Q: Screen turns black and white and smaller!

My operating system is VistaStarter SP1, I am using a built in graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 with max. memory of 313MB. This problem occurs when I play a game called "Special Force Online" and when I maximize spider solitaire... how mysterious. It also shows in the Nvidia Control Panel. Just view the attachment or link for the sample image. hope this problem will be solved so I can avoid reinstalling my OS. Its so painful...Here's the image sample:

Computer covers whole screen with either white, or white with black, and blue stripes. Multiple times a day.?
This computer was bought in 2005, (HP Media Center PC). Within the second week this freezing(it freezes, and the screen has a white or white with black and blue stipes) occured( yes second week, my brother was uninformed and thought it was normal and didnt return it. It happened often enough as to save anything you were working on every ten to twenty minutes on a bad day. It settled and slowly became less of a problem, then stoped. One day he got a virus and had to restore the computer, the freezing started up again. same as last time, it settled then stoped, a month later, i recieved this computer as a hand me down, as my brother went to college and got a MAC. That was in mid summer of 2008, a week and a half ago, i got a huge virus, i restored my computer, and the freezing started up again, after not doing it once for over a year. It has gotten as bad as freezing every 30 minutes some nights. And earlier today it froze, i turned off and on my computer, went down stairs, and when i came back it was frozen again. I had not even used and program. Please help if you have any idea whats wrong!
Things to keep in mind...
-It only happened after the computer was restored, or bought(ish)
-Its not a normal freeze where you see the programs on the screen still, the screen goes completely white, or white with black and blue stripes.
-4 years old

A:Screen Freezes and turns white or white with stripes

Then maybe it isn't freezing at all. Maybe there's a problem with your monitor, vga cable, or video card.

Try a different monitor/cable and see if that changes anything. If it doesn't, then try reseating the video card--if any--and if that doesn't work I suggest getting a cheap one from someone's old pc at least to test with.

Installing a new video card can be complicated, but google search for a guide or follow the setup instructions for the video card to the letter and you'll have no problems.

Let us know what's going on, we love to help here... it's like an addiction, but we can stop anytime... really we can.

I'm having trouble with two of my desktops.
Desktop #1 Problem:
When all cords and such are plugged in, I press the power button. The desktop turns on for about 1-2 seconds and then restarts. The bios doesn't flash, the os doesn't boot. As far as I can tell the desktop restarts indefinitely. Any ideas what's going on here?
--Desktop Type: HP Pavilion a705W
I found someone with a similar problem here

Desktop #2 Problem:
I bought some 3M Dust Remover a few days ago. I disconnected power, along with everything else, from a desktop of mine. Pulled the cover off and started blowing the dust out of the case. I put everything back together, plugged it in, and the desktop doesn't work. It boots to a blank screen with the the power and hard drive led's stuck on, on the front of the desktop. The led on the back of the power supply turns on, I can hear the hard drive spin up, it detects the cd/dvd drives, floppy drive and then just hangs with the led's stuck on. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?
--Desktop Type: Compaq Presario S4200NX

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole new desktop.

A:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

Here is a detailed link on troubles... Read more

Try to start in BIOS and leave the Screen on, see if it shows the same problem?
You could also start up in safe mode and wait till it shows tha problem or not.
In the first option no Windows is active and therefor no software related error can occur.
In the second most applications are out of order. you could also after start and exeute MSCONFIG command unselect all unnecessary startups and restart.
It could be your videocard or driver or your screen.

My HP Pavilion G4 laptop screen is white when I turn it on. When connected to an external monitor, it works fine. Any suggestions for the cause and a solution?

View Solution.

A:Laptop Screen Turns White

If the external monitor is fine, then you know the problem is from the mother board cable connection to the screen itself.  The problem point for notebooks is where the cable goes through the hinge.  You could try to wiggle that to see if the picture changes. The other possibility is that the connection from the cable to the screen has come loose and the final solution I can think of is that the screen itself is bad.

I have a compaq computer running on windows vista home basic, I have a problem when I start the system, the desktop loads ok but then after about 30 sec the display turns white and I am unable to get the desktop back, I have restarted the system a number of times but the same thing keeps happening.
When the display turns white there is a strange message on their which you would get if you were trying to load a web-page but had no internet connection.
I have 2 users on the computer one works fine I can go in there and use the internet but the other is where I have the problem, and this is where all my work files are.

Can anyone give me any tips.

I have Windows Vista SP1, Home premium, 32 bit on my laptop and lately it has been doing a very strange thing. All of a sudden my screen goes completely white, and the only way to get rid of it is to hit the "show desktop" button on my keyboard, then right click the button that has appeared on my taskbar that says "blank page-Internet Explorer", and click "close" from the menu. Why is it doing this? Can anybody help me?

I was talking with people on about this but we never found an answer. I have ran several recommended scans, and one scan found a trojan and deleted it, however, the blank page is still happening, and with even more frequency than before.

Oh, I also tried updating my video driver (at their instruction) and I'm not positive that I did this correctly, as nothing on the list was actually called a "video" driver, and I'm not completely literate with, so I updated something like..NVDIA...or something like that.
Thank you, Karen

A few years ago, I purchased an HP 2311x monitor from a friend. About a month ago, my screen went completely white and after some troubleshooting I determined that the problem was the monitor and not the video card. I was about to put the monitor in the garage, but with three kids my budget is tight, and replacing it would put a strain on things, so I went to HP's site and read about some folks who suggested turning the monitor upside down and tapping on the top would fix it.
Surprisingly, this worked! So after about a week, when it happened again, I turned the monitor upside down a few times and my screen returned. This week when it happened, usually when the computer is unattended (maybe gone to sleep) I merely had to tilt the screen forward and the picture would come back.
Also, I noticed that the power adapter looks broken, like it is coming apart, as if my four year old child has stepped on it. I am sure that it should be replaced, and this is pretty doable for me.
One person suggested that something inside the monitor is loose and turning it upside down restores it; albeit temporarily. Should I start to save for another monitor because eventually this solution may not work anymore? Or is it possible that the problem is being caused by the adaptor that is breaking apart and I might just have to replace the power adaptor?
Thanks in advance, any insight into this issue would be appreciated.

I would post a picture but it won't show up with print screen.
So my problem is I have a inch or so of a black bar on the right side of my screen. A small copy of around a 2mm of my *normal screen, which is basically a double of that *normal section on the screen, my mouse shows up and everything. After that is maybe 5mm of more black. On the bottom of my screen below start is green and black lines for maybe 3mm. And gray and darker gray lines for the gray part of the bar. That is like a stretched version of the bottom of the screen. So my screen is smaller overall. My computer still runs fine and everything with this weird resolution. Hopefully with the description you guys can figure out my problem. I'll have to check back on this later.
*normal as in what my regular screen looks like.

Oh, and I'm using windows XP on a laptop.

Any suggestions?

Hi guys

I am having a problem deducing the issue with a friend's laptop.

It's a Toshiba Equium U400, not sure the rest of the specs are relevant.

Basically the screen ONLY works if it is angled all the way back. And it works 100% perfectly fine in this position. However, if you try to angle the screen down (in a closing direction), the screen will immediately turn white. You can then tilt the screen backwards again and press FN+F5 (shortcut for alternate display) and it will flash back to life again.

I assume that it is a cable connection issue? And would rule out faulty LCD/inverter if it works at one angle?

I have tried researching this and have only found issues where the screen turns black, not white.

I don't have my screwdrivers with me and cannot open the screen yet to check connections. I am just curious if anyone knows if this behaviour is linked to motherboard, etc.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I am using a Compaq Presario V2000 since 2006.
Win XP Home, AMD Sempron 3000+, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, 1Gb Ram.

Since the last couple months, once in a few weeks, while I am using my computer, my screen turns to what is depicted in the Image file attached here. Earlier it would fix itself in about a minute or two. Or I'd have to move or twist the screen a bit. But recently, the only fix that works is a restart. I can not see anything on the screen and thus use a keyboard shortcut for restart.

From what I have read around, its probably the Inverter (or whatever is the chip behind the screen frame where it says "Compaq") that is troubled and replacing it would fix it. But before I take it to HP and get myself ripped off, I could use some advice.

Thanks a ton and ask if there's any more info that is required.

PS: The picture does not reflect the rainbow colors because the colors are due to the background. During me clicking the picture, there was nothing running I guess.

A:Laptop Screen turns White / Rainbow

Since no one has any info here, I'll post what I learn. Might help others.

Since the backlight is working fine, it is not and Inverter or a Backlight Issue.
And I can hook it to a external monitor (when my screen is knocked out) and it works fine. Thus motherboard and video card are fine as well.

That leaves us with the LCD wiring / cable and the Panel in itself.
I have decided to wait for a few days before I take it to a tech because I do not move the panel at all and it seems to be stable for now.

Will update.

Hi everybody,

I've been having issues getting games to run full screen. I do not mean that they are running windowed, so alt-enter does not do anything. The game screens are centered and surrounded by black borders. It is the SIZE of the screens that isn't where I want it to be, not the resolution.

Each game seems to have its own screen size. Everything using DOSBox is 7.5", Diablo 2 is 9.5", and Galactic Civilization 2 is 12". My screen size is 14". The only games that stay full screen are anything ran on an emulator. The desktop is untouched and full screen with my resolution set to 1024 x 768. Changing the resolution in control settings>display>settings does nothing at all to the games I'm trying to play as far as I can tell.

And I literally JUST solved my problem, but I will continue to post this thread b/c I have read a lot of these with the same error occurring with answers that did not solve my problem.

On my computer (using Windows XP) all I had to do was go into Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced then click on the tab that should have the title of your graphics card (mine was Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver), then choose Graphics Properties, and finally choose Full Screen (No Border) as opposed to Center Desktop.

I never changed this, so something I downloaded or ran must have altered this setting.

Hope this helps!

A:Games won't run full screen. They are smaller, centered, and have black borders.

A:Lenovo Laptop Screen Turns White Upon Boot?

Hmm sounds like you may have a monitor problem mate - can you get into safe mode?? if you can run these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

NB SFC best run for about three runs

if no go then do these
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If one is running Kaspersky security it may rant about ADW - just ignore it or disable Kaspersky while the ADW is being used)

One last thing try leaving the battery out unplug form the power source and hold down the power button for around 10-20 seconds and then power up again.

Bit of a long story but here I go.

I have 2 Radeon 6950 with the crossfire thing set up, it's been working well for over 2 years.

Over the last few weeks I've been having issues, mostly while watching videos (usually HD and/or full screen). The video will freeze, the audio will loop, then eventually the screen goes black and I get an error message saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered".
Sometimes it didn't recover and I have to turn the computer off.

What's now happening is it will freeze at the windows start up. Then after resetting I will get to windows in very very low resolution and in black and white.

So I 're-seated' the cards. I couldn't notice any obvious damage to it except the fans were very dusty so I cleaned them.
Boot it up and I still get the black and white.
I checked the device manager and it said one of the cards was having problems, I uninstalled both drivers from that menu (not quite sure if I should have done this) and for whatever reason it's now working.

However it now seems one of my cards is not being recognised. Only one display adapter is shown in the device manager and AMD catalyst only recognises one card too.

What's the best course of action to determine what's wrong with what card (still not quite sure which one it is).

My Laptop screen had been working perfectly for months. Then out of the blue It started to get washed out white.
I do not know how long this has been happening or when it started but I just noticed it recently on a trip.
I use my Acer Laptop as a work PC so it's generally plugged into a Monitor. I was traveling & I brought it
with me. I turned it on & all seemed normal. The 4 flying Win7 colors did there dance as the system started to boot up.
Then I'd see the "Login" screen for a second or 2 then Bam, the screen went white out of nowhere! I thought I was the
victim of some kind of "white-screen-of death". The Laptop is barely a year old. Then I noticed if I tilted the screen
all the way forward I could make out the Login screen icon & window. I typed my password & it continued to boot up.
Now my desktop was normal with all the colors correct. I figured it was a weird glitch, a 1 time thing. After about
20-30 second the screen when white again! Now there was no way to get it back to normal. I could see everything on my
desktop in the faded white washed out background. I ended up doing emails in that condition. it sucked.
-I've tried rebooting 5x times. Same thing happens
-I've check & installed all latest Windows Updates.
-I did Virus & malware scan 2x with nothing dangerous found.

Yes, you've got a few malware entries in there (a CoolWebSearch hijack, and a couple of trojans), though it's not going to be easy to remedy without seeing the complete HJT log. Can you possibly copy the log to floppy and then post it from the other computer?

What's the Windows OS?
eg. Is it Windows 2000 sp4? Or is it WinXP Pro sp2?

What version of HijackThis is it? v1.99.1 is the latest version.
Is HijackThis.exe running from a permanent folder, and not from within a zip file in a Temp folder?
This is important. Make sure HijackThis.exe is installed in eg.
C:\Program Files\HijackThis

I have a Dell Inspiron and it seems that they are the worst that have the problems. It is a vista and a year and a half old. Before it died/crashed it would turn black. In the light i could still see the programs running and it just faded the screen. I tried setting the hibernation to never and turning off screen to never but it still fades to that same blackness. I cant even see properly through it and i cant do anything to turn it back to it was before.

I rebooted it to the factory edition but it still does the same thing. Please help!

I know this might sound silly, but were you running off the battery and now maybe the battery is running low, if this is the case the screen will become black after the battery gets too low.
Just a thought.

Alright, today I hibernated my computer (I usually hibernate) left it for an hour and attempted to turn it back on, now it loads fine but once it gets to the point where it should display the vista logo and then the log in screen the screen goes blank. The hard disk light is blinking fast so fast it's almost just staying on and the wireless does its blinking patterns as if it's redying the wireless connection but the screen remains black. I've tried safe mode, same result. Two screens, same result. I booted Ubuntu and it was fine so I'm using that now.

First of all, any insight into how I should go about fixing this?
If not, I have extremely important files on the hard drive is there any way you could recommend getting them back?

Thanks for any help, I'd hate to have to take it in and risk the guys at the store deciding it's easier just to wipe the hard drive or something.

A:Screen turns black before reaching the login screen

Are you using a Ubuntu Live CD, or are you dual booting?
If you're dual booting, you can access your ntfs partition from Ubuntu using steps listed on many many web sites:
Some are easier than others.

As for fixing your Vista. I have reservations because in some of my steps Vista has this nasty habit of overwriting the master boot record with its own without warning you (making you unable to boot into ubuntu if you dual boot), so research some more, and proceed with caution. If you boot into the Vista DVD, I think you can click repair, and you have a bunch of options and it looks like this:
I haven't tried them in a while so I can't really recall what each does.
You can try going back using a restore point. Be VERY cautious with "Startup Repair". I think that's the one that rewrites the master boot record. (if you really need to try it, research how you can backup the master boot record in ubuntu, then restore it if needed - usually a flash drive, a floppy, or a bootable CD may be needed - you most likely would be able to do it from the live cd if you know the steps though).
And if all else fails, do a repair install. Can't recall how it's done, but there are many sites dedicated to that topic. You can also ask around the forum about it.

Hi, I've been having this problem. When I start my computer, the whole screen is white for awhile, then it turns black. There is no windows startup logo or my computer brand logo. Then my screen starts flashing and the power button on my monitor blinks and the monitor makes TOK sounds every 2 seconds and then the screen flashes and starts doing that over and over until it decides to make the whole screen white and stay like that. Here's what it looks like:
I tried manually restarting my computer by holding the power button and after a few tries, sometimes, if I'm lucky, it will let me login and then everything is fine.
Today, I went through this process and today I tried turning off the monitor when the screen was white. It restarted and black flashing but made the screen turn white faster. I just kept trying, turning the monitor off and on again because I didn't know what to do. Then I was so lucky, the login page for windows came up and I was able to login; now everything is normal. I can go online and everything without any problems until I shut down my computer and start it up again. Then it's back to square one.
Can anyone help me fix this problem? Should I buy a new monitor? I've had this one for a few years, but my desktop is new; It's one year old in 3 days. (April. 4)
Thanks in advance!

I have a brand new HP Pavilion with a touch screen. Out of the box I noticed there was a white speck on the screen which I couldn't wipe off. When I turned the screen on the speck appears to be black. The speck returns to white when the screen is on, but displaying something dark. This seems to me to be strange behavior for a dead pixel, but I don't know anything about the new touch screens.  I found a 'dead pixel test' online, and against red and green backgrounds the speck appeared black, while the test would indicate that it should appear white were it so.  I think that the speck seems to be 'above' the rest of the screen slightly. Does anyone know what this is?

I am new to this site and in need of some assistance. I am running windows 7 home premium. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD560. i was on my computer the other day and noticed that it started to run slow. I restarted it and worked a bit faster. after about another hour of surfing and running different programs the screen went from color to black and white. i have tried to uninstall the video driver and reinstalled (which exagerated my screen icons and indows) but no changes to the color. i saw soe forums where they suggest replacing the video card. but i dont know if that is the issue. I am also using a samsung tv as a monitor. when i change the tv to tv mode i get color. i can also print in color. please help. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

howdy folks.

this is the second time we've had this problem, and i know it's from some kind of malware, but i don't know how to find out what. spybot s&d and adaware do not remove it. neither does defender. neither does symantec corporate. last time, i ended up formatting my hard drive and starting over, but i don't want to do that again!

here's the problem: computer boots up fine, windows (XP PRO SP2) loads fine. the display is beautiful and all is well, until suddenly, after a brief moment, maybe 10 seconds after windows loads, the display suddenly switches to black and white, except the icons are still in color. but they act funky if you hover over them or click on them.

i just read in another post about the "hack this" analyzer. i will try downloading it tonight and post the log here afterwards. in the mean time, i was wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior and might already know the fix.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

Ok so, im trying to help my friend with her broken computer.
She got hit with the avsoft virus, It took me a while but I finally got malwarebytes on her system, and had to rename the .exe in order to get it to run in safemode and it seemed to have worked pretty well, i then wanted to boot it in normal mode and run a full scan to make sure we got everything.
Anyway, we were experimenting with it for whatever reason (i guess malware removal had us feeling brave) and we unhooked her monitor, and plugged her desktop computer via the monitor cord into my laptop. i know that you can plug a monitor into a laptop and use that instead of the laptop screen, so we wanted to see if it would work with the desktop instead of the monitor. You know, like use my laptop as the monitor and keyboard.
I went into the my laptops nvidia control panel and messed around with some of the settings
All of a sudden my laptop screen went black.
I just rebooted, and my laptop was fine but when we plugged her monitor back into her desktop and rebooted it would not reboot correctly.

The lights on the computer would turn on, you can hear it is running, the fans are running, it makes one beep, just like a normal startup. the screen displays a logo (not the windows logo) an everex logo for a few seconds, and then some text comes up (like normally) and looks like it proceeds to load but it flies by so quick you cant read it, and then nothing. I am using Windows 8 on my laptop. If I connect my laptop to a video projector and left it idle for about 4 minutes, the screen turns black. So I am trying to avoid this. Here is what I did so far. First I found that for Windows 8, the option of presentation setting is not available in Control panel -> Windows Mobility Center (Fig. 1).

Next I looked for the screen saver and found that I have not activated it at all. Also the (Fig. 2)

Next I tried to Change the power setting by going to Control panel -> Change power setting -> Change when to turn off the display and set all of the as Never (Fig. 3)

I still got the black screen after doing these. Finally I noticed that after I left my laptop idle for about 4 minutes, it says "maintenance is in progress" in the "Action center". After searching through web, I found that an easy way to stop this maintenance during my presentation. I disconnected from the wireless internet temporary when giving a presentation. I tested this and after disconnecting from internet there will be no "maintenance is in progress".

However, the screen still turns black during presentation, even after disconnecting from the internet. Any help will be appreciated.

Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.

Formatting, Installing some files, then it goes to the part where it prepares the installation and it says something like 39 minutes left. Its still fine there, buh when it goes down to around 34 minutes. My screen turns black and it just dies there. I tried turning on and off my monitor, no luck. Cap lock and Num Lock arent working at all. Fan stops and disc stops spinning.

These are the things i have tried:
1. Tried re-installing, re-formatting many many times
2. Low-level format my hard drive
3. checked my hard drive many times
4. Resetted my BIOS

Please if anyone out there has had the same problem and knows how to solve it. Please help me. Thank you very much.

Try taking out your graphics card, if your xp disc is SP1 try SP2.
The 34 minutes is the installing devices section.
Its the graphics card it is may now be dead..or you can try using the onboard gfx just to pass installation..

Try another card/onboard and clean the agp slot with compressed air.

Hey Tech Support Guy's users,

Yesterday, I got back to my house, and went on the computer for a short while, then while looking on the internet, my Inspiron 1525's screen died on me. Not only my main screen, but also my other monitors as well, saying there was no signal. I was assuming that it is a dying Video Card, but I wanted to have more insight regarding my question. Is my fear correct, or it is the drivers? I haven't updated my drivers since 4 months ago, so I doubt it is my drivers.

Any who, if you need more information from me, please ask away and I will respond as quickly as possible.

P.s. I wasn't do sure if I was suppose to put it on Hardware or Window 7 section. Felt like, it could be a window 7 error.

Hi guys,

Basically as the title suggests, when I turn on my PC it powers up, I hear fans spinning yet my screen will stay black. To add to this when it stays blank my keyboard also does not light up.

So far the only way for me to access my PC is to turn it off and on a few times, usually including completely disconnecting it from the power for a short while.

PC Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)
AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor
GeForce GTX 760
8.00 GB RAM
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V 610W Power Supply

Rocca ISKU Illuminated Gaming Keyboard
Rocca XTD Gaming Mouse
(First time having a gaming mouse/keyboard so I was not sure if maybe they caused problems, sucked extra power etc..)

I'm not too experienced with the ins and outs of computers but all I can think is maybe my PSU is not giving enough power (though I get no warning beeps), my Keyboard might be the issue? I hope you guys can help. I've thought, maybe do I need to update the BIOS? If so how do I do that?

A:PC Turns on BUT my screen is still black/blank?

Is this a new build that will not post or has it been running then developed a problem?

Have you tried disconnecting ALL drives [both hd and optical] removing any usb device ie printer, scanner, hub, etc and then pw ON? See if the mb will reliably complete POST. If it does complete post a few times, then start connecting devices one at a time until you find the failed part. If it does not complete POST in the above config, then you will need to start swapping parts with known good units; start with the pw supply.

Next post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb installed, exact ram installed, etc. Note 8gig of ram does not really tell us much; 8gig of corsair 123xxx, tells us a lot more.

If you can get the system to post, enter the bios or uefi and post the following info; cpu temp, system temp, 12V, 5V, and 3.3V values.

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... Hello all,

This is my first post here, so please excuse me if I have created this thread in the wrong place. For quite some time (perhaps about two-three months) my screen has been flickering and turning black at random times. Sometimes my screen will be fine for a few days in a row, and then it might flicker for a few minutes and eventually just turn black. Usually what I do is turn it off and on a few times and eventually it returns normal. The thing is, I know it is still turned on because my music player will still operate, and it is a lighter shade of black, meaning I can still faintly see what was on my screen. Further, I initially thought it was an issue related to my charger being wrecked, but I have since replaced this and the problem persists. My guess is that it is some sort of virus, which I am basing on my quick reading of some other websites where others have reported similar problems. I'm really not a tech whiz, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Any input will be highly appreciated.

A:Screen flickers and turns black

I'm not very well versed in this area, but it does sound like a case of a faulty monitor since your programs run as per normal during those flickers.. You might wish to post more details on your specs and age of your hardware.
Have you tried replacing the monitor for testing?

With windows 7 x64

I have seen many questions answered about this but I feel like I have slight different problem. Many of these issues have been solved by downloading or buying a windows 7 recovery disc. My problem is obviously from the start up, I get the black screen with the blinking cursor. Windows shut down on me the other night as it looked to be preparing to download an update and after it did 1 update, it went to restart and failed to load windows. I cannot press F8 and get to the recovery menu. Now I have a Dell Inspiron 17R N7110. One thing I have found different from the normal windows 7 recovery disc is that it does not include the option "Windows Complete PC Restore" where the "System Image Recovery" is. I don't think I used this to restore the PC the one time that I did it. I believe I used the option at the bottom of the dell recovery partition named "Dell Backup and Recovery Manager". But being unable to get into the advance start up options with F8, I cannot access the Dell recovery manager. So I used the windows 7 recovery disc that I burned with my other computer which is not a dell and the options do not work. I cannot system restore, and when it does work, it still wont boot. There are no problems with the start up repair. The temperatures are normal. The diagnostic test available from the boot options menu verified that all my hardware worked properly and even everything says my OS boot up is working ... Read more

I'm working on a friend's computer, I dunno what he did... I probably don't want to know what he did, but it is irrelevent. It's an Acer Extensa 5620, Costco special, nothing special here. henever the computer boots up it boots up to a completely black screen, the only thing there is the white cursor. Now I assumed this was a "screen hide" virus kind of like the icon hider, but I'm completely lost here. Usually you can get around something like that by starting in safe mode, well not this one. I've tried starting up in safe mode and I get the same result. I've also tried going through the setup screen, but nothing there seems out of place. I can't really run anything, or do -anything-. So really anything would be helpful. Basically
Push power button,
computer turns on to Acer screen with the option to "press F2 to enter setup",
then you get a black screen with "windows did not resume properly last time it was shut down blah blah blah safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt or start windows normally" if you choose a safe mode you get the "files loading" screen which details all the start up files, if you click "start windows normally" you get the little green loading bar.
After the loading process is complete the white cursor shows up and everything is black.

Have you tried to boot the computer into safe mode? You can press the F8 button right after you hit the F2 button and choose an option like safe mode with networking or last know good configuration.

My computer won't load...when you turn the computer on all you get is a black screen with a white blinking line in the corner. Even if you press f8 while you're booting, it still does the same thing and it just makes the beeping sound. It does say that SMART failure is imminent, does this mean my hard drive has failed and need replacement?

when in safe mode is the screen normal? If so, sounds like it could be problem with the graphics driver/card. Is it a separate card or chip on the motherboard. Have you tried updating the driver.

I am running Windows 7. I picked up the FBI virus and thought I removed it with Malwarebytes and CCleaner.
Here's what's happening now.
If I attempt to start Windows normally --- the screen turns black with an active white arrow where the sign in screen should be.
I get the same black screen when I try to enter in safe mode or safe mode with networking.
F8 allows me to access Repair Your Computer.
The startup repair does not detect anything.
When I run a System Restore it gives me an error that I couldn't load C (0x8000ffff)
Anyone have ANY idea how I can fix this issue working with what I have going on?

Dear sir or madam,

I have been having some problems with me dell inspiron 6400, running windows vista.

Recently someone dropped it.

I turned it on, but only a black screen loaded with a white cursor after the green progress bar screen
I then turned it on using safe mode and it loaded fine. I then turned it back on in normal mode and it worked.

However, after doing this process twice, now i am unable to even load safe mode.

I have tried to reinstall factory defaults, but i have been unsuccessful in trying to use both ctrl f11 or f8, (found these form google searching)

Is there any other way to restore factory defaults without the disc on my system, or do you know what might be wrong with it?

Thank you very much in advance.

I'm not sure what went wrong with my pc this morning. It started normally but then went to a black screen. I still have the cursor and I can move it, but everything else is gone.
I don't know all the details of my pc I just know its an older Dell, nothing fancy about it, basic box stock 3yrs ago. I tried unplugging my video card and just using the integrated one, but it does the same thing.
Can anyone help?

My Windows 7 has stopped working

All I get after the bios starts up is a blank (black) screen and a white cursor.

I do not have a Windows 7 recovery disk and only a Windows Vista one. If I re-intsall Windows Vista I assume I will lose everything off my partition.

Can you tell me if I can fix my Windows 7 installation

If not can you tell me a way of not losing some sentimentally valuable files?

i've been noticing some very strange things going on with my XP. When the system would start up, it could randomly do 1 of 3 things:

Load all the drivers(windows booting screen) and then turn white, and freeze, requiring a restart if you plan to use the computer
Load all the drivers and then turn black and freeze, requiring a restart if you plan to use the computer
Load all the drivers, and perform a correct start up (logon and all)
if it loads correctly, the system would run fine, but on rare occasions, it might suddenly restart, VPU recover (i have an ATI, and it only happened when i was crunching BOINC Wu's) or suddenly freeze.

I figured it was my ATI driver, knowing how crappy ati drivers were, and uninstalled the ati chipset driver and Catalyst. Only, when i restarted to reinstall the ATi driver, the same thing happened with the WSOD. now, i think it may be the graphics card itself. i found no other problems with my system, except for that problem. No Malware at all, i ran scans with Norton, MalwareBytes, Spybot, Trend Micro, MSE, and bitdefender (Trend Micro and Bitdefender were online scanners) any guesses?

So I was running through westfall on my gnome mage (ALT) and bumped into a much lower level ripper, as usual frost nova and keep running! But my system crashed, couldn't alt + tab or clsoe the program. Rebooted my computer which I have own for approx 5 months and it reads the motherboard fine then goes onto this black screen with a white flashing underscore. IF you leave it long enough it moves to another screen within the bios asking you what state you want to boot windows up in. None of my keyboard buttons work on this page and when the timer runs from 30 to 0 instead of booting up it just crash's...

Once i got a step further and I was on the XP loading screen but it never loaded.

A:Black screen white cursor (Help please)

Black screen errors are very difficult to diagnose and fix.  Even more so since it won't get into Windows at any point.
What happens when you tap F8 during startup - can you get into Safe Mode?
If so, backup your stuff from there.
If not, you can slave your hard drive to another computer and copy the data over from there.
You can also backup from the command prompt if you're comfortable working at the command line
Windows doesn't automatically set restore points as they take up a fair amount of hard drive space.
You have to tell it to do it.
I'd suggest that you concentrate on backing up your data.
And once that is done, wipe the hard drive clean and start over with a fresh install of Windows.
Good luck!

A:Black screen with white cursor after log in

B_S2 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Since it works OK in safe mode, then it's SOMETHING that is being loaded at startup that is trashing the display.  Could be a runtime program; could be drivers, could be a Service. No easy way to tell. Boot into safe mode, enter MSCONFIG in the start area.  When that opens, disable ALL the start items. Reboot. If the PC now works, it's one (or more) of those items -- and you have to go through a tedious process of re-enabling them one at a time until the PC fails again.  The last one you re-enabled was the problem. Here's a tutorial on how to do this: If the PC still does not run right with all the startup items disabled, then go back into msconfig and select the Services tab.  Check the box to hide the MS services.  Then, disable the upper half of the Services.  Reboot. If problem is fixed, then you have to go through a tedious process of re-enabling one Service at a time until you find the one that is the problem. If the problem is not fixed, then disable the other half of the services.  Repeat as above. No easy way to do this ...Good Luck

So I'm trying to help a person I work with whose computer's been having problems. I've come across several problems in the past and always been able to fix whatever software/hardware issues I've had. So I figured I'd help. Her problem however is something I've never seen before, and just recently read about.

First things first, she's using Windows Vista Premium 64-bit edition.
Her computers problem: After boot menu it goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor.
She said it was fine one day, not the next. Some business did something or whatever and it stopped working. Whatever the case, it's not working now.

This problem from what I've read is caused by several different things.
1.) Computer not waking from sleep/hibernate mode.
2.) Software issues or faulty hardware
3.) Possibly a issue with the Bios.

The most likely causing the issue seems to me like it would be software. Her Bio's are fine and I reset them to normal.
Her hard drive is working because it gets to the boot menu at least before failing to enter windows.
So the most likely choice causing this is software. Right? I mean, that's the only thing I can see causing it. I also tried putting her computer into safe mode..... then realized it didn't even seem to have a safe mode. Does that version of windows support safe mode? No keys said enter safe mode and the typical F8 didn't work.

She doesn't have a windows CD because apparently it never came with her computer when she bought it. And she has a lot of ... Read more

I have a laptop with a touchscreen and almost a year after buying it I would get black places with vertical white stripes on the screen. Sometimes they took up the whole screen, sometimes they were only an inch thick. They always seemed to be changing in size quickly and were always the full length of the screen. A computer mechanic said it was a short in the screen. It happened especially when I tilted the screen.

I sent it in under warranty and they replaced the LCD and updated the BIOS. Less than a week later it is starting to do it again just a little but it seems like it will get worse.

I do a lot of MS office for school and my sister plays the Sims 3 and free tv sites (but she doesn't download anything).

I have this strange error of B&W2 doing flickers every 2 or so minutes, the "when it does it" time is unstable anyway so I can't explain in great detail.

The screen flickers, it will make a freeze and then it goes black for 2 seconds or sometimes even more, then it will freeze and go black and again until it stops or I do a "Control+Alt+Supr" command. Then the problem gets back again.

I have tried a lot of fixes possible, for instance, I have tried to change the Nvidia control panel, thinking it was the antialias or anisotropic and such, but no, none of them are the problem. Not even VSync, Triple Buffer, Threaded Optimization or any other feature. So this isn't probably Nvidia's fault, but I'm not sure.

I tried to do "Compatibility" run, from Windows 7, to Windows XP, none changed anything. "Running as admin" and even some like "Disable visual themes" too, but still flickers.

My system can handle BW2 very easily, but why is it so unstable?! Can anyone please find a fix for this?

Of course, these are my specs;

Windows 7 64-bit
Nvidia GTX 285
Intel Q8400 Quad Core 2.66GHz
4GB of RAM

Yes, it has the latest drivers. Yes, I have the latest DirectX. My system does not overheat, GPU goes at 90c as average, which is fine until it reaches 105c

Hi guys,

I'm having some trouble with my computer and I'm hoping someone can help, it is a Dell system 8400 with a pentium 4, 3GHz Processor and 512Mb RAM. Basically I was working away on my computer and I think I got the "blue screen of death". I thought the computer would be OK if I restarted it but now it just turns on and goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. I have looked around on the internet and can see this is a problem quite a few people have had.

Now when I turn the computer on I have the options of pressing F2 or F12.

F2 allows me to enter setup which is a menu with a blue screen with options such as 'System', 'Drives', 'Onboard Devices' etc.

F12 allows me to enter the 'boot menu' where the options are:
* Onboard SATA harddrive
* Onboard USB or CD-Rom drive
* System Setup
* Hard Drive Diagnostics
* Boot to utility partition

I think I know what caused me to get this problem. I was trying to obtain data files, however the website I was on told me to run a setup of a program. I was dubious about this as when I double clicked the setup file, the first install page was in Spanish and I couldn't understand it, I pressed the icon which looked like a piece of paper as I thought that might be the option to change the language and that is what caused the blue screen to occur.

Also I would like to retrieve files off the hard drive if it turns out that I need to reinstall windows. Thanks for your time.

A:XP: Black screen, white cursor..... Help!!!!

hi Watto, press F2 to enter set up and look in 'Drives' to see if your hard drive is recognised. If it is, then go to F12 and run hard drive diagnostics. You can also go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download their own diagnostics which have to be burned to disk as a .iso (not just copied to disk). Now as for retrieving files, you could take the hard drive out of the computer, place it in a usb caddy and attach to a working computer via usb to see if you can retrieve the files. Before trying this however I would see if the drive is recognised in your BIOS. When you got the blue screen you mention did you see any error messages? Be grateful if you could post back to let us know your progress.

my desktop screen goes black/blank all of a sudden like it's in sleep mode ( the power doesn't actually turn off at any point and there's nothing i can do to turn it back on except use the power button on the tower). if there is sound at the moment of the crash then it just loops rapidly again and again to infinity.

i first dusted the tower and thought that was it since there was a huge amount of dust inside and after doing it worked fine for almost 2 days when it started doing the same thing again. the fastest it crashes is when i tried to play WoW (only a few minutes) and play youtube videos (10+ min). my graphics card is a geforce 210 512mb and i've had it for about a year, worked fine all this time. when i took it out last time it was really hot, i'm not sure how hot it's supposed to be but it burned my fingers more or less.

i have the same system and components, i play the same games and run the same apps as i did before when it was working well ( i am not sure if i had any crashes of this sort in the past but i believe it did happen once or twice over at least a year). i don't play and high end graph games or anything that needs a better card.

i use vista 64 on a intel quad [email protected] with 6gb.

do you think it's the graphics card or something else? what can i do to find out? Thanks for help!
