Q: Vista Control Panel Opens then immediately closes

Like the title states, for some reason , whenever i open my control panel it shows the outer window then immediately closes, i can make admin decisions if they pop up , but whenever i need an uninstall or install its not letting me either... might be related to the fault control panel.. idk what it could be, can somebody help me out?

if so either tell me your aim, or we can just talk through the forums, whichever....

thanks a bunch

I have a XP Home machine that whenever I startup IE 7.0, it closes right away (within a few seconds). It looks like it will start
loading the page, then just closes. Also in my Control Panel, there is a icon for Internet Options (without the "Internet Options" text
lable), but I cannot click or do anything with it. I also can not right click on the IE icon and get to the properties. I have run Spybot
to no avail. I tried re-installing IE 7.0 (downloaded from another machine). It went through the whole install and said it installed
haven't installed them yet and that is where I sit. IE still does the same thing currently. I did notice in the hosts file there is a entry
of "216.203.102.48 SC00102". I'm not sure what that is, maybe dealing with my wireless connection? Before I reinstalled IE, I took
it out, restarted and it didn't make a difference. One thing (before I re-installed IE) I did was to put "c:\windows\ie7\intcpl.cpl" into
"c:\windows\system32\intcpl.cpl" and that got my Internet Options back (their gone again now), but it didn't fix the closing out issue.
Some things I have yet to try that I plan on doing after researching on the web:

- Making sure that Windows Firewall and SecureIT Firewall are both not running
- Run HijackThis and ... Read more

My guess would be that your system is infected...and I'm no expert.I suggest that you post at BleepingComputer.com - Am I infected What do I do - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/ If it turns out that you are not infected...that would be the time to pursue your system issues, IMO.Louis

A:XP SP3 - IE7 opens and closes immediately

What is the app that you are trying to run? Is there not an update that will work with IE8, or at least a bug fix?

When was the last time this program was working properly?

I was trying to install updates on our desktop last night and had to roll back because the XP3 update could not install. Now IE does not work. I try to install IE8 through automatic updates and it cannot finish the installation. Also when I first logon to my machine, I get the messages cannot find and could not run or load C:\windows\inet2003\winlogon.exe.

A:IE opens then immediately closes

Its wise to make sure when you are doing updates and Service Packs to make sure the system is 100% malware free. With that said, why wold the SP3 not install? Did you recieve an error and if so what was the EXACT error message?

I am unable to access IE (Win XP home edition)
The IE white screen opens and then closes after a few seconds. I have tried to do a system restore - and I can't even get that to open.

I have attached the output from Hijackthis. When I attempted to run the dss tool, it was unable to complete. I tried several times and recieved a Windows error - "dss.exee has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Thanks

Hi All,

Internet Explorer (7 and 8) will open and close immediately under Vista Home Premium. I have tried the following:

1) Run IE in no adds-on mode. Does the same thing.

2) Reset all settings under the Internet Options Panel---when it gets to the third part 'Applying Default Settings' it fails.

3) Run Malware Malabytes in Safe Mode---nothing detected.

4) Install IE8 (wasn't working back when it was IE7), still no luck. Uninstalled back to IE 7, no working, and then back to IE8.

So, any ideas? I normally use Firefox and Opera, but there is one specific work-related website that requires some ASP scripting that neither Firefox or Opera can handle!

Thanks!

IE 11 opens and then closes immediately. The only way to open IE 11 is to right click on IE shortcut, select properties, then set to open minimized. Then click IE 11 on toolbar, and it opens. Setting IE 11 to Normal or Maximized causes IE 11 to open then immediately close. I have removed then re-installed IE 11, ran malewarebytes and ccleaner but IE 11 still has the same problem. I turned off GP rendering. I am out of ideas, does anyone have any other methods to try?

Run CCleaner-Slim or CCleaner-Portable & remove everything it finds, then try IE11 again. If that doesn't do it, go to Internet Options > Advanced tab, then click the reset button located near the bottom.https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/b...

You can try to run the following command to see if any DLL files are missing/damaged.

sfc /scannow

Try also the install folder of the app you use with IE7, if there is a DLL called PSAPI.dll
if there is delete it or rename the file.

Well...the only question I have...is do you have a boxmaker (Dell, HP, etc.) system?

If so, you should have read their documentation/suggestions before ever installing SP3.

Hello,

Boot into Safe Mode and see if you can uninstall the program then try the reinstall.

If still does not work try creating a new user profile. Create a new browser user profile - Google Chrome Help

If still having issue make sure that your antivirus is up to date and perform a scan on the PC.

See the thread below and try the recommended fix. Hopefully this helps

Thought this would be a good place to ask this...if not, feel free to point me in the right direction.

I've had this problem ever since the first betas, thinking that it would eventually work or "be fixed"--but even the release candidate and now the final has the same issue.

When I install IE9, when I go to open up the browser (32 or 64), it opens for a split second and then immediately closes. Every single time. I've never seen IE9 open on this machine.

One of my thoughts on why would be that I have two hard drives in this machine--a 60GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I manually edited the registry entry for default install location / program files location to the E: drive, or 1TB drive, so I don't mistakenly install programs onto the SSD and clog up its limited space. For 95% of programs this has worked out just fine, including Microsoft's own Security Essentials (even though I'd love to have the option to put it on the SSD, but there's no options on where to install it).

Anyone else run into a problem like this? Is there a better solution than reverting that program files change? Now that I've had Windows running for a while I imagine changing that record will cause some...not so nice issues.

EDIT: And I just checked--IE9 is indeed installing to Program Files on the E:\ drive.

A:IE9 opens for a split second, then immediately closes.

For IE crashing, you probably want to try starting it from the command line first to see if it works this way - start > run > iexplore -extoff. If so, you have an add-on causing an issue, and can disable them via autoruns.

Hi All

I've got to the slitting wrists stage of this problem. I hope someone can help...

I've been getting the blue screen of death recently and upon checking my computer's error logs I found that it was a problem with my Radeon graphics card. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Radeon software but the audio went. I couldn't find the audio driver (long story) so I did a system restore which worked - everything was back to normal. Or so I thought.

Next morning I tried to open IE but upon opening it closed immediately. I've done a bit of research (ON THE INTERNET AT WORK!) and have done a HijackThis log.

It may be a coincidnece but the other day my screensaver changed - it's now a black screen which says Oxigenscr V5.00.0000. Maybe this is a virus. Thank you for your help in advance

Hi,

I noticed lately that sometimes when I do a google search in Firefox and click on a link I'll be brought to some other ad/search site. It could be going on for awhile; I don't normally use Firefox and only noticed this problem when I opened it a few days ago. I don't have this problem in Chrome. Anyway, when I put two and two together I went to open Microsoft Security Essentials to run a scan only to find that as soon as I open it, it closes. Usually within a second. I ran a complete scan with Malware Bytes that did not find anything malicious but quarantined a few files which I deleted.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I'm having a problem with my computer that I just can't seem to solve. I first noticed while online I am having trouble typing in the address bar. When I attempt to type the text will highlight or delete itself. For example it I type www. It will highlight or just show ".w". Also the screen has a steady flicker. Typing in search boxes for yahoo or Google seems to work fine. I have also noticed that when I click on the start menu that it will not stay on. I comes on for a split second then closes. It gives me almost no time to open programs or anything else. Most drop down menus do the same. Another thing, anything highlighted in any program has a steady flicker.
What I done so far is to scan for a virus or malware with Spybot, Malwarebyte, Ad-Aware and AVG and so far everything is fine. . I'm running Win XP SP3 Intel CPU, 1.60 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM.
Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.. Thanks

I have tried the troubleshooters, reset the Store cache and uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive but the problem continues.
Another issue that is probably related is, although the Onedrive app is installed on the Start screen, it does not show on "My Apps" at "My Account" at the Windows Store.
Like I said above, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the OneDrive app several times but the situation remains.

Is there any way I can see a list of opened applications or windows and in what orders and what times? Thanks

Looks like it may start to send/receive and then closes immediately. It has been prompting me every time I open it with this "archive folder" checking for a while, but the program has always run. This started first thing Friday after the send/receive. The archive.pst file is: 1,064,704KB and the Outlook.pst file is: 637,072KB. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this. I'd like to keep my contacts and files if possible. Thanks!

In my Access database (Office 2003, Windows XP) each record is associated with a file somewhere on disk. Some of these files are MS Word files and some are PDF files.

In the DB, the user has the option to click on a button to view the document.

When the user clicks on "View Document, I use the
Application.FollowHyperlink method to open the document file.

When I run the software on this computer, the Word document open correctly but when I try to FollowHyperlink to a PDF file, the document opens momentarily, then closes almost immediately. The document is in view for less than a second.

There is nothing wrong with the PDF document itself. When opened in the normal way on this computer, Acrobat opens it properly with no warnings or dialogues.

I am unsure whether the problem has anything to do with Acrobat versus Reader but it is the single difference that I can identify immediately. I will soon try this on other machines that also have Acrobat installed to see if the problem is the same on those machines.

Any ideas?

I was able to install MBAM by changing the name and file extension to test.bat - the program would not run. I then was able to get the program to run by changing mbam.exe to test.bat. MBAM found the following: Trojan.DNSChanger, Trojan.FakeAlert, Trojan.Agent

MBAM removed them, MBAM returns clean results. Internet explorer still opens and closes immediately. All my software that requires a license opens and now claims it could not contact the license server or license expired.

Hi all,
I am new to Vista and have had it on my new Toshiba Satellite L300D for only a couple months. There are SOME programs in my Control Panel such as Networking, Performance and System that, when I click on them, pop open for a split second and then close. Anyone seen this before? I have done a system restore with no change. I have run AVG scans, Windows Defender and nothing is found.

One day also, my Gadgets disappeard (not the sidebar, just the Gadgets) and the option to Restore Gadgets is grayed out. In general it is acting wonky. Any help? Thanks.

Seriously. What?

I click Control Panel. The window then opens and closes really fast! I opened/closed other folders and programs w/o this problem. It's just the CP. Restarting doesn't help.

I haven't downloaded anything suspicious lately either. This PC was just built like less than a month ago and the install was a fresh one.

Thanks for any help.

Edit: btw the same thing happens when I search for control panel in the windows menu startup thing (... what is it called?) and click the link that shows up.

You could have a malware problem. I sugest running a complete virus, spyware/adware scan and download HighjackThis and post your log in the security section for someone to analyize. If you need a good spy/adware program I suggest Windows Defender. It is pre installed on Vista you may have to turn it on. It will let you know when you click on it in the start menu. I hope this helps you. Please let us know how you are making out with this.

Just noticed this problem yesterday when attempting to play my flight simulator after work. The controls didn't work at all on my Saitek X45 joystick. The LED status lights were OK, so I exited the program and opened the control panel to access the game controllers. After numerous double clicks, it didn't open. I went into device manager, and under "sound, video, and game controllers" my joystick was not listed; however, it was under the HID section, and disappeared/reappeared when I unplugged the joystick and plugged it back in.

I found several threads on different forums so I tried a few options, including removing all the HID devices and USB devices from device manager (had to use VNC from my iphone to finish all of them when I removed the mouse/keyboard from the list, lol). I then rebooted and let windows "re-find" all of the devices, but "game controllers" still wouldn't open. The Event Viewer shows no errors and I am not getting any popup errors when trying to open it. As a last resort, I tried a registry cleaner this morning, but I am now lost because I have pretty much exhausted all options that I know of.

I did try creating another windows user account and tried to access game controllers from that account. It, too, did not work. The only time I could get it to open was when I booted into safe mode. It came right up.

Ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Game Controllers (Joy.CPL) in Control Panel no longer opens

I'm having the same problem as someone else described here:

except I have no problem closing IE afterwards.
Chrome is the default browser, and I would like for IE to never open for anything.
And IE only pops up when My Computer is closed if My Computer was launched from the Start menu. I.e., <windows key>-E started the file explorer at My Computer (looks the same except has a sidebar) but IE does not pop up when that's closed.

I just finished a full MSE scan but it found no malicious or unwanted software.
IE's possibly related "about:blank" adware infection seems to have been common some years ago but the clean scan should rule that out, right?

It's again on a friend's computer but if anybody else is interested in getting to the bottom of this, I have his laptop for a bit and can reproduce it at will.

Thanks

Sometime recently, perhaps at the latest Windows Update on Vista, my nVidia Control Panel stopped working in Vista 64. I am using nVidia driver 185.85, the latest non-beta version available. I am using nVidia system tools 6.05, the latest set available. I have cleaned out my drivers with Driver Sweeper, and reloaded them with no change. I have loaded the drivers with all virus software shut down, with all unnecessary apps shut down. When I try to start up the nVidia control panel, whether in the Windows Control Panel or other shortcut, Vista tells me that "nVidia Control Panel has stopped working". I am getting the impression that the nVidia drivers are not running, since when I add them they are not defaulting to max resolution like they normally do. The system seems to be running on some default video driver instead. CPU, GPU, MCP temperatures are nominal, no indications of problems there. This problem has plagued my computer for weeks and the Internet had very little advice on how to fix it. So i'm writing here in case anyone might know the answer to the worst problem I ever faced in Vista. I'm rooting for you guys! My Vista Problem: My Control Panel keeps closing. I try to open the Control Panel, and it keeps instantly disappearing! Also, my printer won't work because of this problem. So I went searching for a solution. To my surprise, there were many others who encountered the same problem. There was a "temporary fix" to the problem. Basically, if you can't use your control panel, just launch services.msc from a run command and restart the Software Licensing Service (SLsvc). This fixes the problem "temporarily", but I have to do this "temp fix" every time I restart my computer. Needless to say, I wasn't too happy and it seems no one knows the answer to this crazy problem some of us are having on all sorts of different computer configurations. So everyday for the past couple weeks I'm going through the stupid temp fix and trying everything I possibly can to fix this awful problem. The latest one: vista control panel, it was created by a genius. i think they hired a genious to make it difficult and awkward to use. its amazing: u want to do something, u know its there, its actually sitting right in front of u: but u just DONT see it!! ok: well this is my expereince anyway. it's sooo damn unintuitive to use. i'm sure its a better system than the old: but the new one involves more clicks and its never obvious where things are. tip, when searching for something, don't look in the place where u think it will be! (to be fair, i think they introduced the newer crappier control panel in xp first, but in vista, they improved on the unintuitiveness.) (and heck, before u say it, yes maybe i should jus stop complaining and use the classic view.) OM A:Vista Control Panel was created by a genius. There are two kinds of Vista Control Panel users: Those who have used CP before. Those who haven't. For experienced users, it's no big deal-switch to Classic, as you said, or poke around a bit until you find what you want. In my experience, most people have never even looked at CP, so it makes no difference at all what it looks like. OTOH, I agree that the changes are unnecessary and confusing, just like most of the Vista GUI changes. I suspect this is the result of MS getting to big for its britches and forgetting that usability is important. 3 more replies Answer Match 64.26% I have recently installed a couple of new things-- The GIMP, Moon-something--which is like antivirus program that was free--and a very popular game, none of which should be causing this problem. I cannot open Control Panel. It just flashes and disappears, as well as games, for instance. I received a few messages saying changes made to Windows or something, and there may be incompatible software, but was unable to figure out what to do. I've tried running scan in run (SFC /SCANNOW) and there are no detections. Tried installing Windows updates, and can't remember exactly why I couldn't do that, but I couldn't for whatever reason, I tried, and it started, but didn't work or something, can't recall. Then I tried contacting Windows. Hah, that's a friggin joke. They want 50$ unless I know my product ID, but guess what? Your product ID is in the control panel. They're a bunch of geniuses, right? Anyways, I don't have 50\$ to ask a question, which, frankly, is ridiculous and I wouldn't even if I HAD it. They should be paying me just for having to live with vista. Anyways, the last notice I got said I would no longer be notified of changes, so I'm a little worried my computer is going to be in seriuos trouble. I've never used this forum, and don't really know how to get back here, so if anyone knows what's going on, I'd appreciate it. Or just post a reply and hope I do find it. Thanks.

It may be the PC is infected.
Try a System Restore to a point before you loaded those applications.

Hello all,

I apologize if this thread covers previously discussed support. The reason I am posting is to see what more I need to do in order to get Control Panel working again.

A few days after installing Vista SP2, Control Panel (as well as other programs reached via the "Start" menu) was no longer responding. At first, it was just Control Panel that would hang up. Shortly thereafter, however, other programs located under "Start" would do the same (Steam, CCleaner, PowerDefragmenter, etc.).

After consulting a friend, he suggested running AntiVir. Upon doing so in Windows Safe Mode, it found a virus in one of the Registry files (I should have written down which one, but did not). I deleted it, and AntiVir requested a restart. After restarting in Normal mode, all I got was a black screen (although Ctrl+Alt+Del did bring up the Vista task manager option).

Stumped, I ran Windows Defender in Safe Mode. It found nothing. Next, I ran "Start>Run>type 'sfc /scannow'". As far as I can tell, it found nothing out of place (it did not bring up a results screen). Finally, I did a search for "drweb" and it was found. Still in Safe Mode, I deleted all "drweb" files. Hoping this had solved my problems, I ran CCleaner and then rebooted in Normal Mode. It did not, however, as Vista goes to a black screen right after password login.

Can anyone help?

This is primarily a informational post for those interested.. I found this post http://forums.techguy.org/malware-r...regedit-msconfig-closes-immediately-upon.html and wanted to reply but it was closed.

I just copied my drive over using Western Digital's Data Lifeguard utility. Upon rebooting (and making sure the new drive was selected in the bios to boot from) I encountered 2 problems..

1: the boot menu (which had not previously been enabled) now showed two entries for "Default system", both which worked, but was annoying to me..
2: msconfig would not work for me to check the startup and boot.ini.

I ran through a lot of steps trying to get msconfig to work again.. copied the file to a different location, rename it as a different filename, check for virus/malware, even copied it from my laptop, and checking the registry entries.. Nothing would let this program run!
As far as antivirus programs, I run Avast! .. I was POSITIVE I had no virus malware, etc. Even still, I ran a boot time virus sweep. NOTHING found. Even ran HijackThis.. again nothing. After MUCH searching on Google and even these forums, I simply resigned myself that I was going to need to do a repair install (which I hate doing). I decided to check one last thing first.. manual edit of the boot.ini.

When I opened it up and compared to my laptop running the same version of the OS (Win XP Pro sp3) I noticed it was missing an entry .. the information under [operating systems] (second entry) was b... Read more

yes, here an idea
though, you have remove the application from your computer, you system have kept some files from old installation.
not to worry, this can be fixed by purging all MS Office files from your system.

click Start, Run & type regedit & OK. browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office. right click that folder & choose the delete option.
go to C drive, Programs Files, & delete Microsoft Office from there. (don't worry if you receive an error of some files can not be removed, will just do it after reboot)
if the last step gave u an error, please reboot & delete after reboot (don't open any applications or browsers)
reboot
click Start, Run & type %TEMP%, the click OK. (delete all items within the folder that opens)
reboot
reinstall MS Office 2000
this should fix your issue. please let me know how it goes

Hijackthis runs for about two seconds and then closes. Though, I was able to get a log by clicking the button quickly enough. And then I realized that the saved log also closed within a few seconds also. So I tried changing the name of log, and then it worked. But here's the log I managed to get:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 6:20:15 PM, on 7/17/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\TGTSoft\StyleXP\StyleXPService.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exeC:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Mouse\point32.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exeC:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exeC:\Program Files\PowerISO\PWRISOVM.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exeC:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\... I am having the same problem. I have tired resetting, I ran sfc and no issues were found. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling. Also tried the tweaks from majorgeeks.com. I have tried IE9 via update and IE11 via update and also from downloading. Also I just finished a clean install on a tower and have the exact same issues there. I am desperate here. I need IE to complete MOAC labs. Both machines are running Win7 64bit. Laptop has Home Premium and the new tower is Pro. Both machines have the OS on one partition with registry point program files to a second partition.

Do you have any other issues, where did you get the copies of windows that are installed, have you tried running a startup repair. What about other browsers do they have the same problem.

Internet Explorer closes immediately after loading on my ThinkPad. I have run a virus scan using my installed Internet Security scanner (Comodo), but it has found no threats. Following the instructions for this forum, I have run dds.scr and gmer.exe. DDS.txt is pasted below; ark.txt and atttach.txt are zipped together in the attachment. Any guidance would be most helpful.

I've tried this twice now (on the same machine) and each time Control Panel won't work; it doesn't open. If I change the start menu to show links to Control Panel applets only some of them work; User Accounts, Display, Power Settings, Windows Update and others just do nothing. This means I can't adjust my display properties to get the correct alignment of my dual monitors, among other things, so I've given up on it meantime.

Has anyone else had this problem, or any suggestions on how to overcome it?

A:Vista Ultimate upgrade to RC - missing control panel

Ok, did you upgrade as in just standard install or a clean install that reformated your hard drive?
If you just didn't do a clean install, do it. If you just upgrade over vista or xp, it causes a heck load of problems.
If you did do a clean install, then maybe reinstall it if all options run out.

If non of this works, see if there's any more information and i'll see what i can do.
Good luck

Hi everyone,

I have the following problem: My Control Panel keeps using the Classic View instead of the Control Panel Home view. I checked the tutorial about this subject:
HTML Code:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/158610-control-panel-force-home-classic-view.html
I tried the second way (Through the Registry: Through a Download), as i have Vista Home Premium, but when I right-click the Restore_Default_CP_View, it doesn't show Merge (actually, I'm not sure, because I don't have an enlish version...). The other way (The Manual Way) doesn't work either, because I don't have the file HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. When I click Policies, it only shows one more folder, called system. The Explorer file doesn't seem to be there. I tried running as administrator, but that didn't work either.

Thanks a lot!

Gijs

A:Vista forces Control Panel Home view

Hello Gijs, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Using the same tutorial link above, double check at this registry location below also to see if you have the ForceClassicControlPanel entry there. If you do, then delete it, restart the computer, set the Control Panel to how you like it and close it so it will be remembered for the next time you open it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Hope this helps,
Shawn
