Problem with Microsoft Works 8 Calendar reminder

Q: Problem with Microsoft Works 8 Calendar reminder

Hi,

It has been decided that my computer is free from malware, so I've been referred to this forum.

I recently downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware program. The instructions were good and it worked fine. But, now I can't access my calendar for reminders. I get a generic error message saying "Microsoft Works 8 has encountered a problem and must close."
It does not say what problem.

I have a Works 8 installation disk, but I think if I just reinstall Works, I'll lose all the notes on my calendar.

The only other thing I use from Works is a simple database which is working fine. Only the calendar reminder feature won't run. If I reinstall Works I could lose all the info on my database and I don't feel like re-entering over 1000 files.

I have the database backed up and it looks like I 'should' be able to run the backup file if the original gets wiped.
However, although I have backed up all the files in Works calendar folder, I don't know which one(s) hold the reminder info. I've tried replacing existing files with the backups, but they don't run so it looks like the problem is not with the calendar data files themselves, but something more basic to Works 8.

I recently found that if I right click on WksCal.exe and choose "Run as..." and use "administrator ", I get a different error message. This one simply says that Works could not find some needed files and suggests that they may have been moved or erased. It does not say what files.

I'm using Windows XP Home, and I have an installation disk for Microsoft Works 8. I have never needed any system disks and things were working fine before I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program.
I don't use Microsoft Office though it came pre-installed on the computer when I bought it back in 2003, or so.

I've tried rolling back to a date before I used the anti-malware program but it had no effect on this problem.

One more thing I tried was going to the Add/Remove program on the Control Panel. I have 2 entries for Microsoft Works. When I click on a support link, I get the option to repair the existing installations. I have tried this for both entries and niether one works.

I hope someone here knows how to get Works 8 calendar reminder working so I don't have to re-enter all the reminders.
Thanks.

Ok, I'm in the correct forum now.

I recently downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware program. The instructions were good and it worked fine. But, now I can't access my calendar for reminders. I get a generic error message saying "Microsoft Works 8 has encountered a problem and must close."
It does not say what problem.
I am not using Microsoft Works 8, nor have I downloaded or installed it, ever.
I'm using Microsoft Works 2003 which came pre-installed on my computer when I bought it.
I never upgraded.
None of the items in the list of malware found said anything about microsoft calendar.
I've tried rolling back to a date before I used the anti-malware program but it had no effect.
My calendar data seems to be there, and it was backed up, the program just won't run.
The only other thing I use from M. works is a spreadsheet which still opens fine.

I can't find any way to make the calendar run.
I hope someone has some ideas.
Thanks.

Help! I posted the following in the business software forum 2 months ago, and have had no replies. Surely there is someone out there with a possible solution!

My MS works reminder system has failed - it no longer pops up automatically to remind me of an entry on the calendar. I tried reinstalling Works, but this did not help.
It is possible this is related to a new computer, but I thought it was still working after the program was transferred to this computer.
I am using XP Pro (was XP Home on the old computer).
Someone suggested copying the shortcut to the start menu, but I am just computer illiterate enough that I couldn't figure that one out. Besides which, the program worked fine for a long time after the original installation.

While Works on the whole is fine I'm having problems with the he reminder function, even though the reminder exe is listed in the correct places it doesn't produce a pop up at the time of the reminder, I've set it to 15 mins & 30 mins before to test it & nothing.
Opening up works calendar doesn't pop up the reminder either but manually opening the reminder does work.
When I first install it works fine until I restart the laptop then it stops working.
Anything I can look for or do to fix this?
Tia.

I've got a client who is using microsoft works 8.0 calendar and recently had to replace his hard drive and reinstall his operating system. The problem we're having is that all of his calendar data is stored as a .wcd file and the calendar will only import icalendar files and vcalendar files .ics and .vcs. Is there anyway to convert the data file from .wcd to .ics or is there a way to get the calendar to read a .wcd file? He is using Windows XP, service pack 2. All of my searching on Google lead me nowhere. Microsoft's website was no help either. If a .wcd file is from an older version of Works calendar, where can you get that version of works? Any help on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

I downloaded some Microsoft updates, rebooted, and now my Microsoft Works Calendar won't come up. I've been to MS website and tried their fix - it didn't work. Next option is to delete Works and reload. My question is - will this deletion get rid of all of my data files along with the program? Also, is Outlook Express part of Works? I've tried to find out, but can't. I'm really concerned about making a mess of things.

Outlook Express is not part of Works.

What version of Works do you have and is it supported by Windows XP?

This means that I cannont see sunday and cannot easily move to the next month, any ideas on how to remove the date/months and hopefuly this will restore the full month view. Strangely, when I print the date months are at the top and all days of the month print fine.

Cannot obtain correct printing from Microsoft Works Calendar.

The Microsoft site says this is common with Internet Exp.5.5-

I am using 6.0 and still have the same problem.

The calendar pages come out printed on 2 pages rather than

one page. The columns are elongated causing this to happen.

Have checked the printer with other programs and the printing

is correct.

A:Microsoft Works Calendar

This should do it.
Open the calender, from the file menu select "export > HTML". Remember where you saved it to. Close the calender and go to the file you exported and double click it. It should open in Internet Explorer. Now select print from the file menu.

I am using Windows XP and Microsoft Works Suite 2003. I have been using the Microsoft Works Calendar for home use, printing the monthly calendar in landscape format on my Canon i960 printer. This produces a 9"-6" one-month calendar.

Recently, the calendar started printing out only 7"-4" in landscape format. I have tried everything to correct this and cannot. Any other printing in other programs is normal so I do not think it is a printer problem. However, I cannot find the controls in the Calendar to restore the 9"-6" size. Any suggestions?

Last year I puchased a new computer with Windows XP. Most of the files were retrieved from the old C drive and installed on my new computer. I have been using Microsoft Works Calendar for many years, and rely on it for reminders to pop up. I recently had the business where I purchased the computer look at it because of a start up problem. Since then, it seems the reminders do not pop up for the specified time I want them to any longer, i.e., a meeting 3 days from now and a reminder would be put into the window and then click on OK. In the past, I've never had a problem with getting the reminders until recently. Do you have any suggestions? Barbara

I realize this isn't a crucial question ... but I have Windows 98SE and after the end of 2004 the holidays and other notations ... like "Daylight Savings Time Begins", "Father's Day", etc. ... ceased to appear on the calendar.

Am I "on my own" at this point? Any way to have these dates appear other than manually inputing the dates and events? There are increasingly fewer and fewer businesses that distribute calendars to customers these days.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

My son says you are the best for troubleshooting, so here goes. I have a Toshiba laptop wireless and all the programs came pre-installed with a Recovery disk ONLY included. I have Windows XP Home Edition. My problem is with the Microsoft Works 8.0 Calendar, which was pre-installed along with Microsoft Office S&T Edition, which I do not use. The Calendar was working fine until yesterday and now I get an error message that just says "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then I can choose whether or not to send an error report, which I have....several times. I've read the "official" Microsoft version of the fix, but it is telling me that I possibly have a corrupted file and to reinstall it from the Works CD, which I do not have. When I run the recovery CD, there is no Microsoft Works listed in programs to recover. I'm really at a loss! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!! MomM

I have Microsoft Works 9 and when I try to export a calendar as HTML it does not export correctly. If I want the export to begin with Sunday, it copies the previous week into the export. I have designated Sunday to be the beginning of the week. If I want to export July 5-11, the export ends up in the HTML file as June 29-July 11. This problem concerns my father's laptop which runs on Windows XP Home SP3 and has Microsoft Outlook 2007 installed on it. I think my father updated from Outlook 2003 to 2007, and from the very start (since he has been using 2007), he has been getting the following message on opening the program:
"There was a problem reading one or more of your reminders. Some of the reminders may not appear."
My father tried deleting all the reminders, then he tried using a program feature called clean switch or something, and nothing has worked.

Open WLM and in the left-hand column open Calendar. Then, go to the upper-right hand corner and click on the Options link. Scroll down to the Calendar's setting options (see below) and follow the on-screen directions to set your reminder times.

By the way, there is an announcement that reminder alerts have been discontinued by Microsoft, so you might want to take a look at this link that is posted in the Reminders section: Change how you get reminders.

Hi Friends,
I'm using Windows XP Home sp3, fully updated, and Works 2002 version 6. (I know it's an old version, but it's all I've got for now.) The Works Calendar doesn't display holidays, none at all. I can't imagine why anything called a "calendar" would be made without holidays by default, but I'm guessing this allows holidays of different countries and cultures to be set up.

Anyway, I found in the Edit menu > Add Holidays. I choose the holidays I want displayed, and click OK. But none are displayed.

I found in the Windows Works Discussion Group a recent message about adding holidays, where it was suggested that an internet search for for iCal holidays would turn up a file that could be downloaded, and imported into the calendar, that would add the holidays. But after searching and trying to download, that file turns out to be an ICS filetype which is incompatible with Windows .

So I'm hoping someone here will be able to advise me about adding Holidays to the Works Calendar? However at this point, I would even appreciate knowing about any free calendar programs which don't rely on advertising in order to be offered for free. For example, I'm hoping there's an Open Source solution.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it

The problem started when I changed my computer name.
Going into the "taskschd.msc" would give an error. It's because I changed my computer name.
The solution is to just put my name back the way I had it.
Here's an old thread that tried alternative procedures, but none worked for me.

Hello,
I am helping a friend migrate from Windows XP with old applications to a new computer Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. I am trying to make the transition simple for him, so transferring as much of the old applications as possible. The one that is kicking my behind right now is the Calendar in Microsoft Works v9. Installation of MS Works v9 on the new computer did not present any problems, so both computers have the same version.

What should have worked is to simply copy the mswkscal.wcd file from old computer to new computer. It partially worked, but not well enough to be useable. The old computer has calendar event items that go back to 2001, so there is a lot of sentimental and historical information to be preserved. There were 3 significant things that I observed.
1. The name on the calendar tab started out as "My Calendar" on both computers, but changing it did not solve any problems.
2. There are no events displayed in the calendar view screen, none at all. When I opened the "Reminders" view then there were several items listed for the current date, just like they should be shown. So the events are there somewhere, but cannot be seen. When I opened one of those items on the Reminder list, it did have the proper Recurrence information.
3. I tried an export on the old computer (both as .vcs and .ics) to import on the new computer and again ran into problems. The import on the new computer gave an error that the file was not formatted correctly (I late... Read more

A:Problem transferring MS Works Calendar

I do not know Ms Works too well but I believe it can export to an ICS file (*.ics). The Outlook.com calendar (former Windows Live Calendar) at https://calendar.live.com supports importing ICS files, so I would at least try that first and then see and decide if it would be the right time to let Works retire. To use Outlook.com calendar you need a Microsoft Account (Hotmail, Live, MSN or Outlook.com email).
Step 1: Export Works calendar as *.ics file
Step 2: Go to https://calendar.live.com, click Import:
Step 3: Select Import into a new calendar, browse to your *.ics file, click Import

For some reason there is a problem with this programme I have built (with help from Computerman) now I have transferred it to another excel file.

When I try to set a Callback Reminder (my terminology), once I have entered the details an error comes up for some reason. The programme has been tried and tested by itself and worked brilliantly but for some reason it doesn't now.

I can only print out days, weeks or months. Is there a good, free calendar that I can use and be able to import the information that I already have in the Works Calendar into that calendar?
Thanks in advance.

I would like an internet calender service that will send me unlimited reminder emails.

What happens: I will have a diary event...
I will set myself a reminder.
I will get the reminder: and I will still forget!

Much better: if I am allowed to set several reminders!

i.e. first reminder 3 days before the event, 2nd 2 days before, 3rd 1 day before and 4th 3 hours before.

This way: I won't forget!

I want the reminders sent by email.

At the moment, I use Yahoo calendar.
This does the job.
For any event you can set 2 reminders.
so what I do: create several events at the same time sending out different reminders.

Problem: creating more than one event os cumbersome and takes time.
Much better: be able to creat one event and add several reminders for that event.

Does anything like this exist out there...!!!

(Funnily enough... I have come accross something that does do this: sky.com. Not sure if you *have* to be a registered member though. And also: not sure of the reliability.)

If anyone can make any sense of my request... and knows an answer: please reply!!

Thanks.

Hi All,

I use MS Office Outlook 2007 calendar to remind me about routine things like backups, data saves, periodic tax payments etc.

Recently I have noticed that I sometimes don't get reminded about these events. When I realise that this has happened, I open the item in Outlook and find that the "Reminder" field has changed from "0 minutes" (which would give me a reminder at the time the event was set for) to "none" (which gives me no reminder at all).

Can anyone suggest why this might be happening, and how to cure it?

Thanks,

scandalxk

Hello scandalxk.

Have you a System Restore Point that you can return to PRIOR to this glitch occurring?

Did you check in Event viewer?

Type eventvwr in search and go to the windows log>application tab.

What information appears in event logs (Event Viewer)?

My PC uses Windows XP and I am using Outlook 2007. In the Calendar Section, I have recently got a "Reminder" which wont be dismissed.

When I DO click Dismiss, I get a message: Cannot turn off the reminder. You may be reminded again. Cannot locate recurrence information for this appointment.

It was an entry to do some extra cover at work that I did for some time, but I deleted a while ago, but don't understand why if the calendar entry has been deleted that the reminder has not!?!

I also sync with an iPhone which of course mirrors the calendar and I suppose at some point the iPhone HAD the calendar entry when the PC did not, but after the sync it should have been deleted to match the PC.

Is there any way I can I get rid of this reminder?

A:Solved: Outlook 2007 Calendar appointment Reminder

Hello Anewor,

Please try the following:

1. Select "Calendar" so that you are viewing the calendar
2. Near "File" at the top of the window click "View" -> "Current View" -> "All Appointments"
3. Locate the appointment that keeps generating the reminder and delete it. Outlook will promp several errors, but just click through them and the appointment should be deleted now.
4. Restart Outlook.

Hopefully this helps.

I use Windows XP Home Edition.
I installed PalmOne Desktop software on my Dell computer to be able to type addresses, appointments, etc. on the computer and have it appear on my Palm Zire m150 and vice versa. Everything always worked fine.

Then I decided to synchronize data between the Works Calendar and the Address book of my device, so I set up synchronization by following the directions in Works Task Launcher.

Now the sychronization between my Palm program and my Palm hand-held no longer works. It freezes up in the HotSync process when it is trying to synchronize the date book. I suspect the problem is with the Works Calendar addition to the mix.

Works gives no instructions on how to disable what I enabled, i.e. the Works calendar-Palm pilot connection.
I don't need or want the Works calendar and would not mind getting rid of it and all the data on it altogether, however, I can't afford to lose the Palm data.

Can you help?

Thank you,
Madelyn

In Outlook 2007 Calendar, the default reminder time is 15 minutes. That is, Outlook will remind you of each appointment 15 minutes in advance.

In Tools\Options..., I've tried to set the default reminder time to a shorter interval. But no matter what I set it to--10 minutes, 12 minutes, 5 minutes--Outlook keeps reminding me of each appointment 15 minutes in advance.

In Tools\Options..., there's a checkbox called "Default Reminder:" Whether I check it or leave it unchecked has no effect on the reminder time either--Outlook keeps reminding me of each appointment 15 minutes in advance.

Any ideas what could be happening here?

I've had a persistent problem for several months since I migrated to a new hard drive. Outlook 2010 calendar is working, but only in Active List view. Any attempt to change to Preview or Calendar view produces the error message, "Could not read the calendar." Changing from Active List to List works some of the time, but inconsistently and sometimes it will hunt for the list and offer the same "Could not read the calendar." error message. This is very frustrating as I find it difficult to manage the list view and am accustomed to seeing the calendar week view.

I have tried adding the Google calendar to Outlook but it is a duplicate of the default calendar and I can't set it as the default. Also, MS Office does not permit me to delete the default calendar.

I don't like any of the work arounds. I just want the calendar to work like it should. Research discloses no real hint of anything that works including running scanpst. Scanpst does a great job at fixing the problem by wiping the whole calendar thanks very much MS.

Sometimes, not all the time, when I click my desktop icon to open MS Works, I get an error message. It is titled "Windows - No Disk". In the body, it reads: "Exception Processing Message c 00000 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c". The Options are Cancel, Try Again, and Continue. When I click one of the options, the message disappears and Works open in the normal way.

This has been going on for a few weeks. I never saw that message before.

Although it doesn't cause any problem since I can open Works normally, I am curious to know if there is something I can or should do to get rid of it and if possibly it is a symptom of something I should know about.

Thanks, grandpaw

A:Microsoft Works Problem... Sort Of.

Here are some options:1. Assuming Works came pre-installed on the computer, then you should be able to re-install it from your restore disks. Either the disks will allow you to selectively restore just Works, or you may have to elect to restore the computer to the way it was when you first got it (from the factory). In the latter case, you will lose any application you have installed since then.2. In any event, be sure to SAVE TO DISK any documents you don't want to lose, no matter what option you use. Deleting Works should not have deleted the document files. 3. MS Word (a), and OpenOffice.org (a free alternative to Office), should be compatible with Works files but you have to do some extra steps ( for OO.o You may therefore, use either to retrieve and modify the Works files, either on his or on your own computer.(a) see conversion instructions here:http://www.av.k12.mo.us/documents/works2office.html( see the instructions for OO conversion of Works files here:http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=21448Hope this helps.Regards,John

I am working with the Microsoft Works Database program that comes with Windows XP. I am listing a number of books, their isbn's and their prices. I evidently punched a wrong button because now every time I enter a new book the price from the previous entry is automatically entered for the new book. For example, if the price for the previous book was 19.99 that is automatically entered as the price for the next book.

It's not a big problem, because I can override it by simply entering the correct price, but still it's annoying. Anyone know how I can undo this default price setting?

Thanks!

Hey there,

Hope someone can help me out having a very perplexing problem that is happening in Microsoft Works with a database that my work has been using over the years without any problems.

The only way to explain it is that, when you work on the database one day the next day some of the information disappears in the report view mode (no one is deleting it). The columns A to F seem to go missing. Now A-F are the ones containing the data I need. I dont know if makes any difference if I were to put that (missing)information back into those cells into columns from H onwards.

How can I get those missing A-F columns back?

Does anyone have any idea why they go missing periodically?

Just recently after a hardware upgrade this has started to happen. I know that the version we are using of Works is 7. Would upgrading the software help this problem?
Would appreciate anyones input greatly.

Hello, I'm not very good with computers so bare with me please

I am a university student and today when I went to open my class notes in Microsoft Works Word Processor I found nothing but a blank page. The file was still there, with the exact same name, but all the text was gone. The document contained 15 hours of lecture notes needed for an exam in 6 days, so I'm naturally pretty anxious for help. I have since turned my computer on and off. I have tried converting the file to rich text format and back, to no avail. The size of the document says a mere 16 kb now as well.

I opened the seemingly blank document with notepad, and found a bunch of jargon along with 2 interesting clues. One was very small pieces of my class notes here and there, in between the coding and jargon. The second was towards the end of the coding, where it said various random things about my HP printer. I did perform a printer test today, and was wondering if that did anything to delete or corrupt my notes.

I performed a system reset back to 5 PM (the file appeared blank at 6 PM, when it said it was last modified). The file is still blank. I have also checked through the recycle bin, nothing. I've got Windows Vista, and my computer is a Gateway Notebook, 5 months old.

These notes are very important to me and my grade in this class. I have backed up material from 3 weeks ago, but with 3 hour classes i would still be missing a lot of material >_<. Any help is much appreciated, than... Read more

I have MS Works installed on two home computers with XP SP2. Both work ok, except for one problem. When I click on the Program menu "Microsoft Works Task Launcher, and don't select a Works program within, but just close the Launcher", it keeps running as an active task in the background - and won't open when I click on the Program menu "Microsoft Works Task Launcher" again (I guess since it is already running in the background).

If I "kill" the active task, I can again get it to open by clicking on the Program menu "Microsoft Works Task Launcher".

Is there a way that I can: (1) make it stop doing this, OR (2) find the running background task for the Launcher somewhere else and open it from there?

It's a pain when I don't open a selection within the Launcher to go through the procedure above, just to get it to open again. Appreciate any suggestions - hope I have explained the situation enough to get some help. Thanks.

Frequent reader here, you guys and gals are great. Anyways, Even Google forums don't have the correct solution to sign in with another email address then return to the normal one. The problem is that with when you sign in with Google Calendar (all of a sudden) as a regular google calendar user, not an apps user, it gives a message saying Oops another Calendar has been created for... Then it disables a lot of the features. How do we get our calendars back, please help!

Thanks so much.

Hi,

I am hoping one of you experts can helping in solving my problem!

I can't remember when this issue came about but at the moment there seems to be no character spacing, in fact, each character seems to invade the others space: See Screenshot:

Do any of you know how I might go about fixing this probkem. Note that this problem only occurs with Microsoft Works 8.0.

Regards

A:Microsoft Works 8.0 character spacing problem (screenshot in post)

I don't have version 8.0-- but an older version.

Often features migrate from MSWord to Works-- so, as time goes bye MS adds some new features in order to ge us to upgrade. If that is the case here- then let me describe how I just did what you are wanting in MSWord.

Goto the Format drop-down menu and select "Font".

If the feature has been added and is in the same place- MSWord has a tab on "Font" called "Character Spacing". If it is there, then what you ae trying to do is add space between characters.

Hope that helps (Have you thought about OpenOffice? It has this and so many other features- and is free. You can set it to produce .doc files and it is a complete office product- That's what I use)

I have a Gateway Notebook (model 6020GZ) that runs Windows XP Home Edition. Microsoft Works 8 came pre-installed on the system. I recently started using the calender/reminder feature in Microsoft Works 8. It worked fine for several weeks, then I began to get the error message: Microsoft Works 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close

Details are: App Name: wkscal.exe App Ver: 8.4.623.0
Mod Name: wkscalac.dll
Mod Ver: 8.4.623.0 Offset: 00066736

I have gone to support.microsoft.com. and located the page that I believe would help me fix the problem, which they say is caused by either the mswkscal.wcd file is corrupted - or - the calendar file has reached a large size (which I don't think applies to me).

Microsoft's resolution includes removing Microsoft Works 8, running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, then re-installing Works 8.

My dilemma is I don't have a disc to reinstall. I have contacted Gateway, and they told me I needed to contact Microsoft Support. Microsoft Support tells me that since the software came pre-installed, they can't help me, and I need to contact Gateway - Do you see where this is going?

I do not want to uninstall Works 8 until I am sure I will be able to re-install it. Is there a download to re-install Works 8 or a patch that will fix the problem?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Whenever I back up MS Works Calendar, it restores in triplicate when I restore the files. What gives here?

I'm glad I can save the information, but when I restore the data, I seem to be a very busy woman!!! Everything is repeated THREE TIMES!!!

I like this program, but it has several glitches and when I start having trouble with my computer, this MS Works Calendar is the first program to show up with corrupted files. Since my calendar data is some of the most critical information I have, I don't want to use an application that is not trustworthy.

Can anyone shed some light on why this program won't perform consistantly? I would like to use it if I can get a grip on controlling it's idiosyncrosies.

Thanks for your comments.

I am running Works 8 in WinXP Home. Included in this program is Works Calendar which I have used extensively as a reminder for appointments on my desktop.

Recently, Works Calendar won't open in the Task Launcher; or, any other way. When I attempt to open I get a error message that reads;

"Works cannot access one or more files needed to run the
Calendar. The files may have been renamed, deleted or
moved. Try reinstalling Works, and then reinstalling the
program again."

I've tried reinstalling, following three different MS Knowledge Base Documents that describe how to overcome this problem, but none makes a difference.

I had a similiar problem in a earlier version of Works some years ago and finally found that I had to reinstall a file in Win98. Unfortunitly, I don't remember; or have, a copy of this file and am hopeful that someone else has encountered the same problem and knows the solution.

I have never been able to print a calendar from MS Works ver.6. I get a window showing papers dropping into a yellow folder and a message "please wait while the calendar prepares to print". It never reaches the printer. I have reloaded the software more than once to no avail. Every other printing task works fine. It is just the calendar. I have to take a screen shot, resize it and print it. This takes too much time. Can you help?

A:MS Works calendar printing

I have tried the WKpr60 fix, but it didn't work. I found if you use the "export" command under the "file" menu and save it in the html format, it will print. I now have upgraded to works 7.0 and it works fine.
