Q: VIRUS MAKING MY COMPUTER ALMOST UN-USABLE (if that;s a word)! HELP!

latley i was dwnloading some stuff and i downloaded a key generator which i think began this whole mess. I was suddenly overwhelmed with a heap of viruses. I thought i got rid of them all but one must have hidden somewhere cose everytym i connect to the internet it opens up pop ups to download all this virus protection stuff. At one point i left the comp and when i got back there were 51 internet explorers open all at bestmanage.org. ALso sometimes a random virus would pop up and my avg would detect a threat. Even when i disconnect my comp frm the net, every 15 mins or so a message comes up saying the we page i requested could not be opened offline. However i never requested a webpage! I downloaded hijackthis and heres my log:

I won't go into the many reasons why I have had to take out an old computer and start using it again. I don't want to cry.

Needless to say - its urgent.

It's a SONY VAIO purchased around 2005. IT runs Windows XP and I have installed and updated Mozilla Firefox, which is the only browser I am really willing to run.

THere is a lot of lag going on both during the loading process and while I am trying to work. This does not help my current situation.

I have been helped before by techguy and have even made a few donations over the years. I have even learned a lot (but retained only a small portion). I have gone back over a couple of posts and tried to use some of the advice posted there. However, much of it was particular to the computer I was using at the time and not applicable to this one.

I would greatly appreciate any help and advice. I do not KNOW that the computer is malware ridden or infected in any way - so help identifying the problems would also be welcome.

What should I do first?

Hi all,

I recently got a base-model Asus G750JS with Win 8.1 and bought a separate SSD with the intent of migrating the original setup onto the new disk. I read up on how to migrate and opted to go with AOMEI Partition Assistant as my partition cloning tool. I've copied all of the partitions to the new disc, and Windows is bootable and works as desired, but the cloned recovery and restore partitions do not. Since the computer did not come with a recovery DVD or even a serial number for the Windows, I'd like to find a way of keeping these recovery/restore partitions in place should anything happen to my OS in the future.

I encountered no errors when cloning these partitions onto the SSD, but Windows does not recognize them when I try to explore options like "System Refresh". If I launch the Windows Recovery Media Creator tool from control panel, it greys out the option to "Copy the recovery partition" and, when I try to create a new recovery partition, tells me that "Some required files are missing".

I noticed that there were some flags on the original recovery/restore partitions that labeled them as "Restore" type drives, whereas the new cloned partitions are just regular partitions (although I set them to be hidden). Could that be the source of the issue, and if so, how would I set those flags?

Thank you in advance!

A:Making cloned recovery partition usable? (SSD migration)

PS: Here is how my partition table looks now. The SSD is disk 0 and the circled partitions are the clones that are now not being recognized. Disk 1 is the source HDD. You'll notice that the recovery/restore partitions on that one have drive letters and no special flags anymore...that's because I had accidentally deleted them earlier (after the cloning process was successfully completed), and though they've been restored, the flags have not.

At my work we have templates from Word 2003.

When we open them in Word 2007 they doesn´t work as they should.

We have for example a menu like

2 Electronics
2.1 Phones
2.1.1 Mobile phones

When you make an uppdate on the menu the sub-numbers disapear so it is
2 Electronics
Phones
Mobile phones

Also in 2003 you get a menu to the right where you can change in the list not only the types but also the numbering. Is there something like that in 2007?

A:Making Word 2003 templates work in word 2007

A couple of things.

Firstly here is an interactive guide for some of the features in 2003 - 2007. It is useful in some circumstances
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/word/HA100744321033.aspx

In regards to using 2003 templates for 2007 - i noticed that not all things worked in the same way in 2007 especially when it came to printing (things would display differently to how they would print)

I work for a big company and i had to redesign alot of templates. Sorry.

In regards to changing the numbering, you now right click on one of the actual numbers within the document and you can change the numbering from there.

Hope that all makes sense.

Hello,

Have been using WORD 2007.
No problems.

But, I just downloaded and installed Open Office. But I only want to use it for its Spreadsheet. However, it looks like its word processing component has taken over.

Now, my WORD documents are being opened by Open Office which I do not want.

How can I make WORD the Default word processing program (again) ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:Making MS WORD The Default Word Processing Prog. ?

OpenOffice and LIbreOffice acquire all *.docx files. When we trying to open them, it opens through OO or LO. Perhaps this article will help you to disable it and make MS Word as the default one: How to Change the Default Program for Microsoft Word Files?

I have both MS Word (Word 97) and MS Works 8.0 installed. For word processing, I prefer
Word and use Works primarliy for the spreadsheet. However, Works has become
the default word processor and I don't know how. Works opens my Word
documents, and tries to change the format when I save. How can I make Word
the default?

I have tried right-clicking a Word document, and choosing Word and "always
open with this;" now whenver I open a document, I get a message that the
document is already in use by me and would I like to make a copy?

A:Making Word my default word processor

Control Panel > Folder Options > File types (tab) .. and set the system default program for the file type (extension) desired.

To whom it may concern,

I downloaded a program to help me edit some DVD menu's and this Babylon Search function was downloaded with it. It created add-on's and made my computer do things that were not desirable. I uninstalled it but found it to be still lingering on my computer in the add-on sections of browsers. Ever since I downloaded the program and got the "Babylon Search" with it I have found that my computer is running really slow. It also shows up in Internet Explorer when I click to open a new tab. It comes up right away and seems to be mimicking the Google Search layout only it says Babylon in the top right of the screen... Has anyone had any experience with this? Any help would be great. I do appreciate you reading my message.

Jaredi uninstalled any trace of "babylon" in the program list but it is still lingering.

thanks

Hi. Recently I believe that my computer has become enslaved as a bitcoin miner, as it has become SUPER unusually slow all of a sudden. It started 3 days ago when I was simply watching youtube videos and then typing up stuff. All of a sudden my computer would get so slow that minimizing a window took forever, and moving the mouse was virtually impossible. This has never happened before, and my computer is quite powerful so I doubt that it is because of my hardware.

Games that I've played without problems in the past are also now unplayable even in lowest settings, as the FPS drops to 2. My computer wakes itself up from sleep often now, and on start up GPU usage immediately spikes as well as temperature, leading to very loud fan noise. I was recently infected by ZeroAccess rootkit, and although I "fixed" it with the help of this forum, many say that it is impossible to completely remove ZeroAccess, and I believe this is just ZeroAccess coming back (but my computer knowledge is limited).

Attach.txt is attached, and the following is my DDS log:

Well after 2 days I finally got my web browsers working again! i think my java scripts were somehow disabled. Also something interesting that i've noticed, I use an IE based browser called Maxthon, but i also have firefox. I've noticed that under my internet options privacy section, it has the setting on accept all cookies and i would have to change it back to medium. however each time that i open up firefox or probably restart maxthon, it goes back to accept all cookies and I would have to constantly monitor this.

I run windows XP. All my problems started I believe when i somehow contracted tinybar? when i run spybot, it comes up with tinybar.C and some other trojan which has been on my computer forever, i think its called virtumondo or something. i've searched online to try to remove tinybar through my registry or something, but i could never find the files that I was supposed to delete or something.
Also, something is blocking my windows security center for running automatic updates.

I am alright with computers but not super techy. I've downloaded HijackThis from the rules sticky and I hope im posting it correctly:

Hello all, i just made an account here because i need some help.

Lately for the past month about my computer has been making a clicking sound. The sound is EXACTLY the same sound as if you click a folder in lets say my computer on windows 7 and open a folder. the "click" noise. I won't open everything and randomly every so often i will just hear this noise as if i clicked a folder.

I have updated malwarebytes and updated mcafee and i have all the settings to do the fullest scan and i double checked to make sure every bit was being covered.

I thought maybe it was my computer failing at first or my hard drive failing but everything i looked up  didn't show anything at all relating to that noise.

help?

Well, what started out as a simple annoyance quickly worsened.
At first it was just a few pop ups, not being able to access yahoo mail, and a slow computer.
I tried to solve the slow computer part by researching the processes and start up items and going through and deleting or ending ones that were safe to do so. Under the start up items there was a program called "rilihoki." I couldn't find it on the internet other than it not being a good thing. So I clicked it off. I rebooted the computer, and while everything else remained off, it had rechecked itself. So then I decided to try downloading malwarebytes. It won't run though, stating that it couldn't find the specified file. So then I tried downloading something else and went with AVG. It downloaded ok, but wouldn't open and eventually the entire computer froze and had to be turned off. When I turned it back on, I got an error saying it couldn't load c:/windows/system32/rilihoki.dll. Then AVG resident shield popped up showing a long list of files that were infected with the Vundo trojan horse. The list just kept refreshing over and over again with the bottom half of the window not even being completely loaded. I then tried to open AVG but it wouldn't open all the way. Again, the opening page (which only loads half way) would refresh itself over and over again. I ended up running McAffee again, but it didn't find anything. Ad-Aware went through ok, but didn't pick anything u... Read more

I thought this started by opening a link on a news site, but I'm not sure now where it came from. Quick rundown- Was on wifi at work and noticed my computer became VERY slow. After numerous scans with MBAM and SAS, I found quite a few trojans, but even though all programs showed they were destroyed, the problem still continues. I posted a new thread in BC, and had some suggestions, but I'm still infected. Last night, I noticed that my AVG was turned off and I couldn't get it turned back on. Also, any Windows security program was turned off, including Windows Firewall, and I couldn't get it to come back on. I was able to download Avira and Comodo Firewall, but I'm still having issues. Here are the three results after the recommended scans.

I'm trying to make envelopes in Microsoft word. I want to do a lot of the same thing. Basically, we're trying to put our logo and address in the return address place, and leave the delivery address area blank for future use. I was able to kind of do it, but it wastes an envelope each time, and it's a pain in the neck. Is there an easier way?

I go into the tools area, click on letters and mailings, then envelopes. I'm able to put in the return address, but not insert a graphic from our file. I want to set it up to do a lot at one time... any help would be great! Thanks!!

A:Making envelopes in word

To add a little more information, the reason I am getting a second blank, is when I finish editing the envelop, there's a second blank page under the finished envelope. When I try to get rid of it, it reverts the envelope back to a regular word document, not an envelope any more. I know... I'm confusing myself.

I believe that this can be done. First, move your cursor directly above the table, then record the macro. Use the arrows on your keypad and the shift button to select the rows that you want to delete and then point to edit, cut. Select the text the same way and change the formatting. Be sure the macro is saved in the "all active templates and documents file" so that you can use it on other files. Let me know if this works. If it doesn't, then your problem could be a corrupt file.

A few days ago I felt I had some minor virus problems with my Windows 7.  I checked the Microsoft site and found the suggestion that I should use Windows Defender Offline. I downloaded it to my computer and ran the program.  It started scanning my computer immediately and has never stopped since.  No matter what I do, and I haved tried every suggestion I can find on the net, I cannot get my computer to boot. I can't get into anything on that computer. I have tried making recovery disks (I have another good running computer with windows 10) and using the Windows 7 install disk but nothing will work. That computer will not respond to anything. It just goes on, and on scanning with Windows Defender. I shut it down and it comes back on with the usual boot signs but will not respond to any of it no matter what keys I press.  It then goes into Windows is loading files, after that it says Windows is loading.  But windows does not load in the normal way.  Instead it reverts to Windows Defender Scanning and I cannot find a way to stop that.  Can anyone please give me any helpful ideas as to how I might correct this situation? I would be most appreciative of any advice anyone can offer.

Probably just by renaming your normal.dot file, but here's all the steps in case renaming normal.dot isn't enough. Just start with Step 3 of Troubleshooting Word:

My mother's friend is having a problem with Word, it appears to be making her documents read only files, seemingly without cause, stopping her saving changes.
She has Windows 2000.

I have a PC that is hanging when opening any document in Word, this has started happening since i installed the Adobe Distiller application.

This is a known problem and is detailed in MS Knowledgebase article 324043. I followed the instructions and installed the updates however this did not solve the issue.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I want to create a mini-Lyrics book.
I want to print the book so each 8.5 x 11 paper will have 4 sections.
Each section will contain 1 Title, 1 Artist and 1 Song Lyrics.

I would like to store the data in XML (easiest format to update).
Excel and Access are too cumbersome.
So it will look something like this..

<song>
<title>Under The Sea</title>
<artist>A-Teens</artist>
<lyrics>The seaweed is always greener,
In somebody else’s lake.
..</lyrics>
</song>

<song>
<title>..</title>
<artist>..</artist>
<lyrics>..</lyrics>
</song>

<song>
<title>..</title>
<artist>..</artist>
<lyrics>..</lyrics>
</song>

Now how would I make Word to read this in,
and force it into my template of 4 Songs per page?
Can Mail Merge do it?
I would like to avoid VBA coding if possible
as I want to make this simple and painless.

Thanks!

Hello PrinceTuna, and welcome to Seven Forums.

When you restart the computer, how much memory does it show you having in the boot screen or in BIOS?

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have the Maximum memory box unchecked in the Boot tab of msconfig.

I need to make study cards (flash cards) using Word 2000 with the question on one side and the response on the other. I think I can do this by using the “Envelopes and Labels” option under the “Tools” menu, but I’m not sure if this is the best and/or only way?

I’ll have to make in excess of 100 cards (most likely 3 X 5...I haven’t bought the card stock yet). Is there an automated way to do this? Do I just make one file with all of the questions and another with all of the answers and then print the first file, reload the cards and print the second file on the opposite side?

I’m really a novice at Word so any help would be greatly appreciated. If there are any tutorials on line that you know of, feel free to point me to one of those.

Thanks in advance!

McStagger

A:Word 2000 - Making Flash Cards?

Maybe you could use a Word (table) document as the basis for a mailmerge. The table could have 2 columns, column1 = questions, column2 = answers. So you'd merge first using the first column and run the cards thru the printer, then again using the second column and run the cards thru other-side-up.

There's a default index card size (4 x 6 in.) via File -- Page Setup. Mailmerge in 2000 is far more straightforward than in later versions, IIRC -- see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/index.htm for details.

I'm making a guide for a friend (he lives in another state, and dont want to waste talking minutes on the phone) , and I want to make a table of contents so he can click where he wants. The only problem is I dont know how to make it that way. Any help is appreciated. If you're are confused on what I'm talking about I will try to explain it more to ur specifications.

A:Making a Table of Contents for a Word File

To do this depends on if you have got office 2003 or office 2007 Office 2003
Office 2003

Make sure you have got the formatting toolbar at the top. to do this go to

View > Toolbars

And make sure that formatting is ticked. Then you want to highlight the Document title with the curser and on the formatting toolbar (one with font and size settings) click the down arrow on the drop down menu to select the style. The Style menu is the one with &#8220;Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 etc. Select heading 1 for the title. Then for the sub headings highlight them and select heading 2.

After you have gone this for all the headings

· On the Insert menu, point to Reference, and click Index and Tables.
· Click the Table of Contents tab.
· To use one of the available designs, click a design in the Formats box.
· Select any other table of contents options you want.

Office 2007

I have a computer with Windows XP Service Pack 1 on it and a Samsung SP4011 HDD.

Recently, the Keyboard and mouse simply do not work.

While the computer is booting up, they work, such as the lights come on, and I can go into the Bios setup, ect.

However, after the "beep" occurs on boot up, the lights turn off and neither of them work at all.

I have tried Windows XP CD and Windows XP Boot disks, but once Im in the setup menus, the keyboard and mouse do not work.

I also tried Powermax to simply do a format, but I get a "Cannot Load DOS!" message when the diskette is being loaded.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hello,

This is my first time posting here. I have a serious problem with my computer. When I originally got it back in 2008 with windows vista it froze quite a bit. This past December I upgrade to Windows 7 and things seemed better. I did get the occasional BSOD, but it is nothing like now.

In the last week I have gotten at least a dozen BSOD messages, all 7F errors. The message error code looks like this: "Stop: 0X0000007F (0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000080050031, 0x00000000000006F8, 0XFFFFF80002ED7BD0). However, the last six digits after "0XFFFFFF800002" are always a little different.

I have read it is usually hardware related. But my Pc is barely two years old and I did all the scans of my hardware and everything passed. I have not changed anything about my computer recently except that I switched from connecting to the internet wirelessly to using an ethernet connection.

The error comes up very randomly it seems. At first, it was when I was playing Halo & Halo 2 pc. So I checked on my CD-Rom drives. Then, it started doing it while using Ms Word or just browsing the web. I tried a system restore to remove the lasted Windows updates but it failed.

Here are the specs your BSOD thread ask for:

I'm really not sure what the problem is or what started it, but my computer started getting this pop-up telling me to download Antivirus XP 2008. The pop-up stays above everything else and I have to click a small portion of text to get it to go away, but it just comes back in a matter of minutes.

My wallpaper has been replaced with a "Windows Security Message" telling me that there's spyware on my computer (I tried replacing it with my old wallpaper, but it just came back). I ran AVG and it did find trojans, but deleting them didn't seem to do anything. I have Ad-Aware, but it's severely outdated and I just get an error every time I try to install new updates. I can't use Google; whenever I click on a result it just opens a new tab with some completely irrelevant page, such as YellowPages or Monster. I also got my first blue screen of death I've ever gotten on my computer (was scanning with AVG at the time), the error being:

PANIC_STACK_SWITCH

Right after that the screen went pink, and then I got ANOTHER blue screen, and afterward it did the same thing one more time. The errors were "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" respectively.

I'm having to post this on the downstairs computer because I couldn't access this site on my own. If someone could please give me some help, I would be very grateful. Here's my HJT log:

Hi all,
For some reason my Vista machine takes 18 minutes from when the desktop arrears to when it can actually be used. Then all seems good. During that 18 minutes you can open the Windows Explorer but not move files, the ADSL connection and the data connection to the other computer is off, and AVG has no services running. Then it comes good and runs fine. All the things that I tried to do in that time happen.
Where do I start trying to solve this? The only thing I did recently was install Open Office.
Cheers

Hey guys. I'm working on the computer of a friend of mine right now. It seems to have several problems with malware and viruses, though I don't know exactly which ones. I scanned with Malwarebytes and quarantined a bunch of files. Subsequent scans with Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, and Avast say there is nothing wrong, but I know this isn't true. Firefox and Google Chrome have both been hijacked and I can only really browse the net now with Opera. There are constant fake security notifications the moment either of those browsers are opened. There are also many unwanted browser add-ons installed to them.

I've pasted in the information from the DDS file, and attached the attach.txt file (EDIT: I guess I wasn't supposed to add this. But the actual program gave conflicting information) to this post. Any help is appreciated here guys.

Hey,

I have rotated some pages to landscape in my document however when it prints off it makes the header too big. Everything is proportionately correct, however it is as if when printing it is leaving a gap above the header (or at the top of the header) for the section break. This is now pushing my footer and bottom of page border off the printed version. Everything looks correct in normal view and print preview of the document. Using Word 2007.

Anyone any idea's on how to fix this?

I am a medical transcriptionist. I have hundreds of auto corrects on my current computer with Windows XP Word 2002 on it. I am needing to, if possible, copy the auto corrects from Word 2002 to another computer with Windows XP Word 2003.

I also have hundred of words that I have added to spell check that it would be great if I could copy those as well.

I do have a flash drive that I can save these to.

Can someone please help me in terminology and steps that a computer dummy can understand?

Thanking you in advance.

I made the Easy Transfer using the ET cable yesterday. The files and setting of my old Windows 7 computer are now in my new Windows 7 computer. I have Microsoft Word 2013 on my new computer but it's empty. How can I get the documents from Word 2003 on my old computer to the new one?

I also have a lot of documents on my Works version 9 on the old computer. Can I transfer these to Word 2013? I suppose I could do it all manually but I'm hoping that someone knows of a trick to do the job fast.

A:New Windows 7 computer - how do I transfer old Word to Word 2013?

Word does not contain any documents which could be moved. I assume you are talking about the list of recent documents, shown either when Word is run (1st screenshot below) or later if File > Open is selected (2nd screenshot).

Recent Documents when Word 2013 is launched:
Recent Documents when user selects File > Open:
As Word saves by default to your personal Documents folder, if Easy Transfer had no issues they should already be in Documents folder under your personal user account folder (default location C:\Users\Your_Username).

If you are using the Windows Libraries, you can also find them from Libraries > Documents.

The Recent Documents list populates as you go; you need first open a document in Word on your new computer for it to appear on the list. The same with your Works files.

I am knee deep in writting up my final dissertation and need some help.

I need to number my pages but not from the first page. I looked online and it said I should have an option to number pages from the page I was on but that was not the case.

I then read that you can insert an header and the page will be numbered from there, again I could not get this to work.

I know in word 2007 you can generate a contents page that will show the page number of all my subsections and headings but I have no clue how to do this and until I get the page numbers working I cannot do it anyway.

If anyone can help me please reply, I don't want to do my usualy trick of having two documents, one the body of the work and the other all the pages that are not numbered because it will take for ever at this point.

Hello Tech Support,

First of all, thanks for looking at my thread.

For a few days now, I have been having trouble with my browser (I use Firefox, but I also have Internet Explorer and it has the same problem).
Whenever I try to start it, the mouse icon shows that it's loading, but then changes to the normal mouse icon and my browser never appears.
After a random ammount of time of continuous trying, it works again for once.
When it works again, the layout suddenly has changed to a more old-fashioned type.

I noticed that Windows Explorer and many other programs also suffer from this, sometimes when I open f.i Control Panel it leaves a blank page and says 'not responding'.

I have tried re-installing Firefox and restoring my system to an earlier date, but to no avail.

Honesty obliges me to tell I have downloaded porn over Vuze and I suspect it has something to do with that

I have read and followed the instructions, but when I tried to run Gmer.exe I got a blue screen and decided not to do it again. The DDS is below and the Attach is attached.

Thanks in advance for your help! It is much appreciated.

Best regards,

Guus Evers.

PS: I have made a screenshot of what my AVG scan says are corrupted files and can post it if wanted.
PPS: If I have done anything wrong, please tell me and I'll try to fix it. This problem is driving me crazy.

A:Possible virus making programs not respond

Getting more problematic now...internet now never works, except immediatly on startup (I suspect because I've deleted the Run list in regedit), then it still goes not responding pretty fast. Everything is much slower and eventually goes not responding or doesn't open at all, Windows Services constantly breaks down, my computer freezes regularly, if I start up in safe mode, it freezes before starting windows. One time it started up to a windows with no background, an old layout and apparantly none of my programs installed.

My head has been spinning all day yesterday. Never have I had anything happen like this before. On my laptop, out of no where, my files became stuck on read-only. From program files to blank text documents, everything is write-protected. I figured my hard drive might be failing so I backed up files to another computer. Now that computer has everything as read-only! On both computers, it takes Windows Explorer 3 seconds or more to open a folder. Both computers are real slow, and I can't do anything from installing a program to deleting a empty folder! It's almost like a medical condition that spreads when copying a file from one computer to next! I believe my files are almost permently virus seeds! Afraid to do anything else after bricking two computers running Windows 7 Ultimate. First computer is an Asus Laptop (X55U). The second computer is an HP Compaq desktop (RE471AA).
Update: Avast is detecting malware. I will update this thread as both computers are running boot-time
scans.

Update 2: Avast had detected something on my backup folder on the desktop which is C:\Users\public\Rhettster. Check the image for more information.

Update 3: Avast finished on the desktop. Read-only problems still persist. I'm not sure what to do. Windows had just given me the biggest hint to what this problem is from. If you look at the pop up in the image, Windows is telling me I do not have permission from the system. I believe that the permissions are corrupted badly. Not sure how I could... Read more

You need to work with someone at a dedicated malware removal site.

Follow directions at any of the following sites. The folks there are dedicated to malware removal and will be able to help you determine if your system is infected and if so how to clean it up. They require that you register but they are all free. Also be patient as they are usually very busy:

Hello

I'm new to new to this forum and would like some help with my HP Pavilion DV5-1005AX laptop. Recently the screen has started to flicker up a gray screen briefly then it'll stop but it is a very regular flicker. My friend and i think it could be a virus, although none of my virus scanners have picked up on the infection. i keep the scanners up-to-date, unless the virus has blocked access to the upgrades. i am using CIS and Spybot.

CIS will occasionally pick up on a supiciuos file but it will only detect it and will not remove or quarantine them. i have read the comodo forum about that particular file and how to get rid of it. although that was unsucessful, and it did not mention anything about the screen flickering.

What should i do?
Help..

Thanks

Hello,I was previously infected with a wdmaud.sys type of malware, as indicated in this thread:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/216774/can-anyone-confirm-removal-of-nasty-wdmaudsys-virus/After removing the offending malware and following instructions to close security holes, I've run MAM, Kapersky and Avast sweeps of the system, which all came up clean.Yet something from my PC is still making FTP attempts into my web host on a repeated basis. Since it's using the old password it results in my IP address being blacklisted as a result of too many failed attempts. This happens at erratic intervals and despite constant AV scans, I still cannot nail down where these FTP attempts are coming from. All I know is that they began occurring at the same time my PC was infected with the malware, so I can only surmise that this is a remaining relic of the virus that still has not been removed. The logs from the server indicating the failed FTP attempts look like this (IP address changed for privacy):LayerFTPd [6521] 55.555.55.555 [03/May/2009:19:19:20 -0400] "PASS (hidden)" 530LayerFTPd [6521] 55.555.55.555 [03/May/2009:19:19:20 -0400] "USER johnsmith" 331Here is the DDS log:DDS (Ver_09-03-16.01) - NTFSx86 Run by John Smith at 12:29:59.01 on Mon 05/04/2009Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.11 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_13Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.1024.107 [GMT -4:00]AV: avast! antivirus 4.8.1335 [VPS 090504-0] *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated)FW: ... Here is what I posted in my original thread:

The other day I was browsing a streaming site and an Avast message popped up saying it blocked an attempted infection. After this Windows Update wanted to restart my computer. This happened twice with seemingly no update taking place as there was no message being displayed during shut down and start up. A third time Windows Update wanted to restart my computer and again I obliged but when the computer was shutting down the Update text being displayed was unfamiliar. After I was able to use the computer again I checked the Windows Update history and everything seemed legit. It was displaying a number of failed and successful updates going back weeks but the times for the updates I suspected might be virus related appeared to be from Windows after all.

So my next step was to start scanning my computer. I did several full system scans with Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot S&D and nothing malicious showed up with any of them. I was still worried though because my internet was going very slow which was strange. I use my computer to play poker and sometimes for banking so I don't really want to take any chances so I decided to take it to a local computer shop to have it reformatted. My question is when I get the computer back should I do anything to make sure it's clean? I will never surf a website I don't trust again so hopefully the chances of being infected in the future are nil. As far as system specs go I ru... Read more

I have 4gb pendrive it is infected with some virus which is making it write protected & unable to use it.I am unable to format it so far i have to tried different things:
1.Tried formatting it on linux.
2.Tried different tools like neo9,hddformatter,jetflash,hpusbtool & a few more.
3.There is another way of changing registry values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro\StorageDevicePolicies but i am unable to find that registry key (using win7 64bit ultimate).
4.Tried antivirus it detects the threat but unable to clear it out.
5.Tried cmd & then a variety of methods to format/partition but no use.
6.Also tried computer management with same message "the drive is write protected".

Now i have run out of options but i am amazed how none of the above methods have worked, already spent 2 hours searching for a solution but unable to find one.
Please someone help me i want my pen drive back.

A:Virus on pen drive making it write protected

A bit difficult for me to fathom this being a virus issue if even formatting it in linux isn't possible. Are you sure it's not as simple as a lock switch toggled on?

Last week, I was having problems with my Zone Alarm not letting AVG Antivirus software update. So I was told to install Avira AntiVir instead. After totally uninstalling and reinstalling Zone Alarm I was able to get Avira to update. But now I cannot get Spybot or Spyware Blaster to update. I have tried to add them manually into allowed programs in Zone Alarm and they just won't show up.

Tonight, the Avira Guard found 3 malware programs (TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen) in the Temp folder. I told the Guard to delete these files. I ran a scan of the computer on Bitdefender and nothing showed up. The Zone Alarm on this computer won't allow me to update a few programs. The Zone Alarm on one of the other computers keeps losing it's ip addresses to network to the other computers. Are these problems related?

Here is my HJT log:

A:Virus making Zone Alarm go crazy

Oh now I really messed it up. I uninstalled ZA with the intent to just re-install it again. Only when I went to reinstall it, it couldn't saying it needed true vector and that I should close it down and restart the installation. True vector wasn't among the system processes. I panicked and reverted the drive using system restore. There was only one point to restore to and that was at 6:30 this morning. I did and now it is on the endless search trying to get ZA to open. The cursor just keeps alternating between and arrow and an hour glass.

What can I do?

Alright, so I'm on a budget, and I'm trying to make an affordable computer for 500 dollars. Here is what I plan to buy.

Internal
RAM

CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 675 (PC2 5400)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145539

I bought this because corsair is a trusted brand, and has good timings. I could of gotten the other one for 3 dollars cheaper, but this one has heat spreaders, which drew me in because it would help. I figure 1 GB is enough for now, and I'll buy new ones when needed.
Cost - $79.00 + Free Shipping = Subtotal - $79.00

Graphics Card

PNY VCG7300GXPB GeForce 7300GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814133172

Since this does happen to be a budget computer, I picked out an entry level graphics card. This graphics card can handle the games that I plan to play, since I don't plan to do any heavy duty gaming. It can handle Guild Wars, WoW, Vista, CS:S, and hopefully Spore. That means I'm all set. SLI Compatible, so I can boost it's performance.
Cost - $76.99 + $5.64 = $82.63 + $79.00 = $161.63

Power Supply

Rosewill RP550V2-S-SL 550W SLI Ready-ATX 12V V2.01 Power Supply 115/230 V CSA,UL,TUV
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817182031

This is a good 550watt power supply with a nice LED fan. Reviews say it's a nice quality, and Rosewill is a trusted brand.
Cost - $59.99 + $8.02 = $68.01 + $161... Read more

No SLI wont slow down your GFX card, you dont know what your talking about also a 7300GT is slow to start so good luck with that.

Hi, I bought a custom built desktop for just normal computing off of Craigslist. For 140$ I couldn't go wrong and he showed me everything worked. It worked for a month when I took it home but when I turned it on today it says "Reboot and select proper boot device." I checked online and it said just select the right place in the bios were window 7 is installed. I did that because the guy told it me it was on the floppy disk. I selected it and it still keeps giving me the same error. Please help because I am so fed up with this thing. Specs are
Motherboard: Asus M3N78-VM
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
HDD: 1 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
320GB
(Sorry if the specs look weird I'm a computer noob)

Hey all, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Im going to be making a new computer...
I am thinking of:

Motherboard with 800FSB
Either high 2.0 p4 processor, or a +3000 Athlon...
512 400mhz
128 vid card

I was thinking that would be a good start to the computer right?

Which is, not necessarily better, but more efficient for gaming: a p4, or an Athlon processor?

thanks ~n8

Personally, I would go with intel's new dual core processors (nice cheap dual core) even though i bought an AMD for myself (for gaming). You can get some pretty cheap reliable mobo's from newegg or zipzoom, and get a good productivity/gaming pc for under 700 (or less if you cut accessories). Although if you don't want dual core, just go with a HT P4. Hope that helps.

I have been thinking about making a decent laptop as a fun activity to pass the time.
I was hoping the good people of Seven forums could tell me where and what to get the best computer parts from at a decent price.
My budget is $300.
Here are the specs of my preference:
2.00 Ghz processor.
150-200 Gigabyte internal hard drive (2.5 inch for laptops, right).
3-4 Gigabytes of RAM.
15 inch LCD display if possible.
A decent video card at a good price.
I'm counting on you tech experts.
Thank you for your time!
Please feel free to make any suggestions, tips on how to make a laptop are appreciated.

Hi there
installed W7 Enterprise on a netbook equipped with 4GB RAM. Before installing ANY updates / drivers etc I noticed that on W7 X-64 the computer showed 3.75GB of Ram was useable. On the X-86 version at the same stage of installation it showed that 2.75 GB of Ram was useable.

Any Gurus out there -- why is x-86 saying to me it has less memory over than the X-64 system -- computer hasn't changed in the slightest -- this was immediately after install and before any hardware specific drivers etc were installed.

Cheers
jimbo

A:same computer x-64 3.75GB Usable x-86 2.75GB useable

64 but version of windows can use 4gb or more of ram the 32 (86) bit version cannot. That is why you r seeing a big difference in allotted ram.

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)
Running:
HP dv6 Notebook Pc
Intel - i7 - 2630QM CPU @ 2.00Ghz
8GB ram - 64 bit operating system
Windows 7 Home Premium

thanks so much

Okay, so my dad's laptop managed to pick up some kind of virus, AntiSpyCheck, and now every time he starts up his laptop it starts a virus scan (it's obviously fake, just trying to con him into buying the so-called full product). After it pops up, he's got about a minute before the screen goes blank and he can't do anything save for turning the laptop off.

He has important things on the hard drive so reformatting at this point is not really an option. He's been trying to close it using Task Manager but no such luck so far, he can't get it to shut down before the whole thing crashes. If you've had experience with the same virus you probably have a better idea of how to deal with it, or maybe you can explain how to get into safe mode and get rid of it from there? Any suggestions would be appreciated, really.

Thanks!

It has done it for a few days now and I can no longer just ignore that stupid sound
Fragmentation level is 1% and 11%
Is there any way to fix this or should I just buy a new hard disk?

A:Harddisk making virus scanning sounds, all the time.

I don't have a solution but when the issue is fixed i suggest getting windows 7 SP1

I've got a Dell Inspiron 530 with Windows XP. It's less than a year old. Over the last couple of months it's been making a buzzing/clicking sound on and off every so often. The sound would only last a few minutes then stop. Earlier today it started making this noise and it's been going on all day. I shut the computer off and gave it a few hours rest earlier, but it started right back up after turning it on. It also seems to be running slower than normal lately (pages seem to freeze up for a few seconds especially when I'm browsing more than one internet page). I'm running AVG and Zone Alarm. Sorry if this seems vague but I'm not the most computer literate person.

Ok here it goes, I think something is going out in my computer. I think that it is either the hard drive or power supply. For about the last week every once in awhile the computer will make a noise like its not getting any power then power again. The best way to describe what is happening is to think of a big main frame computer and when you turn it on you can hear the energy being sucked out of the wires (know what I mean?). So yesterday I turned it off because it usually runs 24/7 and didn't want anything to happen, well tonight I turn it back on and it says that something is corrupt with the registery. Windows 98 was able to fix itself. Yeah i was amazed too. So for now my computer is working but should I back up my hard drive and buy a new one or do you think I should worry about that power supply? Oh and the specs of my computer is "400mhz amd, 128megs ram, 8gig ide drive"

Thanks!

A:Computer Is Making Noise!

Hi

It sounds like a noisy fan to me the best way to check is when it is making the noise find something you can put in the power supply fan to stop it and see if the noise stops, if so change the power supply also take the case off and when it's making the noise look at the cpu fan and see if that is spinning very fast or stuttering

Looks fine, except for hardly any more money you can get a much larger hard drive... Seagate, Western Digital, or Samsung.
It won't really be a gamer.
Double check the Power Supply... 750 Watts for $14.99 is just not right.

I have some questions

My mobo crashed can I still use the parts? (processor, diskdrives, hardrive)

Also I am going to get a Gigabyte GA-7VT600P-RZ ATX AMD Mobo,PNY Verto Geforce FX 5500 128mb DDR AGP Graphics Card,And a AMD Duron 1.8ghz 266mhz FSB socket A processor

I already have a intel 2.7ghz processor but I don't know if I can use it.If I can will someone tell me which one is better so I know what type of mobo to get amd or intel.

A:Hi I'm new to the boards and making my first computer

To answer your first question: How did you crash your motherboard? If it experienced a lightning strike, you could try using the parts but it is unlikely that they will work. If you just screwed up the BIOS, then the parts should still be okay and ready for use.

For your second question: I personally prefer AMD because they are generally faster than the comparable Intel ones, though they do run pretty hot. From the two processors you just listed, the Pentium is the faster one, though you can't use it with the motherboard you listed.

Hope this helps!

Since last night my computer has been making this really weird sound. Kind of like a revving sound. I'm not sure what it is. I have an eMachines computer and this has never happened to me before. Anyone had this experience before and may know whats up with it?

On a side note: I saw the stickied topic about eMachines PSU's, and yes I think I need a new one. My computer crashes (often), and some mild things, and some people and forums have told me to get a new PSU, so anyone know a good PSU brand to get? I'll probably buy one from TrigerDirect or NewEgg, just need to know a good brand.

A:Computer making odd noise

The PCs at the school do the revving thing but then stop 10 seconds later.

On the side note a good company PSU would be OCZ, Antec, Thermaltake, and Enermax. Those should do good. Make sure you get them from newegg.com. They are the best site to buy things from.

My computer just started making beeps and then stops..
it makes short beeps for about 1 to 2 mins then stops then it will start again after some few minutes..
I have removed the RAm and placed it back but still it's making beeps after rebooting..
What might be the cause, any help would be appreciate....

A:Computer making beeps

From what you have describes, it sounds like the same issue I had with a PC last week. It turned out to be a bad video card. I was able to get it to boot once or twice by disconnecting everything including the power cable and then pressing the power button to clear the system's charge, then plugging in just the power cable and turning the system on. Once it started booting normally, I reconnected the monitor so I could see what was happening but as soon as it got past the Windows load screen, they screen went black. We resolved the issue by replacing the video card as we couldn't even get to Safe Mode (and have the keyboard/mouse work) to try reinstalling the drivers. Hope this helps!
