I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I also tried downloading updates from Microsoft Download Center but when I try to install them it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

My friends computer was very slow so I took a look at it. Installing and running malwarebytes + microsoft security essentials and it had hundreds of instances of worms, trojans etc.

After scanning with them once and removing them and rescanning them nothing shows up but I still can't download any updates from windows update. It gets stuck at downloading 0kbs/0% progress but downloading things from the webbrowser works fine.

MSE found Trojan:Win32/Bladi!rts in the file c:\program files\Tencent\Adplus\Adplus.dll

And malwarebytes found: worm.KoobFace, trojan.BHO and some other trojans, rogue virusremover and some other stuff.

Hello aberwyn,

I'm having an odd problem. When I goto the Windows Update site, it scans my computer for updates I require. After choosing from the list I want to download, I start the download process. However, I keep getting the message that download failed for each of the files I try to download.

I can manually download updates by going to the downloads section of the MS site. I was able to use the update site about 6 weeks ago, however I have a feeling that by using AdAware, I might have deleted something inadvertently.

I have no problem downloading from other sites. I have disabled my firewall to see if that was causing the issue, but it didn't help.

Your assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi I'm a university student having a bit of trouble, for a project I have to install Windows 8.1 64 bit on several machines including updates.

As you can imagine updating each machine individually can be extremely time consuming. I was wondering if there's a way to manually download all the latest windows update files and put them in the Windows 8.1 ISO, so that once Windows is installed on the machine it will be up to date.

sorry if I haven't explained myself correctly

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:
6 GB RAM
AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3
Vista SP2

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... It will depend on which version of Windows 10 you have. If it is a Windows Home version, there is nothing that you can do at the present time. It is automatic and you don't have a choice If it is a Windows 10 Pro version, then you can schedule the time of update installations and even defer the updates, as in all or none! Take a look at the following article at the How-to-Geek. It explains everything you need to know about  Windows Update(s) in Windows  10.http://www.howtogeek.com/223068/what-you-need-to-know-about-windows-update-on-windows-10/

But here are my current issues:

Randomly I get a rotary dial from the PC, usually that happens when the PC is in SLeep Mode and doesn't want to revive.

Malwarebytes no longer updates automatically and neither does MSE.

When trying to run Windows Update I receive a error message, trying to correct it I can not, because the BITS is missing. Although in MTB it does not show a BITS issue

Hello ImmaNoob I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

As always your comments/suggestions are very welcome.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

Hello there,This is my first post. I believe I have a virus issue - Win32/Alureon.A exists on my PC. I understand that this may be responsible for the re-direction issues I am experiencing when using Google. What happens is that I select a particular website from the returned Google search list and Google redirects me to another website. In trying to fix this I went to windows update to make sure I was up to date. I was unable to manually execute Windows Update. Then I realised that I had not been getting the relevant updates.I then activated Windows Defender. I had it turned off as I use the AVG Anti Virus software protection (free version). I then did a scan using a Microsoft product "something scanner" which took hours to run. I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1.

I want to manually check for updates, make Windows download them if there is any, but wouldn't install at that moment, instead make Windows install them next time I shut it down.

In Windows XP, it was easy. You just selected the option to download. And when you attempt to shut down Windows, it asked if you want to shut down normally, or you want to install updates while shutting down.

However, in Windows 7, I couldn't find a way to do this same behavior. Can you please tell me how to, if there is any way to do it?

A:How to: Manually, download updates but not install

Use this address to find the updates you want
in the right hand corner theres a search box, type in your windows version
then find the specific files you want\need
then save them wherever you want

Handy for reinstalls without having to download everything again
Stop Windows Update in services first
then run your updates
then START WU again and check for updates

Hi guys,

I've just put my Dell Studio back to factory settings after having it for two years and deciding to give it a rebirth. I maintain my laptop very well but always like to do a reset every so often.

The problem I'm having now is that the damn thing wont update from Windows Update. It will identify that there are 76 important or critical downloads, but hangs at 0% downloading.

I went to the MS catalogue and tried to download manually, but even though I had the updates selected in my basket, again, it just hung on 0%.

I've ran Kasperskys TDS, the Malicious Tool Removal MS thingy-ma-jig, ran an sfc check where it did note there were corrupt files but it couldn't fix them. The Fix It link to the MS Update Not Working thing found no problems either.

So, I'm scratching my head and going to do a restart and see what's going on.

Any help greatly appreciated as this is doing my nut in.

Cheers!

-Update

Interestingly, I've just reset and it's telling me the system had to be restarted to finish installing updates, but when you click on it for more info, there's no updates listed. Bloody liar.

A:Will not download Updates automatically or manually via MS Catalogue

Welcom to the forum
If you'r facing a problem in WU then use the tool provided by MS to resolve this problem:

Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

If after that the problem persist and you say that you reset every so often, then consider to dowload your same version of your OS from:

Good luck

I have a limited wifi issue. Toshiba states update KB3114149 may solve the issue. I can't determine if this update was included when I upgraded to 10586/1511 as it is not listed in Update History.

Is there a way to manually download that update ?

I am having several problems with Vista, on an Acer Aspire 5100. First, when I turn it on, I receive a message "ATI External Event Utility EXE Module has stopped working" I have reinstalled all of my ATI drivers, still nothing, and cant I find any working solutions anywhere online.

The other problem is that I cant download any updates through Windows Update, with an error code "80246008". This points to a problem with the BITS service. This service refuses to start, with an error message "1068". All of its dependencies are working though, except COM+ Event System, which, when I force it to start, it stops again, saying it isn't needed. I have checked several Knowledge Base articles on this, and according to them, BITS should be working, I cant find a reason for it not to. All of these services I have set to automatically start, and restarted my computer, but they still don't start, or stay running.

I am posting these two problems in the same thread because they started at the same time, for apparently no reason. I think they are connected, but don't know how.

Any help is appreciated.

Recently, when trying to download Windows Updates for important updates, the progress stays at 0KB, 0% complete and doesn't go any further. Tried downloading for several hours and still with no luck. (Currently have 7 important updates available at 28.1MB)

I've checked Windows Update history and Windows Defender definition updates are being automatically downloaded/installed with seemingly no issue.

Ok, so here we go. I recently had an issue where my sound went out on the computer and i recieve a message saying "no audio output device installed" or something like that. After trying to fix it for weeks, i have come to the conclusion that the sound chip or whatever is destroyed.

~REASON FOR POST~ (windows vista home premium, 32 bit)

After a reset to factory default, i procedded to run the windows update. The first few updates went smoothly (roughly 80 over a 3 day period). Recently i recieved a notice that 4 updates were ready to be installed (security update for microsoft office 2007 KB951550, security update for microsoft office 2007 KB951994, the 2007 microsoft office suite service pack 2, and update for the 2007 microsoft office system KB967642). Everytime i try to install these updates they fail, and i am not recieving any new updates from microsoft. Also when i go to log out (please bare with me on this description) the button that looks like a circle with a line through it (log out button im assuming) has the icon signaling to log off and install updates. When i try this the computer logs down, begins installing updates, but it fails because when i log back in the icon is still signaling me to log out and install.

I have tried to use microsoft fix it and i recieve this error: Fix it troubleshooting cannot continue because an error occured, we're sorry, but the diagnostic solution encountered a runtime error. please try again later.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

Somewhere, probably on one of these forums, it was suggested I use Microsoft Fix it to clean my Windows update queue, but its not working. I let it run for over an hour and a half. It never moves past 'Installing PowerShell please wait'. Update sits at 'downloading 0%' and never downloads the updates.

When I do get Windows updates to download in the past, the Sound chip/RealTek Digital output produces no sound.

I've checked the HDMI cable, its fine when I use my monitor as a television. Plug the cable back into the computer; no sound but I get a picture. Also, not currentl;y getting sounds out of my computer. None.

Sometimes deleting all of the sound devices in Device Manager brings the sound output back, occasionaly it doesn't.

Any suggestions on how to fix these two problems ?

No, getting another computer, nor upgrading the OS, aren't options.

I figured updating all the windows updates would help solve this, but i'm unable to. I keep getting error code 800B0100 when I try to DL them. What error message did you receive when you attempted to install the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Can you please try it again and note down the error message and code if you can't remember.

After that, let's jump in with the big guns logs!

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, copy the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file into your new CBS folder on your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Hi Guys ......... I'm new to the site. I apologize if this post is in the wrong section.

Backstory: I purchased a Gateway NE56R47U shipped with Windows 8 in late 2013. I attempted UNSUCCESSFULLY to upgrade to 8.1 in December 2013 with an 0x80070004 error. Prior to this 8.1 attempt, I was receiving all the windows updates. So out of total frustration, and a lack of a technical fix, I gave up and ran the laptop as is. I researched Microsoft Community, but I never saw a solution to my problem. I ran across your site my accident, and I'm glad I did. Now with the upcoming Windows 10 free upgrade on the horizon, I NEED to upgrade to 8.1 to comply with the upgrade requirements. But first I need to get ALL the Windows 8 updates I've missed since 12/13 installed on this laptop, and upgrade to 8.1 from the Windows Store.

In the past week I've tried numerous attempts to receive the win updates with limited success, I'm able to get Office 2010 updates, but nothing concerning Windows 8. I've ran the SFC scan and the DISM tool to the degree where they both come back clean with no errors. I've ran the Microsoft (FixIt) Windows Update trouble shooter numerous times where it says it has fixed all of the errors it finds. Looking at the Windows Update log, it states the 'Window Update Agent 7.8.9200.1694 failed'. This has produced two errors (8007371C and 800703F1), from subsequent tries.

So, I haven't been able to get any 8.0 win updates to download, either automatically or m... Read more

We have 2 computers, 3 smartphones an Xbox and a Wii.  1 computer, 3 smartphones, the Xbox and the Wii all connect to the internet just fine.  Other computer cannot connect to the internet.  I can download Windows updates and I can access my work computer remotely using Remote Desktop Connection.  When I try to connect to the internet, I get the message, "This page can't be displayed." I then click the "Fix Connection Problem" button and it says, "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem."  The computer was infected recently with Malware which TdsKiller removed but the internet access on this computer has not been the same.  Initially it was very slow and then it would not connect and then when I tried again, it would.  Then I had to reset the router to get it to work.  Now resetting router does not work.I tried to install a new browser on the computer (i downloaded it on other computer and then saved it to a flashdrive) but when I tried to install it on the problem computer, it said I needed to connect to the internet to install.  Not sure how to fix.

For almost a year I haven't been able to download a single update for Windows 7 (Have around 75 pending important updates to download). Sometime ago, I recall stumbling across a backdoor virus on my PC. It prevented me from accessing any of my programs, including the internet. I had to go into safe mode to remove the virus. A few days later I had pending operating system updates. When I went to update, it was unable to even gain access online (my internet connection was fine). Microsoft Security Essentials also, was compromised and unable to update itself. I was able to correct it, though Windows Update has remained the same.

I have attempted to clean-boot up Windows, in hopes that it had been Malware Bytes that was blocking the updates all along. The Updater was able to find out that I had 75 pending updates, though when it went to actually download them, it was unable to and gave me an error code, 80246008. I have seen another post from a user here that had a similar problem, but I'm not sure him and I have the exact issue. (Windows 7 cannot check for updates & error 0x80070002)

I've had problems with Windows XP, 7 before. But nothing this frustrating or difficult to figure out. Any help you can give me would greatly be appreciated.

I'm doing some work on a friend's computer. I'm getting browser redirects when going to security related sites (Kapersky.com, mcafee.com) and I'm also unable to download updates for windows. This (from what I can see) has been happening since August. I know, I know. She just feels bad asking me for help? Lame excuse, I know, but what can you do? Anyways. I've run several scans with AVG 2011 free, spybot search and destroy and ccleaner. Removed a few things, but problems persist. I've followed the documentation on what to do and here are my logs!

No problems running DDS. Here is the contents of the dds.txt file. Attach.txt is ... um... attached. The GMER log is also attached.
 Attach.txt   10.93KB

 gmer.log   21.95KB

Thank you so much! Look forward to hearing your reply!

HiPlease do the following:Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it to iexplore before saving it. Save it to your desktop. Change the save as file type to "all files"**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, delete it, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

After repeated problems with the update failing I did a clean install and installed kb3200970 manually from the windows catalogue and it shows as an installed update. Windows automatic updates wants to download and install it again. Is this really necessary? Any way to make it stop???

Windows update does not download anything. There are 20 important updates. I tried choosing just one of them, the screen displays 'Downloading updates...', but nothing is downloaded. I tried rebooting but this did not work. What could possibly be wrong? I have scanned my laptop with Avast, Malwarebytes, etc & nothing was found. I have had this type of problem before and rebooting solved the problem. Not this time. Any suggestions?

Hello,My computer appears to be infected w/ some sort of malware; I think it's a Trojan.DNSChanger. Symptoms include: 1. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and http://update.microsoft.com redirect to Google. My AV software, Windows LiveOneCare, isn't able to update from Microsoft either. 2. Attempts to download Windows Defender or Windows Malicious Software Removal tool from Microsoft.com would always time out. It appears I can't download anything from Microsoft.com. (I can, however, download from other sites, e.g., http://download.cnet.com.) 3. When I try going to http://www.malwarebytes.org, Firefox says, "Firefox can't find the server at www.malwarebytes.org."I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware a couple of times. First time MBAM found (and cleaned) 7 infected registry keys, 1 infected registry value, 6 infected registry data items, & 3 infected folders. Restarted my computer per MBAM's cleanup instructions, and problems #1-3 were still present. Ran MBAM again; this time it found & cleaned 4 infected registry data items. However, problems #1-3 are still present. I've attached the MBAM logs in case they might be helpful. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Hi there,

I am new to this forum as well.. noticed many people have the same problem as myself.

I have a windows vista home premium machine with service pack 2. I am getting random redirects to webpages trying to sell spy cleaners etc, in both IE and Chrome.

I have AVG free 2011 installed.
I have run the windows mert.exe scan (full) and it didn't find anything.
I have run spybot search and destroy and it didn't find anything.

I have deleted Spybot and run the OTL and attached the log file.
It appears to have happened April 30.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

thanks,
Erik

Hi I'm running windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit OS and I installed this as an OEM product that I got from eBay. When I first installed the Windows back in March of this year, I could download and install all updates. But since then I can't download and/or install any updates which keeps me worried about my computer's overall condition that might get BSODs and other errors. I ran sfc scan and found no problems. I ran the windows update readiness tool, but it didn't install that update either!! I don't get any errors but I can send you the CBS logs that has text file because the other zipped files are very large files (around 12 MB each) that I can't upload in here. So I attached the CBS text file at the bottom. Please tell me how to fix this problem or connect me with remote network connection if you can so I can resolve this issue as it's very important that my computer can download and install updates, thank you.

For several weeks now I haven't been able to download/update Windows updates. I have been working with Microsoft Tech Support (via the telephone)for several days now and we haven't been able to correct the problem(s). My question is... can I use the Windows Installation disk to "fix" any problems my machine is having with the downloads/updates? Is there a "fix" option on the Windows disk and am I at risk in using it? I don't want to lose anything on my desktop because it is the way I want it at this time. Thanks for any responses.

Pop thr oem windows disk in and in bios set it to boot up on the cd. Do the install XP option. Don't worry it will search to see if there is a cureent version of XP on the disk. When it tell you that there is a current version on the disk it will ask you if you would like to do a repair. Do the repair. Don't worry. It looks just like a brand new instal but when it is done all your stuff is still there it's just the OS that has changed. Didn't MS suggest this? Make sure you have the Product Key available as it will ask you for it. Good luck.

I am here because of the final reply I received to this post:

Windows update settings and other questions

I cannot get WU to behave properly. At one point it quit checking my machine for needed updates. I carefully reset it to the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." and now when I shut down I am told "please wait for update 1 of 1 to install.

I ran SFC scannow and encountered no errors.

I will attempt to attach the CBS log zip file

Last night another update installed 'automatically.' This morning when I first booted I had great difficulty gaining control of my machine. I hit a black screen for a while. I can't recall all that I tried but eventually I got to a screen where I could shut down properly and when I rebooted the system ran 'normally.'

I would still like to be able to research an update before I install it, at least know what it might be doing.

thanks

I've recently repaired my OS (yes, as in repaired in boot setup via the CD...) and now Windows Update doesn't seem to work anymore!

Automatic Updates or manual updates, it doesn't seem to make a difference, I have downloaded all the critical/high priority updates from Microsoft Update, but every time I try to install them, the message reads simply 'Some of the updates could not be installed' (ie: ALL of them! - see attached images)

I've scoured Microsoft Update for ANY form of help for this, to no avail, there is no apparent error code to reference! Microsoft Update worked fine, until I experiecned an error with 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services' on shutdown last month, which was rectified by the repair...

Any thoughts?...

Hi,
Installed W7 Home Premium on a single system and for one or another reason I cannot get Windows Update to download updates for other Microsoft products. MS Office University 365, MS Visual Studio Pro 2013 and Microsoft Expression are also installed on this
system.

I click on Find Out More in the Windows Update page and IE 11 opens. It first goes to http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-au and then redirects to http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5
.
Here is a picture of the page:

As you can see there is no change settings button as described at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/change-windows-update-installation-notification#1TC=windows-7 .There is no way I can change settings so updates for other MS products are also downloaded.

Firefox is my default browser; even if I load the link in Firefox I get the same result.
Thanks,
Imran

Hello,
I'm having trouble with windows update on my Vista PC and need some help to get it fixed. If I check for updates, it will find the relevant updates OK but it fails with error 80246008 when it try's to download them.
I have done some research and found that it is throwing this error because my BITS service will not start, now further investigation leads me on to one of it's dependancies that wont start - COM+ Event system. I'm sure it is this COM+ service that is causing my problems. If I try to start it manually it throws up this error: "Windows could not start the COM+ Event system service on local computer. Error 0xc0000096".

I have searched for references to this error but haven't found much yet that relates to my problem.

I hope one of you gurus on here can help me troubleshoot this issue.

Just in case this helps others...(though DIY without expert help is risky)

Read a similar case on your forum here, and I know I should have waited, but this has been bugging me for days... so I ran Combofix and it deleted:

- ahuie.exe
-3460593599.dat

from the system32/drivers folder

- and found an infected copy of pci.sys in the same folder

I also found various ACMru entries in the Registry under the Search Assistand keys and deleted those since some referred to sdra64.exe which Malwarebytes had picked up in a scan.

All seems to be working normally now.

Hi all!

So, my pc had started downloading updates, and a few minutes later my system hung. Desktop showed on monitor, but mouse didn't move cursor, hitting keys did nothing, including good old alt ctrl del. So I waited a minute to make sure it wouldn't recover, and hit reset. On windows startup, it installed some of the updates it had started downloading before the crash. However when I got into windows it said there were 3 updates ready for download, but whenever I try to download those 3 I get an error: Code 800B0100 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Googling this I saw a suggestion to download and run System Update Readiness Tool (Checksur.exe), which I did, but still got the same error.
So I tried to do a system restore to the day before that crash...still no go.
So I tried downloading the updates manually and install them, but then I get told "The update is not applicable to your computer."

So...pardon my french, but what the hell should I do? I really really really don't want to reinstall windows...

PS: Updates that fail are KB2532531, KB2533623 and KB982018.

Hello Valle, welcome to SF!

This sometimes happens when, for some reason, things are not updated in the right order. There are loads of other reasons but for me this is the most common.

Did you take a look at: Windows Update - Reset

It can help you reset the update history and put in what you want in the order advised.

Sometimes you don't want a specific update. That is when you use this: Windows Update - Uninstall an Update

I am a computer novice - I know I've said that before. I have a Dell Inspiron 3647 with Windows 7 and use Firefox and Thunderbird. The most recent Windows update will not download. I have re-booted, unplugged everything, turned off anti-virus (Norton 360), and the little exclamation point keeps re-appearing. I've used the suggestions from Google that I could understand, but still nothing. It appears to download, shuts off my computer, but then the exclamation point. On the auto download section it says "download failed." Help will be sincerely appreciated.

Had been running Emsisoft anti malware on deep scan and found following results :four (4) fake av attempts, and trojan exploit java/cve -2010. Attempted to remove same, and was unble to do so. Keyboard and mouse froze had to unplug from power to shut down.
Ran scan again this time took more than 5 hours (normall full scan ~2 hours) reported trojan still present and again froze up as above.
Since then I have removed and reinstalled java (latest version) and uninstalled emsisoft anti malware program.
Attempted to run Dr. web, system became unstable (even in enhanced protection mode) rendered both mouse and keyboard ineffective, again had to power down.
Rebooted in safe mode was able to run Dr. web in quick scan, which reported no malicious activity. However, when exiting message came on saying part of application was disabled and did not run.
All of this came about because I am unable to install MS security patches. Virus or malware is blocking same.
I have had experience with running GMER program in past and tried several runs each time system either rebooted or shut down, with out indicating any root kit activity.
Will attach GMER log and DDS log as requested.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. As of now I am missing four possibly five critical MS security patches, and have to click mouse 3 or 4 times for any actions to occur. Prior to the blocking system was running without incidence

I'm a computer tech here in KS. I've been working on a customers laptop since I came in this morning, and this problem is driving me mad. In the past I've rendered good results from support at bleepingcomputers, and hope the same in this situation.

Basically, this customers laptop refuses to allow updates. Any microsoft KB article related to this problem I have done, and redone, as well as various suggestions on the net. I just recently tried reseting the update system, and BITS, with no luck because now when I try to re enable update and bits through cmd as administrator, I now get an access denied return.

Like I said, I've tried everything short of reinstalling (we make it a policy to stray from reformats or re-installs); I can't even do an upgrade in any timely fasion because as usual, the customer forgot to bring their disk while they are running vista x64, and I just have the 32 bit disk. I've heard repair via upgrade works, but that isn't an option.

So I need to get rid of the access is denied, and see if any of my efforts have paid off which I highly doubt.

Thanks in advance for any help!

A:Windows update unable to check for updates.

I'm a computer tech here in KS. I've been working on a customers laptop since I came in this morning, and this problem is driving me mad. In the past I've rendered good results from support at bleepingcomputers, and hope the same in this situation.Basically, this customers laptop refuses to allow updates. Any microsoft KB article related to this problem I have done, and redone, as well as various suggestions on the net. Found something that worked. Removed folders related to updates in C:\windows\softwaredistribution . WU went off without a hitch. Don't see a way to remove the thread. You may delete/lock this if you wish. Thanks anyways.

Thanks for your time. For some time now, Vista (64-bit) has not been able to install two updates on my computer, specifically KB943899 and 943411. The two always fail. Other updates that appear will come along and install fine, leaving these two as fails everytime. The code in Window's Update is 800736CC. I click "Get Help" and see nothing helpful.

I moved onto trying stand alone updates and they fail as well. Once downloaded, I run them, and get "wusa.exe - Bad Image C:\Windows\system31\wuapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support" followed by "Installer encountered an error: 0x800700c1 %1 is not a valid Win32 application". This is the same error for both WUs.

Did a little looking around, haven't seen anything at seems to match my problem exaclty. Did see some people with the same error message under Windows XP who were asked to Run sfc /purgecache and sfc /scannow. Did both, sfc /scannow results in a few minutes of scanning then the window closes at 100% with no information, I assume it had no problems to report.

A:Windows Update unable to install two updates.

1) Go to your "Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder. You should see
a bunch of folders with random looking names

2) Look in each of these folders until you find one that has a .cab file
with a name that contains the update number that failed (i.e.
Windows6.0-KB929427-x86-EXPRESS.cab or something similar). If you can't find
the cab file there should be some other file in the folder that indicates its
number.

3) Backup then delete the entire folder (the one with the random looking
name) that contains that cab file

4) Repeat for each of the updates that are failing for you

5) You might have to reboot at this point but I didn't have to

6) Either wait for the updater to notify you or manually check for updates

7) The updates should be available for download again

8) Let the updater download and apply the previously failed updates and it
should work this time

windows update scans my machine, comes up with the needed updates but says" windows updates were unable to be successfully installed". I was using Giant Anti-spy, Spybot and ad-Aware SE Plus for spyware and had pretty much cleaned all spys off. Then Giant became corrupted someway and so did Spybot with a BAD CHECKSUM? I then uninstalled those two spywares and bought Spysweeper. It came in on the 1st install and sweep and found afew more spys and seems to have the machine clean and running fast but still cant get my critical window updates. I was running Zone alarm for a firewall but it seemed to ask permission on every little thing so I dumped it and went back to Windows XPs Firewall. Also am trying Kasperskys Virus software. Anyone hints as to the problem?

I'd recommend downloading HijackThis from my link, run it, save a log and post it back in "Security" Birch.
MS' version of a firewall will only block inbound traffic.
Never heard of Giant but Spybot and Adaware are both excellent.

Try saving to a different location.

when i try. i cant download antivirus stuff .
I have tried to fix it by defragment, clean out desk space.

When i try and update i get the message . Error code 89b. PLEASE HELP ME

A:Unable to download anything!! or Update windows vista

Welcome confusedonline

So, you did try downloading to a different location?

What was the cause of this laptop not turning on?

Perhaps try a different browser? (If only one on the system, try downloading another one on ANOTHER system and moving the installer across).

The account you are using on the laptop, is it the administrator account?

Also, to clarify, how/what are you trying to download, Windows Updates, or just files from the web?

Do you have an anti-virus program installed, if so, what is it?

Hi Guys, Windows 7 security updates does not download, if showing N number of updates, it won't
download and the downloading shows life forever.\<o:p></o:p>
This problem has found in Windows 7 Ent and Windows
7 Ent SP1 in clean formatted PC with windows Activated and Domain not joined. Tried on several PCs and either it won't ever start or it will be showing 112 or 114 updates but it won?t ever download. Domain joined PCs have different
story, because GP options are enforced. There is no WSUS or patch management software yet on network. <o:p></o:p>
I am purely looking for an answer for this problem of Windows Update either not initiating at all if ever it is showing number of updates to be installed,
it never them downloaded and downloading screen with 0% activity is running forever. Please share any experiences and solutions. If there is a KB about it please refer. <o:p></o:p>

In ?Windows Update? I have selected the recommended option of ?install updates automatically? and left the timing at the default of ?Every day at 3:AM.? I typically shut down my computer every night, so it is not running at 3AM. After my computer is turned on will I still get the Windows Update downloads? Will they install automatically at some point?
I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit on a Dell XPS 435MT.

A:Must computer be turned on at scheduled time for Windows Update to download updates?

Yes your computer needs to be turned on. If it's not, and you don't update manually, it will simply wait until you are powered on at 3am. And, if you are never powered on at 3am, you will never update.

I am unable to update Security Essentials for the past month. I am also unable to update Windows. The URL download.microsoft.com is being redirected to the 127.0.0.1 when I ping it from the command line.

Also I cannot connect to most of the antivirus software sites from the browser.

I can download MalwareBytes, but it can't connect to its update site for downloading latest updates.

Since I have been facing this issue for almost a month, I have backed up all my data and formatted the system and installed Windows 7. After the install, I downloaded Security Essentials once again and I have the same issue all over again; neither I can update it nor I can access antivirus sites.

My computer seems to be badly infected with some persistent virus. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

When I use Google, I can search just fine, but if I click on a link (one of the search results) I am redirected to a random website, some of which are blocked by my anti-virus software saying that the website is dangerous. This doesn't only affect Google, however, it affects any search engine that I have tried (Yahoo!, Bing, Google, Ask). Another problem that I have been having is a random "Script Error" message that will pop up, saying "continue running script?" with the choices "yes" and "no." It interrupts whatever I am doing and if I hit any keys while it is open, it automatically selects "yes." I hit no whenever I can, but this pop-up issue has been preventing me from playing games, as I get interrupted and die, writing papers for school, because it constantly pops up and disallows me from concentrating or typing correctly. There seems to be no result whenever I accidentally select yes. Next, although I muted it, there is an unknown source of audio that just has a man and a woman saying random words. It almost sounds like a skype conversation, because of the influction and tone. When I created a guest account for my dad to use on my laptop, the audio was everpresent, but I could not find where it was coming from when I tried to mute it. Finally, to top off all of my computer problems, Windows desperately tries to force me to update it, but whenever it attempts to, it begins the update, then stops somewhere before ... Read more

This happened quickly. First thing I noticed was during a Windows Update. I had recently reformatted my hard drives and had a LOT of programs to download and install. It went well until the end when it refused to install three security updates and another update ( not sure which). Microsoft was stepping me through things - running "FixIt" and the Microsoft WIndows Readiness Tool. This had no effect.
I also ran system file checker. NOthing has worked. On the contrary, things appear to have gotten worse. WHen I would try to log onto ebay, or most any secure website I would get an error message - something to do with SSL. I tried it with Internet Exlorer ( I was using Mozilla Firefoxat first). Using explorer I was allowed to enter secure sites but other things stopped working.
None of the links in Outlook emails work anymore - I get a "general failure message".

I've ran with Norton, Microsoft Essentials, Malware Bytes Anti malwarem - all came back clean.

Can you help like you did before with a problem I had a year or so ago!?!?

Thanks in advance - you're the best.

Hello,

After viewing some great tech support on your forum today that looked like a similar problems I am having, I decided to join the site in hopes of getting the same help.

I went ahead and made a log1, log and info files via that .bat file mentioned in someone elses topic but I also read that I'm not suppose to post any of that until asked. Sooo... I'll wait. :0)

Problems? Well, Avast seems to have more more traces off the viruses I mentioned in the description however I am still unable to update any malware/spyware protection software in order to run it on this laptop; moreover I am unable to get to the windows update page to try to update the computer... the owner of this laptop said they received an update from windows about a month ago.

When I click on the windows update from my programs files, I get directed to google search instead. :0( Before running the avast(avg was installed before but stopped responding) I would get directed to a depression website when trying to type in microsoft.com

This question is not for those that have Windows Updates set to Automatically download and install...

When you are looking at a long list of Important Updates (this coming Tuesday clearly in mind) there are usually different types of update: Critical, Important, Moderate. There are also sub-program updates: IE, .NET, etc.
But also consider when you first install the OS, when there are 20 or 30 updates to catch up on.

Do you:
Install all the updates at once.
Install them in batches according to type.
Install them in batches according to date.
Install them in batches x at a time.
Install them one at a time.
Other.

A:How do you (manually) install Windows Updates?

i'm lazy, i generally do it all in one go. i suppose that's what the auto option would do.

seems to work ok, just a bit slow - i simply leave the computer downloading and installing and keep checking progresss every now and then.

Ok, My computer for the moment will not start up
Vista x64
After reading others reports similar to mine, I am fairly confident it is because of a windows update.

I need to know how to manually remove a windows update.
I need to know if there is a log that will tell me which windows update was the latest.

I can modify the computers registry and change files as I please.

There is a little-known way to block W10 Updates after they are downloaded, but before they are installed.

Windows Updates are downloaded. To be installed the user must reboot the system.

So you have the run wushowhide BEFORE your reboot your system to block those pesky cumulative updates that cannot be uninstalled using Windows Update or wusa.exe (command line Windows Update utility) or Safe Mode.

Use the wushowhide utility from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

It might not block the installation of drivers, but you can always use it uninstall forced driver updates.

I used it to block the installation of KB3149135 cumulative update after a clean Windows install.

1. I've been having problems with Windows Update for a while. I've spent hours going through forums attempting to solve my problem, but no luck. Whenever I reboot my computer, a Windows Update balloon pops up and says "Windows cannot install updates". When I try to search for updates, I get error 80080005: Windows encountered an unknown error. It may have something to do with the Background Intelligence Transfer Service...but when I try to Start the service (set on Automatic Delayed) it gives me error 87: parameters are incorrect. I've also had update problems with Windows Defender, but somehow yesterday I was able to manually install definition updates from the Microsoft website. 2. iTunes. I can't install updates to iTunes software. It always gets near the end, then says an error occurred. It attempts to install again, with the same result. The Apple forums say that the solution should be to download "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update"... but that won't install either - I get this: "An error occurred during the instaallation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT, version = "8.0.50727.4053", type = "win32", publicKeyToken = "1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorArchitecture = "x86". Running XP with SP3. OK until recently. When I go to MS Download and click on a download, I get an Unable to Open page. Auto updates enabled, not working. System Restore not working. If I am lucky enough to get to a download page (IE 8 Beta for example) when I click on "Download" I almost immediately get a "Thanks for Downloading"
page, but of course nothing was downloaded. Any ideas?

I have Windows 7 SP1. From 161108 my Windows Update cannot find any new updates, it just searches for days and days. There are many posts on this subject, but I have not been able to solve the problem.
1. Is there a simple way to download and install updates manually (not using Windows Update)?
2. Would it be a very bad idea to stop updating Windows 7 from now on?

Best regards

A:Downloading Windows Updates manually or stop updating

Hi:

Question #2:
Yes, it would be a VERY BAD idea to stop taking at least critical and important security updates from now on. MS now issues them all together in a monthly "roll-up", rather than individual updates. But there is a way to take only the "security" patches, instead of the combined security+performance patches.
Let's get your WU working first...

Question #1:
If WU is stuck on "checking for updates", you need to temporarily shut down that process/service in order to manually install the 2 most important patches that should fix it (3020369 and 3172605).

Let's try this:
IF NOT ALREADY DONE: Download and save, but do not run yet, the standalone installers for KB3020369 and KB3172605 for your architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).
Disconnect from the internet.
Disable the Windows Update service in both the applet itself ("never check for updates") AND from services.msc (change it to "manual" and STOP the service, then click "OK").
REBOOT
Run 3020369 and reboot.
Run 3172605 and reboot.
Go into services.msc and change WU back to "Automatic-delayed start" and start the service.
Reconnect to internet.
Change WU to "notify me, but let me choose".
Run a manual check for updates.
The concept is that you are going to install them from the standalone installers that you have downloaded locally to your computer, NOT via Windows Update.
So, if Windows Update is partially or fully enabled when yo... Read more

Hi i just bought a lenovo thinkpad t430 (this week) that came already with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit already installed and i'm having issues installing updates.

all the automatic updates would install but on reboot the install would fail (even with antivirus disabled and on safemode) reverting back to original settings.

i then went to do manual downloads and updates from the microsoft page. i managed to successfully install all of the "security update for windows" but all of the "update for windows 7 for x64 based systems" are the ones im having trouble with along with a few others.

on the manual download page for the KB2647753, KB2522422, etc (there are 10 of them total) i run into the validation required when i try to download. the actual download link for the windows activation tool (genuinecheck.exe) is "no longer supported. please download the newest version and ensure that your system clock is accurate".

i then went and manually downloaded MGAdiag.exe to run a manual diagnostic and this is what i get.
