Dell E521 GFX card update

Q: Dell E521 GFX card update

I just purchased the XFX 8600 GT that many have said fits and works in the Dell E521 (numerous help threads allover google).

The problem I'm having is that, despite uninstalling drivers and everything, I throw the 8600 into the computer and start the computer up.

This is where it gets hairy.

The cards fan spins fast 4 times, and then slows down to a normal speed. During this whole time, nothing is displayed on the computer (no bios/windows xp loading screen/nothing) and I can't tell if it is even detected.

I've tried all the dvi ports too, nothing.

There's question in which the 305 w power supply can handle it and many have said so.
Is the card faulty?

The card I take out it the 7300 LE. There's no onboard graphics either.

A: Dell E521 GFX card update

Either the graphics card is defective or the power supply can't handle it after all. It's not easy to say at this point. If it was me, I would try the new card in another system or try a better power supply in your current system. Of course, I don't know if you have access to alternatives but I don't know how you can be sure otherwise.

Hi,

I posted a similiar question just under a year ago and I bought a HD4670 with IceQ not realising that it wouldn't fit. That obviously meant that my PC could only hold a single slot graphics card.

My PC Stats:

Dell Dimension E521,
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual,
Core Processor 5000+,
2.61Ghz, 2Gb RAM,
Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE

*I also have a bigger PSU thats not attached: 'Dell Silencer 500W-600W, not sure which'. (Bought it to power the HD4670 but as the card didn't fit I returned the card but the other shop wouldn't take the PSU back.)

Could you guys help me with ideas of good graphics cards I could fit into my system? Take in mind I have a 600W PSU and a HD Monitor.

Thanks in advance

That is a realy weird layout for a computer case. Does it fit standard PCI-E cards or do they have to be the half height cards?

Hi,
I have a older Dell E 521 tower that is running fine on XP (originally came w/ Vista) Now that I have heard that XP may finally be on the way out would I be able to update to Windows 7? The tower is basically stock with the added ram I installed last year. The HD is I think 75gb so I might also update to 150.

Got a 521 with the horrible 56MB onboard GPU. Had it for over a year now, works great, pathetic graphics. Have 2 256MB GeForce7600GS's that I pulled, working, from my main gaming rig. These GS's work fine, so I decided to use one of em in this 521. I did the usual: uninstall the drivers for the current graphics hardware (the onboard crap) then powered down and installed the 7600GS. Upon restart I got fan activity on the 7600GS so I know the PCIe slot has juice, but the video output is null. I swapped the monitor cable back to the onboard connector and it popped on. Few seconds later it auto-detected 'new hardware' and REINSTALLED that pathetic onboard driver set. So I thought 'okay you little frakker, I'll disable you instead' so I did that and restarted. Reinstalled my 7-series drivers, THEN 'removed' the onboard stuff again and restarted. Same thing, no video output on the 7600, but again, the crap onboard output fired right up at low-res, then autodetected itself again. I went back to Device Drivers and whaddayaknow, the onboard drivers were re-installed AGAIN. I went to the BIOS and swapped the video switch to AUTO (which it specifies you need to use with 'installed hardware' vs. the onboard stuff). Noted that the PCI box in the BIOS had 4 slots to monitor, and it didn't see anything in any slot, which stinks because one of those 'empty' PCI slots has my 7600GS shoved into it. Anyway, I restarted again ... Read more

I replaced the hard drive in my Dell Dimension E521, with a new 320GB (non Dell Specific) WD unit, and loaded Windows 7 Pro (again, non Dell specific version). The old hard drive was bad.

I downloaded the 1.1.11 BIOS update (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDeta...) to a bootable USB flash drive. When I boot the computer off of the flash drive, it comes up with the C: thing and does nothing else.

Am I supposed to type something in there, to get it to update the BIOS or access the file on the flash drive?

I'm kind of new to this stuff, but learning...

I want to update the BIOS, to be able to install the AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6000+ processor. The current version is 1.1.6.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Hello I tried to install a power supply with my dell now I get a steady amber light after I removed the power supply since it had showed me an amber light. With the old power supply, I still get the steady amber light. I noticed that on the LED in the back, I got a yellowish amber colored light as well. With the new power supply it didn't have the exact four pin layout of my old one but had an eight pin layout that was seperated so that I could ease a four pin in with my computer. Did this blow out the motherboard? The major thing I did was remove the heatsink which had pins connected to it when I tried to install this video card but I noticed that some of the pins bent out of shape so I got a new heatsink only this time the heatsink I recieved has no pins. I installed the heatsink and tried to boot the pc but it won't boot only the fan spins and none of the indicator lights in the front turn on. Is the motherboard or processor dead? Thanks.

Hello everyone, I really hope you are all able to help me. I'm kind of a newb when it comes to the tech aspect of computers, atleast when it comes to finding problems. I'm writing because I've been trying to upgrade my computer to play Warhammer Online. I had a stock Dell e521 until about a year ago when I added 2 gigs of ram and a GT8600 XxX to play TF2 and WoW. Everything ran fine. About a month ago I got into the Warhammer beta, when I was alone I would get around 20-30 FPS but when I was in a town or around 5-10 people my fps would drop to 1-5 instantly. Me bring the person I am instantly thought video card upgrade. I knew if I to upgrade I needed a new PSU. Last week I purchased a Asus 4850 and a Basiq BP500U (500W) PSU. I installed both of them and everything was fine. Loaded up Warhammer and while I cant say there was no improvement, it wasnt what I was expecting. Instead of 1-5 fps I have 5-10 in crunch times, and it still gets very choppy when new items pop up on screen (Not to mention my Max FPS might of improved 5 FPS only). So I did some research and did a complete reformat of my harddrive, didnt help. I'm running with 26 processes (including all the ATI ones). And I'm left wondering what is slowing me down to such a crawl. The only thing I can think of are either my Processor or my Mother Board... both of which I have no experience with. PSU and Video Card

outlawarrior781:

I?m at Dell Headquarters in Austin, Texas and I just came across this post. An ATX power supply will most likely not fit in that system because of where the screw holes are and we don't sell an upgraded one for the E521. That would leave you with the 305 watt one that comes stock and whatever video card options can work with that. Feel free to post back if you have any other questions.

First off the stock PSU in this dell is a 305W.
I want to upgrade my PSU no matter what. BUT the dell rep didnt tell me anything tha twas compatible. Cause he wanted me to buy from dell :-\

I hear from others that it is a Standard BTX PSU. But i fear something burning out if i get a new one.

1st concern... Will most power supplies fit?
2nd... Will it burn my mobo out with too much wattage
3rd... People say Dell PSUs are not universal.

Please give me your input
I have seen Compiler post some about E521s but not sure on results

I do regret buying this system heh.

A:can not reinstall vista on dell e521

Hi meekle,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

If you can't restore to factory conditions either normal way, we need to see if we can either fix the computer or get it to the point where you can restore.

You can make a bootable Recovery Environment Recovery Disk using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer like the one you used to post here).

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Use the recovery disk if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.

If the System Restore doesn't work, do a Startup Repair by booting to the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk (or one you can borrow from ANYONE) or from a Recovery Disk with recovery options included on it. Here's the procedu... Read more

I was just on the Dell website configuring systems for cost comparisons. I started with an E521 then tried a Dimension 1100, which was listed with a base price $100 less than the E521.

The answer is yes, the keyboard is brand new. when I went Dell forum site, it seems the only fix is to replace the motherboard. I tried flash the bios, that did not work. It seems that it is a bug in bios or motherboard, and if the computer out of warrenty, then you are out luck.

Hello all. I've got a dell dimension E521 desktop with a bad USB controller it seems. The unit halts at bootup reporting a bad keyboard, bad cable and invalid system configuration. It tells me I can press F2 to continue, but the keyboard input does not work.

The USB ports are shot, so no matter what, I cannot press F2 to make the unit boot. Dell kindly has not included PS2 ports, so the system just halts at the bios screen. I was wondering if this could be motherboard related, or is this the IO controller in the front?

Where are the USB controllers located on these machines? Should I go out and order a new board, or get an IO controller?

A:Dell Dimension E521 No USB/bad cable

How do you know for sure it isn't a bad keyboard? If you haven't already, try the front USB ports and try a different keyboard or try your USB keyboard on another PC.

The USB controllers are on the motherboard. Exactly where I don't know. You'd have to look but the only thing you could probably do is check the fit of the connection of the front USB ports. The USB ports on the back would be connected to integrated controllers so there's nothing you can do with them.

I have 2 questions.

1.) I want to upgrade the PSU in my Dell Dimension E521 from the measly 305W to something like 500-600W. Is this even possible with my PC? If so, which PSU would be best?

2.) I also plan on buying a GeForce 9600GT if I can get a new PSU. Would this card fit in my PC?

Yes you can - just decide what company you prefer then the size of the psu (dual rail 12v or whatever) and then go to their site and ask them what the dimensions are - look at the picture and verify it is accurate so that the power plug hole etc fits.

Okay, so my friend's computer was on the fritz and I had to re-install Vista for her. The thing is, Office 2007 came with it but I can't find any discs. It can't be a trial version because she's had it for years. I'm guessing she lost the OEM disc. Either that or she never got one in the first place. I have the service number and the product key for the comp. Is there a means to get a replacement disc. Would Dell give her a replacement disc if I were to call?

I have a Dell E521 desktop, which I've had for nine years and one day I suddenly discovered the front power button was flashing an amber light and then over time the power gradually died completely. I then looked online to confirm it was the power supply at fault and so went on ebay and bought a new power supply the exact same as the original.
The problem I have now is that everything powers up fine with a front green power light, but it is now showing green diagnostic lights on the front panel which are clearly 2 & 4. I've looked in the manual and it says, 'a possible graphic-card failure has occurred'. I've tried taking my Radeon HD6450 graphic card out and reinstalled it and I've also tried booting with just the integrated graphics on the motherboard, but the lights remain stuck at 2 & 4 and the computer will not boot up properly. Only the Dell logo screen appears on my monitor and the bar underneath that fills white as it boots is only three quarters of the way white. It's really frustrating to be greeted with yet another problem which I don't think is the graphic card, because how can both go down at the same time?
On the motherboard there is an LED that's showing an amber/orange light, it used to always be green, so what does this orange light mean? Can anyone please help me diagnose what the problem could be and a possible fix. I really like my Dell E521 and really would like to get it up and running again. Hope you can help.... Read more

Try clearing BIOS to clear that error:

Power off, unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open case and remove motherboard battery
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Make sure RAM modules, video card and other PCI cards are correctly seated in their slots
Reinstall the battery - use a fresh one since the old one may be weak/dead. CR2032 3-volt lithium ion battery

it is a secondary computer in our house, used by the kids. Its starting to show its age a bit, though, and I'd like to see what I can do to allow it to run older games without spending more than $200 and without upgrading the power supply (if I can avoid it).

Looks like I missed my window of opportunity a bit on the CPU and video card, though. In both cases, the recommended upgrade choices for this model no longer seem to be available, though I can get a valid CPU upgrade option from Buy.com for about $80 (looks to be retail, including fan). But, I'm not sure on the video card, and not sure about the memory. So, any advice would be welcome.

thanks!

A:Dell Dimension e521 upgrade options?

If it's over 5 years old I would forget trying to upgrade it.
Standards and component fitting-types have changed since then, so much of what you would need to fit the existing motherboard is no longer being manufactured or stocked, warehouses have been cleared to make room for the new generation of upgrade components which won't fit a 5-year old motherboard.

Having a new motherboard fitted into to the existing case, then having new components fitted to that, whilst physically possible does not economic sense. The cost would be something approaching that of a new PC unless you bought the necessary parts and did all the work yourself. The bottom line is that a new PC would make much more sense.

Everytime I restart my computer, it stalls on bootup and I have to hold down the reset button until it powers off and then repowers on again.

It always stalls "half-way" on the bootup screen.

It just says Dell Dimension and it has this status bar that only goes halfway....

it has bios ver 1.1.4

But if i reboot again it will work...

any ideas?

Could be a memory error or something faulty with your PSU.

Try uninstalling your memory and reinstalling it then try again.

Hi there, my friends Vista desktop has got the dreaded BSOD error and it will not boot.
Stop: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x8796A350, 0x8796A49C, 0x82860710)

I believe this is a hardware issue. I have tried running in safe mode, I have ran the startp repair and it says it can't fix this error, I then tried to do a System restore from the repair menu and it still gave the bsod, I tried chkdsk/r in command prompt and it can't get that far on boot.
I have removed all the RAM sticks and checked them and it apears they are not faulty.
I removed the cmos battery and then replaced it and it said voltage was low, could this be the problem?

I have also inserted a Vista dvd to try and boot the recovery console but as its loading up, about 3/4 of the way through it stops and gives error 0xc00000e9.
I can only guess this must be a hardware error.
i think he turned the PC off during a Windows update so could ahve messed it up.
Could the PSU be at falt, the wire makes 'crackling' noises when moved so maybe it has shorted in the past.

THanks for the help

Ben

Hi,

Have 2 identical Dell Dimension desktops E521 series. 17" flat screen monitors with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE graphics card. Both run windows XP SP3. One in dtrs room, one in son's room.

Dtr called me, reports not being able to "type" on her screen. (was not there when this happened). tried a re-boot. Then monitor was just a black screen.

Came home, turned computer on, monitor light turns green for a second, then stays amber. When I try to toggle input mode (should be VGI) get error message that says "digital input in power save mode press computer button or any key on keyboard or move mouse". Pressing any button or moving mouse does nothing.

If I turn the surge protector off, i will briefly get the blue Dell logo. But a regular turn on off the computer gets me nothing at all on the screen.

Tried swapping out with son's monitor. His monitor is blank (black screen) amber power light, on her computer. Her monitor works fine on his computer.
Searching this message board and Dell support site (which sucks by the way), leads me to believe it might be a graphics card problem (?).

Of course, both computers are out of warranty.

I'm not afraid to open the case to switch out new cards if necessary. (have done this type of work on previous computers).

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi everyone,

I recently installed Windows 7 in a partition of my hard drive along with XP. No problems at all with that but...

I recently purchased a DVB USB Dual Tuner Stick to work with Windows Media Centre. Been having problems with it from the dot but I think that is mainly down to the signal from the aerial.

What's happened though is I left it plugged in when I restarted my PC and now the BIOS takes for ever to get to the Windows loading screen and I can't even get into the BIOS for the reasons explained below.

I have a Dell Dimension E521 which has no PS2 port, yes no PS2 port! So I can't plug one of them in. So at the initial screen I can't press F2 to enter system setup to make sure 'Enable USB Legacy Devices' is checked. I've downloaded the latest BOIS flash form the Dell website which is the same version as the current one and applied that. When I switch on the PC my KB's lights doesn't come on straight away either like there is no power going to them. Also when Windows 7 is inactive for a while is goes into the locked mode and the KB and mouse won't work then. It's obviously a USB failure/problem?

I've seen people talking about taking the battery out of the Motherboard and clearing the CMOS, is that not risky and I could lose all my information or end up having a defunct Motherboard? How do I do that?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I'm so annoyed!

A:USB Keyboard not working during boot - Dell Dimension E521

I was looking at a friends Dell Dimension e521 yesterday and it's associated problems.

Virii infections/spyware bad javascripts etc.

After a few attempts to run spyware and AV proggies, and have them halt with bogus errors, I decided to boot into safe mode.

OK rebooted pressed F8 and when the safe mode choices appeared the Ketboard and mouse were NFG in selecting any of the choices.

The only option was to wait for the timer to count down and "Start windows normally"!

Just what is it that freezes the keyboard till the LOGON screen?

Oh and there's no F2 or F12 execution at post to get into cmos/bios setup either. (KB is frozen here too).

There are no ps2 KB/Mouse ports on this machine only the USB port where the combo KB~Mouse single usb plug is inserted!

I did eventually get other, AV and Spyware proggie's on to the machine (Eset and Malwarebytes to replace McAffee) and they did find 3 virii and 46 pieces of spyware, one of which was the AV2009 crap, Which slipped right by McAffee!

Even after removing the above, the KB/Mouse stays frozen till "Logon"!

I thought possibly the virii and/or spyware had somehow been the culprit!

Just what is it that is disabling the KB/Mouse until "Logon"? Has anyone else had this problem with the e521?

Hi there,
I was thinking of upgrading my processor because I believe it is bottle necking my gaming performance. My current computer is composed of an AMD Athlon X2 4200+, 2.2GHz, Nvidia 9600GT 512MB video card, 2 Gigs Dell Ram, 250GB HD, Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 650W ATX12V Power Supply with Three 12V Rails. I was thinking of upgrading to a 5400+ or even a 6000+, but I'm not sure if it's compatible with my motherboard or w/e. If anyone could help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Here is the info from CPU-Z in .htm format.

A:Upgrading my processor (Dell E521, AMD Athlon x2 4200+, 2.2Ghz)

If the dell BIOS allows it, the 5400 would be safest to upgrade to. 6000 and higher and you'll risk blowing up the board. The difference is 2.8 vs 3.0ghz.

I don't think a 600Mhz upgrade will help much. But here is a chart with Quake4: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/...,1254,1226,1280,1316,1313,1312,1284,1310,1309

Going from 81fps to 95fps. Dell RAM is usually 533 or 667Mhz RAM, if its 533, going to 800Mhz would help a bit. A 9600GT is a fine card... going to a $160 ATI 4850 card would be a bit of a boost, that is faster than the old $600 8800GTX.

hi tech guy forums,

I have a standard Dell Dimension 3000 pc at home that i regularly use for gaming. At the moment I have a Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 graphics card installed to help with gaming. I am interested in purchasing a new graphics card and was wondering if, in particular if a Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card will fit and comply with my computer. I am also upgrading my RAM form 512MB to 2GB if this helps in any way. If you have any other recommended graphics cards that may work with my pc please let me know.

Thanks

A:Dell Dimension 3000 graphics card update

Your Dimension 3000 only has PCI slots for a graphics card, correct?

(according to dell, and my own experience, likely yes)

Without a PCI-Express or AGP card slot, gaming can not improve very much.

I also have a Dimension 3000 : P4 2.8 GHz - 768mb RAM, with a Geforce 6200 [256mb ddr2] PCI card. When it comes to gaming, it is outperformed by my old 1.4 GHz Athlon XP - 512 RAM - Geforce Ti-4200 [64mb], simply because the older computer has an AGP video slot ... the PCI bus is a VERY limiting factor.

Hello everyone I have a very pressing problem. I had Vista running on my Inspiron 1520 Laptop. I recently upgraded to Windows 7, ever since then I have had terrible trouble with my Wireless Card. The driver for the card often comes up as not being able to start I often get Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card can not start Code 10. I have read that this was a problem when reinstalling a OS or installing a new one with this card. I believe I may need a driver for the chip set or something similar. I also understand that I may have to swap back to Vista though I really do hope I don't. I do believe that a recent update from Dell has made this problem chronic as I did not have this problem when I immediately got the laptop back.

I really am hoping that I can get some help here as Dell is not bothered to help as I am out of warranty and they don't seem to care about this older model laptop.

Thanks again for all your help

In the boot sequence the SD Card reader is third -- after the SSD and the CD/DVD.  It is third in BIOS and third after pressing F12 during POST.  With a card in the SD Card Reader boot fails with what I call a green screen.  When I ran the repair CD with the SD card in the slot, the message was that the boot sector was corrupt.  Why is BIOS trying to read the SD Card instead of the SSD?  The SD card is SanDisk Ultra II SD 4 15 MB/s 2GB.  Please let me know when a new version of BIOS is available.

A:E521 will not boot without disc

The problem is likely the Boot Sequence. Likely its set to boot from a floppy drive, CD/DVD drive or something silly before the internal hard drive.
Power up your Dell and press [F2] to access the BIOS setup, go to Boot Order and move internal HDD to the top. Then retry.
Note Windows Vista is effectively obsolete now and no version of Internet Explorer on it is supported now making it insecure. Google drop Chrome support for the OS in April.
I advise taking the unofficial Windows 10130 Upgrade path to Windows 10 Pro:

Hey all, I'm a new member looking for help. After pressing the power button of the E521 the fans start running and the #2 diagnostic light comes on. I get nothing from my the keyboard, mouse or monitor which I know is good as well as the VGA cable connecting to the CPU's intergrated motherboard. Prior to getting to this point the system had a blinking "amber" power light but after re-seating the CDROM and Hard drive cables it went away. I've re-seated the memory, checked all other connections without success. I don't hear the sound of the system booting nor feel the hard drive working. OS is XP with an AMD 64 Anthlon X2, and of course the warranty is out. I'm thinking Power Supply but not sure after looking over the Dell Diagnostic Lights chart in the User's Manual. There are no peripherals connected and it is plugged directly into a wall socket. I thank the community in advance for any assistance I get.

A:Dimension E521 #2 Diagnostic Light

The diagnostic lights won't be much help, the Post is failing before the diagnostic routine can finish.

It is hardware related, it could be Any piece of hardware connected to the motherboard that is preventing the Post process.

1. CD rom
2. Hard drive
3. Memory modules
4. Power supply
5. Add in cards (PCI, AGP ect.)
6. Card Reader
7. Processor
8. Motherboard itself

you would need to start disconnecting hardware one at a time until you get a post screen or error screen, a process of elimination.

Hello all.

I've been looking to upgrade the hard drive on my E521. I've narrowed my search to a few options that I am able to afford and which I think look like good drives. I plan to do a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. I use my computer for graphic design work using software like Adobe CS5 and such, and also basic video editing, (I also have a new nVidia 9400GT video card that's working like a charm). I also play mid-level games, nothing too hardcore.

My current hard drive is about 372gb. I'm not sure of the cache size or the rpm.
I was looking a Western Digital drives, particularly the Caviar Black series. I searched a few and chose a couple Black and a Blue that I'm interested in.

My question is: Is there a recommended size for a boot/system drive? In other words, is it recommended to have a main drive be 1TB, or is that too 'unstable' as a boot drive? I read somewhere that a 640gb drive is more stable as a system drive, so that sparked my curiosity as to know what I should really get.

The drives I'm looking at are:

From these, which one fits best for my system? Also, does it really matter if the main boot drive is as large as 1tb? Should I get a Black instead of the Blue?

It depends on what your storage needs are as to what size drive you get. With WD I don't know if one size is more stable than another. For what it's worth I happen to use the 640GB Caviar Black hard drive on some of my PCs.

You can partition your large hard drive into a smaller operating system partition and the rest as storage. Perhaps a 60GB OS partition would be more than enough but others might have other opinions.

To simplify the installation of the large hard drives, I would recommend installing XP SP2 or SP3 or you could consider Windows 7.

Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension E521, it started a few days ago when it was running smooth, one day I turned it off. When I tried to turn it on a day later it wouldn't display an image on the monitor.

The computer power ups fine, the fans are blowing strong like usual on start up but do not stop blowing hard. Its like it gets stuck at the start up stage.

The power button flashes orange, while all components work in the computer, I have took out unnecessary parts such as CD ROMS etc.

I have checked all fans and every thing seems to be ok, but it wont display any image. (the monitor will not come out of standby)

Before I used to take out a random part and some how it would work after I plug it out and in again (switching power by mains off worked first, then taking the Ethernet cable out worked, then taking the ram out worked). This is quite random and I cannot think what it could be. I have taken everything out and pluged it all back in again, double checking all cables are correct and all devices are working correctly.

Please help me.

Dimension E521 is the model of my Dell Computer.

I hope someone can help before I consider exotic dancing or street pharmaceuticals as a career....

I'm a computer tech - at it now for 17 years. Sadly, I work with a lot of "legacy" systems, which hasn't prepared me for this problem.

I have with me tonight a Dell Dimension E521 installed with XP Media Center. I'm trying to do a "soft install" of the OS, as the entire "Media center" portion is hosed.

The problem is: This thing has no PS2 ports, and a USB keyboard ceases to function as soon as I tell it to boot from the CD. It boots the CD, but I can't tell it to install the OS because the keyboard is useless.

I promised the unit back at 9AM tomorrow. Any ideas?

Thanks for any help!

Hiya guys. I recently acquired a Dell Dimension E521. I installed a WD? I believe 160GB SATA HDD. My issue is that I had to replace the CMOS battery cause it wouldnt save any info and kept saying it was "low". Anyhow I replaced it with success and the BIOS is saving info however. Both before and after the new battery if you let the tower boot up by itself it will go to a "No Boot Device" found screen or be preceded by a "drive 0 seek failure" then that "No Bot Device found" scrren will appear. BUT If I hit F12 to bring boot menu up then select onboard HD then My WD it will boot just fine. ANy ideas on what the heck is going on or why its doing that? Thanks in advance guys. BTW I have just updated the BIOS today because I have a dual core coming to upgrade it on Monday. It ahs a 3400+ Sempron which is really slow for Vista Basic 32bit

I would like to ask for input on a subject that has certainly been well discussed on these forums, but I have yet to find a solution which I can make work.
The question is how to make “Stereo Mix” work on my now very dated (2007) but extremely useful Dell Dimension E521 Desktop, which I use as a general purpose server, especially for music.  It has MS Vista(32) and “SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio” chips.  (You have to give credit to Dell for great reliability!)
I see all the controversy, but remarkably Dell released a new driver R171789 on 20 Nov 2013, for apparently the single purpose of providing Stereo Mix.  Great, but the compatibility statement says Windows XP and 2000, and the installer refuses to install under MS Vista.  That’s a little frustrating, to say the least: if Dell is going to provide Stereo Mix, why not do it over all the systems prior to 2013?
Some posts suggest running the “setup.exe” file in XP compatibility mode, but the installer still refuses in the same way.
MS Vista has a compatibility mode for XP drivers, so I am wondering if it is possible to do something like install the XP drivers manually, so as to achieve the desired result.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi Yall,
So I have successfully (I think) installed my new Radeon R7 250 "low profile" graphics card on my Dell Optiplex 9020.  I plugged it in the motherboard, started up the computer then went to Device Manager to update the drivers--which I did.  Side note: Ever since plugging the graphics card into the motherboard, some tasks like starting programs or starting windows take 2-10X as long as they used to.  Anyhow, it then asked for a restart, which I did.  The computer still took extra long to start any program, and when I plugged the monitor into the graphics card all I got was a black screen.
Take two:  I then read that I should have uninstalled my current graphics driver (Intel integrated HD graphics) before I installed my new graphics card, but failing this, I could uninstall my old graphics card and change the default graphics card in the bios.  I uninstalled the old card and went to the bios, but could not change the default...can't remember exactly what it called it, graphics controller or something.  I could see that intel HD graphics was still the default (this is after uninstalling intel HD graphics and then restarting) but could find no way to change this.  Supposedly dell will make the switcheroo on its own...but it doesn't seem to have.
Take three:  Next I physically removed the graphics card, restarted the computer, then physically inserted the graphics card again, then started the comp... Read more

Hi,

This problem has been discussed a lot, but I haven't seen any conclusive answer on how to fix my current problem. Please read -- you're help is greatly appreciated:

My friend bought an upgraded copy of XP and decided to upgrade his version of XP to a valid, registered copy (XP SP2). Upgrading anything is a nightmare -- he should have never done this. He has an ATI 9600SE Video card and uses 2 monitors. Ever since upgrading, the ATI driver is no where to be found, AND in Device Manager, there is NO node for "Display Adapter" -- it simply doesn't exist. After deleting every trace of any ATI video drivers on his system, I downloaded the latest version of the ATI catalyst software and tried reinstalling, but everytime I do this, I get the following error in the middle of installation:

Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup.

When I go to Display Property / Settings, there is no mention of a display adapter there -- (I couldn't use 2 monitors if I wanted, because there is no option to do so). When I go to advanced, the adapter is the "VGASafe" windows adapter. So, I think that the standard VGA adapter is ALREADY installed (it is DEFINITELY VGA resolution, so it has to be using a driver, and it must be using THIS driver, which I believe is windows' "standard VGA driver", is this correct?) One of my thoughts, was ... Read more

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 5759.
May I ask if it's possible to view a list of what has been installed by Dell Update?
If I type 'Dell Update' in to Windows 10 search bar, I am informed that this is a desktop application.

But selecting this does not open an application, instead a desktop message appears "Dell update: Get the latest updates from Dell".
The application "Dell SupportAssist" is nice but I don't see an option to see which Dell updates have been installed. Is this possible? I'd really like to see what has downloaded to my computer.
Thanks in advance for any info.

A:Dell Update

I have just updated "Dell SupportAssist" and it does appear to show more details about updates.
I'm still not sure that it's possible to see a clear list of what Dell Update alone has installed.

hi guys im looking at a geforce gtx450 or 460 for my dell 545s slimline, will it fit, or any other suggestions on cases, and what psu ill need any info would be great

A:graphics card for dell

The Inspiron 545s only takes low-profile cards. I believe that neither the 450 or 460 are available in low profile. (At www.newegg.com I see a low-profile 430, which probably isn't a fast card, but it is a Fermi series product.)

It also has a 250W PSU, which is lower than recommended for most add-in cards.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that a standard ATX power will fit in the case.

If you wish to move the motherboard to a standard case, be aware that the connector for the front panel stuff (power switch, power LED, drive LED, etc.) is a Dell proprietary design. That may not make it impossible, but it'd be more work than with an industry standard motherboard.

My advice: treat the PC an an appliance, as Dell intended. If you want a PC that uses industry standard components, build one. (It's what I've done since 1997.)

Hi denwilliam,

Intel Wireless N 2230 supports b/g/n at 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz as well. It should be able to connect to the printer as well which works on G mode.

If it is a Dell Printer once it is connect to the Network(Router) all the devices connected to the router should be able to access the printer.

Please check the specifications of the printer at the below link:

Hope it helps.

That's going to be cutting it pretty close. There is a chance you may be OK, as that PSU has decent power on the 12v rails, but you are a little low in the watts. I see you also have a sound card installed... it's going to depend on how much other hardware you have in there.

You can get a ballpark number here:

You should have a servcie tag on the back of the monitor

It will show in device manager, I don't know if yours is a teac model but it will look like the pic below

I believe to use it the monitor has a usb connection to hook to your computer, which will probably load the drivers automatically. Found a pic for you, it uses a Black USB 2.0 A/B cable

About six months ago, I upgraded the hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 2200 from the original 25 GB to a Western Digital 120 GB. Two weeks ago, the drive failed and I returned the drive to Western Digital for replacement. Today I received the replacement drive and Western Digital has sent me a 250 GB drive. My problem is that the original BIOS (1.10 A03) supports a maximum drive size of 120 GB. I've checked Dell's website and as far as I can determine, none of the BIOS updates address a larger hard drive. Can anyone verify that I am correct about this?
