windows security update error 1058

Q: windows security update error 1058

1st off i accidentally downloaded a virus which changed my WIN32.dll
i would get popups going into internet explorer but would be fine using mozilla firefox

after knowing i had the virus i tried using antivirus software such as housecall but were all useless to me. after restarting the comp as housecall had told me to, my start menu and icons were gone, all that was there was the background
i pressed ctrl alt del and the comp was running fine, i used "New Task..." to open my programs, i ran windows explorer and everything came back, i then looked on these forums and found the same problem, see below

http://forums.techguy.org/malware-r...0xc0000005-application-failed-initialize.html

i followed the instructions and my comp is back to normal apart from windows security update doesnt work,
a little red sheild with an X comes up in my tabs
security updates are turned off. i click turn on and comes up with a message saying

Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. Click to expand...

i have gone into services.exe then automatic updates, noticed it was on disabled, i changed it to automatically and clicked start and it says

could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.Click to expand...

the path to executable is C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

My be more to it then just setting it to automatic. According to Microsoft, you also have to change the hardware profile in the login tab.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps to enable the Automatic Updates service:
Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
In the right pane, double-click Automatic Updates.
Click the Log On tab.
In the You can enable or disable this service for the hardware profiles listed below box, click the current hardware profile, and then click Enable.
Click Apply, and then click the General tab.
Click Start, and then click OK.Click to expand...

Hey all. First time here but having a problem with my XP SP2.

Security center is disabled and when I try to enable it I get an error...

"Could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer
Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated w/ it."

Occasionally I'll get this "Generic Process for win32" error crashing on svchost.exe which seems to turn off a bunch of processes including windows audio, windows management, windows time, etc. I can re-enable the audio and it works fine. Systems runs fine otherwise.

Also, I can't re-enable Windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing...Both, security and this, go to the path of
svchost.exe -knetsvcs. It gives me the same error as above.

Any suggestions?

Also, recently formatted and installed/added a new HD

When you post a HJT log you should not make any changes to the computer unless instructed to do so by the HJT team member. Once you are declared virus-free if there are any problems then they can be addressed Good luck

Windows Automatic update will not start. Do anyone has any other ideas?

A:The Automatic Update is not started. Error 1058

Hello DJSweeting, Welcome to TSF!

I suggest you try this workaround for Windows Update issues...

How to Repair the Windows Update Files.

1. Go Start > Run.
2. In the box type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL > Enter.
3. A message saying, "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" will appear > OK.
4. Now it is necessary to repeat these steps for each of the following files commands:
Hit Enter after each line

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Once finished; since the temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted, please carry out the following steps to rename the folder:

1. Go Start > Run > in the box type cmd > Enter.

Type the following command in the open panel.

net stop WuAuServ

(Please Note: the computer may need to be rebooted before the net stop command will work.)

2. Go Start > Run > type in the box %windir% > Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder ( by Right clicking) SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Go Start > Run > type in cmd > Enter. In the open command pane, please type:

net start WuAuServ

Once that?s done, Go Start > All Programs > Windows Updates and see if it will allow the downloading/installation of Windows Updates.

Post back with the results.

Kind Regards,

A couple months ago I restored my computer to its factory settings due to an unresolved issue which I believe had been a virus in its memory. Since then my antivirus program was Norton Antivirus 2005. I was unsure as to why I could not have the most updated Norton, which I had before the reboot, but had planned on looking into that over christmas break.

A few days ago I was on Surfthechannel and Facebook when I became infected with what I believe is the Trojan.Vundo. Random pop ups would come up and I would be unable to enable my Windows Automatic Update. I ran Norton which found and removed some problems. I then ran Avast which found some other issues and supposedly dealt with them. While pop ups would not come up anymore, any time I used the internet the window would change colors (the way it does when another window is opening, please ask if I didn't explain that enough) though it would not minimize and I still wasn't able to enable the updates. I then downloaded Windows LiveOne Care which scanned my computer and told me I had Vundo. After this I uninstalled the other two antiviruses and installed the LiveOne Care trial which told me that it had removed Vundo. But now it keeps alerting me to the fact that the Windows updates is disabled but I still can not enable it.

I have tried the workaround involving the running of REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL and so forth. That worked up to when I restarted the computer and tried typing net stop WuAuServ in the command window. It just gav... Read more

A while ago, my PC was having some lag issues that made the computer practically unusable. I found out in msconfig that I had almost all services running. I disabled many of the services, and I made sure not disable the necessary ones (i.e, Windows Audio.) I restarted my computer and there was a red circle with a white "X" over the audio icon. I clicked on the icon. A window named "Playing Audio" opened. On the window was a bar similar to the one shown while loading/downloading something. Above the bar said "Detecting Problems" and then "Scanning for hardware changes...". This went on for about 10 seconds. After this, the window changed. At the top in blue was "Troubleshooting has completed". Under that was "The troubleshooter made some changes to your system. Try attempting the task you were trying to do before." In the center of the window was "Problems found-Hardware changes might not have been detected".
In the search bar, I typed "Manage audio devices". When I opened it up, the window told me that there were no audio devices installed. I have checked in Device management under "sound, video and gam... Read more

The first thought, have you tried reinstalling the Sound Drivers? either from the motherboard vendor or if you have RealTek you can get the latest from RealTek and install that.

Hi everybody

I get windows update error code 2 on installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows 7, Vista, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 x64 (KB2978128)
I have also some other errors installing Internet Explorer 11.

I have used "sfc /scannow" command but it didn't find any integrity violations. the CBS log is attached.

I have also used SUR and the log file can be found attached to this post.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

I have a problem with updates that try to install every time PC restart.
They give me everytime error code 80070490 and if I try to press Try again then give me error code 8024AFFF.
I try to solve the problem with Microsoft FixIt, then update was installed succesfully, but after restart they try to install it again (everytime the same update) and give the same error.

I found some solution on the net that not work for me:
1. Windows Update error 80070490
2. Error code 0x80070490 when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates
3. Code Error 80070490 checking for Windows Updates - Microsoft Community

I not use first option becouse I not have original DVD, I have a PC with preinstalled system Windows 7 Home Premium.

Anyone have any ideo how to solve this problem?

A:Windows Important Security Update Error

Since it's 18 hours since you posted this with no response, I'd say it may be because you didn't provide the info that this forum requires. Run the SURT program, the sfc scan, and post the logs that are requested in the instructions found here:
Windows Update Posting Instructions
Hopefully then you get a better response. I'm new here too and just learning the ropes, BTW.

Hello All;

New member who needs help, thank you in advance.
System Software:
Windows XP SP3
Norton360 Antivirus
Webroot Spysweeper 5.5

First, Security Center and Windows Update is disabled and when I try to enable it I get a error 1058.

"Could not start the Security Center or Windows Update service on Local Computer Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated w/ it."

When I attempt to manually restart the services, the error appears again. Ran both spyware and virus scan with nothing found. I have attached a copy of my hjt file for review. Again, any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I had some spyware and used spyware doctor to clean the system and it is now clean according to spyware doctor. The issue is the red security sheild is in the sys tray and tells me auto update is off when I know it is on as I have it set to let me know of any updates. I went into services.msc and tried to turn on the auto update service but it keeps going back to disable. The 2 times it took it and when I went to start the service it gave me the error 1058. Also, I went to restore my system back a few days and it would not let me go back to any of my restore dates. Below is hijack log. This is the first time I have used hijackthis so I hope I have copied what you may need. Thanks for any help fixing my problem.

I have been trying to get my automatic updates to work but can't. Windows security says they are off but when I go into the control panel they are on. I did some research and tried to change it manually, but got an error 1058. Please help.
Thanks,
Amy

A:Please help, error 1058

Hello Amy, Welcome to TSF!

Hi forum,

I'm having some problem about a week ago with Microsoft security essentials bugging out on me and not opening or updating. Basically the message I got on opening MSE was windows cannot access specified path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file. Upon reading this about a week ago, I think! I proceeded to foolishly downloading a Zeroroot access program and a few MSE alternatives. Since then I have still been unable to re-install MSE by deleting all components in the registry.

The error code I get with trying to re-install MSE is 0x80070643

Having then unistalled the zeroaccess program and the previous alternative antivirus programs, I still cannot get MSE working, and I now have a windows 7 update error. The new system update I believe may be to do with security as-well!! The error code on doing a windows 7 update is 80070005, and it did cut out at 9% every time. (although now I think it is just 0%)
Can someone please help me as I have had a very successful streak of avoiding viruses by always usin MSE. I don't want, and can't afford to get a virus attack, not to mention Im runnign windows 7 ultimate so I need the windows 7 updates too because the ultimate can be dodgy sometimes. Nb the update I cannot do is 1.4mb but I am anticipating windows will throw me a new update any day soon which could be anywhere from 30mb to 200mb and it could fail all of it leaving me prone to attacks.

I can post my specs, ... Read more

I have not been able to complete windows update for quite some time now. Keep getting failed security update error 0X80073712. I have an HP Compaq machine with Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit. I ran sfc /scannow. That log states some things could not be repaired. I dont know what to do from here.

You may have some malware. Do you have antivirus installed? If so run a scan with it and see what it finds. Also, download Malwarebytes and run a scan with it to see what it finds. To get Malwarebytes click HERE. It's free. Run the scans then try to run Windows Update and report back.~winipcfgASCII question, get an ANSI

We're running Windows XP SP2. We tried vundu.org, but nothing showed up there. Then went to HijackThis, and here is our log: (Any and all help is greatly appreciated. )

Dear techguy or chic,

I am having issues with an older secondary computer used once in a blue moon mostly by visiting nieces and nephews (I know - total mistake). I realized I had an issue a few days ago when I turned it on. According to my logs the initial infection occurred on 11/25. Prior to learning this I made a poor knee jerk reaction to download a registry cleaner program and this just added to my headaches. Registry fix did allow me to boot the computer without going through the backdoor of "last safe restart" but the onslaught of pop-up ads was insane hence I knew I was dealing with something more than just an old and abused PC.

Steps Iíve taken in the course of trying to figure out what was going on 1) scandisk, 2) disk cleanup, 3) disk defrag, 4) backed up all files and deleted unnecessary files, 5) downloaded hijack and malware as directed by your site in other threads 6) ran virus scan with updated files, 7) shut down restore points (all were wiped by virus anyway) rebooted and redid all of the above as suggested by MacAfee 8) rebooted and scanned again.

PC was disconnected from the web unless I needed an update.

Each scan/fix appears to be the one that kills the little bugger but within 20 minutes to three hours of being connected to the Internet the little devil is back. Can I really kill this thing or is it like a bad Freddy Kruger series?

Any help is welcomed but if it would be wiser to just buy a new hard drive let me know as I am afraid of... Read more

Hi,

I am currently working on cleaning up a relative's laptop of malware. One of the things I noticed when I ran Spybot S&D was that it noted that Windows Security Center (along with Windows Firewall) is turned off. Registry settings for this service seem fine, and the service is set to Automatic start-up in services.msc , but something is stopping it from starting, and whenever I try to start it, I get an error 1058. (I have successfully restored Windows Firewall but I am not sure if it will be disabled once more.) A HiJackThis scan seemed to come up clean, and I have cleaned up infections found by Avast! and am running a SUPERAntiSpyware scan right now.

Thanks!

A:Windows 7 Professional Security Update failure (Error Code 80000ffff)

.NET 3.5 is part ofWindows 7 - so we can't use the usual trick of uninstalling/cleaning it out.

There are a mass of what appear to be simple download failures in the update log file - but nothing informative in the CBS.log file
These failures relate to updates as early as KB2862973.

Please run the CheckSUR tool, and post the CheckSUR.log file

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

Sometimes this works. Uninstall the printer port then reinstall. (Even if its USB) When reinstalling make sure to let windows connect to the internet for the best possible driver update. Also insure that you have the lastest board drivers for your MB.

When things started getting screwy today I ran a scan with Norton Internet Security 2009 which detected Trojan Vundo and supposedly removed it (not so much though). Right around that time My NIS 09 "advanced protection" was disabled and despite numerous attempts to "fix it", it told me it can't fix it.Also Windows Automatic Updates were disabled. I tried restarting it through advanced tools but get nothing but the 1058 error.I am now getting a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" error which brings on a 1 minute timed countdown to restart my computer. I have to run "shutdown -a" to stop it from restarting.I ran Norton's FixVundo program which took 3 hours to tell me it couldn't find anything.I do not have Spybot installed.I installed/updated/full scanned using Ad-Aware 2008. It found about a dozen infected files and deleted them all. Then I generated a HiJackThis log which is below:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 9:46:04 PM, on 1/5/2009Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16762)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\s... We're in a trial period for Windows Live OneCare, and it has repeatedly found and "removed" two trojans, Vundo and another one, con-something. System Restore is not working...no restore points, nor can I create one. Windows Automatic Updates are disabled, and no matter what I do, they will not turn on, or they seem to turn on, only to turn off again moments later. When we try to turn them on, we often get an error message 1058, saying it's either disabled or it has nothing associated with it. I'm underwhelmed by OneCare. Is there a better trojan removing scanning program I should try? Ahem...a better one that's also free or at least has a free trial period? Thank you for any help you can offer!

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

These two images basically sum up my issue. I cannot install these two updates shown. I upgraded from Windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit, which is what I am running now. Help a brother out, how can I fix this?

A:Error 643 on Security Update

Since the 643 return code is a generic one, either use the Fixit or the steps to manually enable Windows Installer logging under For computers that are running Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 as it also applies to Windows 7, found on this MSKB -

You receive error code 0x80070643 or error code 0x643 when you use the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

Disable Windows Installer logging after the updates fail to install. Then please post the contents of the log -
Click Start, type %temp% in the Search programs and files field
Double-click the Microsoft Installer log file.

Note Typically, the Microsoft Installer log file starts with "Msi" and has the .log file name extension. For example, the name of the Microsoft Installer log file may resemble Msib3a6g.log.

Hello,

I have a Win2K SP4 (all Critical Updates) laptop that has a weird quirk I noticed recently. I have installed the Security Update KB819696 (Unchecked Buffer in DirectX Could Enable System Compromise) a few times, but it never asks to reboot when finished and will always show up as a critical update even when I have manually rebooted the laptop.

Any idea on what could be causing this and how to solve it? Recently there has been some problems with malware/spyware/adware (which is cleaned) and perhaps something in the registry was corrupted or deleted as a result. Other than that, everything seems to work fine. Thanks for your help.

A:Security Update KB819696 in Windows Update even after installing it.

I've had that happen on more than one occasion. MS eventually fixed the problem but your case may be due to other factors.

Here's what Doug Knox offers:

Usage: Download xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs and save it to your hard drive. Double click the VBS file you downloaded and you'll be prompted to enter the KBxxxxxx or Qxxxxxx number of the Hotfix. No checking is done to see if the Hotfix is actually installed on your system, so its your responsibility to ensure that it is.

Note: I cannot guarantee that this will work for ALL HOTFIXES. Using the tools at my disposal, I have determined how the majority of checking is done for the presence of a particular hotfix. This mechanism may not be the same for all Hotfixes and could change at any time.

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

Hello, everyone!

So a little background first...

My dad's PC was loading up Windows (black screen), so I pop out the hard drive and do an error check and virus scan on my computer. Everything turned out OK, put the hard drive back in and Windows starts up.

Now, however, even though the internet connection is fine, I'm getting timeouts when trying to go to Windows Update or when updating Security Essentials. Strangely enough, I tried installing other anti-virus programs and experienced connection issues.

I also ran the drive through Malware Bytes and came up clean, so I'm not really sure where to go from here. My dad has some older software that he'd like to keep but doesn't have the original disks to reinstall, so a format would be a last resort.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!!

A:Windows Update & MS Security Essentials Update timeouts

Are you saying that you cannot connect to Windows Update?

If not....what is the exact error message?

<<My dad's PC was loading up Windows (black screen)...>>

Are you saying that it would not boot completely...and that it halted at a black screen with blinking cursor in upper left hand corner?

What happens if you try to connect to www.microsoft.com?

I found some questionable files this week that had been downloaded by my son. I have since spent a great deal of time trying to scan and clean the computer. Each malware/spyware/anti-virus scanner has had varying levels of success.

It seems that the bulk of my issues have been resolved but I am still unable to install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719177)

Each time I try to update it, it aborts and gives me an error code (80073712), that is not showing up in any google searches or searches of microsoft's site.

Additionally, every time I shutdown or restart the computer it shows that new updates are being installed.

I am using Windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

Got it !!!!
If You are using notebooks with with hard drive larger than 700 GB you probably should update Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver.

I recently used malwarebytes to remove a fake anti-virus program and some other issues. The fake anti-virus appears to be gone, however I can only update Windows Security Essentials manually (Error Code 0x80072ee7), and the windows update site (windowsupdate.microsoft.com) gives me a "Page Cannot be Displayed" error message. Other sites appear to work fine.

Also, after having Firefox or IE open for a few minutes, a new tab gets opened telling me I've won some sort of prize.

Below are the results from running GMER and DDS

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. I think this is the first time in years that I have had trouble installing security updates, and it's update KB3069114. Attempts to install this update all failed with code 80073712, so I did some search and found many possible solution. I first tried sfc /scannow, Windows said something was fixed with details in log file, I tried to open the log file and an "access denied" error came up and the file was essentially blank. I then tried WindowsUpodate troubleshooter (screenshot), it said 3 things were fixed, so I tried to install the update again, and it's just stuck at 8% (see screenshot). I thought about the situation and decided to run WindowsUpdate troubleshooter twice in a row, both times it said the same 3 things were fixed, from that I think the troubleshooter is full of it. If whatever problem was fixed on 1st run why did it show same fixes on 2nd run?

Any suggestion?

Welcome to the forum!

Are you using a 3rd party internet security software? If you are, and you have the licensing data backed up, uninstall and get Windows 10 situated and settled before reinstalling the 3rd party software, ensuring that it is W10- compatible.

If you are not, might the problem be internet access-related?

I have three security updates that repeatedly fail to install, they are:
KB2656353, KB2656370 and KB2572067.
I receive the following error code: Ox643

These are Security Updates for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86.

My OS is Windows XP, I use Firefox.

I am not what you call tech savy so please put answers in non-tech format.

I have attempted several options: Microsoft Fix-It with it's suggestions.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi there and thank you in advance for any help. Highly appreciated.

My computer is not installing Win Security Updates. I keep getting this message:

'RESTART YOUR COMPUTER TO INSTALL IMPORTANT UPDATES, Win can't update important files and services while the system is using them'.

This started after I installed Win10 two months ago, but successfully reinstalled Win7 after a week.

Only the Security Updates are pending, with error code 80242014.

These are some of 11 pending updates: KB2952664, KB3134214, KB3134814.

When running Win Update Troubleshooter I get Update error 0x80070057.

Here are logs on OneDrive:

Hi everyone *waves*.
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, so apologies in advance if it isn't.

My XP (home edition, version 2002, SP2) keeps trying to download Security download KB22770 and keeps failing.

What's wrong, or what do you need to know to get it downloaded?

Thanx in advance.

A:Solved: Security Update Error

Is that all?? When I installed the latest security update it screwed up Internet Explorer totally, so much I actually had to do a system restore.

Oh, and the same happened with the last update a month ago. Is it just me (I'm told not...) or is the update system now creating more problems than it's solving??

Windows updates not working for a while. Initial was 8007370B appearing in the Windows Update window when searching for updates. Found bad memory using Memtest86+ and pulled the stick. Other stick no errors after 8 passes.

Toshiba HDD installed. Ran two different HDD diagnostics test on it and it passed.

No conflicts in device manager.

Now, Windows Update window showing 80070002 error. Based upon instructions, ran System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) but that appears to have not made any resolution. Ran it twice to ensure it ran successfully.

Then, ran the Windows Update Diagnostic.diagcab from go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=231149 and it shows Windows Update error 0x8007370B(2014-09-18-T-06_58_30P) as NOT FIXED. All other items in list shows as FIXED.

SFC /scannow will not run ... displaying the message "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation". I tried the same in a elevated prompt in normal windows and in safe mode with the same result. No luck running Surface Scan.

Ran chkdsk /r twice also.

Screen captures of both errors and CBS log file attached. Any help is greatly appreciated. In the meantime, I will begin running some antimalware scans just in case.

Thanks for any assistance.

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

We need that data whether or not either CheckSUR or SFC complete.

Hello JustinBarnettWelcome to BleepingComputer ==========================One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit. This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Hi,

I am a college student at home on break and my parents asked me to try and fix the family computer which was, at the time, completely hosed. That being said, I have little knowledge of what was done on the computer in the past or what they did that could have gotten it so infected.

After booting up the computer, it was essentially unusable so the first thing I did was run System Recovery. After that I was at least able to run Windows XP normally to some degree and boot in Safe Mode as well. Upon booting it up, the computer kept popping up "XP Anti-spyware 2011" windows and wouldn't let me access any websites or run any other programs so I switched over to Safe Mode. In Safe Mode I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Registry Mechanic. Each program found a large number of problems (I didn't think to save the logs at the time) and then continued to fix them.

The computer now runs much more smoothly when booted normally, and does not show any obvious signs of malware. However, I am unable to run Windows Update or access the windows update website and am having the same problems with Security Update. Also, when trying to access anti-virus/trojan/spyware websites or forums I will occasionally get redirected to random search engine links. Because of these problems I am assuming that there is still some type of virus/trojan/spyware left on the computer.

In terms of the checklist given in the "Ne... Read more

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log... Read more

Possibly, you're still infected.Since you used some cleaning tools already and it didn't help...With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team. I would like you to start a new thread and post a DDS log HERE and include a link to this thread. Please make sure that you read the information about getting started before you start your thread. It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. I've been trying to update Security Essentials now for a couple weeks and I keep getting the following error message:

I am running Win7 64. What is causing this error and how do I fix it?

I haven't updated Win7 in quite some time, perhaps that's it?

I didn't want to do all of the updates to keep getting notifications/pushes to upgrade to Win10 - I don't want it and want to stay on Win7.

Thanks.

A:Security Essentials is giving error when trying to update

Hi:

Yes, the fact that you have not updated Windows with important security patches for "quite some time" may be contributing to your problem.

The free upgrade offer from Win7 to Win10 ended months ago.
There are no more "GWX" reminders.
So there is currently no solid reason to refuse important security patches for Windows and your other MS software (e.g. MS Office).
If you are missing one or more months worth of security updates, your system is vulnerable.

As a general principle (with rare exceptions), one should install at least ALL "critical" and "important" SECURITY updates.
The decision to install "Recommended" and "Optional" patches, especially those that are not security-related, is up to the user. You'll need to read the descriptions of each available patch to determine if it applies to or might be needed for your system.

I do not use MSE.
So I cannot help specifically with the error message you report.
But, for starters, I would suggest running Windows Update manual checks and installing ALL available "Critical" and "Important" SECURITY updates.
It may have to be done in batches, depending on how many of them you are missing.
In other words, do not try to install 20 or 30 security patches all at once.
I suggest leaving ".NET framework" patches for last.

And you will need to reboot several times during the process, when prompted.
It's a good idea NOT to use the computer for... Read more

hi...
i have microsoft security essentials installed on my machine. But when ever i try to update, it comes up with this error code "0X8024400a" saying that there is some error in the internet settings and MSC could not be updated . What should i do to update my antivirus??
Well there is one more thing. Previously i do not have an internet connection to this computer so i installed updates on some other computer and then manually updated my MSC using those updates. That was done on 29th December 2011, after this MSC updated itself 5 days ago i.e. on 6th January 2012, but since then there is no update at all. I try to update it by clicking on the update button but it comes up with the above code.. Please help me
I also checked Microsoft website for this but the procedure mentioned there did not help me.

Please post some suggestions.

A username and password are being requested by http://will.manufacturevs.top. The site says:
"Security Update Error 0xB6201879 Help Desk: +1 (888) 944-5714 (TOLL-FREE)"

What I've done so far:
Ran "AdwCleanear" version 6.010 - I allowed AdwCleaner to clean the check issues (there were 25), and rebooted.
Ran "Farbar Recovery Scan Tool", 64 bit version because that's my OS.  I ran this as the Administrator and saved both the "FRST.TXT" and "Addition.txt", which are uploaded in this post
Ran "Junkware Removal Tool" as an administrator and have uploaded the "JRT.TXT" file in this post.
My System:
Computer - Dell Precision M6800
Memory - 32Mb
OS - Windows 7, Service Pack 1, 64 Bit
I've restarted WaterFox and haven't seen the message posted in "Quote" above yet, but it's only been about 1 hour.

Hello sevenforums, Today I installed 8 important updates one failed - "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2898785)". I use firefox should I ignore the failed update or make sure that it is installed properly so I don't cause future problems. The update is "Important" it says so i the view installed updates.

One of the 8 updates was - "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" I uninstalled IE11 because it messed up my weather desktop gadget, and I didn't plan on using IE11.

I tried the standalone installer for the failed updated and got the "this update is not applicable to your computer" message. The only thing I can think of doing now is using system restore and trying to install the updates again. My antivirus was not disabled during the installation of the updates. Should I disable it? It never caused problems with any of my previous updates.

Thank you for any help.

I have been getting help from Arc over on the BSOD section of this forum site for a few weeks now. I figured I'd start a thread here about the update troubles I've been experiencing over the past few days as well. There is one update that won't apply no matter what I try. I've run the amalgamated .bat tool posted on this forum and that didn't solve my issue. I will let my logs and screenshots speak for themselves from here, though.

Thanks in advance for any help!

As stated in the title, error code is 80073712. Also, I can't seem to get my CBS logs to upload. I keep getting an internal server error about the resource not being available. The screenshot attached perfectly fine. I will try to either edit this post to add them or add them as a comment.

Still can't get the CBS.zip to upload. I will attach a screenshot of the error page. I'll try it again later.

When I try to install KB3182373, a "Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight", Windows Update reports failure with the message "Code 643 Windows Update encountered an unknown error".
I ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab. It reported that "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem".
What can I do to fix this? I'm running Windows 7 Professional.

it shut off windows auto-updater and now requests that i turn it back on with weird warning pop up boxes and whenever i click the x(close) button or any button it opens up a random windows looking security website, i also seem to have a problem blocking pop-ups whenever an internet browser is open, which before this happened was never a problem

A:DCOM [10005] - DCOM got error "%1058"

Hi,Your system is severly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show. Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution. So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused. In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts. * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofixPost the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

I recently bought Norton Internet Security and installed it. "When I ran the Live Update, I kept getting the error message, "LiveUpdate must update Symantec Redirector. Please install this update first, and run LiveUpdate Again". I looked up the error message on Symantec's support pages, and after readign about 25 pages, rebooting 100 times and 9 hours later, I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times, and followed every little detail that they said to do. Well, I'm still getting the same error message that I need to install the Symantec Redirector, but the problem is that Live Update DOES NOT List that update as one of the options! I've exhausted all the info in their knowledge base and I can't find anything else about it. Can anybody help me?
