No sound on Dell Dimension even after reformatting

Q: No sound on Dell Dimension even after reformatting

I'm trying to solve a sound problem on someone else's computer, and it's driving me insane.

Symptoms: No sound playback in Windows at all. The problem started out of nowhere, no one has any idea how it happened. It's an integrated sound card, and I'd have chalked it up to a dead sound card if it weren't for the fact that the audio still works on Dell's diagnostics tool accessed during boot-up. Integrated sound is enabled in BIOS. The sound device is recognized by Windows and shows up in Device Manager, but doesn't report any problems at all, it just won't play sound at all.
Almost forgot to mention: Sigmatel HD audio, and yes, Microsoft UAA bus driver is installed too. Windows XP SP3.

Things I've tried: Uninstalling and reinstalling all manner of drivers. Updated bios, reinstalled chipset drivers, reinstalled sound drivers about a hundred times. Thinking it was a driver conflict beyond my reckoning, I backed up all data and did a factory reformat. Still no sound.

So, it can't be a dead card, since it plays the test song just fine in Dell diagnostics outside of Windows. But if a complete reformat can't fix this problem, what possibly could?

A: No sound on Dell Dimension even after reformatting

1. re: hearing sound from Dell;s diagnostic vs hearing "sound"
Your computer can create mono-tonic tones without needing a sound card or audio drivers and codecs. I'm going to guess if you run the Beepex tool in Windows you'll still hear simple tones (just not audio files)

2. Check Problem Devices report

Make sure all your devices are connected and powered on
Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32. Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
3. Generate and attach a DirectX report

click Start->Run, enter dxdiag
Notice progress in lower left window corner
When done, click Save Information button and save to your Desktop
In TechSpot, use the paper clip icon to attach the report. (If you don't see icon you may need to first click Go Advanced)
4. click Start->Run, enter services.msc. Scroll to Windows Audio. Verify Status=Started and StartupType=Automatic

/* edit */
I should clarify: The computer can play monotonic tones directly to an internal speakers - which, ummmm... no pun intended "sounds" like applies to your case

Hi, I am trying to reformat a Dell Dimension on Windows XP Home, and have never had a problem like this, don't know what I am missing, the machine was purchased with XP home on it, and there is a reinstall disk. When you do the reformatt when it comes back up and runs through the process it does not ask for the product key? It reformats and when machine is supposedly all set up and ready to go half the information such as ethernet card, audio drivers etc is not there. If you are doing a complete reinstall should it not ask for the product key??? This really has me puzzled, I have reformatted 3 times, and am not coming up with the proper setup. I am going to work now and will not be back until this evening, but anyones input into this would be greatly appreciated.

Tks Chris

Hi,
I reformatted my friends computer after receiving BSOD with error code stop 0x032.
His computer is a Dell Dimension 3000.
Everything is working except the sound. The speaker has disappeared from the tray, when I go into control panel it shows no device connected.
I have downloaded every driver I can think of. I have been told it might need a new sound card, but the sound card was working fine before the BSOD.

This is one of the most annoying things I have ever tried to sort out and any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

A:No Sound On A Dell Dimension

What have you done to try to resolve this?

Check to make sure that the sound isn't muted in the task bar?

Check in the Control Panel under Sound and Audio devices to see what the volume level is set to?

Check in the Device Manager for the Sound, video and game controllers for any errors?

To access the Device Manager go to Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Device Manager. Scroll down till you see the Sound, video and game controllers, click in the box beside it with the + inside to expand the tree. The errors will appear as a big red X.

I've got a Dell Dimension 310 Service Tag: JGYRJ91 with Windows XP.
It had some serious malware issues so we re-installed Windows and found that we didn't have the driver disks anymore. Dell sent them and I thought I got everything up and running again, but now the speakers don't put out sound for anything.
My Device Manager Menu has a Yellow exclamation point for "IDT high definition audio codec driver" and it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" when I check the properties on it.
When I click the troubleshoot button, it says to uninstall, but I want to check here first if that's the best thing to do. I'm worried about getting it back.
The Network Controller is yellow on the Device Manager Menu as well.
I tried several times to install drivers for these two things but the computer couldn't locate them or find newer ones.

A:No sound on Dell Dimension 310

According to the service tag number for your Dell Dimension 310, the XP drivers for the sound device and network adapter are:

SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio

Driver Version: 5.10.0.4823

Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection

Driver Version: 8.0.15.0

------------------------------------------------------------------

The Intel site has a more current driver version 13.5(8.0.47.0) for that network adapter.

I lost my sound awhile back. I am using Windows XP with Harman Kardon Speakers. I can get a faint sound by plugging in some earphones into the earphone jack in my speakers. I don't get any sound when plugging it into the earphone jack on my CD-Rom, nor from the speakers themselves.

I have updated all of my drivers. Everything is turned on and plugged in.

Thank you

I have a Dell Dimension 4700. I recently installed Windows XP Professional onto, instead of Windows XP Home Edition, that it had originally came with. After installing it, there was no sound at all. This happened once before while my computer was under warranty, and the Dell Customer Service Agent that I chatted with sent me to www.driverguide.com to download a driver to fix the problem. But I cannot find the name of the file I downloaded. Does anyone know how I can restore the sound to my computer. Listed below is whatever information I could find on Dell's website about my sound card. Thanks!
"CARD (CIRCUIT), MULTI-MEDIA, AUDIO, SB0413"
"Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio"

I have tried downloading the driver from Dell.com, and running a PC scan from Dell.com, the driver does not work, and the Scan detects no problems. Any information that I've searched for on the internet don't seem to apply to my problem. I'd appreciate any help!

Something could be wrong internally. Any chance of trying another set of speakers or headphones? Is this just on music CD's or also streaming audio? Have you move anything around recently that could cause interference? Double check your settings in the volume control panel and in sound properties

I have installed Windows 8 on my older computer, Dell Dimension 8400. Everything worked except my sound drivers. I checked the website and there were 2 available downloads for sound drivers. I downloaded both. One said incorrect hardware, so I assumed that that wasn't right driver. I tried the other, and first it said Wrong OS, so I ran it in recommended compatibility, then it said Incorrect hardware. So both drivers must be incompatible? But when I had windows XP before, it worked perfectly. Not sure why it doesn't now. I also tried using the driver searcher thingy. It was searching for like an hour, and when I tried to stop it, it wouldn't close. I had to force close it, and it found nothing.

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem? If so, please help me!

A:Sound drivers for Dell Dimension 8400?

did you insure they said for windows 7, and were for your machine? some machines from dell may have different drivers depending on the configureation of machine even if said machine has multiple OSs that were shipped with it, the hard ware its self may be slightly different example sound blaster hardware (creative) may have shipped with your Dell 8400 with XP but the machine with windows 7 may have been shipped with audio audigy (made up for this example) hardware so the drivers may be different in respects to that, or it could be generic intel driver(s) (i don't think intel makes sound cards but i could be wrong...

if you know the manufacture of the hardware components (say creative/sound blaster) i would go to the manufactures website and download the proper/appropriate drivers for the hardware on the windows 7 platform...

Well, I had to reinstall WinXP a few months back. I actually want my sound to work again, and I have been at it for four hours...

I have tried any and all techniques and methods for doing this that I have ever learned for the past twenty years. I found a driver on my installation CD, copied it, extracted it, and attempted to install it...
oh, an unknown error occurs. The installer tells me to reboot my computer, and try again, which does not alter the outcome...

I found this page, looking through your archives:

it creates the same outcome. I get the SoundMax installation screen, and then it fails after going through a few screens, telling me a driver has not been found... it tells me to reboot, and try again. Which changes nothing.

I do not know if this is a clue, but there is no volume control in my system tray, and if I attempt to open the volume control through the start menu, under accessories-entertainment, I get this message:

"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to control panel, click Printers and other hardware, and then click add hardware."

I can utilize a readme file, which opens a browser window for the driver titled, "Analog Devices 198x Integrated Audio Driver." If I select open and enter the proper path, I get to the same place... the SoundMax instal... Read more

Ok, as stated already, I have a Dell Dimension 4400 with a D845PT mobo with Windows XP Home SP3... I do not have the original disc anymore... I had installed a SB Audigy sound card, then uninstalled it a few months later b/c i didn't see (hear?) much of a difference. Anyway, when I rebooted my PC, I noticed I had no sound. I go to control panel and go into Sounds and Audio Devices but it says "No audio device" or something like that with "Modem #1 Line" as the device used.... I have already went to Dell and Intel to download the drivers (AD1885 codec) with no luck... So I downloaded the SoundMax drivers and it says "Driver not found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again." every single time. So I go into the BIOS thinking the on-board audio is set to disabled but, to my amazement, that isn't even an option!! I've updated the BIOS and still the same thing. I am running out of options. I am by far a newbie when it comes to PC's but obviously not smart enough when it comes to a simple driver installation!!

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device etc. It seems like the drivers are not correct or something. Ok so I have a Dell Dimension 4600c and I had to format and re-install Windows XP home Edition. I did so with the disks provided by Dell. When I had finished this the video card and sound device were malfunctioning. I had to use another disk provided by Dell to reinstall the video driver and now that works, but when I tried to reistall the sound driver I keep getting a error message that says I have no sound device installed. As far as I know the sound card is integrated into the motherboard. I opened the computer to upgrade the ram and saw only 1 open slot but I believe its for a video card upgrade, its a brown plastic slot. There are no other open slots that I can see. Everytime I try to use something with sound I get an error messsage saying that I have no sound device installed. Can someone help me? Or should I take it to a tech? Thanks in advanced for the help!

A:Dell Dimension 4600c no sound device installed

Yes, the spec for the 4600c says there is an onboard sound card.

Click Start->Run, enter dxdiag. Check the Sound tab. Does it claim anything is installed? or say there is an error?

Also look in your BIOS settings. Look for any option about onboard sound and make sure it is Enabled.

Hi,

The top fan (the one with 7 fins that's above the CPU cooling fan) is making a groaning noise. I can't figure out how to remove it in order to clean it, though I did spray compressed air on it through the grill on the back of the computer tower.

The computer works fine, software wise, but that groaning sound is scaring the crap out of me and makes me afraid to run the computer for more than five minutes at a time. I've been searching the Internet for even the name of this fan, but to no avail. I even tried searching the manufacturer's part ID number (CN-0Y2682-17972-452-31X1, Rev A01, China).

Does anyone know what this fan is called and/or how I can fix it?

Thanks a million in advance!!!!!

I hope someone can help. I'm not fully knowledgeable with computers but know the basics.
I bought a second hand Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows 7.
I have no sound.
The drivers are installed in Device Manager (Realtec AC'97), and also (Uniplex Half Modem) both under sound, video controllers. There are no exclamation marks in device manager. All drivers are up to date.
Dell diagnostic and Microsoft Fix it both say everything is ok.
There is no sound from internal speaker. I tried external speakers via green jack at back & front of machine but there is no option to select these speakers.
If I try to play music then nothing happens.
When I access the sound option there is a green 'equalizer bar' which goes up and down to tell music is playing...but I can't hear anything.
I have checked and mute is not selected-volume is set to 100%.
I opened the machine and behind the jack plug seems to be closed with no removable parts.
I downloaded the latest Audio Driver from Dell but it says its not compatible with my OS.

I think I've covered everything I've done.

Thanks

A:Dell Dimension 3000 No sound but everything installed correctly.

I forgot to mention that when I connected the external speakers there was no option to select them in Audio Manager.

A:No Sound after using Dell Dimension 8400 front headphone jack

It is a simple mechanical problem. When you plug in the headphone jack, a spring leaf is moved breaking the circuit to the speakers. When you remove the headphone jack, the spring leaf is supposed to move back to the normal closed position. The metal used to construct your headphone jack was made of a metal too soft to spring back into position. You will have to open the computer case and bend the contacts back to the correct position. If you are electronics savvy you can replace the jack -- or you should ask Dell to replace your computer under warranty.

Hi,

Ever since reformatting my PC due to a complete spyware and malware takeover, i have had no audio. In device manager, there is a yellow ? next to Multimedia Audio Controller. I have tried to update drivers using my dell driver CD and the Dell website itself, but to no avail.

On another forum, someone said that perhaps it was because I had not installed chipset drivers, (which I know should be installed before sound devices etc) however I uninstalled my sound drivers, installed the chipset drivers, and re - installed my sound drivers (SoundMax one anyway) but again with no luck.

Curiously, if I tell it that I will choose the driver to install, and I pick a SoundBlaster one, the Multimedia Audio Controller goes away (although there is still no sound) even though I don't have a SoundBlaster card.
I really don't want to reformat my system again unless its really necessary.

I like to hear forum members opinion.
Just recently fixed the issue with Dell Dimension 4300, machine didn't power up when power switch pressed. I replaced original dead 250W PSU with new 430W dual fan and now comp is running. This PC is:
Intel 845 1.6 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 4 DMA channels and SDRAM PC133 512 mb of memory.
I also upgraded USB to 2.0, nice 128MB video card and some other goodies.
Now, I got another stock Dell Dimension 8100 without papers, but I check and this particular one has:
Intel 850 1.4 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 8 DMA channels and 384 mb RDRAM of memory. Nothing was done to this machine, and it also have original working 250W PSU.
What better to do? Keep the Dimension 4300 or remove goodies that compatible with 8100 motherboard, including fabricating in, new, dual fan PSU and excluding memory, I assume SDRAM and RDRAM not compatible and transfer to Dimension 8100?
Is 8100 machine more advanced then 4300? I know they both pretty old and outdated. I personally bough 4300 for my dad in 2001. Is 8100 was produced later? I see that CPU is Intel 850 vs 845..
Guys, opinion welcome.
Thanks,
Alex

I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. Hi all,
I have a spare computer from work, but I do not know the password to log in, and so would like to wipe it. Ergo, I decided to try and boot the computer using a USB thumb drive with Ubuntu on it, so as to wipe the windows partition on the hard drive and then install Ubuntu. The computer boots normally to the Windows XP login screen. When I press F2 or F12, there is no display output. I have tried this with a variety of monitors and with two D-SUB cables (one at a time). These are the Samsung LT27B551EW, LG 27EA63V-P and Dell Rev A00. None of them show either the Dell splash screen or the BIOS screen. I have tried pressing F2 and F12 at strategic intervals (every 2 seconds) but still there is no display output. I also know that I was able to access the BIOS on the same computer a few months ago, but I forgot which displays I used then - I had to wait for permission to wipe the hard drive.
I have also looked up this problem in a number of other places, and found that this is supposedly due to an incompatibility of some kind with the monitor. However, I am not sure as to how I might go about fixing this issue, as I do not have any other monitors or cables which work with the Dell - all my other cables are either HDMI or other sorts of cable which do not plug in to the Dell. If there is a way to use the hard drive and wipe it without accessing the BIOS I would also be grateful to hear about that too.

Try connecting the USB stick before you power the system on.
You can try this too:

Power off, and unplug power cord from rear of PC
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
Power on and immediately tap F12 a couple of times

Hello to all,   I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts.    As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model:   All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710    (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one)   All, Windows XPTopic:   (Maybe this one too)   All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities   For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. Windows XP only appears in the Operating System menu. I pretty much know the install order but as I said, I'm a bit confused about selecting the correct drivers from the disc. This computer is not connected to the internet at the moment so I can't download and use any sort of driver detection program. Other searches have confused me further and have provided no specific answer to this problem.&nbs... Read more

A:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.

I have a nasty nasty infection on my pc. I've tried several things to remove it myself and I can see that the forum for HJT logs and malware removal is swamped here...

So, I'm considering a reformat. My Dell Dimension came with a utility called the DSR--Dell System Restore. It's a hidden partition users can go to to easily set the OS (Windows XP in my case) to it's original "from the factory" state.

I haven't been saving a lot of my files to disc the way I should have been. And now this infection has disable most of my operating system's peripherals--I can't burn cd/dvd, can't print, I don't even have audio right now. I'm in Safe Mode With Networking because it's the only way I can get onto the net.

I've read a few good turtorials about using the DSR but, none of them mention whether I can just re-install my snapshot to my main drive (C and leave some files I backed up to D: or, if all my disc will be wiped clean--including the files I moved to D: ?

Does anyone know anything about this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

After doing a clean install of my computer about a week ago (Windows XP Home Edition) my Dell speakers won't work at all, in WMP and on websites, such as YouTube. I installed the driver from Dell Support but they still don't work. Everything is plugged in properly and the green light on the right speaker goes on, but no sound at all comes out. NOTHING. I looked around in Audio settings and everything seems to be in place. The speakers aren't muted or anything. Could someone please help me solve this problem? Thanks!

A:Dell Speakers won't work on Dell Dimension B110

Check your connections again. We've all plugged in the PC connection to the wrong port from time to time.
If that's not the problem, uninstall the driver in Device Manager and reinstall.

Hi, my problem is that after reformatting the Dell computer Windows XP, the fps seems to be as if it was 5 the whole time. It wasn't smooth at all and some of the drivers didn't work.

Drivers that didn't work: r126542, and r119714.

I was wondering if there was any way to fix it. Thanks.

I'm trying to reformat my Dell Dimension that I bought earlier this year (in April). It's been acting up so I took it in for a tune up and a new power supply installed and the guy called me back and said that after he installed the power supply he tried to run a disk cleanup and it started into a startup loop. I said it's okay I'll just reformat, so when I got home I put in my disk and started up the boot menu and told it to install windows. The problem is, I can't run .exes (7zip .exe to be specific, among a few others).

Basically my question is this: is there more to reformatting than just booting from Dell's Vista Home Premium disc? I don't seem to be doing it right...

A:Reformatting a Dell

Try posting on the Dell forum on the Dell website. Might get a response there.

I have an old Dell Dimension that I am in the process of fixing up. It has a pirated copy of Windows Vista on it now, but I want to put a legit copy of the Windows XP Home that came with the computer. Could I do this by ordering this CD: Microsoft Windows XP Home Restore CD for Dell Computers - R2490 and then using the product key that is labeled on top of the computer? Thanks!

A:Reformatting a Dell

An Dell OEM copy of Windows XP does not need a product key to be entered while installing Windows. I would also look up the model and download all drivers Chipset, Video, Audio, Network Adapter if they are available at the Dell website. Then install them install those drivers after installing Windows.

My question is this: Why is it partitioned this way? Is it ok to delete all of the partitions and reformat with just one drive? When I went to her My Computer, there was only one drive, it didn't show up like the screen was showing.

If you have the Dell System restore ( not all Dells do ) you can use that and you will not need a install CD

If not, You can get a reinstallation guide specific to your Dell here ( You will have to change the operating system to match yours.

You can request a replacement instalation cd here:

I have a Dell XPS 410. I have never reformatted an OEM-type machine like a Dell before. how does the "restore" partition on the hard drive factor in? Would I be best served to simply wipe the whole drive and go from CD? OR does Dell typically limit one's abilities in this regard? I'm not sure what all was actually included on the disc, and I don't want to have to end up buying a full retail version of Vista if I mess it up somehow.

ps, I have an external hard drive on which I have downloaded the latest Video drivers and such, if this will help me at all....

Hello BC people,

It looks like I have an Adobe virus that's sticking pretty good. Already tried getting rid of it with TDS Killer and MBAM, tried a system restore to an earlier date, none of these have worked. Spent waaaaay too much time just over a year ago trying to disolve a virus so not interested in going through anything of that nature. I like the idea of reformatting and starting fresh. All my files are backed up and I tried reformatting by holding the Ctrl+F11 on the Dell start-up window and releassing the keys before the window was finished loading and that's not working. This is how I reformatted last time but this virus is of course, stronger and worse than last years models ;). I then tried reformatting using the reinstallation DVD, Windows XP, media center addition 2005 that came with the PC and that starts to go, but 5 or 10 minutes after I start the installation I end up back on my existing desktop. A couple times it had actually stated that the installation had completed but it really hadn't. Looking for a solution, the quicker the better and less painless.

PS Service pack 2 if it matters

Thanks,
Dave

Hey BC!
My mom wants to give away her old Dell 4600 to my sister. It came with a reformatting CD (in the color of maroon), as well as a couple of blue driver discs.
Sadly, when the reformat CD is put in, it spends a good five minutes loading various drivers, and then so generously provides me with this error:
"Setup cannot load the keyboard layout file KBDUS.DLL. Setup cannot continue. Shut down or restart your computer."

And then, the keyboard starts working until the computer is forced to be shut down by holding down the power button and turned back on again.
Help would be greatly appreciated!

I am trying to reformat an older dell dimension 4100
and reinstall XP on it.
Its slow, has alot of junk on it and I want to get it fresh for the school year. Kids use it for word, dictionary, homework searching ect.

It has XP on it now, and service pack 1,2 and 3

If I put in my xp disk, it will tell me the disk is the older xp (before all the service packs) and it cannot install it.
it will get me to the point of seeing what the partitions are ect but I cannot delete or reformat them since the set up files have installed some files.

I want to get to "real" dos and reformat it.
I want to boot to my windows 98 floppy and reformat from there but pressing f12 to change the boot order does not function.

So Im stuck as to what to do.
Is there any other tricks to acess the bios or boot order?

A:Reformatting older Dell

Boot from the XP CD, don't try to install when Windows is already running. You may have to go into Setup/BIOS to change the boot order if F12 won't let you select the CD/DVD-ROM.

Then you can delete/re-create the partitions, and install.

Note that some Dell's that shipped with 2 optical drives will only boot from one of them, usually the top one.

Have a Dell 410 XPS with vista that I would like to reformat. What is the proper procedure for reformatting both the C and D drives. My reinstallation disk has more options than the reinstalation disks that came with my old Compaq(it had 2 cds and no otions). The manual that came with my computer is rather vague about this. I know this can be a long drawn out affair, and have backed up all my info and would like to clean my computer out and bring it back to like it was the day I got it. Yes I do have some major issues with my computer that requires me to reformat, mostly caused by me.
thanks mike

A:Reformatting A Dell 410 Computer

I did a Dell today that used F8 to access the recovery partition. That should be the quickest way to reformat your Dell and will leave the recovery partition intact (along with the Tools partition if you have one).

If you'd like to get rid of all partitions, then you'll have to delete the partitions and create one partition to hold everything. Then you can install Vista with the Operating System, Drivers, and Utilities disks that came with your Dell.

Personally, I'd go with the first option above - it's quicker and you won't have to install all the drivers and applications.

A:The Fan for Dell Dimension E

Unless it's a Dell OEM fan, you'll get a "fan failed" error each time you boot the system - the Dell fan has an onboard thermistor that is required by the system.
Is this the case fan or the CPU fan you need?

My parents have this Dell Dimension 4400 and they told me to fix it or they would take away my DSL because THEY don't have a computer to use it with. Me, I just bought a HP dv2037 laptop and I'm loving it. I've always hated Dell (because HP is better), and have this deathwish on my parents computer... well, today... it seems my wish may have come true. The first problem was with the network adapter. I fixed that with no problem, then when it was fixed I thought to myself... well I have all these old junk computer laying around, I may as well upgrade their computer a little bit by putting some more memory in it.

Yeah, that didn't go to well... Something went horribly wrong, it started beeping really fast and I swear I smelt plastic burning, but when I took the new memory out and put the old memory back in and turned it on, it beeped three times (long beeps). Also, the four LED's on the back were "Yellow - Yellow - Green - Green". I googled the problem for about an hour and all I could find was that I needed to "reseat" the memory... which I did, about a million times. Still... nothing. Can anyone help? Please?

I have a brand new dell dimension and have been unable to get their tech support to answer. So thought I would try you guys in here. I often but not always get an error message when working online. I am not sure whether it is a dell problem or my internet service provider. I have dial up. A small box pops up in my face and it says . . . windows must now shut down because the RPC service terminated. System shutdown initiated by NT/AUTHORITY then it counts down 60 sec and shuts off my computer. I have no control when it does this, i cannot X it out or make it stop. Very annoying. Sometimes it goes for hours and does not do anything, sometimes it will do it 3 times in 30 min. I have scanned for virus' and it comes up clear. Am running Norton.

ok basically i have a dell dimension 8100 (bought in summer 2001 in UK) and i want to get extra RAM for it. I checked out the dell website and they say for 8100 i should use Kingston KTD-DM800/512 512MB Kit . Now not only do i not need this much extra ram, its also really expensive, but on the dell website and the Kingston website this was the smallest amount offered for the 8100 series. So i looked around to see if i can maybe find 256mb ram which can also work on my dell, and i think i might have found some, but im not sure. Here are the specifications of the dell website recommended ram :

Kingston (KTD-DM800/512) 512MB Kit

Product Description Memory - 256 MB x 2 - RIMM 184-PIN - RDRAM
Storage Capacity 256 MB x 2
Technology RDRAM (RAMBUS)
Form Factor RIMM 184-PIN
Bus Clock Rate 800 MHz
and now here are the specs for the ram which i am thinking of buying instead :

Kingston (KVR800X16/256) 256MB RIMM PC800 RDRAM Non-Parity

Product Description Memory - 256 MB x 1 - RIMM 184-PIN - RDRAM
Storage Capacity 256 MB x 1
Upgrade Type Industry standard
Technology RDRAM (RAMBUS)
Form Factor RIMM 184-PIN
Bus Clock Rate 800 MHz
Data Integrity Check Non-parity
these specs seem similar but i dont really know a lot about ram so was just wondering if the 256 one would work on my system ? any help would be appreciated, thanx .

Older HDD's may have the older Molex power plug to the far right as well as a SATA power plug, next to the SATA Data port. Either way, it shouldn't stop you from reformatting the drive and would have nothing to do with allowing you to boot the CD rom drive. You can move the power plug at any time.

I have this old Dell laptop (5 yrs. old) and recently my son accidentally clicked some ad and now we have tons of virus's with lots of pop-ups. I first tried getting rid of the virus's but can't get them all. So, I want to reinstall xp and start over. I found the original xp cd that came with the laptop. After first uninstalling almost everything from the "add or remove programs" feature I had it pretty much stripped down. It even went into safe mode.
BUT, when I slipped in the xp cd and clicked install xp, an error message appeared and said I already had a newer version of xp on the computer and I could not install this version. I took off all the service pack 2 and 3 stuff and thought that would do it, but it still won't let me install.

Is there a way around this?

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get a helping hand. I've recently had to reformat my laptop which is a Dell Inspiron 5150. I used OS Reinstallation CD. I got to the part with the partition and when trying to delete it, I get a message stating that I cannot delete the partition because some files are on it that are necessary for the reinstallation.

So, I just kept going, and reformatted the hard drive. There is said that information on the computer may be lost, which is what I want. Anyway, after the reformat and reinstallation all of the icons are gone from my desktop that I added after the purchase of the laptop. However, after viewing my C: drive, everything is still there.

I need to somehow completely wipe out everything on the laptop and reinstall. I imagine it has to do with me not being able to delete the partition. Can someone advise if maybe there is something I have to do before that?

Thanks

A:Trouble Reformatting My Dell With Window's Xp

The Partition you can't delete is the recovery partition is has re-installation files you need to re-install your operating system with the restore CD. If you do manage to delete this partition your recovery cd's may not work. When you reinstalled windows the system recovery cd's restore the computer back to the way it came from the manufacture. All the software you installed needs to be reinstalled.

The Dell Dimension 2400 desktop appears to be 8 - 10 years old, so reverting it back to its original factory condition is going to revert it back to a very outdated condition.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker?

What's the exact version of Windows XP(including any service pack number) that's on the Microsoft COA sticker?

The Windows operating system would be loaded first, then any necessary device drivers would be loaded next.

Make sure to first disconnect any unnecessary external devices, such as a printer.

Yes.. the highly hated Dell computers.. and I have one.. anyway.. I have vista home premium on it.. and though this might not be related to vista specifically.. I was wondering .. people don't like dell because of their low performance and unexpandable systems.. but.. if performance is the issue ( and apparently vista needs at least 2ghz and 512mb of ram to run it properly.. ) then why not just boost up to 3ghz and 2 gigs of ram?

A:Dell Dimension E520

Sorry, don't follow your logic.

While most recent motherboard will accomodate the RAM, many systems (particularly proprietary BIOS ones such as HP or Dell etc) will not accept faster processors than were available at manufacture time.

Just how do you "boost to 3 GHz?"

If you’re like me you may have sound issues. My sound was glitchee, and I could not find the problem. One day I did find the fix and this is what I did;

Go into the BIOS and check that the UDMA is on. Turn it on if it is not. Set the primary and secondary IDE to auto. Set the IDE hard drive Acoustics mode to Performance. Boot back to Windows and go into the device manager and verify that UDMA is set on both IDE controllers, and if there not enable them. Now run a sound file and see if it works without problems. This fix worked for me and I hope it works for you.

Hi I recently bought a new PC leaving me with two extra dell dimensions as the title mentions. My personal dell, I consider to be the better one (well in its you it was) but for the sake of the post Ill refer to that one as Computer A and the other one will be Computer B. They're both desktops an both running windows XP. Yes I do realize the thing about Microsoft Stopping support for that OS..
So my question is..What to do with these two towers? My son has been using computer B to watch Movies an cartoons. Id like to possibly blend the best parts of these two desktops, get the rebuilt desktop online an possible OS system upgrade if the machine an handle one..
Computer A has several problems an is kinda on its last leg. I was told that the Hard drive was dying out back in December 2013. After being told that I never installed anything new or downloaded anything unnecessary to try an stretch its life. Luckily it is still alive USBs don't work, The only way I can run anything USB is through the Add-on card I installed a buncha years back. Its lets out the most horrible loud Humming noise especially when using anything big like hulu or virus scans.
System properties:
Windows XP
Home edition 2002
32-bit (SP3)
Intel(R)
Pentium (R) 4CPU 3.00Ghz
2.99 GHz, 2.00GB of RAM
Additional Notes:
298 GB space on HD
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
Computer B was given to me by my family. Its not online an my son has been using it so as far as I know ... Read more

PSU and Video Card

outlawarrior781:

I?m at Dell Headquarters in Austin, Texas and I just came across this post. An ATX power supply will most likely not fit in that system because of where the screw holes are and we don't sell an upgraded one for the E521. That would leave you with the 305 watt one that comes stock and whatever video card options can work with that. Feel free to post back if you have any other questions.

Hi all, just signed up here. I did ask this Q on the intro thread but after I read that no questions should be asked there!

I had my Dimension 3000 in standby when we had a power-cut and next time I looked I had the flashing amber power light. After reading up on possible causes I disconnected everything, lifter the bonnet and popped the battery. Checked battery was OK and refitted then just connected the power lead. I noticed a single green flash (accompanied by a jolt of the fans) then the usual amber flashing light. Green light in m/b was on. So I just went round and re-fitted all power leads and gave everything a wiggle. I even lifted the RAM. Tried again - same. Put the RAM back and thought I'd try a different mains socket (why not?) but as I plugged the lead into the PC - BANG! Power lead 5A fuse is OK but no lights at all now......

Any idea if a fresh PS (HP-P2507FWP) will fix things?

Many thanks guys.

A:New PSU for Dell Dimension 3000

That is a base line computer with a barely adequate power supply and the simplest, least expensive of motherboards. You can replace the power supply easily for $35 or so... and with a used one for half that. You might want to borrow a PSU to power up and be certain the problem is not the system board itself.
Look at the back of your case to get the configuration right, as many power supplies will not fit due to the placement of the power socket vs what the case allows. You do not need to use a Dell PSU, but you need to assure the power socket is in the right place.

If your system doesn't support booting from a USB device, there's no way round it.

What is "Last XP"

EDIT:

Never mind, I can see now it's a cracked version, I take it you're not familiar with the forum rules.

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows 98. I took out the hard drive and put in a different one. Then the computer sat for awhile while I was busy with other things. Now going back to it, I cannot get it to boot past the Entering Setup part. It just hangs there. I have a Win 98 boot disk and the Win 98 cd I was going to load, but the computer will not get past this point with or without any disk or cd in. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello All,

I have a year old Dell Dimension 310 and I got a virus on it. After several attempts to remove it my screen just locked up. I tried reformating the seagate hd and even used seagates diagnostic tool but it is gone.

I have a WD 500GB that I bought with a Beyond Micro eSATA external enclosure. I reformated that and I got a Windows Media Center disk from Dell.

Well when I place the CD in it will not even boot? I even made a boot disc but that will not work either. I thought maybe it was a error because I have a video card with a 27" monitor hooked up to the DVI so I hooked up another with the original card and that did not work. I also thought it might be the CD drivers so I tried an external USB DVD and that didnt work either.

I have tried all the F2, F8, ctrl F11 tricks and nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any ideas? I got it to go into safe mode once but cannot remember what I did to get it to go there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Term

When I start up, the computer whirls and whirls for about 25 minutes before it is ready for use.

If I disconnect the wireless connection until the computer has settled down, I can cut about 5 minutes off the start-up process. I use AVG 7.5 internet security and the up-date download that occurs when I first switch on each day does not help, but it is not the cause of the problem.

Sometimes, even after the computer has been on for an hour or two it will start whirling as soon as I use it, but not always.

I do a full AVG scan on a regular basis, and also check for Windows and Microsoft up-dates regularly.

Can anyone help me sort this out? I hope that I do not have to completely wipe the hard drive clean and start again.

A:Dell Dimension 5000

Try running MSCONFIG to see what is running when you first start up your computer, you can disable application running at that time that aren't essential.

How large is your hdd, and how much free space do you have on it?

How much RAM do you have?

If you launch the AVG free control center and then click on Test Center you can use the Scheduler to change the time that you get your updates.

JohnLabib
The Dimension 2400 supports a maximum of 2gb [2x1gb modules] of DDR RAM.
The Dimension 2400 can use either 400MHz or 533MHz, Socket 478, P-4 Northwood, or Celeron processors with a 512k or smaller cache.
The maximum processor size is a Socket 478 Northwood P4 3.06GHz 533MHz FSB processor.
The 2400 will not take Prescott processors [1mb cache].
Prior to upgrading the processor check that the latest BIOS version is installed, with BIOS version A03 Updated CPU microcode was added to support latest CPUs.

Posting a thread with only 5 words isn't going to get you any help. You didn't even mention which version of Windows you're using.
