Failed To Load Dll, No Start Menu, Programs Wont Start, Etc

Q: Failed To Load Dll, No Start Menu, Programs Wont Start, Etc

I hope it's kosher to post a link to another post I made in the XP forum (I'm only doing this because someone suggested I do). I dont think I have a virus/malware problem, but maybe someone here will recognize it. I just finished running the a-squared command malware tool and all that it came up with was 19 cookies.

A: Failed To Load Dll, No Start Menu, Programs Wont Start, Etc

Please try using this to repair the broken registry entry that may be causing this.Download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click HERE if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

Hey. I'm just gonna copy this post I made elsewhere. I think it about follows what you guys want in a problem post. I tried to search if it was answered already, but your search wasnt working, so I gave up. Thanks in advance.

My computer recently had a bit of a meltdown and I ended up playing around a little in the Recovery Console and running a chkdsk. I also attempted to copy a file on my desktop to an external hard drive from RC but found out I couldnt and gave up.The check disk fixed a little bit (namely an error that my computer could not start because C:\Windows\system32\config\system was deleted or corrupt or something).

My computer now starts up, but when it does, I get these problems:

"1. all the icons on my desktop looks weird, and everything that's not on my desktop has no icon whatsoever

2. The "Start" button on the status bar is gone, so I cannot click "Start", then choose "Admin Tools" to do a system restore.

3. If I need to turn off the computer, I have to press the power off button because again the Start button has disappeared, also I cannot use the task manager even if I press "alt-ctl-del"."

4. When I start up my computer, I get a "failed to load dll" error.

5. I can start some programs, and peripheral devices work, but not exactly right (I have to access them from My Computer)

Devices and printers won't load. Checked the Bluetooth Services as recommended in a previous tread and it was fine. When I switch users it loads fine.

Second problem, may or may not be related.

The programs in the start menu are missing and I am unable to pin anything to the start menu or taskbar. This also works when I switch users.

Any ideas?

Hi,I have bad news for you From your log, I can see it is a lost case - game over situation already. It's clearly here that you are dealing with a File infector, and I'm pretty sure it's Virut, this on top of the other nasty malware you are dealing with. A format and reinstall is the fastest and especially the safest solution. You may want to read this why:Virut and other File infectors - Throwing in the Towel? So, I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc.. Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.Read here for instructions how to format and reinstall Windows:

Guys, I'm running Windows XP and recently when I turn on my PC it makes a single beeb and then seems to run OK.

Tonight, I was running Firefox and the system seemed to slow, before becoming completely unresponsive. I had Task Manager open at the time, however when I tried to shut Firefox down the PC started bleeping like mad and I was forced to do a hard shut down.

I waited about 1 minute and then rebooted and immedietly went into the Error log and found the following entry:

"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: StarOpen"

I tried Googling a fix with no luck and I can't find StarOpen in the Services, Apps or Program files. Nor could I find it listed in the Device Manager or the Boot-start list in msconfig.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Any ideas what this could be related to or what is causing it?

Sorry if this has already been answered/wrong place. I looked at Google but thought I double check here (since the solutions via Google seem to be refering to a different OS to mine)

First of: Windows Vista, SP2, 64 bit.

Now sometimes (and not now since I am writing this) my Keyboard/Mouse just stops working. It freezes completely and I am unable to use it and am hence required to restart the computer. This happens at random occasions but it usually involves opening some program or what not (I noticed a prominent pattern that the mouse/keyboard freezes whenever I go to measure my speed and then once the download speed bar is finished and upload is about to begin my computer freezes).

I had a look at my event viewer and noticed this:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

Now I am not sure whether this appears at the start and then once I run a program or do something (like go on the commuter then freezes (i.e. my mouse/keyboard is non-responsive) or the error message comes up after my computer freezes but any help in fixing this mouse/keyboard freezing would be very grateful.

The solution to fixing this problem I founds was to go to Registry editor and change the Start D word from 1 to 4 (but I noticed some saying to delete it completely and yet other sources to change it from 1 to 0 and yet even others to change something that I don't even have under that folder). Here is the message from the event log:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

I realized some of these are not Windows 7 related but most are. While the computer "works", I do experience frequent reboots and freezes. Perhaps some of these driver loading failures are part of the cause of my issues. I do have another recent thread here regarding system crashes so I'll leave that alone in this post.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7, or a Repair Install would a better first option.

You will have to reinstall the third-party drivers again yourself from their website.

I recently had to install a new battery for my computer. After doing so I started having this problem and receiving the following Error from the "Service Control Manager" Event ID:7026   The following Boot-Start or System-Start driver(s)

had to press the power button to power off my computer. Also, at "START-UP", I get as far as a black screen with a white flashing cursor in upper left-hand corner. At this point I am stuck, nothing takes me out of this state unless I press the "POWER"

I've looked around the internet for anyone who had a problem like this but
i havent found a single forum anywhere that helps so..

I run 64-bit windows vista and recently i downloaded Grand Chase to it.
The first day it worked just fine but today after experiencing some heavy lag
spikes,i restarted my computer and when i tried to open grandchase from the
desktop shortcut(Ran as administer)The desktop just froze. So i tried running it from
the start menu but it did the same, only when i tried to click anything in the start menu
after trying to run Grand Chase,it just gave me a "bing" sound. The only solution to unfreezing
the two is to log off and back onto my computer but Grand Chase still wont work.

I dont think it's the game itself but rather my computer, since i had this same issue before
with yahoo messenger but i cant remember what i did,if anything,to fix it but Yahoo messenger
works just fine now..System restore is out of the question, since the last checkpoint it's made was
sometime in 2011 which i used once before and was basically restored back to a horrible point where
i had alot of viruses and things ran extremely slow with no norton security or anything to help it..

Anybody have some ideas..?I'm able to reinstall the game via safe mode but when i go back to
normal mode it's the same story retold from point A.

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk, I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. So I have the Classic Shell start menu replacement program (fantastic by the way), and it just occurred to me. Is it possible to have a menu on the right pane, instead of adding a scroll arrow on the bottom when there's too many items to fit on a screen, behave like the All Programs menu and automatically throw the other items into a second column? Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Just moved to Windows 7.

We're told over and over that the new start menu is better in every conceivable way, but the truth is, for a keyboard oriented power user like me, it truly sucks. At least, the default setup, and all the customizations I've attempted, truly suck swamp water.

In XP, I configured all my programs to be accessible in 3 keypresses. Eg. by putting Notepad under Start > Tools > Notepad, I could bring it up in a split second by pressing Windows Key, T, N - likewise for the ~20 other programs I have. I've had this for 8 years and it's ingrained in my style, but more importantly, it is genuinely highly efficient.

I've tried my darndest in W7 to recreate this. However several things are in the way:

1) After the windows key, the Search box has the focus. So no matter what you type in, it isn't shortcutting through the programs menu, it's typing in a search query.

2) I can't seem to create my own top level menus under the start menu (like "tools", "office" etc).

3) The All Programs link doesn't open up a menu with sub menus etc - just lists them in a single list. Maybe typical users prefer this (fair enough) but it's brain damagingly irritating for a power user, as you lose all sense of hierarchy and location.

Can anyone suggest how I could recreate my old XP behavior in W7?

Thanks for any help.

A:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Hi, I've been at this for about 2 weeks now and still haven't gotten any closer to finding a solution, it seems that alot of people have experienced this problem by reading thru this forum and others and also results from google.

Here is my problem, I start my windows xp and it loads fine at first and then gets into loading the desktop and then nothing happens, but just before that a RUNDLL message pops up and says: rvbc1.dll: access is denied, you can click ok or the x on the top right corner, after that the menu dissapears and nothing happens. No desktop icons or start menu loads. Actually the start menu you can kinda see flash for about 1/2 a second.

I've tried many solutions, I'm in fact working with another guy from and haven't gotten anywhere with it. I've run hijackthis and combofix to no avail. I think a virus has locked out the system. I don't know what else to do or try. please help! I would like to get my Outlook files out of there so if things fail, i can at least keep my business running. thanks in advance for any help.

My Desktop, Taskbar and Start Menu do not load.. The computer on startup
gets to the username password screen fine and then fails to load Desktop,

Using Ctrl-Alt-Del I can get Task Manager to load, and get online by getting Chrome to start. I?ve tried to start Explorer.exe from task manager and it doesn't start. Then I've downloaded it
and run it, and lo and behold, the Desktop, Taskbar and Start Menu all appear, but when I reboot they fail to load.

I've tried to boot using last good configuration to no avail. I've run
chkdsk and scannow to no avail. I use Avast free virus software and
Malwarebytes and have run full scans today.

I have a Windows XP disk for a Dell Latitude, but this computer is not a Dell Latitude, rather it is a desktop built by a guy in town. It does have an authentic version of Windows on it, and I could get a disk from him if need be.

So I have had an issue that has slowly been growing over time. However it has gotten to the point where its just plain annoying to deal with, so I am hoping that there is some fix for whatever the cause of this issue is.

The issue is when I try to launch any .exe from the start menu, weather it be games or an antivirus or whatever, there is a good amount of time where the start menu just stays up like its processing what to do. The most notable program when I do this is Steam, taking an average of 30-45 seconds before it even launches and trys to connect to the steam network.

I have noticed this before in much smaller cases with the icons in the bottom right of my task bar too.

Does anyone have any idea on what could be causing this?

A:long load times from start menu

Try a Clean Boot. If this works then add one startup item at a time until the programs hang again. Then you know which is the troublesome program.

I have no idea what he should do to be able to add them back properly. Anyone have any ideas? Or maybe it can't be done?

A:Can't see programs on Start Menu

Chances are that many, if not most, of the programs installed in the Program Files folder will not work after being transferred in this way. None of the registry entries for those programs exist any longer, and all accessory files installed in Windows, Application Data, or system folders are lost.

But for those that will still work, a shortcut for each program must be made from the executable file in the program folder (exe) and then dragged to the Start Menu manually.

Hi, regarding the first point, Win 10's start menu does not express the traditional start menu folder structure usefully or reliably. Strange, isn't it?

Try Classic Shell (free). You can still launch win 10's menu with a key combination, and launch the universal apps from both.

CS. gives you choices- a Win 7 -like start menu, a menu that cascades across the screen, expanding control menu etc. You can even (I have) have a Win 7 Orb as your start button if you get the images.

I'm running XP Pro SP1 on a Dell 450 MHz machine, 576 MB memory, 40 GB System CD. I recently had to reinstall XP, and a lot of the listings in "Start Menu -- All Programs" disappeared. How does one put entries into that list? Also, I no longer have desktop links to My Computer, Network Stuff, C, and My Documents. Easy enough to get around by manually creating shortcuts, but a bit curious.

If you reinstalled the operating system then you need to reinstall all your programs before they will show up under All Programs. Also, get SP2. You're asking for trouble using SP1.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it for you.

If not, then the tutorial below will help you to restore the default Windows 7 shortcuts in the Start Menu. As far as the other shortcuts for installed programs or the ones you added, you will need to manually create new shortcuts in the Start Menu from their exe files.

Hi Bryon,

Try this:

- Right click the Start button and choose Properties
- In the Start Menu tab click Customize
- On the Advanced tab uncheck Scroll Programs in the Start Menu Items list (near the bottom of that list)
- Click OK, Apply, OK

You should now be able to view All Programs in multiple columns.

While on the Advanced tab you might like to make sure 'Highlight newly installed programs' is checked - I find that very useful when trying to find a new program in a long list.

I have searched around for a fix and I know that you can set it to scroll but it's annoying having to wait for it to scroll to the bottom. I could set the resolution higher but the screen gets hard to read. Is there some kind of easier fix for this? (If only you could scroll them with the mousewheel like you can with firefox's bookmark menu)
I also don't want to organize any of the items into folders or anything, they are set up just how I like them.

I had an issue with iTunes where the icon wouldn't show up on the .exe or its shortcuts. I tried to manually change the icon, but it said it couldn't find iTunesIco.exe in the install folder, so I reinstalled. Now when I try to pin it to the start menu, it pins as iTunes (2). I try to change its name through the General tab in properties, and it offers to change the name to iTunes (3) because iTunes is already in use. I don't see it on the start menu, so I'm not sure what the issue could be. I tried reinstalling again, still no success. Any ideas?

EDIT: After browsing the Microsoft help forums, I have discovered a solution. I decided I would keep this for the sake of helping anyone who stumbles upon a similar problem in the future. The solution I found was to navigate to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu and manually delete the shortcut, then pin the program to the start menu. Hope this helps!

I'm confused. If you're dealing with a shortcut, then the common way to change its icon is by checking its properties and clicking on "change icon". I don't understand what a file like iTunesIco.exe has to do with this.

Hi. My Dell Studio 17 shut down yesterday after sitting idle. Now i cannot boot windows. I get this endless loop that ultimately leads me to startup repair which either hangs or errors out. Attempting to start in safe mode takes me to same place.
I know the root of the problem is bsod as I see it flash when attempting to load windows.f
I was able to launch system restore tool from advanced options (f8) but after selecting restore point the cpu seems to hang after over an hour of Initalizing.
I can bring up command prompt by the way.
I don't believe I have any installation disks from time of purchase. Please help! Thank you.

You will need a Windows 7 repair disc or you can use the Advanced Boot Options to get to the System Recovery Options.

Then try the steps in Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery. Note the warning:

The instructions presented withing this tutorial must be followed correctly, or you can damage your Windows 7 installation even further. This tutorial is designed to help recover from a bad registry that is causing the startup repair loop. You should note that there may still be some issues remaining that cannot be fixed by manually restoring the registry.

If the above does not work, proceed with the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot and let us know if you have any questions as you go.

Hi all.

My pc has been hanging randomly and I have to use the power button to shut down/restart.

I've checked in events and there is this error which seems to be causing the problem as the time matches with the hang time.

I posted another topic with another bsod issue in the bsod section, and I was told to run some tests.

A day or so ago, I tried and changed Driver Verifier settings as were instructed in one of the threads here which also mentions that it is an iffy thing to do.

Anyway, I lost windows and could not start again, luckily I had a backup made, and after formatting my HD, loaded it on to it. This error seems to be a driver issue (Screenshot).

Should I go down the Driver Verifier route again ? To be honest I don't want to. If I lose windows again it would be very frustrating.

I've run the following tests so far here

I have no driver issues showing up in Device Manager, so that looks ok.

Please advise. Thank you.

I looked around and found a reference to Mother Board Monitor which at least sounds like it might be the culprit.

Do you have that application installed, or some other temperature / fan speed monitoring sw?

Alex Van Kaam, the author of Mother Board Monitor, stopped development in 2004 citing his frustration getting technical information from mfgrs.

Anyway, if you have Mother Board Monitor installed, remove it. If you have other monitoring sw, post what you have and someone might know more about that sw (MBM source used?)

If you haven't tried a Clean Boot, here's a tutorial you can follow:

Every time (19 out of 20) I have to push Start\All Programs\ program...

Can All Programs appear first and Recent Programs second?
Can Recent programs menu be deleted to put All Programs first?

eg Start\Program...

I have searched everywhere for a solution.

Can anyone help with this please.

A:Start menu with All Programs first and Recent programs second

Not that I know of, but I know that there are ways to make it easier to start the program. My favorite way is by pinning it to the Taskbar or even to the Start Menu. The first 10 items on the Taskbar starting from the left are accessible by pressing Windows Key + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. all the way up to 0. Pressing Windows Key + 0 accesses the 10th item. The rest can be given Shortcut Keys.

Another is by simply opening the Start Menu, typing the name of the program (or even just the first few letters), and then pressing Enter - or using the arrow keys to select it first if necessary.

Another way is to make it so that as soon as your mouse cursor touches All Programs, it's the same as clicking it. I'm talking about a 0ms menu delay for the mouse which is done in the Registry.

I tried a new program to format an external harddisk, swissknife. As a result, I managed to change the file system of de D-drive from FAT32 or NTFS to RAW (?). In addition, in the C-drive some start-up files were changed and I couldnt boot windows. The last problem is solved, the D-drive is permanently damaged but thats not the question here.

After this my "Start Menu > All Programs" only contains a few programs and my previous list is gone. Most links to programs and tools are missing. I read about similar problems in XP which seem to be registry related but I dont know what to change. Attached a screenshot of the program menu that pops up which is pretty empty. Used programs are stored in the start-menu.

Any advise? Many thanks

My parents alerted me to an issue their having with their computer yesterday and after doing a virus scan and basic troubling shooting (short of a system restore which might be my next option) I haven't been able to figure out the problem.

It's a five year old HP Pavillion running Windows XP, 1GB of ram with a intergrated graphics card so the system ram is actually listed as 900 something MB (will edit with correct specs), and an ADM processor (I believe, will edit when I can check the machine later today).

Anway, the issue is, on start up the taskbar and icons do not load right away, this has never happened before but now whenever the computer loads it loads to the desktop but only displays the wallpaper. The icon does not show that its busy or working, the pointer is displayed, I can access the task manager and run programs from there and then after a few minutes the taskbar and icons will load.

A:Delayed load of start menu and desktop icons

do you have the same issue in safe mode?

Not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but here goes.

If I turn on or restart my computer, the desktop icons and startup menu will not load for about 15-30 minutes. I used "Codestuff Starter" and only have 3 programs running at start up, so I doubt it is that. I am really not sure what the problem is, but would like to clear it up as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance,

A:Start Menu and Desktop Icons Take Forever to Load

We've now had three different Windows XP systems come in here for this problem so I wanted to see if anyone else was seeing this. It has happened with both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Center (based off Professional) systems. Two were Dells, one was a custom built one.

After installing a fresh copy of Windows and loading drivers, everything works fine. After doing the first batch of available Windows updates, the system reboots, but you cannot click anything on the Start menu, taskbar, etc. If you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and open the task manager (either automatically as in XP Home, or by clicking Task Manager on the screen that comes up with MCE/Pro), you can then close the task manager, and everything runs appropriately. It doesn't matter how long the system sits there, this continues to happen until you go through that process.

I assumed we had a bad Windows image here at first, but after it started doing it with a whole different version, now I'm skeptical of one of the updates, and wanted to see if anyone was experiencing something similar.

A:Need to load Task Manager before Start menu will open

A few questions

Are they being brought to you with this problem or is it a problem that you are having with installs that you do?

Are you using the same mouse for all of these installs?
When I do installs for customers, I use an old mouse and keyboard on my bench (my KVM caused problems once so I stopped using it for this).

Where are you getting the copy of XP from and what updates are you referring to? Is it when you update to SP3 or something else?

Has anyone seen this problem before. My programs list is empty, but all programs are fine and all programs are listed in the start menu all programs folder but it says it is empty. I have tried using regsvr32 to install shell32.dll again, and used the sfc /scannow command. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Are you looking in the correct folder - or do you suspect that your user profile is corrupted? That'll affect the approach to this issue.

I'm using Win XP Pro and the "regular" Start Menu but need to add more than the three columns of Programs that are being displayed. Other than using the "scroll" feature to have "arrows" is there a way to either add a fourth column or to make the existing three columns narrower to perhaps allow a fourth column? I could use the "Classic" Start Menu but that gives the "arrow" feature again but only one column.
Does anyone know of a way to do this or am I SOL?
Thanks in advance.

I'm having a pretty big problem at the moment, first thing happened is that a lot of programs' [such as skype, Itunes, Word, Excel...etc] icon has changed to window generic icons, the programs could be launched..only the icons disappeared. and I searched for solutions on Google..and tried several solutions but none of them worked and even made it the programs completely disappeared from the start menu and task bar..the folders still exist though but is all empty which means I can't even launch the programs now...what do I do!! HELP!!

the icons looked like this

after a series of trying...the icons were like this

now they're like this

and the programs in start menu are gone

A:programs in the start menu disappeared.

You can rebuild the icon cache - but if the folders in program files are empty, that is more serious.

Do you have restore points from the time before that happened? If yes, we may be able to recover that stuff with a system restore.
