Dell computer won't stay on

Q: Dell computer won't stay on

having nothing better to do, i decided to take apart my computer and finally install a new hard drive i have kept for almost a year. so i decided to give myself a challenge and take the thing apart completely, taking almost all the things off of the motherboard and stripping the shell of everything except for the motherboard. i then used an air duster on everything, but as i dusted the geforce driver, some of the liquid inside sprayed on it but then quickly evaporated. i pieced all the pieces as they were(or so i think), and turned the computer on, but my monitor did not turn on at all. i unplugged the monitor, and it said it was searching for a signal(after i unplugged it from the computer.

i am not very experienced with computer hardware, and right now all i know is that it is a refurbished hp compaq desktop.

A: Dell computer won't stay on

That liquid is most likely duster propellant and it won't hurt anything. You probably didn't attach the front panel wires properly back to the motherboard and hopefully you didn't damage the motherboard with a static electricity discharge. Take the computer to a friend or someone that knows how to repair computers. If you have damaged something by doing all this yourself, chalk it up to experience

A:dell xps 400 123 lights stay lit

You can get some sense of what is wrong by interpreting the BIOS beeps. I could find no hits for "1 long, 3 short, 1 long beep", but there were several for "1 long, 3 short beeps".

What brand is your BIOS ? Different manufacturers have different codes. AMIBIOS and Phoenix I think are the only two...

EDIT ***

If your BIOS is Phoenix, and if the "1 long, 3 short, 1 long" code could be reinterpreted as "1 - 3 -1" (see link below), then your BIOS is pointing to a "RAM refresh verification failure" (whatever that is)...

I have a Dell desktop and a Dell laptop and a Linksys by Cisco Wireless-G broadband router. The linksys is connected to my RCN modem. The laptop will connect then disconnect to the internet. I have read through many here having similar problems but cannot figure out how to correct this issue. The laptop can find the wireless network connection and it says it is connected but it cannot stay connected to the internet for more than a minute or two.

I3-2100, 3.1, 3MB, SNB, 65W, Q0

one 4G DDR3

given to me as dead.

Powers up but would not boot up. Blank monitor. Cant get into Bios. It powers down by itself after seconds, tens of seconds, minutes, or tens of minutes.Tried this many times.

Moved ram to other slot and it booted to Bios and windows. If it stayed on that long. After a while it shut down again by itself. Tried this many times.

Swapped out HDD, power supply, and ram one by one with known good. Problem remains. That is it boots up, then powers down by itself after seconds, tens of seconds, minutes, or tens of minutes.Tried this many times.

When ever I plug in a power supply (tried several), it starts up for a few seconds, then powers down. Once it did not power down for several minutes. Once while looking at it, it powered up all by itself.

While powered up touching/wiggling the power button does nothing.

ideas? Im guessing the board is toast. Might the processor still be good? Will this processor fit into a optiplex 380?

tks,

I attempted to start up my dell this morning, and it's been a frustrating experience ever since. Each time I hit the power button, the power light and hard drive lights come on for only a couple of seconds, and then it shuts off completely. I have looked at other threads similar to this topic and have also tried some things I've read to no avail. I took the battery out and it still does the same thing when plugged directly into the wall. Your help or any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

A:My Dell Latitude D505 will not stay on

Usual cause is hard drive failure. How old is the drive. Second caus in that dell is memory failure. Others are too little, or dried out thermal past, failing modem (even if not in use), and plain ol dust, dirt, and hair plugging cooling channels.

I have a cousin that fixes electonics. From what I heard, he had a friend that had a dell inspiron 6000 that just stopped working. Well He gave it to my cousin. He couldn't fix it so he gave it to me. I went out and bought an extra mother board and fixed it. It runs perfectly! Well then I have this extra mother board laying around. So, I got another Dell inspiron 6000 without a motherboard. Basicly, I want to fix the other on now. But When ever I power it on it lights up for 5 seconds and shuts off. I do not have a hard drive in it, but when I did it didn't spin. If you put your ear up to it, you can hear a humming noise on every part of the board. Any suggestions as to what to Do? I don't want to go Searching for another costly Board.

:haha:
five seconds: type fast.
listen to very short songs.
play video games you know you will lose really quickly.

--but seriously: the mb sounds like toast. that may be why no one is posting any notes.

i cannot remember having te 5-second problem before. it could mean that some spot on the mb got broken or shorted out - not enuff to kill everything, but to keep it from decently being able to get BIOS rolling. Or, the BIOS is messed up.

I wouldn't even spend money replacing the bios. I would find another mb used or cheap somewher if you really wanted to take advantage of the remaining computer, supposing that everyting else is ok.

Hi, I just got a Dell Latitude C810 laptop from my friend and it doesnt have an OS right now. When i put the windows xp disc in the drive and go turn it on the light comes on and u can hear the computer working, but after 5-10 secs it will turn off with no picture on the screen. My buddy said it worked fine after he removed xp, just loaded to the grey screen and said it needed an OS. I was just wondering if anyone knew why this was happening. The battery is dead and doesnt seem to want to charge, the light is green and then flashes amber. Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,

I just bought a brand new Dell laptop (Inspiron 3520) with Windows 8 and it won't stay connected to the internet. It will be fine, but then after a while it will stop connecting and I have to reconnect. When it does this, sometimes it will say "limited connectivity" but usually it appears normal, even when I go in and disconnect and reconnect; usually the only reason I know there's a problem is because nothing will load. After I reconnect, everything resumes as normal until it disconnects again.

I know it isn't an issue with the modem or provider because it has done this on multiple connections in multiple places.

I have a Dell 1525 Inspiron laptop..i believe is about 3 years old. I got it as a hand-me-down from my BF's mother, who took excellent care of it. Ive only had it since February, but it has always run fine, until this past month. 3 times now it has done this to me. The first time, it was just after I unplugged it to take it to a friends house..then tried to power it up about 1/2 hour later and nothing...let it sit for 2 days or so, and then it was ok..now it has happened 2 more times..but these times, it froze up and wouldnt unfreeze..then when I got it powered down and tried to get it back up..nothing...the second time it again took a few days then it was ok..this last time it has been a week and nothing yet. This time, the only thing that is different is that the 3 lights to the left of the power button are blinking, the caps lock, numbers lock and scroll lock icons.. It powers up, then shuts down within 5 seconds or so...but the power light and the one fan keeps running...Ive been told multiple things so far..from a bad battery to bad power cord to bad connection in the lappy where the power cord connects.. I just dont understand why it powered up those 1st 2 times and it wont this time..unless it was just a fluke those times. I dont have alot of money to fix it, or replace things unless i know for sure what im buying is going to work. I dont want to lose whats on it either!! help!

My laptop fan comes on briefly, the power light also comes on green briefly, then shuts down. The power light continues to slowly blink until I press it for a second, then it too shuts off. If I hold it down for a few seconds, I can hear a faint click, and it resumes slowly flashing. But it won't start.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem. I did have the same problem a few weeks ago, and took it into a computer repair shop for repair. They gave it back to me, saying there was nothing wrong with it. And indeed it worked fine again: until this morning.

Would this have anything to do with the fact that I recently started shutting down the power to the transformer when it was turned off? My idea was to save on the electricity being used by the transformer when the computer was not being used. But now I'm thinking that wasn't such a good idea especially given that the transformer really doesn't use a great deal of power in the great scheme of things.

If anyone could help me get machine going again I would appreciate it. This machine is now about three or four years old and has given sterling service until now! I'm hoping I don't have to retire it yet!

All my best to the tech support guys on a very snowy March morning (here in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario it's pretty snowy anyway!)

I need help with my dell inspiron 1011. It's the Nickelodeon edition.

These are screenshots of the connections. I'm sorry, I'm not good at explaining what exactly I mean.
And I messed up, I didn't click, I just hovered over it. Sorry, got my words mixed up.

It's saying it's connected. And I AM for maybe 20 seconds then it stops. I know it's not the router because my friend/neighbor connected to it without a problem and my laptop worked on it perfectly 2 or so months ago. I've checked to make sure everything is up to date on it, and it is. It even says that the wireless card is working properly. We have a Belkin N 150 Wireless Router. But we used wired connections for everything except our laptop and the neighbors(by the way, she only just connected to it last night because we wanted to see if it was indeed the laptop or router and since hers worked, we think it's the laptop.) If you need any more information please let me know because I'm not sure what else to give you.

Hi, my dell E510 wont fully power up, when i turn it on the Dell screen pops up and loads up to about 90%, at which point it just freezes. My keyboard wont respond to anything. Ive trouble shooted it and after a while fiqured out that the front I/O board was bad (or at least thats what i thought). I just pluged in my usb wireless network card into one of the USB ports on the front and the computer powered up just fine. This worked a couple of times, but the problem came back. I decided to order a replacement front I/O board from dell, and when i received it i replaced it and it powered up fine the first time, but has not since.

I researched some more and tried to narrow the problem down and make sure it was the front I/O board. I did this by unplugging the computer, disconnecting the entire front I/O board, taking out the CMOS battery, and resetting the MB by using the CLR pins, reinserting the CMOS battery then plugging back in the power supply. The computer turned on by itself as it was supposed to, but the same problem existed (90% loaded on the DELL screen). This leads me to believe that the I/O board isnt bad, because if it was it should have powered up just fine, which doesnt make sense because when i mess with it sometimes it will work, but hasnt recently.

Everytime i try to power it up the front 1 and 4 led lights will turn green and stay green once the DELL load screen gets to 90%. Any Help is greatly appreciated.

I have a Inspiron 15R SE and i've already had this problem before:
The notebook stay at the Dell's logo.
To resolve this i followed that already known steps: Go to setup or boot Options, by F2 or F12, and..
But now, the pc stays on Dell's logo but press F2 or F12 doesnt do the pc Góes to setup or boot Options, it just appears the blue bar and continues like this..
What can i do?
Thank you.

A:Notebook doesnt turn on - stay at the Dell's logo

Start by unplugging the system, removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall both memory modules and try again on AC only (no battery).
If the system will POST on no battery, the battery is faulty and will need to be replaced.
If the system still won't POST, remove the hard drive.  If it'll then complete POST, the hard drive is bad and will need to be replaced.
If the system still won't power up, the mainboard is bad -- and as above, will need to be replaced.

2) My laptop for some reason is getting freeze at any situation. Last 2 weeks happened 3 times. One time happened in youtube and the other 2 in EDGE browser, and i couldnt move nothing. Neither the cursor.

A few months ago my husband started having issues with his computer, it started with the screen not coming on, he would turn the computer on but it wouldn't give a signal to the screen, mouse or keyboard and he would have to force restart numerous times in order to get it to come on.  Then he got a blue screen of death at one point, which escalated to the computer randomly shutting off(if I remember correctly he was usually playing minecraft when it shut off). After a while windows would no longer load, and he would get a screen with options for system restore, check for memory issues etc(can't remember the other options, but there were a few). He had tried to do a system restore but he wouldn't work, at that point he gave up. The other day(Wednesday) we lost power for a few hours and when the power came back on his computer started and I was able to successfully do a system restore back to 8/10(which was probably right before the computer stopped working. It was working fine until last night, it started shutting itself off again and when I try to do a system restore I get an error, which I will attach a pic of. I was able to get the computer started in safemode, but it still gave me the system restore error after it loaded. I have no idea if this is an issues with windows being corrupted, or if it's an issue with something else with his computer, or maybe a virus issue, so please move the topic if you feel it's not a windows issue. I just figured with the restore issue,... Read more

You can always do things to fix it, and some people might reply and tell you what things you can do, but I would just back up my files and reinstall windows fresh, formatting the drive in the process (which will destroy all your old files).

Hi all..

Before I pull out every last strand of hair... someone smarter than me, please come forward.

Thanks to the good advice here and the scan results, it seems that my problems may not be malware-related (right now).

The issues that I have been having are a little strange.. and seem to be connected to sound and touchpad now.

Volume settings won't stay in "up" position and I have no system startup sound anymore. Touchpad first started giving me errors that the advanced features were disabled because another device was in use, when it wasn't.

Touchpad cursor started jumping all over the place - had to plug in a mouse to do anything. I uninstalled, then reinstalled the touchpad and it works fine until I reboot.

Something from the last few days has wiped out all my System Restore points. So whatever it is, or was, that caused these changes has me puzzled. I've been dealing with this for 3 days straight and I've tried just about everything.

This is an older HP Pavilion laptop..zv6000 with AMD Athlon 64 processor, XP OS. A few episodes of freezing have happened today as well..or just "sticking" in one place for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng time.

Anyone who wishes to advise, I am ready to listen.

I would try to replace the CMOS battery with a new one, first.

http://www.zlectronic.com/product/NEW-CMOS-BIOS-BATTERY-FOR-HP-PAVILION-ZV6000-ZV6009EA.html , appears to be standard CMOS battery, CR2032, available anywhere batteries are sold.

http://www.fixya.com/support/t1855606-hp_pavilion_zv6000_laptop_cmos_battery

If problems continued, I would be thinking serious problems with motherboard.

Ok so when I plug it in to the wall the green light on the power supply turns on. The computer then turns itself on for 6 secs then shuts off. You can't turn it on again until you unplug the computer and wait til the green light on the power supply turns off. Then in order to turn it back on you have to plug it back in and the cycle starts all over again. All I can tell so far is that its not the cd rom drive, . Any help would be great.

A:Computer will not stay on

STEP 1:
Disconnect all internal cable.... Only the Power Supply Connect to MB with CPU and RAM... If boot Up OK then check one of device you disconnect before ... that device may cause the problem. if still same issue then will be MB / CPU / RAM / Power Supply

If is the MB / CPU / RAM / POWER SUPPLY
STEP 2: Take out the ram .. and start the computer ... normally it should give long beep..... if it don't give long beep and shut down .... will be the Power Supply or the MB..... if it give the long beep long enough over 15 second ....... then better check with the RAM...

STEP 3: if only left is The MB or CPU or the power supply.... We need another power supply to test or a power supply tester..... Also make sure the CPU is at good contact with the CPU FAN.... CPU Over heat will cause this kind of problem

Hi all!

I am about at wits end when it comes to this computer. I just built it like last week, and everything runs beautifully about it; that is, except that the dang thing won't stay turned off! I tell it to shutdown, and it turns itself back on after about two or three seconds. Let me clarify: the computer itself does NOT randomly shutdown, nor am I having problems with sleep or hibernate (haven't used them yet).

Ok, so I have tried about everything on every help forum I've read from here to knittingforums.com. I have disable all wake events, including the ones in regards to network adapters. I have disabled automatic restart, and even fooled around in the BIOS, disabling all wake events. I've even flipped around between BIOS commanded and OS commanded event wakes in the BIOS. About the only thing I can do is log off of my user account, and then do a hard shutdown. Even did the thing where you specifically set what the power button does.

So... please help! I will be most gracious, and will give any more information if necessary. The only thing I have NOT done is flash the BIOS; it won't recognize the USB device I have the updated drivers on.

A:Computer Won't Stay Off!

I will take you up on giving more information. Like filling in your system spec's in your user cp so we know what your system is to start with. Thank you and welcome to sevenforums. Fabe

Ok, my best friend has requested my help and I've been doing all I can to figure out the problem, but I can't find anything by searching on google. Alright, the problem is this. His computer has been completely turning off, freezing, or sometimes the keyboard doesn't even work. It's been needing to be turned off to be cooled lately too, but he does and it cools down and is fine. In fact, since he took Yahoo! messenger completely off his computer, it's been doing a lot better. In the past few days, his pc was working better than it had in a long while because the messenger was gone. The other morning, he woke up and couldn't get it to work, he'd been shut down completely. I guess he was fed up or something because he did a factory reboot, and now when he tries to turn it back on, he can stay on for five to fifteen minutes to tell me information about how to help him, but then it shuts off again and has to be unplugged to get to working. It does those loops where it will go to the log in screen and then back out to restart again, and that's why he has to unplug it. I told him that he should go and write down the BSOD error numbers the next time it happened and I got them, and they are:

You said after it cools down it's fine, have you opened up the case and blown out any dust with those canned air things? If he's over heating that could be part of it. Also check to see if all the fans are working, PSU, cpu, video card if there is one.

hey guys

So i got my new machine all built I connected everything up, I hit the power button, the heatsink/fan comes on, the computer starts whirring, and it look as though it is about to start up and then it switches off after a split-second.

I've double checked everything, I'm using an Antec truepower 550watt PSU

The configuration of my box :
Mobo :: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
CPU :: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Dual-Core
HD :: SATA WD 250GB
CD/RW/DVD/RW :: Plextor PX-755SA (SATA)
Video Card :: Asus GeForce 7600 GS 512mb
RAM :: Samsung Dual Channel DDR2 533 PC2-4200 (four 1GB chips = 4GB)

the green light on the mobo is on, i hit power she powers up fans spin then it just doesn't hold the power

what i have done so far to see whats wrong:

I checked the PSU with my other machine, i know the PSU works fine.

I made sure the mobo wasn't touching the case anywhere.

I took it all apart and checked connections, then just put one stick of RAM in and the video card, plugged the mouse and keyboard in and powered it up. same thing, it gets juice the fans roll then it just goes out, it won't hold power.

could it be the RAM?

A:Computer Won't Stay On

I don't think it would just shut off if it were ram. Did any pins or jumpers get bent or shorted?

I currently have a Dell Dimension 8100 - Intel Pentium (R) 4 CPU 1300 Mhz - 256 RAM.
It is moving slowly and showing the "flashlight" during opening certain programs. Microsoft Word may take up to 20 seconds to open a file. Running two programs together will really slow the works, etc. We have XP.

Should I add more memory and double it to 512? Would that help?

Should I buy a new computer such as an HP? I do basic things on the computer: web browsing, email, photography stuff and some minor game playing (Poppit). Any suggestions on a new computer hardware? Should I buy from Walmart or go to HP.com if the suggestion is to buy.

Thanks for your help.

My screen froze up and I tried to exit by ctrl, alt, del. That didn't work so I had to shut down manually. When I restarted the computer it made loud squeeking noises and then the fan was extremely loud. Again I had to shut down manually. The loud noise is gone, but when I try to start the computer it will go as far as the windows screen and shut down. It's a Dell Dimention 8400. I am computer challenged, so any layman terms will be appreciated.

I found out it was bad capacitors you can buy them at radio shack from 20-60 cents per capacitor so if you have the same prob them look at your capacitor if it look bubbled then you need a new capacitor.

Can you give us some more details?
What hardware do you have in your computer?
Did you build it or was it purchased?
How old is this computer?
Was it a short beep or a long beep or several beeps?

Hi;
My system is an Asus P5AD2E Premium mobo with 3G RAM, a BFG Nvidia 6800 250MB video and a RADI0 HDD array. The OS is Windows XP Pro with SP3

Recently, I switched from using a wireless network to a wired one, using the onboard port plugged into my D-Link DI624 router.
Suddenly, I have this problem: My computer will not stay off.
When I shut down normally, the system shuts off, but within about 5 seconds, it starts up again, booting normally.

I did some investigating, and found that if I have "Check LAN Cable on POST" (this may not be the exact wording of the option) option in the BIOS enabled, the problem does not occur.
This option had always been disabled, and I now recall that I had trouble before, perhaps when I first installed the DI624 router and had the computer connected via the same LAN port.

There is no server or any other computer that is issuing a wake-on-LAN command, so the power up is not a legitimate action.

The computer is connected to the DI624 via the onboard port, then the DI624 is connected via one of it's LAN ports to another router, a DI720U which is then connected to the cable modem.

I tried switching patch cables at one point, but it made no difference.
Also note that when looking at the LAN cable status in the BIOS, I see that pins 1-2 and 3-4 indicate "Normal" with no length specified.
Pins 5-6 and 7-8 indicate "Short" and a length of 4m, which is correct for the length of cable connected be... Read more

Please ensure that there is no dust inside the casing, if you haven't cleaned it in a while do so by using compressed air. Also check that all cables are correctly attached, and RAM is seated properly.

Im having lots of problems keeping my computer cool.
Here are my specs:
P4 3.0ghz
80gb HDD
1gig RAM
Ati Radeon 9600XT
Soundblaster Live! 24bit

In my case I have 2 fans on the back pulling out, one on the top pulling out and one on the side pushing in. All fans are 80mm

When im idle my System temp is around 40C, and CPU at 55C, but when I play games the System temp is at 44C and the CPU at 60C. This is too hot for me. Im looking for a solution that would cost me less than £50 if possible. Anyone recommend anything for me? Im thinking new case which has good airflow and some decent fans maybe? Please link me to any items if possible

Thanks

Beginning a few days ago, the computer would freeze for short intervals (20 seconds or so) while I was using it...and then go back to normal. Occasionally it would happen bad enough that the PC would crash and reboot itself. By yesterday this was happening much more frequently...and today, the PC will barely boot. It's VERY slow to boot...the 'freezes' are MUCH more frequent and longer...and in fact now I'm lucky if after a fresh boot I'm able to even open a program at all without the PC crashing first. I've even had it crash and reboot itself while still in the process of booting into windows (ie it hadn't even made it to the windows login screen before crashing).

I've already ruled out the system memory....I have 2 sticks of 512mb RAM installed, so I removed 1 stick and then took turns swapping to each one, yet the problem persisted. I once had a similar problem (PC would APPEAR to freeze, but not reboot) that turned out to be the graphics card, but this too seems unlikely as when I try to connect to the PC in question from another PC here on the home network, my Explorer from the other PC will literally just crash itself failing to connect to the troubled PC (and I doubt that would occur if it was a problem with the graphics card). I feel like I've ruled out everything expect what would be the worst case scenarios (dead/dying HD, mobo, processor) but I was hoping perhaps you guys had more ideas?

Thanks in advance...

Hello!
This is my first time here on the forums, and i have a question. Obviously.

I have a Dell 540s that i have had since 08 and it has never given me any real problems. Recently, however, it has started to blue screen and the message said something about how the bios will not work with the acpi. I forget exactly what it said. I ignored it for a while as it would only blue screen occasionally and i would rather play my games than try to fix it. lol. The problem has gotten worse and it is now to the point where i had to run startup repair because windows is failing to start. I tried the system restore option that it gave me during the repair and windows started, but soon after i got a blue screen that said PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. This blue screen was only available for precious seconds while i snapped a photo so i could actually see and comprehend what it said before it rebooted.

I booted from the cd and ran a memory test. I got to the third one down which is the WCMch Test and received a "memory compare error"

I then ran the full computer scan but nothing was wrong except i could not hear some of the audio it was playing.

Anyone have any idea as to what i can do to fix my computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

OK. Heres how it went. My old motherboard or processor was shot and i wasn't sure which one it was so i replaced both of them. I had a processor sitting around that was fairly decent and the mother board was brand spanking new. I bought 2 gbs f RAM for it and i had a awesome graphics card from teh old computer. So i gets my new Motherboard stick it in (got everything plugged in at this point. I boot it up and everything looks good. Saw my desktop which i hadn't seen in FOREVER and all these install new driver windows pop up and BAM! teh motherboard's cd wouldn't be recognized by the computer.( i was using a IDE/SATA adapter for it. CD drive works fine plugged it in with my hard drive and it can boot from cds now. And teh hard drive looks good. So i boot up again and BAM! it turns off. No error messages, no warnings nothin. So i thought "huh weird" and turns it on again shuts off again. My tech friend thought it was the power supply so i replaced my old 288w with a 580w. And boots it up again and it shuts off again. So here i am trying to figure out whats going on in my computer. And i really feel bad cus its been about two months since my gaming compy has worked so here i am begging y'all to help.
(If you need more specific info just post for it.)
Thanx, ~R

Did you clear the CMOS on the new MOBO (motherboard)?

Test the CPU under stress
Test the RAM under stress
Test the Video under stress
Test the HDD under stress
Test the MOBO under stress

There is free software that you can run in the pre-windows before Windows load. MemTest was one you can test the Memory. Sounds like one of your components is not functioning. If the PSU is new right. If everything checks out you should blow out the OS wipe the HDD then install a fresh copy as sometimes what had worked prior might not work with the new hardware. It should work. I had a system where it run 24/7 installed a new PSU. I would come back after 12 hours and the all system would be shutdown. The issue was the new 550watt Green PSU. Gone faulty!

I have not had this problem before. On my old Gateway everything was working fine until I turned it off one day. Now, to turn it on and to keep it running, I have to get inside the computer and unplug the Power SW wire then plug it in which makes the computer start and then I have to unplug it so that the computer continues to run. If I leave it plugged in, after 5 seconds the computer shuts down. This just started one day after turning off the computer. No changes were made to the computer other than adding RAM.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanx!

Hi nibared,

Welcome again to Vista Forums!

Please check out the following tutorial and see if it helps (it almost always does - though which method works varies from case to case): Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll try to see what else we can do to track down and eliminate the cause.

In the meantime, if your computer "takes forever to startup" (a different problem, but since you mentioned it I thought I'd address it), I recommend a little cleaning and maintenance as follows:

Here's my little blurb on improving space and speed in Vista systems (and it also suggests other things of value that you can consider or ignore - the choice is entirely yours). All of this is your choice, actually - I'm just presenting some options that may help and that have helped many others (and that I pretty much use myself though sometimes I do procrastinate I'm sad to admit and there are some things I won't do no matter how beneficial - for example, I refuse to delete my cookies (but that's a personal choice as I prefer the benefits of having them when going to previously-visited web sites over the limited amount of space recovered and speed gained given their small size)). Much of this should be part of normal maintenance, but that includes some other things (like creating periodic system restore points - probably at least weekly as they don't necessarily improve sp... Hi,This is a very nasty log... and some entries in your log suspect that you are dealing with the pe386 rootkit as well which causes the BSOD in normal mode everytime.Problem with this combination of infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show. Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution. So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused. Please perform next steps in the right order without missing any step.. I can't stress how important this is, because logs won't make sense afterwards.* Download Killbox.Click killbox.exe.Select the option "Delete on reboot".Click the button: All Files (!important!)Now it should flash green. Now copy the next bold part:C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dllC:\WINDOWS\system32\a3dxq.dllOpen 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboardThen press the button that looks like a red circle with ... At the end of last month I bought a new computer and for some reason it will not stay shut down.

I started the system on Vista, but switched to Windows 7 RC at a friend's recommendation and have the problem on both OS's.

To elucidate, when I go to Shut Down the computer turns itself off normally, then after perhaps 3 seconds the fans will kick back on, usually for a second or two, shut down, and then a couple seconds later will turn on again and the entire system will boot itself up.
Likewise, if I tell the computer to Sleep, it will go into Sleep mode, but the fans will kick on, run for a few seconds, switch off and stay off for a few seconds, then turn back on, turn back off, over and over and over again infinitely as far as I can tell until the power switch to the supply in the back is flicked. I cannot turn the computer back on from Sleep mode (with mouse, keyboard or power button on the tower), by the way, while it's doing that. I have to cut the power and turn it back on from there.

I have looked up this problem in many other forums and have seen solutions such as disabling all reboot effects in the BIOS (which I have done to no effect), unplugging all of the front tower buttons from the motherboard (no effect), and also wiping the hard drive in case of some sort of faulty installation?also, much to my chagrin, to no effect.

Hi,

I have a brand new Dell desktop (got it Friday) with Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1 on it. The problem I'm having is that I'm not able to shut the computer off.

I'm going to the start menu, using the right arrow to display the full list of options (sleep, change users, restart, etc) and selecting Shut Down. Vista goes through the normal routine (shutting down, please wait, etc). After a couple of seconds the fans and hard drives shut down in the CPU and my monitor goes into sleep mode because it's not getting a signal. HOWEVER, in another second or two, the fans and hard drives spin back up, just like I'd pressed the power button on the CPU and the PC boots back up!

It was happening before I applied SP1, so that should not be the problem. I can't say for sure that it has been happening from the very beginning, but I think it has been. The first few times it happened I thought that maybe I had put it in sleep mode by accident (I typically hit shut down and leave the room before it's done). I haven't had time to reinstall any of my software yet, so it is pretty much as delivered from Dell.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? And more importantly, does anyone have any suggestions on fixing it? Right now the only way I can shut off my PC is to catch it on the reboot and hold in the power button on the CPU until it powers off.

Thanks for your help!

A:Computer won't stay in standby

Hi joec999 and welcome to TSF.

There are definitely entries in that log that we can help you with, however we need to see everything that is running at startup. Please make sure to allow all programs to boot at startup and run the scan in Normal Mode.

You are running Hijack This from a temporary directory. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C:\ then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJT , or another name of your choice. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is in a Temporary folder, files may be deleted by you or automatically if your system is set to empty temp files.

For the longest time, now, my computer has been unable to stay in sleep mode. Any time I put it in sleep mode, it will stay asleep for maybe 3-5 minutes, and then it pops back on. It didn't do this at first, and I can't really think of anything I had installed or changed that would cause this to occur.

I had given up on solving the issue, because I just couldn't figure it out. But now it's annoying me again. Earlier today, I looked through some of my installed programs that run in the background, and I made sure to close all of them, thinking one (or more) of them might be causing the computer to continually wake up, but nothing changed...

I don't suspect I have any kind of malware, as I've had this issue for a long time, now, and I haven't had any other problems or issues (not to mention, I do frequent virus scans on my machine). I just can't figure out what it keeps doing this...

A:Computer won't stay asleep?

I would guess at a software program running in the background or maybe an update service for a piece of software. Is your mouse getting moved while the computer's asleep? Go into Control Panel and Power Options and recheck your settings for sleep and hibernation.

For the past few months I've been having an issue with sleep and hibernation on my PC. Just wont stay sleep or stay hibernation for any longer than 5 minutes then it automatically wakes back up on its own. I'm assuming this is a software issue but I looked through all my processes and can't figure out what is causing my CPU to wake back up unexpectedly.

I am having a problem with a Gateway computer here at work.
This morning I turned it on, it went all the way to the start up page that has the Gateway emblem on it the progress bar across the top got past 3/4ths of the way to start up, then the power just shut down. I tried to power it back up again but no luck, so I checked the power strip that I was using to see if it was good and it was. Tried to power up again but nothing finally decided to shut down the power strip and disconnect the power cord into the tower to check to see if anything was loose inside, nothing loose, powered everything back up again. Started up like before then the power just shut off again. The fan will run while the power is up but soon as I loose the power it will not work anymore, nothing inside the computer is getting hot at all. Not even the processor, it barely gets warm. I have thoght about changing out the power supply but do not know if that is the problem or if it is something else. If any one out there knows what might be the problem or some suggestions to what to look for please let me know, I need to get this computer back as soon as possible, Thanks , Roger.

We have a compaq running windows xp, I tried restaring it several times and I keep getting different results. Sometimes it will cut immediately off and I hear one short beep, sometimes it makes it to the start up screen, so i have tried to start it in safe mode then it cuts off, one time I was able to get to the setup section by pressing f5 only to have it cut off, and once it got all the way through the windows xp start up to the login screen and cut off.

I have cleaned it out and checked the fans, all of which are running. I also checked for any possible shorts in the wires and could not find any.

I have no clue.

Also check that one of the tabs on the CPU cooler hold down bracket isn't broken. I have replaced a few of these after the plastic was old and brittle, and the tab just broke off.

A:Computer won't stay in sleep mode

Its either mouse, keyboard or nic card. It is usually the nic card that causes the problem

This problem happened to me shortly after I got my computer, but I was able to fix it by disabling my network connector from waking the computer up, so only the mouse and keyboard would do it...but it's starting again! I've checked, and the settings are still the same as far as power management is concerned; I have no viruses or malware, so what could make it start back up only a few minutes after I set it on Standby?

Computer is an HP Pavilion a6803w running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

Hello,

HP still does not have full driver support for their Vista Supported laptop line, thus the reason for this bug. It's nothing to worry about, though.

Hey,

I've got a brand new (4 days old) Intel DQ35j0 MB and it won't stay in sleep. It will for about three minutes then it "wakes" up again. I tried unplugging the mouse and keyboard thinking maybe either one was sending a signal and causing it but no luck. Also, I need to update the BIOS. Is there anyway to do that without a floppy disk?

Thanks

A:Computer Won't Stay In Sleep Mode

Why do you "Need" to update the BIOS. Usually, you want to leave the BIOS alone unless you know of a solid reason to update it. Updating the BIOS is a risky procedure that can sometimes destroy a computer, unless you have experience.
Usually, you can fix the sleep issue by changing your settings in the control panel, or updating the driver.

I'm not sure why it's doing this. It's been staying in sleep mode just fine up until recently. I just bought a new cpu cooler to replace the stock intel one that came with the cpu and I installed it and turned the computer on and the screen comes on and it beeps normally then gets to the startup screen where it starts to check for hard drives and then it shuts off. I turned it back on and it shut off even sooner, I waited a little bit and then turned it on and watched the screen and it gave me the message that it was going into safe mode and i have to reset my cpu and memory settings in cmos. I also made sure that the cpu overheat light did not come on.

motherboard: EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLI Socket 775 Motherboard
new cooler installed: ZALMAN CNPS 9700 NT 110mm 2 Ball Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler

i did have to remove the mobo to install the cooler so i could install the back plate under the mobo.

A:Installed new CPU cooler and computer will not stay on

It's either no seated properly or the fan isn't running and the bios is shutting down the PC. That's my guess.

I just downloaded the latest NVIDIA driver from: http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_186.81_whql.html

Every time I shut down or restart my computer and then turn it on again, none of the pictures load, even if I let it sit for a long time (a few hours).

I eventually have to restart in Safe Mode, and then reinstall the driver...Only to have none of the pictures load again the next time I start it up (note that the laptop DOES start up -- I see the Toshiba Loading screen, followed by the microsoft windows loading bar with no microsoft windows icon).

I am using a Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi5, I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit). My graphics card is GeForce 8600M GT.

I checked the driver version to see if I properly installed the driver, and it looks like I did (it says Driver Version: 186.81 in the NVIDIA control panel system information tab).

Yes, I had more than enough space for the driver on my computer. And yes it appears to be working fine after I installed it; it's just when I shut down and start it up again that it gets messed up.

Any help would be much appreciated .

A:The new NVIDIA driver won't stay on my computer

Bumping this up, as the problem is still there.

Here's some more information that may or may not help:

1) When I put my computer into hibernate mode and start it back up after a few hours, everything runs just fine.

2) When I start it up in safe mode, re-install the driver, and then use the restart option, everything also runs just fine.

3) I got a little popup box in my toolbar asking if I wanted windows to search for solutions to the problems online. It had 3 entries that looked like it might be related to my problem. The first 2 were video card errors, and the third was error: failure to properly install video driver. However, when I sent information on all 3 of these problems, windows could not find a solution to any of them.

4) I did not uninstall anything before installing the video card driver, if that makes any difference (it did not give any specific instructions to do so on the NVIDIA page I downloaded it from, so I assumed it was okay to just install over the old one).

Edit: If 4) is the problem, I need instructions on how to do that. *note: I'm pretty much computer illiterate =(

My computer wakes from sleep mode every 15 mins. The only way I can keep this from happening is to use zone alarm and stop all internet activity. It will still wake one time after I lock the internet, but the second time I hit the sleep button, it will stay in sleep mode until I go back online.

This problem started after I backdated my computer clock, about a year ago, (hoping to get information out of a program that had expired). Since then I have used the system restore disks and restored my computer to no avail. I've checked everything that I can think of that might be trying to access the internet, but can't find what it is. I would appreciate any help.

Over the past couple days when I put my computer into stand by, it pops right out within a matter of seconds. If I go ahead and shut down at that point it gives me a message about other users being logged on.

Sometimes when I am online a new explorer screen opens redirecting me to some other site, it has some musuem art type picture and will say that it is redirecting me here or there, it changes. I always close it before it goes any farther.

I have ran my virus scan, spyware doctor and spybot search and destroy. They have turned up nothing. This is windows XP.

Thanks!

How can i find out what is keeping my computer from going into sleep or hibernation mode? I have the power management set to turn the monitor off after 10 minutes of no use and to put the computer into sleep mode after 30 and hibernation after 1 hour. It does turn the monitor off, but then when i wake up the screen is on like the computer has been in use the whole night. How do i find out what the problem is?

A:Computer won't stay in sleep mode

Some devices have the ability to resume/bring the system out of hibernation. Most commonly it is modems or network adapters that are setup this way - but it could be almost anything doing this. But I would start by checking your modem/network adapters settings

I don't know if this belongs here, so if not, move it to the right place.

Anyway, for a while now, my computer won't go to sleep. Once I hit the sleep button, it will go to sleep...for about a couple/few minutes, then wake up. I don't know, but also it even doesn't go back to sleep mode when after staying on for a long while. It wasn't working on anything, it was at the start menu where you go to click "sleep". I don't know how to explain this. Please help me.

A:My computer doesn't stay asleep

As long as your power options are set correctly, however, if maintenance tasks or scans that are running in the background it will wake up. Another item that would probably wake your computer is the network.

I've been having a whole lot of problem with my computer and I've run out of ideas on getting it up and running. I just built it in July, I'm running a 3gig Pentium D. (I don't recall the type of motherboard or GPU, sorry. I can look it up when I get a chance if it is important). The computer worked perfectly until about a week ago. It started freezing up or going to sleep and not waking back up. I did an antivirus scan and searched for spyware at the time and nothing came up.
I loaned my computer to a friend for the weekend, but when I set it up for her at her house, it wouldn't turn on for more than a couple seconds. It started up and sounded normal, but then would just shut off. I took off the case and poked around and noticed the fan in my PSU wasn't spinning. So I went out and bought a new PSU, an Antec 430w (I had been using an antec 350w). I'm still having the same problem. After the computer shuts off, there is still power to the motherboard because the LED on it is still lit. The new PSU seems to be working great, i checked the fan it in and all my other fans. I checked all my connections and all my cards and the memory to be sure they are seated fine.
If anyone can offer me some suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Ashley

A:computer won't stay on long enough to boot

i had the same problem...i'm also using a Pentium D 3 Ghz...when i moved the computer to a different room, my heatsink and CPU fan got a bit loose from the motherboard so i could only boot the computer for...10 seconds before it heated up to 100 degrees Celcius, which is automatic shutdown temp for most computers. so thats the only thing i can think of...you're CPU fan might be a little loose, you really have to push those pins hard...stupid Intel fans...for $260 you think they'd give a better fan...oh well....hope this helps.

Hi,

I am clueless when it comes to the inner workings of a computer and I now seem to have a problem that a bit of sweet talking won't fix.

My daughter was playing a game on our home computer and she says that the disk started making a scrathing sound and then the screen froze. She took the disc out and put it back in but it didn't make any difference.

After leaving it alone for a few hours I came to the computer to see that it was still frozen and no amount of button bashing was going to get it working again.

I switched the computer off manually and now it won't turn back on.

It loads so far and then I get a bright blue screen and then it shuts down.

Can anyone help me please as I am now stuck using my ancient laptop again and could do with my computer up and running again pretty quickly.

Thanks

After six hours or so of shutting down and restarting to add software, the computer continued to constantly boot up for about 5 minutes, then shut down, then repeat over and over for the rest of the night. Now when I start Windows normally, the computer stays on for a few minutes, then shuts down and restarts. I'm using it now in Safe Mode with networking, and it stays on and accesses the internet. This issue has come and gone at random times with this computer. It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and it will not stay asleep. Any way I tell it to sleep, it will sleep for 1-2 seconds, then wake right back up. Also, when I tell the computer to shut down, it starts right back up. The latter I can deal with...but being a college student, my laptop needs to be able to sleep as much as i do. Things I have done:

-Unplugged EVERYTHING from the computer before trying to put it to sleep
-Disabled ethernet/lan devices
-Prevented ALL devices from waking the machine, both in device manager and in bios
-Prevented ALL services I can think of from waking the machine

If I open up a command prompt and enter powercfg -lastwake, the computer states that it was woken up but has 0 wake source count.

If I look at the event viewer, 3 events are listed in this order every time I try to sleep:

1. The system is entering sleep. (Source: Kernel-Power)
2. The system time has changed to yyyy‎-‎mm‎-‎ddThh:mm:ss.500000000Z (note: the 500000000Z is consistent) from ‎yyyy‎-‎mm‎-‎ddThh:mm:ss.xxxxxxx00Z. (Source: Kernel-General)
3. The system has resumed from sleep. Wake source: Unknown. (Source: Power-Troubleshooter)

I may be crazy but it seems to me like the only possible thing that could be waking it would be the system time changing.

As stated in the opening, this has happened a few times. When I first go... Read more
