Spyware scanner that runs from centralized location

Q: Spyware scanner that runs from centralized location

I am looking for a program that I can install on a centralized server and run scans from single client machines. I am not aware of anything that will let me do this. I have about 300 machines and need something besides installing on 300 machines. I would like to hear all suggestions on ways to handle this task.

I'm trying to solve a "slow computer" problem for a friend...The stand-alone version of AVG Anti-Spyware runs slowly on his machine and does not not scan smoothly, stalling a bit every 5 to 15 seconds. This happens even when running in safe mode. Occasionally the scanner will freeze right after I begin scanning, forcing me to do a cold reboot (ctrl-alt-dlt doesn't work).I have run other virus checkers and the system - 1.4 GHZ Gateway desktop, XP Pro SP2 - looks clean, but seems like it should run a bit faster than it is. Nothing unusual is running on startup or via processes, at least nothing I can see in msconfig. A recent "HijackThis" logfile doesn't appear to show anything malevolent.Another weird symtptom is that the Windows "chimes" sound is sometimes cut off when the PC boots up.What could be causing this? Thanks...Moderator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

If you are sure no malware issues Please follow these steps : ? Defrag your system. Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when a file is opened. Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on the hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. This speeds up reading and writing to the disk. If SFC discovers that a protected file has been damaged, altered or missing, it restores the correct version of the file from the cache folder. Hi White Knights, Good Guys and Gals,

My PC was attacked, likely through Internet Explorer today, since I haven't downloaded anything. The following are is the list of Malware that XP Security Center has notified:

=email-worm.win32.netsky.q
=rootkit.win32.agent.pp
=backdoor.win32.kbot.al
=net-worm.win32.mytob.t
=net-worm.win32.dipnet.d
=virus.win32.hala.a
=trojan.downloader.js.multi.ca
=virus.win32.gpcode.ak

and Trojan Remover has identified
c:\windows\system32\vacinit.dll

and Mcafee
NTROSKRN... (rootkit trojan)

The program "Protection Systems" continues to pop up prompting me to buy along with random IExplorer bombs despite having removed it from programs. The system regularly freezes when I employ anti-malware programs.

I have attempted to use in normal and safe operating mode (Mcafee from safe command prompt)
=Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise (halts early in operation, Identifies NTROSKRN and 11 cookies)
=Stopzilla (Halts early in operation)
=Malwarebytes(fails to open even with changed name)
=Rooter Malware Finder (Eric_71) (operates results indeterminant)
=Trojan Remover (Runs. results indeterminant)

I am not in a good position to format the PC (in the wilderness).

Any advice what is preventing these malware programs from operating?

Thanks, and happy to repay the favor particularly if you like homebrew since PC wars arent my specialty!

My father is running an HP C3180 PhotoSmart All-in-One on Windows XP (not SP2, I think). When he does a scan, it is visible in the Photosmart Express application, but nowhere else.

Does anyone know where files resulting from a scan by a C3180 on XP are stored? Or as what type of file? I can see a thumbnail of the images in PhotoSmart Express (misnamed in every respect), but I can't find the files themselves.

Sorry this is so vague, but I can't tell which HP application is actually running the scanner, or anything like that - and the documentation/support is hopeless.

A:HP C3180 scanner - scanned file location

Try looking thru the properties or options in the Photosmart program there should be an option that tells you not only where the downloads aree but the same place will allow you to change the download destination directory.

Hey guys,

I hope i m posting in the correct thread, so my problem is that i m looking for some enterprise level network management tool, to centralize program updates for end user . The basic idea to roll out updates from a controlled environment for programs like mozilla, java updates, everything what the end user should update periodically, but without the problem of restarting and pausing their work on their pc. This would be for windows pc s . I know windows server has WSUS, to rollout windows updates, but i want to manage all updates.
Any ideas, about a product existing which could do this , be it payed or a free one ? ( i m guessing there s a slight chance for existing for free something of this caliber)

Thanks alot,
Steve

Hi,

I'm contemplating configuring a Windows 7 system I have sitting here as a central virus scanner. I'm looking at two concurrent scenarios;

(1). Scan files downloaded by family members
(2). Run scans across my server from the central machine

For (1) I can easily set all download programs like Free Download Manager, DAP, Getright or whatever to always save to a drive on the virus testing machine. Infected files would be sent to a quarantine folder, and clean files would be sent to a "clean" folder.

Likewise for (2) a scan of the map drives each night is easy to set up, though I need a list of files to ignore to prevent false positives.

A couple of questions though;

1. How to make Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome always save to the testing machine, and not to the local machine

2. Any recomendations on what software might offer the best security and flexibility (and I know there are litterally dozens out there, but I'm hoping some one who has worked in corporate environments who use similar virus techniques might have some valuable insights and experiences to share)

3. I'd like to have alerts sent to my machine if anything undesirable is detected.

The network configuruation is 7 Windows 7 client systems, 1 windows XP client and 1 XP system running as a server with coldfusion and IP camera software. These are connected to a gigabit DLink switch and then a netgear WNR3500 router. All cabling and systems support Cat6. All of the Windows 7 clients ... Read more

A:Centralized virus protection for home network

Theoretically yeah, in a way it's nice.

But there are couple of problems I can spot in first look:You are running different versions of Windows (ok, not really bad problem, but may cause some uncomfortability while configuring.
If I understand you right you want AV on only one PC and no security programs on other ones..... (it's a bit problem. Maybe you will be able to protect yourself from downloads and stuff like that. But you will still be vaulnurable to attacks like browser hijack, valnurabalities on java, flash, pdf reader, Buffer overflow and so on..... ). If you manage to configure all your Internet traffic to go through the central PC, then in my opinion it will affect your Internet speed on the PC that wants to et that data. (as it will have to go through central PC first and be scanned by your AV)
But if you want to install AV (client program on all your PCs, and server program on one of them) and be able to control all of them from thr one PC. It's different situation. Then you can buy enterprise version of almost any AV and be able to do this. (I think some home user versions give this option aswell)

But, I am not really professional and I have never really managed enterprise enviroment, so I may be mistaked. those were just my first thoughts.
So let me read more about situations like this, maybe I will be able to come up with solution when I know more about it

Till then consider those points...

I have Spyware Doctor 5.1 installed. I want to COMPLETELY remove all traces of the program. An uninstall removes the files and some registry entries but the registration information still hangs around. If I reinstall SD5.1 the same registration info still exists. I have read the registration data is contained in registry values and/or hidden files. Does anybody know the registry key(s) or file(s) that need to be deleted to vanish the SD registration info from PC.

Thanks.

I had a popup in my toolbar saying I had to update my XP security, and could not get rid of it. I didn't even think it could be malware, but after some research online found out it was. Unfortunately, I did click on it and problems have been really bad ever since. I don't know what exactly, but got this result: not-a-virus: fraudtool.win32.xpsecuritycenter.ba

Since this time, I updated and ran ZA software to isolate the issue and remove it (or so I thought). My connection to IE is extremely slow (no other network issues however). Pages load in 45+ seconds if there is a new window. It seems fine when one window is used to go to another site (for instance if I have google open, then I type "www.techsupportforum.com" in the address bar, the speed is fine. However, if I follow a link to a new window, it takes a long time to load.

I hope this gives you a good enough description to help. I'm familiar with computers but never had something like this happen. Unfortunately, I know computers just enough to probably be dangerous...

We have an MSI all-in-one PC with touchscreen. I'm hoping to find a software package to centralize the happenings in our home. I've done some searching, but I don't really know where to start.

We're hoping to find a software package that...
- Checks multiple accounts for new mail
- Present a memo board so we can leave each other short messages
- Track a calendar so we can all add and update appointments
- Warn of upcoming birthdays, chores that are due, garbage day, etc...
- When idle, show photos, a clock, alerts, etc.
- Shopping list
- Works with the touch screen for most functions
- Eventually will control the X10 or ZWave power controllers for lights, etc.

...basically, replacing the whiteboard on our fridge, the calander on the wall, the constant nagging the kids to do their chores, and the lack of communication between us when we set up appointments, etc.

Does anyone know of software that does this? How about some Google search terms that might find some results?

Thanks!

A:Looking for centralized Home software; Memo's, chore lists, calendar..

I doubt you will find a single software package that can do everything you are asking for.

A few questions you should answer:
You have a single "Home PC", not a "Home Server" with multiple client PC's, correct?
Do more than one person need to use this single PC at the same time?
Does everybody log in and use the same Windows user account?
Are there any restrictions for some users such as children, or does everybody have Administrator authority?
Are you looking for a free solution, or are you willing to pay $$$?
Are you willing and capable to put in whatever time and effort is needed to accomplish all this.
MS Office Outlook email client can do a lot of what you want, but it is not free.
Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird are free, but have fewer features and capability.
Some of this might be done with Windows security and permissions, depending on how you are using User accounts and storing data.

You may be able to find a Business or Individual in your area that specializes in Home Automation that can help you, but it will not be free.

I hope I'm wrong and someone knows of a package like you want, but I believe if such a software package exists, it would be well known and used by a LOT of people, including me.

Hope this helps,
David

(I hope this post is in the right place. If not, I apologize.)

Hi everyone,

I'm having some problems with my Windows XP SP3 desktop computer after a crash a few weeks ago. I took the computer in and had it repaired (the people said they did a repair installation of windows, which I had tried myself and failed). After a little tweaking, it seems to be back to normal except for two things: my webcam and my scanner needed to be re-installed, only re-installing them gave me the message "There was a problem when installing your new hardware. Your new hardware might not work properly" and now my webcam program (bundled with the webcam) "amcap" and my scanner program "Scanwizard" both say that I don't have the respective hardware attached to my computer when I try and run them. I have tried uninstalling the hardware and restarting then re-installing them and have had no success. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and I would greatly appreciate some advice and/or technical help.

Thanks in advance,

Jomon

The repair install might not have been the right thing to do. You may be dealing with partial drivers left-overs... You might try using a "driver cleaner" and see if to can remove these partial drivers

Every time I use it I swear that I am going to write it down somewhere I will remember, well here I am. I do rembember writing it down, but cant remember where.

My computer has been processing everything much slower during the past few months and during the past two weeks, the problem has become unbearable. I suspect that spyware is the problem. Until yesterday, it was taking 1-2 minutes to start up applications such as MS Outlook, Internet using Firefox or Internet Explorer, MS Word and MS Excel. Once these applications are open, it takes an excessive amount of time to complete the simplest operations. Months ago the computer was operating much faster.

I am running Windows XP operating system and have the following anti-spyware programs: Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search & Destroy, CWShredder and Spyware Doctor. Also running Norton Internet Security 2006 for anti-virus.

I have completed all five steps prior to running HiJackThis program. While running the anti-spyware in Safe Mode, three or four spyware items were found, including two Trojans. Since they were deleted yesterday, my computer?s speed has increased, but still is much slower than it operated a few months ago.

Please provide assistance to eliminate the spyware and viruses as well as suggestions to prevent this from occurring in the future.

Attached is the output from HiJackThis.

A:Computer Runs Slow - Spyware Problem?

Welcome to TSF.

You might have too many programs running there causing the slowdown. Also for Spyware Doctor and SpywareDetector, did you buy those yet? If you bought both already, disable one of them from starting up. If you didn't buy either of them yet, uninstall both of them.

Let's try disabling some other programs from startup to see if it helps:

Before you do anything else, create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Restart and see if it's any better now.

So far I haven't seen anything bad happen as a result of it yet but when I came back to my computer I found the work offline message on the screen. I canceled it and then decided to look throught the computer and found three prefetchs that were not there before they were CMD.exe MSNI.EXE and XVFPVRD.COM I then checked the system32 folder and found three files had been added. I could find two of the three based on modifed dates but not the last one. The files were Lovefly.dll and smart.dll they both are listed as some FrameBuffer display driver. When I tried to delete them It stopped me saying they were in use. I ran ad aware but that didn't help and then ran spybot.

After running spybot it found 3 registry files called W32.agent.pz or something like that. The problem is the scan wont finish it will get halfway through and will then say error checking and stop.I never had this problem before and no matter how many times I retried it would always stop at some random place. I just updated it now so if this is the result of some new update glitch could I just reinstall it and just not download whatever update causes it. Even though it doesn't finish I was able to remove the three entries shown I then looked up the virus and found instructions on running something called sdfix so I ran that and it didn't change anything. So I went into safe mode tried spybot again and it failed then went and tried to delete the two dlls I had found. I was able to delete Lovefl... Read more

Hi, first time here,

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. 32 and 64 bit. I have Norton security suite that comes with my Comcast subscription. I scan pretty frequently and I also use CCleaner which works great. I am not having any problems with my computer right now but I have in the past. Something not only got past Norton it also was able to disable Norton. I got it going again fairly quickly but my computer wasn't the same. I did a complete restore and it has been fine. For some reason I still feel like there is something going on in my computer which there may not be. I've noticed some files that looked suspiscious but I can never know for sure so I won't change anything. One time I noticed 3 extra users and I was sure I was infected until I found out Nvidia adds these for updating.
My question is that when I was looking at the files in my registry, I clicked on internet settings then zone and the list expanded to about a page and a half of files with names having to do with sex and porn. They all had the arrow to open a sub folder with on every one was www. I ran Norton and superspyware and a search. Nothing is detecting these files. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ron

Greetings:I am somewhat new to this. I have always been able to solve the few problems I have with AdAware or Spybot. This time though, I am stumped. I installed HiJackThis and have looked through it to the best of my knowledge, but can't find anything. It seems like it all started when I accidently installed YourSiteBar. I have used their removel program but I still get popups. Here is my HiJack log. A:Online Spyware Scanner

Hi, Guy!

I haven't used the application, but I do trust x-block. I also don't think that Mike Healen would get involved in anything second-rate.

The reason that I haven't introduced the service here is that I think recommending it is akin to "giving a man a fish".

When folks download Ad-aware, or Spybot, or both, set the configurations and run their scans, they have now been taught to do that properly. They can do it over and over again, weekly, we hope, with the only "outside" support being updates.

Also, with Spybot Free set to immunize or Ad-aware 7.0, they get some actual protection.

A ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Folks,I have been trying off and on for 2 weeks to clean this machine. It is my brother in laws computer and used by his kids to play many on-line games. It came to me with a BSOD which I recovered from by removing Antivirus XP malware using Malwarebytes Anti malware. I subsequently cleaned about 30 infections off the machine. I have scanned it with AVG Free, Malwarebites, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, House call and Bit defender (online). Still It has a browser highjacker in both Firefox and IE v8. I am getting repeated virus alerts from AVG concerning iastor.sys and one concerning kxdiypod.sys. I have tried to replace iastor.sys by renaming it and copying a new version. Every time I mess with it, I get another AVG alert and it replicates itself. What's a good free spyware scanner that comes , already dowloaded with a certain amount of basic definitions already on it?. Kind of like what Avast does for antivirus.

The reason I ask is that I have a friend that can't get online with her NetZero dialup and I want to eliminate the problem being related to spyware. In other words, I want a scanner that doesn't need to be updated right anyway and just might find something.

By the way...could a virus or malware stop someone from connecting on a dialup connection? When I use the Netzero software it connects briefly to the internet but then the modem shuts down. I don't think it's a modem problem either because I queried the modem just fine and was actually able to connect with a connection I made myself from the new connection option in Windows 2000. However I could not get anything to come up on IE.

I also could not get online by using the Internet Connection Wizard. The one that connects you, using an 800 number. It also was cut off by the modem.

Hello, I have a problem with some spyware that got installed by my younger sibling on the family desktop. I was able to get rid of some of it but i still have the adware icon in the taskbar popping up.
The files that were a problem were part of the netproject spyware...i think i was able to get rid of the files that were being active which were the scit.exe and scm.exe files. The icon that's left in the taskbar is pretty much neutral right now cuz i disabled and deleted IE, but it's still annoying and im pretty sure there's still something in it.

Thanks in advance and i really appreciate the help.

My son downloaded some videos on how to fix his car from You Tube and since then my laptop has been getting worse and worse. I ran Sammsoft ARO and Malware. I have since taken both off my computer thinking that might help. I have AVG, but it comes up with nothing when I scan. I keep getting the threat alert scaneriche.cz.cc/scan/dim_sp2/free as the file name and Exploit Rogue Spyware Scanner (type 140) as the Threat name.
I found a post about rkill on a random site and downloaded rkill, but every time I try to run it my computer goes to blue screen with a loooong message and then reboots automatically.
When I try to use the internet, I am directed to different sites that I don't want.
Help!!

My Computer is:
Lenovo Thinkpad 6460-7EU
Windows XP Pro SP 2 (5.1.2600.2765)
All Updates and Optional Updates Applied
3GB RAM
83GB Free Space on HD (56%)
Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 @ 2.00 Ghz
Symantec Corporate Antivirus 10.0.0.359 (with updates through 22 Apr 2008)
Windows Defender (updated)
Microsoft Malicious Recovery Tool (March 2008)

I have a corporate laptop that had the following symptoms:
1. A link to Viruswebprotect.com kept poping up to initiate a scan
2. "error cleaner" kept popping up
3. "privacy protector" kept popping up
4. "Spyware&Malware Protection" kept popping up
5. A Task Tray icon for "trusted anti-vrus" was present

I found a previous post regarding these exact same symptoms, so instead of posting my initial findings I went ahead with the cleanup, but found even more than the original poster afterwards. The other viruses were Symantec Defined as "Trojan.Vundo" and "downloader.Zlon!gen.2".

After around 12 hours of cleaning I think I have repaired the problem fully and would like to post my HiJackThis Log for your expert opinion:

I've recently acquired the false Zinaps malware "remover," and i'm trying to get rid of it. I've reasd that its really recent, so my previous scanners probably will not do the job. Could I get some help?

The lower task bar "notifies" me constantly with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. It reads "Windows has detected spyware infection. It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you."

By the way, this is Windows XP

Also, my computer's been excruciatingly slow recently (even before Zinaps), so if you could help me take care of those too?

Welcome to TSG

Please click Here to download HijackThis to your desktop.

Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.

It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.

The program will open automatically after installation.

You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.

Close all other windows except HijackThis.

Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile" When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here.

Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I run Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. Never had any problems. I also run Spyware guard. No problems there either. On a weekly basis I run, Spybot, Adaware, Hijack This, and A2 Squared. Once a month I do a Trend-Micro online scan. My computer stays clean.
Right now I can run Zone Alarm and/or Spyware Guard active protection and I can do anything I want on my computer, Internet, online games, emails, word processing, anything. As soon as I run any of the mentioned scanners, they make it haft way through and my computer shuts itself down. It powers itself off. The only thing that is different about the computer is that Dec. 26th I added a router to my desk top for my kids laptops and a USB hub 2.0. All works fine. This problem started on Dec. 27th. My computer will run fine night and day, but soon as I run a scanner, it powers down If this isn't where I should post this question please tell me where it is better suited Thanks

Hello, i suspect this all happened a few days ago when a friend attempted cracking a software program for me. Which he did do, but I see I am paying for it. The day it was cracked AVG detected a trojan downloader, I don't remember the name since i dismissed it.(Had gotten them before with no problem.) But I still ran avg scans in normal and safe mode and deleted all files it showed as a threat. About 4 days later after no problem my computer started acting sluggish all of a sudden, the next day AVG detected a new threat "Exploit Spyware Scanner" through the web alert I believe it was and told me the infected file and process was IEXPLORE.EXE, which was odd since I had deleted internet explorer a long time ago. I finally found it in program files and attempted to delete it but it wouldnt let me. The files I was able to delete from the IEXPLORE.EXE folder would come back the second I deleted them so I gave up and started looking for help. Around this time I started getting popups mostly spyware/adware removal related while firefox was inactive. The site I went to suggested running SuperAntiSpyware removal program, so I did. Out of 50 minutes of scanning it has found these problems:
Adware.Vundo/Variant-PrintDlgExW 9 files
Adware.Vundo/Variant 2 files
Trojan.Downloader-NewJuan/VM 2 files
Adware.Hotbar/ShopperReports(low risk) 24 files

Hi everyone!

Trying to help a friend out with his laptop and my meagre knowledge has fallen flat so have come to the forum to ask for help!

Can anyone tell me what the best "Free" Open Source downloads are to detect and destroy/remove Trojans/Virus's/Worms/Syware etc? As this would be of great help to not only myself and my immediate friend but, by word of mouth, a larger safer community.

Many thanks in advance for all those that can Help!

I have been battling trying to fix my computer for the past four days. It started with my computer just restarting and then a blue screen would come up and it would automatically restart. After I would re boot I started to get these things popping up at the bottom of the screen saying my computer was infected and total security was start running itself. I didn't buy it and quickly began to search the web and see what it actually was. Sure enough it was a virus so I came to this website to see what I needed to do. I downloaded that Malware thing and it would load. I tried to rename it didn't work. oh yeah I also tried to do a system restore and it will not let me it is locked saying call my administrator. When I am regular mode I try to press cont alt del and the task manager doesn't pop up. It only allows the task manager to come up on safe mode under administrator. I have downloaded plenty of antivirus scanners. My mcafee isn't working, tried norton not working, pc tools, spyhunter. Some will actually load and scan and when it is like 75% done scanning it just disappears. I have tried manually deleting things but that is too confusing and quite frankly I don't want to delete something that doesn't need to be. I hope someone can help me. For some time my wife's computer has been running real slow - i recently bumped memory up to 3/4 gig, and it did not help much. Before and after i get 'insufficient system resources' and/or 'microsoft is re-allocating ??? memory (is the word virtual?)

i have tried 5 steps - but dss hangs and quits (tell microsoft?) at orafter 'clear temps'. I cleared temps with disk cleaner (microsoft system tools), and ran hijack this without dss. (did not try dss after disk cleaner)

in this email i am putting hijack log first and then panda log - should i have appended panda log? not clear to me from 5 steps.

I appreciate you all out there! thanks: rick berry

OK, I've googled and searched for this as much as I can. I'm a new Windows 7 user. I have a library (Documents) with three folders included. Call them folders A, B, and C. I understand how to set the default save location. Let's say I've set it to Folder A. Now, I want to save a file in *Folder B* by using the convenient Libraries button. Let's further say that Folder B is the location "C:\FolderB". It seems that IF there is a subfolder, say "C:\FolderB\test", I can save it there by clicking Libraries, expanding FolderB, and double clicking on "test". HOWEVER, if C:\FolderB has no subfolders, I can't seem to save there by using Libraries.

That is to say: IF you have a folder in your Library that is not the default save location AND that folder has no subfolders, there's no way to save there by starting from the Libraries button. Is this correct? (If so, it is rather disappointing and seems to undermine the idea of Libraries so I hope I'm missing something...)

A:Saving to a library location that is NOT the default save location

I might be missing your intended idea, but if you name the folder, such as "Test B", then you should be able to save the .ext (if named) to that particular folder by clicking on the "C" drive... wait for it (the drive) to show up, then save.

If you name a .txt file (or another extention) and save it to your desktop, you can also move it to that named folder on "C" drive.

Just curious as to why you want to have different named folders on "C" drive when you can use the Documents folder?

My computers been slow for a while now and after updating the program, SEveral trojans came up in Malwarebytes but when I delete them, the computer goes impossibly slow, taking 10 mins to open a program etc. One of these files is called 'kswuyoo' and is in the ARPCache (Add/Remove program cache, not the other ARP cache). When I delete it the same thing happens. I have a HJT log but can't see anything suspiscious on it (I'm no expert though). Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Below is HJT log:

Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

Hi,
My computer has been running slow, especially when I do a restart, it takes forever to restart. I went into msconfig and disabled what is in startup. Question is what do I need in startup and what can I get rid of? and how do I remove something from startup?
Also what is a good free firewall to use?
Thanks Dano

A:Computer runs faster when I disable what runs in the background?

Here is a good explanation: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
There are certain (and important) items that should run at Startup.

If you are unsure of some of the entries you see listed, this is a great website to research them: http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
It tells you what the process is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.

A good firewall (and free one) is Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Every now and then (every 5 minutes or so) my cursor will turn into the hourglass for a split second, then turn back. I'm assuming this means something is being initiated in the background periodically. Over time, this slows down my computer. At the very least, it makes me lag tremendously in online games for a few seconds (which makes CS and UT2004 pretty much unplayable).

I've tried running the latest AdAware and Spybot: Search and Destroy. Neither solved the problem. These seem like symptoms of generic spyware, but I've still been unable to put an end to it. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

(I'm using windows XP, if that makes any difference)

I have a client with a tricked out Dell xps Studio (6GB memory) who is suffering with very long times to print. Even sending a printer test page from within windows (Vista home premium 64) takes about 30 seconds before the sent notice appears on the screen. The printer is a Epson Stylus Photo1900 (large format printer). No other programs running but background stuff kept to a minimum. I have tried shutting down the spooler and printing direct, but it is slow as well.

I loaded and ran Process Explorer from Sysinternals and the only thing out of the ordinary is the constant opening, running and ending of dllhost.exe. This occurs every few seconds and lasts only for a few seconds.

I know there are discussions in posts elsewhere in the forums of the possible impostor DLLHOST.EXE, and when I left the client's I had set MS Security Essentials to run a full scan to see if it would find anything, but I have not yet been to see the results.

Does anyone else have any ideas on this?

Sometimes it shows as "SYSTEM (F) and other times as a picture of a drive with a question mark over it ans F:\. I have done a check disk and the command prompt "gpupdate /force" as suggested on a site but no luck.

I have looked at other solutions but nothing seems to pertain to my specific problem. Any help will be appreciated. I have attached screenshots.

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove Snap.do and some other unwanted programs.  I managed to get them off, I beleive.  I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me Snap.do was back.  I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked.  Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and Snap.do wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.
I ran malware bytes and nothing too bad was found.  I ran Superantispyware and it reported regcleaner pro, Advanced Sysrem Protector and AppsHat Mobile Apps were installed.  I let the Super antispyware try to remove them and also cleaned out some tracking cookies.  I cehcked programs and the 3 weren't there.  Re-running Super antispyware however keeps reporting they're in my system.
Any ideas?  Was my original removal not successful?  Can these apps hide?

Hello Splungee, this one is a bit tricky. Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic. If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

I tried to run MBAM, Spybot, Spyunter. The programs would not run at all, I would get an error stating I didn't have appropriate permissions. I downloaded the DDS.scr file and tried to execute a scan. The scan screen popped open for about one second and closed....every program that I try to run will either not run at all, or if it does run, it will close a few seconds into the scan then shut down. If I try to run it again, I'll get an error saying I don't have permission to run that file.I have tried online scans from Bitdefender, Microsoft's OneCare, and one more (forgot the name)...but every online scan shuts down the entire browser. I have a network drive mapped to Z:. I can see all the files and folders on it in windows explorer. I can create new folders and files on it and read from it but when I try to copy files to it from my C: drive it says:

"Location is not available - Z:\ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different location."

Why? I can see it right here in windows explorer. It's so annoying and of course it makes me type in my administrator password before it pukes out the error. What can I do to fix this and yes I've rebooted my computer. It has worked in the past all of a sudden it starts doing this? I've disconnected and remapped network drive and rebooted in between doing those too but no change. Any ideas?

I am looking at purchaseing a new scanner. I have several thousand slides and negatives that I am needing to scan and want to find the best equipment for this at a decent price. I've seen some people say the Plustek 7500i SE is a good dedicated scanner. Even the Plustek 7200i SE has a good rating. Is there any that are better or that you might recommend instead. I'm really struggling on what direction to go. A dedicated film scanner is suppose to be better quality but at a much higher price. I've looked up flatbed scanners for under $500 and the CanoScan 8800F seems to have the highest rating and good reviews.
If anyone could point me towards one they like or recommend I would greatly appricaite it.
Like I said I'm getting to the point where I'm getting confused on which direction I should go.
Thank you for your help.

Not sure whether I'm putting this question in the right spot but here goes. I have a laptop running XP. Today when I tried to boot it up it told me my memory had changed and prompted me to press F1 to continue. I did and it started to boot Windows but then gave me message "One of your discs needs to be checked for consistency." I let it go ahead and it went through a 3 stage process -
1) Verifying files - it said complete
2) Verifying indexes - It corrected an error in Index $SII for file 9
3) Verifying security descriptors - On this last check after a while it started multiple messages of the type " Inserting index entry xxxx with ID yyyy into Index $zzz of file 9." There were hundreds of these messages and it just kept going with consecutively increasing numbers. Eventually I stopped it with the OFF button and then tried to reboot, but the same thing happened. Please help somebody. Should I let it just carry on running or am I likely to be losing my hard drive data as it does this check? Thanks, Dave

Dell Dimension E510 running Windows XP (service pack 3).

I bought this desktop computer about a week ago off of Craigslist. I was running late that day so I didnt get to ask much more than I already stated. When I used it the first week it was slow but tolerable. As the days passed the speed slowed even more to programs not even responding. I also would like to erase all the user information and settings so I can start new with a decent working PC. My knowledge in computer software and program procedures etc. Just let me know if you need more specific information.

A:Windows XP runs slow...if it runs at all!

If you bought that Dell Dimension E510 desktop from Craig's List and it still contains all the programs and "debris" and issues from its previous owner, you need to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP SP3 and get a fresh start with it.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on one of the stickers?

What's the complete version of Windows XP that's on the Microsoft Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker that has the product key?

Were you given any discs with that desktop?

I have two external hard drives, both in Vantec NexStar3 USB enclosures. The older 750 GB WDC Green drive runs HOT to the touch, the 4 TB, and the 2 TB before that, run pretty warm but never hot.

Why might this be, and would that much heat cause earlier than necessary drive failure?

A:WDC Green: 750 GB runs Hot, 4 TB runs Cool ???

Hi there,

The WD Green drives should be working up to 60 degrees Celsius, which could feel really hot to the touch. The older model of the drive might be working on higher temperatures that the newer, but should not exceed those 60 degrees. I advise you install some monitoring software to determinate the exact working temperature. If you have the option, check if the drive is running hot when used without the enclosure.
If a drive works hotter than expected, this may be an indicator of an ongoing issue and, yes, might lead to an unexpected drive failure. My advice: measure the exact temperature and do regular backups.
In the links below you will find the spec sheets of the different WD Green models, where you can check temperatures:

I am using XP cant use both devices together. device mgr recognizes just one of them. Get device mgr. code 38 "windows cant load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory". The windows trouble shooter doesn' help solve this particular problem. I can load either scanner singularly and it does not give error code 38 and works fine unless I try to load both scanners. I have loaded latest xp drivers for each of these USB scanners. Does any have a fix for this problem. Your help would be appreciated.
Thanks edjal

Hi,

In Windows 8.1 (and as far as I can remember in all previous Windows versions) I used to be able to do the following:
In Windows Explorer: Open a .jpg file from anywhere in my file system, by right mouse clicking and choosing "edit"After editing: "Save as" (press F12) and save the edited file IN ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION but under a different name.
Now, in Windows 10, the situation is different:
In Windows Explorer I open a .jpg file from anywhere in my file system by right mouse clicking and choosing "edit"After editing: "Save as" (F12) opens a dialogue box that suggests I save the file, NOT in its original location, but in a location that is either the default "pictures" directory or the directory that was previously used as a "save as" location in Paint (these locations are stored in the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint\Recent File List")

Now I'd like very much to get the old, Windows 8 type situation back because this does not work for me! It's very inconvenient to have to scroll and click my way through the "save as" dialogue box until I finally find the directory where the edited file was stored in the first place! Why o why does Windows not remember this location?
I've searched through the internet but it seems nobody else has this problem. I've searched the registry for the word "paint" but was not able to find a setting t... Read more

A:MS Paint "Save as" location is NOT the file source location

Hello hvaleton Welcome to the Ten Forums!

I just right clicked on an image file here and chose the Edit option and the "save as" to save the jpeg file with the word "duplicate" added into the file name to save it in the original location. You may want to try starting with the Paint app first you find in the Start>AllApps>Windows Accessories list and then simply choose the open option in the file menu to browse to and select the intended file. You can also see that pinned to the Start menu as well as to the main taskbar with a fast right click.

If your copy of 10 was an upgrade install that might explain the problem you are seeing since the upgrade install tends to not see everything go on fully at times. The word "Buggy" tends to fit the bill for that type of install and not specific to 10 only but every version coming up from Legacy to 9x onto ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and now 10.

The one thing favored with having the Windows Photo Viewer restored replaced by Photos in 10 is that once you have any image or photo in view you can simply to upto the menu and select the "Make a copy" option and browse to the location you want the new copy to be created and saved to on the spot.

You just can't alter things like you can with MS Paint or the favorite for many 3rd party free image editing program known as PaintNet. Besides painting over and erasing things if not drawing lines under and around objects in an image you can add ne... Read more

Hi there

Just looking for some advice on an issue I am having at work.

A user cannot scan with the above scanner. They are getting the following error.

Scanner Status - 0 Error Number =1116 Twain Data Source Not Found Please Reinstall Scanner Software.

The Scanner is detected in Device Manager (No errors next to it)

I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled but the user gets the same issue.

I have added them as a local admin and once the software is installed I have logged on as the user. It detects that new hardware has been found and continues with the install but then they get the same issue.

Another user can log on to the machine and it works fine!

I have reseated the scanner to force it to pick up the connection but SAME ISSUE!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

User is on Windows 2000

Thanks

Currently I use Microsoft Security essentials as my "active monitoring" - What i'm looking for is any virus scanners that you find work well? (I only like "free" scanners.)

Consider I'm not seeking an active "monitor" that runs as a windows process. What I'm looking for is a "file scanner" that scans designated folders/drives.

Now adays, if you're paying attention, the quantity of spyware/Trojans/active x viruses is at an all time high. It seems like I get infected going to common websites even. I am looking to expand my assemblage of file scanners. In my opinion, the more, the better. (Sometimes I like to scan my drives with 3+ virus scanners. I'd like even more.)

I currently use:

Malwarebytes - Sweet secondary scanner. Doesn't run as a process (is just a scanner) and isn't "active monitoring" Perfect!

clam - Sweet scanner I actually got lastnight. Takes a long time, and doesn't clean files? (that's fine, but not as good as I hoped)

Super Anti Spyware - sweet spyware scanner

Online Virus Scanners - Housecall - Housecall is the best online scanner I've found and actually cleans the files for FREE. (do you guys know any other good online files scanners?)

Can you guys reccommend any additional file scanners that scan windows drives/files? Please remember, I don't want it to actively manage/monitor! (I USE MSE FOR THIS) I want it to be a secondary scanner that scans u... Read more

According to Windows XP For Dummies from year 2002, any scanner can be used with Windows XP because of some basic WIA which permits scanners to be used without being installed. Since I have an older scanner which worked well on another Windows XP computer on which the scanner was installed, I figured I could follow the instructions in that Dummies book to use the same scanner in Windows XP on a different computer. So I began to try.Instructions began like this:To use the Scanner and Cameria Wizard,1. Click Start --> Control Panel2. Click Printers and Other Hardware, click Scanners and Cameras...BUT THERE WAS NO CORRESPONDING WINDOW PRESENT. THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SCANNERS AND CAMERAS WINDOW, BUT NONE THERE.I could then not follow any further instructions.I also found in Control Panel, an item called Scanners And Cameras, so I opened this to see if there were selections which I could follow according to the Dummies book. There was only an "install hardware" item inside. Also, somewhere along the attempted process, Windows invited me to look for drivers to install, but I was not sure if that fit my purposes or not. Would that path bring in the WIA software which Windows XP is expected to already have? What am I missing here? Windows XP is supposed to have some WIA software allowing basic features of any scanner to be used, but I could not find the instructions path to make use of the scanner. The scanner was also plugged in while I tried the process... Read more

Hi expert types. I have a canon scanner/printer MX320 and I just hooked it up to a new laptop. I installed the disc and it installed everything for the mx320, but when I try to scan something I get an error code from scangear that says turn off scanner error in scanner code 2,148,0 . What should I do? My dell came with Windows 8, so I figured posting here was the right place....I've tried to see if anyone else has had this problem prior to me but every site I go to just has nada. I've already tried unplugging everything, and also pressing the scan function on the actual scanner. (which is pretty much the only advice anyone had on the other sites I went to). Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I really can't afford to buy a new scanner right now and I need it for work.

Windows 8, of course; Brother MFC-7460DN Laser Printer. Paperport 14. Nothing I do will allow me to scan from that printer in Windows 8! However, I can print just fine.

Windows 7 machine, Brother MFC-7460DN Laser Printer. Paperport 14. Everything works just fine and dandy. I double checked just a little while ago, and scanning went off without a hitch.

The only difference between Paperport on the Win 7 machine and the Win 8 machine is that I bought Paperport 14 for the Win 8 machine and while waiting for it to arrive, I downloaded and installed the trial version.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Paperport and the printer multiple times, in the Brother Utilities I clicked on and installed the Scanner Utility and still no joy!

Here's a snip of the Installation Diagnostics. The Scanner (Driver) Port looks hinky to me, but what do I know?

And, yes, I could use my Brother MFC-J825 for scanning, but that would be a pain because of the printer's location. Or, I could run into another room and use the J5910, but that would be even more inconvenient. 'Sides, I hate to have something that just won't work in Windows 8.

Bottom line is that it does seem to be a Windows 8 issue, because when I check, Windows says it's all good. And it ain't!

I would very much appreciate any help I can get with this, since I'm flummoxed so far. Thanks in advance.

A:No Scanner - The default scanner is not attached

Hi Wynonna,

I sense that you are usually very well versed in repairing your own issues so I doubt that I can help you; however, lacking any response to your issue, I will throw in "my2cents":

Please do not take offense to any of my suggestions if they sound too basic:

So, I assume you have already downloaded and tried the latest drivers from Brother?
Brother: MFC-7460DN: Downloads: United States

Can I also assume you are using it via a direct USB connection and it is not set up as part of a network and it is not wireless?

If so, can I assume you have applied the latest firmware update (9/6/2013)?

I have bought an Epson Perfection 1200S scanner, second hand. I hoped to plug it into the USB of my PC but only after buying it did I see that the 1200U model is for USB and the handbook for this 1200S model says that unless my PC has an SCSI board, I need to install one. The scanner came with an interface board but I am not confident about opening my PC to install it.

The scanner also came with a Microtech USB-SCSI-DB25B, which is not part of the Epson package but I guess is an extra that the seller threw in. It has a USB prong on one end that could go into my PC, and the other end would fit the cable that attaches to the scanner.

Can I install the scanner without using the SCSI board?

A:Solved: Can my SCSI scanner run as a USB scanner?

From the looks of it the Microtech USB-SCSI-DB25B is a usb to scsi converter so you should be able to plug it into the USB port and have it work. Seems like it should be Microtech USB-SCSI-DB25B to SCSI cable to scanner.

While Microtech USB-SCSI-DB25B did not give me too many things to look up... maybe you can provide a picture of this unit to verify....

either that or verify its something like this -
