The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas? A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19295458.aspx http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/18112824/18235810.aspx#18235810 Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers. HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas? 1 more replies Answer Match 55.86% Hello! I got myself an Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ condenser microphone a few weeks ago, and I haven't really found out how I can change the gain, which I hear is important to do. There is only one slider where the gain slider also should have been. The mic doesn't have a gain know like some other microphones have. As you can see there is one slider. It only changes volume as far as I know. How can I change the gain, is it needed, or can I maybe control gain using the volume slider? If I can't change it directly through the mic or through the control panel, how can I change it? D: Thanks in advance! A:Can't control gain! No slider in control panel! I have a recording studio (Sonar X3) and use several AT mics but they are not USB mics (such as the AT2035 and AT2050). "Volume level" is the same as "gain". You can adjust the "Volume Level" or you can adjust the "gain" - both are the same thing. On mixers, amplifiers, etc, some will call the volume control "level" and others "gain". A USB mic should have its own listing in the Sound/Recording Panel. Whatever slider that is has, such as what you show, should adjust the volume level. I was browsing the web searching for a medicine properties and I guess it was when the virus entered my computer. It has been almost 4 weeks now. The virus was a Trojan (Winavxxx or something like that), it appeared as a yellow triangle with "!" sign in the middle resembling windows alerts; alerting me of potential spyware action. Minutes later a pop-up appeared and if I click on it (which I did by mistake, was chatting and hit the enter key when it poped-up) it will re-direct me to a home page which I never used. I also got my homepage changed (hijacked) to google. I had tried various anti-virus softwares (Norton, AVG, McAfee) and it didn't detect the Trojan nor it avoided its entrance. Now I have Avast! I have tried many things to kill the virus and work normally. I downloaded SPYNOMORE (by that time I was aware of the Trojan and its big power), I had to re-start my computer and then all got worse. When I started in Safe Mode, I was not able to see the Control Panel icon anymore. I tried to uninstall the SPYNOMORE but it didn't let me do it since I was working in Safe Mode. Finally I downloaded SPYBOT SEARCH&DESTROY, and run it. It found many undesirable files and removed them. Same thing with SPYWARE TERMINATOR, it found many problems and claimed it had solved them. You might try the system file checker to see if you have corrupted files.

To run System File Checker

Click on Start then Run. In the Run box, type sfc /scannow and then OK.

Hi..Today I had my control panel become unusable, whenever I clicked on anything...it says I basically lost my Admin on my account. I also kept getting this stupid pop up every 10 minutes..so I ran all my programs...ad-aware, spybot, avast, registry cleaner, etc...it got rid of all the viruses, and all the spy-ware...so no more popups, slow internet, etc..thats all gone. The problem I'm having now, is that my control panel is completely gone...and when I type in "control.exe", the error I was getting before comes up...saying I'm restricted from opening it...however, I can open add/remove programs and the system info...

I was reading other posts in these forums, so I downloaded HiJack This...and here is the Log from that:

I hope I guessed correctly if I did not please post again with the error message or question that you wish answered.

i have had multiple problems with spyware and malware, and i feel like i have finally got rid of the majority of them. There is still one major problem and that is, i cant open the control panel and access my computers properties. when i ran spybot, one of the problems that appeared was;

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-36167722-1870316175-1833586310-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoControlPanel!=W=0

would it be alright to simply delete that file?

i've gone through the registry and changed the binary value to 0 and i've been able to access the control panel after restarting. however, after awhile it just changes back to 1.

also, almost everytime i turn on my computer i get a warning that says "C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe" cannot be found.

Hi, bballpaulwall.

Welcome to TSG.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Note: In the event you already have Vundofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.

A:Help can't use the control panel

Hi and welcome

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
...
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I'm helping my husband with this issue, so I might not have all of the details, however, I'll do my best to describe the problem.
1. It started with a pop-up for Spyware.
2. No Control Panel
3. Disabled Norton
4. Installed Spy Sweeper
5. The pop-up stopped, but Still No Control Panel

I know that this problem has previously been solved for other users, but it appears to require a tech person to check various logs unique to the particular computer to insure that the pc is free of all viruses.

Can you help me?

Hello,
I am running XP on a Dell laptop. Just recently, when I try to open Control Panel, it starts to open, then all of the icons and toolbars on the desktop disapear sor a second, then everything reapears and the Control Panel has not opened. If I reboot, I can get to the Control Panel for one or two tries, the the same as above all over again. This seemed to all start when I was trying to set up a parallel-to-USB printer cable, but that could be coincidental.
I think the laptop has Service Pack 2, but I do not have it in front of me to confirm. Can anyone send me in a direction to start investigating the problem?

Thank you for your help and thanks to all the folks that make this such a great board. I have been "lurking" for a while and have been very impressed with the level of help available.

Hello and welcome to TSF

Let's try to get a GMER log. You must have extracted gmer.exe to your desktop for this to work.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into Notepad:

Quote:

@echo off
copy /y gmer.exe omer.exe
start omer

Save this as run.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files" next to gmer.exe
It should look like this:
Double-click run.bat & allow it to run.

Then, use these settings to produce a log.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click NO.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it to your next reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

Ok well I have let this problem sly for a bit after removing some malware awhile back ago. Everything seemed fine but the Control Panel. It is disabled for the most part and can't use any of the tools inside it. It tells me "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." This is the only problem that I still have an issue with after the removal of the malware, so I believe a certain something was not removed. Any support? Thanks.

Ok guys - I got nailed by Winavxx.exe. After running serveral Programs to remove my problem SuperAntispyware tells me I have a clean system but I don't have access to the control panel. Spy Sweeper tells me that CTFMON.EXE is trying to start(dont know what that is.) Haven't done anything with it. I have included the log from Hijack This. ANy Help would be great. _ thanks in advance.

I'm reading this book and it shows me what the control panel looks like in Windows 8 but I sure can't get to it. My control panel looks just like the one in Windows 7?

A:Control Panel

I'm sure that came from the DP. All that is now under 'More PC Settings' available at the bottom of the screen when you view the Settings charm from the Metro Start screen.

I wrote most of this yesterday (11/06) and posted it to another help forum where it hasn't been responded to. I've added a bit more info today. I found this forum and HOPE someone here can help us out.

My husband clicked on 'ok' when a pop-up came up saying updates were available for Netscape...guess it wasn't from Netscape I found this out after I had done some of the things I've done.

McAfee found 10 or so trojans and was only able to quarintine and/or remove two.

Last week I had a problem and was instructed by McAfee to uninstall then reinstall my McAfee program, which I did and it repaired the problem. So I uninstalled it again...but cannot get the McAfee website to load now .(I called a friend and they could get it no problem, so the issue is my computer). ...and I use the downloaded version so have no disk.

Before I uninstalled McAfee I did write down a few of the things it said (but not all. duh)
proper.exe
winter.exe
porkaa.exe
e ...that's all it said: e
McAfee popped up saying both porkaa and e were requesting access to the internet. I blocked access to porkaa no prob...but when I blocked e the screen went blue and read
"dump to disk1
dump to disk 2"
I cut the power and rebooted.

McAfee said last update was on 10/29..think that was when I had un/reinstalled the program. Automatic updates were supposed to happen.

the following are all applications that were created 11/06:
wesre
wetre
winter
xlavba8
proper
porkaa
levro

I'm operating Vista and i have downloaded and installed the latest update. My control panel when it is set on "Control Panel Home" I see all the icons System & Maintenance, Security, etc but if i click on any a blank page comes up saying "There are no items to display". Everything is there in classic view and works, I like using the other version but have no idea whats happened.

I keep reading this messages in the forum about the control panel that disappears. Why is that? I was attacked by a troyan and some malware but it's ok now...I think. My AVG Antivirus deleted the malware, Super antispyware removed the tracking cookies and I have Eusing registry cleanup which has tune up my laptop and is running smoothly. However...my Control Panel is still gone
I was told to go with regedit and change some settings there...it looks easy but...after I read the posts here I think about going the safe way. What would you recommend? My laptop runs fine now and is well protected (Comodo firewall is doing a great job) But I need my Control Panel!!! Any suggestions?

A:Why is my control panel gone?

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

* Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Help!
Like a few guys before me I have picked some malware (these scumbags suck our precious air) that denies access to the Control Panel and I get the message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions.............Please refer to System Administrator" I am Sys. Admin. (stand alone pc). I have reset the settings for NoControlPanel in my registry and tried to open control.exe, which gave me same message. (These suggestions I found on an earlier thread). Tried everything (except putting an axe through the box), still get this same error message and I'm still locked out. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

A:how can i fix the way my control panel looks?

Go up to View>Click on Status Bar
If you want it to show for all folders(like I do)then go up to
Tools/Folder Options/View tab/Apply to All Folders/Apply/Ok

Edit: Oops, you mean Toolbar. Not sure about that.
I'll check around unless someone else chimes in pretty quick.

my dad's computer is totally messed up. there is no control panel button on the start up menu and you can't change the time. if you click on the time, it says "restrictions: this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. please contact your systems administrator."

he gets tons of random popups and things that i have deleted off of his desktop are back, and since there is no control panel, i can't get to add/remove programs.

It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi CBWEB! Welcome to SevenForums! If it's Font's you need that folder address is C:\Windows\Fonts

I don't think that the Control Panel even has an address.

Thanks,
