched to Kaspersky.  Both products, in my humble opinion, are equally capable of offering superior protection.  I honestly hope Emsisoft will eventually improve their update methods, but until that time, I honestly don't have the patience to deal with it.  End of rant!

A:Emsisoft is great - BUT

Are you using EAM or EIS? EIS usually requires more restarts because of the additional firewall module - that, and it cannot overwrite files that are in use. (I get more restarts than the average person, but I am not complaining)

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note: Please make sure that your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done.

My XP used to fly from page to page, application to application..but now the CPU usage is at 100% most of the time. I show that I have 44 processes running now. I don't believe that used to be a problem. I have scanned with Norton and AVG both show no virus problems. I ran CWShredder and Spybot, both came up clean. I can't even fax anymore! I would be glad to Hijack if it will help. There is no joy in slow computerville.

Thanks,

IF your having problems at times reading your screen, MS has a wonderful program built in to Windows XP, called "Clear Type". Just figured out how to make it work, sure does makes it alot easier on your eyes.

Read more

Last night I posted about numerous Trojans and Sys32 viruses. And, after reading other posts today was able to use your information and repair/delete most of them!

I am attaching my current Hijack log and (hopefully) the Malware log. Can someone take a minute to review and let me know if there is anything else I can do to speedup my system. Also, would it be best to use a different program than Norton Corp. for antivirus??

Bought a bigger hard drive, threw it in, tossed in Windows and my backups...I have no sound. Don't have the driver disc for the motherboard(it's an onboard sound setup--no Soundblasters for me, sadly), so I went to Asus's website and downloaded everything I could find. My device manager still has a question mark next to "other devices" and a question mark with an exclamation point under it where it says Multimedia Audio Controller.

Using an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard, Logitech Z-640 speakers...anyone know what driver I'm missing here? Thanks

A:Great, now no sound

You may have some sort of conflict. In the device manager, right click on Multimedia Audio Device. If theres a conflict, it will tell you there. If there isn't one, then you could try directing windows to your drivers manually. Click the Drivers tab, and then Update Drivers. From then, instead of letting Windows search, just type in the directory where those ASUS drivers are.

(I'm using Windows 2000. It might be a little different for XP, if thats what your using.)

My lcd on my laptop. I noticed just now that the left side is somewhat more tinted than the right side. What should I do? All I did yesterday was clean 2 fingerprints on the left side with scratch free cloth (that is used for eyeglasses), with a drop of water on it. Very damp.

Just great. I cant believe my computer is now ****ed cause of this. What a friggin joke. Serious I invest all this money into a laptop and now this? I should be hucking this crap into my drywall right about now.

Wanted opinions on a new P2P program, I used to use an old version of Grokster which was good, however the new 1.6 version is plagued with adware etc. from what I hear. Kazaa lite seemed a good option away from the adds however the website no longer seems to be running, simply Kazaa full is available.

Considered eDonkey and eMule but wanted to gather opinions from you all. Bittorrent seems to be popular, but is it good for music files etc? Appreciate your involvement...

A:HELP!! great fps, then bad frames

Almost sounds like an over heating problem.

Reguardless of what the temps say, or what the problem is, I usually suspect some piece of hardware as over heating if the following is true:

The problem is predictable to the extent that you always seems to encounter it within 5 to 15 minutes or so of using some particular app.

Rebooting helps for a moment but the problem comes back usually sooner than the first time.

A fresh boot after a few hours of the machine being powered down seems to give the problem more time before surfacing.

These are some of the indicators that something is over heating. Could be a cpu, gpu, psu, chipset, hdd etc.

I've seen problems like strange characters suddenly appearing across the screen. Jerky graphics during a game every 10 or 20 seconds. machine freezes during restart on POST screen.

The one thing these problems all had in common, besides being related to overheating, were that they all initially appeared to be something else. The strange characters were thought to be a faulty video card which actually turned out to be a dying cpu fan. the jerky graphics were thought to be a memory resident program interfering turned out to be a hot gpu, and the post freeze was thought to be a bad cpu turned out to be an incorrect jumper that set the core voltage too high on the cpu.

Just for kicks, try running a game or two with the side of your case open and see if the problem takes a bit longer to occur. Some hardware can get just enough more c... Read more

Gotta share this with you--if you don't already know about it:
http://www.magicjack.com/4/index.asp This is a very small piece of hardware, once configured correctly, will allow you to call anywhere in the US and Canada, I think--any time of the day or night. FOR FREE!!!
I had read about it in a computer magazine and forgot about it until just a few days ago. Paid $45 including shipping for it. Each year hereafter, the annual charge is only $20. I have just called several friends/family for FREE. Take it with you when you go away and it will work on ANY XP, or later, that is running a broadband connection and has a USB. A good find, I think and has a 30 day free trial.
