Windows tech imposter

Q: Windows tech imposter

I like many other users fell for a scam with a phony Microsoft tech supporter phone call. I am usually very carful but he was so convincing. I allowed him in my Gateway computer long enough for him to put a lock on my computer. Pay $200.and he will unlock. I refused and hung up. I checked on the web and found out that I was not the only fell for this scam. I gave him no credit card info. I reported him to the authorities.
I found out on the web that if you run the recovery disk, it will wipe out the lock and allow you to access my computer. It worked and is working fine.
My question is does this recovery disk remove any software that he may have put on my computer. I am running Bitdefender antivirus and I always keep my programs up to date. Would you have any additional advice.
Thanks Gerald

If you performed a Recovery to Factory settings, all is wiped out from the computer, including your own documents.

This workstation started out with a Rootkit infection detected by ComboFix. Symptoms included losing all icons on the desktop and start menu. The user folders were all made system and therefore hidden. After running ComboFix, TDSSKILLER, Spybot and Malwarebytes the system seemed to run great. After about 6 hours of operation today the system started acting slow again. Then there was a bunch of windows that would pop up, after running ComboFix again I noted in the log file that qttask.exe was in there many times with a bunch of spaces before the extension. I deleted all those files.

Currently Adobe Acrobat 9 keeps trying to install. While in the process of trying to install I bring up the task manager and bring up its process which indicates that it's exporer.exe. If I stop it the explorer does indeed stop and does not start back up again till reboot (I thought it may not be the explorer.exe used by Windows). I will also include the latest log file from ComboFix in case that gives any clue.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help... much appreciated.

I have just run into something new (to me) that I thought I would share here.

I have a user who was having an intermittant problem getting online with her browser, tho her computer would still be connected and I was able to log on to her using VNC (though Hamachi). She is a Firefox user, who has BOClean and Avira on her system and up to date. She (or I) periodically runs SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot.

When she tried to browse she was getting a plain white screen in Firefox. IE would do the equivalent, saying that the server was unavailable no matter where she tried to go. If she rebooted her system, everything would work correctly until the same problem would return.

When I remoted into her system I found that an old version of Netscape had been installed along with WinRAR and a version of WSFTP. A version of "mailbomber" had also been installed.

There was also a bogus subfolder in her IE folder called "explorer" with subs that had numbers for name and an "explorer.exe" file that had a heart for an icon. The description of the exe read ICE211 Microsoft???? or something very similar. I didn't find this the first time I was troubleshooting her system.

On my first pass through her system I had found and deleted all the above mentioned folders files and logs but I had missed the errant explorer.exe and it's parent folder, stuck in the IE hierarchy. She continued to have intermittent browsing problems that were temporarily cur... Read more

I am having problems with a virus that pops up and tells me that my computer is infected with viruses or that it has blocked Trojan-BNK.Win32.keylogger.gen from accessing the internet. It is always claiming to be XP Guardian. When I end the task through task manager, it asks if I would like to end MSASCui.exe, which is unresponsive. The virus also affects my internet browser. He stole someone's ID and username from a "friend" on Facebook. I thought it was my friend private messaging me, but it was an imposter. I gave to my friend my email address so I could correspond with this "new possible friend" and we exchanged a lot of emails and pics for about a week. The very last comment he made was "I have 1.2 million dollars in my account, how much do you have to help the underpriviledged kids" I told him I have no savings account and that was the last I heard from him. He led me to believe that he was going to relocate and meet me. I was able to copy/paste here for you the full message source.

I am a Laptop Technician in Canada, and well to e honest I am really tired of junking so many motherboards because something has gone wrong on them. So I have decided to learn how to track down what on the board is blown, and replace it.

Can anyone you point me to where I can get board schematics and tech manuals for various laptops? And possible some sites with nicely documented details on the process of tracing down the short or whatnot?

Thank you,

I bought Windows 7 from and when I called up Microsoft for support they told me that they don't support open windows 7 what ever that means. So I paid the same price but no support because I didn't buy it from Microsoft. I'm just confused. Can someone explain this to me or was the tech person just full of crap?

A:No Tech Support for Windows 7?

Yes, MS supports any retail copy with the best funded Tech Support in the business.

I also bought Amazon (for the free shipping) pre-order Upgrade and have gotten MS support already.

They are required by policy to troubleshoot to completion any issue, even elevating to a research team that communicates with the developer teams, as long as customer is cooperative.

As with any tech support you may get a bad agent or someone having a bad day. I always politely hang up and call back.

In the past by being appreciative and eager to learn, I have gotten a full education in clean reinstalls w/o bloatware, virus hunting, optimization, etc. - worth far more than the price of the product.

Over this past weekend I have been getting calls from "Windows Tech Support". The first time the tech said my computer was sending out warning messages to them. I asked him how it was doing that I cannot remember what he said he asked "you are using windows OS correct?"
I said so I use a Mac he hung up when I said that. I just laughed and let it past. A few hours they call back. They have called several times and today they call claiming they are "Dell tech support" I do have a Dell laptop (How they know that?) They said my Dell was sending them warnings
bla bla bla. I told them I was running Linux they hung up. I laughed again and let it pass. Then an hour later they call back. Frustrated I told them I was not home and asked if they could call back. I am waiting on them to call back. I have made a whole drive backup with True Image. I am going to let them log in and I will be watching what they do. I got a text document on my desktop named "credit card info" don't worry all that is in it is
idiot typed all over it. I cannot wait for them to call. I am going to be very careful with this. I will be watching to make sure they don't harm my system. I could set up a VM and do this but don't really have time.

A:Windows Tech Support

If you're not going to use a VM do NOT let them access the computer. I don't care how carefully you monitor them, they could still do something to a PC on your network.

So recently, I've installed Windows 10 on a separate partition on my 500 GB hard disk that's about 40 GB, and it works perfectly. Except that I can't boot back into Windows 7.

All of my files are still accessible and working, I just can't actually boot into the OS. When I attempt to through the Windows 10 boot screen, first it reboots, then it goes to a black screen with 8 short lines of bright blue pixels on the top left. After a couple of moments, multi-colored pixels start appearing and changing all across the top couple of lines of pixels. This happens in the course of about a minute or so. I usually give up and turn it off cause I notice there is obviously something wrong.

Is there anything I could do to fix this? I've looked everywhere to see if anyone had this problem, but I couldn't seem to find anything.

Thanks in advance!

I was recently duped and need to find out if my PC will have any issues as a result.

One of the programs on my computer crashed and I agreed to send in a Windows Error report. A few days after this (not sure if it was coincidental or not) I received a telephone call pertaining to be from Windows Technical Support. They told me I had a problem with my PC and gave me directions on how to access the event viewer. I did this and they showed me that there were a lot of "errors" within my PC.

They told me that they could help sort this out. They never asked for any money. They told me they needed access to my computer. They asked me to download a program AA-V3.exe from Ammyy. I did this but it would not let the person connect.

They then asked me to go to a website ShowMyPC. Which again I did believing they were from Windows. We connected through this site - the site said that it was connected anyway. The guy on the phone said that there was a problem and he couldn't access the PC - it must be running really slow. He then asked me for my passwords. At this point I was concerned and told him I did not believe he was from Windows and did not give him my passwords. I put the phone down and closed down the PC. Since then they have rung me back 10 times and I have put the phone straight down.

I noticed the other day when I was reading through the forum that there is a Windows 8 site. I checked it out and it is nice to see that when the betas come out people will be able to help each other there. Okay, this is gonna be a doozy of a topic, so let's say what happened.

I got a Venue 11 Pro in the mail yesterday. Just the tablet. Don't have the keyboard dock yet. The model with 8 Gigs of RAM and an i5 processor if that helps.

Windows 8.1, so I installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview and everything looked good.

So I installed Google Chrome and when I pressed "Open in Windows 8 Mode" It got glitched out. Wouldn't load properly. Was weird. So then I restarted my PC.

After restarting the PC, it still wouldn't work. And the start menu wouldn't load. Like I'd tap the start button, hit the tablet's start button. Nothing. I could right click it and use those options, but the start menu wouldn't come up.

So I tried to do a PC Refresh and this is where things get crappy. It started the refresh and said it was 8% done.

Went to bed and woke up about 5 or 6 hours later and it was still at 8%. Waiting a few more hours. Still at 8%. Then, I did the dumb move of manually powering off the PC since it seemed to be frozen on the refresh after nearly 9 hours at the same percentage.

After that happened, it would only boot to recovery options. So, I tried to do the recovery that wouldn't affect your files. Had an error that it couldn't complete. So I tried to "completely reinstall Windows" option. And it resulted in this:

"Your PC Needs to be repaired. Error Code: 0xc0000034" It did not have a BCD section on... Read more

Looking confused, he thinks for a second, the just starts typing "calculator" on the Desktop. After that doesn't work, he starts clicking around until he accidentally grabs the top of the screen and pins it on the side. He then clicks in the empty space and makes it to the Start screen. Then, he looks for calculator in my pinned things, and after no success, he then types "calculator" again and successfully opens the program. His first comments "well, it will take some getting use to, but it's no big deal." I then show him how the Start button actually is there, just hidden. He affirms that yeah it's no big deal, just will take some getting used to.

Later, he was watching me use my PC, and I downloaded the Wikipedia app and pinned it. After that, I put down the computer and played some Xbox with him beside me. He's very interested in history, so he picks up the computer, and goes into the Wikipedia app. He asks me how to search in the app, and I showed him how to use Charms. After that, he was using it as if he had his whole life. He searches some Wikipedia, then when he can't find what he wanted there, he goes back to Start (using the hidden button) and hit the IE icon (which sends him to the desktop) and uses it to search and find things. I am a free lance computer tech working for a company who has 4 computers all networked together. I had serviced all their computers in February of 2016 and installed AVG Virus protection and 2 Spyware programs on all 4 computers and got rid of anything
they found.

Plus I instructed them to run Malwarebytes & Super Anti-spyware weekly, and get rid of whatever they find and they have.

Then 2 weeks ago, out of the blue, 1 of the computers started getting a "User Account Control Pop-up Box" asking for a password.

It is not happening to any of their other computers, just this one.
This computer has Windows 8.1 installed on it. They tried every password they had and none work, then they called me Friday 7-1-16.

This is what I have tried, logging in as the Admin.
I tried not putting in a password and that also fails.
I can not access the User Control Settings.
Some parts of the computer works just fine, like logging into windows, opening a browser, accessing their webpage, receiving orders, printing orders, BUT you can not update any programs nor can you uninstall any programs, because you get that darn "User
Account Control Pop-up Box asking for a password!"
(Example you can't update AVG Virus Protection, Malwarebytes, Super Anti-spyware, Adobe Reader, Java, Adobe Flash Player because you get that darn "User Account Control Pop-up Box asking for a password!")

I can access the Control Panel and I can go into Account Set... Read more

When you install Windows XP from an OEM (non-branded) Windows CD, does it analyze your hardware and SELECTIVELY install drivers accordingly OR does it just install the SAME basic plug-n-play drivers every time regardless of what type of hardware exists on the machine?

The reason I ask is that I'm wondering if you can create a test drive to swap in on ANY system to help determine if a problem is hardware or software related. I've always heard that using a drive from another machine will usually cause a blue screen because of mismatched drivers. But what about if you just leave the drivers that the Windows CD "chooses" to install?

Maybe I should just stick to booting up with an Ubuntu Live CD as one method of quickly seeing if the hardware on the machine is likely healthy or not?

A:Tech question: Windows XP reinstall drivers

I believe it installs the basic drivers from Microsoft for the particular hardware installed on the machine.

I put my HP laptop on sleep. Then I woke up and tried to turn it on. It turned on but was on a black screen. Normally black screen is for up to 5 seconds before something shows on screen but this time it was more than 5 mins and nothing so I rebooted it. The computer said updating because I had a pending restart. It updated then rebooted and said fixing disk errors (don't know why) then after it finished, it rebooted again and said preparing automatic repair. 5 seconds later it crashed with a bsod but was to fast to find out what the error was. I found out it was driver irql not less or equal something like that. It keeps looping auto repair 5 seconds later bsod. I tried f8 and startup settings but it keeps coming up with a screen saying recovery your pc needs to be repaired with error 0x000000f.

What should I do? I can't boot anything up or go into start up settings if I needed to get to safe mode or other things. No CD driver neither. I downloaded Windows 10 and copied its files to a flash drive then realized it was Portuguese copy BUT even though I don't know what to do with the flash drive booting from efi file or something like that. I have an HP Pavillion laptop that is 2 years old, and runs Vista. I want to do a fresh install of Windows 7. Everything I need is saved to flash drives, and I want to start completely fresh.
I had sort of thought I could do it myself, just pop in a disk, which would walk me through it. But I read some article which described a 36 step process and I got intimidated.
I could just pay a technician to do it. I have the money.
How hard is it?

Hi, my first post here. Warning: I am 64 years old, have a basic knowledge of computers, but leave the "problems" to the experts.

So here's why I'm posting. I set Windows Essential to do a full scan last night. When my husband got up this morning, it was frozen. I checked the log and found this:

application hang occurred 5x
windows update client occurred 2x
Disk 4x
service control manager 3x
kernel-event tracking 2x
service control manager

"The program IEXPLORE.EXE version 11.0.9600.17937 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed."

Performance Information Rating scores:
processor 7.2
memory (RAM) 7.2
graphics 4.7
gaming graphics 5.6
primary hard disk 387 GB free (466 GB total)

My computer is set to run Essentials every week, but lately the icon has been orange, indicating a problem. So I thought I'd run it last night and this is what occurred.

It may be helpful to know that my husband's log-in for work requires Internet Explorer. I prefer Google Chrome. Could that be part of the issue? It's been that way for years....

I probably have given you more information than you need, but I am close to illiterate when it comes to fixing my computer, so please excuse my low level of knowledge here. Thank you to anyone who helps me (using very low-tech instructions).

A:Windows 8 Internet Explorer Tech Support Needed

Did you have any luck resolving your IE problem yet?

If not:
1) Check in Event Viewer to see details about the IE errors. There should be some details in the Applications log.
2) If you are behind in your Windows Updates, manually visit Windows Updates & install any important, recommended, or critical updates. IE tends to get patched a lot.
3) Run some malware scans.

If the problem occurred suddenly after IE had worked fine for a long time, you can also consider using System Restore, choosing a restore point from before the IE errors. Programs added since the restore point might need to be reinstalled afterwards.

Hello everyone, here is an interesting problem. All of my windows 7 PCs (around 30) & windows 8 PCs (around 4) can access a file share on a windows XP PC. No username or password is required. Everyone has a mapped network share to\\server\share and even right now 100% of everyone can access it with no problems. i upgraded this PC to windows 10 tech preview and now insider preview. Now i had no problems accessing the share form this PC until now. Now, it is asking me to authenticate, asking me for a username and password. i have checked with all members of staff and no one is reporting not being able t access the server and 4 people,, 3 windows 7 and 1 windows 8 actually responded to say all is me there is something wrong with my PC and it is some kind of update that is now causing the issue. Can someone help me get access back to the server please? There is no username or password set. Hi there,

I had bought upgrade licence for windows 8 Pro and used it in a machine while i was in USA. Then i moved to Australia and the Machine in USA was wiped and donated. I moved to Australia, bought another machine with windows 7 and tried to upgrade using purchased windows 8 licence (same licence keys that was used in USA) but windows was not activating.
So, i got in online chat with windows tech support guy who checked and verified purchased licence as valid. He said, he is located in Philippines and asked for remote access to my desktop. He played about 1 hr, he was trying to use the key that i purchased and was not able.
Finally he said, now your windows is activated and nothing to worry about.
I thought okay, good then.
Recently, i tried to upgrade to windows 8.1 and continually it says, i am not eligible. then i checked to windows activation and it appears that the Microsoft tech guys used some other keys than my own purchased key to activate and which says will expire in 30 days from today(expires on 09/11/2015). But apparently that expiry date keeps on changing as time passes by. Say, last moth i checked, it was saying will expire on 08/**/2015 (where ** is the date 30 days from checked date) and yesterday was saying will expire on 09/10/2015).
I dont know what kind of licence key he used.
When i checked the Windows activation, it says

Windows is activated.
Your windows licence will expire soon.

The original windows licence is most likely still active on the original laptop you donated.
Wiping the hard drive and removing all data including the Operating System does not remove the activation key which is tied to the BIOS once installed.
Basically anyone can install Windows 8 on that laptop and it will automatically activate.

So, I was thinking about installing Windows 10 Technical Preview on my computer. But, now I have backed out due to concerns of it not being finished. My problem is that the Windows Updates icon in the Notifications Center keeps saying Windows 10 Technical Preview is ready. I have already hidden the 10 Tech Preview Update. How do I get it to stop saying this?

A:Notification Center: Updates Icon Keeps Saying Windows 10 Tech Preview

You must have intended to try Win10 and record of that attempt has been saved somewhere on your computer.
Press Windows key plus R then type msconfig in the Run box, under the Startup tab Uncheck anything relating to Windows 10 TP. If you do Uncheck something you'll be prompted to reboot. In some cases a brute force procedure is needed and usually required editing the Registry, not a place for the inexperienced to play as one misstep will cause Windows to not work.

Obviously many people's Windows 8 concerns are legitimate, and I don't mean to imply that everyone who's posting against Windows 8 isn't legit, but I've seen some posts lately where people talked about moving to Apple because of Windows 8, and that just didn't make sense.

One case was someone who claimed that he helped a frustrated Acer user throw his (or her, don't remember if it was specified)) Windows 8 laptop in the garbage bin and get a Mac with Windows 7 on it instead. That didn't make any logical sense (just downgrade the Acer).

Another post was of someone who claimed to know 12 people who moved to Apple because they were frustrated with Windows 8.

These reports just don't make much sense to me, so feel like they're untrue. I can't believe they are made by Windows users, even Windows 8 haters, since these usually go for the "Windows 7 is best" line. So I imagine that they are either Apple users trolling or people being paid to do that.

What do you think?

A:Is Apple paying people to diss Windows 8 on tech sites?

Probably both. I am really skeptical of Apple, and am not really a fan because of the methods in which they work. I recently built a new PC with a budget of 1000 to 1500, and bought Win7 instead of Win8 with it because I don't like the new OS interface. If Windows users move to a Mac, it is again a new interface (not as good as Windwos 7) so it contradicts them moving to Mac, especially in the scenario you mentioned with the Acer user. Finally, the Apple computers are worth less than the price that was charged. You can pick up a new 1000 Apple PC, or a 500-800 PC with the same specifications. I have to use Macs at work, and even though they are only 1/2 years old, and Run the Apple OS, they are much slower than our 600, dual core desktop that is around 4/5, even 6 years old!

My first reaction was "LOL, nice try, I'll just close this". But then I remembered I could have some fun by creating a VM and letting them "fix it".
So I set up a VM and call the number. I start explaining how I was browsing the web when I got this message. They say "not a problem", and ask me to press Windows+R and go to and start a remote session.
When they're already in my VM, they connect me to the Microsoft server using ping (LOL ) :

Talk about turning the tables!

He?d already noticed that the remote control software the scammer was using allowed him to send and receive files. So he turned to his inbox, where he had several samples of Locky ransomware variants. He grabbed one, renamed it to look like a digital photo, and fired it over.

Kwiatkowski feigned vision trouble and suggested that Dileep just have a look at a picture of the credit card instead. It certainly sounds like he did, though, strangely, the picture must?ve been corrupted? because nothing came up on his screen when he double-clicked it.Click to expand...

Needless to say, this should not be seen as a recommended course of action for the general public!

I have recorded some videos on my EasyCap DC60 from my Xbox 360 gameplays, but when I upload the video into the movie maker for editing I don't get any images, I just get the sound, I don't knoe whats wrong. If theres help out there let me kno.

A:EasyCap DC60/Windows Movie Maker Tech Support Needed

If I had to guess, I'd think that it's a codec issue. Windows 8 doesn't support DVD playback in Windows Media Player ("out of the box" -- it has to be added), and likely some support is lacking for full Windows Movie Maker functionality as well. Microsoft did not include the codec support in Windows 8 at least partly because for each license of Windows 8, it had to pay a fee to include the codecs.

You can probably solve your issue either by installing a third-party DVD player (like the free VLC, or like a CyberLink program like PowerDVD), or a package of codecs. If you've purchased a DVD drive in the last year or two, it should have come with a third party optical recording program that should have all the necessary codecs included.

I find that cnet's is my most trusted site for downloads, so that if you want to try the codec method, here's a link that might do --- Windows 8 Codecs - CNET
--- and if you want to try installing the free VLC player, here's a link for that --- VLC Media Player - CNET

Best of luck

A:Beware this fake Windows BSOD from tech support scammers' malware

Microsoft has sounded the alarm over a fake installer for its Security Essentials, which attempts to trick victims into contacting bogus help centers.

Tech-support scammers have stepped up their technical game, prompting a "severe" warning from Microsoft over new Windows malware that mimics Microsoft's free Security Essentials antivirus, and then displays a fake blue screen of death, or BSoD, with an error message and a suggestion to call a 1800 number that is not a Microsoft support center.

"Real error messages from Microsoft do not include support contact details," Microsoft said on its Malware Protection Center blog, warning of the new threat. It also never asks for payment for delivering tech support.

I just received a phone call from a person purporting to be from the Windows Technical Center, Jacksonvill, FL (888-970-4250) who said that they have noted a security issue with my computer.  This person asked me to open the run command line and bring
up the windows event viewer (eventvwr).  Prior to opening up windows event viewer I asked for verification of this person's credentials and he gave me the information above, and a name that I did not write down.
The process appeared to be somewhat suspicious and I said that I would need to verify this person and organization and call back the toll free number before I went any further.
I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and can offer any advice....

I am helping a friend with a nasty infection.  He received the phone calls from the scam MS support people claiming he had viruses.  Eventually he gave in and let them have control of his computer.  He cut them off before paying but not before they had control.  I took a look at his computer later and found no evidence that there was any lingering problem on his computer, so I assumed that it was just a Teamviewer type tool that they had him download that gave them access.  After removing and running a few malware removal/scanning tools, I pronounced him clean.
An hour later he called and said his computer spontaneously logged him out and put a password on his user profile.  the password hint is "Your computer is infected, call this phone number to unlock".  I went back to his place and bypassed the (very real) Windows password lock.  Scanned again, ran TDSSKiller and a few other malware removers again, but suspected that he MUST have done something because this was a clean computer.
Didn't have time to do anything else in the past couple days but went back over yesterday.  Spent an hour on the phone with the number that the scammer gave us, trying to figure out if they had a secret back door into the computer.  They did not, and kept trying to get me to install various teamviewer clones to which I gave them the wrong ID once installed, which totally threw them for a loop.  I never actually did allow them in... Well, I ran out of patience  I left the computer offline for 24 hours and the infection did not return.  I then connected it for another 24 and by the time I checked in, it had been locked down again.  So it'll be a mystery I'm afraid.

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop, Windows 7-64bit.
My WMP11 does the following:
1. It clones music titles...even in front of my eyes.
2. Music files disappear.
3. Titles are now assuming wrong names even though content remains.
4. My music files come from my Music Library. Those have not changed or cloned..

5. I deleted WMP11 and re-installed...but all the above errors returned.
6. My Library files are skewed. Music is mixed with Video and with Documents and all around. Why? I dunno.
7. My music library is around 25GB; but it changes with the losses mentioned in #2 above.
8. I tried RealPlayer but their format leaves a lot to be desired by me. Also, it keeps requiring Flashplayer and no matter how many time I download it, it asks for it again.
9. I am 80 years old, not very computer savvy and I'm blessed with Parkinsons. Music is my hobby.

wus up guys. i have a problem. i recently put together a computer for myself and everything was installed fine.

computer specs:
P4 2.6ghz 800fsb
Gygabite motherboard.
2 harddrives with a total of 200gig.
Geforce fx 5600
400w power supply.

have the computer for about a month now and it runned great untill today.

the problem is today i went put some CPU Thermal Paste on the cpu since i didnt have any on there before. then i turned it on, everything turns on but nothing comes on the screen. motherboard boots. all the fans turn on. but i dont get a beep nor does anythink come on the screen. the monitor doesnt even turn on from standby mode. so i went back and tried to see if i didnt install the cpu rite but it was in just fine. after playing with it for 2 hours i still cant figure it out.

anyone have any idea why its doing this?

A:Need some Tech Help Plz

I have seen things just "GO". Do you have quality RAM?. Was the CPU running hot? (Over 50 degrees C), Did you Over Clock??. A lot of things could be wrong. With the Info of your PC running ok for a month,, i would thingk a componant went bad. with 512meg of RAM is it 2X 256 or 1X 512,,try removing a stick,,then try the other. Also can you tell if the HDD's power up and does the floppy seek?? if not,, i would look twards the MOBO witch is ???? let us know. if that happens, then you know its an OS or BIOS prob. Back to the fact that you didn't have thermal compound,,did you use the Factory Cooler?? whitch has a thermal "pad". or a "After Market" cooler?? To sum it up start with the simple things,,Clear CMOS,swap the RAM and if you can try another VGA card, then let us know how it goes.

Wish the best for ya!

IE Crashes
Remove Pagerage Toolbar and Whitesmoke

I am currently going through the family pc to clean up any non-needed files and I see that some program by the name of ASPCA TriMini Reminder by V5.0... is a downloaded program.
Anything that I am not sure of I usually check to see what it is before I remove it. I keep finding information that this is probably a virus.
I have also tried to delete pagerage toolbar and whitesmoke and those have been unsuccessful.
My family primarily uses firefox. If I will need to do something in IE I will need help fixing that as well because the browser doesn't seem to want to work right. It has been that way for a while.

Any assistance with getting whatever is going on with our family pc would be great!

(Anti-Virus was removed because I am re-adding it through our internet service if you notice it says none.)

I have a WD1600ys SATA drive on ASUS M2N4-SLI board.I get an occasional warning in event viewer.ID #51. Sometimes one per day up to 25 in a one minute period.
I spoke with a tech rep. He told me that this was an enterprise drive and should be on a raid controller. It's now on Serial ATA controller. If this's correct, how will I change to raid controller? Do a repair install and F6 the new driver in? Then disable the sata controller, enable raid in bios? And hope it boots?
Thanks. bb

I've built myself quite a system, Theoretically its nothing short of kick ass, however, it runs low on resources all the time. I built a gaming system, (top of the line for most puter parts) it boots to desktop in under 30 seconds. I have 9 things running in my task bar. I play 2 games Eve Online and World of Warcraft.

Most of the stuff running in taskbar include Nvidia tools, Sound, Curse client (wow addon manager), Microsoft essentials AV, kbrd profiler (logitech), mouse config (razor), my messenger proggie, 2 others that escape me.

Any suggestions will suffice - but the system is more than capable of running more and shouldn't by hardware specs run out of resources at all. "But, hey its windows is the easy answer" - Not the answer i'm looking for - Looking for empirical evidence to why this is happening and will it be fixed in any service pack?

My Setup:

OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge
Mem: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB)
VDC: EVGA GTX570 2560MB (025-P3-1579-AR)

SSD: Plextor M3 Series PX-128M3 2.5" 128GB SATA III
PWS: SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 650D

I find it really hard to believe that I can come close to low resources. According to my resource manager its only using up to 8gigs of physical memory even when my games are running and it stays nominal in that margin. Is it simply a windows glitch?
