Volume Control Won't Work

Q: Volume Control Won't Work

My computer is an HP a1213w. The sound randomly stopped working while watching a YouTube video. The box claims there are no mixers available. I checked to see if my sound card is working properly; it is. I was told to make sure it was on automatic and push start, and I did all that even though it was already done. The speaker icon isn't on the toolbar. iTunes and MySpace music won't play. I have Windows XP. Sorry for any mistakes. THANKS! I have now realized how much I appreciate my hearing...

A: Volume Control Won't Work

You may have a corrupt driver.
Go to the Control Panel & double click the System icon
Click on the Hardware tab
Open the device manager
uninstall the sound device
restart the unit to let it reinstall
if that doesn't work download the driver from the manufacturers web site & install it.

sorry about the lack of caps, i'm holding a slice of pizza with my left hand.

I have just bought a Acer laptop. The model, as it says on my laptop, Aspire 4752-6838.

The problem is that my fn hotkeys do not work for raising and lowering the volume or muting or playing. That would be fn + up, fn + down, and fn + f8, respectively.

Interestingly enough, my fn hotkeys work for other functions like num lock, brightness. Im not sure about my other fn keys working, but i dont have a need for them, so i dont care. However i really want to use my fn hotkeys for volume control.

Is there any way to enable this? Or does any one know where this problem arises and a solution?

BTW i read the manual and it doesn't help me with my problem. I also tried searching google and found no help either. If anyone knows where else i can look, that would help too.

A:My fn hotkeys do not work for volume control

Take it back to where you bought it and have them take a look. It could be a faulty keyboard. What version of Windows are you running? Have you run Windows update till no more updates are found?

I have always been a fond user of multimedia keyboard/mouse controls, particularly volume control. Unfortunately, ever since I got a new audio card (Creative SB X-Fi) in order to use digital surround sound (SPDIF DTS encoding >>> amplifier), muting still works, however, volume control doesn't change anything.

Now I am aware of all the arguments that you can't change digital output volume, however, i know this CAN be done. I have done this myself in two ways, firstly, by changing the EQ level in the Creative volume mixer, and more intruigingly, by changing Creative's "What U Hear" level in the recording tab of the control panel sound controls pane.

Ideally, I would like keyboard volume controls to adjust the "What U Hear" level, however volume control only changes the default PLAYBACK device, and "What U Hear" is a RECORDING device.

So here is my Question:

How do you configure volume controls to adjust the "What U Hear" level? Alternatively, can digital volume control be achieved in another way?

I'm sure this can be done by changing a registry key associating volume +/- and default device, but no luck so far. If anyone can help or has another method for control digital volume I would be much appreciated.

PS. I am not interested in using my amp's remote for volume so please don't suggest that.

A:Creative X-Fi digital volume control. Help, I KNOW this can work!!!

Unless you are a programmer and can create a program to do this specific task, I don't see a way around it. The S/PDIF doesn't use the sound card or at least the parts of it that can be controlled by the usual methods.

What you are hearing in the PC speakers is being generated by the PC's sound card, after the digital section so that is two different functions.

It looks like, to me, that "you can't get there from here".

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and I have all my sound drivers installed (I can get sound just fine in every app), but I can't control the main volume in the Volume Control. I can adjust the volume with the Wave slider, but the main one doesn't do anything, including mute. Individual applications' volume controls work fine too, just not the main Windows one. It wouldn't be a problem, but it might be the reason why I'm not getting any volume on the Stereo Mix recording option. I just finished a clean install of XP (for a different reason) and it wasn't working before, either. Any ideas?

In the Control Panel, click on Sound and Audio Devices Properties, then on the Hardware tab. Select your Audio device and click on Properties. In the window that opens, at the bottom, make sure the device is Enabled. If it already is, you can try updating or reinstalling your sound card driver.

A:Tecra P5 - Volume control doesn’t work properly

As far as I know volume control in the past was mechanical but now it works on different way and it is controlled by specific tool/utility.
To be honest Tecra P5 is not known to me but obviously it is Australian notebook model and according to Australian support page this notebook model is not supported for Windows 7.

That doesn?t mean you cannot use it but this means there is not software package designed for Windows 7 that can be installed so I think there is no much you can do about it.

I know it is annoying but for volume control you can use Windows option placed in task bar.

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 7 on my notebook PC. I had to use a Microsoft installation disk because unfortunately, serious errors resulted after I installed from the HP recovery program. Consequently the HP drivers that were installed automatically with the recovery program weren't installed on my system. I had to install several of them from the HP support site. I got everything to work except for the Touch volume control, or the Volume Scroll Zone as referred to by HP in the service guide. This is the device located just above the keyboard that increases or decreases speaker volume when you drag you finger on it. I installed the Quick Launch button driver but that only applied to the mouse and pointer touchpad. I looked at the devices listed in my startup configuration. I saw the synaptics pointing device and the HP quick launch buttons listed. So is the IDT PC audio driver.  What am I missing? Where I can I find it to activate the touch volume control?

I already uninstalled and installed the driver several times from the CD and I downloaded it and installed it too and the problem persists.

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

Hello :)
I hope I put this in the right area..

I've been searching for a solution to this volume problem for a while now, but to no avail. I've found others with a similar problem, but no solution. So here's the deal: I just got a new motherboard, and ever since I got it my volume control has been faulty. First of all, all sounds are very quiet, even when all volume sliders are set to maximum. Next the main volme control has no effect whatsoever on the volume of the computer. I can can slide it all the way to the top, or all the way to the bottom, nothing changes. The only thing that makes any difference is the Wave control and it barely does anything. Also, when I put "Mute all"...it doesn't mute. However when I put mute for Wave control, no sound comes out.
All this is incredibly annoying because I often listen to music on my computer, but now I basically can't hear it. To note: I don't have a volume control on my keyboard, or on my speakers, and I know nothing is wrong with the speakers.

If anyone could help, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks :)

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

Do you have any other soundcard-like devices like a USB headset?
Do you have the latest drivers for your soundcard installed? Please check the motherboard maker's website.
Did you get some special program with the motherboard drivers that would give you more control over sound than the Windows standard volume utility?

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19295458.aspx
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/18112824/18235810.aspx#18235810

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

Also(obviously) go into control panel, and mess with things from there. Also, do you have any errors with any sound drivers of any kind? i know if....kind of nuke some of mine(stupid me) with an anti-adware program....if you have that could be part of the prob, and those usually aren't to hard to fix, just take a little time.

Hi everyone,

I noticed the volume of my music was not as loud as it was in the past when playing CD's or MP3 files with Windows Media Player 10. I had the volume turned all the way up in Media player and also in Realtek HD Audio Manager, but the sound was just not anywhere near as loud as it was before. I recently un-installed "Discover stream hub / Discover.exe" and thought that this might have had something to do with it, but that does not seem to be the case.

I decided to try to play an mp3 file with Realplayer and found that with the volume turned up in realplayer, the mp3 files sounded normal again, plenty of volume.

What surprised me is that if I close Realplayer with it's volume control turned up, then open the MP3 with Medial player, it will sound normal in media player, (plenty of volume). If I turn the volume control in Real player all the way down, close it, then play a file with Media Player, there will be no sound at all.

Somehow, the volume control for Realplayer is effecting and overriding the volume control for Media Player. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how this might be happening ? Has anyone else ever experienced this type of thing ?

It's not a big deal now that I found out what was going on, but tracking down problems like this can drive you nuts. It seems crazy that the volume control from one program would control the other, I'm just wondering what might be going on. I'm using Windows XP Media Center Ed... Read more

A:Real Player volume control also controls Media Player Volume ?

Hi John

The reason that this happens is that when you change the volume in real player, it changes the 'Wave' volume for the whole system. I don't pretend to know too much about this but basically, real player changes part of the system volume which also affects the volume in media player. To see this for yourself, open Real Player and then go into Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices under control panel. Click on Advanced Volume Controls under the 'See Also' heading on the left. There should be a column labelled 'Wave'. If you now change the volume in Real Player, you will see this changing also. As a result, it changes the volume system wide. Hope this solves your confusion.

I'm running Windows 8.1 64bits.

I have noticed since a couple of days ago that my Control+Tab shortcut does not work anymore. Not on text editors, not on web browsers, not on property pages, nowhere.

Control+Shift+Tab (reverse tab navigation) still works.

I have checked the results on an application called "Ethervane ActiveHotkeys". In there, it states that Control+Shift+Tab is not an active hotkey but that Control+Tab IS. I assume that some application decided to globally pick up Control+Tab for itself.

I have tried restarting (and testing as quickly as possible before all programs load), I have tried closing down all applications that the task manager will let me and still the shortcut does not work.

I tried going to msconfig and disabling all programs and non-Microsoft services with no luck, but if I start Windows 8 in Safe Mode then Control+Tab works again.

I tried running Hotkey Commander; it shows Control+Tab as being bound by some application, but does not show which application it is. If I delete/disable the hotkey binding from inside Hotkey Commander then it works again until I restart.

I'm stumped as to how to troubleshoot this further and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You could try doing a system restore to a point just prior to doing the

Start > Control Panel > Sounds and audio devices (If you are in category view, then first click Sounds, Speech and Audio devices, then Sounds and audio devices) > Check the box marked "Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar". Then click ok.

I had recently bought a new computer, really nice and all. There was one problem though--when I played songs the vocals didn't play, only the background music. When this happened I freaked out until after just messing with the Volume Control a little bit I was able to fix it. Now that it's fixed I realized how much fun I could have singing to CDs without having the vocals! (yes I'm weird I would enjoy that) How do I change it back to the way it was? I've tried muting random things but it doesn't seem to do anything. In fact the only thing on the Volume Control that seems to do anything is "Wave" and the master control all the way to the left. I remember when I first looked at it a few of the other ones were muted. Anyone have any idea about what I'm talking about?

I was cleaning up some unused programs and windows options and somehow deleted the volume icon on the task bar. I can still adjust the volume using the control panel but when I click add icon to the taskbar it won't add it. How can I get it back? Windows XP.

A:volume control

First make sure its not in the system tray, and not just hidden since windows auto-hides icons after a while. I know its stupid, but got to ask cause i've been asked similar before and all it was, was windows auto-hiding it

If its not that, goto the task manager and under "processes" look for sndvol32.exe. (or just Sndvol.exe)

If its not there goto Start > Run then type "msconfig" and hit enter. Under the start up tab, check if sndvol32.exe (Sndvol.exe) is in there and that it is ticked.

If it is not, then go back to task manager, goto applications tab, and hit "New Task..."

then type in "c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe"
or "c:\windows\system32\sndvol.exe"

If it then appears, then the easiest step now is to create a shortcut to the file location you entered in and put this shortcut in
"c:\windows\start menu\programs\start up\"
and this should start it everytime you start windows.

If however you enter in either file location and it can't find them, then they are missing or damaged and is what is causing the missing volume icon. To repair this you'll need to extract the file from your windows CD to your windows\system32\ folder.

Hopefully this helps you. This is presuming your using windows volume control. Some use different ones, mine uses realteks instead so the above wouldn't work the same in my case.

Hello i came across this forum and thought maybe someone would be able to help me. i have some speakers i need to control the volume with a remote control instead of the knob on the speaker itself. Below is a list of hardward i would be using with the box.

That i Have Now:

DirecTV HD/DVR Box connected by HDMI to my TV

Bose Companion 2 Series II - PC multimedia speakers connected by 3.5mm Jack to my TV.
I dont like this because the sound is low and not the best. I have plug the speakers direct to the directv box and the sound is dramatically improved, the only problem is i can no longer control the volume using the remote. i have to use the knob on the speakers which makes it very inconvinent.

I had an idea for a simple volume control box that i think would be easy enough to make (if i knew what i needed). I put together a mock up to kinda of show you what i think would solve my problem. Do you you think it is possible? Anyways your input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi again, Hoping I can get some help with this other problem. The icon for volume control has disappeared from my lower right hand area. I used to be able to adjust volume from there but now I can't. I went to Control Panel /Sounds and Audio Devices/Volume but when I click on Place an Icon I get a message saying:
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control Program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

I didn't ever consciously remove the program so I don't understand this. How can I get it back? I don't have it on any disk. Thanks for any advice.

If you still have the original OS CD (win XP install disc), put in in your primary cd drive, goto the startmenu, click run. type in cmd and click ok(brings you to the dos prompt). now type in "sfc /scannow". this checks and recopy's original system files that were installed with XP. It won't delete any files it just makes sure all the original files are in tack and how they should be. Good luck.

I am having some problems with my Volume Control on the taskbar. When the Desktop or most programs are being used, it works rapidly and normally.
However, when I am surfing the Web and wish to adjust the volume of short videos (trailers, streaming, etc.) or audio, it either does not work at all or becomes extremely slow in opening for adjustment. Most of the time the video or audio is over before it finally decides to open and allow adjustment. I have never experienced this problem before so have no idea of how to troubleshoot it. All I know for sure is that it didn't act this way in the past. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

What would happen if I max all five settings; will it make my speaker louder?

A:Volume control

If you mean the SW Synth and Input Monitor levels that are currently at minimum or muted, then no, increasing or unmuting these won't alter the volume of your speakers.

SW Synth sets the level of sounds created when something is playing the soundcard's software synthesiser ("Soundblaster" type music in some mostly older games), Input Monitor is mostly used to allow you to also hear your own voice when using a headset.

This is a problem I'm having on Windows XP. When you go to the volume icon and go to turn the volume up higher or lower, you simply get the XP exclamation sound and it pops back down to the middle. The slider simply will not stay up or down.

This is on my mother's computer and she's very hard of hearing so she has to have her volume turned up very high. I have no idea what could be causing this problem - it started doing this a day or two ago and I have not changed any settings or installed any new programs in at least a month. Rebooting doesn't work at all.

Hi and welcome

A few things you can try.

1. Do a System Restore and roll the computer back to a date before the problem started.

2. Right click on the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, then click properties, customize. Scroll down to the Volume icon and click it. Check to see if it is set to always hide, if so change it to hide when inactive or always show. then go to control panel, sounds and audio devices and check the box that says "place volume icon in the task bar". If you have reinstalled the audio drivers this should work.

Or 3. Alternatively this file could be damaged Sndvol32.exe. Check this page for more info:

Hello all. I have a Gateway MX6455 laptop, with Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP2. I was disabling some services and I seem to have disabled one that I would like to enable again, but I can't find it.

Typically, when I change the volume (on this laptop, it's FN + PGUP/PGDN), a large, neon green volume bar appears on the bottom showing how high the volume is, much like on a TV. But now, when I change the volume, I don't see the bar, so I'm not sure how high or low the volume is.

The volume control works, I just can't see what level the volume is at. This is probably something I could deal with or get used to, but it'd be nice to get it back if possible. Does anyone have any idea what process controls the on-screen volume level? Thanks in advance!

Hi. . .

Look in msconfig for un-checked boxes.
START | run | type msconfig

Look under start-up first, then services. If a service needs to be re-enabled go into services.msc.

I would say it is most likely a Gateway program as some laptops have the green horizontal volume bar and others don't.

A:volume control

Basically what you need to do is to reinstall the sound card driver again.
So head -on to manufacturer web site ( of the sound card) and download the latest driver and install it.
If you have a OEM PC ( as in Dell, Gateway, HP etc....) go to there web site and download the driver and install it.
And windows is looking on the win98 cd because that's what windows does ...
On the other hand if can check the Device Manager and the Sound card is listed without any yellow question marks then in Control Panel under multimedia should be able to see a checkbox which will " put an icon in the system tray" which might need to be checked.

then that will fix my problem.
Thank you. And yes, everything is plugged in
and powered up. Thank you.

A:Wave volume control...

the simple way is to click on the speaker icon next to the clock.

or control panel >> hardware and sound >> sound >> adjust system volume

depending on your sound card (or chip), you may have an extra set of controls somewhere in your start-menu.

do you know what sound card you have? and are you sure you have the latest drivers downloaded from the manufacturer. sometimes windows update can help find drivers.

Hey,
My computers changes its volume by holding the FN key and then numbers 3 or 4, which i really hate. For some reason when im playing a game and i try to change the volume it will lag and ill press it and then 2 minutes later it will finally change volumes. Ive tried this on different games and they all do the same thing, however when im watching videos or something it works fine. Is there a program that lets you change your volume with hotkeys or something? This would REALLY help me out a lot.

-Thanks

I have a Dell Laptop and whenever i try to turn up volume. The volume bar will automatically move down by itself. I never seen this before. I reinstalled sound drivers and its still doing same thing. Im running Windows 2000.

A:Volume control will not stay up....

Are you using a docking station?

If so, it's a feature of Windows 2000 to reset the sound options. Otherwise when connecting a non-amplified laptop to a docking station with an amplified sound system, and the volume set to maximum it could damage the sound chip and/or speakers. There is no workaround I know of.

Why doesn't my volume control have a "mixer" option and how can i make one be there. I really need one because i use my laptop to watch tv/movies as i'm going to sleep but i also use it as an alarm clock and its a pain in the neck to turn the volume way up on my speakers then turn the VLC volume down to like 5% so whenever my alarm clock opens foobar the music plays loud enough to wake me up.

I'm running Windows XP Home SP3
i do have a mixer through the realtek hd audio controller but the only options there are to control cd volume and master volume.

A:windows xp volume control

Go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio/Volume

I am having a problem.. My Master Volume Control automatically goes back to 0 after i move it to 100 %. The volume has been working fine up until today. I have tried newest drivers for my sound card, tried new mouse, and have tried a new keyboard. I even tried different Operating Systems, (Win98,2K,and XP) all operating systems act the same. Seems like no matter which operating system I install all the master volume contols act the same..(I set it at 100% and it automatically goes back to 0 where i have no sound. Any and all help is appreciated.
Thank You.

It seems that whenever I play Far Cry, I am unable to raise or lower the volume of my speakers, until I exit to Windows. I have a Microsoft Wireless Multimedia keyboard that has the volume control right on the keyboard. I have a Soundblaster Live! 5.1 soundcard and 5.1 speaker system. I can control the volume in the game when I am using headphones but not through the speakers. It only happens when I play Farcry, and I don't think this happened before the game's latest patch. Not a big issue, but would like to be able to fix it, if possible. Thanks.
