Lenovo installed software making laptops vulnerable to hacking

Q: Lenovo installed software making laptops vulnerable to hacking

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Lenovo Group Ltd, the world's largest PC maker, had pre-installed a virus-like software on laptops that makes the devices more vulnerable to hacking, cybersecurity experts said on Thursday.
Users reported as early as last June that a program called Superfish pre-installed by Lenovo on consumer laptops was 'adware', or software that automatically displays adverts.
Robert Graham, CEO of U.S.-based security research firm Errata Security, said Superfish was malicious software that hijacks and throws open encrypted connections, paving the way for hackers to also commandeer these connections and eavesdrop, in what is known as a man-in-the-middle attack.

Hi!

I got an iPod for X-Mas and I just downloaded iTunes on my work and home laptop computers. Something is wrong because since then both computers make a very loud noise when I load a CD. It still reads it though but the noise and the vibration are definitely not normal...it seems to be related to iTunes. I searched on-line and read that it could be related to GEARAspiWDM.sys which is installed automatically with iTunes...? I looked for it on my computer and didn't seem to find it...and anyway I'd rather have someone's advice before removing a system file. Any clue?

Thank you and Happy New Year!!!

More than 700,000 ADSL routers provided to customers by ISPs around the world contain serious flaws that allow remote hackers to take control of them. Most of the routers have a directory traversal flaw in a firmware component called webproc.cgi that allows hackers to extract sensitive configuration data, including administrative credentials. The flaw isnt new and has been reported by multiple researchers since 2011 in various router models...The directory traversal vulnerability can be used by unauthenticated attackers to extract a sensitive file called config.xml, which is on most of the affected routers and contains their configuration settings. The file also contains the password hashes for the administrator and other accounts on the device; the username and password for the users ISP connection (PPPoE); the client and server credentials for the TR-069 remote management protocol used by some ISPs; and the password for the configured wireless network, if the device has Wi-Fi capabilities...700,000 routers given to customers by ISPs are vulnerable to hacking

utorrent and some games make use of portforwarding and i'd like to know if that would leave my computer vulnerable to attacks...

A:Does port forwarding leave my computer vulnerable to hacking?

yes and no.
yes in that data on that port from ANY source goes directly to your system.
no in that your firewall can still filter which sources are actually allowed.
also no in that if your software is not running, then the inbound traffic arrives at
your system but goes nowhere (ie just gets dropped).

so the real issue will be 'how good is the software you are using on that port?'

I suggest, no one can really tell

Johnson & Johnson is telling patients that it has learned of a security vulnerability in one of its insulin pumps that a hacker could exploit to overdose diabetic patients with insulin, though it describes the risk as low. Medical device experts said they believe it was the first time a manufacturer had issued such a warning to patients about a cyber vulnerability, a hot topic in the industry following revelations last month about possible bugs in pacemakers and defibrillators. J&J executives told Reuters they knew of no examples of attempted hacking attacks on the device, the J&J Animas OneTouch Ping insulin pump. The company is nonetheless warning customers and providing advice on how to fix the problem. "The probability of unauthorized access to the OneTouch Ping system is extremely low," the company said in letters sent on Monday to doctors and about 114,000 patients who use the device in the United States and Canada.ArticleEDIT: Moved o general Chat

Android users are advised to use a different browser until Google patches the vulnerability.

Hackers have found a new way to hack your Android smartphone and remotely gain total control of it, even if your device is running the most up-to-date version of the Android operating system. Security researcher Guang Gong recently discovered a critical zero-day exploit in the latest version of Chrome for Android that allows an attacker to gain full administrative access to the victim's phone and works on every version of Android OS. The exploit leverages a vulnerability in JavaScript v8 engine, which comes pre-installed on almost all (Millions) modern and updated Android phones.   All the attacker needs to do is tricking a victim to visit a website that contains malicious exploit code from Chrome browser. Once the victim accessed the site, the vulnerability in Chrome is exploited to install any malware application without user interaction, allowing hackers to gain remotely full control of the victim’s phone. Also Read: This Malware Can Delete and Replace Your Entire Chrome Browser with a lookalikeChrome Zero-day Exploit leaves MILLIONS of Android devices vulnerable to Remote Hacking

Just brought my Windows 7 (Home) laptop home from the tech.  Apparently it was infected with malware that corrupted/deleted a number of drivers.

Machine's working fine now ... but the tech recommended I delete and permanently stop using Waterfox, Scrivener, Rhapsody.  In fact, he went on to say, most of the other programs I work with regularly may be similarly dangerous -- even if I deleted them completely and reinstalled them.  I should also never bank or shop online.

I've been using Windows daily since 3.1.  I do lots of things, but none are weird or shady.  Admttedly, I've run into a few problems, but they are far from a common occurrence.  I'd never heard recommendations anywhere close to these before.

Are such recommended restrictions The New Normal?

Hi, Everyone,

Just got my new Windows 7 64-Bit Pro desktop last month, but I noticed that its hibernation feature doesn't function like my laptop!

What's worse, tech support tells me that given my hardware (apparently, it's a motherboard issue), it's actually impossible to configure my desktop's hibernation to behave like it does on my laptop!

So, two questions, please:

1. How can I get my desktop to hibernate like my laptop? That is, have it save my session to disk and shut off completely, resuming only when I power it on again (IOW, I do not want "hybrid sleep")??

2. Why did Microsoft think to do things this way?? Why take away such behavior for desktops -- it's obviously something programmed into Windows 7 already; why have hibernate disabled for desktops, replaced with hybrid sleep??

Please note that I am not interested in turning off my mouse and keyboard -- I do like using "sleep" when I'm on the computer all day! It's just that when I expect to not use my machine for another whole day I'd like to save my session but have the desktop off, drawing absolutely no power (and, more to the point, not have vibrations wake up the computer)....

Thanks in advance for any advice!

A:Making Windows 7 Desktops Hibernate Like Laptops

Shutting off your desktop completely for a day or so won't hurt your computer at all, and will save on your power bill. Most of us completely power off our towers, even if we won't be using them until the next day. Besides, if the system was built properly, a fresh boot won't take much longer, if any, than resuming from hibernation.

That being said, this isn't an issue to be blaming Microsoft for. I know that's the typical practice...but the problem, if any, lies with your motherboard's BIOS and how the power options are set, or what options are available. Microsoft can only work with the hardware options it is given. I would read through your motherboard manual to find out what's possible and what's not.

I just want to post a warning here from my own experience about Lenovo laptops, I originally got one for Christmas in 2012 and about 4 months after getting it, I had to take it to Geek Squad at Best Buy so they could fix the Hard Drive and Motherboard, later on in the year I had an issue with Lenovo software on my computer and then had to go about spending $60 to order Recovery Disks to fix that issue and then about 6-7 months later I was starting to have problems with the charger wanting to go out and not work and that cost me $60 to buy a universal charger for it and shortly after buying a new charger I was starting to have issues with the graphics card wanting to crash every hour or so and afterwards I finally just said to hell with it and ordered a new laptop and gave this one to a friend and earlier this week he came to me and asked me to help him fix it for him because he lost everything on it and I told him I would just put a fresh install of Windows on it and as I started to install Windows 7 it just started shutting off on its own and then told him to just buy a new laptop because that was just something that couldn't be fixed, so I figured I would just give everyone that warning about Lenovo computers, they don't last long and they always end up with problems

Windowsreport.com recently published an article titled..."10 best anti-hacking software for Windows 10"...
and I was very surprised by what was Included ,and absent from this list....

For the full article, and the reasons for their selection please visit the above link, but for the purpose of this poll I will list the software that they selected..

Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection
Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit
Anti-Hacker
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
McAfee Security Scan Plus
Spybot Search & Destroy ? free edition
HitmanPro
Trojan Remover
SUPERAntiSpyware
Reason Core Security

The Poll asks you to select which of these software YOU think SHOULD NOT have been Included in a top 10 of Anti-Hacking software...

Which Software should be removed from this 10?
Which Software should have been Included ,that was not?

A:Are these the 10 best Anti-Hacking Software?

What on earth is "Anti-Hacking"?
What is "Anti-Hacker"?
McAfee Security Scan Plus, really? It's almost a PUP.
S&D was really good back then, now less.
Same for SAS.
Never used Trojan Remover.
Reason Core Security have a good online glossary, but I didn't see anything amazing about their product so far.

Edit: And Reimage Repair didn't even make their list? I don't get it, apparently, they recommend it, even though it's a known PUP.

Hi,

I get very nervous when I think someone has hacked into my computer.

I keep asking around if there's some kind of software that will notify me if someone is indeed trying to hack into (or already has) my computer.

No one ever seems to come up with anything. Everyone always blames it on ad/spyware, but the things that happen in my computer make me think it's not just that.

Anyone?

I'll even hire someone to look for me (assuming I trust them & they are very good), but just sitting here waiting on a forum for someone to help me on my computer which takes days/weeks & sometimes months, scares me.

Any help would be appreciated. I've already got a thread happening at another forum & it's almost been 3 days with no response & something that happened today made me think maybe someone is out there posting on forums as me. (don't know if that's true or the forum moderators are just lying/being drama queens).

Thanks a ton

I work in a corporate IT environment and have recently noticed alot of our 64 bit laptops are blue screening due to iaStor.sys (Intel Rapid storage technology driver - x64)

I have been able to do the basic analyzing but It would be a great help if anyone could follow this up and let me know if there is anything else causing this as I have removed the driver and installed a new one but it still appears to be blue screening

I have attached a zip folder with mini dumps attached (Couldn't get the SF Diagnostics tool working)

This question was hard to google since it is a little complex to to type out the question but I don't think may be too difficult to answer.

The question is this:

Will performance speed be different

if I have a setup of WinXP(Home or Pro) in a HDD with no software installed in it and a separate HDD with all apps/software installed on a separate HDD

OR

if I have a setup of WinXP(Home or Pro) in a HDD with all the apps/software installed on that HDD? (The extra HDD would be separate for music, pics, docs, etc)

I never had this problem before until recently I noticed that my fan was making this loud buzzing noise. It was bearable at first. I thought that the fan might be dusty inside because I haven't cleaned it ever since I bought it. Last week, I tried to open the laptop so I can check why it is making that loud noise. I saw that the fan was dirty. I tried cleaning it. When I turned on my laptop, it was still making that loud buzzing noise. So I just ignored it. After a week, It suddenly got louder. It didn't sound normal anymore. I tried restarting the laptop but it still makes that noise. Its annoying. I took a video so you can hear what my fan is making.  It just keeps doing like this even if my laptop is just on stanby, like I'm not doing anything with it. This is what it sounds like when I did the Dust Removal tool on Energy Management.   Since I kept using the Dust Removal tool.. Now its making this weird noise, like the fan is getting stuck on something. I don't know what to do anymore. Its been 2 years since I bought this laptop so I don't have anymore warranty and I never had problems with my laptop except for today. I have never dropped it so I don't know why this is happening to my laptop. Please help me.

A:Lenovo Y510P fan making really loud noise.

Hi there, Xbelleh -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

This video would leave me to believe that a piece of paper or other debris shifted inside and is now coming in contact with the fan blades.

When you use the dedusting cycle the debris is temporarily being blown out of the way of the blades.  What I would do is use a can of compressed air and blow out the fan assembly from both directions and see what is blown out.  Compress air is available at any office supply store, electronics store or big box discount store.  When using the compressed air use short bursts as an extended burst may damage the fan's bearings from over revving.

Also, when using the laptop take note of its position.  If the fan is quiet on a flat surface, but is noisy when sitting at an angle like on your lap.  That might be a good indication that the fan bearings are failing.

Worst case scenario is you need a fan replacement.  The fan is something that the owner can replace if you are comfortable working inside it.

As a do-it-yourself project it can be fixed in an afternoon. At this point I would try the compress air and we'll go from there.

Update us how it goes.

The noise started coming about a week ago. It wasn't that loud, but I would sometimes hear a vibrating sound coming from the fan of my Lenovo G555. Sometimes it would stop. But if I ever moved it, the vibrating noise would come back. But today, the noise got really loud and it wouldn't stop this time unless I shut it down or something. Why is this? Is there any solutions to get this fixed, too?

I got a Lenovo X201 on Friday and on Saturday I set about backing up the recovery partition onto a usb stick. I inserted an 8gb usb stick and let it do it's thing.  After plugging the stick into the machine and trying to boot from it to test it works I got a message saying No Windows, or in other word the usb stick was not bootable. After reading some forum messages one suggestion was the stick had to be formatted in fat32.  Fortunately I didn't just format it and try again as when I went back into the recovery partition backup software it gave me a rude message saying you have done a backup once so you are not allowed to do it again. To me this seems quite pointless as I cannot see for what purpose I would want to use the Lenovo recovery partition other than on my computer but I assume it is something to do with a licensing restriction. In any event after quite a substantial bit of my reading, of which there was nothing really on point, I stumbled across this thread and the message by the_solutor: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X100e-Make-bootable-usb-stick-of-recovery-CD/t... It correctly gave me the idea of using the Windows 7 bootable usb creator http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool to create a bootable usb, delete all files from it apart from the couple of boot files in the root then copy over to it the files the Lenovo partition backup program put on my other usb stick.  After doing this I am t... Recently, I have noticed a strange and painful sound coming from my laptop.  http://picosong.com/xWC6/ ^ This is the sound I am speaking of. It is usually louder than this in the beginning when I first start my laptop, but I recorded this a few minutes after that. I'm not a tech guy, I don't know much about computers. It makes this sound whether it's plugged in or not. Sometimes I can't hear it, but if I tilt my laptop up a little bit, it starts again, but I can't hear it when I put it down (this isn't always the case, I can hear it most of the time while my laptop is on a flat surface). Any advice or suggestions to how to fix this or what the problem may be would be great. I put my headphones in the jack today and heard a weird background noise. When I removed them, the computer speakers were making a loud buzzing noise as well.  The buzzing noise comes and goes and disappears if I mute the computer's volume.  I cannot hear any audio on my computer now (no music, videos, noise at start up/shut down, etc.). I have tried updating the sound drivers and restarting the computer several times, but to no avail.  I have also tried to get sound with and without external speakers attached, with and without headphones in, etc. and I can only occassionally get the loud buzzing noise which is coming directly from both of the speaker vents on the bottom of the computer.  Thoughts on a solution?

I do notice that the forum rules said no not post questions about hacking.. but hopefully they meant not to ask about how to hack?.. i feel like my question is a legit help thread..

So someone has been repeatedly getting access into my hotmail and facebook accounts. I tried switching to Gmail but they got into it as well. The only account that deters them seems to be my school's email account.
I've changed my passwords/secret answers many, many times, each time more impossible to guess than the previous, (I also did not tell anyone or write it down anywhere) but each time (FIVE times now) they seems to be able to get into my account at will.
I got my accounts back before by sending a resetting link to my school email, but this time I could not do it for my FB account.
THEY ALSO hacked TWO OF MY FRIEND's accounts, who do not share a network or computer with me!!!

When I spoke to the hacker he/she said they wanted to get back at me for something but I don't know what, nor would they tell me.. Personal issues (or a lack of) aside, they are really good at what they are doing!!
They are already sending some fake emails to my friends.. its really convincing as well.. so I'm afraid that it's going to get worse!..

What software(s) did you guys use to create a photo slideshow with music, both in PC and MAC?

A:Software for making slideshow

Photstory3, Irfanview, FastStone Image Viewer, Nero PhotoShow, Roxio MyDVD, Ulead CD & DVD PictureShow 4, Windows Movie Maker, any other competent editor, Picasa3, Corel Photo Album/Media One.

Some of those mentioned make just a slideshow, some make a video slideshow, some the video slideshow and author DVD.

For the MAC I think its basicly the iDVD stuff that comes with it.

Hi All

I have recorded some CDs (of my own music) that I want to put onto my computer and sort (as I have various recordings of some songs and I want to find the best one's and delete the rest). I don't want to take up alot of space on my computer (as it's a family computer and everyone uses it for various things) so i'm looking for some software that will burn the songs from the CD into MP3 format onto my hard drive.

I have tried CDEX. But this will burn about 25% of the CD and will then say there is a problem and Windows needs to shut it down. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it does the same. I have also tried other CDs to see if it's just mine, but still the same problem.

If anyone has any ideas then I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

I've had a hard time making up my mind lately whether I want to switch from XP x64, which is real nice and fast, and Vista Basic x64. I chose Basic since I dont run Aero or media center anyway and it really saves on resouces.

The problem has been that I have been picking some motherboards that are not compatable with Vista. It's like, when Vista first came out, nobody mentioned that, besides all of the hardware requirements you had to have, your motherboard needs to be compatable also.

I've already been burned once when I bought an ABIT KV-85 board a month ago. Their tech assured me it was compatable. It wasn't, and I had all kinds of problems. It's on it's way back to the factory now for some kind of replacement, hopefully.

Next I bought an MSI board, the K8MM3-V, that the vendor assured me would work with Vista. I never got around to offcially checking on that but it didn't matter, because after I installed it, it was dead on arrival. So I sent it back to MSI and basically had to beg them to send me another one without charging me any extra money. Long story there. But basically what I ended up with was, since they don't make these boards new anymore is a refurbished K8MM3-V. Wow, lucky me!

At this point, just to cover myself, I also went ahead and ordered my old standby brand, an ASUS K8V-MX. I should add, at this point, that the reason I keep ordering all of these older Socket 754 motherboards is that allows me to continue to u... Read more

Let's say I will take an image, it's going to probably be a couple of gigabytes! I put it on my external HD, and then what? Let's say my comp doesn't boot up anymore, it gets to a stage and it freezes! How do I load everything back up? I had a factory restore utility, but I guess I deleted the portion somehow, and it doesn't start anymore! So I found out already, that I need to make an IMAGE! Hi me know nothing about how to program but I still have questions regarding the development of software programs. Like what's the best programming language you could use for Windows and then doing an identical port or whatever it's called to Linux? And at the same time aiming for efficiency and lower-end-PC compatibility.

I read about BitTorrent and these are my thoughts on the subject:

1. Python-based application written by Bram Cohen,
as far as I know Python works equally well on both Windows as in Linux. So not much porting work to be done here, right?Click to expand...

2. java-based clients like Azureus.
Can be demanding on the PC hardware. As I see it you will loose a lot of users based on this factor.Click to expand...

3. C++ applications in the form of BitComet have also spun off from the original client.
Is C/C++ based programs a good way to start porting to Linux?Click to expand...

In general how should a programmer start to think/plan if they want to make programs that work both on Windows and Linux, Macintosh as well for that matter. Sharing the same networks and such and not splitting up the community in different technological camps?

A:Making software for Windows & Linux?

Python, PHP, and Perl are all interpreted languages. They run more or less the same on Windows/Linux.
Java is designed for class-platform compatibility, and also works well across operating systems.

C++ can also be compiled for just about any platform, as long as you aren't using Windows-only APIs.

Hello everyone!

In the last month or so, my Presario has developed an issue with the cooling fan. Normally, it generally is in one of these states: off, running low, or running high.

I have 2 profiles built on the laptop, one for home and one for work. The work profile - no issues at all. The home profile - the fan now either runs on low or high - it never shuts off. Even if I am logged in and switching between the users - on 'work' it shuts right off, and on 'home' it instantly starts back up.

I have shut down everything in the start menu that I am comfortable shutting down and nothing seems to touch it. If I do a ctrl-alt-del and go to processes, there is virtually nothing running. As I type, I have IE, Outlook and the task manager open, with those applications taking up no more than 5% of the processor, and yet the fan spins away.

As said laptop is a Compaq Presario V2000, running XP Pro SP2. Processor is an AMD Turion 64 Mobile, 1.59 GHz. Running 896 MB RAM.

Not sure what else would be helpful...

Thanks!

-Debbie

Hi all,

First, my question: Does anyone here know of a program I can use to make ringtones out of songs I already own on CD?

Now, some explanation: In the past, I have used iTunes to purchase ringtones. It has a very intuitive and effective tool to cut the desired song into a ringtone that is as long as I want and EXACTLY the part of the song I want. Very nice, indeed. However, they only let you do it with songs you purchase from them. And most of the songs I tried to purchase are not available as ringtones for some reason.

So what I am looking for is a piece of software for Windows XP that will let me cut my song exactly the way I want to and save it as an mp3 file. Something that has fade in and fade out and a graphic representation of the song. If it lets me splice two songs together, even better (but not a must). Preferably, something that is easy to use. Nothing professional. It's just to use on my cell phone.

Thank you all in advance for your help.
Before I go, I also wanted to say that this forum is great. Keep up the fantastic job!

A:Software for making ringtones (Windows XP)

A good (and free) program to use is Audacity - found at audacity.sf.net - make sure you install the lame libraries so you can encode to MP3. It's available on all 3 major platforms.

My 2 year old laptop is starting to get sluggish so I'm wondering if I should try to do a clean install of my Home Premium Windows.

Problem is, the computer came with no disks. Also, I'm assuming that the Backup and Restore function that's built in would only give me a copy of my crap-filled hard drive contents if I "made" the backup (to an external disk, presumably) then "restored" it to my freshly formatted internal drive.......right?

So, can I make my OWN clean disks with some utility on the machine? Or do I have to BUY another copy of Win7 Home Premium? Or will Best Buy provide me with one if I take my machine in? Or will Lenovo provide one?

Sorry if some of these questions sound idiotic.....but haven't done much in the way of installations, backups OR restorations.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

As I said, the primary reason I'm considering this is because the old baby is starting to chug a bit, and it's my understanding that getting off the data, wiping the drive, then reinstalling Windows is the best way to get my computer cleaned up and fast again. If that's a bad premise.....I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Michael

I'm looking for any suggestions for a good DVD Making software that will burn HD movies. I have a HD Camcorder and my computer seems to bog down whenever I try to make a DVD using Windows DVD Maker that came with Windows 7. I'm not a big fan of Windows DVD Maker anyway, there aren't many customizing features to the program. Anyway, my hardware setup is as follows:

OS: Windows 7 Professional (32-bit)
CPU: Intel Celeron M, 1.4 Ghz, Single Core
RAM: 2.0 GB
It is a Laptop, although I'm not sure that is relevant.

I also have ffdshow codec installed, although it really isn't needed with Windows Media Player 11 installed. Any suggestions will help, I've already tried Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9, and I don't have the time to sit and learn the interface. So something somewhat simplistic would be great. Thank You.

Hi,

I would like to make a cd with Windows XP slipstreamed with SP2. I am using the information from this website:

Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows; Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 2
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

He suggests using Nero to burn the cd, but I don't have that. The burners I have available are Windows Media Player 10 and MusicMatch Jukebox 10 (full version).

Steps 4 and 5 are where I am hung up. To make the bootable CD, I have extracted the file as outlined in step 4. Can I just use MusicMatch to copy this boot file along with all the others onto the CD, or do I need some other software that will work better for the process? If there is a FREE program out there that would be better for this, please let me know!

Also, when I make this CD, I will be formatting a new drive and putting Windows XP on it. What about the drivers for my current setup, should I add them to the CD so they will install on the HD as well?

Thanks,

ThaBrudda

Hi,

I am looking for a free software that can be used to make a fairly accurate 3D model of your head and face. The program should be simple and intuitive and should be an offline one.

I have tried Autodesk 123D Catch. Its really simple, and easy but the problem arises when I start uploading the images. Since my net speed is really slow at 125 KBps, the uploading gets stuck.

I have also tried FaceGen Modeller, but their free version does not provide saving and exporting.

Faceworks from looxis is good and easy, but saved project files cannot be opened, and its not feature-filled.

Autodesk 123D Catch was the best, but since I cannot use that, can anyone suggest another best alternative program, for making a facial model out of photos easily, simply.

Hi all;
Need to ask how to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.

This is the scenario.
Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions:
OEM/Hidden partition,
C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive &
D partition: containing drivers

from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive . Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). However, for "safety reasons" i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.

Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.

ANy ideas on how to accomplish this? By the way, i am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.

I don't know if its the laptop or if it has to do with the router but it seems that Apple laptops always interfere with my wifi connection.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

I assume it has to do with the laptops because neither my brother or the roommate seem to have the problem and it only happens when they are online.

Anyone Know whats up?

Thanks All!

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

Beginning from Windows 8 Microsoft has begun moving towards cloud based software and making its own hardware. In an interview to the Seattle Times Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer indicated that Microsoft would move away from traditional software towards cloud based software delivery model as well as Microsoft would make their own hardware. Following are his related answer as well as the link:

"Q: Where do you see Microsoft's position in five years, 10 years?
A: First of all, I'd say: pre-eminent technology company. I think that in a back-looking view, people would say we were a software company. That's kind of how we were born.
I think when you look forward, our core capability will be software, (but) you'll probably think of us more as a devices-and-services company. Which is a little different. Software powers devices and software powers these cloud services, but it's a different form of delivery....
Doesn't mean we have to make every device. I don't want you to leap to that conclusion. We'll have partners who make devices with our software in it and our services built in. ... We're going to be a leader at that."

Ballmer trumpets Microsoft's 'epic year' | Business & Technology | The Seattle Times

That means a lot of drastic changes in Microsoft's policies which would impact us all. As far as I can think, according to my limited knowledge, there would be the following changes:

1- Microsoft would slowly strip down Windows from being a full ... Read more

A:Microsoft moving towards cloud based software and making hardware!

I doubt Windows will go cloud based in entirety. Unless if other competitors do that, I don't see it happening. Granted, Windows is licensed whereas android or ios isn't, but this would only happen when EVERYONE and EVERY Windows user is connected to the internet 24/7. There's that hurdle. Also, the other hurdle is how can Windows work if you're in the mountains? I find interesting that no one is thinking about Windows Phone being cloud based. I just don't see it happening. Taking the base OS and not having it natively installed on the device is like a PC with cloud based BIOS, no go and no practicality.

Office and Xbox games I do see being more cloud based. Office already is going there. Xbox games might be next.

My question I ask is where's the practicality purpose? The only thing I see is for app developers to prevent piracy, but there are better methods that don't require app streaming.

A:what is the best software for making matshita UJ-842D dvd driver region free?

Just change the dvd drive's region. Normally you can change the dvd drive up to 4or5 times before it will refuse to change regions. No software needed.

To make a long story short my Model 700-151SK had to have Win 10 reloaded. When Win 10 was reloaded I lost all the Lenovo Utility s/w that shows s/n, warranty into., checks h/w and enables you to max. out battery charge at 60% when plugged in to improve battery life. I have tried to find this s/w on Lenovo.com but all I can find is Advanced Configuration and Power Masnagement Interface (wwet020e.exe) and Lenovo Utility for Windows (wwlb090e.exe). I have installed these but can't see how to use them. How can I obtain the Lenovo s/w that originally came with my Ideapad 700?

In preparation for a possible re-install of Windows 10 (64-bit) on a Lenovo Stick 300, I attempted to download the SystemInterfaceFoundation and the LenovoSolutionCenter (32- & 64-bit).  I wanted to do this on my normal, non-Lenovo desktop, where I would save the files for later use. 1. Clicking on the direct download links gave a server error. 2. So, I attempted to mark the three files for download, and download that way.  That required the installation of the LenovoSystemBridge.  Why?  It wanted to gather all the information about my download system, which is NOT the Lenovo system of interest.  I installed it anyway. 3. OK, the download of the SystemInterfaceFoundation went fine, and then the downloads hung.  So, I "uninstalled" the LenovoSystemBridge, but that left a bunch of files in C:\Users\name\AppData\Local\Apps.  That's not what "uninstall" means to most people. 4. OK, thinking that this had to be done on the Lenovo stick, I tried the same thing (including the LenovoSystemBridge install).  Same result, except called "network error".

A:Why is it so hard to download Lenovo software???

I just got my Stick 300 last week. Solution Center prompted me to download and update to the newest version last week the first time I clicked it. Installed no problem. Today I click from the front page of the support page for it to automatically determine my system and it prompted me to download Service Bridge and that installed no problem. Then I just clicked the icon for Companion that was on the PC, which is System Interface Foundation, and that prompted me to download and install the newest version. That installed OK , BUT it is freezing when I use it. It will run the Optimize, but when I click some of the stuff on the left , it freezes so I just X out of it.  The only thing that I downloaded right from the download page was the BIOS update, and that downloaded with no problem. The other three things, as described above, I did not download from the download, page, I did them when I was prompted to.

Hi,

From all the laptops I've used so far, I've seen a built-in camera software and not the Windows 8.1 camera software.
I'm talking about software that can run on the desktop and record and take snapshots. (not full screen like the Windows 8.1 software)

I've seen a software on an HP laptop with Windows 8.1 and on an Acer laptop (forgot the softwares names), just can't find it on my laptop!

I don't know why it suddenly stopped working but now I get the message "unable to connect to database" anytime I try to run it. I searched google but I still cannot find it to download it. Please help. I'm one of the few that actually use the thing.

How do i get pre-installed software back on my system? I had Vista that came with my Vaio and it came bundled with Adobe Premier and Elements, and i want these programs back. I did a back up of my hard drive while on vista, then installed Windows 7 64bit, but cant seem to find the installation file for these programs, what would the installation file look like? Alternatively, can i download from adobe and then apply the "licence" file? Thanks in advance people.

A:pre installed software...

Look in disk management for the presence of a recovery partition.

Software should be on there. Not sure how to go about doing something with it because I never had or used one before. It may only be an image or something. Or perhaps, it may have .exe you can install from.

I loathe Dell. Not their machines but their urge to clutter them with preinstalled programs which are neigh to impossible to get rid off.

I'm trying to delete a couple of them, Corel Photo album, to name just one. And I can't.
Not via the "add/remove" facility in the control panel, not via trying to delete it directly in the program files. It will not budge. I DON'T want the program, I don't want it to be the default program for viewing photos....but it's both.

HELP!

A:Can't get rid of the pre-installed software

For starters, have you tried booting in Safe Mode (just press F8 before the Windows startup kicks in) and trying to uninstall it then?

In the game, change "display settings Resolution" to match your desktop resolution.
It is not a windows configuration. It is a setting in the game itself.
Good luck.

Hi Everybody, I am a newbie to this site and would appreciate some help. I have just taken delivery of a laptop HP DV9820EA which has Windows Vista pre-installed, I assumed it would come with a Vista disc!!
As I have never had a PC with the OS already installed, can anyone advise how to get a backup.

A:Pre installed software?

when you first turned it on it should have said to burn recovery dvds. Thats how you get your backup. In addition there is a recovery partition on your system. If you did not do this you should have that option in start - all programs - hp tools or whatever its called.

a couple of other options, you can create a backup of the system after you install your programs and settings by going to control panel - backup or you can order a backup dvd from hp.
