HELP! Page Stops Responding, Freezes, and Very Slow :(

Q: HELP! Page Stops Responding, Freezes, and Very Slow :(

Please help, I've tried everything I know I could do but the problem seems to just get worse. Pages stop responding or stop working, everything freezes up all the time where I have to restart by pressing the power button, the PC is so slow. I'm so aggravated with this laptop, I just want to throw it across the room. Hope someone out there can help this poor gal. I even had trouble with HiJackThis, which made me run as administrator which wasn't as bad as GMER, which I couldn't for the life of me get this program to run without Windows popping up in the middle stating something made it stop working three times, also on the second try the screen flashed blue with some writing but it was so fast like not even a second and then it just shut my PC down. So all I could get is a like two things on the GMER. Could NOT run it all the way.

Hope you can help! I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, 4GB, 64bit, Intel i5, NVIDIA, Kaspersky Internet Security 15.0.2.
I primarily use IE11, but switch to Mozilla Firefox 43.0.2 when IE stops responding. My primary email is AOL which I access via web, not software. Computer often slow and hangs.

The main issue is IE11 "stops responding" several times a day. I've run the latest version of Malwarebytes (subscription), Glary Utilities Pro, Kaspersky IS, CCleaner, and Disk Cleanup. I delete browing history daily. No virus or malware shows up after scans. Recently ran a full scan on Kaspersky overnight+ and still, no viruses detected. I'm not sure what the issue is and would gladly go back to IE9 or 10 if IE11 is the issue, but I need to be sure.

Whatever guidance you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Computer stops responding and Freezes

Try running ADWCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/dl/125/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/dl/131/

After running both of them restart into safe mode again and try running rkill:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/

Then try malwarebytes chameleon:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/chameleon/

Another thing to try would be opening a cmd prompt and typing:
chkdsk /r /f

Then restart

Hello everyone! Please let me tell you about the problem I've been having with my new PC.

Most tasks / applications eventually begin to ?hang? or not respond. This usually begins happening less than ten minutes after booting. Sometimes, if I wait for awhile, the system will ?catch up? when running lite-weight tasks such as Google Chrome, but for a more resource-intensive task such as running a Windows backup session, the task will hang indefinitely. Ctrl + Alt + Delete will usually not bring up the option to enable Task Manager, but if it does, Task Manager will generally not work to end the unstable processes.

It seems like this system is too powerful for these kind of problems, but I don?t know what to do to fix it. This is the first time that I?ve assembled a PC by myself, and I?m a novice at best when it comes to tuning / tweaking a Windows OS, adjusting BIOS settings, and general problem-solving on a powerful PC system. I need detailed help to isolate and diagnose the problem.

Hello Techspot,

thanks for taking your time to read this.

Let me describe my problem.

2 Days ago I started my pc and it didnt boot - no error beep - just no response. After some tinkering (checking if all cards and cables are correctly plugged) the system booted again but as soon as the windows loading screen appeared, I heared a clicking sound (very sure it was hdd) and the system just rebooted - next try same result.

I decided to plug in my boot usb-stick and execute a fixmbr - after a reboot the system started xp.

I ran HDtune and speedfan to read the smart data and it reported 2 pending sectors, after that I rebooted to run the samsung tool "ESTool" and ran a diag. it reported the 2 pending sectors as well and suggested "Erase Data".

Before running a low-level format I wanted to find out more and while running a browser or accessing certain files of the hdd I experienced the freezes. They last for 5-60 seconds and even freeze the cursor for that time, then cursor is movable for a second, then its freezed again - sometimes it will stop after some minutes, twice I had to reboot windows.

I decided to run the low level format, which reported no errors same with the full diagnotic scan.
I reinstalled windows xp sp2, installed the most essential drivers and updated to sp3 and even hdtune and speedfan tests reported no more errors.

When I started Internet explorer to access the windows update site the freezes occured again and it seems the fo... Read more

For whatever reason Explorer has recently started locking files that aren't being used such that they can't be moved, renamed, or deleted. It almost seems at random.

So I got a program called "unlocker" that breaks the lockouts on files so they can me moved again.

The problem with unlocker is that if you do this to more then one or two files per boot, then explorer starts getting really flaky.

For example it could take 5 minutes to open one folder.

I can fix the problem by force quiting explorer and then reopening it with the task manager.

But I really don't want to do that 15 times a day.

Another way I can fix it is by right clicking on the start menu and then opening perhaps 5 to 10 "explore all users"... I have to do it quickly... one right after the other.

That will clear the problem for about 5 minutes and explorer will behave itself.

Then it will start doing it again.

Really, what I'd like is for explorer to stop arbitarly locking files or for it to stop cheesing out on me when unlocker breaks the lockouts.

Unlocker makes it very clear which program is locking a file. If I have word open and try to move the word document it says that Word has locked the file. If I'm copying some big files and try to delete them it says explorer has them. That's fine.

But it's saying things are locked that haven't been touched by anything in weeks... and it's always explorer locking th... Read more

It seems to me after looking over your system stats that the culprit is RAM from 1st guess. . I think this is probably Ram but I am not sure. When you put the computer under a heavy work load it starts to freeze up? Does this happen only in the Vista partition or in XP and Linux to?

I bought this laptop less than six months ago, and it's already starting to deteriorate. My Last HP laptop also started to become, essentially useless after about six months. I can see a repeating pattern here, so it's unlikely I'll continue purchasing HP products, but in the meantime, I'd like to fix this issue, so that I can still use this laptop in the interim of finding a much better company, with higher standards for product functionality. My touchpad regularly stops functioning; sometimes, I have to have my hands placed a certain way on the laptop for the touchpand to work. Other times, it will lag, or I'll have to wait or even restart for it to become functional again. Sometimes, the cursor will jump to an entirely new location while using the touchpad. Basically, it rarely works the way it is intended to be used. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled drivers, I have performed recommended updates, and bla bla bla. I'd like a legitimate solution, asap.

I have an older laptop with an Intel processor and 4GB of RAM running Vista.

I am having issues which seem mainly to be in Internet Explorer and to a lesser extent in other programs as well. There are times when going into Windwos Mail that I get a message at the top of the page that says not responding and then 15-20 seconds later it starts working again. I select an e-mail and again get a not responding message and it takes several seconds to display the e-mail. That also happens in Excel and Word but not as frequently. Almost every page I open in IE I either get a blank page with a message at the bottom that says yahoo.com is not responding or techsupportforum.com is not responding etc and on the right side it says recover. If you leave it the page will usually or at least often display but it takes way longer to load that what it should. Other times the page will seemingly load but as soon as you try to move the scroll bar down on the right you get the same message and the little circle on the tab keeps going around and around. Sometimes they complete loading and work after quite some time and other times you get a message that a long script is causing it to run slow or something to that affect and you are given the option to stop the script. I should have written down these messages as the above is not verbatim. I did run Microsoft's Fix It and it did seem to improve it to some degree but it is still not running the way it should or did. The other sign that something ... Read more

Weird problem, iniatially with IE6.

Certain websites are not downloading. Title bar completes, so I know there is connectivity, screen stays blank, click view source, you can see that most of the web page has downloaded, but is never displayed. Installed Firefox and is doing much the same thing though eventually the page is displayed. Example sites affected are www.play.com and en.wikipedia.org

Ran a Hijackthis and did not spot anything unusual. If it helps, I will get the log, left on the users machine to which I currently don't have access

Hi
I wondered whether anyone could help. My computer has been progressively getting slower and slower and the c drive seems to be so full even though I have defraged and cleaned the disk. Windows 7 also seems to be playing up. I have run boot scan avast and anti malware and anti spyware boot programs and it still does not seem to help. Below are my logs. I have also attached two more logs because the program told me to put them in a zip file.
Many Thanks

So i have this toshiba satelite laptop for exactly 2 years this week. 10 days ago, i tried to install microsoft net framework 4. i installed it and got these update to go along with it. I updated my comp and it asked me to restart so i did. Next day, i got the same update and it was taking forever to install while i was shutting down my computer so i manually powered off because i was going to sleep. Next morning my computer's screen goes blank and i can't even go to boot screen.

So 3 days ago, i took it to a ship after numerous attempt by myself to try and fix it by reading online forums and found a lot of people had this problem. The ITS who fixed my laptop charged me $100 and told me it was due to overheating that caused my motherboard to go haywire. 1st day i got it back, everything was somewhat smooth. Next day i tried to install the MS Net framework 4 again but this time i got the 64 bit installer since i figure it must be the wrong installer i used last time. After i installed the update, my computer starts to become extremely slow and lags whenever i start up. Eventually it leads to freezing of the computer which took hours that leads me to power off manually and restarting. Last night i factory reset my laptop thinking it might fix the whole freezing and the stop responding problem. For the 1st 30 min everything was good and i could multi task with 2 browser and installing multiple things. After that it started to freeze again and i got the BSOD.

Hello! I'm having serious issues with my computer. It takes a long time to load upon starting, takes a long time to get to my destination, when it gets on the page it freezes and a message appears saying, (Not Responding).

A windows message then pops up saying, "You've chosen to end a program that's not responding. If you end now, you'll lose all unsaved work." I can either chose "End now or cancel". If I cancel, the page doesn't unfreeze.

I know it can be either a software conflict or malware, but I don't know which one. I've already recently ran a performance booster on it, and that really didn't do much that I can see. I've defragged too. I ran a registry cleaner on it. I cleared the caches. It hasn't changed a thing.

There's one other user on my computer who's downloaded some various programs. I know he doesn't check on the software before downloading. HELP!!

I was going to choose a free software to tell me if I have software issues or hardware issues, but I don't know which ones are the best and less harmful for my computer. Also, I haven't tried a malware removal either. I'm afraid to download anything and ONLY trust Techspot to tell me which ones to download.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

I recently started getting very annoying problem. Firefox or other program stops responding and alt+ctrl+del stops working at the same time so I have to reboot. It happens quite often.

What I did already:
*Maybe virus? Full boot time system scan with Avast anti-virus. Nothing found.
*Oh well reinstall windows again... Yes, I did that too. Still same problem BUT ONLY after small break like two days or so.
And most confusing thing is that full screen programs like games do not seem to stop responding. Still, they BSOD like after few hours, but I do not think it is related. Like heavy load or something.

My system details hopefully in my forum profile, at least filled them recently.

So any other ideas how I can fix that?

I have been dealing with this issue for months and had to put it aside because of the flu and then some urgent hardware problems.

I'm running Outlook 2010 with about 5 separate POP 3 accounts. I archive regularly and compact after archiving. After a lot of trouble cloning a new C drive to an SSD, Outlook, along with a lot of other software, began acting strangely. Everything has pretty much been resolved except for the Outlook problem.

For no reason I can isolate, Outlook will suddenly close, giving the message that it had to close and it will now try to retrieve my data. It does so, unless I was in the middle of composing an email - that will be gone! Sometimes, instead of closing, it freezes and says application not responding.

I checked the disk for errors using scan now and it's fine. I've run memtest and it's fine. I've run in safe mode and it just shut down with no comments. In working my way through suggestions on this board, I just ran Sysinternals Process Explorer until the error occurred and went back to normal. In looking at Process Explorer, I'm afraid the actual data is overwhelming to me. However, I'll attach everything I have.

Event Viewer shows Error 1000. General:

I have just gotten my hands on a computer previosly belonging to a friend of mine. (about 2 years old)
When reinstalling Windows XP Home on it, using the disc that comes with, a problem has come up.

After a while the entire thing will stop responding to input and seems to semi-freeze. a typical example follows:

While installing a game I noticed that after a while the blue progress bar had stopped moving. When moving the mouse, the pointer on the screen did not move, trying to use the keyboard gave no response, even to where hitting the num lock key would not even toggle the light for it on and off on the keyboard itself.
However an animation on the installscreen was still moving, and the system clock down in the tray, was still running and counting off minutes as normal.

This is a clean install, and I have tried installing twice, both times with the same result.

Windows is patched up to current using Windows update, including SP3

The computer setup is as follows:

Hi mate, maybe it is PSU bottleneck... Because PSU is two years old, you should clean it from dust inside with vacuum cleaner or with compressed air... Or to be sure, better to lend PSU with at least 500W and try to see what will happened...
You have a lot power consumers...
Also clean entire case from inside from dust [that includes to replace paste between processor and cooler on processor], and take out graphic card and clean PCI-E slot with brush and put it back [be sure you insert it right]...
Hope this will help you mate...

Acer Aspire 5552

64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium

AMD Athlon II P340 Dual-Core Processor 2.20 GHz

4.00 GB RAM

My PC stops responding too often than it should. The Opera browser does the same. When it stops responding, I can still use the mouse. It will then start working again after about a minute or so, but the time varies. The intervals at which it happens greatly varies as well. Anything that I input while it is unresponsive will occur all at once when it unfreezes. There's no way I'm maxing my specs out simply browsing the web and watching movies. I have Avast! constantly running in the background and do regular virus scans. Please help! I bought this laptop a few months back, and it should not be freezing already.

Thanks.

There could be many problems causing that message. Do you have the most recent versions of Adobe Flash, Java, Internet Explorer and Firefox? How about all of the most recent updates for Windows 7 (including SP1)?

Why do so many programs just stop working, stop responding for no apparent reason??? This includes IE9, e-mail service, new printer/scanner installation, etc, etc, etc. Sometimes even writing a letter or "Save as" just stops responding. How can this be??? Windows says "we're looking for a solution", but nothing ever shows up. Is there no diagnostic that can identify the failure? Is it memory, conflict, what can be causing these annoying interruptions??? Mostly rebooting the system will clear things up.

My setup: Windows 8 PRO, CPU Intel i7 3.40 GHz 64 bit, 16 GB RAM, INTEL SSDSC solid state hard drive 223 GB (about one quarter full). I did not have these problems with Windows 7, or the Windows 8 pre releases.

A:stops responding

I like to start with simple things that might work: system restore especially if you know about when your problem began, sfc /scannow (may need to run multiple times--say 3), automatic repair (may need to run multiple times--say 3).

No luck with those attempts. Try creating a new user account of the same type you typically login with? Copy everything you will need to the new account if it works. Then, delete the old account. You can go back to the original user name similarly. Before you do so, make sure that deleting the original user account also deleted that users folder in C: > Users. Sometimes this folder does not get deleted. If not, then going back to the original user name creates a minor only superficial "problem." To delete the folder, you may have to take ownership. I would not go back the the original user name using any other procedure.

I clean installed win2k pro about a week ago. I was running 98se. For some reason 2k stops responding on me, all the time. Sometimes it is able to recover, and others i have to hit the power button. Sometimes the computer seems not to stop running, but all progs using internet connection no longer respond. If I have files in transfer on ftp, the speed goes to zero. When this happens, the computer seems like it is still working somewhat, but if I try and shutdown or reboot, nothing happens. I try the 3 finger salute, but that never works either. I'm am thinking that maybe some of my drivers are not working together well, but who knows, I am no expert. I am also new to win 2000. Has anyone seen this happen, or know what is going on. Like I said, this is a new and clean install. Thanks, Barret.

Well, It does not look like anyone knows what is going on here. I have had nothing but problems win 2k. Looks like im going back to win98. Then I can run my dual video cards again and be able to print and scan again. That will be nice Thanks, Barret.

Ever since I installed IE7Pro and visit certain web sites like Webshots were I navigate from one picture to another, frequently I'll get a IE7 message saying that IE7 is not responding, it closes IT then restarts it. I tried uninstalling IE7 Pro at one point but still got the error. Any help is appreciated.

I have a few reports that I could upload about my PC if someone can tell me how to do this.

A:IE7 stops responding sometimes

There are a few problems with Interent Explorer 7. It could be anything.. Sometimes it has a conflict with office 2003 and I am not sure about 2007.. But I always say that the problem is very easy to solve..

Hello My Os is Windows Vista Home Premium(32bit) and recently I have been having problems getting to certain sites. I've tried to get onto the Yahoo widgets downloads site http://widgets.yahoo.com/ and IE as soon as I click on the link(I did a google search incase the address was wrong in favourites) stops responding.(It doesn't even load up the page) I have left it for a good five or six minutes to see if it starts responding again but with no luck. I usually have to open up the task manager and end it with that because I can't close it any other way. I know its a problem specifically with this PC because my boyfriend has a laptop with vista and he can get to the site fine and by kids PC has XP with IE7 and I can get to the site fine with that. I can also get to the site fine on this PC with Firefox. Another site I have problems with is Bigfish Games site. When I try to go the community games it loads the page up but gets to a certain point and stops responding. It did used to work fine but I hadn't been to either site in a couple of weeks, so I don't know what causing the problem. I have McAfee's total internet security, spybots and windows defender I have the latest java installed(which is needed for the bigfish games site).

A:Ie Stops Responding

I managed to fix the problem I ran IE with no add-ons and found I could get to all the problem sites. So I went through and enabled them one by one until I found the one that was causing the problems. I found that a java add-onn that was causing a problem so I unistalled java then re-installed it which semms to have solved the problem.
The other add-on was the yahoo installer add-on so I un-installed it and re-installed and now all is working fine

Okay, I'm gonna go REALLY in-depth with the crap going on with my computer.

Okay, I'm a PC gamer. Typical. I downloaded a couple of games, skype, and MBAM (Malware Bytes - Anti Malware) That is my antivirus. Today, I got this ridiculous thing, that I believe to be a virus. I found out my computer was running rather slow, so I open up task manager to see the processes that were open. Turns out, there was this one process that showed up like 30 times. I clicked one, and I ended the process... and all stuff happens from there. My computer freezes, Task manager stops responding, all windows stop responding, my desktop turns slightly whiter (due to stop responding-ness) and I couldn't even turn off my computer. I tried to use system restore to restore my computer to a previous backup, no luck. The process was still there. I scanned with MBAM in safe mode. No luck. I then nearly gave up, then I had one more idea. I thought I could restore my computer to factory settings... turned out the "virus" prevented that from happening too... Can anyone help me?

What new hardware did you get that made you reinstall XP? Was the reinstall successful?

Why do so many programs just stop working, stop responding for no apparent reason??? This includes IE9, e-mail service, etc, etc, etc.

I don't know what the major problems are caused by, but doubt that you should be using IE9 since IE 10 is included with Windows 8.

Here is the situation:

Dual boot Windows XP (drive C: ) Vista Ultimate (Drive d: )

Have a BT Keyboard mouse plugged into USB. External USB Hd and numerous USB thumb drives plugged into a USB hub (all USB 2.0). These all work flawlessly in Windows XP (so do not think it is a hardware issue). In Vista the USB devices simply stop responding (The hard drive light even goes off almost like a power issue). The devices always come back online but then u get the autoinf kicking in etc as well as if you happen to be running a program from the external HD it reports error that it has stopped responding and exits the program.
As I said, there are no issues running from XP. Just happened now with the USb Key (running FF) the external HD was not affected and the Mouse KB not affected. Another time it will be the external HD. No apparent pattern that I can ss.

Have search MS Knowledge base (as best I can it is sometimes hit and miss there) and Googled it. So far no success.

Anyone have any ideas?

A:USB Stops responding

Problem may have been solved. It is a known issue with certain chip sets on motherboards. I have installed the revised inf files for the 945CZ chip set (automatic program from Intel did the trick), and so far so good.

Just goes to show it might be something you do not expect.

I will keep you advised.

BTW this could cause many other issues as well. My advice run some program that does gives an in depth inventory of your PC and if you have a motherboard that has Intel Chip set either go to your MB manufacturer's site or go to intel - they have lots of info on their site.

I have been trying for a week to resolve this problem. Here are some facts on the matter:
Working from a Dell Notebook running XP HOME SP3.
Wiped HD and did a DELL system restore from CD's (5 times now in a week).
Removed a lot of crapware.
Updated from Microsoft Update extensively.
Updated notebook with Dell drivers (and other) updates.
Updated to current Java and other software.
Installed a LOT of personal software .. all proven to be stable from many months of use. No crapware in particular ... all 'good' stuff. Machine is fairly clean from 'junk'.
When I go to a particular website and log in to my account there, IE8 stops responding within a few minutes (or less).
Firefox 3.5 does not stop responding .. no apparent problem with Firefox.
I have used msconfig to NOT load any starup programs but the problem still happens.
Many other members of the website are having similar problems with IE8.
I have uninstalled IE8, which took me back to IE6. Same problem. Installed IE7, same problem. Back to IE8 .. same problem.
Other members say 'no problem w/ firefox'.
IE8 worked fine for months at this website for me .. then .. 'all of a sudden'.
There MIGHT be other websites that cause the problem .. but I have not found one yet.
There are people who still DON'T have a problem with this website and IE8.

Questions:
Could it be the website, or is it IE8 or something else?

Hello, Ok I am having a very frustrating problem. I brought my computer with me to Senegal (I am a Peace Corps volunteer) and now i am having major problems with it. I will be working on my computer when all of the sudden it stops responding. I can move the mouse but none of the programs respond. When I try to control+alt+delete I get a message that says "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog - Failure-Security options" I then have to manually shut down my computer. Lately it has gotten much worse and it will freeze while it has only been running for a few minutes. I also tried to run a Primary Hard Disk Self Test and I got the message "Hard Disk Test Failed Hard Disk 1 full (305). I do not know what this means. My computer works alright in Safe Mode. At first I thought my hard drive might be overheating due to the extreme temperatures we have in Senegal, but wouldn't it also be affect in Safe Mode? I thought maybe there was a virus so I tried to scan with ESET, nothing came up, with AVG it found a few things and quarantined them, and Malwarebytes didn't find anything. However, I have only been able to scan in Safe Mode because my computer freezes in regular mode. Does anyone know what might be happening? I'm very upset because I'm afraid I might have to buy another computer and to get it all the way here is a pain and expensive. If anyone has ANY ideas I would greatly appreciate them. Thank you!!!

Hi Guy,

Now here's the deal, my sister just received this computer on loan from a friend. It's a personally built computer. I haven't started it so i have no idea of the specifications and i haven't gotten a chance to talk to the person who gave it to her. So... i have limited information. But the problem is that i connect the monitor and it starts up shows the manufacturer logo, then goes to the Windows loading page and then after that is finish the monitor goes into to standby as if there is no signal going to it. I don't know what that means. The tower (from what i can see from the outside) does have a video card, and that is the connection i am using. When i use the standard connection it came with it doesn't repond from the very beginning. Anywho, any help. The Monitor does work on another computer i have it hooked up my laptop as i'm speaking right now. So i do know the monitor works.

So...

HELP!

Thanks,

HRH

Since you said you formatted and reinstalled your OS, and it still isn't working properly, this tells me it is most likely a hardware related issue. Try running a hardware diagnostic tool on your machine and see what it says.

I've had some problems with this since I first bought this computer in June but for the last couple of weeks it has gotten much worse. It's has finally gotten to the point that I am rebooting my computer 4-6 times per day.

Computer is Dell XPS M1210 laptop running Vista Home Premium. 2gb ram, Intel Core 2, T5600 @1.83Ghz, 32 bit OS. 120gb HD, dual partition. Partition C has 34.5 free of 99.7, partition D (recovery) has 6.42 free of 9.99.

Symptoms: on certain webpages, IE7 will stall and usually stop responding. Sometimes it's as simple as it not seeming to register mouse clicks, other times it stops responding completely so that I have to use task manager to close the programs. Occasionally task manager won't even work. When this happens, Windows Mail will often also stop responding or stall in the same fashion. I often will have to reboot 2 or 3 times in a row to get everything working correctly and then it may last a few minutes or a few hours before it does it again. It seems to happen the most on pages with a lot of links or a lot of pictures but sometimes happens on "smaller" pages. I have run disk defragmenter and uninstalled a program that was installed last week. Neither helped. 30 minutes ago I disabled CBrowserHelperObject Object, Sun Java Console, and ShockWave Flash Object in the IE7 add-ons. So far it seems to be helping, I have browsed a few pages that often (but not always) give me problems and they still hang a little bit but no... Read more

I've tried installing different operating system too, first xp and then 7 and the problem is still there. My usb ports work fine for other components, e.g my cam, usb soundcard, i even tried changing the port for the keyboard but it would do the same thing and it's only the keyboard that does that, i've tried a different usb keyboard too. same problem.
Any ideas/help would be appreciated!

A:Keyboard stops responding

Your keyboard is probably faulty, did you spill something in it? If so turn it upside down for a few days. I read you can actually run your keyboard through the dish washer to clean it in one of my college computer repair books, though I have never tried it. If I was you I would take out all the keys and clean it or run it through the dish washer and leave it face down for a day. Perhaps you need to update your keyboard driver, but thats highly unlikely.

So
your keyboard is likely dirty or dying

The couple of programs I have running have been over the last few days constantly stop responding. IE, Outlook express, AOL software. When I download off the internet that frequently causes it to stop responding. If, it recovers from not responding, I cannot then view any websites or download emails until I have rebooted. I have used system restore in a desperate attempt at rectifying the problem but to no good. I am at a loss as to what is causing it. whether something is wrong with my connection or XP or if there is something nasty has installed itself, I know could be possibilities but not sure where I should be looking. I even put my XP disk in to reinstall windows but even that stopped responding.

Please can anyone help.

i'm posting this for a friend,

the computer is a dell xps 600 with intel pentium D, 2gb ram, and geforce 6800 graphics on a XP SP3. when running malwarebytes on the computer, about 2 mins into the scan, malwarebytes would just freeze and there will be a message saying malwarebytes stops responding and asking do i want to send a report. neither yes/no option will automatically close malwarebytes and you will have to go into the task manager and terminate the process.

I've tried running quick scan, full scan, safe mode, and safe mode with networking. They all return the same message. I've tried uninstall and download the latest version and that doesn't help. I also ran superantispyware and found nothing. Ran several online scanners such as panada, eset, and kaspersky also nothing. However, the antivirus on the computer, trendmicro, found 2 viruses a while back and deleted them. Did the scan again with trendmicro and there's nothing. I'm wondering if the problem has to do with those 2 viruses.

Please let me know if you need more info. Thank you.

Hi everybody

This is my 1st post, so bare with me if it's not perfect...

I have a problem.

I am on a dell system, running Windows XP Home edition.
Now this problem has appeared from time to time ever since I bought th pc in 2004.
However lately I started playing a Zynga game called "Mafia Wars" on Facebook. And (only) there my problem gets to the point that I need to reboot my pc every 5 minutes now
It wasn't like that when I started playing around 1 - 1? month ago. I even just had my system reinstalled 2 weeks ago (in a local dell-pc shop), because the pc became totally unresponsive. Even bought a new harddisc because the old one stopped working/responding.

However...even after all that, I have the same problem, primarily when playing this game on FB.
The browser (IE8, but I also tried IE7 and Firefox. Same thing) starts working veeeeery slowly until it just becomes unresponsive. And when it doesn't respond anymore, I am presented with the option to close it down like "unnaturally".
So I do that, and by that time everything on my pc is working in slow-motion. So I go to reboot, and when windows is closing down, I get the message (wich haunts me)

"CtHelper32.exe is not responding....closing down".

If anyone knows what this could be related to? Any help would be welcome

In the shop they told me, that because my pc only has 512 rams, this program doesn't have the power to work properly. And they ordered 2 gig rams for me, ... Read more

Hi guys,

New here, this forum looks great. Hopefully if I hang about I can learn a little something.

Recently an IPB forum I visit was struck down by a virus for a few days and when I tried to visit said site during this time my PC was infested by a whole catalogue of trojans ad/spy/malware. I managed to rid myself of most of the blighters using progs like prevx1, ad-aware, spysweeper, spybot, ewido ..... basically tried them all!!

However, one issue remains - I am having a very strange problem when browsing the net. It seems fine at first then suddenly, after around 10 mins browsing the status bar times out and I get the old "this page cannot be displayed" message. If I restart my PC then I can browse for an further 10 mins until the same thing happens again!!

My connection still seems to be active but my browser just stops functioning, I tried Firefox and the same thing happens.

After googling hundreds of times I have dicovered that it MIGHT be something to do with ZoneAlarm. I did uninstall ZA around the time the initial problems struck but, after checking, there is still a folder in my windows/system32 folder containing a file named vsmon.exe which CANNOT be deleted, even in safe mode. I tried the prog "WhoLockMe?" and it just says "system" is using the file. It does not appear as a process in Task Manager.

Sorry for the very long winded post but I aint to good at explaining tech issues.

Did you have one of our security specialist look over a HiJackThis log for you? Your system may still be infected. Please post a hjt log for me to look over, if you are still infected I will move this thread to the appropriate forum.

Download and install: HiJackThis.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackThis.

Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into this thread.

Hi,

My PC has recently stopped responding completely at times. Even Ctrl Alt Del doesn't bring up the usual menu, and I have to use the power button to reboot. There is no BSOD, but windows prompts me to choose between normal boot and safe mode when I reboot. The issue arises regardless of what I'm doing; it has occured when I'm gaming, or just surfing the internet. Running system restore to a restore point before the most recent updates from windows doesn't seem to fix the issue.

The PC is about 1 year old. It's running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, installed with an OEM disc on a custom system. Using a P67A-UD3-B3 motherboard and i5-2400 processor.

Any help with my problem? I've attached the dump report and performance monitor report.

A:PC stops responding, no BSOD

Uninstall Avast and SPybot. Install Microsoft Security Essentials and run a FULL System scan. Also, download and install Malwarebytes, the free version and do not start the trial. Run a FULL SCAN ON ALL USER ACCOUNTS.

After doing so, please run a Disk Check Disk Check

After doing that, please run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker Run it three times, rebooting between each run. Take note of behavior after each task and post back with the results.

Thanks,

James

I have a problem with my HP pavilion A1243WB computer's mouse. A few months after I got it, the mouse would just stop responding. Everything else would be okay, there was no spyware, I had firewall/antivirus support, and nothing else would freeze. The keyboard would work, and the mouse actually works if you press the right click button to pull up a menu on the desktop. It's just stuck in the center of my screen and will not move. It's a standard 2-button mouse with a scroll wheel, a ball, and a cord. I cleaned the ball gently, the 'wheels' inside the core that the ball moves, and even tried manually moving them to see if the mouse would respond. It didn't.

I tried purchasing a new mouse that plugged into the same PS-2 port, not USB, that was a laser optical wireless. It was fine at first but the same problem cropped up only a few hours or a day or so later.

I just uninstalled the optical mouse, returned to the mouse the HP computer came with, and uninstalled the mouse drivers for it then rebooted. It reinstalled the drivers for me, but still the same problem.

What can I do to fix this?. I'm going to go purchase a new mouse tomorrow and hope this works, but I really don't understand what's causing the problem.

Hello!

I am using Teamviewer to access my desktop at home from my Android devices (Nexus 7 connected via tethering to my HTC One X which again is connected to an LTE network with unlimited data usage).

Here's the problem. Whenever I start Teamviewer and I logged in, I can see my desktop computer showing as online (which it really is) and I press it. It then starts trying to connect me to the desktop. And here's the funny part: Every time (I tried this at least 15 times) I re-installed the app on my Nexus 7, it would let me connect to the desktop and asks for the password - I can access my computer after re-installing the app on my Nexus 7.

However, if I close the app and start it up again a bit later without re-installing it, after tapping on my available desktop, it would simply not connect to it. I will get a connection error eventually. So a simple re-install of the app - and it's working again. For once. Not for twice.

TL;DR: My Teamviewer app on Android only works after a fresh install, never a second time.

Hey guys, I just recently started having a problem with my PC, and its bizarre. AVG 2011 Came out recently and I got prompted to Update. So I did, and after I've had so many problems, its getting really frustrating. AVG however is not the culprit I have found though. So, what happens is this. I'm doing whatever (multiple things have triggered it, it doesn't happen at random though), anything from opening Firefox, to going to my C drive to look at stuff, to playing a game (Just happened while playing Sims 3). My computer will lag for a split second then stop responding completely. Nothing works, Alt tabbing, clicking on other stuff, trying to open new stuff, nothing. The mouse still moves, and the computer isn't "locked up" it just doesn't respond for anywhere from 5 seconds to a minute, then it will kick back in and continue doing what it was doing. Winamp is playing music and it even stops playing the music for the duration of the problem. After it starts responding again the music will start playing again where it left off. What gives? Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

I uninstalled AVG because I thought it was the problem. After restarting the PC and doing some other stuff to try and recreate the problem, it did. So AVG isn't the problem. I think its a problem with my Hard Drive to be honest, can't be sure. Once or twice the start up has lagged and normally doesn't.

Anyway, here are some specs of my computer for those who may ask, i... Read more

ADAPTEC 29160 SCSI CONTROLLER
2 QUANTUM ATLAS V 10GB SCSI HARD DISKS

The problem is, the server works fine, and it was working fine for 3 months now, till last week when I found it dead, it was just dead, the HD's stopped responding, they were spinning but with no response. So I checked the scsi flat, I unplugged it and then plugged it again, turn on the system and everything works fine, ok.

The next morning, same thing, I restart the system but the scsi controller cant find any scsi device, so I took uout the scsi controller, put it back again and works fine!

Then today the same thing, HD stopped responding, they are not recognized by the controller, but I restart the system one more time but not touching anything, and it works!

So WTF? Why does it keep dying? Can someone help me? thanks!

I initially posted this in "Am I Infected?" After trying a few of the mod's suggestions, I was advised to repost here:

My computer is a 3 year old Dell running XP. A few weeks ago, I started having this problem. Shortly after starting up, the program I'm using will stop responding. I can still move the mouse around, but nothing else will work; I have to unplug the machine to even restart it. I tried running a scan with Malware Bytes, but that stops responding a couple of minutes into the scan. Some programs will run okay (haven't had issues just browsing stuff on Firefox) but if I try to even open others (like the DVD player program) it freezes up the whole computer.

These problems began shortly after I installed and started using the DVD creator software DVD Flick. For about 3 days I was doing a good amount of DVD burning. A couple of times, I had similar problems with that program not responding. Then about a week later, I was just having the general problem of programs not responding. I've since uninstalled DVD Flick, but the problems persist.

I've tried doing malware scans in Safe Mode, but have had the same problem: the program stops responding a couple of minutes into it. I've also tried using a boot disc (UBCD4WIN) and had the exact same problems. I thought it might be hardware problem related to overheating, so I cleaned the cpu fan and heatsink, but I'm still having the same problems.

Per the mod's suggestions in the ori... Read more

Hello

I've been having this problem since late june
basically the monitor would shut off with either a sound loop or the sound keeps going for a while then stops and the only way out is a hard reboot
it started happening mostly in games at first but now it happens even while just messing around in the OS (Win Vista x64) I tried different drivers for the GPU, I cleaned the PC from the little dust there was in (fans heatsinks etc), no luck, sometimes I'd go in a game and play for a while then it'd happen or sometimes it'd happen right away, but these lately it's been happening quite more often than it used to.

it's been suggested to me that it's the CPU overheating and that I should get a new Fan for it and some said it was the GPU being faulty (been using this computer for a little over a year now.)

I don't know if it's an overheating problem but it started happening when things got hot in the summer and I don't have Air Conditioning in room the PC is located in.

Please help

Thanks

hi, i'm not very tech-savvy so bear with me.

sometimes, my screen suddenly turns black, and the button on my monitor becomes that of when it's in standby mode. Like for example, when the monitor is on, the button shines green, and when it's on standby, it turns orange.

my keyboard lights also turn off, and the light that usually flashes when things load stays on permanently.

so, i can't do anything, i move my mouse, i try typing, but it just stays like that. Also, the only way to restart at this point is to switch off the switch on the back of the computer and switch it back on. The front buttons don't respond.

lol yeah i know i sound very amateurish but i don't know what else to do.
edit:
I'm pretty sure this has started happening one day when i plugged in my iPod Touch and suddenly, my computer restarted by itself. And now, every single time i plug it in, it'll restart. My iPod is kind of weird, for example, if i plug it in to my computer when it has less than 80% battery life and i try to add files into my iPod, my iPod will disconnect itself.

edit again:
Actually, it only started becoming more frequent ever since the day i plugged in my iPod and got the problem mentioned above.

I am having trouble with a modem that stops responding for no apparent reason. Sometimes it will stop right away and then others it can go for hours. The little icon on the task bar shows that it is still logged onto the internet and the send light on the Icon flashes from time to time but the recieve doesn't. But sometimes when it does this if I go to a completely different site it will start working again this is only occasionally. I have a US Robotics modem with all the latest drivers and updates. I contacted my ISP thinking it might be a settings issue and they walked me through everything and it is still doing the same thing. Then I contacted US Robotics Tech support and we went through the same thing and could find no problems. I finally thought it was the Modem hardware itself so I returned it and purchased another modem of the same make and model and it too is acting the same way. Is there anything else that I am forgetting. It is becoming a chore to disconnect and redial everytime this thing acts up. I am running a Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz with 384 megs of ram my modem is a US robotics model 5610b. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When opening excel files from a network drive the file opens, but as soon as I click on any cell, the program stops responding. I can move the files to my own HD, open it and work on it with no problems. When this happens I can't even close excel using ctrl/alt/del. I have updated all office 2000 apps and windows xp pro. I have a small network of six computers of which the one I use is the only one doing this. Any and all ideas are appreciated!

A:mouse stops responding

First of all, are you plugging directly to the machine or to a hub? I've seen some issues with hubs and some devices not always recognizing properly.....intermittent life yours. Also, have you tried a different USB port on the machine? As well, have you tried another USB mouse to see if it reacts in similiar fashion?

Hi there, good people of BP. I have an Inspiron 1521 running Vista SP2. It just stops responding once or twice a day. I have a feeling it is just old, this laptop, but I still want to keep it alive.

It happens most when Scratch (if you're not familiar, it is an animation program through MIT at scratch.mit.edu) or GIMP is running. Sometimes IE will stop responding, sometimes Chrome. Last week I had to run the Windows repair because it wouldn't start at all, but I can't say what the error message was.

I've updated everything that can be updated, scanned for viruses too. I know there is some problem with my graphics card not being compatible with IE9, but this has been happening for about two months, and it needs to get a hard shutdown each time.

Any ideas what I can do?

A:Vista SP2 often stops responding

Monitor your hardware temperature especially on graphics program running at the same time. Might as well run the built-in diagnostic test for your dell laptop and see if it reports any errors or warnings after. Have you tried cleaning the inside for some house cleaning?

Hi,

I have been having an aggravating problem with Firefox. It stops running after a while. If I try to click on a bookmark or look for something via the search box, nothing happens, it just hangs. Usually on the bottom left of the screen after the page loads it says "Done." When it acts up the word "Stopped" appears instead. I have to end up doing alt+ctrl+delete to restart it.

A:Firefox Stops Responding

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?

Hello;

This computer has begun to need re-booting many times per day. There are numerous problems commencing with startup, so I'll begin there.

I use the free version of Zone Alarm as my firewall application. It is:
ZoneAlarm version:5.5.062.000
TrueVector version:5.5.062.000
Driver version:5.5.062.000

AVG 6.0 FREE is my antivirus application.
Program Version: 6.0.788 Release Date: 9/2/2003
Virus Database: 533 Release Date: 12/3/2004

I run Ad-aware 6, Spybot S&D and HijackThis frequently in order to try to prevent intrusions, but something seems to have failed!

Upon startup, there is (recently) always a ZoneAlarm message saying that "explorer.exe is trying to access the internet" Although I have clicked the box for my (Deny) response to be remembered, the message has appeared at each startup for the last month or so, and I'm tired of that.

Likewise, ZoneAlarm asks for permission to allow Firefox to access the internet shows up each time I start that even though I've told ZA to remember it.

The most recent log from HijackThis follows:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.91.2

Hello, again;

I failed to say that I'm running XP Home SP1 on a Compaq 2805.

After a few minutes of working fairly well, it's usually necessary to re-boot, and I was trying to get the message out before that happened.

Hello I recently encountered this problem that I can only assume is caused by my graphics card (ATI Powercolor X1950 Pro). Sometimes when I'm playing a graphically intensive game, all the sudden the monitor will turn black and the light will start blinking. I can only assume that this happens because the monitor thinks it isn't receiving a signal anymore.

I thought that this might be heat related so I ran rivatuner along with 3dmark06 and the problem happened at 89 degrees Celsius. I don't think that temperature is too hot but I'm not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:ATI X1950 Stops Responding

89C is hot... Stop using rivatuner and get some more cooling to that video card. Try playing video games with the case open, and see if the problem continues

Hi there, I just followed every step in the... Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log!The problem im having is all of a sudden while in the middle of playing a game or browsing the web my computer stops! It just stops for about 20 seconds up to a couple minutes. The weird thing is is that when i push num lock the light still goes on and off, so its not like its actually frozen. Then all of a sudden whatever it was I was doing just pops back on the screen and i can carry on like nothing ever happened! Last but not least, I have a lot of pics on my computer and one folder wont open unless i open it with Paint Shop Pro. When I click on it the messege i get is "Data Execution Prevention... to help protect your computer, windows has closed this program". Then another messege after that that says windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Any suggestion would be appreciated on how I can fix these problems. Oh and one more thing... I know a couple people on my MSN list that have recently gotten viruses one way or another so Im kinda worried about that too, but every virus checker i've used said that there wasnt one there!Heres my log....Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 2:02:23 AM, on 17/04/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16414)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32... A:My Computer Stops Responding!

Hi Tiara25,I don't see anything malicious. I don't know what is happening with that file, but I do see a likely conflict between Symantec and F-Secure. It looks as if you had Norton installed and attempted to uninstall it? Can you confirm that? You have two instances of Norton's updater still present and I assume still running. If the freeze ups happen about the same time every day, it could be because Norton is trying to update itself and overloading your CPU.To stop this if this is the case, do the following--only do this fix if you have attempted to uninstall Norton and thought it was gone and you don't have any other Norton products that need updating.Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to the following entries:O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exeO23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXEClose all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop and Taskbar--and then click the "Fix checked" button, then reboot. Then, even if you don't do the above, please run this scan:Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <... about 2-5 minutes after logging in (fully loaded, I'm assuming) the computer seems to stop responding. If there's a scan, it will freeze, whatever I choose to do, it will ignore it, but the computer isn't frozen completely since I can still access the start menu. Computer works fine in safe mode. (I'm in safe-mode right now)

Had the computer for just over a year. This started happening within the last 3-4 weeks. My laptop has been over-heating quite a lot though since January. Any help will be appreciated. Cheers

You still have traces of G Data on your computer. Leftovers from bad antivirus removals can cause all sorts of problems.

Run the AVCleaner 2011 from G Data.

A few days ago I contracted a virus (PDM.DNS.Query in winsysm.exe according to Kaspersky). I noticed I probably had a problem because I was unable to open Task Manager with the combination Ctrl-Alt-Del. After cleaning it up, my computer has not been acting as usual, and sometimes it stops responding to commands. According to Spybot's Startup Menu Analyzer, I have some new checked items which I don't know how they got there. I also remember seen a message from Kaspersky that said something like "a file came out of quarantine" which I did not pay much attention at the time (I think it may have been winsysm.exe). I have attached a ighjackthis log file, a gmer analysis file and DDS file. Thanks a lot for any help.

Hey

I have a small problem.

This is what happens.

1. I open CoD4 and join a server
2. I join the server perfectly fine with no problems
3. About 3 seconds after I join the server the game stops responding.

Once it stops responding I have to Ctrl+Alt+delete and open task manager. Ctrl+Shift+Esc doesn't work.
After opening Task manager I have to end the process. The process doesn't end straight away though it takes about a minute.

This doesn't happen all the time but about 90% of the time it does. I have tried exiting all my running programs with no luck.

Any ideas?

Also This has only started recently and I've been playing it for years without problems.
