I updated my Window 7 Ultimate today, and now when my computer reboots, it stops at the login screen. It used to just boot into my desktop and bypass the login screen. This is annoying because I use my tablet's wifi to check on and access things on my computer. If I have to go back to the desk to login, it kind of defeats the entire "mobile" computing thing I had going.
Does anyone know how to change that setting? And why did Microsoft change it?

A:Windows update changed login settings

It might be that the auto log on setting has been changed. See this tutorial to learn how to auto log on to your Windows: Log On Automatically at Startup

I Installed Office 2010 and this changed my Windows Update Settings Permanently.
I know it was due to some option I choose in the Office Installation ( cannot remember the name ), as I was able to avoid this issue with another Installation of Office 2010.
I want to reset my Windows Update to my previous setting prior to Office 2010 installation.
I have always chosen the Windows Update Option "Let me know of updates but chose when to download and install "
After installation of Office 2010 this is now set to "Never Check for updates" and the box is greyed out with no option to change and also now says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator". This was never the case prior to the Office 2010 install. Now I have to manually check for updates.
I have ran all the MS Fix It tools, etc and nothing has resolved issue.
I have now removed MS Office 2010 and the problem still remains.

That looks like the screen you get from an Standard User account, rather than an Admin account.

I can tell you categorically that Office didn't make the changes you're seeing there. It may however be malware.

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Hi,

Has anybody else noticed this on their WIndows 7 Computer?

A few days ago I went to switch off my laptop and noticed the little yellow shield on the "Shut Down" button.

Today, by chance, I noticed that the Windows Updates were set to "Automatically download and Install".

This is NOT MY setting........ I've told Win7 (as with other versions) to "Check and Notify"

Now my PC is waiting for me to turn off the computer so that it can install .........I don't know what.

How can I stop it install something that I didn't ask it to?
Anybody else have this problem recently?

Thanks

A:Has Microsoft Changed my update settings?

Within windows update in control panel is there any option to cancel, there generally will be at the time when updates are being downloaded but I'm not sure if there is still such an option for cancellation after download has finished and updates are waiting for a restart so they can install. It might be that the only possible method is to restart then find out afterwards what was installed and remove it then. But I suggest you try to wait longer and see if anyone can give further advice. Maybe if the updates are stored somewhere on the system before installng their files could be renamed or something s they wouldn't be installed, But I cannot be sure if this would work, it might instead damage important system files severely.
If you had a system image you could restore to that, but it would be easiest to first allow the restart, see what updates they were and remove them that way instead, most of the time updates can be removed like this, a system mage would only be needed for the few updates which cannot.
The below concerns your problem in general, and is more a guide to working out why windows update's settings changed and stopping it happeneing again. The below won't very likely be of help in dealing with your present situation where you have updates already downloaded and waiting fro restart.
On the subject of the update settings being changed I have heard of this before, but never seen it personally. I can quite imagine how dangerous this could be, updates are somethin... Read more

Windows 10 Pro x64 laptop had updates set to automatically download and then notify. (Still using v. 1511 build 10586 due to continuing reported issues with 1607.) No problems with any updates prior to Oct 2016.

Oct 11 cumulative update KB3192441 apparently failed and gave notice it would "automatically retry later". Download failed again on Oct 12, 13 and 14. Went to Microsoft Update Catalog and downloaded/installed KB3192441 without any apparent issues. But when I opened Settings > Update & security, I saw a brand new notice that "Some settings are managed by your organization" (see screenshot.)

Q1: Why did this happen?

Q2: How do I regain full control over future updates since this laptop is not part of an "organization"?

NOTE: I tried modifying Windows Update settings using this tutorial. No effect on removing the "Some settings are managed by your organization" notice.

Windows Update Automatic Updates - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I also tried using three System Restore Points and two System Images all made prior to Oct 11. They did not have any success in removing the notice. It reappeared as soon as I clicked the "Check for updates" button.

(BTW, going thru the Microsoft Update Catalog resulted in a download of 1.03GB and took almost 6 hours to complete. I understand that MS wants people to have all released updates but this cumulative concept really stinks. End of rant.)

A:October2016 Cumulative Update Changed Settings

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:

reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f
reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /f
reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f

Note, that it will probably appear again, it is related to some Windows Update/Insider settings.

Yep, doing a reset at boot would most likely be in order then.

First let me describe the problem:
All of my Windows Explorer settings appear to be stuck at the defaults. If I go to Tools>Folder options... and change them, the change does not take effect, and if I open the menu again, the check boxes are back to the same state as before.
When I right-click in empty space, my New menu is empty.
Also, if I try to drag a shortcut to the taskbar, or pin an item to the start menu, nothing happens.
Now this all started after removing a piece of beta software (being developed at my employer) using the add/remove programs list (my mistake). It apparently corrupted the registry, causing a bluescreen at boot. I let the system do the auto repair, which
got me able to boot again, but with the problems noted above.
My next action was to try System Restore to bring me back to a state a few days back. Unfortunately, the restore failed, and upon going back into System Restore, I found all of my restore points had disappeared (!).
I next exited Windows and replaced (after making backups) DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM in Windows/System32/config/ with the copies in RegBack. After rebooting, this did not seem to change anything.

Any ideas about how I might still get my old settings back or at least be able to change them again? I was hoping to avoid reinstalling Windows.

A:Windows Explorer settings can't be changed

One important question: If I have resized my disk partitions since I made a System Image with the backup utility in Windows, will I still be able to use the image?

The native image creation tool was Microsoft's first stab at such a facility. The good news is that it's free. The bad news is that it is temperamental, unreliable and that it lacks the functionality that we take for granted with similar but mature products.
Example: it will not restore partitions where the target is smaller than the original partition. But give it a try anyway - I might be wrong.

Dear Reader,

My problem occurred when I booted my Windows 7 laptop yesterday (HP), and saw after logging in that my desktop background had reset itself to the factory default. Also, the shortcuts present on the desktop were also different from before, and some files (documents) I had placed on the desktop were not there. The Quick Launch bar was also empty except for Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. When I ran some programs (Firefox, VLC media player) I got some screens saying 'this program is not your default program for ... ' as if I ran them for the first time.

When opening Windows Explorer, I also found the quick access 'Libraries' were all empty. I checked C:/Users/Myname and found all my files there as usual (thankfully), but something is clearly out of the ordinary. It's almost as if I have logged into a different account on the same computer, which is not the case as there is just one (with Admin rights).

Thinking this may have been the results of a virus/malware, I have run a full system scan with AVG and MalwareBytes. AVG removed a few things tagged as 'tracking cookies' and MalwareBytes removed 2 undesirable registry entries tagged 'non-malware'.

Can anyone tell me what may have happened to my computer? And how I can reverse it?

(I can check if it is done automatically, but I do not make system restoration points regularly. Which may be unwise, but I do not use this laptop very often.)

Thank you for any advice!

Hi.
I was changing some settings in msconfig yesterday. The parameters I changed is:
Timeout: 0
No GUI boot: Checked
Number of processors: 8 (I think this was unnecessary since it's already booting up using all cores/threads. But it shouldn't cause a error even if I changed it manually.
Now, when I'm trying to boot up my PC I'm just receiving a BSOD. I've tried to use both "Normal mode", Safe mode and the last working configuration, but none works. I've also tested to do system repair but it just gives me some kind of error that it couldn't be completed. Sadly, I've disabled the System Backup/Restore, so I can't do that either!

Right now I've started the command prompt from the "System Recovery Options" and I think this is the only way for me to fix this.

So what I wonder now, is if there's any way to reset the settings in msconfig to the default through the command prompt, or maybe there's another way I can try to fix this? I don't feel like re-installing Windows once again.

Best regards,
Flaxe

Why in God's name did you do this??

That was likely a fatally wrong assumption...

What were you trying to achieve with this? The timeout has no effect unless you multi-boot and have a boot menu, and No GUI boot only means no graphical moving bar during startup.

EDIT: You might be able to fix this by editing the Windows registry offline. Look for the settings you changed in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment

In particular, you'll want to change NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS back to 2 (assuming you have a dual-core CPU).

Three or four times now when I sign in to my account I have found that all my folder settings will have been changed eg Thumbnail settings changed to list or icons. Also my desktop background will have changed colour and my shortcuts rearranged and repositioned. I also found that my settings etc on Messenger have been altered. My sound settings also changed from Philips SoundAgent 2 to Philips Wave Device. Hi,
I've not installed any new software or hardware but when I've turned my computer on this morning Windows is running pathetically slow (takes 3 minutes for My Computer and other folders on the desktop to load up).
I've looked in MSCONFIG to see if there are any extra processes running and nothing out of the ordinary stands out, in the task bar manager there is no program hogging the resources but the hard-drive light is continually on and you can hear it working away rapidly in the case.
One other thing which is slightly puzzling me - when I went to go to Help and Support it said that the service had been switched off. I know i didnt do this. And when I enabled it and finally got on to the system restore wizard it was saying that no system restore points had been set up (I know they have). Also firefox had lost all its bookmarks and plugins etc so now I'm a bit confused.

I've scanned in AVG anti-virus
Lavasoft Adaware
Spybot search n destroy
and they have all shown nothing.

Below is the Hijackthis log. Any help is definately appreciated on this one!!

A:Windows running slow and many settings changed!! HELP!!

You have a lot of un-necessary crap.

That list should be 1/10 of that size.
Your system is bloated with un-necessary processes running in the background, all fighting for cpu time. Uninstall and remove startup items, trial and error. AVG does a version check at each boot by default, which can stall the system. Your at a gridlock in my opinion.

Hi

I have been incredibly stupid and changed the settings in my BIOS setup. What is even more stupid is I did this by making it "Load Optimal Defaults" so I dont actually know what has been changed.

As a result of this windows 7 now cannot start, it brings you to the error fixing part where it searches for errors, cant find any and offers you some more options including system restore. Ive done a system restore but that has also not fixed it. I have little idea how to fix this, windows 7 was working perfectly until I changed the BIOS, but not knowing what was changed means I cant change it back.

The BIOS version is: 4core1600twins-p35 p1.40

Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thank you very much!

Rhodri

A:Changed BIOS settings now Windows 7 wont start

Hi Rhodri and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

This should be quite easy to fix. All you need to do is to reset the BIOS to its defaults. Boot up and enter your BIOS. You are looking for an option to reset it to its defaults (this is NOT the same as Optimal Defaults). Alternatively, remove and replace the motherboard battery - this will cause all settings to be lost from the BIOS, so you need to make a note of your current settings on a piece of paper so that you can restore them afterwards. This will include the date and time. For details on how to do this, the location of the battery and whether or not there is a motherboard jumper that accomplishes the same thing, see your motherboard manual. Please ensure that your system is unplugged from the mains whilst you do this.

Hello,

I have been using WLM 2011 for a couple of years now. Everything was good until last Thursday. I opened WLM and got an error about login failed. After checking my account settings, I noticed everything was now set up as IMAP. I called my ISP and they confirmed it was supposed to be POP3.

So... can I reset the account back to POP3 without losing my mail?

I did do a system restore back to a point a couple of days before this happened. No change.

November 4th at about 7am I went to a website that I recently signed up on called Triond. I clicked to view one of my articles they published on another site. As soon as the page loaded it said "adobe flash needs to update" and it looked just like it always does so I clicked ok.

I then got the System Restore virus, it hid all of my files and was also playing audio ads in the background of my computer even after closing IE.

What I have done already:

Malwarebytes: finds nothing
StopZilla: Finds over 100 errors but I can't afford to pay for it
Advanced system care: finds nothing
SuperAntiSpyware: finds only tracking cookies and deletes them
Spybot search and destroy: finds nothing
Rkill: will only run in safe mode but then all of the above will not find anything to kill (I've changed the name, changed the location to save it, etc it will download and then when I click open or run as administrator it disappears and says the file location does not exist)

I did "unhide" all my files and folders and programs.

I did find a walkthrough that told me what registry items to delete and I deleted them.

I have also went through the stop zilla errors and deleted some of the registry things they say were viruses (probably not a very good idea, but I am desperate)

I have tried to do a real system restore in both regular and safe mode. I have also tried the advanced recovery, but my laptop doesn't have a disk drive so I can't reinstall windows.

Well I didn't get the time to update windows during july, I decided to do this today, but windows update was stuck at installing. I searched this forum because in may there was an update for windows update agent which I had to install manually to get windows update working again. While searching I got a mention of KB3172605. I installed it and hoped that this will make it work again. But it isn't still working now. I used to use windows auto update, but due to the windows 10 massacre I decided to do it manually. Now every other day it stops working. It's annoying that i have to pamper it this much. I will be glad to have any help, thank you.

- Windows Update for Win 7 is still a mess. MS seems to be very busy with Win 10.
- I never use the "Automatic" for Windows Update (WU). I don't want MS' WU messing up my system.
- What do you mean by "now every day it stops working" ?
- Try this first:

It contains instructions on how to fix this Windows Update problem. It worked for me. But your system could have more WU related problems.

It's a pretty simple password that I would not forget. So I get back and boot up my pc and login typing in my new password and it worked fine. Next day I notice windows is about to install some updates and I think nothing of it. When I come back I see it restarted and now I can't login. I've tried both my old and new password and nothing seems to work. I don't have a windows vista disk because it already came installed. I don't have a password recovery disk either. Just posting as a warning to others (and to vent my annoyance a bit)

I always set up my Windows update settings to "check and notify but don't download and install unless I tell you to" to prevent HDD thrashing, performance downgrading at the worst possible times and annoying "oh, you need to restart" notifications.

All working fine... but yesterday I notice some random and annoying HDD thrashing, bit later on the windows update restart notification wants to restart the computer ... what ?

It turns out my update settings had been reset to "automatically download and install (recommended)" without my knowledge and express permission. I was not amused .

And no, nobody else but me has access to the computer, much less someone who knows from where the windows update settings can be modified. And I doubt any malware/virus would be interested in keeping my windows up to date automatically.

Don't know what exact update caused it, but I know I will disable all windows updates if this happens again.

I prefer the control panel versions too, just right click action center flag icon choose Open Windows Update and away we go. What nerves me with the immersive version is looking at the history, it's much easier to read in the control panel version. I guess that's why the registry hack came out so quick in 10TP.

Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

Hello
Have a problem wonder if anyone could assist. Did an update on windows vista with service pack 2 and the display has changed. The picture in the middle is not filling the screen and the icons have moved. When you open any windows they are far to big for the screen. Have tried changing screen manually with the buttons on the front. (sorry this is a desktop), but all it did was move it one way, I managed to get the start button to show, but now the other end of the task bar is missing. Any windows that are open are to big for the screen. Looked in display drivers and a scan tells me the driver is up to date.
I have been having trouble with windows update, it kept hanging on installing before, Now it says there's no updates, but it had some optional ones, so installed them and now we have the problem as stated above.
Tried system restore and it was unsuccessful, on both attempts.
Thanking you in advance for your assistance

I ignored this issue until about a month later when i had enough, i went to my control panel and stopped windows from automatically updating . This has given me serious issues and now i cannot complete simple tasks without the application stopping responding or freezing my computer completely. Also i can only shut my computer down by pressing the power buttom on the case as otherwise it goes through the normal process but then leaves me with a black screen and just my cursor. I cannot change my windows update back to automatically update as my control panel will just become iresponsive. I have had windows update set to check for updates and notify me so I can choose when, or in some cases if, to install them. This evening, I checked and the option had been changed to automatically install all updates.

Anyone else experienced this or have a clue how it could have happened?

A:Solved: Windows Update Options Changed

Not much help but, fwiw, I have, from time to time, experienced it, but of recent months, not ever. Outside possibility is that it could be an attempt to plant unwanted garbage on the computer, but when I did experience it, I didn't notice any following problems.

Hello!
I really really need your help!
My screen display is changed after a windows update. It's not as crisp and bright as before but is a bit blurry and hurts the eye. @[email protected]

I have re-installed the latest driver of NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS but with no changes...
Device manager displays NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS under Display Adapters..
I have fiddled with NVIDIA Control Panel with no good result. T_T

I tried doing system restore but i did not have any restore points created ever which is a FAIL...
Moreover, when I check Screen Resolution, only display option is 1. Display device on: VGA .... Isn't this supposed to include NVIDIA options?

Monitor driver SyncMaster 732NW is updated as well..

I hope you can help me with this.
Thank you!

Hi. After getting my wife's laptop with Win 7 Pro to run it's updates again after a week's worth of struggling with that, she opened an existing LARGE spreadsheet to find that all the green cell contents were now blue, and the cells with $ formatting were now general format again !! Not a happy camper !
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this after Windows Updates ? Could something have affected the palette settings for the colors ? Over 120 updates (mix of security, Office 10, net frame etc.) were done so a little tough to identify the potential culprit.

Thanks for any insight.

A:Excel cell formats changed after Windows Update

No, I've never seen that. I have a bunch of color-coded Excel stuff, but updates have never affected it.

You may have to do a System Restore to a time before the updates, if you'd rather give up the updates than deal with the Excel issues. I assume the Excel formatting issues can't be easily corrected.

In various posts on Microsoft forcing us towards Win10 upgrade, I couldn?t find anyone describing the actual harm KB2952664 is doing to the system. Is just that people are being annoyed with something being installed, but they don?t exactly know what it is doing? Or people experience system being much slower? Or something else?

I?ll try to describe my problem linked to Win10 push by MS.

After installing a number of updates that accumulated over past six or so weeks, my Windows Update screen (Windows 7) changed appearance. That Windows Update screen used to show available updates ? important and optional. You would then click on a link that would show the whole listing of available updates. You would be able to select KBs that you want, OK it, and when back into Windows Update screen, run/execute whatever KBs you selected in the previous screen.

With recent KB installs, that Windows Update screen doesn?t show any more available updates ? important and optional. Instead, in that space it says ?Upgrade to Windows 10?. Where button to install updates used to be, now there is button that says ?Get started?, indicating that you would start upgrade to Win10.

Under that box, there is a link that says ?Show all available updates?. When I click on it, I do get familiar screen, with all available (Win7) updates. If I select any of those updates and go back to initial Windows Update screen, I see again ?Upgrade to Windows 10? and not what used to be (from memory): e.g. ? 12 imp... Read more

I finally got windows to update. Everything was great. I changed the settings to "Let me choose..... ". Everything was still great. Then I unticked the box about getting Microsoft Software updates because I didn't think I would need software updates. It flashed a warning at me but I thought it was just about the software so hit OK anyway. I then lost the last two boxes you normally see on that update page. Got them back by installing Silverlight again. Have them ticked again. But now, when I go to the Windows Update page it constantly shows me a big red X. I got to change settings and put it to fully automatic, hit ok... but it won't save that change. It shows me the red X again.

Yet, when I look at the GWX panel it shows I have updates set on Automatic (photos attached). So I have no idea what is going on. I"ve tried a few fixes..... did a Windows update trouble shoot thing through Microsoft that said it had fixed 3 issues (don't know what now didn't take a screen shot sorry) and that made the update page look even worse. Now is says I've never updated etc (photo attached). I even saw a post about doing something in the registry but when I got to the right place my computer didn't even display the two things supposedly it should have so I couldn't do the last two steps of that post (from Win 7 Forums) Please Help.

My Google search screen no longer has a search button. Just says click enter.
My Yahoo mail is all spread out and pale
My EBAY has small printing and formatting is different

UGH

Do you know what the default font name and size would have been? Maybe if I put it back.

Hi!

When I turned off my laptop yesterday evening the only thing I changed that day was a new automatic update of Firefox.

This morning my computer settings are all gone and two new users were created.
Not really new users - just two new folders appeared in Windows Explorer - name of my user name ("pc") and then additional: pc.PC-WO0373K371MS.000 and .001.

Outlook Express and Firefox and also several other programs are behaving as if they were just new installed - all my settings are gone (email connection, bookmarks, Firefox remembered passwords, OE folders+emails...).

I seem to remember that I had the same problem after the last automatic Firefox update and that I at that time painstakingly did change everything from scratch (localizing my lost OE folders+emails and import them etc.etc.etc.) but now I am really annoyed and think there might be an easier way to get my settings back?

System Restore did not work since I had never heard of it before and so I discovered that it was disabled...

Can somebody help?

Thanks,
Maria

I had to do an XP repair install. After doing it, all my desktop settings had changed and most of my programs were gone...or so I thought.

What has happened is that in "Documents and Settings" , a new user folder has been created "bullseye.NET1". The original folder "bullseye" is still there, along with all my programs that I thought were gone, and all of my setting, etc.

So when I boot the system, I am "Bullseye", but XP is loading to the new "bullseye.NET1" folder and settings instead of the "bullseye" folder and settings that it used to load before I did the repair install.....

Any ideas how to get XP to go back to the original folder?

Thanks in advance.

Trojan horse Downloader Zlob.ACZS

I have a Dell 1300 laptop running Xp with S.P. 2

I ran AVG Free ( it’s the only AV programme I have ) and found” Trojan horse Downloader Zlob.ACZS” which it put into the virus vault and I later deleted it when I found the machine ran just fine without it.
Before this post I have tried using Ad-Adware 2008,Spybot search and destroy, Housecall followed by McAfee Stinger nothing critical was found by those programs just Sptbot who found tracking cookies and a change to I.E’s security settings !!!…all put right or removed. I don't know what IE settings were changed I allowed Spybot to correct the prob

I have installed “Zone Alarms Firewall” before this I just relied on the Windows XP one.

The machine seems to be running ok but am I clean? Repeated AVG full computer scans show no threats, is there a Trojan Horse or something these programs can’t see ?

I enclose my HJT log and just hope someone can to help me.

Hi all
Can anyone help i switched my P.C off for the first time in weeks, and on starting it up i had a warning saying CPU settings may have been changed reset the CPU setting in the comos and save. can anyone tell me what this is. i then booted up in the last knowing safe restore point and it seems to be ok but have not switched it off since.

A:cpu settings changed

The CPU has changed messages usually pops up on ASUS motherboards and in many cases for no reason; its a glitch that ASUS is aware of. It can also happen if the power is lost or if the system is turned off while in the early stages of bootup. Go into the BIOS setup, usually DEL or F1 and then Save and Exit to clear the message. Generally there's no need to change anything. This is not linked to Windows in any way.

Hey everyone. First, thanks in advance for any possible help that you can offer. This problem started just last night. I was browsing a few tabbed websites last night while watching TV, and I turned away from my laptop. I turned back when I noticed that IE pop-ups started firing off pretty rapidly, maybe two or three a minute. I closed out Firefox and when I started it again, an AVG search bar (wasn't there before) was on my browser. That's the only change that I noticed with Firefox. IE pop-ups were still firing pretty frequently. I've restarted my laptop as well, and now AVG is eating up my CPU to 100% almost the entire time. The IE pop-ups are not appearing anymore, but it's only been maybe a half hour since the restart, so I won't neglect to mention it. I've since used HijackThis and removed one or two things that a friend of mine recommended, but I got nervous and decided to go to a forum instead for help.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention the AVG settings part. Now when I open AVG from my toolbar, there's no anti-spyware, no services at all showing. I try to start a scan, but the button does nothing to initialize a scan.

Hello-

I have two questions about windows update.

First is whether there is anyway to completely disable Windows update from bugging me about restarting my computer to install updates. I know about setting the interval to the max of 1440 in the group policy editor and I know how to manually kill the service with net stop wuauserv. Neither of those stop it from coming back completely.

The second is if there is anyway to unsubscribe from getting microsoft's monthy malware removal tool update. Seems trivial I know, but I get tired of hiding it.

Thank you

Hello livevil,

You could use the tutorial below to disable Windows Update automatic restart to let you manually restart when you're ready to. Windows Update - Enable or Disable Automatic Restart
It's would best to always install the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MRT) updates to help keep your system safer.

Hope this helps,

Several of the machines in our office have recently had the IP settings changed on local Area Connection options. We are running Windows XP.
This morning two of our machines could not connect to the internet or get email. So I checked the local area connection in "Network Connections" . I then went into "Local area connection properties" and highlighted Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and clicked on "properties".
There are 2 radio boxes at the bottom of the dialog box. One says, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and one says, "Use the following DNS server addresses".

Somehow this option was changed from, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server addresses".

Nobody in our office would know how to do this. How does this option get changed without someone manually clicking on it?
This happended a couple of weeks ago to another machine. Is this just some weird glitch that happens or could this be sabotage?
Thanks

Your in a corporate environment? I'd suggest a audit is in order. Review all activity and changes to the system since you think this occured.

Many things could have changed this, but really you need a networking person to ensure this isn't some patch problem.

When my Windows 8.1 desktop boots up, I like that it goes into the Modern UI menu first (that's
the way I have it set in the settings). I think the Modern UI looks cool.

But, when I am in desktop mode, I was missing the start menu so I tried the app. StartIsBack.

Gives a dandy start menu and seems to work excellent EXCEPT no matter what setting I change in
Windows, it boots directly into the desktop.

I might have to do a system restore to a recent backup, save the registry out, then install
StartIsBack and compare the two registry outputs for differences.

Anyone know of any other way besides the documented way (right click on the task bar, go to proerties
and tick or untick the box that says boot directly into desktop or however its worded) to get it to
boot into the Modern UI screen?

****Update*** I figured it out. Right click on the Start Orb and go into settings/properties. Doh!

Hello,

My 1 year old daughter has somehow changed the font settings in Internet Explorer from within Microsoft Word. Now whenever I go onto my favorite sites, the font is HUGE. How can I change it back?

A:font settings changed

No it was NOT within Word.

Are you seeing the whole screen or is it just ZOOMED up on?

Check the zoom setting in the lower right corner of the IE window.

Also check the font size selected under View, Text Size?

If this does not help, can you post a screen shot?

I was trying to increase the effective core speed on my computer. I tried to do it from my bios and did many changes in the settings by enabling each core.. Auto Overclock. and things like that.

Now when i saved and exit the computer is not even showing the bios screen, in fact it is not showing anything there is no signal from the computer's VGA port..

My DVD drive is not closing as a cd broke in it.. and when booting my pc just tries to close it but it opens once again and that's what's happening till now..
Rebooted for 3 times to no use please help...

A:changed BIOS settings..:((

You need to reset your BIOS to its defaults. The easiest way to do this is to remove and replace the motherboard battery (CR2032). Unplug your system from the mains supply and carefully remove the aforementioned battery. Wait approximately 5 mins to ensure that the procedure is successful, and then replace the battery and plug your system back into the mains. Switch on, and your BIOS should be reset.

As for your other problem, if resetting the BIOS hasn't sorted it (unlikely), then you will need to buy a replacement drive. These are relatively cheap and easy to install. Just make sure that you get one with a matching interface (SATA/PATA) to the existing unit.

I do a lot of AV system programming, which generally involves having to set my IP address for either my Ethernet port or WiFi card to manual IPs temporarily. I am having an issue on a relatively clean install of Win8 Pro that after I change my IP, when I go back into TCP/IP v4 to change it back to DHCP, it is already set to automatic... but if I right click on the connection icon and go to Status, it still has the static address. I tried to set it to another manual address and to hopefully go back in to revert, but that doesn't work.

The ONLY thing that seems to work is removing the NIC from Device Manager and then re-scanning for hardware changes where it will be automatically detected with DHCP enabled by default.

WiFi card is Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN.

Ethernet NIC is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57??.

I've got the latest available drivers, and using generic ones doesn't help. It's also on both NICs so I don't it is a driver issue.

Ideas?

Every now and then while I'm online, the Security Settings on Internet Explorer are set to the lowest level.

AVG found a java virus (Java/ByteVerify) and removed it. I also manually uninstalled Java Virtual Machine and deleted the directory that had contained the virus.

Since then, I've run a full scan with AVG Free, AdAware, Windows Defender and Spybot S&D. None of them find anything but the security level keeps changing by itself. It doesn't happen as soon as I go online, sometimes it takes ages before the Dell sytem monitor pops up and tells me what has happened.

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Hi All,

Need some help with IE (10) on Win7 64.
My colleague is trying to update the LAN settings in Internet Options so he can use it for homeworking. which requires the 'Auto Detect Settings' to be unchecked.
We can access the option and uncheck the box but as soon as you click ok, it instantly forgets and reverts back to the original settings that were in there. I've tried looking in registries for permissions, resetting IE etc but nothing seems to work.

Lists of suggestions will help, as most solutions I have seen have all been tried and failed.

Cheers

You are set to the highest color setting, 32bit color. You probably remember 65,536 or 16bit hi-color. You may also have a setting for 16,777,216 colors or 24bit color. In any case, right click on an empty area of the desktop, select properties, and the color depth is on the first screen, you can change the selection there.

I'm not sure where this should really be posted... if I knew then I'd probably not need to post it!

I encountered a strange problem recently and would be grateful for any comments.

An email client (Outlook Express) stopped baing able to receive email, complaining that it couldn't gain access to the POP3 server.

Exmaination showed that both the POP3 and SMTP server addresses had been set to 127.0.0.1 and that the port numbers had been changed from 25 to 5103 (SMTP) and from 110 to 5101 (POP3).

This was certainly not done by human intervention so can anyone shed any light on this?

I'd assume that since 5103 and 5101 are withing the registered port range, they have been assigned to a vendor but which one. I assume some application has performed this change for some reason and really need to find out what and why!

AdAware, etc. didn't come up with much although I'm still awaiting the HJT log to see what curious stuff is in there.

I'm running Vista and usually use Google Chrome as web browser and AVG free edition.

A few days ago, while browsing a window window popped up saying "Your browser is under threat of infections.Windows requires your permission to install online protection tools". Publisher: Microsoft windows. This looked suspicious to me so I only closed the window without allowing.
Since then, when I click on link the browser will open another page at random. (Same things happend whether in Chrome, Firefox or IE.) As an example, I can't attach a picture of the suspicious window. Everytime I click on the attachment button, the browser will take me to some google analytics web page.
Furthermore, I cannot access any Windows update website, nor Windows Defender. All attempt to update will generate an error (and sometimes will block my Internet connection for a few minutes.)
I Have downloaded Malwarebytes but was unable to update it for the same reasons.
I have scanned the computer with :
- AVG----->No results
- Mawarebytes-----> Found 2 Trojans but was unavle to clean
- SuperAntispyware-----> Only found tracking cookies

Hello
I used PC boost thinking it would speed up my computer.Fat chance!..
Does anyone know what are the normal settings for a Windows xp home with service pack 2?
I downloaded the service pack and reinstalled it over the old one,but it doesn't seem to fix my problem.
I can't use Real Player or Windows media player. That is not a real big problem as I have other players that do a good job.
The real problem is when I access a folder that I have in my E drive with more than 7 gb in it,I am sent back to the desk top without the icons. It seems that explorer cannot handle that.I have to use the task manager to re-open explorer.
I know I should have backed up these settings before I ran PC booster!...

Hello all, my question involves two OS's on the same P4 box, both are XP Pro SP3.

The problem started with a P2P virus on OS1. I cleared up the bug with Norton AV. OS1 can no longer access the internet via browser. Firefox and explorer both show "No Internet Connection" standard splash screens. OS1 is able to connect to P2P internet via Azureus. OS2, a clean install, connects to the internet via browser and P2P just fine. So, what gives? Which setting got changed to allow P2P and not HTTP on OS1?

Thanks in advance!

No, nothing specific, but I'd recommend that you keep your backups current and on another media. Things like this can happen and never reoccur. Then again...it can go down permanently and you'll be glad you heeded the warning.

Just to be certain you don't have unwelcome guests, post your HiJackThis log in Security forum and have the experts check it. You might have some Trojan or other malware that escaped your AV scan. It happens.

Good luck.

This morning I found myself unable to access any https sites. I tracked the problem down to the fact that somehow my network settings had been changed to connect via a proxy. Once I deselected this option, I was able to connect again without any problems. I have been advised by the technical support desk at my ISP that this is often caused by malware, and that it means that the offenders can potentially skim important log-in information. I have done a series of scans, but I am unable to tell if the results show anything significant or not.

I have run full scans using Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, Hitman Pro and ADWCleaner.

Malwarebytes reported no malware but one PUP - PUP.Optional.Spigot

Microsoft Security Essentials and Hitman Pro reported no threats.

The ADWCleaner log is posted below.

Is anyone able to tell me if I am likely to have been compromised in any way, and if there is any further action I should take?

I run Windows 7 64 Home Premium. My security setup is Malwarebytes Home Premium, Microsoft Security Essentials, Hitman Pro (paid version), Windows Firewall.

Hello,
I'm running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, with all Windows updates and Kaspersky Internet Security installed and updated. We suddenly started getting a phishing warning message every time my husband tried to log on to his Outlook Web Application from home.
I use Outlook that's part of Office 2010. I checked the status of SSL/TLS settings of the Internet Explorer browser, and discovered that only TLS 1.0 was checked.
I read on blogs.msdn.com (published 11/13) that TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are enabled by default on Internet Explorer 11. I haven't been tinkering with these settings. BTW, TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are all checked/enabled in my husband's user account settings,
and in those of the Administrator account. It's only mine that are different, and I am the main user of this computer. What could possibly have changed these settings? I don't run anything in Compatibility Mode.
I have run a full scan in Kaspersky Internet Security, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the Microsoft Safety Scanner, AKA the Microsoft Emergency Response Tool. Nothing shows anything amiss. nstat -ano shows no rogue connections on
the network.
Is the change in these settings something to be concerned about? Should we have TLS 1.0 disabled due to BEAST? I appreciate your help and advice.

Ok so I recently reinstalled windows and upgraded to windows 8.1 and ever since I did all the updates something is changing my windows update settings. I keep the settings to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download them or install them" but something keeps changing it back to "Never check for updates". At first I thought it was just after a reboot but today it happened multiple times. I installed winpatrol to see if I could see what was making this change but all I get is a warning saying a change has been detected. I have already done virus scan(I am using bit defender total security), also used malwarebytes and superanitspyware for scans but no viruses or anything. I will attach the screen shot to what it looks like(the winpatrol warning i mean)

Everything went well on the Win10 installation, but the only problem is that when I go to access the settings tab in the start menu, it just flashes briefly like it tries to open the settings window, and then disappears, so I can't access anything in the settings. No update checking, just nothing. Everything else seems to work... I can also access the system info window and it shows Windows 10 to be activated.

Edit: I can get to the control panel, and I can see Windows Update, but I get this error message when I try to click on it:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

I Googled the message and there are many reasons for that error, and many solutions - but none specific to my issue (that I can find).

I think I've created a similar mess. A CNET email prompted to check today and discovered that I've not installed any updates since mid-December 2015. I found I had Windows Update set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." Windows Update never told me it found updates nor asked if I wanted to download and install any. This seems a totally useless setting. Is it supposed to work differently?

I reset the setting to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them." Then I ran Windows Update. It ran for a long time...

Now I appear to have a list of 43 files in Windows>SoftwareDistribution>Download that are ready to be installed; it is a random mix of critical and recommended updates. Belarc lists 30 "Microsoft security bulletins. Of course the file-names are uninformative letters and numbers Do I need to be concerned about a stealth Windows 10 install being among them?

I also see my settings currently include "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" and "Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows."

Should I turn one or both of these off before I reboot?

I'm confused about how to deal with these latter two categories. I'd like to be able to 'pick and choose' and perhaps even make notes and research some of them and then come back again and install some of them.

Thank yo... Read more

A:Windows update settings and other questions

I persisted and finally reached a 'Select Updates to Install.' There were 48 'important updates' and 2 'optional' updates. Curiously one of the 'optional updates' came 'preselected' and I needed to uncheck it. It was the option to install Windows 10!

I'd still like to understand why Windows Update did not tell me there were critical security updates I needed to download and install. The application was set to "Check for updates...."

I am still confused why I needed to run "Check for Updates" twice in Windows Update before I reached the "Select Updates..." screen.

Okay, so it's been awhile since I needed to ask a question on here. But, here it is:

I recently finished my time at university. This means I've been able to move back to an ISP that doesn't have the kind of draconian security that we had at school.

At university, they set group policy to require everyone to have Windows Update on "Install Updates Automatically." This, however, is not the most convenient setting for me. Unfortunately, I've been unable to change it. Any ideas on how I can change my group policy to allow myself this setting?

A:Changing Windows Update Settings

Have you removed your computer from the domain they had at the university? Once the machine is removed from the domain the GP should not apply to your PC any longer.

Unable to run Windows Update on this Windows 8.1 desktop.   I'm being prompted that ‘some settings are managed by system administrator’ and if I attempt to change the settings, the option is greyed out.   Currently states in grey 'Never check for updates'.

I'm the administrator with administrator rights.   Windows update was working, but just noticed yesterday this issue.

Thanking you in advance.

Hey everyone. It seems like every time I restart my computer or turn it on after its been off the Action Center has an alert and it tells me that I need to change my Windows Update setting back to the recommended one which is where it automatically downloads and installs updates. I need some help with making the Windows Update setting stay where I put it which is the automatically downloads and install updates. Thanks in advance.

A:My Windows Update Settings Keep Changing

Open action center, in the upper left corner click on ( Change Action User Settings) under Security Messages uncheck Windows update . You at least need to have Windows Update set to notify you when updates are available for down load .

A very simple question please.

Considering the changes for WU coming shortly, and I assume the three categories of updates (important, recommended, optional) no longer exist or apply, and that we either install the Update rollup they send or not, should the Settings be adjusted to "Install updates automatically"?  Currently, I have "check for updates but let me choose.....".  Will any of the Settings make a difference or will the October Update just get downloaded and installed regardless of Settings - unless of course WU was turned off.

I don't intend to turn WU off, but my HP laptop has gotten cranky in its old age, and I haven't had the ability to "restore to an earlier time" and some other defects for many months (and do not want to attempt repair of System Restore again right now).  Would it be best to wait and see how the October rollup affects other older laptops or just install what MS sends because it includes the security update?

I currently have 23 optional updates waiting to be downloaded and installed.  I'd prefer not to do that.

Thanks for some guidelines.

A:Windows Update settings for October

If you have check for updates but let me choose when to install them you will still get a notification of the rollup package and you will have the option to install or not. If you avoided any important updates in the past those updates will be installed in the next rollup. Microsoft will be offering monthly security only rollups via the Windows Update Catalog site which can only be accessed via IE. These will still be rollups so you will have to update all the monthly security updates or none.

Hello all,
My first post here. I did not see this problem while searching the forums so I hope it hasn't already been addressed. I'm running XP Home and Mozilla. I recently changed my Auto Update settings to notify me before downloading
updates, but now I find WU is downloading updates as I type this. I'm not sure if this if SP2 or not but it does seem to be a sizeable download. I'm on dial-up so it will be awhile before I know what the update is. Also, I'm using ZA 5.1 and do not allow IE access to the internet. Anyone know why update would start without notifying me first?
