Solved: Internet running slowly, VERY slowly

Q: Solved: Internet running slowly, VERY slowly

Hey,

Recently, I received a message from the windows firewall about a wuaudit.exe and I blocked it. Now, I can barely go to websites or download anything, much less post in this forum. I have used spyware search and destroy which did not remedy the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please help, my computer isn't very useful right now. Here's the deal:

1. My computer keeps on freezing up on me, and I don't even have many programs running. When my computer finally starts up, I log onto windows, and it takes seriously two or three minutes for windows to load; two weeks ago it took 20-30 seconds for windows to load. When windows finally loads, and I click on a program (ie. Internet Explorer or Opera Web Browser), it takes another five to seven minutes for one the programs to appear on the screen, then another minute or two for the program to load. When I close a program, it does one of two things; my computer will freeze, and I'll have to restart it; or, it will take a couple of minutes to close the program. And I'm just working with the basics; Internet explorer, opera, open office, and windows media. I'm trying to add music to my newly added iTunes library, but that's almost impossible.

2. My computer won't shut down. This computer is only seven months old, it's too young for such problems. When I go to shut my computer down, I select the shut down icon from the start menu, and expect my computer to shut down. Rather than shutting down, windows pop up telling me that the programs that I had been running are not responding, and I have the option to wait or end the program. I end the program, and the window comes up again, it's almost like my computer isn't properly responding to its commands. Again ... Read more

Hi. My computer has been running much slower than normal. When you open a new window or even try to select a user from the first screen, it really takes its time. Even once the window is open, you can still hear the wheels turning inside the box like it is really struggling to run its basic operating system. When you type something into a web page text box, there is a lag from when I press the key to when the letter shows up.

I have Windows XP and an AMD processor (I don't know which one).

Thanks
Eric

My internet has started to run slowly lately. And I am not sure why. I cleared out my cache and everthing, but it still goes kind of slow. I use FireFox version 3.03 on Windows Vista Enterprise sp1. If that helps at all.

Hey guys, I'm back again with another problem, I think. Browsing webpages seems to be a little slower than normal and I'm laggin out on Xbox Live. Is there a form of Adware, spyware or malaware that can interfere with my bandwidth? Oh yeah, Norton Antivirus said it fround a trojan today, but was unable to delete it so I felt it was time for another checkup. Heres my log

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Hi guys, I have been having an odd problem with my laptop as of a few days ago. The internet runs very slowly! Sometimes its seemingly time-related, however my brothers computer runs the internet just fine whenever I seem to be lagging. My game runs at 600-900 ms, which is unplayable, and even a stream run at 360p on own3d.tv has lag problems during this internet instability time.

I am running windows xp sp3, with 2.4 ghz and 3gb ram. I am running norton 360 premier edition. Here is my hijack this log

Hi there, I hope this isn't in the wrong board. Feel free to move it if it is!

Well basically...yesterday morning my internet was working fine. Then all of a sudden it started to lag, and took about 3-4 minutes to load up simple webpages.
Other errors include not letting me attach anything to emails, not letting me upload images to webistes (ie Photobucket), not allowing me to publish websites (ie Freewebs) and error messages coming up on instant messengers.

I have scanned my computer twice for viruses. Nothing came up. I've also restarted it, tried downloading other web browsers, as well as resetting my home hub. It doesn't work - the same errors keep coming up, and of course this is very frustrating.
Nothing else is running at the same time, literally just the internet. Everything else on the computer works fine that's not internet based!
I even emptied my temp. internet files & cleared my cookies/favourites. Still nothing.

Haha help please?

[I have tried IE, Firefox, Safari. My internet connection is via an ethernet cable and I have a BT broadband hub.]

Hi there, thanks for viewing this.

Recently, my internet explorer 7 and firefox has been running quite slowly. After googling a bit, I found out that this problem could be caused by the iexplore.exe virus.

Many iexplore.exe was running in the processes tab of the Windows task manager when my internet browsers were not in use. This may have caused the slowness.

I have a logfile of TrendMicro's Hijackthis v2.0.2:

Hello all, first time on here. I arrived home today to a PC I had to hard reset do to it not coming up after hitting a key or moving the mouse. After restarting it could not access the internet, kept saying the problem was the router while the laptop worked fine. I noticed some things came on with startup that did not use to. So i tried msconfig in the run box to fix that and I cannot access that, message says that msconfig cannot be found? Anyway, here is a log and I am not sure what I am looking at so I thought I'd turn to the pros in hopes of some assistance.

I hope someone here can help. I have a router split between 3 computers at home, and although I can access the shared files between each computer, transferring them takes a lot longer than it used to, e.g. copying and pasting a few Mbytes can take 10 minutes, and streaming music and video is very choppy and lags throughout the whole file. I use a DSL-G604T router and all my network cards are 10/100Mbps, and as I said, there was once no hassles.

I've tried some usual remedies, like restoring defaults to the router; rebooting it etc. I haven't touched the drivers to the cards and they're all up to date anyway. If I view my connection from each machine the Speed rating still tells me 100Mbps.

Is this common? What could be happening? If could be noted as well that sometimes the network seemingly works fine, and music can be played between machines with ease.

Is it legal or illegal to share internet with ISP comcast? When you share internet, can one end user's computer run really slowly? What if one computer hasn't restarted in days, will that effect slowness too?

A:Sharing internet and running slowly?

It's not illegal to use a router to connect multiple computers to your Comcast account. It is illegal to share your connection with non-family members, say a neighbor.

I recently built a new custom computer for a friend, all top of the line parts. However, when I attempted to set up the internet connection, I had loads of trouble getting it to even connect to the internet. I finally got it to connect to the internet, but it runs extremely slow, and any type of file you try to download is just as creepily slow, to the point where it basically doesnt work. the wireless adapter being used is a 300mbps, and I'm not sure what the router is, but on another computer in the same house the internet works completely fine. Hope I can get this fixed! Thanks

A:Internet Running Slowly on New Computer

Make sure the antenna is secure and in a position where it is not hidden from the wireless network.

If running a Windows OS ...

Make sure you have the latest driver from the adapter manufacturer's web site.

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

So recently my internet has slowed down alot and sometimes just turns itself off completely. The problem has also been affecting xbox live (which I run through my pc) and is pretty much making games unplayable.

The strange thing is that my flatmate in the room next door can be playing on CoD:MW2 fine on his PS3 while when I try it just lags too much and similar problems with the internet in general. I have tried playing on CoD late at night when everyone else is asleep and the problem still occurred, so I believe it must be something to do with my PC. Downloads are also affected, where before they used to go at atleast 1mbps it is now struggling to get 300kbps.

My ISP is virgin, a wireless router is used throughout the house and it is netgear. For browsing the internet I use firefox. My PC was formatted last month so there isnt too much stuff on it, but it cant be that I havent installed something because it was working fine for the first few weeks after the format. I have been trying to fix it myself but I just dont know whats wrong. Xbox live sometimes tells me that the MTU setting is too low (needing to be atleast 1364) but when I checked the router settings it was on 1500 so I have no idea whats wrong.

Any suggestions? If any more info is required just ask. Thanks.

Clicked clean and it proceeded to go thru and 'clean' my system, and now the internet, both Internet explorer and Firefox are running so much slower than before. What happened?

A:Ran adwcleaner and now Internet running super slowly

I have not heard that issue associated with running AdwCleaner...in fact, by removing junk add-ons and extensions, it should speed things up.AdwCleaner should have created a folder located at C:\AdwCleaner. All AdwCleaner.txt logs are all stored in that folder including the Cleaning report log. Please copy and paste the contents of AdwCleaner[S0].txt in your next reply for review.

Hey guys... I really haven't had this problem before. My internet is very good - DSL. For the last 2 days, it's been running VERY slowly - it's been taking one minute or more to load every webpage. Downloads that have went 140kb/s are now going 500bytes - 2kb/s. My Google customized homepage takes 2 minutes to load I've run a spyware/adware scan, and it's still not working. I really don't recall doing anything that might have caused this.

I am running Windows XP.

I WOULD post a hijack this scan, but the download goes SO slow, and in the middle of the download I get the following error message:
---------------------
Internet Explorer cannot download hijackthis.zip from downloads.subratam.org [or other download source]

An unexpected error has occurred.
---------------------

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi,
I'm not sure yet if the problem is within my computer, with the router or with my provider. The thing is, whenever I download large files, the download runs smoothly, both when downloading directly from a website with my browser (IE7) or with a download manager, and when I download from GigaNews, my Usenet provider.
When I use the internet for other purposes, browsing or Skype mainly, I often experience being unable to connect or very slow opening of pages, often terminating halfway.

I'm running a fully updated Vista, and have Norton 360 installed and running. I also regularly scan with Spybot-SD and AdAware from LavaSoft. I've also used CCleaner and AdvancedWindowsCare to try to solve the problem.

What makes me so uncertain of the problem is the beforementioned fact that downloads are running so smoothly while surfing and Skype doesn't work.

I ran gmer, but refrained from DDS per the advice given. If anything else is needed please let me know and I'll provide it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

We certainly would not be advising to run any tool in our pre-posting sticky topic if we thought it to be dangerous. I believe you are referring to an older tool - DSS (Deckard's System Scanner).

Gmer alone doesn't tell me much. Please do follow the instructions for running DDS and post the logs it produces.

Hi,

I am having problems with my computer where Internet Explorer 8 is running slowly and crashing. I have checked the event logs and noticed the following errors:

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18813, time stamp 0x4a6621ae, faulting module Flash10c.ocx, version 10.0.32.18, time stamp 0x4a613d79, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0023e55a, process id 0x85c, application start time 0x01ca2c79de31429a.

Failed to load the plug-in module. (GUID = {56F9312C-C989-4E04-8C23-299DEE3A36F5})(Error code = 0x80042019)

I am currently running Windows Vista and have Norton Antivirus installed. The internet explorer erro message above shows up in the log numerous times but often has a slightly different message e.g isntead of having Flash10.ocx it sometimes has other dll names.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks for your help.

I seem to have a virus that has taken hold about a week ago. It has lowered my download speed from around 10 mbps (wireless) and 15 mbps (wired) to about 1.2-1.7 mbps. My computer has taken about 30 seconds longer to boot than prior to the "virus" and performs slower all around. At some points it will disconnect me from the internet completely and require me to reconnect 3 or 4 times before it starts working. It isn't router problems, as all of my other computers are working perfectly, and isn't the wireless adapter because I've tried 2 others, as well as connecting through my laptop, with the same result. I have tried all of the steps listed in the slow computer section of the forums and everything I have downloaded recently was scanned with AVG.

Hi there,

I've already posted recently concerning problems with one of my sons' computers, so here is the 2nd one (running XP).

No error messages, no viruses, spyware or malware etc found, but the whole system is running very slowly. I thought I'd solved things when I got rid off 150,000 temp files, but, while things are a bit better, it's still not real good.

I've had some issues with a programme called SweetIM from Macrogaming, but I think I've managed to get rid of that.

Oh yeah - nearly forgot - when I try to shut down, I get one of those 'The program is not responding' messages for iexplore.exe. When I hit 'End Now', it goes to a 'Ending Program - please wait' message, but then back to 'The program is not responding'. And it continues in that loop 'til I stop the process using Windows Task Manager (and even that takes a few goes to open).

And one more thing - I sometimes get a message saying that 'Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close' and inviting me to tell Microsoft about the problem.

Anyway - here's the log file. Any help much appreciated!

Hello,
I have been having a number of problems with my laptop in the past day, the most recent being that it is running very slowly. I will start with the problems that i had before this and how i fixed them.
Last night I was not able to boot past the windows splash screen without being greeted by a BSOD. It indicated that a driver was preventing windows from being started. I searched this driver and saw that it was related to the program Daemon Tools Lite. I booted in to safe mode and removed this program, which allowed me to get to my desktop.

I did notice however, that despite being able to get on to my desktop now, It took an unusually long time to load past the spash and login screens. Once on my desktop, everything was running very slowly. Applications took a very long time to process and open, and even something as simple as a right click has a significant delay before bringing up the menu. Upon testing programs i learned that trying to interact with Google Chrome in any way (including attempting to uninstall) would result in my computer freezing and having to be hard reset. So once again I booted into safemode and removed then reinstalled Google Chrome. It no longer freezed my computer, but it has not solved the slow problem.

So just to summarize, everything is running very slowly regardless of how many processes are currently open. This includes trying to open programs, windows files and menus/taskbar. When in safe mode with networking, none of these problem... Read more

Hallo,

The performance of my laptop (Toshiba P100-160 Satellite Pro, Vista installed at purchase) has dropped off over the last couple of months and I am not sure why.

It is somewhat erratic, but can take 5+ minutes from turning on to being able to start an application. It can take a couple of minutes to open a Word/Excel file in Office 2007 (dunno why I didn't get OpenOffice...) and much longer if opening from the web.

Occasionally it can totally freeze for a few minutes making clicking noises before it starts working again.

When typing here, or using clients like MSN, I often find that I type much faster than the text comes up on screen, and find myself waiting to see if I made any typos (and I'm no touch-typist).

I was just living with the slowness until I went away for a couple of weeks with a friend, taking her MacBook which was lightening fast in comparison.

I have tried a number of things to improve the situation:

Moved all my photos from notebook to portable hard drive
Moved all films to portable hard drive
Removed a stack of programs from the start-up menu
Defrag hard drive
Clear temporary files etc

I also changed some visual settings in windows to try and put less strain on the processor, such as removing transparency.

Removing photos and video means I have 47.4GB free (of 91.4 available). I'm surprised there is that much space taken up as I removed a whole load of games etc too.

The thing that takes longest is probably using Windows Explor... Read more

Well, I'm COMPLETELY uneducated in the "hijack this" log's.

With that said, I'm pretty sure I see two different anti-virus programs taking up space at the same time.

I'm guessing you are using McAfee and you used to have Norton. Norton IMO has a tradition of using up resources and can be hard to uninstall. (kinda like a virus!)

There is a special remover that may help. I stress MAY.

Either way, I don't think having two anti-virus programs of any sort running at the same time is going to help you.

May be the problem. Maybe not.

I'd get rid of one or the other though.

Hello, I am having problems with IE 8 on my desktop. I am connected to the interent wirelessly using a network adapter and using Windows Vista for my OS . I am connected at 4.8 m/bs and the connection status is excellent. For some reason IE andy other browser Goole Chrome will connect but it will take a very long time just to even load the home page or visit anoter site.

I have not had this problem before and was surfing the Internet very fast a few days ago with the same connection speed and status. I have already tried deleting cookies, history, temporary files. Ran a virus scan. Ran a disk clean up and reinstalled both of the browsers does anyone know a solution to this problem or has had the same problem on the past?

A:Internet Explorer running very slowly; wireless connection excellent

You could have a bad add-on.Try running IE in No Add-ons Mode. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) - If this fixes the issue, then go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons and enable the add-ons one by one to find which one was causing the problem.

You can also try resetting Internet Explorer's settings by going to Tools > Internet Options and then the "Advanced" tab, and click "Reset..."

Let me know if this solves your problem.

Cheers,

Hello,

I'm using a Compaq presario 2190 with an intel celeron and Windows XP. Some time ago, I had a really bad virus and brought it to a local computer repair shop. The technicians fixed my computer, or atleast as much as they could because lately, it takes forever to do anything, including: shutdown/restart; browsing the internet; opening any programs on my computer. I noticed that even with no other programs running other than those started by the OS at startup, the system idle process occupies the CPU at or above 90% but when I look under the performance tab, the CPU is running at around 40-50%. Maybe this is part of the problem, maybe not, just trying to give you guys some more information. Also, i have Norton Anti-virus installed and just upgraded about 1 month ago, it doesn't catch anything wrong. I have also tried to delete other programs I don't use to free up memory but it hasn't helped. Now, I am unable to check my mail or even visit the hotmail.com website, but I'm not sure if these 2 problems are linked.

I had originally posted in the malware removal section, but after 4 days without a single reply even after bumping, I'm assuming i posted in the wrong section??? However, I posted there because I believe my problem is virus-related. Any and all help would be greatly apprectiated, or even a reply at this point. Thank you in advance.

A:Solved: Computer running slowly

Norton does not catch everything - it is written in stone, some archeologists recently found...

You need to download, install and run the free versions of AVG anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit.

Download superantispyware and do the same. Also do the same with Spybot Search and Destroy.

Download CCleaner (cr*p cleaner) and run its cleaner feature (registry cleaner works great for me but some people do swear at it rather than by it)....

Overall, I, if you, would just backup everything I need and format the hard drive.

Let us know...

Hi All,

I've noticed over the last few days that my laptop is running really slowly, painfully slowly.

Every now and again, I get a popup trying to get me to install an upgrade for flash, but the banner at the top of the webpage says something about it being an add, so I just close it. I haven't noticed anything else suspicious apart from the slowness.

By slow, it only seems to be the internet, but not as in connection speed or bandwidth. I use IE and Firefox, and if I have several tabs open, and I click on one, it will take maybe 5 seconds to switch. Even clicking on something in the menu bar takes ages, and typing can be temperamental as well.

I've tried Avast and Mbam and they didn't pick up on anything.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dom

For some strange reason after using my computer for a while without switching it off it begins to run excruciatingly slowly in some aspects. Opening a new tab or connecting to a different site takes about 20 seconds in Chrome, however a link from one youtube page to another is almost instant. Occasional crashes occur though.

Firefox is extremely slow though and completely unusable, it consistently crashes. I never use Firefox, I always use Chrome. So this can't be a Chrome issue.

I get the same with applications, opening new applications takes ages but when they are open there are no problems.
(Like left clicking to open up the toolbar is instant but clicking the properties button takes ages for it to open).
My CPU usage stays almost at a constant 2% and memory is currently 43% of 16Gb used.

I will not be doing any defragmenting since I have ssds (Although I did used to defrag the C: before I found out why it was bad)
I have Avast antivirus that doesn't detect anything wrong with my system at all. However I question how good Avast really is since apparently I've never gotten a virus on this computer yet.

I've had this Windows 7 Pro system for a few years and it's been thru many upgrades & revisions. Last week, internet browsing and applications started getting slower. I have tried to clean up unwanted programs & the hard drives but it still seems slower than I seem to remember.

Here's the system info (W7 on C: and most apps/data on D: );

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) 9650 Quad-Core Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 2 Stepping 3
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 4095 Mb
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3850, 256 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 76316 MB, Free - 16627 MB; D: Total - 400620 MB, Free - 255617 MB;

Antivirus: Immunet 3, Updated and Enabled

I have some external drives, it also runs Serviio service as my media streaming server and I have Comodo Firewall, Immunet 3 AV.

Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

OK, so I may have found (one of) the reasons for the system running slowly. I had somehow managed to activate a second AV app. (Avira OE) which seemed to be spending all the time thrashing the system. I've just re-booted and it seems to be running far better than before.

I recently "upgraded" to Firefox 6. Everything is fine, except that the spacebar takes a good couple of seconds before the cursor moves along. This happens in almost every site I type in, including, annoyingly, Hotmail. Obviously, this makes it almost impossible to type.

I tried downgrading back to Firefox 5, but still had the same problem, so I reinstalled 6.

The spacebar works fine in Internet Exporer, but I generally prefer to use Firefox.

What can have happened, and can anyone offer a solution?

Many thanks.

Did you have this problem in Firefox 5 before you updated to 6?

Do you have any addons installed, and have you tried running Firefox with them disabled?

Ok so my windows is running extremely slowly... its lagging all over the place. For example as I type this message its not going smooth but skiping few letters since im typing it fast. The folders and programs are opening extremely slowly... I had this problem for a while now but it wasn't so bad but the interesting thing is that it keept comming and going, but now its quite bad and slow.

So far I have:
Deleted my temp files
used disc cleaner and cleaned the disk
Defragmented
Cleaned up my computer with a spyware and anti virus program

Restarted the PC
Nothing.. infact its lagging more than ever now...

What to do?

It also takes quite a fair amount of time to boot up btw.

I have 261,664 KB Ram, Windows 2000 service pack 4 and 59.6 GB of free space left. When i play my game(Warcraft III Frozen Throne) it takes a long time to load and it lags a lot. It lags so much that i've been banned and booted out of some games. I was just wondering if I had a virus or if you could help me make it run normally . This problem only started this year. I have been playing for about 3 years and it has never run this slowly. This problem also effects my whole computer, not just my game. It takes a long time to open files, open internet explorer and everything just runs EXTREMELY slow !I would be very grateful if you could help me get rid of this problem! Thanks!

Several months ago I had to completely wipe my computer and reinstall everything due to a .dll failing to load after having installed a Windows Update.

About a week ago, I noticed that the graphics on my computer were bad. Two days ago I went to Dell's website and made sure I had the latest updates for my graphics card ( NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 ). That seemed to have corrected my bad graphics issue as my screen looked normal again.

Yesterday I began to notice that web pages would not load properly, that I couldn't have more than one instance of a browser open at one time, and that pages just froze.

Today the computer crashed with a blue screen that said page_fault_in_nonpaged_area. Then I got a message box from Windows Error Reporting saying that a device driver caused Windows to stop unexpectedly...a "stop error". It told me to go use Windows Updates to check for updated drivers. I went there, but could never get to any page where drivers were updated, it just kept trying to check my computer for updates...and then said that I needed to update my Windows Update (KB892130 - Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool). It failed to install this update and would not install it the couple of times I tried.

I have ran Hijack This and the other scans as instructed and are posting them (and/or attaching) them below:

Hi ,

I have noticed over the last week that everything on my pc has started to open and run slowly, Internet explorer in particular seems to take ages to open initially. I have run scans with AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware Se, and A Squared, along with CWS and Trend Micro's online scanner and nothing seems to be out of order there. I defragment my hard disk regularly and clear out any clutter from the registry using Winoptimizer 3 and Registry Mechanic. I have Service Pack 2 installed and regularly check for updates.

My computer is about 3 years old, and although only a 1.8MHz processor has always run relatively smoothly and quickly enough for my needs, now things take ages to open.

I'm not sure if I'm right, but when I installed IE7 and then had to remove it because of the HP Director conflict (the work around available didn't work), IE6 seemed slower to start once reinstalled. I tried Firefox2 which I liked but that seemed to take even longer to open.

I noticed that it seems the thing to do to post HJT logs so mine follows.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions as to why thing are slowing down. Thanks in advance

ps. A squared always seems to find something called HackerWacker which it then proceeds to delete for it to be there again next time. I think this is a false positive, at least i hope so..

pps. Also, if there is anything that I don't need showing up in the HJt log please let me know.

Hello,
my computer seems to have slowed down loads in the last week, at first I thought it was just the fact that my hard drive is nearly full but it seems to take a really long time to do anything. I've run an AdAware scan which came up with nothing and a Norton scan also came up with nothing.
The only thing I haven't tried doing is defragmenting my Hard Drive. I don't use any peer to peer programs. I use Win XP and use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird for Web+Email duties. I've attached a HiJack This log below

My computer is running slow and I am out of ideas as to why. I have ran desk clean up, disk scan, anti-virus, defragmented, deleted all temp files and still it it running slower than usual. I also have been receiving run-time error messages, which I believe I have now fixed.

When I use my DVD burner is goes extremely slow. Much slower than usual. I don't know what else to do. Suggestions would be appreciated. I will answer any questions you may have as best I can. Thank you for you time.

Hi all,

My laptop has just decided to run very slowly of late. So much so that I am unable to run certain programs. Some will load up but if you try and navigate through any screens etc the program will stop working (comes up with not responding in windows task manager). This is even happening with windows explorer. I've got Norton 360, which although it should automatically boot up at start up is failing to do so. I can't even get it to run to perfom a system scan. This leads me to think I may have a nasty virus or worse still failing hardware.

I've fortunately been able to run a HJT scan and report:

Within the past few days, I noticed my laptop's fan always running high. As I tried to determine the cause, I noticed the following, in order of discovery:

--IE address bar missing, though checked. Searched, found fix. That much is working now.

--When I click My Computer, flashlight displays for up to a minute before drives display.

--Typing an address in IE and hitting GO or <ENTER> seems not to work; but after a minute or so site comes up.

--Windows updates won't run

--Trying to pull down address history takes up to a minute to dispay.

--Using Google, sites come up immediately.

I have run Adaware, Spybot and my McAfee AV scan. The only thing found were tracking cookies.

I have run the five steps and include requested logs.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi All... been a while since I have been here, but here I am yet again...

I am running win98 (I know I am still in the dark ages) and upon bootup and shut down, the speed of doing so has dropped dramatically, especially after having many windows open (like facbook, MSN chat, IE home page and Zoom XE browser for photos)... it just may be a memory issue or just too many windows open for the computer... but it is truly annoying that it is not running up-to-par

I am enclosing the HJT log here and other than upgrading the windows application, would appreciate any advice you may have... no rush as the computer is still working enough for me to use it...

Hello,

After uninstalling Norton 360, as it was making my machine slow, I've found that my browser runs extremely slowly nevertheless.

I have a Windows XP machine. To uninstall Norton I first used the Add/Remove Programs facility in the Control Panel. When this didn't correct the problem with the slow browser I downloaded a utility from the Symantec site for removing Norton 360. This failed to work as well so I'm at my wit's end as to how to get the browser to run at normal speed.

I have been unable to find any mention of similar problems by other people.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Earlier this week I noticed my sound started skipping, and my laptop was running a little slower than usual. I ran a disk check, defrag, cc cleaner and anti-spyware programs, but nothing seemed to help.

Searching for the problem online, trying to diagnose it myself has been interesting, but so far nothing seemed to work. I do notice that I have a lot of applications running in the task manager which makes me think that it's some sort of virus, so I installed 'hijackthis' but I don't think I'm savvy enough to use it to it's fullest potential, though I did find a few things I could delete.

But I've also read it could be a problem with a driver, or something that is conflicting with a windows update.

I've uninstalled several programs including itunes, just to see if it would help, and although my computer is running faster than it did earlier in the week, it's still slower than normal the sound is still skipping and I don't know why.

I got this laptop in 2006, but I've taken good care of it and it's taken good care of me- although the last few years it's had a few bugs, I'd rather not shell out for a new computer just yet.

Hello again everyone! I was fortunate enough to save my personal files on the Acer Aspire 5745! Unfortunately, a new issue has surfaced! I did a full system restore to factory conditions and wiped the C: drive clean. I've since started adding a few things back to the laptop like Firefox, Webroot, etc. Now EVERY action takes FOREVER to load. Whether it's going to shut down, open my Pictures section under my account, Windows Task Manager, or going to My Computer it says (Not Responding) to EVERYTHING! Is there an easy solution to this? I read somewhere that tweaking some of the registry settings could resolve this but I wanted to ask here to be sure.

A:[SOLVED] Acer Aspire Running VERY Slowly & Programs Not Responding

Since my Gateway DX200X's old hard drive is on the verge of failing, I've purchased a 1TB WD Green internal hard drive and installed Windows XP SP2 on it. While I'm now facing the predictable problem of how to transfer my various old programs and settings to this new OS without having to reinstall everything, I've run into another problem which has to be addressed right now:

My computer is now running at an agonizingly slow speed. I took a look at the graphs in the Processes tab of the Task Manager, and it seems like my CPU's power usage jumps as high as 100% even when I do something as basic as moving a window. Is my computer just not powerful enough to handle a larger hard drive, or is this model of hard drive just really slow?

I have run all my programs for spyware, malware, and viruses and nothing is coming up. My computer is freezing off and on. It is also running horribly slow. I have not downloaded anything. The only thing I have done is run my new AT&T set up discs and I am not sure if that might have something to do with it. I need to know how to figure out what my problem is before I throw this thing into the yard.

Please help me!

Hi,

About a week ago I turned on my computer (Windows XP) and it took about an hour to load. Spyware Scans (Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG Anti-spyware, AdAware) which all came up clean.

I repaired Windows XP which didn't help, did disk error checks, and defragmented the computer, all of which didn't help. I've noticed some odd looking programs when I press ctrl+alt+del and sometimes one program is taking up 98% cpu usage. Once I stop that program the computer seems to work ok. Weirdly enough, the two programs that I stopped were aawservice (seems to be involved in AdAware) and one that's involved in Spybot.

Is this a spyware problem? And how do I get rid of some programs that are running on startup and which ones to get rid of?

Thanks in Advance!!

Hello!

Many thanks in advance for your assistance! Through some inadvertent clicking I was attacked by "Antispyware Master" a rogue antispyware program. I have deleted all the files I could find, as well as some registry entries associated with the program as suggested by another website, before I found you guys. Additionally I have ended the associated process to it and it is no longer bothering. It has not shown up after several restarts. However, I am still receiving numerous malicious popups in IE. Firefox is also not running well. I am able to click through to maybe two websites before it will completely hang up and say "waiting for xyz website". Furthermore, I am sporadically getting a windows explorer buffer underrun error that informs me that it is no longer able to continue executing and must close. It will do this periodically and the machine usually continues to operate relatively normally. Occasionally however, it will actually shut down explorer and the taskbar and desktop icons will all disappear. I am able to continue working in the windows that remain open however, but a restart is required to get explorer back.

Also, I have run scans with adaware, and spybot several times to clean the system, and have not had any new significant results recently to show improvement. I have run a couple of scans with Norton and it also comes back clean. However, sometimes after a popup window opens Norton will open an alert saying it found a virus in ... Read more

Hi

My laptop is running Vista Home Premium. Recently, while it is has an excellent conneciton to the wireless network or conected via ethernet lead to the router, browsing has become painfully slow, playing on-line games impossible etc. Other laptops browse quickly between pages etc.

I today noticed in the Task Manager services tab that a large number of services are marked as "stopped" (about 50% of those in the list). I have attached a screen shot. I've no idea if this is related- but some of the services look relatively important.

Could this be related? Suggestions on where to go if it is please.

Many thanks

Mim

A:Task Manager showing many services "stopped" and internet running slowly

If ALL of the services were running, your computer would be even slower.

It's normal for 50% or more of the services to be stopped.

If you go to SERVICES.MSC, you will get a better picture of the services list and which ones are running.

Hello all,

I am wondering if someone may be able to help me. My PC has been running very slowly the last few weeks now and it is getting very irritating.

I have scanned it with AVG antivirus, Scanned with Spybot S&D, and adaware. I have also ran Ace Utilities to clean up registry etc. All to apparantly no avail.
I have since downloaded HJT and include the logfile below. Can someone please decipher and see if there is anything in there that looks a bit dodgy?

My PC has been progressivly running slower, but particularly since I changed over from Norton to McAfee software. When I run the tool procexp.exe, it shows Mcshield.exe dominating CPU time and when I kill this process, programs speed up markedly

Recent sequence of events has been:
- Uninstalled Norton and then installed McAfee antivirus & firewall software
- Deleted (stupidly) remaining files containing references to symantec, norton & nav (made backups before deleting)
- re-installed McAfee antivirus & firewall software (with some improvement in speed)
- followed the proceedure in 'Hello and Welcome to the TechSupportForum'
'what to do before you post a log...'
- set Ad-ware preferences and ran
- ran 'trend micro' virus scan
- ran Hijackthis (log file attached)
- ran Hijack This Analyser (report attached)

Mcshield.exe still dominates CPU time. Boot up time currently ~ 2 1/2 min

Would appreciate help on how can speed up programs

Hi rmc and welcome to TSF! Please copy/paste your logs in here, thanks.

Welp, the logs look pretty clean of malware. I will make a couple quick recommendations. When your reboot at end and reply, copy/paste a HJT full log this time, not the analyzed version. May move your thread over to the XP forum for follow-up.

============

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O23 - Service: SymWMI Service - Unknown - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe (file missing)

Reboot into Normal Mode and let us know if any help.

Hello,

My Laptop is running slowly. I've followed all the steps outlined in the "Is your PC running slow...?" These steps seem to have helped quite a bit, but I want to make sure I don't have any malware installed.

I've followed the steps to get the logs as detailed in the "NEW INSTRUCTIONS..." post for malware removal first posting. Please find my dds.txt copy/pasted below and attach.zip, including attach.txt and ark.txt, attached.

Unfortunately, I do not know if there is any infection, nor can I describe any issues other than slow performance.

Thanks,
Heezea

I've tried disabling processes in Task Manager and the only one I've found that helps (doesn't cure it completely) is spoolsv.exe (found in C:/i386). It seems to keep coming back, although it could be a legitimate file. I renamed it to spoolsv.BAK in the i386 file and that has not been changed. I'm using (as you can see in the logs) MS Security Essentials and firewall. I've also run Malwarebytes, but nothing has detected anything viral.

Hi, my Pc every day starts running really slowly like it is virus checking (although I have set the check and backup to 2am), I can hear the processor clicking away as though it is being stretched and quite often I get a notification to say the PC is low on memory and to close programs, it seems to happen for about an hour twice a day. How do I find out what it causing it to run slow, I am assuming its a background task scheduled each day?

If not malware is there anything you suggest to trouble shoot the problem.

Hi guys

I wonder if anyone can help.

My PC (HP Compaq Pentium 4 3.00GHz with 1GB RAM) is running XP Pro with SP2.

It boots up pretty fast, and runs well after that. I work from home and so typically use it for up to 10 hours a day, using apps like Firefox, MS Office, Skype, etc nothing too intensive.

The problem is that after a couple of hours all the apps start running really slowly. I reboot and the machine runs great again.

I loaded the free Comodo firewall a month or so back but I'm convinced this started in the last 2 weeks. Yesterday I run a Spybot S&D and also malwarebytes anti-malware scan but this had made no difference.

I've got another 1GB of RAM on order and this will help but I think there may be another underlying problem.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance , JD
