Q: I am throwing myself at the mercy of Tech Support Guy

Hi, every one.
I am new to this posting on forums stuff so bear with me. I have been having problems with my computers for a couple of weeks now. It all started when I was not able to get online and discovered after a phone call to my ISP that my email account had been hijacked while in the webmail site (just so happened the only time in my life I had been to webmail happened to be on a previous cust. serv. call to my ISP. Go figure) the hijacker was using my email address to mass mail not very nice explicit emails to God only knows who. Any way, got all that straightened out...I thought. Lately I have been noticing similar behavior on my Vista computer, general slowdowns, changed settings, occasional lockups etc. I have run scans for viruses and spyware with several different software packages which include System Mechanics 7 Pro, System Suite 7 Pro, Spyware Dr with antivirus, and even a couple of different freebies. I currently have TREND MICRO Internet Security Pro installed on a 90 day free trial. Even though I have scanned with multiple programs and nothing shows up, I still have a feeling bad things are on the prowl (nothing showed up on scans the whole time some jerk was mass mailing sexually explicit messages from my account either) as I said before, weird Gremlins type activity is taking place. I have already downloaded and run Hijack this and saved a log. Would any one here be able to look at it and notice if something is amiss as I cannot? It all just looks the same to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I installed Win8 on one computer I need a H.P. printer driver. So I went to H.P. support/download did not find the needed driver so I called their Tech. support. A friendly support guy looked at my system and told me my copy of Microsoft Win8 bought at Best Buy was not a legit copy, also my system had been infected and they needed to remove my Win8 clean my system and reinstall Win8. made me a deal of a reduced price of $250US I knew this was not right so I begged them good buy went to Best Buy where I have good friends in the Geek Squad. they got the needed driver and printer works fine. Today my Netgear routher died, called Netgear to get my lifetime warranty. This also was a support in India guy said it would cost$39US to make sure it was the router I said thanks but no thanks. Took my old Netgear router back to Best Bye where I bought it three years ago and they gave me a new Netgear router. I needed setup help so called Netger as new user also in India guy was friendly looked at my system and helped me get it setup. Then he informed me my computer was under attack and my files were being read he could fix my system and protect my files for the small sum of just $85US. Well I was using a small backup H.P. computer on the Net. hardwired and it was almost never used. So I knew it was a India Tech. support scam again. I just installed XP on an old computer 2 days ago and ran all of 142 Windows Updates. As for your current installation, try running a Clean Boot. If this works then add one startup item at a time, restarting each time till the computer becomes unresponsive, then you know what the problematic program is. Also, go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter, in the command prompt type a Y for Yes and reboot the computer. Check Disk will go thorough 5 stages and takes some time. Got my computer in April and all of a sudden it quit loading up after a restart or shut down. So they diagnose it over the phone as a bad power supply. I send it in, they have it for a week and a half and sent it back today, so I turned it on and it has the exact same problem. I call them back and they say well it must be the motherboard. I can not believe that they didn't at least test the thing out to see if it worked before sending it back to me. i m unable to open add/remove programs in the control panel.i tried out appwiz.cpl to open ,but there wasn't any response.
i even tried the following one,

Click Start => Run and type in "regedit" {without the quotes}
Navigate to the following key:

In the right-hand pane, delete all the Values whose data value is set
to "no".

but nothing works . plz any of the tech geeks out there help me 2 sort out tis problem.!!!!!!

1.have you tried in safe mode...?

2. This happens if your user account does not have Write access to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Setup \ Oc Manager \ TemporaryData

Type regedit.exe in Start, Run dialog

Navigate to the above registry key

Allow Set Value permissions to your user account

Click OK and close the dialog
If above registry not help...
3. Check with Malwarebytes,

Install Malware and update it.. and do full scan.

remove infected registry and do reboot.

When I try to search [in IE7] for my initial reason for coming to this forum I get:

hello everyone, Im new to this forum!! I need some tech support on Apache.

I setup my Apache on port 80. I set the Network domain to localhost and i set the server name for the name i got from dyndns.org. When i type localhost in my browser it works fine. When i type my Internal IP in my browser it works. I got the internal from ipconfig. btw im running this on Win XP Pro. When i type my external IP and my server name in the browser neither 1 of them takes me to the Apache page where it says to replace the page. I do not have a separate router. Im on ADSL and im pretty sure that my ADSL modem has a router built in. Does anyone know what the problem could be?? Can anyone give me private free tech support vis email or any messenger in IM?? hey all...just came back from spending the holiday installing my mom's pc and getting her online. since she is pc illiterate, and because we are in different states, i am anticipating many long nights on the phone with her, since

so, i'm thinking about how to make this as painless as possible...f'rinstance: i'm wondering how i might set it up so i can access her pc via the internet, in order to intervene remotely and correct anything she might mess up....anything from helping her to edit a photo to runing a spyware scan on her system to changing an option in her browser. even better might be the ability to see her desktop when she's at her pc, in order to walk her through things live on the phone while we are both looking at the same thing. any suggestions how one might do things like this or any other suggestions for this kind of situation?

Hello guys.

I recently bought my grandparents a laptop. They are 60-70 years old. Now, I live three hours away from them. And this is their first experience with a computer. So I am trying to help them, but tech support over the phone is difficult and can only go so far.

I am looking for some software that I can install on my computer, and their laptop, so that when they are having issues with their computer I can take control of their laptop, see their screen, fix their issues, and walk them through it. Free or paid is fine.

Okay,I messed up, my laptop (Toshiba L755) was infected and just after xmas I noticed my documents and pictures (everything for my 501.c.3 animal rescue) was GONE. I panicked and somehow wound up on the phone with ATS. They had me put it in safe mode and THANKFULLY (from what I saw) all my pics and docs were there!!! They did a remote in to my laptop and said it would be several hours and they would fix it, A WEEK LATER (with daily phone calls) NOTHING, and on the second day, everything was gone from safe mode too. I was furious and even tho they refunded my money, I still do not have my stuff back, I am heart broken, these docs and pics are SO important to my nonprofit work, it has been horrible... Can anyone help???

I need to speak to a support tech in the US.  I was told I had this option when I bought my computer.  I am still in warranty, have a 3 year HP Care Pack.  I spent most of a night from 8:30 PM to 2:30AM on the phone with some guy that had me actually attempting to take off the side panel on my computer and move some plugs.  These people were rude, obnoxious and didn't help at all.  Now they want to come out and change my hard drive??????  They wanted me to do it at first but I told them no.  I run my home and business on this computer and i can't afford to be down for 3 days and lose all of the software I've paid for.  I don't have another computer to put the software on.  I need a United States technition.  I had them when I bought the computer directly from HP and used them, they were great and a real pleasure to work with.  They knew what they were talking about!!  Is there any way to get to one of these guys or girls again.  I had this all written down and cannot find the sheet anymore.

I believe that I posted the following in the incorrect heading "Software" when I should have posted it under hardware. Therefore I am posting it once again and hoping in desperation that someone will be able to help me with this problem. Thanking you in advance for any assistance!

Two weeks ago I purchased the Samsung Galaxy S tablet model: TS-700 with ?Kit Kat 4.4.2? which is exactly what I wanted. I ran into constant notification attempts by Samsung to get me to install Lollipop 5.0.2 which I do not want. I tried to evade these attempts but finally lollipop was automatically installed on my tablet without my permission. I turned it on to find the installation process in progress and a warning not to turn off the tablet. I hadn't thought to prevent this by disabling automatic updating. So I got blind sided by Samsung.
I now want to downgrade from lollipop back to Kit Kat 4.4.2 as I detest lollipop and it immediately started causing problems whereas Kit Kat was working like a charm.
Before attempting this, I am seeking a qualified tech persons knowledge, advice and instructions on the best way to do this. I am reasonably computer smart so I am confident that given precise instructions I can do it.

Hey everyone, and thanks in advanced for your help. I'm having some issues with this very website (Tech Support Guy). Whenever I access it, I am normally supposed to be logged in. I am, and I will attempt to access a forum, post, etc. Then the website logs me out and reverts back to the original color theme.

Once I've logged back in, I will access a post or what have you, only to have been logged out -again-! Then I will log back in, and my browser will redirect me to the forum so I may post something myself. Then once I post something I have to log back in -again-! (and this happens whenever I click a new thread or whatever...it will probably happen once I am finished typing this post).

Anyway, if there is any advice on how to fix this that somebody could offer it would be greatly appreciated since I love this site and enjoy helping the community. It's just a hassle to have to keep logging in every 10 seconds.

I have a friend who had a problem on her computer and she called her ISP Comcast for help since she uses their Norton anti-virus program. To make a long story short, she had to provide them with both her log in & email passwords and then they wanted to charge her $215 to clean her computer. That doesn't make sense to me - I'm not aware of any reliable ISP tech support asking for passwords. I know they ask for permission to take control of a computer and then supply a service number the computer user has to enter. Is this something new that an ISP tech support asks for passwords. She has changed her email password and I recommended to her to also change her log on password. Consider all the options available. Sites like and especially this one can solve most software problems. Really thorough books are available. I just pulled one containing 1101 pages just on Vista from my shelf. On a per inquiry basis, any tech can "share" your computer. If you're uncomfortable working inside the box, there has to be local or shipping help available. Your current "service" can't physically fix hardware anyway. With all the money you'll save, you'll be able to afford the new and hopefully error free computer when this one bids adieu.

It's the 'Remove the Windows has been Blocked Tech Support Scam'

However, unfortunately I did call the number, and when they wanted money I said absolutely not. Now, when I power up that PC, I get a pop-up that asks for admin password (not the Windows or BIOS popup). I tried command prompt, system restore, and reinstalling windows deleting everything but what was installed and personal files, and still the same popup requesting a password. I tried Esc, and cancel and enter, all not working.

Any suggestions? Any help at all greatly appreciated

Let me start by thanking you for your patience as you read this. I contacted HP Tech support via chat numerous times to discuss general questions around some concerns I had regarding a "space issue" I was having. The "space issue" actually was caused by a surplus of photos I had in "MY PICTURES" which I thought I had removed after I burned them to a disk as well as video files located on another user profile.

Anyhow, I contacted HP support and was advised to do a "non destructive" recovery and was completely assured that this would resolve my problem and all files and applications would remain in tact unharmed. Well that was crap.

Once the recovery process was complete, all user information was gone. No user profiles existed on the login screen. I had to recreate a user profile. The recovery reverted everything to "factory settings", however all files were found on the old user profile which was located under "documents and settings" on the c:\ drive.

Hi, little glitch. When you good people notify me of a related post I duly open the email and normally right click on the link and "open in a new tab". This works fine. If however I LEFT click on it, I get an empty box, centre screen and the pc locks and I have to hack thru' task mang to get going again. Not really a prob but I would like some info if possible.

This lady couldn't figure out why I was experiencing problems and she said she would transfer me to a Senior Tech. The phone rang and some guy at Panasonic tech support picked up. I was just a bit confused...

I believe they have recently moved all their offices to India. About two years ago I was able to get an American call centre, not anymore!

I had just called them last night and kept hearing my voice echo. I asked the lady and she gave me some weird answer... I didn't really understand what she said but it is quite annoying constantly hearing yourself talk back.

Our company, a small based business, wants to get into Remote Tech Support, Customers call in, or visit the website, and we fix problems remotely.
Of couse they must have internet access...that works...

Asking from all the people here, who has ideas of what kind of software would do this?
I have checked multiple online companies, prices can get steep.
Only 1 person, maybe 2, will be doing this remote support starting out, so dont need anything with 50+ users license.

I had a company called Advanced Tech Support remotely tune up my computer. But they could not do it until I had Verizon come out and see why my download speed was only 0.43. Verizon found the problem and got my download speed up.After that ATS took my computer over for about 3 hours. Now all my downloads are fast and buffering problems are gone.
I think probably though. Just upping the speed would have fixed the problem. But I had already payed them So I let them do the work..
Here's my question. I watched them remove my "Revo uninstaller", my "Should I remove it" and my "Spybot" When I asked the representative why she said because they all have a bad reputation for Malware. Has anybody here heard this about these 3 programs.? I sure haven't. Unless you guys here at TS warn me not to I'm going to put them back. Especially since I like the way Revo gets rid of the extra crap. and Spybot has found things that MBAM and SAS didn't Thanks

Personally I've never had any "Malware" problems related to revo that I know of. I think (s)he just didn't like the program. I'm not familiar with "Should I remove it" & I quit using Spybot when they updated the program a few years ago.

Hello,

It all began with a free space issue - after connecting numerous times to HP support tech, i was told to do a non destructive system restore., which i did, only to find my user profile gone, and all the dlls that run my applications no longer working. The space issues was from too many picture files, which i discovered my husband had uploaded about 1500 pictures of a friends wedding. so once i got rid of those pictures, the space issue was resolved.

After being completely frustrated, and a lot of research, I read to "copy over" my old user profile files from under "documents and settings" to the new profile i created.. which I did. I also did a disk clean up and defrag.. and evidently have deleted a bunch of things i shouldn't have. I never actually recovered the user profile.. the weird thing is... is that the picture i had chosen associated with the old profile i'm trying to recover.. was recovered. totally weird voo doo stuff going on in the background i guess. so now i want to scream. i guess i can delete everything.. i've backed up all the stuff that was under my documents. so no big deal, however it's the applications that i'm worried about. when doing the non destructive restore, it took me back to factory settings.. so my norton 2007 internet security was replaced with the 60 day trial version of 2006 that came with the PC (which was purchased in december 2006 and in march 2007 i got some freaky virus and the geek squad folks did a d... Has anyone heard of or had dealings with Procomsupport247 or Khamtechnologies. When My wife called the microsoft support number on two different occasions these are the people she got. They did help with the problem but they charge for service and want you to sign up for multi year contracts. Any help would be appreciated.

I just received a phone call from tech support at Jars Support telling me that there is a problem with my computer. They say they know because I have chosen the "send report" option after some problem. However, I never choose this option. They had me scroll through: My Computer --> Manage --> ? (I forget) and showed me that I have a lot of "errors", "warnings", and a few "criticals" and claimed that my computer is infected. They offered to sell me a service to repair my computer and also to renew my "software warranty".

This all seems very suspicious to me. But I don't know what to make of all of those errors, warnings, and criticals and, of course, if my computer is infected I want to fix it.

Hi, Are you using two active security programs by any chance that have real time protection running? I see you also have Kaspersky.....did you mean on a different machine and not on this machine with the AVG issue? I realize it's a very basic question but we run into this quite often so just making sure. More than one antivirus / security suite type program running will usually cause weird issues like slowness and errors.

I support 2 labs where students log on to the domain. All the workstations are XP Pro. How do I copy a printer into "all users" profile so that everybody logging on sees the printer. I don't want to set the printer individually on each profile..

Log on as administrator, or yourself if you have admin rights. Add a printer as Local Printer and uncheck automatically detect, create a new port as Local port, where the port name is \\printserver\printername then just allow the wizard to complete.

using my Internet Explorer 5.1 (Mac OS X) proxy server, typing in the Tech Support Guy website (www.helponthe.net) pulls up http://discussions.virtualdr.com/ instead.

But when I don't use the proxy server, helponthe.net works fine.

Any ideas?

Over this past weekend I have been getting calls from "Windows Tech Support". The first time the tech said my computer was sending out warning messages to them. I asked him how it was doing that I cannot remember what he said he asked "you are using windows OS correct?"
I said so I use a Mac he hung up when I said that. I just laughed and let it past. A few hours they call back. They have called several times and today they call claiming they are "Dell tech support" I do have a Dell laptop (How they know that?) They said my Dell was sending them warnings
bla bla bla. I told them I was running Linux they hung up. I laughed again and let it pass. Then an hour later they call back. Frustrated I told them I was not home and asked if they could call back. I am waiting on them to call back. I have made a whole drive backup with True Image. I am going to let them log in and I will be watching what they do. I have a hp psc 1350 v printer, trying to install on this machine; printer was installed on this machine in nov.2003 and worked fine until 2 weeks ago. at that time , printer quit working and in the control panel, printer icon showed up like a hidden file. tried to reinstall printer several times with no success. contacted hp support, spent several hours, spanning 4 days ,installing and uninstalling software, trying to install this printer. changed usb cables and same problem.other usb devises are recognised instantly. Hp support sent me a new printer, tried to install, same problem...no printer. so, tried to install printer on 2 other pcs and no problem, worked great (one machine has the exact same mother board as the problem pc).Hp says its a chip problems, problem started when i did a windows recommended driver update for via chip. CAN YOU HELP?

A:[B]HP Tech support gave up on this one[/B]

Uninstall the printer, through ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and remove any left over HP/printer entries - look under HP, USB, all the categories. If HP gave you a seperate uninstaller to use then run that, they usually have one and if you look through your CD you might be able to find it hidden somewhere. Then unplug the printer and all other USB devices - except USB a mouse and Keyboard if yours happen to be USB.

Now still in Device Manager remove all USB hubs and then all USB Controllers.

Now go here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403 and download and install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and reboot as request. Then reboot again after the USB controllers are reinstalled.

Now download the latest printer drivers from HP's website for your model if you haven't done so yet and start the installation. Do not plug in the printer until prompt to do so or until the installation is totally complete. When plugging in the printer use a USB connector that is not near the one you used before - they are usually in pairs of two.

If that Fails you can do a System Restore from Programs - Accessories - System to a date before the problems started and hope it works and doesn't recur.

XP runs better with more RAM - if there's nothing wrong with it then add it back in.

Problem:
I had a desktop that was a wired connectoion and wanted to give it to my kid, so i got a wireless network card and installed it. The card seemed to be working fine, but it would not connect to the internet. (it would hang on "aquiring a network address" then error out saying windows coudlnt connect..)
I called Belkin tech support who tried a bunch of nonsence scare tactics to make me believe my registry was corrupt and that i had a virus. end result- pay them money and they would fix the issue, AND i would be protected for some amount of time. I believe it is 30 days, 90 days, 6 months a year or even 3 years.

What they didnt know/ask/think about was that the router and network card were both brand new, and that the computer I was having issues with had a fresh install of win XP with paid antivirus program. I am having a problem with my granddaughters laptop. The anti-virus had expired when she brought it to me (I'm an IT guy). She was getting popups about cleaning her laptop. It had Optimize pro, My PC Backup, etc. installed (she's 13, not sure if she responded to the popups or not.

I've removed what I thought was junk, installed Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes, but I can't get either of them to launch and scan the laptop.

Last weekend I was on the phone with Netgear for 4 hours trying to install a simple router and wireless adaptor for the second computer in the house.

The box says "normal installation time 20 minute"

Yesterday, the computer failed in loading Windows XP, so I had to restore the computer to a date PRIOR to the installation of the wireless adaptor.

Today, after 90 minutes on the phone, speaking to a man with an accent so thick, he had to spell just about every word (Whiskey Oscar Romeo Delta) using the phonetic alphabet.

Then we reach my boiling point where I can take it no longer, here's the conversation:

Netgear: Now, under >basic >wireless read me the number
Me: There is no number
Netgear: Yes, very good, now read me the number on the screen
Me: I'm looking at the basic-wireless screen, there is no number on the screen anywhere, am I in the wrong place?
Netgear: No, you are in the right place, just read me the number
Netgear: Yes, thank you, please read me the number on the screen.
Me: Sir, are you listening to me? Say these words back to me, "there is no number on the screen to read."
Netgear: What do you mean there is no number? Of course there is a number there.
Me: May I speak to your supervisor?
Netgear: No, I will solve your problem.
Me: "click" I hung up.

90 minutes, problem remains, and I get a survey from netgear asking me to rate their customer service.

I downloaded BuzMe Free and had call forward on busy activated last week. It shows online on the BuzMe site that call forwarding has not been activated although I've called the phone company and verified twice that it has. The phone company has also repeated the toll-free number to me twice and they have it right

When I contact tech support at BuzMe, I get an auto-reply. I've followed all of the steps, but when I reply to the message as directed ("If these don't solve your problem, email us at...."), but I keep getting the same auto message. Also, if I click the link in the email ("I've set up my call forwarding but I'm not being notified of incoming calls. Why?" - click here), but get a syntax error.

Has anyone had this trouble? Does anyone know what information I may be missing at the site that will help me solve this problem?

To post this threa I have had to turn off Zonealarm Pro. When I log in to Tech Support there is no problem but as soon as I try to access the forums I am immediately logged out. This happens to me with other forums and I have noticed also that I can only access the first page on EBay and not page 2 onwards.
I have looked at all the options on Zonealarm but I cannot see what I can do, it must be Zonealarm causing the problem as when I turn it off I have no problems. Thanks. Roger

Even if tools don't find malware, I want you to post the logfiles anyway.
Please copy and paste the logfiles directly into your posts. Please do not attach them unless you are instructed to do so.
Read the instructions carefully. If you have problems, stop what you  were doing and describe the problems you encountered as precisely as  you can.
Don't install or uninstall software during the cleanup unless you are told to do so.
Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during always the scan.
If you can't answer for the next few days, please let me know. If  you haven't answered within 5 days, I am assuming that you don't need  help anymore and your topic will be closed.
If you have illegal/cracked software, cracks, keygens, etc. on the system, please remove or uninstall them now!

Additional information to what was given above - the pop-up reads "Hkey_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/system is denied"

The "tech" phone number is 1-800-418-4202, which a quick Google confirms is fraudulent.

I tried to uninstall Chrome, thinking that might help, but on reboot Chrome is back and still functioning. I can usually troubleshoot ok, but I've tried everything I could find and safely do and I'm out of options. Is there anything else I can do to resolve this issue and get my computer back?

My grandfather got taken in by a Microsoft Windows Support Scam and I'm fairly certain that his laptop's got a bug that I can't get rid of.

What happened:

He got a popup (while using Internet Explorer and after downloading an Adobe update) that said there was a security issue and that he needed to call a number for Windows Firewall Service.
(I looked up the number and apparently other people have been taken in by this scam. Here it is on a Microsoft forum:

PowerPoint Virus

Microsoft A new virus has Microsoft warning its customers of their computer’s possible vulnerability. The virus takes advantage of a shortcoming in Microsoft’s PowerPoint software’s security and allows attackers to remotely control a user’s computer.
The virus is activated when a user opens a PowerPoint e-mail attachment, PowerPoint file provided by the attacker, or when they visit a website that includes and embedded PowerPoint presentation. Once activated, the virus installs a program to log all keystrokes, and also leaves the computer open to allow a hacker to install other programs.

"It installs a backdoor and allows for all types of software to be downloaded on the computer and the computer can be remotely controlled," said Alfred Huger, a security expert at Symantec Corp.

PowerPoint 2000, 2002, and 2003 are all susceptible to attacks. Microsoft has reported a limited number of attacks. They have announced that they are working on a fix for the flaw in PowerPoint, which will be finished on or before August 8th, as part of regular monthly security updates.

My problem with my Inspiron 14R N4110 is: the laptop failed to boot, complaining disk error.  I tried the recovery disk, but it did not help.  The laptop is still in its 1-year hardware warranty.
I bought the laptop in US and I am in Canada.  Do I have to ship it back to US for repair?  Could Dell Canada repair it for me?
The DELL Tech Support online chat does not work for me, as I am in Canada and I bought my laptop in Staples of NY, US last summer. I tried to call 1-800-847-4096 (Canada tech support number), and after over 40 minutes waiting and 3 helpless agents transfering my calls around, the phone was eventually transferred to a deadend and cut-off.
The worst tech support I ever experienced!!!
I know this forum may not be the best place, but I do not want to waste my time on phone.  Is there a DELLsupport email address for me to contact the tech support by email?

I don't know how many people have had an issue with the phone call from tech support and they want access to your computer and then they essentially lock it and you need a password to get access again and the only way to get the password is to pay them.
A friend called tonight and she was taken in by the scam. Her immediate concern was to get her pictures and other personal documents off of the computer. I have no idea what these people do or if it is just a matter of getting the password and once input everything is okay?
Anyway I took her drive out and connected it to my computer and copied off all of her personal data to a flash drive. I ran Malwarebytes and selected only drive E, which is her drive, but the only problems it showed were on Drive C. I have no idea how it detected issues on Drive C as I had unselected Drive C and only selected Drive E for a scan.
So the first question is, is there a way around the password and to be able to remove it without reinstalling the OS. or recovering from a set of recovery disks?
Second is there a way to access the control panel on her drive with it still being connected to my computer to make a recovery disk for her drive, as like most people she didn't bother making a recovery disk set so if it has to be reformatted and the OS reinstalled she has no disks? It has a partition on the drive which I assume may the recovery information but the only visible folders are system volume information and recycle bin and I do have the appropri... Read more

Microsoft Warns Of Tech Support Phone Scam
I know this has been circulating for a while but my mother received a phone call while i was there .
I took the phone away from her and talked with the man to find out what was going on .

He would not take no for an answer
even when i told him that there was no computer at this address he insisted on retelling me he was from microsoft tech support and that the ip had been flashing red at their end and that it was a virus problem .
Even after i had repeated that there was no computer to get infected he said when i read my emails all lights were flashing at their end

Now if this post stops one pc user from falling for this scam then i will be happy

Hi All,

I just recently got my laptop back from Toshiba. It had a shorted out the power supply. After I bought a new identical power supply it got really hot and cracked the screen. I had it on a cooler master stand with 3 adjustable 80mm fans blowing at full speed underneath it. I thought it was going to catch on fire so I moved it off the stand after unplugging it. It was very hot and when I let go of it, it got a small dent in the lid along with the cracked screen.

So I contacted Toshiba's main office to see if the would either replace or repair it. I bought it in November of 2012.

They sent a box to send it to them and requested I take off my thin silicone keyboard protector and send them the new power supply I just bought for about \$60.00. I packaged it up very carefully as it was spotless just like when I first bought it. I did replace a hard drive that had failed prematurely with a Plextor MP3 Pro 128 gb. SSD and moved the Seagate 750 gb. hybrid as my secondary / backup drive

My credit card company matched the original warranty so it is about to expire next week

When I got the laptop back Toshiba they replaced the screen but not the lid as I requested. They also left out the rubber plugs that cover up the screws when they cleaned and reapplied the thermal paste on the CPU

Do you have any suggestions on how I can get them to replace the lid and rubber plugs as well as reimburse me for the cost of the power supply? I need to contact them Monday morning then ca... Read more

have gotten a very very bad virus and tried installing all possible things to delete and nothing has worked in fact one of them (stopzilla) has caused my computer to give the the blue screen of death after the start up i turn on my computer and about 30 seconds after i get the blue screen of death

before you give me any antivirus software download remember that i only have appx. 30 second to get on the internet find the site and download it

i have tried on safe mode and i cant even go onto the internet

i have now tried this i turned on my windows vista home basic dell 6450 special edition computer and then press f11 right away i clicked advanced options and clicked resoter computer to an earlier point in time i clicked next and clicked the one from about 4 days ago before i had any problems now the problem i am having is i cant click the check box for recovering HP_RECOVERY (D or boot (x which i am not sure if is a problem or not
now i am kinda a computer guy and typically something with the letter x has importance (eg direct X, xp, and other stuff) i am not sure i could just not check it and still have my computer working fine PLEASE HELP!

Im new here but if anything has ''x'' for example Generic PUP.x ITS BAD! i suggest u try if can find the file folder in question and scan with McAfee and then either remove it if u can or just shred it. This probably didnt help much ...sorry : /
